La Fea Más Bella #291-292 4/11/11 Weddings, Flowers, Hugs, Photos, Te amo’s. Just not from the same people.

Capitulo 291.
Read k-Fuego’s original recap, then come back here to discuss it.

1. Irma, Juana and Marta alert Fernando that Lety’s free. Irma knows Lety can only be happy by Fern’s side. Sara and Lola warn Aldo that Lety canceled the wedding. He should hurry so Fern doesn’t swoop in.

2. Aldo says Lety loves him and she’s just throwing a tantrum right now, so he’ll wait until she calms down. “I know she loves me. If she decides to be with Fern, that means she doesn’t really love me. And there is nothing one can do against that.” (How’s that for double-speak?) Then I think he says, “Everything that one loves, he loves, and I love Lety.” (Geesh! Even little candy hearts are more profound than that!)

3. Fernando almost seizes the opportunity but decides that declaring his intentions ten minutes after Lety broke her engagement might be rushing things a tad. Aldo painfully ponders, “My love for you is immense, as big as the ocean.”

4. MamaJ asks Fern if an engaged man can have a another woman as a friend? That’s what Aldo said about the picture. Fern says it would normally indicate infidelity, but Aldo isn’t normal. It pains him to admit Lety loves Aldo, and they should help them reconcile. Mama is very moved by his sacrifice.

5. MamaJ and Fern find Aldo and Carmina embracing. Before they can say anything, Aldo says, “Nothing I say can convince you.” Carmina tries to explain, but Aldo tells her it’s pointless. Carmina says she told Aldo to explain PV to Lety, but he didn’t want to. Aldo tells MamaJ that if he had any doubts about his love for Lety, he’d scram. He’s ready to dedicate his whole life to making her happy.

6. Lola tells the cuartel Efren hasn’t made any court-ordered payments, and the court will take action.

7. Fern brings Lety the flowers someone sent. Lety runs to thank Aldo, but he says he didn’t send them. The card reads, “The love that distrusts is not love, and I need yours to continue living. –Aldo.” Aldo isn’t happy. But he says Fern did it so they’d be happy.

8. Jaimito says he doesn’t want to live with his birth father. He wants to stay with Saimon.

9. Fern tells Lety what Carmina said. He has resigned himself to his loss. He sent the flowers because all he wants is for Lety to be happy. And she loves Aldo, right?

10. Lety hears Aldo tell Girardo he can’t recover his restaurant. He doesn’t have the cash because they can’t complete the TV show. Lety says Fern convinced her that Aldo isn’t involved with Carmina. Aldo does not look happy at this turn of events.

Capitulo 292.
Read Alma’s original recap, then come back here to discuss it.

1. Rather than being happy that the love of his life has come back, Aldo scolds Lety for not believing him. He says his priority is her happiness. But he’s pensive when she hugs him.

2. Jax calls Fern to demand that Aurora return. Just then, Aurora calls him to say she’s ready to return. Fern wonders why, just as Aldo walks in and demands the remaining $1.5M of the debt. Fern puts it together. He says they can restart filming today.

3. Several days later, Saimon and Paula get married. Fern tells Omar he’s an idiot for moping about Caro, when she’s never mentioned another man. He needs to confront her rather than spend his life not knowing.

4. Lety tells Caro the TV show is finished, no one discovered Aurora, and she’ll never again appear (8 times).

5. Ali says loudly that their wedding wasn’t low class like this one. Paula screeches that it’s better to have a basic wedding than to be driven to bankruptcy by trying to show off (presumir). Efren and Jaz arrive, and Lola screeches at him for letting his children starve.

6. Fern hands Lety his jacket while he carries sodas. The smell reminds her of when she fell in love. His wallet falls out. She finds the Auroralety picture and knows that he knows. As she tells Tom, Fern walks in and asks what’s up. See the transcript. I LOVE this scene! What a man! He tells her that he protected her secret.

7. She’s almost crying, so he tries seven ways to Sunday to cheer her up. They laugh about Lety and Aurora signing the contract, and when they almost caught her when they lost the keys. She gets sad again because she was so mean to Omar, so Fern changes the subject again. He speculates what would happen if Omar knew Aurora was Lety, and he makes her laugh again. Aldo arrives and jealously drags her away.

8. Fern and Lety lock Caro and Omar in the room. Caro charges that he’s a mujeriego incapable of a serious relationship.

9. Tom gives the newlyweds a honeymoon in Acapulco. They drive away. The police arrive to arrest Efren.

Spanish Lesson. Lety Discovers What Fernando Discovered.

L: You’re right. It’s very strange that DonF hasn’t said anything. Why didn’t he tell everyone?
Tom: Well, you should ask him.
L: But how can I ask him? Am I going to say, “DonF, you need to explain to me..”
F: (Fernando walks in.) What? What do you want me to explain to you? (She hides the wallet behind her back.) What do you have in your hand? Why are you hiding it? What’s up? The right hand? (empty) The left hand? (empty) It’s magic!
Tom: C’mon, Lety. (Moves DonF in front of Lety) Show him. (Fern looks apprehensive. Lety holds up Fern’s wallet. Smiles nervously.)
L: There’s 500 pesos.
F: What? Do you need money? (Fern is broke but he opens his wallet to give her money.)
L: No, no, no. (In his wallet, Fern realizes the Aurora/Lety photo is missing. He panics. Lety holds out the picture. Fern snickers nervously.)
F: What’s so strange about drawing glasses on a photo?
L: Not to mention XG and braces. (Tom excuses himself.) Tell me the truth, DonF. Do you already know that.. the photo, with braces and glasses drawn in..
F: Oh! You think that I know that .. I don’t know what you’re talking about. I don’t know.
L: Enough, DonF. Do you know or don’t you? You know, don’t you?
F: Yes, Aurora Doña Lety.
L: Don Fernando… I don’t know what to tell you. I don’t know how to apologize.

F: (in his compassionate voice) Look, Doña Lety. Forget about it. You have nothing to explain, because I understand very well why you did it.
L: You do??
F: Yes. It wasn’t long ago that I realized it, but I kept the secret so it wouldn’t provoke a serious problem with Domensolin (and Lety doesn’t flinch).
L: Ay, DonF. Muchas grácias. Grácias de verdad. (She hugs him. His face expresses not euphoria like times past, but responsible concern. He kisses her hair with intensity, then gently separates them.)
F: That’s not all. You’re my boss. I should protect you because that’s what you did when you were my assistant, right? Ya. Tranquila. (He knows she’s sad; he does everything he can think of to cheer her up, and panics when she almost starts crying. The Prime Directive kicks in.) Enough of that. Tell me something. How did you do it, the day of the contract signing with Jacques? You appeared as Aurora, then Lety, then Aurora. Think about that instead. How did you do it? (He’s laughing, try to get her to laugh).
L: I don’t want to remember. It was the worst day of my life.

Thank you, Pata, for the great screen shots!

Acting task: carry an empty box that appears to be heavy. When the three men carry the boxes of sodas, Fernando’s appears to be very heavy, Aldo’s appears to be medium-heavy, and Celso’s appears to be an empty box.

At Paula’s wedding, when Fern talks to Aldo about Lety helping him, note the three viejos, Lopez, Erasmo, and Paco, on alert in case Fern causes trouble. But then Fern says he needs Lety to help him help two people find love, the three go back to talking. In fact, Paco gives a nod as if to say, “All clear.”

I figure that about two weeks have passed in the “días despues.” Caro says it’s been several days and Omar hasn’t said anything. If it had been three weeks or more, she would’ve said “weeks.” But they needed time to finish 12 episodes of the TV show. Also Saimon and Paula had to complete their marriage classes. And I think in Cap 293, Lety mentions to Aldo that they’ve finished their marriage classes (I’m not certain on that).

I think the Disengage Theory is becoming stronger and stronger. My summary includes some specific details on the topic.

What more does Fernando have to do to show Lety how much he loves her and is determined to put her first. Does he have to literally fall on his sword since he has already figuratively done so? Lety, get a clue; wake up and smell the roses (no pun intended). She goes into that little girl voice around Aldo and I am so, so, so tired of hearing it. Lety knows Fernando got the flowers in an effort to bring her and Aldo back together. Even Aldo knows this. So instead of being impressed with what Fernando did, she clings to Aldo. Hey Lety, let me draw you a picture. Fernando gave you the roses and he hadn't done anything wrong. Aldo didn't give you the roses, didn't think of doing anything to apologize to you, didn't even want to offer an explanation, and you go running back to him with your tail tucked between your legs. Grow up Lety. Aldo makes a rotten pacifier and you need to open your eyes to see the real truth.

Aldo even sucked Dona Julieta back into his web. He really needs to be a salesman because he could sell ice to the Eskimos.

Enough already. Are we going to be exposed to this Lety stupidity until the very last episode? At least half of the cuartel know that Lety and Fernando deserve to be together.

Once again, Lety and Aldo didn't match in their clothing. You see no passion or fireworks between them but when Lety held Fernando's coat, her body temperature rose. Lety said Tan Divino! and I agree. I've said it before and I'll say it again, what a man! Move over Lety, let someone who appreciates the quality of the new Fernando come in and make him extremely happy.

Hmm. I was thinking that maybe today disproved the Disengage Theory. It's one thing for Aldo to act as though he wants Lety to break up with him, but then why does he still mope and sigh her name when she's not around?

But I keep forgetting that the idea is that he loves her SO MUCH that he's willing to push her away. (It'd be helpful if he'd mumble "too bad I have to give her up" during his moping. Televisa's telenovelas are not known for their subtlety.)

Paula, I had to laugh at your observation about the empty/heavy boxes. I've noticed that the women in some telenovelas carry around gigantic fashionable purses that appear to be completely empty, without so much as a wad of crumpled newspaper inside to fill them out. (Maybe there's a cell phone, vial of poison, or other necessary prop in there, but that's all.)

I have a belated observation about last week's episodes - just a thought about the old "same/different" thing with Alicia and Lety. Lety's shown no interest in being intimate with Aldo. Alicia had no interest in being intimate with Tomy either.

Uh... it's not a perfect same/different, but then, we're not in Gaitan land, either. I was impressed that the parallel between the two characters was (somewhat) carried forward into the extension.

I agree with you Barbara - Lety definitely needs a map drawn for her now. I sort of think that Aldo has done all of the stuff to win Lety over to his side early on and now he doesn't feel like he has to prove anything anymore - his love should be enough for her. I think his looks today were more about being offended that anyone would doubt his love for her and I also think he was a tad bit miffed that she would tell other people that she's called the wedding off without telling him (at least I would be if I were in his situation).

I loved that today seemed to be all about clearing the air - loved that Fern and Lety finally know "all" the secrets between the two of them...that was a really nice moment and I loved it when you saw what a great friend Fern is to Lety - he really truly is the "perfect" man now (as Paula calls him). That was a nice assist from Tomy for once - in forcing her to ask Fern about it. Score one for Tomy!

I'm hoping that Omar and Caro will finally "clear the air" between them now that they are trapped in the room. By the way just a random question - does anyone know who owned the apartment they were in? That blue room? I just noticed a lot of the posters, etc and it seemed to be a masculine room so I'm assuming it was Saimon's place maybe? There was a big leadership framed photo with Mt. Rushmore on the wall that I noticed...

I thought PM looked the best today that she's looked this entire series...her makeup was great, her hair looked nice - I didn't love her dress, but I didn't expect much better from that character given what she wears on a daily basis.

I'm assuming they didn't let Lety break-up with Aldo today because if she'd broken up with him because she was jealous - it may not have been the right start for her relationship with Fern. They really are cutting it down to the wire though aren't they? I'd like at least a few (read more than 1 day)days of Lety/Fern happiness. This coming from someone who doesn't hate Aldo - I think he's not the right guy for Lety, but I think he's not a bad guy at all.

I meant to post these last week. Predictions Barbara made some time ago.

In 219/220, she said: One day Aldo is going to realize that Fernando is so deep in Lety's heart that nothing is going to remove him. Aldo may convince Lety and she may believe for a while, but eventually she'll realize that for her there's no one like Fernando.

In 177/178, she said: Fernando will see that another man could do for Lety what he could not and even though he will be jealous, he'll find that his love for Lety has become big enough to give her room to be with Aldo. He'll hurt like he's never hurt before. He's going to have to look deep inside of himself, make the necessary changes, and be reborn into a mature man that loves with a strength and a purity. It's this type of love that will yearn for Lety but also be willing to let her go if indeed her happiness is with Aldo.

I'm with you, Georgia Peach. Why do they always wait to the very last episode to let the star-crossed couple get together?????

I'm also with you about Aldo. He's not a bad guy & I don't blame him for being a bit miffed that Lety didn't believe HIM when he said that there was nothing between him & Carmina but she DID believe it when Fernando told her. That's another reason to let us have a day or two of bliss. Aldo deserves to find love again & it ought to take a bit of time for him to wake up & smell the Carmina -- oops I mean the coffee.

I forgot to say how much I liked your title, Paula -- and the screen shots. I especially like the one of Fernando & Lety joking around after he confessed to knowing about Aurora. All of their scenes together at the wedding were so natural and comfortble. Sort of reminds me of the way they were together before the seduction & before Fernando fell in love. Parallel???

I also hope that Caro & Omar will TALK to each other now that they are locked in that room!! It's time for them to stop moping and start groping.

Look carefully - very carefully - at the wording of the note with the flowers. “The love that distrusts is not love, and I need yours to continue living. –Aldo.”

If it was actually from Aldo, that’s no apology! It accuses her of non-genuine love! But.. if it’s Fernando saying it, then it’s a subtle hint that she doesn’t really love Aldo, and Fernando needs her to survive!

The summaries will be longer than I'd like, this week. It's unavoidable. I can usually keep them short by skipping the blither, but this week there is almost no blither.

In case anyone didn't know, the finale is Friday.

I don't think Aldo's terrible either, just annoying y cursi, like Fernando says.

As far as I can see, the disengage theory is supposed to mean that Aldo is pushing Lety away because he loves her?

Guera, I also think Aldo should just give Carmina a chance; the girl cannot be more ready to be with him.

I also agree with you guys that it would be nice if novelas would give more time for a couple to be together, rather than usually wrapping everything up the last day. However, we did get a good amount of time for Fern and Lety to be a couple, and they are friends now, which in most novelas, doesn't happen.

Oh, and that's very astute Paula, and a lovely sentiment on Fernando's part.

Alexis

I must disagree about Aldo. I find him so controlling that I don't wish him on any woman. He needs a taste of his own medicine with a woman who will rule him, at least temporarily. I wouldn't wish that for him for life.

The interactions between Fernando and Lety are lovely. They have an easy commaderie that speaks of their friendship in the real world. He is uber-protective of her and the note on the card was indeed very interesting. On one hand, it's no apology from Aldo, but he didn't write it. On the other hand, Fernando wrote it and he expressed his love for Lety and how necessary she is for him. Aldo would survive without Lety; he'd just go find someone else he could control. Permanently losing Lety would destroy Fernando. How changed he has become! The old Fernando was my happiness is the prime directive. The new Fernando is Lety's happiness and protection is the prime directive. Aldo only has the thought process of what's best for him and not what's best for Lety. He won't though share Lety with Fernando. That is too uncertain of a situation for a controller like him.

Lety needs to wake up and face the reality of her situation. She can't fathom making love with Aldo but she can hold Fernando's coat and say "Tan Divino!" with more emotion than when she says Aldo. We can see that her love for Fernando endures; she just can't see it.

Julieta knows that Lety's true happiness lies with Fernando. I think Fernando believes that also, but unlike Aldo, he's willing to let her figure that out for herself. Until Aldo is almost beaten over the head with Lety's love for Fernando, he won't let her go.

I'm sorry to see the show end on Friday. Eva Luna is ending tonight and Llena de Amor next week. I'm not interested in anything else that has come out. Will miss talking with everyone on this board. You ladies have been great to chat with. I love our discussions, our differences of opinions, and our love of La Fea.

BarbaraM,
I too will miss this board after Friday....
It has been wonderful sharing ideas and points of view. It's made watching this show even richer.
Have you tried the new novela Teresa? It's not on tonight because of EvaLuna, but starting tomorrow it will be 2 hour caps at night . It has caught my interest and I have enjoyed it so far. Contrast with Triunfo de Amor which I could not even finish the 1st cap.
If you watch EvaLuna, give Teresa a try.

Diann

paula maria's son has a funny hat

Goodnes Aldo's hair is longer than lety's.

ARE You F'N kidding me... Triunfo del Amor is the Bestestest next to Eva moon.... People these days need learn good taste...

Anon, did you notice how greasy Aldo's hair was today? Eww!

How I hate that they skipped the whole filming of the TV show! Wouldn’t it have been fun, with Fernando knowing that Aurora is Lety? Both for him taunting her, and also for him finding ways to protect her identity, without her realizing he was doing it. Also scenes with them talking more comfortably because she can hide behind her Aurora mask. And Aldo wouldn’t drag her away every time she tried to talk to Fernando.

In fact, Aldo would probably orchestrate opportunities for them to have MORE uninterrupted time together! Can’t you just see it? Aldo smiling smugly every time he sees Fernando flirting with Aurora? What a hoot!

I wish, when Fern discovered that Aurora was Lety, we would’ve seen him remember the kiss and realize that “his” Lety really kissed him like that.

What a breath of fresh air to see Lety and Fernando laughing and joking with each other. Even though he tells her she is his boss and he will support her it feels like they are becoming equals, more like pals. I think a great symbol of this is that they conspired together on behalf of Omar and Caro. They make a great team.

Paula, the conversation that you translated was definitely one of the most satisfying interactions between Fern and Lety thus far. It shows how much he has grown up and that she allowed herself to reveal some vulnerability.

Like a few others I don't hate Aldo and I hope he will be happy, however he is so clearly wrong for Lety that it's painful to watch. They don't bring out the best in each other, not a good foundation for a lifetime together.

I enjoyed the wedding scene because of all the goofy dancing and because Marcia looked like she was having a great time. I think she deserves some happiness.

Last episode is THIS Friday? Wow, it's going to be some week. I'm afraid I might not be able to watch Friday's episode until the end of the weekend. Bummer!

Great episode, terrific recaps, superb screen shots. I will miss this board VERY much.

Awwww. That would have been nice.

It really did seem odd to me that that whole thing was skipped, especially after all the filler we had to endure beforehand.

So, we are to believe that Lety and Aldo's relationship remained completely unchanged in the weeks that were skipped. I know Lety has been an oblivious stubborn dolt lately, but I can't quite believe that she wouldn't have gotten more fed up with Aldo during that time, or that something else wouldn't have happened. Two weeks is a long time for a fragile relationship.

Ditto Caro and Omar, for that matter. I can't imagine either of them moping for an additional two weeks. It's not in his nature and especially not in hers to mope and wallow for long. I think one would have approached the other by now.

But since that's not what happened, I'm grateful we were spared having to watch them whine for two weeks!

I was also sorry they skipped over the filming of the TV episodes. I was looking forward to all the interactions that you mentioned.

Did you notice that Lety was trying to convince Lola that she was pretty hot with the new hair color & style. Lola was disagreeing -- just like Lety always denies that she really is beautiful. She can't believe that Aurora really is her with a little makeup. Maybe Lety will see the parallel between Lola denying what Lety's eyes tell her and Lety denying what Caro's eyes tell HER.

I noticed that scene too Guera. I also noticed that Lety seemed to be wearing an almost decent outfit today, but I did wonder about why so many women (Caro, Lety and maybe even Marcia) were wearing black to the wedding...it's not a color I'd traditionally wear to a wedding if I'm happy about said wedding. :)

I wonder about the wardrobe choices for Lety in these back filler caps because she was doing well up until that big exhibition, then it all went downhill from there until last night. I hope from here on out she'll dress a lot better as "lety" and not "aurora." In fact it would be really nice if they gave us a real makeover before the last cap.

I hope that these last few caps will be satisfying to us for our patience...I'll also have to try watching some of the other TN's...I'll check out "Teresa" as recommended by Diann.

I have a few Full Circle moments from last week. I don't think I posted them; forgive me if this is a rerun.
1. The TV show script is for Lety, what the balance for the board was for Fernando. Lety worked all night on the balance, and Fern all night on the script. His survival depended on it. Lety got entangled in a mountain of lies over Aurora, just like Fernando's mountain of lies before the Doomsday meeting.

2. In the before time, Lety loved Fern body & soul. He loved her too, but far less. Now Fern loves Lety with absolute sacrificial love. Lety still loves him, but much less than he loves her, and that difference causes him agony.

3. In the before time, Fernando never considered Lety's pain. Now Lety never considers Fern's obvious pain.

4. In #70, Lety split with Fern so he could be happy with a beautiful, classy woman he deserved. In 288 he sacrifices everything so she can be happy with Aldo.

Fernando vs. Aldo. When Aldo followed Lety from Acapulco back to DF, he knew Lety loved Fern and Fern loved Lety, and he knew Lety didn't love Aldo. But he still kept pushing (e.g. San Miguel Regla). When Fern concluded Lety loved Aldo (when she hid Aurora), he immediately stepped aside for the sake of her happiness. Where does Aldo EVER exhibit self-sacrifice?

Watch for a blooper tomorrow. Fern and Jax are together. Something intense happens with Lety. Fern and Jax almost get the giggles.

Paula - good points in regards to the full circle moments...

I noticed 2 big differences between Fern & Lety with this extension:

- Fern does everything he can to make sure Lety and Aldo have a clear path to love (and their eventual wedding). I'm not so sure Lety ever does this for Fern although she did try to break up with him because of her guilt.

-Lety also over hears Aldo and realizes that he needs to get more of his money back to open this restaurant so she revisits the Aurora character and finishes the show. Lety is now willing to sacrifice the secret of Aurora getting out for her love of Aldo...which is interesting and something we don't discuss a lot here on this board. In fact this last back half has been all about Lety's fear of losing Aldo (for whatever reason). I don't recall Fern doing anything of this sort for Marcia even when he thought he'd lose her.

GP, here's a thought... Lety re-Aurorafying herself could be a sacrifice to help Aldo, but you could also see it as a sacrifice to help Fern, too. Because you know Fernando and his parents and the Villaroels aren't happy to owe all that money to Aldo.

I don't think Lety's fear of losing Aldo is so hard to understand. After the fiasco with Fernando, and that sick joke of a boyfriend she had as a teenager, Lety probably needs to prove to herself that she can "keep a man," no matter how miserable she feels in the process!

Interesting POV Julie on Lety's motivation for Aurorafying herself - maybe she does it subconsciously so she can free herself from her obligation to Aldo? Freeing her to be with Fern?

I wonder why she will only focus on keeping Aldo, but not taking a chance on Fern who has transformed himself into the perfect man? I think today (two weeks ago and then again at PM/Saimon's wedding) was the first day that she truly realizes the depth of Fern's love for her...I think he proved it with the flowers and then again by telling her that he'd kept her "Aurora" secret...she's finally seeing the light!

Georgia Peach, I don't think Lety is seeing the light yet. She's still obssessed with hanging onto Aldo. To her, Aldo represents safe love and Fernando represents dangerous love. The problem is that she doesn't love Aldo like she loves Fernando and never will and never can. Maybe right now, Lety's love for Aldo is enough for him, but eventually it won't be. They both need to wake up before they make the ultimate mistake. Personally, I don't think Lety would enjoy having sex with Aldo no matter how hard he tried to make it romantic, tender, etc. She just doesn't have that emotional connection to him like she has with Fernando.

Possibly another reason that Aldo represents safe love is that Letty isn't as emotionally invested in Aldo as she was in Fernando. Yes, she does seem to be clinging to Aldo, but I doubt she would feel as devastated to lose Aldo as she felt when she thought Fernando betrayed her. Not only is Fernando dangerous because of the "fool me twice shame on me" issue, but also because she can't help but give herself over completely in her love for him. That's pretty scary and would take a leap of faith for anyone, much less someone who has been burned.

Great analysis, Sylvia. I think you hit the nail on the head. Lety has to take a huge leap of faith to be with Fernando but not with Aldo. She's so unsure of herself that she can't make that leap at this moment. Don't know what it will take - maybe the revealing of Aurora - but she's got to find the backbone and the strength to embrace what she has now and has had with Fernando. No other man but Fernando will ever be able to touch the deepest part of her. When she gave herself to Fernando at Omar's apartment, she gave herself forever. She now has to realize that and so does Aldo. I think Fernando knows that but his love for Lety is so big, strong, and wide that he'll give her the space to find the truth herself. Tan Divino!

Barbara - I think Lety sees that Fern really loves her - it doesn't mean she's acting upon it...but I think she sees it. I def saw the realization in her during their conversation in the blue room today. Now realizing it and acting upon what you know are two different things. It took Fern a long time to cut his ties with Marcia even though he KNEW that he loved Lety most of all even if it had been over for a long time. I think Lety ending her engagement on Friday's caps - was the beginning of the end. She ended it and thought to herself that maybe marriage just isn't for her...so I think she sees the beginnings of the light for sure. Now she just needs to start moving in the right direction. Fern is doing everything right - he just has to be patient and wait.

Decie Girl gave us a nice list of telenovela conventional overly dramatic plot twists in answer to Paula's question about what was missing from LFMB last Friday (nice list!). Having given this some amount of thought (obviously some avoidance behavior here) I think that LFMB is more of a hybrid- maybe a 'sitcomnovela' or something clever that I can't come up with at this point :-)

I actually enjoyed most of Ugly Betty which was not a pure sitcom but it was often funny but it certainly wasn't a soap opera of any sort. Not a 'dramedy' either (awful term). LFMB is overloaded with slapstick comedy which makes me squirm. I might be one of the very few who didn't Love Lucy. Has anyone watched a telenovela like this before- with so much comedy and so little of the goofy plot twists? Is a telenovela a soap opera or is that something else all together? Why am I spending so much time concerned about this when we just narrowly evaded a government shut down??????

Perhaps after this I'll watch some of Betty La Fea for more comparison but I preferred Ugly Betty. And, I'll add Bridget Jones although it's not quite the same for her. But, both U Betty and Bridget made mistakes but dang it, they were both plucky and moved forward. I think Lety STARTED plucky but then went rogue when the extensions started. She cries, she whines, she doubts, she agrees to marry Ferni and in the next scene is not. Hopefully the plucky heroine returns really, really soon. Does anyone read novels where we invest a lot of time and effort and after so many chapters of sweat and struggle they are wrapped up in about 12 pages? This is starting to feel like that. It's like, okay, we've done this long enough so let's write the ending. The End. :-)

Not only do the recappers all rock, the rest of you are full of helpful information and good answers to help with my avoidance of real work as I struggle with weighty LFMB analysis...

Alexis, you asked about the Disengage Theory. The first time I watched Fea, I thought Aldo was written very inconsistently in the extension (the morning after Fern proposes). So much of what he did didn’t make sense. So this time I tested the theory that he was trying to ditch Lety. Looking at it through that lens, his actions make a lot more sense.

Now, WHY would he disengage? Because he loves Lety so much as you suggest? Because he can’t stand not being able to control her as Barbara holds? Because he’s a pretty good guy as GP thinks? Not sure. The biggest clue was in 224 when he said, “My love is so great, if I knew Fern would make her happy I would step aside immediately.” Then in 280 he tells Fern, “I’m sure that Lety would’ve been very happy with you.” Since then, he has taken increasingly forceful actions, apparently to make her dump him. Maybe it’s because he loves her and wants the best for her, just like Fern. Or maybe it’s because he’s concluded that Lety will never stop loving Fern, and he doesn’t want to be his wife’s second-stringer. Or maybe because, regardless of his desires, he knows it’s wrong to marry a woman who loves someone else.

Alexis, I agree, we did get Fern and Lety happy together – during the 30 caps of bliss, and now as they are good friends.

Hi DrJ. There is a funny thing about telenovela heroines/protaganistas, a lot of the time they are wimps, whiners, harpies and altogether not very likeable. I'm not sure why this is but from my perspective the truly enjoyable, plucky heroines are few and far between. Typically they don't move forward with regularity, they backslide into stupidity, believe ridiculous lies and make every decision possible that will thwart their happy ending. This is the way the parts are often written and it can drive the viewer crazy. So with that perspective Lety is actually much more admirable than the typical telenovela protaganista.

Regarding the slapstick, definitely not subtle and is often found in the comedy-type telenovelas although perhaps not to the excess as it is here. Our choices are either to fast forward to give in to it.

Others will likely have a different perspective than I but that's my two cents worth.

Barbara, you said, "Julieta knows that Lety's true happiness lies with Fernando. I think Fernando believes that also." I don't think so. I think he's really convinced that Lety totally loves Aldo, and will only be happy with him (Aldo). When he released her the morning ofter their engagement, THAT was to give her space to decide. But when he delivered the flowers in Aldo's name, that was so Lety could be happy, even if it was with Aldo.

You also suspect that Aldo won't let her go, like Fern did. On the contrary. I think that right now, he is trying to make her leave him. He knows she loves Fern. If Aldo dumped her, it would be messy. But if Lety dumps him for being rotten, then Lety will let go and recover faster. But it's Lety, not Aldo, who keeps clinging, despite all the sings that say "RUN AWAY!"

You friends have no idea how much I've enjoyed our discussions. Fea is so rich, it screams for discussion. The first time, I watched it alone on disk, with no one to discuss with. Now I have not only a community, but marvelously thoughtful, analytical, creative, interesting comments from everyone. Pardon me for being cursi, but I suspect I will never again have a novela experience as rich as this has been.

One more comment for DrJ, those were some very astute observations that you made in comparing Ugly Betty with La Fea. I wonder how instrumental Salma Hayek was in developing the Ugly Betty character? Was she frustrated by dopey telenovela protagonistas? Don't get me wrong, there have been some wonderful telenovela heroines, it's just that often they are kind of annoying.

Deciegirl's list of common telenovela motifs is awesome. Didn't one group of recappers play telenovela bingo on their show with something like that?

Paula, the discussions on this board have reminded me of my days as a Lit student. I've often thought that the commenters (and recappers) on Caray Caray are relentless thinkers. The discussions on La Fea have proven it absolutely.

One thing to support your argument Paula that Aldo is trying to push Lety away - he doesn't go to see her at all after hearing that his engagement to her is broken. He doesn't even try to call her or e-mail her or anything...that was a strange reaction. Maybe he was giving her time to cool off, but I could see this as evidence of him forcing Lety to break-up with him.

Thank you Paula for trying this experiment with LFMB - it's been a pleasure and I only wish that I'd started watching and commenting earlier! I've learned a great deal from both boards... :)

Since this is my first real TN I don't have a lot to add to the conversation about typical TN storylines... although DrJ - sometimes the slapstick stuff does wear a little thin for me and I mostly love it. I found myself really hating the earlier moments with Lety (just found the character so socially awkward), but the only one I don't mind watching in those moments is Jaime. He's truly very talented with physical/slapstick comedy.

Oh I meant to comment on Lety's impression of an old lady with Caro today. I thought that the entire scene was nice with the two of them and it was good to see Angelica Vale get to shine a little - because lately I've sort of forgotten how good she is as an actress.

Paula, I hate to disagree with you, but I do. Fernando knows that Lety's true happiness would be with him but because she states that she's in love with Aldo, Fernando steps aside. The reason I say this is that Fernando would not persist in a relationship with Lety if he thought he couldn't be the one to make her happy. But since she is confessing she loves Aldo, and Fern will not go against the prime directive, he'll give her what she wants. I guess it sounds convoluted, but these characters in La Fea have so much to them.

Aldo not going to Lety to talk with her after being told she was calling off the wedding was a telling sign. I don't know if it was so much pushing Lety away or simply arrogance on Aldo's part. He doesn't believe he's done anything wrong; he never does. But he has encouraged Carmina just like he did Luigi. It suits his plans to have Carmina hanging all over him. His statement of he'll wait until Lety calms down is bull. If you really want to marry someone and she says to someone else that she is calling off the wedding, you's hot foot it over to talk with that person. But Aldo wants Lety to come to him because it demonstrates his control over her. If he apologizes to Lety then Aldo feels he's lost a measure of control. Fernando, on the other hand, knows he doesn't have control over Lety and doesn't want to have it. He wants her to be free to make her own decisions even if the final outcome destroys him. It's the sacrificial love. I still believe that Fernando knows he can make Lety happy but he is willing to yield so that she can choose of her own free will.

I find the contrast between Lety with Aldo and Lety with Fernando so very interesting. I think deep inside Lety knows that Aldo needs her to need him. So she proceeds to cling to him, use that awful baby talk, and basically let him take over her life. The moments when she stands up to him, it's always her caving in and asking for forgiveness. Lety has a similar mindset to an abuse victim. That person ends up believing that all the problems are because of her (ala Lety) and is brainwashed to stay within that abusive environment. I am not saying that Aldo is abusive, at least not physically. But he is manipulative.

When you have Lety with Fernando, she's got backbone. She acts and talks like the grown woman she is and she doesn't cling to Fernando. Lety enjoys being in Fernando's company. Don't know if we can say the same for her being with Aldo.

Barbara, it doesn't bother me so it shouldn't bother you!

But I'm not sure I understand you. You said, "Fernando would not persist in a relationship with Lety if he thought he couldn't be the one to make her happy." But right now, he's NOT persisting in a relationship. He's not just stepping aside. He is taking active measures to get them married -
* the flowers
* tells MamaJ he doesn't think Aldo is cheating on Lety, despite the photo and the hug
* refusing to disclose that Lety's Aurora, despite tremendous personal loss.
Or maybe I don't understand what you meant. I confess, the whole tangled thing is making my brain crack.

I think that almost everyone else knows that Lety will ONLY (important word) be happy with Fernando, most of all MamaJ and Irma. Fern can't see that because he has a special kind of blindness. He adores Lety so he believes everything she says. If she says she's happy with Aldo, he believes her.

I'm sure Fern is sure he could make Lety happy, if she let him. But I think he thinks Aldo can make her happy too, because she says so. And if she's unwilling as she is right now, then Fern can't make her happy and Aldo can.

But as I said, it's getting confusing.

Just today we had four items that seem to support the Disengage Theory.

1. After the PV photo and the fight, Lety cancels the wedding. Aldo does nothing to win her back. He tells Team Aldo she’s just throwing a tantrum. He’ll just sit back.

2. When MamaJ & Fernando catch them hugging. A. he says, “Nothing I say can convince you,” BEFORE MamaJ and Fern say anything; B. he stops Carmina’s explanation; and C. Carmina said he chose not to explain PV to Lety. IOW he was determined to prevent an explanation.

3. After Lety gets the flowers, she apologizes for getting upset and tells him how much she loves him, IOW the wedding is back on. His response? He reprimands her for believing Mendiola. See the screenshot, Aldo at his desk.

4. Lety goes to see Fern, comes back, and gives Aldo a big hug. Fern convinced her that Aldo’s not involved with Carmina. Is he delighted that she’s back?? Not in the slightest. See the Cap 292 screenshot.

I don't know if Fernando knows that Lety's true happiness would be with him or not... but maybe it doesn't matter. If he doesn't know it, then he believes that she'd be happier with Aldo, and he's supporting her in that. If he DOES know it, then, again, it's being overruled by a sincere desire to support her choice.

Either way, his new Prime Directive is to honor her choices and respect her wishes. This is a higher Prime Directive than "Lety Must Not Suffer," because honestly, not all suffering is bad - sometimes it brings growth, we saw that in Fernando - and he has to let it be Lety's decision to accept the risk.

Whereas for Aldo, respecting Lety's wishes has been a struggle ever since he left Acapulco. (It wasn't a problem when they were IN Acapulco.)

Normally I wouldn't encourage buying DVD's not produced by the studios, but this company was ok - i got my discs within the week and because Televisa edits heavily I wanted the full set. (My guilt over piracy is slightly assuaged now)
