La Fea Más Bella #157-158 1/6/11 Recap without a title.

Capitulo 157.
Read Alma’s original recap, then come back here to discuss it.

1. Irmita tells about her three children living in the US. The oldest is bitter against his father, the middle one calls her regularly, and her youngest has a child she’s never met. Irmita’s husband abandoned her and she’s alone. Luigi insists on taking care of Irmita tonight.

2. At Alicia’s, Tom leaves the checkbook outside since he knows he couldn’t resist the temptation. She fusses over his bruises and he tells her that he fought Fernando. She practically paints herself onto him and asks if he can “loan” her the money today, but he admits he doesn’t have the checkbook with him. She frisks him to make sure, then she tells him to leave.

3. Jorge Flores (PG, Psychic Guy) meets Lety on the street. See the transcript. He tells Lety that now that she has repented of revenge, she will move on to the next stage. She will lose everything that has sustained her until now, and she needs to find her inner strength. Her desperation and Fernando’s are one and the same.

4. Fernando tells Omar about the fight and tries to convince him that it was about everything EXCEPT jealousy – the balance isn’t finished, Tom is exploiting Lety, Tom got in his face. He knows he was falling apart, but it felt soooo good when he punched Tom, and he couldn’t stop. Until Lety slapped him. Omar says he’s hit bottom. Fernando agrees. (I don’t.)

5. Fernando takes Lety the card and begs her to believe him and forgive him. She tells him not to worry about it, essentially refusing to forgive him. See the original recap for a transcription of the card. Part of it says, “You have thrown me into a dark and deep tunnel and you won’t tell me how to get out. .. Say that you are mine again. Give me peace.” Lety asks, “Does this means that you’ll publicly admit that the fight was about jealousy? And that you love me?”

Capitulo 158.
Read Julie’s original recap, then come back here to discuss it.

1. Fernando tells Lety that of course he’ll tell everyone that he loves her. AFTER the meeting. Lety is sure it’s just more lies.

2. Irmita’s husband Rafael, who abandoned her 30 years ago, appears at her door. She says, “To me you’re dead. Why did you come back?” He wants to see his children and apologize so he can die in peace. He begs her forgiveness and she tells him to leave.

3. Fern tells Marcia that he fought Tom, so Marcia is mad at Lety. Fern insists it was his fault, and Lety assures Marcia that Fernando apologized in writing. Fern panics – he fears that Lety is upset enough to show Marcia his card. He invents a lie and Marcia leaves. Lety says, “I knew you’d think up a good lie.”

4. Fern asks Lety, “Are you insinuating that I’m a liar?” Lety apologizes for slapping him, but she thought it was the only way to stop the fight (an apology with a “but” isn’t an apology, it’s a justification). He says he deserved it and leaves. She looks at the card and ponders, “Your love for me will be public after the committee meeting. Muy bien.”

5. Marta will be out sick for several days. The cuartel warns Marcia that Lopez may fire Marta and bring in a hot babe. Marcia installs Paula, who worries that he will try to take advantage of her.

6. Lety gives Fern the true balance; the false balance won’t be ready until tonight. He panics, “This is a joke, right? Everyone will find out Conceptos is in financial chaos!” She answers, “I think it’s time for your parents to know the whole truth.” He asks if it’s blackmail and Omar is eager to pay anything to get the doctored balance.

7. Lety tells Caro that she plans to leave Conceptos tomorrow after the meeting without warning. Caro knows Lety needs to get away, and she offers Lety work as her assistant on a job away from DF, but they would leave tomorrow. Lety is boggled.

8. Jasmín thinks Irmita’s work is beneath her, so Luigi fires her, and Jaz blames Lola.

9. In Luigi’s office, Caro finds out that Fern beat up Tom, and Marcia finds out that Lety slapped Fernando in front of everyone. In her defense, Luigi says it was the only way to stop Fern from pulverizing Tom. Marcia barges into Lety’s office, makes sure Fernando isn’t there to defend her, and calls Lety mean, shameless, calculating, abusive, and without class.

Spanish Lesson
Lety and Jorge Flores

L: (She remembers the slap.) After loving him so much, I feel like strangling him.
J: And for that you think you don’t love him?
L: You again? You told me I’d find Omar’s letter.
J: And it showed up.
L: Of course. That letter told the story of a betrayal and it changed my life. I went from heaven to hell in an instant.
J: I knew that. And if we meet again today, it’s because I have to tell you something very important.
(Lety tries to run away.) Mujer! Fleeing me won’t stop what happens.
L: I don’t want to know. I don’t want you to tell me anything. (She knows his last news almost killed her, so she doesn’t want to hear more.) All I need is to disappear from Conceptos and never step foot there again.
J: You wanted to take revenge on the man that hurt you so much. (Ambiguous. Which hurt her, the man or the revenge?) But now you’re repentant. Everthing that you did against him only brought more pain, right? I saw you both surrounded by a web of confusions, lies, deceptions. For that reason you can’t understand each other. You can’t lograr (achieve, accomplish) clarify your situation.
L: To me, everything is clear. He’s pursuing me to save his company.
J: This company is the trap that blocks you for now. It is what unites you, but at the same time it separates you.
L: I’m going to leave it.
J: And you’re going to lose yourself. Everything that has sustained you until now is going to disappear. And there, your struggle (lucha) will begin. Your true struggle to survive. In the painful stage that is coming, only remember one thing. Inside you yourself is the solution to your problems. And you won’t achieve anything until you discover your inner strength. Your desperation and his are one and the same. And if two don’t notice it or don’t accept it or don’t recognize it, you will continue suffering. We will meet again when the storm calms down. One day it will calm down.
L: JF walks away. Lety, to herself. This desperation is the same as Don Fernando’s? Why?

Pat, thank you for the picture. I confess I'm getting much more out of the Tom/Alicia subplot this time around.

It's nice to see our "Club de la fea" growing. I've appreciated the input of those of you who have come on board recently - Diann, Barbara, and Jenn. It's good to hear some fresh angles. We're also hearing a little more from those who post only occasionally - GinCA, Güera, and MartaI. Even La Paloma, who hasn't posted in ages. Did I miss anyone?

Which brings me to..
ROLL CALL!
Who's out there? Just how many seats are filled in this virtual sala de juntos? And are you a Fea newby or a Fea veteran (i.e. did you see Fea in the past)? Are there some lurkers? Head count, please. If nothing else, please post that you're here reading the blog, and whether you're a newby or a veteran. Welcome, all!

I'm a Fea newbie, but am enjoying this. Marcia is a brat, no doubt about it. The way she reamed out Lety today was uncalled for. Fortunately for Lety, Carolina seems to be in her corner and will, most likely, be the means of escape from Fernando. He's looking a shell-shocked but still able to lie his way through any situation. It's going to take Lety leaving and not communicating with him for Fernando to realize the gold he threw away. His temper tantrum yesterday was a sight and he looked so hurt when Lety smacked him upside the head. But, it didn't smack any sense into him since he's still lying to himself, Omar, his parents, Lety, and Marcia. You sorta want to take him by the ears and shake him to make him see reality. The boy/man lives an alternate universe and this one is going to come crashing in on him in one heck of a hurry. And he will not have Lety to help him pick up the pieces. His rock bottom is coming and he'll truly know pain, like Lety's pain, when he hits.

Paula I came into the first run of Fea after Lety found the letter but before the junta. It is interesting to see it again because my impressions of the characters are different from the first time around. Originally i didn't like Omar much but this time around I see his fear of emotion and being hurt and his absolute loyalty to Fern and I like him a lot and will suffer with him.

I also originally liked Lety more than i do this time around because i didn't know how much she had contributed to her own misery. The first time she didn't seem so revenge driven and vindictive as she does now but I really didn't like her much at the end. She is one of those characters who seems doomed to continually repeat her mistakes.

Alicia got on my nerves the first time and I missed things we learn about her later on so now i feel sorry for her. She is one of those sad people who live in a dream world.

The curatel did not age well. I hated them and their bratty kids the first time around and I dislike them even more now although to be fair they were very good with Irmita and certainly less strident than usual.

Tomas is less annoying this time around as is Luigi and Ariel is even more of a snake. Marcia was/is a lost cause but she really does care for Fern.

As for Fern he is just as gorgeous this time around and while he begins as a self absorbed idiot he learns a painful lesson like all novela heroes.

Recently, when I went on and on about how for a couple of weeks about how Fern has the power to stop all the misery by calling off the wedding, I thought I was having a new insight.

Now I read my comment on the #159 recap and realize I'm no smarter now than I was four years ago. :-)

Julie, you're too much!

Sometimes I just want to strangle Fernando with that pretty orange tie! All those impassioned pleas in his card - you don't hear me, you don't care about my pain, you've put me into a dark pit and don't tell me how to escape. But Lety HAS told him. Of course, not about the letter. But at least four times (!!!) she has told him one way or another, that she rejects him because he hasn't broen the engagement and that he won't publicly acknowledge their relationship (A. bartar balance por boda, B. fury at Meson when he claimed that he never said they'd go public, C. after Cuernavaca when she pointed out that he hadn't canceled the engagement, and D. today). Today Lety gave him the answer in flashing neon lights - "will you really tell the world about our relationship?"

"Sure, Baby, right after the meeting, right after I get the balance and don't need your help anymore. Trust me! You don't think I'd lie, do you?" His world is falling apart, he's on the verge of a breakdown, Lety throws him a lifeline, and he refuses it. If he drowns it's his own dumb fault!!!

Julie, did you notice? Omar lists Fern's humiliations, and Fern says the ONLY thing he's got going for him is the tie his Uncle Isaac gave him, his ORANGE tie! I guess he likes it too.

When Fernando doing his rendition of the man in the painting in Omar's office, how did you read it? The painting looked to me like a man in agony in Hell.

Thanks Paula. I started watching this on TV around episode 190 or so. At that time I did not know about CCs and did not know about Caray. Most of the time I didn't have a clue what was going on. I soon discovered it on You-tube and started watching some of the earlier episodes and also found Caray when I tried to watch another TN "Amar sin limits". Never got into that TN but started reading all the earlier LFMB recaps and really enjoyed them.

I got the complete 300 hour disk set after reading a comment from Paula on Tontos and have watched the entire series now. I also saw the orginal BLF when it was on TeleF. a couple of years ago.

This time around I am enjoying it so much more. This board and all of Paula's hard work also adds to that enjoyment. I enjoy the comments and re-reading the orginal recaps. Still don't care for the cuartel and sometimes feel I like them less because I actually understand what they are saying this time around.

I don't remember Fernando commenting on his orange tie, no! It always struck me as odd that he wore two orange ties in a row. I just don't see orange clothing all that often.

I don't remember the thing with the painting, either. I'll look out for it tonight!

This is the novela that started it all for me. I caught LFMB maybe one quarter the way through and watched until the end and have the short DVD. Then I graduated to to Destilando, Pasion, FELS, MEPS. ENDA and a few others that I have watched all the way through. Currently, I am watching LVO (love it) and LFMB. No DVR so I watch LFMB when I can but life interferes. But I always read the recaps, the originals and those by Paula and hit YouTube. Thanks to all for the enjoyable insights.

GinCA

Pata, that is exactly how I feel about the cuartel, too. The ones who do the most talking (PM and Lola) are the ones I like the least. The ones who do the least talking (Sara and Juana) are my favorites - that's probably not a coincidence.

Of course I like Irmita too, because what's not to like? She's not mean-spirited, she finds a way to get along with everyone, and she's the only one who ever suggests that maybe they shouldn't spend so much time gossiping. But this subplot with her ex - zzzzzzzzzzzzzzz.

I watched parts of LFMB when it first aired since it came after Alborada which was my first! But I did not get into it and never figured out what was going and gave up. I guess the aftermath of Colunga was just too much. so this is my first time getting into and loving LFMB. I guess timing is everything. I am not sure why I did not appreciate Camil back then perhaps it was the hair gel which this time around I am willing to overlook for his other endearing qualities. Though I do fantasize during the cuartel scene of washing his hair out and letting it air dry.
I really really like Alicia. I think she is my favorite supporting character. Anyone who spends so much time in tight corsets and painfully high heels deserves some credit. She is also a natural at comedy as much as Camil and Vale. I even love her twang and sometimes catch myself imitating her when talking with friends. Sometimes I think Fern and Omar are just too mean to her and I wish she would sock them. If she were not Marcia's friend and ally I am sure both would have gone after her. She is not different from the other women they drooled over.
I enjoy this blog and reading everyone's comments as much as I enjoy watching if not more the episodes. Thanks all for the double pleasure!!
Jenn

Julie, I do like Sara and Irmita. I think Sara is so funny and one of my favorite episodes was when she decked the IT guy. I also like it when she interacts with Fernando and Omar. The rest of them plus Yasmin are all automatically on my FF> radar.

Hi all. Paula, do you think I jinxed it by commending you on your title yesterday? So sorry!

As you know I am a newbie except for watching the first few weeks when la Fea originally aired.

Jenn, I agree that the actress who plays Alicia is superb at comedic timing. Although sometimes I have to fast forward when she starts whining in her face voice.

I'm loving this, hearing everyone's stories.

Barbara, some people have said that they think Fern has hit bottom. You say he is still going to sink farther until he hits bottom. Interesting.

decie girl, I realized why the cuartel doesn't bother me as much this time. I used to worry that I'd miss something important, so I tried to pay attention to them. Now I know I can ignore them without missing anything.

Pata, so it sounds like parts of Fea will be the third time 'round for you, too. That's why you have so much good input!

Julie, I'll have to see if I can find my picture of Camil in his orange sweater from Tontas. Tan divino! I actually once sent him a fan mail about that orange sweater.

Jenn, have you seen photos of Camil with his curls unrestrained? He's outgrown that look, but they were rampant!

Sylvia, no te preocupe. What jinxed the title for me is a virus on the computer and a trip to my computer guy a half hour from here. Arggg! No brain left for titles.

Ok I can't resist but Paula do you have a pic of his rampant curls?
Jenn

This is my first time for LFMB and I am loving it. I watched Tontas & though I liked Camil I didn't see what all the fuss was about. The chemistry with him Jacki Bracamantes was non existent. This time I am totally hooked on him & on Lety.

I started on Juan Querendon which I saw in Mexico & found again when I got home. I followed up with Querida Enemiga, Tontas, Gancho, Dinero & STuD. You can probably tell that I mostly enjoy the lighthearted comedy TNs. Now that I'm finally down to only Fea I have time to catch the recaps and occasionally comment.

Gotta say that I love the orange tie. We here in Syracuse are very fond of things Orange.

Güera from Syra-cuse

Hello everyone! I'm a dedicated reader from Texas. This is my second viewing of LFB and I'm loving it as much this time as I did several years ago. Kudos and a huge thanks to those of you who faithfully recap.

Here ya' go, Jenn.
Rampant curls, Take 1.

Rampant curls, Take 2.

Thanks you for checking in, Kathleen. I hope we get to hear from you more.

Thanks Paula. I love the curls. I doubt he will ever go bald. You even had one of him in an orange shirt looking at an orange book. I was waiting for your post and now I can go to sleep! I wonder if he has his hair insured? or smile?
Jenn

Paula, I'm here but often miss part of the two hours. I watched the first time around, missing maybe the first month or so? I really enjoy the quicker pace of the double episodes and all the analysis. I may not comment every day, but I am thankful for the fresh insights.
La Paloma

Fern again won’t lety Omar see today’s card. Of course what it says is too personal. But also, maybe it’s a sign that Fern is pushing Omar outside his relationship with Lety. First Omar wrote the cards, later Fern wrote them but Omar reviewed them, and now Fern won’t let Omar see them. Likewise originally Omar directed the relationship, later Fernando stopped letting Omar give him advice, and now he’s hiding most parts of the relationship from Omar.

Speaking of today’s card, is it a foreshadow of the relationship being revealed? Diann pointed out that Fern signed his full name as if it was a legal document. Then Alicia almost grabbed the card from Fern’s hands. Then Lety made a veiled threat to show the card to Marcia.

Usually when Humberto talks to Fern, the first thing he does is ask how the business is doing. This time, arriving at Conceptos, all he does is chide Fern for standing them up last night. But he asks Lety, “How have you maintained the company (mantener, as in maintain a car)?” Everyone exchanges worried looks, but then Humberto says he was just teasing. But he tells Lety that with her, the company is in good hands. And he asks Lety, not Fern, if everything is ready for the meeting.

Paula,
I am here, just late signing in. I read everyday and post most days (you can tell).
I also am new to LFMB (you can tell).
I very much appreciate being able to spring thoughts onto this board and see where they may land. Thanks Paula for noting my card reference (may I have hit on something with the signature and all?)
As far as my appreciation for the TN as a whole, I love, love, love the two protagonists: Jaime Camil and Angelica Vale. The are both genius.
Hate, hate, hate any and all the cuartel. Instant FF for me. At first Simon was fun to watch, but got way too stupid.
Luigi was also a riot, but his scenes are too mixed up with the cuartel.
Luigi with Alicia or Marcia are scenes watched, not FF. Scenes with Alicia, Marcia, or Omar are watched, not FF.
The writing in this novela is also very beautifully romantic. The translation of today's card from Fern, oh my gosh.
The Director should also be applauded for the way he sets up scenes. (The LeNoir with Tom/Lety and Fern spying was brilliant staging) And who would argue over how gorgeous the pool scene at Cuernavaca was filmed, oh my.
At the pinnacle of this all is the amazing chemistry between Jaime and Angelica. Haven't seen anything like it before, and probably never will see it again. (Unless Emilio Larrosa listens to fans and the planets align so he signs Jaime and Angie to his new TN Dos Hogares, set to begin filming this March).
Looking forward to the daily reads, the daily chats, and the daily can't wait for tomorrows.
Diann

I am around, you know I could not miss at least reading comments on LFMB or YSBLF... still busy recapping Eva and translating YSBLF periodically... and watching Llena at times and Eva every night, but finding time to record and watch (with FF button handy) A corazon Abierto and LFMB.
I watched most of LFMB before any YSBLF even though by then i had bought the entire set of YSBLF dvds it was not until it reaired in Telefutura that I watched it. They are like apples and oranges. Same basic storyline but both have their 'magic'.
Regarding whether Fer has hit bottom yet, I agree with Barbara... I dont think he will hit bottom until Lety is gone and he realizes what he lost due to letting his ego take over his priorities.

Everyone's interest in the cards written by Fer makes me decided to translate all the cards Armando writes to Betty at least from the point we know he writes them (after the 1st night together, there is a hyatus during the time she reads the letter that he does not write the cards himself, but all the ones he writes are work of art).
BTW, thanks for the 'curls' pictures, great selection! esp the first one.

it was so funny Omar's reaction to when Fernando told him Lety slapped him... 'you should end your life, have a Hara kere done (sp?), etc etc... '...

Paula...love the "recap without a title" title. I think we should do them all that way. Also so pleased to see this blog line picking up steam in a big way. With my schedule crunch i'm down tojust Llena and maybe watching LVO on Fridays, but will keep checking in from time to time. The discussions here are marvelous.

Paula, I am answering your roll call. I saw a few you-tube videos of LFMB when it was first came out. I started studying spanish and wanted to supplement it with tv. I discovered the series last month, as well as your recaps - which are the reason I understand what is happening. Thank y'all so much for all your time and effort. It makes all the difference. Stephanie
