La Verdad Oculta #102: D'Artagnan joins the three musketeers
Spooked Bertha escapes to the powder room after Adolfo's marriage proposal -- and while there discovers a fine wristwatch left behind on the counter top, reminding her of what it would mean. Carlos visits Yolanda at home, where she anxiously makes him promise before she will explain her ordeal not to endanger himself by harming his father.
Carlos can hardly believe what she recounts of the kidnapping Adolfo masterminded. Back at the restaurant, Bertha returns and agrees to Adolfo's marriage proposal after he explains it will be platonic and essentially to disinherit Carlos and leave everything to her. Her eyes pop when Adolfo slips a heavy diamond rock on her finger.
Back at Yolanda's, she confounds Carlos by excusing killer Édgar as redeemable; and when she explains affectionately the role of the kids, Carlos amazes Yolanda revealing he knows what the infamous letter is about -- that it shows his guilt as accomplice in the maid's murder and Adolfo's cover up.
Juan José brings his bride to a lovely wedding night supper at the Mirador, where they have the entire serenading orchestra to themselves. Up at Yolanda's, Carlos is just exiting as Leonardo enters, and they two agree to meet later. Alone, Yolanda explains to Leonardo about maid Juanita's call and hopes she will call again.
Carlos arrives home to find a condo empty of Bertha; he phones her cell and Alejandra to find her to no avail, so he runs out again. At the Mirador honeymoon suite, Juan José surprises Alejandra with a celebration of red, the color of romance, with a path of thousands of red rose petals and lovers' feast of red fruit.
At Adolfo's, Carlos enters furious in search of Bertha -- where Adolfo nastily throws in his face their impending marriage, Carlos's disinheritance and firing from the Sagittarius all in one big bomb. Adolfo's shouting Carlos is nothing to him -- not his son; while up above anguished Bertha suffers at this ugliness.
Carlos doesn't care about the money or the job, but is not letting Bertha go and begins bellowing for her -- because he loves her! Ber-tha! Ber-tha! Carlos charges up the stairs risking Adolfo shooting him, just when Bertha runs to the railing, sobbing and begging Carlos to leave, because she is indeed going to marry Adolfo.
Stunned Carlos gulps air and writes them both off as he exits, leaving Adolfo looking evilly satisfied. A few moments later at Yolanda's doorstep, distraught Carlos collapses into her arms, weeping like a baby. He explains what happened, wracked with pain, that Adolfo and Bertha have completely destroyed him.
Yolanda consoles him that of course Adolfo is his father and he his son; and when wretched Carlos cries and appeals heavenward asking why his mother had to die, Yolanda is moved to reveal a life changing fact: his mother was actually Márta Saldivar. Sobering Carlos exclaims -- the woman Adolfo murdered!?
She's surprised and stunned to learn David told Carlos that story; and when she frantically denies it, Carlos suddenly loses patience with her part in everything and writes Yolanda off, too -- and exits, shouting he's alone in life! Completely alone!
In abject tears, Yolanda immediately phones and rouses David from a dead sleep to beg him to call Carlos and deny the story was true. Something awful could happen between him and Adolfo! David agrees and rolls out of bed, placing the call to Carlos in his car, where David retracts his story, claiming nobody truly knows who killed Márta.
Next morning, Gabriela's abusing Santiago on the phone for attempting to leak out of meeting together with Mario and her to finally tell the truth. A moment later, down in the office Abelardo phones recalcitrant Santiago concerning a plan David has cooked up.
In the Mirador parking garage, Juan José and Alejandra are just entering their car when they look up warily to see a deadly serious Carlos approaching them. He's tired of Adolfo treating him worse than dirt and come to inform Juan José he's ready to testify in his favor and help clear his name.
When he explains Roberto murdered the maid and his father covered it up to protect Carlos's complicity -- and that now, however, Adolfo's betrayed him and Carlos wishes to repay him in kind, Juan José quickly invites Carlos to follow and talk with him.
Abelardo visits Santiago at home pursuant to David's plan, while at David's hotel office he sets up a conference call supposedly among Gabriela, Santiago and "Mario." At Santiago's he takes the phone and plays both roles, but quickly reverts to himself at Gabriela's excruciatingly probing questions about the truth.
Apparently, Santiago can do on the phone what he can't do in person and breaks down almost immediately to explain in pitiful sobbing that his adored daughter is not really his child! He confesses she's the daughter of Mario Genovés and hangs up, falling in a heap to the sofa and weeping, with Abelardo consoling him.
On the other end, frantic and upset Gabriela learns from David that what Santiago told her was the truth, whereupon she hyperventilates and faints dead away onto the office sofa. Across town on the other side of a holding cell, a federal prosecutor throws Elsa into a panic reading the charges against her.
Despite her agitated denials, the prosecutor drones on in disregard accusing Elsa of being in league with her brother, as distressed Mauricio looks on together with his legal counsel. Out on the street in Adolfo's car, he congratulates Édgar on framing Elsa and orders him to lay low in the warehouse.
Zaida has gone to the beach house; and Adolfo will grant Édgar his fake identity travel papers only if he completes a second half of the job: clearly Édgar is in contact with Susana, who knows too much; and Adolfo wants proof of her death -- real proof, and not some lame cover story this time.
Back in David's office, he frantically rouses Gabriela from her faint, who immediately begins sobbing; and he must explain the secret of Mario's paternity wasn't his own secret to tell, which doesn't satisfy her much. But he can assure her Santiago kept it secret out of love.
In a restaurant, Adolfo -- restored to his usual evil humor -- and Dante gloat over their successful frame-up of Elsa and plan what's next. They're going to run the archeological scheme out of the beach house, where Zaida is already ensconced. They're feeling optimistic, and Dante offers his help in any problems Adolfo might still have.
Gabriela enters the door at Santiago's in tears, and the two of them embrace and settle in for a momentous conversation. Meanwhile back at the jail, Mauricio reveals what Ulises told them, implicating Édgar. But they're not out of the woods, if Ulises is viewed as Elsa's accomplice -- and she could be behind bars for months!
Santiago explains to Gabriela the truth of his and Mario's relationship with Márta, that Mario's a good person who didn't know about the baby and couldn't leave an ill wife. When he points out Gabriela and David are equal heirs and that Mario wanted nothing more than the two of them to marry, Gabriela looks at Santiago sharply.
What does he mean -- wantED?
Labels: verdad
She didn't agree to marry him until Adolfo told her the relationship would be platonic and that his main reason was to stick it to Carlos and disinherit him.
Adolfo made it clear the marriage was for that legal convenience, besides the fact that he just likes her and wants to do her this favor.
Bertha was as destroyed as Carlos was during the cruel dust up. She loves Carlos.
So, all would not be lost for Carlos; but this event brought him to a breaking point at this time, regarding Juan José.
Also, I think Juan José might give him a job at the Mirador, since like before Adolfo will make sure Carlos is blackballed everywhere, as he is in the Campo Real chain.
And I think with the fainting spell, Gabriela is finally pregnant. :-)

Think warm thoughts Jeri! Brrr....
While you are probably right about Bertha protecting Adolfo's fortune, she knew that marrying him would hurt Carlos, who truly loves her. I don't really see her being redeemed; even though she won't be sleeping with Adolfo, Carlos gets shafted financially and emotionally. In spite of her tears, it was so cruel and all for greed.
I'm hoping JJ and Carlos head over to Leo's so JJ can (hopefully) act like an adult and help Elsa. I know it's compelling tv but seeing poor Elsa locked up and Adolfo freely and glibly destroying others lives is frustrating. He needs to have more successive bad days with no hope in sight.
I hope Eddie doesn't kill Susana. I wonder if he can bring some proof of death without harming her?
ITA when Gabi "fainted" my first thought was pregnancy.
Terrific recap for a terrific episode, Jeri, and I had missed Carlos' last lines with Yolanda that "he's alone in life. Completely alone." What sad heartbreaking sentences. I read the recap, watched the links and will watch in half an hour, well prepared. Thanks so much. Stay warm.
Edgar is in a real dilemma. Does he have it in him to kill Susana? And I think Bertha accepted the proposal for money but mainly to save Carlos' inheritance for him though I don't think Carlos will accept her explanation at all. Really, how long before Adolfo croaks? It could be decades.
GinCA
We think the same about Bertha, who really cares for Carlos, that's why I think she's still redeemable. However, she doesn't believe they could live happily without Adolfo's wealth, despite the fact that Carlos's a very good manager. She's greedy and coward.
Yesterday I wanted to give the title "The tale of the Three Muskeeters" to the next episode but it seems I'll have to change it now. :)
And I think with the fainting spell, Gabriela is finally pregnant.
I hope you're right. :)
Now, I have to read the recap.
Diana
"a celebration of red, the color of romance, with a path of thousands of red rose petals and lovers' feast of red fruit" was lovely.
Your ability to crystallize the events so perfectly that we can actually see them in our mind's eye is amazing. "begins bellowing for her... Carlos charges up the stairs...when Bertha runs to the railing, sobbing and begging". You captured the myriad of fiery emotions perfectly.
It's so frustrating not to understand so much of the dialog. I didn't realize Adolfo proposed a platonic marriage. However, what Bertha did was unconscionable. Her love for Carlos did not outweigh her materialistic nature. Karen, I do not believe Bertha is redeemable either. Nor do I think she should be.
GinCA, I don't think Edgar will kill Susana. His one "weakness" seems to be for children and vulnerable women. I think he was able to frame Elsa because he didn't really know her. He and Susana were thrown together at their worst moments, totally down and out.
Aribeth, I hope you and Jeri are right that Gabi's pregnant. I am also looking forward to her and Carlos finding out they are sibs. Carlos will finally have the family he deserves.
Carlos. The most painful cut was feeling Yolanda had betrayed him. I think he could have withstood losing everything else, except for that. I teared up right along with him when he said he was totally alone. Ack.
I have a question. Is there ANY chance Adolfo is not Carlos' father? That would be an amazing plot twist.
So many great comments already. Can't wait for tonight.
Thanks again Jeri! Please bundle up. Spring has to come eventually :)
Diana
Inheritance or not, there is no excuse for treating Carlos as Bertha has. I guess we'll have another unsympathetic couple to add to JJ and Ale in the end.
Aribeth and GinCA, I have been thinking that Mau has been portrayed as the hero in a Victorian English novel. He waits nobly and quietly until the heroine works her way back to him, maybe Ladislaw in Middlemarch? Oh well, kinda sorta like an English novel hero!!!
GinCa I like Bridget Jones' Diary with CF too. I'll never forget the line that goes, "I guess if your name is Darcy, naturally you would stand around in the corner and sulk all night!".
Thanks Jeri, your work is stellar as usual. I guess there will be some sky high heating bills in Chicagoland, won't there?
At least it's sunny. The steam columns are blowing from the northwest, pretty predictably.
Frigid, completely clear arctic air coming straight from Canada.
Ok, in defense of Bertha she didn't have any time or chance to contact Carlos about what Adolfo was doing to him.
Carlos would have never agreed for her to marry Adolfo; but like people often do in novelas, they take one for the beloved.
It would be a final conflict to resolve between them over the next 18 episodes.
Bertha knows how she is and remember Carlos also came back to work for his dad to keep his lifestyle, despite hating him.
Elsa's situation distresses me quite a bit; but then I remember that she has the best galan in the show backing her up, who fell into her lap, and then I think she's pretty darned lucky.
Vivi, I sure hope Santiago will tell Gabriela about "Mario;" but I have a suspicion it's just going to be one of those red-herring cliffhangers where he gives a lame mundane excuse in the next episode and they move on without notice.
Maybe Santiago feels like David, that "Mario" is not his secret to divulge and wants to check with others. Still pretty lame, unless we think Gabriela might go out and do something rash to Adolfo.
GinCA, I love Marco Mendez! Good lord, why don't they have him in more stuff.
I sure hope Edgar doesn't cut somebody's finger or toe off and pass it off as Susana's so he can rescue her.
Oops, sorry, Aribeth! I guess the Dumas analogy was just overwhelming, eh?
It will be so much fun to see Gabriela with a baby. Can you imagine how happy David will be! And Santiago will be a grandfather.
Diana, I can't imagine selfish Adolfo would have taken to raise another man's child by a woman he cared about so little as to murder her. But name a candidate; I'd entertain the idea.
Thanks for all the fabulous comments; it's a great episode.
otherwise be tied up like Don Gregorio's.
If Gabi is pregnant, the pregnancy will usher in a new life with two parents who will love the child....
something new to this novela - with the potental of several other couples to be in the same situation.
Marco Mendes is excellent. He is now in TDA, but to me he appears thinner and younger in TAD.
I think Marco Mendez looks younger in TDA, too, even though LVO was produced four years earlier. He looks like a kid in TDA.
But that's good, because he could have a long life in novelas left.
Diana
I know Mauricio is powerless but he looked very grim during the hearing which hasn't boosted my confidence in the situation.
Diana
Both Faustiago and Yolanda are obsessed with protecting the image that Carlos, Gabi, and Juli have of their parents. Faustiago does not want Gabi to know Marta was a gold-digging loose woman, who went after a married man simply because he had money; that she married Santiago for convenience because she was single and pregnant; and that she was about to dump him for that rich (recently widowed) man when she was killed. In addition to all of that bad stuff about his mom, Yolanda doesn't want Carlos to know she also abandoned him as a small child. Marta was not a good woman (as both Yolanda and Faustiago have said), but they are both trying to hide this from her children. And all his life Yolanda has tried to hide from Carlos what a bad person his father is. Now that the cat is out of the bag about Adolfo's illegal doings, she is desperately trying to protect Carlos from the knowledge that his father is a murderer. And not just any murderer, but the murderer of his mother.
But are Adolfo and Marta really worth the effort? Why shouldn't their children know that they sprung from these very imperfect people, who did very bad things. They're adults. They can handle it.
Things are certainly looking bleak for Elsa. It looks pretty certain that she will serve time in prison.
Adolfo wants Édgar to kill Susana. I wonder will he do it or will her spare her life just as he spared Yolanda's the kids.
Glad that Fausto finally came clean with Gabi about her parentage but with that slip of the tongue will he tell her that Mario is deceased?
Neither have had easy lives already -- especially Carlos. Maybe they just want to spare them any more damage.
Also they are implicated in keeping secrets for decades; it's painful to justify with the proof standing before you, accusing and yelling in your face.
Several times Adolfo has said he can't stand Carlos around, so I think Márta may be accusing him from the grave all the time, and Adolfo blames the only tangible remainder making him so sore.
Also Aribeth, thank you for yesterday's recap.
The only thing that stands out to me from this episode is poor Carlos. I wonder if his therapy sessions will help him get through this.
I also can't understand why Adolfo has so much hate towards Carlos.
Felt so bad for Carlos, betrayed by his father and then by Bertha. I hope he eventually does forgive Yolanda as she seems to be the only one who truly loves him unconditionally.
Bertha is a selfish cow.
Margaret
Bertha didn't have time to give poor Carlos any "avances" because the story required her to give Ado an answer right away. I don't think Carlos would have gone to JJ if he and Bertha had talked about a non-consumatable marriage with Ado. Bertha would have had a hard time convincing him. He stated quite clearly he didn't care about the money, job, etc.
If in the near future, Adolfo suspected for one instant that she was still carrying on with Carlos, he'd have had her offed as well. But there's still a chance that Carlos will inherit through Marta.
About whose son Carlos is, I seem to remember Yolanda telling someone the story of her knowing that Adolfo was the pa and Marta was the ma and Yolanda practially forced Ado to take the child and raise him. However--Yolanda could be wrong. Our Mario could have been the dad, but it would have been BEFORE he got Marta pregnant with Gabi, so it doesn't really work, UNLESS--they are TWINS!!!
I don't see how JJ can help Elsa at all. The only thing the police have right now are the diamonds themselves and a phone call from the States. I'm with you all, who takes the word of an anonymous phone call which precisely indicates where the jewels are hidden--it wasn't the fish who ratted her out.
Ulises had better be careful, too. He can only clear himself if he finds the keys on Edgar. Edgar probably deep-sixed the keys.
I do like the idea of JJ giving Carlos a job. It will take them awhile to learn to trust each other, tho. It would be easy for JJ to think that Carlos might still be capable of a double-cross.
Wait until Ale finds out Bertha is going to marry Adolfo!! Well, he did ask her to keep it a secret. Maybe Bertha will ask Ale to be the go-between.
Did anyone think it odd that Ale answered Carlos' phone call when she and JJ were having a night--just for the two of them? She doesn't like Carlos very much at that.
Loved the skin shows last night.
I don't think Gabi fainted from a pregnancy. I think it was from shock. And what is it with this fainting stuff--is it just in TNs, so they don't have to show the heroine vomiting over the toilet in the mornings? Any of you fainted in the early days of a pregnancy? I must be an anomaly--no fainting, no nausea--but appetite? Whoee, tell me about it. Still, it would be nice for David and Gabi to start a family before JJ and Ale do (Caramelo excepted).
It seems we have a few things to look forward to tonight
--Fausto's slip of the tongue--wantED
--will Edgar go through with making Susana "disappear"
--will Yolanda and Carlos get back together again
--will Gabi figure out that the Mario who was so loving when she first met him is not the same one who now keeps his distance
--will Juanita call back (of course whoever answers at Sagitario will say he doesn't work there anymore) (but JJ doesn't need the letter anymore, right?)
--will Leo figure out the diamonds in Elsa's fishbowl are somehow connected to Adolfo
--will we get to see Elsa out of jail and she and Mauricio together again and happy? Maybe not tonight.
OT: Colin was the pompous dude in Shakespeare in Love and also in A Single Man. He's been my main British eye candy since Pride and Prejudice.
Newbie-O-K
Leonardo deduced the child must be Carlos, and we've never heard anything to the contrary. I can't come up with what kind of drama payoff there would be otherwise anyway.
That's what I based my hunch on about the pregnancy. They just used shock as a red herring; but fainting is probably the #1 sign of pregnancy in novelas.
#2 is probably going off your feed at breakfast.
I'll probably have to change my vote. It's 99% to 1% in Caray in favor of pregnancy. (As I said, I'm not opposed to it and it's about time, although they've been on the outs from time to time).
Newbie-O-K
Newbie, Like you, I did not
associate the fainting with pregnancy, but rather from an incredible shock to the system;
Gabi's whole world was turned upside down with the news that her
father is not her father. This was a once-in-a-lifetime revelation. However, having said that, I expect that she would become pregnant by the end of the novela, and could be pregnant at this time. Ordinarily she would not faint from pregnancy, but this shocking news could have upset her equilibrium if she were indeed pregnant, so that answer kind of goes both ways. In my case - many children, no fainting, no sickness.
Re Elsa, I think this situation is
ridiculous. There are several
defense attorneys in my family.
She has an incompetent lawyer.
There is good reason to believe that she was framed. At the very least, she should be out on bail.
People are released in that manner for much more serious offenses. Mauricio is a respected member of the community. She could go to live with him if necessary.(He'd love that.) Her lawyer needs to aggressively petition the judge at her First Appearance. I don't know whether or not she has a private attorney or a public defender, but I know several outstanding public defenders who would put this guy to shame. Of course, this is all for drama, but it just does not ring as true as the other facets of the story.
I have been trying to find whether any of these have been implemented, but it still appears they have not from what I can find.
The arrests and detentions I've seen in telenovelas all pretty much look like Elsa's. The accused is brought to a holding cell behind bars in an ante-room where a prosecutor reads the charges.
For trials, the judge is given all the pertinent information and makes a decision. The trial in CS looked like a historic version of that, with the judge left to decide alone.
The deal is that the accused remain behind bars until they are proven innocent.
Real treat watching tousled David make that phone call in his skivvies on the stairwell. :D
