Cuando Me Enamoro #7 Thursday 4/28/11 Matilde cries a river and the doc destroys his liver

Capítulo 7

My advice, get ready with your finger on the mute or volume buttons because there is a whole lot of high volume wailing going on tonight.

Last night it looked like Rafa “stretched his leg” (Estirar la pata = to kick the bucket, to die) but we know from the previews that he survives long enough to endure a botched or at least unsuccessful operation. Our doomed Romeo passes out in maid Matilde’s arms prolonging his agonizing death for our viewing pleasure.

Meanwhile brother Jero continues to leave voice mails for Rafa.

The drunk doctor staggers into La Bonita sans medical bag, wrings his hands, and nervously gives orders to everyone on how to prepare for an emergency operation. Get my instruments, prepare the patient, oh dear oh dear. This goes on for a couple of scenes.

Roberta and her friend Selene are parked on a street outside the house. Roberta gripes to Selene about Rafa being with Renata. Why won’t he answer? What’s he doing with Ren? What if he tells her our plans? Why does sis always have to stick her nose in my life?

Fina calls Renata on some buls**t pretext and is relieved to hear that Rafa stood Renata up without contacting her at all.

Regina sobs and gazes at the “various ages” sketches of her daughter. She tells the drawing that she’s going to give Antonio a chance but that she (the kid) will always be the most important thing to her. Wow, this actress is a very convincing crier, well done.

Let the operation commence - we have a montage of split screens, concerned faces, bloodied rags, sweating nervous doctor, his shaking hands, lots of bloody digging around in the wound, and at last the bullet is removed complete with bits of flesh hanging off the forceps. (At least I think that’s what the instrument is. Carlos will correct if necessary.)

Roberta and Selene see Renata’s car approach and they duck down. Come on, like they’re not allowed to sit in front of the house? Or Renata’s not going to recognize Selene’s bright red convertible VW? Oh, maybe she didn’t recognize it because the VW logo is blurred out, that explains it.

Doc says Rafa is a peaceful guy, no enemies, why would anyone want to shoot him? (If he’s so peaceful why did he have a big revolver lying around? Cleaning it maybe.) Matilde says when Rafa regained consciousness he mentioned his girlfriend, La Bonita. Augustin looks pensive.

Renata calls Adriana who is in really cool pajamas and tells her she’s worried about Rafa, something very strange must have happened to him. Then she tells the story about running into Jero and him accusing her of swiping his wallet. Renata recalls the long kiss between strangers and takes a big bite of the forbidden fruit, er, I mean apple.

Jero becomes increasingly worried because Rafa doesn’t answer his phone and he never showed up at their rendezvous.

Hired hand Ezequiel (Alejandro Ruiz) calls Jasmin from La Fea Mas Bella but she says she never heard anything strange during the day, certainly not a gunshot. Oh, her name is Alfonsina in this show; she was also Gardenia in MEPS. Lázaro and Ezequiel ponder the accident, nothing about it makes sense.

Matías shows up and Renata tells him she had a rather odd night and refuses to give any more details. He invites her to play tourist with him tomorrow. I think Matt’s got a bit of a crush on his step-sis.

Rafa awakes in a panic and promptly croaks. Matilde wails and cries and drunk doc tries CPR for about 5 seconds then gives up. Everybody wails loudly and that darn angelic choir that sang for dead Roberto also sings for Rafa.

You’ve got to be kidding. Roberta and Selene are still in the red bug griping about Renata and Rafa. Roberta gets all hyper about all of the what-ifs. She’s driving Selene and me crazy with her ranting and Selene tells her to chill, she knows Rafa loves Roberta.

The Sturm und Drang at Hacienda La Bonita continues with Matilde giving the performance of her life. Doc says he did everything possible, Rafa just lost too much blood. Everybody is all torn up except Augustin whose cogs and sprockets are working overtime. He glares at the doc.

Fina is creeping around dark bedrooms again, muttering she hopes Rob learned her lesson and that everything she (Fina) did was worth it.

Now the padre joins the mourning. Looks like he arrived too late for last rites. He is cara impactada to hear that all indications point to suicide. Matilde’s not buying it, what was his motive? Padre agrees and recites the Trinitarian Formula.

Augustin joins doc who is sleeping it off, er, praying in the Hacienda chapel. Sez he’s just resting his eyes, the excuse I stopped using when I was six. Augustin asks the doc if he remembers what happened, that Rafa just died. I think the Doc’s in deep doo-doo and will do-do whatever Augustin wants in the future.

Renata wakes up, still worried about Rafa. She wonders whom Jero was waiting for, split screen of both Ren and Jero with insomnia, “their” song CME plays. I think Juan Luis Guerra’s voice is the more romantic one, IMHO.

Doc tells Augie that Rafa built the hacienda and vineyards with Jero’s money. Also that Jero is due any time. Augie’s not liking this, says Rafa was just a kid starting out so he could do things his way (a mi modo), meaning he could probably do a bit of cheating. Augie says they’d better get ready because if Jero thinks he’s coming there to do his own sweet will (su santa voluntad) he’s very mistaken. Not sure what he means but it’s definitely a threat or warning of some sort.

Back at the deathbed Doc wants to bury the kid and Matilde says not until the bro gets there. Doc points out they don’t know when the bro will get there, if he arrives tonight or tomorrow then he can decide, otherwise they will proceed. Hard to believe that nobody can figure out how to get in touch with Jero but whatever. Doc says he’ll prepare the body for burial and Augie announces that the doc has decided to dispense with an autopsy. Matilde seems to think an autopsy is a bad thing so she’s cool with letting the preparations begin. Clearly Augi doesn't want an autopsy, not sure why.

Good lord, Roberta, now in her room, is STILL writhing and wailing about Rafa standing her up, she’s working herself up into quite a lather. FF>>

Doc is pissed at Augie for announcing there would be no autopsy. Augie says it’s because the doc was drunk when he operated and he could lose his license. Augustin tells the doc he (doc) drank three bottles of wine, is an alcoholic, and he (Augie) won’t tell anyone that doc operated under the influence if he agrees to dispense with the autopsy. It’s for the doc’s own good. Doc is stricken. Time for another drink, eh doc?

Fina calls a number and gets a busy signal.

The doc makes a call from the house phone and exempts Rafa from an autopsy, he wants to save the family from further anguish. The phone rings, Augie answers and Fina asks for Rafa. She makes up some cock and bull story about interest in Rafa’s product. Augie says sorry, in the first place it has all been sold, in the second place Rafa’s dead, suicide. Oh come on, like someone’s going to give that info over the phone? And I’m not even going to get into the issue of tracking phone calls and that Rafa got numerous calls from a cell phone that resides at the same location as this “innocent inquiry” call. Anyway, it seems Augie wants to bury the kid and rush his deal through before big brother arrives. He unplugs the phone in case the brother tries to call.

Fina does a quiet happy dance that Rafa’s dead. She has a gleeful satanic grin that scared the hell out of me.

Matilde finds the crumpled “Dear Rafael” letter. She runs downstairs shouting that she killed him! It was La Bonita that caused the boss to take his own life. The doc, desperate to divert any blame away from himself, makes a big show of reading the letter and exclaiming profusely how this caused Rafa to kill himself. Lazaro kind of rolls his eyes and says “Kill yourself over a woman?” I’m liking this Lazaro a lot, he seems to be the only one with any sense. Doc gives the letter to Matilde and tells her to guard it carefully. She must give it to the brother, he has a right to know that This Woman caused Rafa’s death!

Later, the doc is outside ruefully recalling the bloody operation in gory detail. He clutches his little flask between his fists and takes a swig. Man, the doctors sure get a bum rap in these shows.

The next morning Rafa’s in his coffin and Matilde is still crying a river over her boss. Lazaro gives her a look like “Yo, Waterworks, shut the hell up already”. The entire hacienda staff is there, the women are crying and the men are stoic.

Alfonsina says something about the boss being such a great guy, he gave her a job even though she was a woman and didn’t have an engineering degree. Some other woman points out Alfonsina knows more about vineyards than anyone and el jefe knew the value in that. I only mention this conversation because it might be important somewhere down the line.

They’re ready for the burial but Matilde makes another big scene about not wanting to let go.

Roberta runs into Renata on the Stairway of Doom where Renata tells her that she never saw Rafa last night because he stood her up and wouldn’t answer his cell. This bit of info perks Rob up but she still Hates Not Knowing.

Jero is still trying to reach Rafa but the hacienda phone is unplugged. He calls the hotel lobby but nope, no messages from his brother for him. He books a flight to Tijuana.

The doc tells Augustin that it’s obvious Rafa killed himself over a woman. Augie thinks it’s odd because Rafa seemed like such a balanced person with a great future. Short PSA about all Rafa’s hard work to create his organic pesticide-free vineyard. Augie tells the doc he’s never loved anyone enough to take his own life, life is so precious he wouldn’t give it to anyone. Something tells me something’s gonna happen down the line to make Augie change his tune.

Augie tells Doc he’s not going to the burial, he can’t stand all that stupid crying. Anyway, he has an appointment with the notary, he’s planning to proceed immediately with the harvest, blah blah blah before the brother arrives to mess up Augie’s program. Then he makes a dig that neither the bonita nor the doc are responsible for Rafa’s death, “Or are you?” he pointedly asks the doc. Doc freaks and says don’t discuss this, I’m not responsible, is that clear Augustin? Is that clear? Augie gives doc his evil smile. (Note: I have a hard time understanding Augustin and my closed caps were terrible so if I missed something important please tell me and I’ll add to/correct the recap. Thanks.)

Oh HELLO! My reward for recapping just arrived. Matias is ready for a ride and he’s all decked out in tight, white, bun-hugging jodhpurs, white polo shirt and riding boots. I know, I know, it sounds like a dorky getup but honestly on this guy it’s positively smashing. Rewind. Pause. He wants to ride with Renata and he gets to ride a horse named Borracho (drunkard) which I find amusing.

Jero fishes Renata’s bracelet out of his pocket and recalls the stolen kiss.

Montage scenes of Renata and Mat playing tourist in the DF, lots of sibling-on-the-verge-of-not hugging and kissing. Looks like a fun day.

Cut to Rafa’s funeral. Lazaro cogitates, Doc looks guilty, Matilde’s, you guessed it, crying.

Roberta cries and keeps trying to reach Rafa via cell phone. She doesn’t understand what’s going on with him.

Over at Hacienda La Bonita they are cleaning up and notice the house phone is unplugged.

Jero is at the airport recalling the day his mami died. Little Rafa is weeping uncontrollably and so loudly that I can’t hear what mami’s last wish is but I imagine she’s tasking Jero with taking care of his little bro. She “stretches the leg” (dies) and grownup Jero thought bubbles that he promised mom, Rafa just has to be OK. He checks his watch nervously.

A local taxi drops Jero off at La Bonita. Jero hears the mournful death knell and spies the black funereal bow tied to the entrance gate. Uh oh, big brother’s got a bad feeling. He spots Matilde dressed in black. She doesn’t know how to tell him but...but...the boss Rafael, Jero’s brother, is dead!

Mañana: Renata and Mat kiss? Renata thinks of Jero. Matilda tells Jero that it’s the fault of A Woman. Jero clutches the letter and vows to find out about This Woman.

Vocab:
a mi modo = my way
su santa voluntad = his own thing, his own sweet will (lit. his sainted will)
estirar la pata = to kick the bucket (lit. to stretch the leg)

Got up early to catch the wedding, I admit. Had to see the dress (stunning). Fun to be able to also relax and read this with my coffee. Working at home today so no rushing into the office.

I so agree Sylvia, I just could not take the butchering Doc and Mathilde incessant wailing last night, so I was flipping to other channels during a lot of this episode. Got the important stuff, Matias in all his hotness and the end.

So tonight the real games begin. We'll get Jers/JS doing his best outrage scene. Should be get - and let's hope no more weeping Mathilde.

Sylvia, great recap. Better than the episode. The whole vineyard story has me a bit confused with Rafa the Dr. and the Augistien character. You really cleared up a lot of things for me last night.

Good morning all. Pata, I'm confused about the vineyard story too. It's slowly starting to make sense but I have a hard time understanding Augustin and my closed caps are crap. Maybe Marta will help clarify some things for us.

Daisy, weeping Matilde, kind of like waltzing Mathilda, I like it. But I sure was tired of her wailing, ay Dios mio. Between her and Roberta I thought my head would explode.

In the previews it looked like Jero was looking at a photo of Roberta with Renata in the background but I couldn't really tell who exactly had the picture. I guess we'll find out tonight.

i am walking into a meeting as I type but I had to say ROFLOL on that recap title, Sylvia!! that was perfect!!

Sylvia tremendous job with such an awful episode. I too could not sit still. But me with my warped humor could not stop thinking of the Carl Burnett skits, where the think the person is dead and then "dead person" kept saying one last thing.

I hope this TN is now going to move forward, although now with the dear brother arriving, there should be more lagrimas tonight.

What a terrific recap! Thanks so much, Sylvia. I especially loved the title, the abundant snark, and the Spanish. As Pata said, your recap was much better than the episode. Not even Matías in his gorgeousness was worth having to slog through the endless weeping. Perhaps the writers were as drunk as the doctor and thus couldn't think of anything else to say. An alternative title for the episode: "FF>>."

Sylvia, another of your stellar recaps. Thanks muchissimo.

That Matilde can sure cry, eh? Think I'll hire her as a 'paid professional mourner' for my funeral.

Nellie, you are so right about the skits where the dead person keeps popping up.

This tn doesn't make much sense yet but at least I'm starting to recognize the players. That helps.

Sylvia, I loved where you said "Hired hand Ezequiel (Alejandro Ruiz) calls Jasmin from La Fea Mas Bella..." Excellent...

Great title & great recap. So true about weeping Mathilde! What's up with that?

This show moved along so fast at the beginning in order to bring us to this point. It's left my head spinning sometimes. I also have not figured out what's going on with the vineyard & the deal with Augie . I suppose that now that the characters are in place the pace will slow down. Let the vengeance begin.

Sylvia, great recap and as everyone has said, much better than the episode.

Carlos, I see one of your favorite telenovias is in this TN. Maybe she will make up for the really bad doctor.

Agustin looks interesting - he may be the one watch.

Please no more La Llorona!

I could have done without the Tour de Mexico.

Rosemary

here is what Augie was planning...

push and push until he is able to
buy the crops (exclusive buyer rights to the first and all crops from Rafa's hacienda for next 3 yrs) from Rafael (which are grapes grown without fertilizer so it is the 'gourmet' category if you will) for three years... (at whatever price they agree to today ... who knows what they would be worth two years from now depending on how the wine sells the first year... so Augie is getting a 'fixed price' deal, using the fact that Rafa is a newbie in the business side of it)
He assumed he would only have to deal with Rafa and be able to manipulate him to his desire...

what he is getting.
Rafa is dead now...
Jero is a well respected businessman and is the one that financed (put up the money for) the 'revamping of the hacienda that belonged to their family)...
Jero is on his way there (arrived at end of last night's ep) and is not a happy camper...

Augie has played his cards best he can...
he has blackmailed the dr into believing if he tells all that the dr operated on Rafa while drunk, he will lose his licence... so he has the Dr intimidated to be on his side... with the bypassing of the autopsy he is the only one that can destroy Dr...

Nellie, that's too funny! I remember those Carole Burnett skits. Yes you do have a warped sense of humor (which I like) but really, Rafa kind of acted like that the way he kept hanging on and then popped up at the end.

Juanita, I love your alternate title. I wish I would have thought of it but I think I will put it in my notes for the future just in case. I will give you full kudos for it if I use it.

Emilia, I admire your pragmatism. Weeping Matilde would make an A-1 professional mourner. I sure know why she got the part.

Güera, I think you're right about the vengeance. Judging by Jero's angry face and clenched fists it should all start tonight.

Lazaro is correctly wondering why Rafa would kill himself if he had achieved everything he had set himself to get... he had sold his crops to Augie... he had lined up his Bonita to get married the following Sunday and had the revamped hacienda to give her the lifestyle he had promised her... if he had killed himself by accident by firing the gun while cleaning it, he would have shot himself on the arm or leg but would never be pointing the gun directly at his stomack...

Rosemary, I kind of liked the Tour of Mexico but for those of us who didn't care for it at least it was blessedly short. My favorite snippet was when Renata was carrying Matias around on her back. La Llorona, that's another good idea to include in a title, I'll add it to the list.

Marta, bless you, I knew you would be able to clear up those details for us. With Augustin's accent I couldn't tell if was saying tres años or quince años (which didn't really make sense). So yeah, your explanation is super helpful. So far Augustin hasn't done anything illegal, he just wanted to use Rafael's ingenuity to his advantage. Slick big brother from Europe won't be so easy to manipulate.

the forceps.... looked like a giant tweezer to me... lol but i am sure there is an official medical name for it

Matilde seems to think an autopsy is a bad thing...
yes she said she was so thankful to the doc for not letting anyone else (errr... lets guess a non-drunk forensics doc) 'mess' with her patron's body anymore...

she’s working herself up into quite a lather.
and
Lazaro gives her a look like “Yo, Waterworks, shut the hell up already”. ROFLOL!! love it!!

Jero is still trying to reach Rafa but the hacienda phone is unplugged. He calls the hotel lobby but nope, no messages from his brother for him. he tells the man on the other side to prepare his final hotel bill/check, he is leaving today. He starts an email to Rafa.
...actually he was booking a flight to tijuana (hacienda area?) online, he mentioned 'tijuana' as he typed...

I do believe that Matilde or somebody made a comment about being thankful that el patron's body would not be violated by an autopsy.

Lazaro is clearly the guy with the smarts in the group. I hope he doesn't tip his hand to Augustin or he could be in danger.

[I tried to post this yesterday, but I was having all sorts of trouble posting comments. Today I'm going to try to post as Anonymous after logging out from my Google account.]

Absolutely loved, loved, LOVED the scenes where Renata gives Jero the what for! You go girl. Silvia Navarro is awesome. I'm really enjoying this actress whom I have never seen before. And I'm enjoying the character of Renata also. She has been really cheery and peppy up until now, but it's great to see her claws come out! I was kind of worried that she might be a long-suffering kind of helpless character, but no - they're going to let her have a backbone. She'll need it as the wrong victim of Jero's revenge plot.

Jero may be a bit of a suspicious jerk, but I'm totally enjoying his interactions with Renata.

This TN is reeling me in!

Audrey

Wow, it worked! I was so frustrated yesterday! I wanted to comment but couldn't.

The conflict Rafa had on his head before he got mad when Roberta said Gonzalo was not approving the marriage... was that since he had worked at Gonzalo's company he was planning to give Gonzalo first priority in the one who would buy his crops... he really wanted to win points with Gonzalo his dad in law... and he was questioning why Augie was willing to offer 25% over just like that... he got no answer from Augie, just more pressure to decide.
but with Roberta's lie about Gonzalo attitude to the wedding, he ends up giving in to sell to Augie, who had offered him 25% over any other offer... but the offers never really came in so Augie bought it at whatever price he was offering in the papers Rafa signed, and who knows what that price was.

too funny, Sylvia for you to say that the doctor destroyed his liver... because that is exactly the same main organ I was afraid for when I saw where the 'hole' was and how the doctor was digging in there while drunk, nervous and looking elsewhere
a shot through the river is very critical since it makes you bleed very fast and furious... vs a shot in the shoulder or hip area as long as it does not hit any main arteries... liver is a MAJOR target and yes, they would lose blood fast...
as a matter of fact that is one of the fav spots for people in TNs to get shot and die... you recover from a shot on the shoulder. we saw He-man walk away after getting shot in the back of the shoulder but someone who gets shot in that area of the belly is doomed usually.

Thanks Marta. I fixed the recap. "He books a flight to Tijuana."

I remember from an earlier episode that Rafael's ranch La Bonita is located in the Guadalupe Valley area of Baja. Some of Mexico's best wines come out of this area.

Audrey, how awful that you were having problems! I'm glad you figured out a way to get around blogger's finicky ways. I really like Silvia Navarro and she is one of the main reasons why I decided to recap this one. I saw her in Manana es Para Siempre and liked her very much.

Marta, thanks for explaining the details of Rafa's decision. Sheesh, no wonder we are confused, it complicated!

Great job, Sylvia. I thought the show was a hoot and your recap is as well. I loved watching as Rafa kept popping back up... Nellie's observation is apt. I remember those Carol Burnett skits. I was also reminded of the scene from Monty Python and the Holy Grail.

Rosemary, seeing Gardenia (MEPS) again more than makes up for Aldo (LFMB) and a drunken surgeon.

Those were surgical forceps (Heaney) that the Dr. was poking around through the bullet hole with. I wasn't paying real close attention but if he used something that looked like long tweezers, those are called pickups. There were a few flaws in his technique.

Carlos

Thanks for such an enjoyable recap, Sylvia!

Ay, Matilde, BASTA YA with the crying already! La Llorona is a fanastic nickname for her. “Yo, Waterworks, shut the hell up already” Lol. Lazaro had the right idea!

Dr. Borracho is not only terrible at surgeries he is also pathetic at giving CPR. Not did he give up after two seconds, he tried to do it with Rafa on the bed. You can't give that kind of CPR on a soft surface. I took a CPR class in middle school and even *I* know that! ;)

Amy

Audrey, I wonder whether the problems you were having with your Google account are similar to the ones I have with mine. My problem is that I have two Gmail accounts. One is apparently tied in some way to my using Blogger. If the last time I used Gmail I logged in to the Gmail account not related to Blogger, I often have problems posting messages on CarayCaray. I get done writing the message, try to post it, and am told something like "sorry, nyah nyah nyag" (well, those aren't the exact words, but...). I've learned to make sure that I copy my message to the clipboard before trying to post it. If I get a rejection, I get out of CarayCaray, log into the Blogger-linked Gmail, and then go back to CarayCaray, paste my message from the clipboard, and all is well. A bit of a hassle, but I guess I prefer it to being Anonymous, even though, as you say, I could sign my name at the end of the message.

BTW, I too am enjoying Silvia Navarro's performance as Renata. I first saw her in Mañana es para siempre and thought she stole the show. She's the main reason I decided to give Cuando Me Enamoro a try.

@Juanita: I think a lot of people were having problems posting comments in various blogs on this site yesterday. Whenever I looked up my error codes, many other people were reporting the exact same thing. So I don't know how many of our regular commenters are having problems which is why I posted my final workaround. Wish I had tried it yesterday!!

Enjoyed the recap Cap'n Sylvia. I saw the beginning, muted the show with all the crying, and then I fell asleep and missed the later good stuff - LOL!

Audrey

Really liked your recap today, thank you.

As I wasn't following the Spanish cc's that well, the impression I got is there may be a connection between Fina and Augustine. I thought his conversation with Fina sounded coded. It may be that Fina was already working to undermine the vinyard. Every action by Augustine would seem to give Fina cover.

Going to get real interesting.

A in Baraboo

I too could not get through yesterday. Everytime I clicked the button to post I was sent to a google site inviting me to open my own blog. So here's my yesterday's post.

Enjoyed the recap Marta & thanks for the posting Jardinera.

There seemed to be some bizarre cutting between the scenes -- an endlessly dying Rafa -- a lunch that goes on till dark -- the budding romance between Whining Regina & nebbish Antonio.

I enjoyed the banter between Jero & Renata. But then I liked Aldo too -- and old B&W movies about spitfire heroines and sparring lotharios. And I think the are doing it better than Camil & Bracamontes did in Tontas.

And then there's Fina & Roberta already setting Renata up for the fall. "Oh no, Robeta & I hardly know Rafa but he's a good friend of Renata"

I've been trying to post all day -- but Google keeps interrupting my attempts. Anyone else having this problem?

Güera

You can't give that kind of CPR on a soft surface.
yes, you have to drag them to the floor or another flat hard surface to give CPR.
and you'r right... you are supposed to try CPR for several minutes before quitting (legally until you physically can no longer do it)

Guera, what made me laugh when I heard Fina say...
Oh no, Robeta & I hardly know Rafa but he's a good friend of my daughter'
is that it is the truth but noone there knows that her only daughter is Roberta so yes everyone else will guess from her statement that she means Renata

And about Sylvia Navarro... just her scenes with Hero at the restaurant show me very much potential in the way she is supposed to portray a Renata with backbone... The fact that she has a backbone is the main attractive point of this story IMO. And where Kate del Castillo excelled in.

Cap'n: "I think the Doc’s in deep doo-doo and will do-do whatever Augustin wants in the future." LOL! Your humor is always much appreciated.
==============
Martaivett: Thanks for all the clarification and for the harvest to-market backgrounder. Honestly, my eyes started to glaze over when those things came up. As for that shaky bullet extraction and the tissue attached to the pickups/forceps and/or bullet --ugh! It does make you wonder if El Borracho de Medico didn't make a worse shredded mess of poor Rafa's liver than the darned bullet did!!
================
Carlos: I had to chuckle when I saw your favorite pair of DD's appear.

Thanks, Sylvia, thoroughly enjoyable cap! Your gushing over Matias is too funny! I feel ya, though I haven't identified any hunk material yet. Hey. Is there any chance the wicked Fina knows Augustin? It was so strange him sharing so much information with a stranger over the phone - maybe it's jusat a coincidence but if they're not in league now they may be in the future. Course, it doesn't serve him for Rafa to have died. Anybody know, doesn't this death totally nullify the sweet exclusive deal for Rafa's harvests? I want Jero to expend some of his rage on this Augustin who's obviously trying to take over the vinyards but looks like it will be misdirected to Renata.

AND, I want Renata's right hand to catch Matias' eye -- this step sibling thing is not sexy!

Khalilah

Carlos, you're too funny for sharing that Monty Python clip. I suppose comparing Rafa's death to Carole Burnett is a walk in the part compared to satirizing the black plague. Thanks for the update on the surgical instrument. Your understated review of the doc's technique gave me quite a chuckle.

Amy, I thought the same thing when the doc was attempting CPR and poor Rafa was bouncing around on the bed with Matilde bouncing next to him.

A in Baraboo, your version of Fina being in cahoots with Augustin is very interesting and would explain the weird conversation. If Fina is not yet in league with Augustin I doubt we'll have to wait long for them to align.

Jardinera, I probably would have forwarded through all that vineyard talk but since I was recapping the episode I thought I should at least make a half-hearted attempt to understand what was going on. Alas, I missed a lot but thankfully commenters like Marta help us put the pieces together.

I have been having trouble with Blogger too. I usually copy my comment before hitting "publish" because about a third of the time I get the nasty nyah nyah message.

Augie doesn't really have any good reason to hide the fact that he already bought the crops from Rafael. And telling someone who says they are interested in buying the crop over phone that they are too late and that Rafa is dead will definitely keep them away from the hacienda... which is what he wants... the less witnesses to the chaos the better for him.
None of it will be a secret for long and what is NOT convenient is to have folks from outside coming to bug about stuff that is done deal.

Hi Khalilah, so that's two of you so far who think Augustin and Fina might already be connected.

I might be obsessing over nothing but I thought the script made a big deal out of Augie pooh-poohing love. Made me think he's in for an attitude adjustment.

Good question about the contract being nullified. I wondered about that myself and figured that if Augie was in a rush to push things through then Rafa's death might affect their contract. I know nothing about such things but I think we're going to find out real soon.

and for those not familiar with the version from 98 there is A LOT different here... no vineyards in 98. it was an agave plantation. Veronica (Renata) did not meet Deme (Hero) first, she saw Juan (Matias) return first and THEN after she and Juan had started to hang out together and became interested in each other, THEN Deme showed up at the 'party' to welcome Juan home. So none of the accidental meetings etc.
And the whole part of the past with the wife, the lover, the baby stealing, etc is all new in this one. In the previous version Ricardo (Rafa) did shoot himself when he received the letter from Virginia (Roberta) and she DID write the letter herself instead of her 'mom' writing for her. Actually Virginia was an orphan as well as Veronica (well... not quite) in the original. I wonder if Augie will take the place of the 'Andre' character in the original. But Andre was not evil and had no interest in the hacienda itself or its crops.

OOoops. I want Renata's right hand GAL to catch Matias' eye - is what I meant to say!

Khalilah

OK, I win!! I hit 'publish' and my ENTIRE computer shut down. Oh joy!!

Carlos, just wanted to thank you for the Python sketch - it's been a long time since I've seen it.

Oh my, really? Emilia, you're such a topper!

Fantastic recap Silvia. I have a feeling Rafa's bod will be exhumed somewhere down the line and a real autopsy done. Dunno, but I'm thinking that.

Navarro is fabulous. She can do it all--perky, preppy, weepy, serious, and omigod, look out when and if she (I'm pretty sure she will) finds out her mom killed Rafa. Remember the scene in MEPS when Eduardo had to separate her and Barbara Greco because Fernanda would have killed Greco? She can do rage really well too.
