La Fea Más Bella #133-134 12/17/10 Morning dawns mostly cloudy with a chance of showers.

Capitulo 133.
Read Amanda’s original recap, then come back here to discuss it.

1. Erasmo blames the neighbors for the dog noises, but then he finds Moty. Julieta refuses to get rid of the dog. He admits he’s afraid of dogs because a Chihuahua bit him when he was young.

2. Lety reads Tomás the letter and cries, “How could he not trust me, when I was unconditional with him from the beginning? How could he doubt my loyalty?” She realizes he did it so she’d doctor the balances and return his company.

3. Tom asks, “What are you going to do now?” She doesn’t know; she only wants to go far away and never return to Conceptos. Like the devil on her shoulder, Tom reminds her of Fernando’s errors. He gave her his company and then he distrusted her and treated her disgracefully. Now she owns Conceptos and she can bring Fernando to his knees. Lety considers the temptation but she recognizes that she’s in no condition to make big decisions today. He promises his complete support.

4. In his thinking chair, Fernando ponders how happy Lety makes him.

5. MamaJ urges Lety to tell her what’s wrong. She fears it’s another like the Miguel tragedy. Mama hears Lety crying through the door. She gives Lety Moty which helps, and she prays for ways to stand by Lety even if Lety won’t tell her problems.

6. Lety tells her diary, “I’m the pieces that were once a woman. Today I understand that my life is a cycle and the tragedy repeats, every time more cruel. It’s not worth the pain to go on living, because it will be the same story that has repeated since my birth.” She remembers the cruel treatment from her childhood.

7. Rather than taking revenge as Tom urged her, all she wants is to run away. But she knows she must face it because she’s at fault too, for getting involved with an engaged man. She goes to work in the morning, still not knowing what she’ll do. Alicia mocks her for being an old maid, and Lety says, “I’d rather be single for life than a failure at marriage, a failure at work, and a failure at life.

Capitulo 134.
Read Julie’s original recap, then come back here to discuss it.

1. Lety purges her office of Fernando’s gifts and cards while Carolina watches. Caro is disturbed that Lety has not talked to the man involved about all this. Lety says that to him, she’s nothing. Caro still thinks Lety should give him a chance to explain his side. Lety won’t hear of it, but she doesn’t surrender the trash bag to Juana.

2. She imagines that Fernando says the letter was a joke; it was a test to see if she goes through his papers. He says that he’s incapable of hurting her. She is distant when she snaps out of the fantasy, and Fernando hopes that the cause is nothing more than her worry that he won’t break the engagement.

3. Fernando doesn’t like Omar’s card so he tries to write his own. Again he gets frustrated that it’s so hard for him to be open with his feelings and say what he wants to say to Lety. He gives up and uses Omar’s card. When Fernando checks in on her, she gives him a backhand slap that sends him across the room.

4. Lety ponders Marcia’s wedding dress. She says, “I worried so much for you, but it turns out you’re going to marry him, and I’m the one to suffer.”

5. The repo lawyers come to tow away Alicia’s car while she tries to impress the Robalde exec’s with her class and status. Cute scene, Fernando lets Alicia continue her status game until she tries to order Lety around, when he tells Ali she’s gone too far. He stands to give Lety his chair at the head of the table, and he dismisses Alicia like a child, telling her to be a good girl and bring them refreshments.

6. Celso tries to discreetly tell Alicia the urgent news, but she refuses to lower herself to talk to a doorman privately, so he announces to everyone that her car is being repossessed. The lawyers had tried to work out an arrangement with her, but she was abusive with one and avoided the calls of the other. Saimon tries his best to defend her. As they haul away her car, Alicia falls to her lowest point. So far.

Comments:
WOW! There is a TON of content in today's 2nd cap. But a lot of it, you have to dig a little.

First, a leftover comment from yesterday. Tom saw Lety crying, and before he even knew why, he said, "Take the company from me, but don’t cry." Whereas when Fern broke his promise to break the engagement, he knew Lety would be sad, but he’s not willing to lose the company.

On the old recaps, I've been posting links to the new recaps to make it easier to jump back here. Does anyone actually use those, or can I quit posting those?

The name game with the visiting executive. Lety says Rocío Orozco. Fernando asks, "Rosy Ocampo?" There is the joke because Rosy Ocampo is the producer of LFMB. But there is another joke: Anna Maria Orozco played Betty in the original Colombian.

Lety is working hard to control herself around Fernando until she figures out a course of action. But in the meantime, she is venting her built up anger and hurt on Alicia. She has torn apart Ali twice so far.

Today we saw a role reversal between Lety and Fernando, the first of many. In the past:
A. Fern convinced Lety he was attracted to her.
B. He actually felt a revulsion, and he cringed at her kisses.
C. He avoided being with her unless forced to do so.
D. Lety was convinced he was wild about her.
Now all that flip-flopped; it's Lety who is cringing, and Fernando who is sure she's wild about him.

Paula, I read the posts from 2006. They fill in things that are missed on the 2010 posts. sometimes a scene has been written about in 2006 that Univision must have cut out of the 2010. (The do have a million and a half commercials to stick into 2 hours).
I see how the tables have been turned with Lety and Fern. She disgusted with him, he wanting her. I think now I'm hoping Lety and Tomas come up with a complicated, tangled plan that will make Fern and Omar lose all they have been so desperately trying to keep. I want to see Fern groveling to get Lety back, I want to see Maaaarcia suffer because she now knows who is amante has been and Fern wants Lety not Maaarcia. (She has really gotten on my nerves)

I just hope there aren't a ton of filler episodes (like this one) really, who cares about Alicia's Mercedes?

Diann

Hi Diann, sorry I was unclear. I suspect that most people are reading the 2006 recaps. My 2010 ones are deliberately VERY abbreviated. I do my best to keep them under 20 lines, only hitting the most important points, as a reminder for the current discussion. I meant, does anyone use the links I post at the bottom of the 2006 recaps, the ones that say, "The 2010 discussion for Capitulos ? & ? is at this link"?

And Alicia's Mercedes? I'll say this much: it's not by accident that Ali lost her MB on the first episode of Lety's return to work.

Paula,
Yes, I use the 2010 discussion link at the bottom to get back to the current post. Very easy that way.

Very mysterious comment about Alicia's Mercedes not being an accident it got repo'd on Lety's first day back. I'm scratching my head over that one. Tan mysterioso indeed.....
Caray, we now have to wait until Monday!
Diann

Diann, the MB story was all there today; you just have to dig a little for it. Remember, Lety and Alicia are the ying and the yang, the same and yet opposite. Today was obviously a huge turning point for Lety. But because of the MB repo, it was a huge turning point for Alicia as well, in ways equal and opposite to Lety's. Chew on that a bit. BTW, we also saw the Lety/Alicia ying & yang in the conference room today.

Paula, Thanks for the post. I appriciated the fact that writers did not use the caurtel as a second story line with the first chapter but used Julietta and Erazmo. It seemed more fitting and I enjoyed their interaction rather than my natural impulse to FF>> the cuartel when they appear.

I hate Fridays because we get hardly any comments. Well, today's #134 was noteworthy so I'll post some interesting points, even if everyone is out traveling over the river and through the woods. Diann and Pata, I'm glad you're around.

Once again Lety uses her fantasies as self therapy. In the first one, she tries to solve her problem by denial. But Fern mailing the DVD and giving her Omar’s card shoot down her denial attempt. Next she tries a revenge fantasy with the slap. Neither approach is effective, but at least she’s trying. Remember that after the Miguel tragedy, she hid in her room crying for days, perhaps weeks. This time, she gets up the next morning, washes her face, goes back to the office, and stands. She doesn't fight at first, but even the act of standing is quite a feat.

Fernando gets first hints that something is amiss. In response, he goes out of his way to pay her honor and make it obvious in front of their business associates. He ALWAYS took her for granted, and even Lety’s first small reactions are causing small changes in Fernando.

Diann, I mentioned Ali and Lety in the board room.
1A. Ali takes the president's chair.
1B. Fernando comes in and removes Ali from the chair.
1C. Lety enters, and he gives HER the president's chair.

2A. When Lety leaves to get her calculator, Ali enters to beg.
2B. When Fernando kicks out Ali, he escorts Lety back to the head chair.
The first shall be last and the last shall be first.

I use those links at the bottoms of the old recaps too sometimes. And people who are surfing into Caray for the first time from Google on an old or new recap will appreciate a link that ties the two recaps together.

Paula I am glad you are "obsessed" with LFMB! your insights add to the pleasure of watching such a good story unfold. It also makes me feel less guilty for the two hours I spend watching it when I should be doing work!
Did I get this scene right? there was this scene after Fernando leaves the card on Lety's desk (and yes men are that clueless) and he sees her go into her office and he is waiting impatiently for her reaction. when he can't take it anymore he bursts into her office and asks "did you read it?" It thought this was cute because he was expecting her usual response to what he leaves on her desk. (I loved when she gives him a good punch in the face and he does his keystone cop thing.) I think it was telling in that he is sensing something is wrong but thinks it is because of the engagement. So I would cut him some slack he is slow.
Jenn

Really interesting things as has been pointed out about the role reversal between Fern and Lety even to her wiping off her mouth after he kisses her. It is totally understandable to me but I think she is a bit of a hypocrite and no better than he is for not just telling him she knows about his original deceit. She gives him no chance to explain and just leads him on.

Interesting that Fern who has no fear of emotion is so unable to put his feelings on paper and Omar who is terrified of feelings and emotion can put them on paper so beautifully. It as if he wishes he could feel those things which Fern does.

The cuartel certainly embody the word schadenfreude which means enjoying the misery of others which they certainly did when Ali's car was repossessed. They were in full blown bitchy mode and I just wish they would go away since there only purpose seems to be as filler and to annoy the bejeezus out of the viewers.

Fern the clueless still hasn't really grasped that there is something amiss. He didn't even really notice that Lety and gotten rid of all the tschotskies in the bat cave. Lety took the statue of St. Jude home or said she was going to and I don't remember seeing it again. That is also interesting since St. Jude is the patron saint of hopeless causes and she got it before the letter was found and while she was still on the high of knowing Fern was going to break his engagement.

I'm fascinated by the fact that both Fern and Lety have their consiglieri's. Fern has Omar and lety has Tomas, in both cases loyal and true friends from childhood who alas do not always provide good advice.

In another parallel Alicia is like Marcia. Both of them are living in a dream world. Marcia who thinks she can win back a man she never had and Ali whose entire life is all on the outside, her clothes, her looks and her symbol of security her coche. Ali in particular is a desperately sad figure.

Jenn, about the card, Fern comes into her office and says, "Lista?" Are you ready? It really tugged at my heart (as was the writers' intention) when he almost wrote a card himself, but then he gave up because he can't say what he feels. Imagine if he had pushed himself a little harder, Lety would have gotten a card she knew he wrote himself. Not enough to cancel all the proofs of the letter, but at least it would have given her a tiny bright spot. Honestly telling his feelings - just one of the many lessons our boy will have to learn the hard way.

Alicia’s Mercedes. It was repo’d on Lety's first day of recovery. Remember, Lety and Alicia are equal and opposite. What unites the two events?
* Ali lost her MB, the most important thing in her life. Lety lost DonFernando, ditto.
* Ali's life was centered on love for a thing. Lety's life was centered on love for a person.
* Ali lost her illusion of status. Lety starts the process of losing her illusion of being worthless.
* A car represents independence. Ali has become a prisoner. Lety is starting to break free of prison, becoming a self sufficient adult, setting her course instead of being shoved around.

I have to say that in retrospect I really enjoyed the episodes this week. Yes, I was thoroughly traumatized by Lety's perceived betrayal but it was a good roller coaster ride.

I also like the scenes with Julieta and Erasmo. Julieta seems incredibly well-grounded and it makes me wonder about her background. Do we ever get to find out more about her? It's not like she's a "beauty", but she seems to have a fairly good self-image. Anyway, I think she's a great mom in so many ways.

Lety's fantasy of backhanding Fernando was an amazing departure from her typical fantasies. Even though she shook it off, could it be another symbol of her breaking free?

Finally, I love love love the pink glasses she wore at her quinceanera. Where can I get myself some of those bad girls?

Oops, forgot to thank Paula, recappers and commenters for all their insights. Thank you!

Sylvia, I really think you should get some. You need pink glasses!

Regarding Julieta, on her wedding picture she looks like Audrey Hepburn. Whereas Pop always looked goofy!

The slap fantasy as a symbol of breaking away? Puede ser. I'm glad you liked last week, now that you've had a chance to recover from the shock. The weeks upcoming will be a different kind of roller coaster. We'll have a whole lot of meat to chew on.

And I'm going to tell you one thing that will happen Monday. Call it a spoiler if you want; shame on me! Jaime imitates his father. Watch for it! It is when Yuri introduces him to somebody. I'll also be posting a photo of a really cute kid. No relation to me. But she IS related to Monday's cap.

This is a little off topic but maybe someone can verify this. A friend told me that she read in Variety (the showbiz bible) that STuD has had the highest ratings of any Univision novela in the last 20 years. I can't find the article and while it rates 5 or 6th in the ratings each night I still find it unbelievable that it would beat out LFMB in its original run and the highly popular Alborado. Any one know if this is true?

Go to Google News, http://news.google.com/nwshp, and enter "Soy tu duena." You'll see several articles. The only thing I can figure is that Univision is now carried in more cable systems than it was four years ago, so more Spanish households can tune in. Or maybe that figure the ratings differently. There was a change in calculations a few years ago; I forget the details.

Can't add to the discussion but found all the comments interesting and enjoyed the analysis of both Paula and Decie Girl. I suffered through this Fea period the first time around and am relieved that I've been too busy to watch this time through. However looking forward to future episodes....

Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays everyone if I don't make it back for a while.

Okay, decie girl, I think I've got it.

1. The Variety article is at http://www.variety.com/article/VR1118028960

2. The Hispanic portion grew from 12.5% to 15.8% of the total US population between 2000 and 2009, and even more now. There are many more Hispanics in the US now than there were when Fea ran.

3. With the expansion of Dish and other multi-channel services, I suspect that MANY more households can receive Univision than could in 2006/2007. Also with the growth of the Hispanic market, many more conventional cable outlets are offering Univision. More households can watch Univision.

4. The Nielsen number has two parts, Ratings and Share. Ratings is the percentage of TOTAL TVs in the US. Share is the percentage of TVs IN USE. Young white viewers are leaving network TV in droves. With that trend, even if Uni didn't add a single viewer, their SHARE numbers would increase because whites are leaving the Big 4.

Paula thanks for the link. The article is interesting but is typical media spin because it never mentions the proliferation of households with cable access nor does it mention the numbers of non Spanish speakers who have become addicted to novelas. In any event it is nice to see something other than a dis on the subject. I do wonder if due to the success of evening novelas in prime time and the chase for sponsorship bucks if we will begin to see more movement like that which happened to not so late lamented CS with its move to post midnight. I think that licensing agreements with Televisa may prohibt summarily pulling unsuccessful novelas off the air. As we know they can and do chop the heck out of bad ones but the movement to the post midnight hours may be their answer to the cancellations you get with the other channels.
