La Fea Más Bella #109-110 12/1/10 Love Scenes, Fully Dressed

Capitulo 109.
Read Julie’s original recap, then come back here to discuss it.

1. Fernando tells Omar he’s taking Lety to his house tonight because he wants to. Omar asks what the heck is happening to him, then teases, “There’s love there.” Fernando, aggravated, responds, “So what if there is?” and hangs up on Omar.

2. Pilar plays the prima donna. Ali hears that Pilar should be paid 500K pesos, exactly what Alicia needs to rescue her car. Ali tells her papi that she deserves the modeling job because she’s been at Conceptos a long time, and she’s Marcia’s best friend. She’s depressed so she’s going shopping – grocery shopping.

3. Pilar describes Pavel, the love of her life, so Irmita tells about hers, Sara wishes for hers, and Pilar asks Lety if she’s ever been hopelessly in love.

4. Pilar says Fernando is exactly like Pavel in everything. Lety counters that Fernando makes all his women suffer a lot, and Sara adds that he’s a terrible mujeriego. Since that doesn’t scare off Pilar, Lety adds that he leads a double life, but she quickly regrets saying it.

5. Very sweet: Fernando calls his mama to ask for a recipe for something easy to make. Mama reminds him that he’s all thumbs in the kitchen.

6. Marta couldn’t get a caterer within budget for the commercial shoot, so Lety asks Julieta to cook for the event. Erasmo thinks she’s in over her head. Mama throws a fit: our daughter needs us!

7. Pilar concludes that since Fernando leads a double life, Pavel must have changed his identity. She tells him that when they’re together he won’t be able to deny his past.

8. Matilde calls Erasmo and tells him she wants to be alone with him. Pop says, “Wrong number.”

9. Fernando takes Lety to the market because he’s going to cook dinner for her. Pilar follows them.

Capitulo 110.
Read Amanda’s original recap, then come back here to discuss it.

1. Fernando and Lety go grocery shopping, and he’s so clueless, he can’t even open the plastic bags. He wants to get some bonsai trees but Lety says they’re broccoli. He wants to make a turkey but Lety says it needs two days to thaw. They act like they’re already married. Alicia is in the same store and almost sees them several times.

2. Lety says she never learned to cook because her dad made her study instead, and Lety thinks he was mistaken because learning to cook takes time, and everyone needs to eat. Fernando adores her clear thinking. Who’d have thought grocery shopping could be such a romantic date?

3. They arrive at his house and Lety is euphoric. She says, “I can’t believe that I’m here. It’s your house, and if you invited me here it’s because you genuinely.. you genuinely..” Fernando finishes, “because I honestly want you to be with me. And to share our time together.” She just wants to stop and drink it all in, and she cries from happiness.

4. Lety imagines Marcia tearing into her. Marc says she’s fought for Fernando against women more beautiful and higher class than herself, and she’s always won. Beating Lety is a slam dunk. Lety explores Fernando’s bedroom, his most intimate space. Fernando surprises her and plays nuzzle/tickle games. She’s troubled by the ghost of Marcia, but Fernando says to forget all about that and enjoy their night together.

5. Mama Julieta picks up Matilde’s call trying to pick up Erasmo. She demands an explanation from him and he tries to hide in the bean bowl. Matilde invades the house and MamaJ walks in on her sucking Pop’s face.

6. Fernando’s nuzzle is interrupted by fears over the red bag, and Lety suggests that they make the fondue. Fernando is all thumbs with cooking, and he admits he’s been in his kitchen all of three times. He’s no good at cutting bread, but he does a magnificent job of distracting Lety while she does it.

Don’t miss Thursday! The first episode is another great one. The second one has good sections in the first 10 minutes, but the rest is a perfect example of why Fea fans cringe at the words "Underwear Commercial."

A few observations:

The first picture on the mantle is during filming of 7 Días, Camil’s best movie IMHO.

In the fantasy at Fernando’s house, the bow on Marcia’s sweater looks like a big “X” as if she is labeled the ex-.

Regarding the fondue, Camil likes to horse around in exaggerated Portuguese. Because Camil’s mother is Brazilian, he’s spoken Portugues since the crib, and just this year he took on dual citizenship.

Unlike the cuartel, Pilar just laughs at Alicia’s insults, etc. Pilar knows Ali is nothing, so her insults have no impact. I’ve always wondered why the cuartel gives any weight to Ali’s insults, since she’s such a loser.

What a contrast, Julieta on a mission vs. the cuartel on a mission. Julieta quickly plans a menu, calculates quantities, makes a shopping list, and heads for the store. The cuartel has a meeting, gives a cheer, assigns titles, and tells Alicia how important they are.

Paula love your comment about the difference between Julietta and cuartel. Add to it she does it silently not screeching at the top of her lungs.

Loved the joking around in Portuguese and the picture. One of the truly great things about LFMB is all the subtle things dropped in about the actors,- songs, pictures, family members.

Fern calling mama for tips in the kitchen! No way! I thought it must be the housekeeper since the idea of Teresita actually going into the kitchen is inconceivable to me.

Wow Pilar is a head case for sure and the hot to trot Matilda chasing after Erasmo had me in stiches. Can not wait to see what the ladylike Julietta will do to her tomorrow.

Interesting that both Fern and Lety are having pangs of conscience and how both of the are ignoring them.

Could someone please translate the word Fern kept calling Lety. It starts with a "P".
I liked how they slipped Brazil and Portuguese into the dialogue. He actually speaks Portuguese very well.
Did anyone else notice how childlike Fern is when he is alone with Lety? It shows this must truly be the first time he has fallen in love.

Paul, I did read your observation about Alicia and Lety being opposites and I remember you saying that this show is all about parallels. Sometimes to be frankly honest the parallels get to be too much. I am beginning to like Lety again since for a while she just seemed so insipid. I think Julietta should be in charge of Conceptos she will get things done. the supermarket scene was way too cute not to mention the kitchen scene. I too was yelling at the TV you have to wash the lettuce first! And that is not the way to hold a knife. I thought the kitchen did not go with the rest of the house actually the outside does not match the inside. I guess there is not much of a budget for set design. At least his suits look expensive and his car sure is!
Jenn
And just to push P&P Elizabeth begins to appreciate and fall in love with Darcy after she goes to his house and sees his intimate space!

Anon, Do you mean when he walked in on Lety in the bedroom and called her "Picarona?" I think it can be used todescribe someone as mischievious or vampish and he was teasing her when he walked in on her in the bedroom like that's what she wanted to do first. I love that scene. It is one of my all time favorite scenes. They are so cute together.

Again thanks Paula for all your work on this site. I really do appriciate it.

Pata's screen shots were sensational today, don't you all agree? Well Pata, one of your favorite Fea moments was in the bedroom, and one of mine was at the front door. You captured it perfectly.

Picarona - I agree w/ Pata. It can mean naughty or devilish, and also a wise guy or a punster. Fernando almost always uses it to tease Lety that she's thinking "below the belt" - e.g. when he was buying wine, and she said that she does have to go home at some point tonight.

This one and tomorrow’s are among my favorite episodes. The store and the kitchen are both very domestic environments, and Fernando and Lety are so content together and so comfortable with each other, that they seem like they’re already married. The teasing has no sharp edges because they both know they’re loved. Do you see why I call this phase “the episodes of bliss”?

deciegirl, you mentioned the guilt. Lety is disturbed by guilt over Marcia, and also by the ramifications for her own future. Fernando’s answer to Lety’s deeply held pain and fear? “Let’s just not think about that.” He gives no weight to things that weigh so heavily on her. Once again, selfish love.

Anon, you mentioned that Fernando is childlike with Lety. At first it seems strange that someone usually so successful with women is so awkward with Lety. It think that it's because his suave was always an act, and as you implied, he doesn’t know how to act with a woman he loves.

As great as those snuggly scenes at the super and at the house were, I actually find it more heartwarmingly intimate when Lety and Fernando team up in the office or out on the street. They're so in tune and really have each others' backs. It's great how they really get each other...like one will start some silly dance and the other will jump right in, or one will start subtly teasing someone in the office and the other will smoothly step into the game.

That's a relationship you can't have with just anyone, and what Marcia has no idea she's missing out on. To her a marriage is just a contract for some appearance of fidelity and social convenience, spiced up with some bedroom action.

Oh no, the fondue is burned. Guess Fernando should have gotten some extra after all.

I noticed a familiar face in this episode...the supermarket cashier who told Alicia her card was denied now appears as Bruno in Camaleones.

I thought once again that Omar is very perceptive of what is going on with Fern when he teases him about there being love. Of course he would actually be horrified to know he is correct. Interesting too how all the time Fern is yelling at him about the cursed letter he is unwittingly waving it around.

If there is ever going to be a future for these two one of them better take some cooking lessons. LOL

This is one of my favorite episodes...love the supermarket scene where Fernando is riding on the side of the cart with Lety's pushing him to avoid running into Ailicia and Pilar and love the little dance Fern and Lety do in unison as they exit the bedroom. This is the first time Fern is actually having silly fun in a relationship which he never seems to have with dour Marcia.

Thanks to Paula, Pata, Julie and Amanda.

aarggghhh!!! would anyone point me to a youtube clip of the supermarket scenes and/or scenes at his place? My dvdr decided to stop recording just as Fer/Lety make it out of Conceptos past the cuartel... what episode number is that anyway?

I can see I missed one of my favorite episodes yesterday. Our house is still torn up with two furnaces being replaced and all kinds of code issues coming up. Enjoyed the comments and remember the tender moments well. Glad you all got a chance to enjoy them again.

Judy, que horror! Are you able to stay warm through the ordeal?

Marta, YouTube user Caro997 is posting themed clips. Go to her page, http://www.youtube.com/user/caro997 , and click on "See all" in the "Uploads" section. That will give you five clips that are specifically in the store and house.

If you want to see the whole episode, and in the LITTLE search box, on the right sidebar just above the thumbnails, search for LFMB 103 . That will give you the five clips that comprise the whole episode.

yes, 'Picarona' is a word they carried over from YSBLF and the already given translations are right on target. sort of flirty naughty...
Paula, THANK YOU SO MUCH, now I can see those, maybe not tonight, too much to do, but tomorrow or in wknd... thanks!
