Teresa Mon 4/4/11 #4 Not ashamed of being poor -- ashamed of staying poor

Caray still needs recappers for this telenovela; if you're interested, email Melinama at caray@mappamundi.com

Many thanks to Vivi for this recap!

-At the university Teresa does her best to lower Aurora’s assessment of Mariano by pointing out that he is NOT a student at the university, that he is poor, and that he’s taxi driver and flighty jack of all trades. None of this seems to matter to Aurora, she keeps staring at him with stars in her eyes. Mariano returns the starry gaze, while alternating staring daggers at Teresa. Teresa needles Aurora by bringing up her mother’s death, even though Aurora doesn’t like to talk about it (another things she and Mariano have in common). Mariano is super excited to hear Aurora is studying medicine, as it is noble work helping others. But he does not mention this is what he was studying, or that he used to be a college student at all. He gives her his taxi service card and tells her she can call him any time for anything. When he leaves, Teresa tries to twist the knife a bit more by telling Aurora that Mariano is in love with her (Teresa). So in addition to the fact that he’s a poor guy her father will never accept, he has no interest in Aurora. Teresa come out of devious mode, and is genuinely proud of her friend, when Aurora says Mariano’s enthusiasm for medicine convinced her that she must tell her father today that becoming a doctor is not for her.

-Rosita and Johnny decide to become officially (secret) novios and seal it with a kiss. Rosita has one of her fainting spells in the middle of the kiss. Johnny insists in taking her to the doctor. She refuses, not wanting anything to get in the way of her competing in the gymnastics tournament. She makes Johnny promise not to tell anyone. When her father comes upon them and becomes suspicious about them looking so cozy, Johnny spills the beans about Rosita’s fainting spells. Now Armando is determined for Rosita to go to the doctor and to cool it with the gymnastics. Rosita is ticked off at Johnny.

-Mariano interrupts Teresa’s studying at home (but she makes sure her boobs are pushed up and she is in “sexy studying” pose) to reproach Teresa for trying to make him look bad in front of Aurora. He accuses her of being jealous and points out that, unlike her, he’s proud of his humble roots.

-Ruben is determined that Esperanza remain his mistress on call. He does not want her to work, and reminds her how difficult it was for them to see each other when she used to work. Between her job, her family and her sick brother, there would be no time for him. Booh, frickin hoo! Instead he gives her more money and the name of a doctor for her brother. Esperanza convinces the nice doctor to not only do a house visit, but to also not dispel her family’s belief that he’s a friend of hers from the hospital where she supposedly works. He gives her brother a shot and says it will alleviate some of the symptoms for now, but he really should be brought in for more tests. Esperanza’s mom is happy that her daughter’s “friend” would do this “favor.” While she is out of site, Esperanza pays the doctor his fee of 600 pesos for the visit. Mariano sees this exchange.

-We find out that the favor Teresa asked Arturo was to come to her house, speak to her parents, and convince them to accept the offer. Mariano sees him and gives him a hard time. He’s shocked to hear Teresa already accepted his “offer” (these people really need to get their minds out of the gutter). Refugio is so pissed, she nearly strikes Teresa. Armando is more open to hear what the professor has to say. The professor convinces Armando, and Armando makes him swear that he doesn’t have any other intentions with his daughter. Armando accepts the deal, as silent and sullen Refugio looks on. Armando prays to the family altar for Teresa’s success. Refugio prays that Teresa continues to know her place. Teresa says she does indeed know her place—THE BEST. (You go girl!)

-Aurora goes to her father’s(Hector) office to tell him about her change in major. She manages to say she is scared of blood. He brushes that off as normal. He was the same. Time and experience will take care of that. In fact, he’ll arrange soon for her to see an actual surgery in action. Oh goody! Aurora is bowled over by his enthusiasm and chickens out of telling him. Later that evening at home, Hector sees that Aurora is pensive and asks what’s up. She explains that she likes a boy, who likes someone else. Hector sees no problem with this. The other girl has no interest in him. He’s single and Aurora is single. She should go for it! Aurora clutches Mariano’s card and looks like she’s taking dad’s advice to heart.

-The vecinidad throws an impromptu party to celebrate Teresa going to the good university. Mariano has to be practically dragged to the party by his father (Ramon). It is clear that Ramon, Juana, and just about everyone else in the vecinidad want Mariano and Teresa to get back together. Later, a very pleased with herself Teresa gets Mariano to admit he was jealous of the professor. He gets her to admit that she was jealous of Aurora. They both admit that they still love each other. And then we finally get a long, lingering, scorching KISS.

One more thing I forgot, that might be important later-- Ruben gives Esperanza a cell phone (having a cell phone is a big deal for poor people) so that she can really be his "call girl." Esperanza tells Teresa how Ruben doesn't want her to work, and about his paying for the doc to see her brother. Teresa still thinks that Esperanza needs to be able to support herself, and should work. She suggests that Esperanza get a part time job-- being a home care nurse for an old or sick person (very good idea). Esperanza likes the idea and thinks she could do it on the weekends, since that's the time Ruben spends with his family and she never sees him then.

I wonder if Refugio's real concern is that if Teresa rub shoulders with these rich people, she'll never come back to the hood, rather than "Professor trying to take advantage of my innocent daughter."

I wonder if she also objected when Teresa got the scholarship to the rich kids' school.

I see a possible romance between the doctor and Teresa's friend.

Tonight was the first time I could believe Ana Brenda as a "good girl", when her dad kept insisting she be a doctor.

Hi, Anon207. :-) Refugio said it, talking to Arturo -- she doesn't know much about these things. She seems afraid of what she doesn't understand, but still bound to protect her child.

Do you mean Esperanza and Pablito's doctor might have a romance?

Do we know what day our 1 recapper and our ½ recapper have chosen? Here’s what I remember from the episode:

-At the university Teresa does her best to lower Aurora’s assessment of Mariano by pointing out that he is NOT a student at the university, that he is poor, and that he’s taxi driver and flighty jack of all trades. None of this seems to matter to Aurora, she keeps staring at him with stars in her eyes. Mariano returns the starry gaze, while alternating staring daggers at Teresa. Good morning. :-) Thanks so much, Vivi; I'll edit that in.

I left a message in Melinama's blog post asking what days the other people want, but no news last time I checked.

Thanks for the links Jeri!

Vivi, thank you for your generous time, preparing this marvelous recap. You perfectly captured how quickly the chameleon like Teresa can change her personna: "Teresa come out of devious mode, and is genuinely proud of her friend". Other of my favorite lines were: “sexy studying pose" and "Booh, frickin hoo!" Excellent.

BTW, Ruben has already gotten on my last nerve - the less we see of him, the better.

Aurora is showing a bit of spunk too isn't she?? She's not letting Teresa completely deter her from pursuing Mariano is she?

Loved that Teresa was encouraging of Esperanza to stand on her own two feet.

Rulli is looking very hawt. It will be interesting to see how their relationship develops.

Diana

I hope Scarlet will once again forget about Ashley and fall in love with Rhett here. Ashley is for Melanie. :-)

Rhett is much better looking, IMO. Way hawter, Diana.

I'm glad Teresa made clear she's not ashamed of being poor -- just would be ashamed of STAYING poor.

Mariano does not understand her at all; and I agree with her reasons for breaking up with him.

Everyone thinks he should have stuck with his medical studies, except him, apparently. He's weak like Ashley Wilkes in that way.

Love your GWTW comparisons Jeri and of course you're right - Mariano does not have any idea what makes Teresa tick...

Diana

Jeri, thanks for the links.

Vivi, thanks for the summary. It is going to take some time to sort this one out. All these actors are new to me except AB (Teresa) and Ana Brenda. Rulli reminds me of Jorge over on Llena, I have been doing a double take when he comes on the screen. But once he speaks, no problem. He doesn't do that annoying "th" thing.

Rosemary

I will be dong my first recap ever this week! In my email I said I could do any day, but threw Wednesday out there just to pick a day. I can work around anyone else's schedule if someone wants to recap and can only do Wednesday... but for this week, let's say I am going to do mine this week on Wednesday. Does that work with everyone??

Samantha: That's great - I'm eagerly looking forward to your recap!

Diana

Thanks for the fun recap, Vivi. I liked how you said Esperanza can now really be Ruben's "call girl".:) I do hope she drops Ruben and goes with that Doctor (unless he's married, too).

I was glad Arturo was able to convince the family he had no bad intentions. How could anyone resist him, professional, calm (and of course good looking).

I especially liked how Teresa was dressed for this meeting, strapless top, tiny jeans shorts, long legs, sexy heels. I can see why Mariano can't resist her. But it does look as if he may be hurt in the long run.

Jonny was funny when Rosita wanted them to be novios. He already has to do whatever Armando says, because Armando's his boss in the car repair shop. But now he'll be his suegro, too!

Both Teresa and Rosita know how to get their Daddy to do whatever they want. Armando definitely has his hands filled with the two of them and Refugio.

Hi all, I just finished a Teresa marathon, catching up on all the episodes I had recorded. First of all thanks to Aribeth for the first recap, it was very helpful. Also, thanks to Jeri and Vivi for the headers, recaps and screen shots.

I'm still not quite sure what to make of this one yet but I hope you get enough recappers to continue. I like the acting very much and Teresa gets some great zinger lines. I could do without Mariano's "pelo naco", not the best look for him, and Manuel Landeta's hairpiece throws me every time he's on screen but I guess I'll get used to it. (Who knew I was so obsessed with hair?) It's fun to see Aaron Diaz not have to play the piñata like he did in Soy Tu Dueña, must be a relief for him to be the whacker for a change instead of the whackee.

Teresa sure lives in a nosy vecindad, no wonder she wants out.

Samantha, thanks so much for stepping up as a recapper. Good for you!! I look forward to your first recap.

Jeri- I really like that you chose that line from Teresa as the title. I think both she and Arturo have the same attitude-- it's not where you come from, it's where you're going that counts. He did not seem affected at all by Teresa's less than fancy home and surroundings. I like that about him. He gets straight to the point and doesn't play games.

Samantha- I can't wait for your recap on Wed. You're going to do great! :)

Sylvia- Are you thinking of David Zapeda from STUD? Val's ex fiancé? Aaron Diaz is an actor I've not seen in other novelas before. I hope you stick with us here because I always enjoy your comments. Jarocha has said that this novela is old school, in that it takes its time to build the story and introduce the characters and their motivations.

I agree with those of you who say that Mariano really doesn't understand Teresa. She doesn't understand him either. I think Arturo is a better match for her as they seem to have a similar world view and level of ambition.

Thank you Jeri for the YouTube links and Vivi for the recap. Refugio seems really afraid that Teresa would leave them all in the dust the more she is around the higher class folks. Maybe that's why she said in her prayer that she wants Teresa to know her place.

Rosita is really pushing herself to succeed in gymnastics to the detriment of her health. I don't think she should be angry at Johnny for telling Armando.

I'm thinking Teresa is really trying to nip in the bud Aurora's interest in Mariano while Mariano is definitely threatened by Arturo and marking his territory. I'm liking this tangled plot so far.

"I hope Scarlet will once again forget about Ashley and fall in love with Rhett here. Ashley is for Melanie. :-)"

Same here Jeri. Arturo is a better match for Teresa like Rhett was for Scarlet. He understands her better than Mariano does and their chemistry is palpable. I'm for Arturo and Teresa all the way.

Thanks for the recap Vivi and thank you Jeri por opening the discussion and the links.

I love Sebastián Rulli as the hottie professor, sigh. I thought Teresa's condition was great, she knows her parents and she knows how to get her way.

I feel bad already for Mariano. Aurora needs to borrow some of Teresa's guts to tell her dad she doesn't want to become a doctor.

Sylvia nice to see you here. I hope you stay with us.

Hee, my word verification is "coment". Blogger was feeling lazy.

Jarocha

Oh Vivi you're right. I got the actors mixed up. They look kind of similar. What have I seen Aaron Diaz in? Just Barrera de Amor I guess.

Yep, Teresa and Arturo have much better chemistry. I also like how he wasn't at all phased by her neighborhood nor Mariano's anemic posturing (with his tiny screwdriver, what was up with that?). He's kind of like a grownup. What a concept.

Vivi, I'm going to give this one a try but my comments will probably be spotty for the next couple of weeks as we're wrapping up double episodes of Llena de Amor plus I'm watching La Fea, also double episodes. Too much TV!!

Hi Jarocha, I'm watching partly because of your recommendation and your description of the protagonista.

When Refugio said was that she wanted Teresa to "saber siempre cual es su lugar" that means she wanted Teresa to respect herself always (from the saying "darse su lugar" which means to respect oneself) and Teresa used the more literal meaning when she responded she knew her place was the best.

Jarocha

Hi Sylvia, I'm glad. I hope you found my description fitting, I don't think of Teresa as evil as Uni made her sound.

Jarocha

Aurora's dad seems like a good guy, if maybe a little pushy about his daughter following in his footsteps. I belive that he knows Teresa is poor, and had no problem with her and Aurora being friends. This makes me wonder whether or not he would be accepting of Aurora dating Mariano. I can't see him being thrilled if she was dating a poor, going nowhere taxi driver. But I could picture him being ok with her dating a poor med student. Perhaps he could do for Mariano what Arturo is doing for Teresa-- take a protege under his wing and support him in his studies. He gets a son in law who's a doctor, instead of a daughter.

Of course, Mariano should go back to med school, no matter what. Not just to impress Teresa, Aurora or Aurora's dad. I understand him wanting to help his dad pay off their debt, and not wanting his dad to work to death, but his dad wants him back in school. And in the long run, when Mariano becomes a doctor, he can lift his dad out of debt and poverty forever. He needs to start thinking long term. This is something Teresa is good at.

Jarocha- Thank you for that other meaning of "darse su lugar." This tn uses such clever word play, which usually comes out of Teresa's mouth.

Samantha! Thank you so much for volunteering; Wednesday sounds good to me.

Besides Teresa's title line here, I liked where Arturo pointed out to Mariano that if he, as Teresa's neighbor, can care about her welfare -- then certainly Arturo, as her professor, can well do so, too.

Samantha- Did you get all your instructions from Melinama on how to upload a recap? Feel free to e-mail me or Jeri (click on our names) if you get stuck or have questions.

Jeri, thank you for the links, and Vivi, thank you for the summary! I fell behind with the show but I'll watch the episodes tomorrow.

It seems making GWTW comparisons will be our fate. :) I like them.

Samantha, welcome, and thanks for volunteering so much!

Vivi, thanks for the recap. Your "call girl" line was lol.

Agree Teresa is better with the professor, than Mariano. Teresa and the prof snap and crackle. Mariano's in danger of arrested development if doesn't make a change soon. I wonder how long it will take Aurora to realize Teresa is not really her friend. Close-knit neighborhoods can be stifling - poor Esperanza couldn't even slip the doctor the payment without Mariano seeing it.

I'm so glad I could come here today. I was annoyed with myself as I watched the episode on Jeri's links,(thanks Jeri), because I felt myself becoming frustrated with our Ashley, I mean Mariano, as he piddled around on the steps and over polished his taxi. I felt like I was pulling a "Teresa" by not appreciating him for what he is, a kind, thoughtful but, non-ambitious guy. Now I see that others here see him as man with so much potential, who gave up his dream to help his mom, but for some reason can't get himself motivated again. It is in his and his father’s best interests to go back to med school. He needs to get his "ride" out of neutral into drive!

I am very disappointed in Teresa, she was cruel. For a person who was just very publically humiliated, she was dishing the same slurs, being “pobre” to Mariano. Shame on you Teresa! I'm glad Aurora saw past the cab driving digs into Mariano's kind inner soul. I saw quiet smoldering sparks. Yes, maybe Aurora’s father will mentor Mariano into some challenging career.

Hombre, I thought Teresa looked like Daisy Duke in her "sexy study" pose outfit!

What is the English translation for naco, red neck, hillbilly, from the hood? It is used a lot on Spanish blogs. I know what it means, but don't know the English equivalent!

Welcome today's new posters!

Thanks Vivi....awesome as usual. I liked your three types of people analysis from the other day as well.

I think deep down Teresa thinks Aurora is just like Paolo, Aida, etc. and will laugh at and reject her for her poverty. The thing with Mariano is she doesn't want him but doesn't want anyone else to want him either.

Jeri and Aribeth, Thanks for getting things started with this telenovela. Both of you, along with Vivi, have helped build the interest in this show.

Vivi, thanks for such a thorough recap of last night's happenings. And, as always, your insights are right on target.

I really don't want to get sucked into another show, so I almost hope that Teresa becomes evil! And quickly! I would be less interested in her character. Right now, I too like Teresa's brash self-confidence that apparently can be justified by her intelligence as well as her willingness to work hard to get what she wants. I loved her advising Esperanza that a girl needs to be able to take care of herself.

Does anyone else think that Refugio would try to spend some of her worrying time plotting to get Teresa to dress a little less, uhm, flamboyantly? What happened to studying in old T-shirts and sweats? This girl definitely would make the ol' biblioteca the place to be.......

Though Rosita does not look as young as she is supposed to be (14-15?) especially at some angles, there is NO way that Johnny looks like an appropriate boyfriend for her. He looks like a 30 year old man, while she is a young girl. It really turns me off--I need to get an age blindness beanie if this relationship continues.

Samantha, thanks for volunteering to do Wednesdays. You will have an appreciative audience.

why are arturo's lips so chappy/purple? is it just bad makeup?
they put it on the rest of his face...

what kind of football does paulo play? futbol? or tackles? his lip looked like he had the herp after that punch!

jonny could be a real standout with his perfect 10 mary lou retton imitation. his eyes really get me with those gorgeous lashes. watch the movie called "sleep dealer" if you have a crush on him too.

thank you recappers!!!
-mai tai

Barbara,  Yes! Refugio should concentrate on the sexy vibe that her ample daughter is transmitting to the men of Mexico City!  By the way, how did poor Teresa afford her "enhancements".....Sorry! Just had to ask!

I am so into Refugio. She sees the big "all caps" handwriting on her casita walls........handsome professor + sexy super student daughter  = una problema.  I would be reluctant in her situation too. Her husband, being a pragmatist thinks, I see nothing but  a free education for my daughter!

I'm kind of circumspect about Refugio's motivations: Teresa is her daughter and must have some of her or her family's character traits.

I'm suspicious Refugio's got other reasons for being so hard on her daughter. Is some reason hiding in her past to cause her such nerves?

Thanks everybody! I'm excited. Here's to hoping it's not a complete failure, (in which case, I would be happy to make a longer committment.)

Oh, and I haven't been given specific instructions about how to upload, but I have a good amount of experience using blogger, so I assume it will be okay? I'll make sure to copy everything in case something goes wonky on me!
ALSO I'm on the West Coast so the recap won't be up right away for you East Coasters!

Samantha- That's great that you're acquinted with blogger. But I think the instructions are more about how to tag the recap properly in all the places that people come to this site and recap. It often takes trial and error, but in the end one of us could always post and tag it for you. E-mail me and I will send you the instructions Melinama (Blog Mom) sent all of us, along with tips.

Thanks for the recap/summary, it really helped my understanding of the ep.

Does anyone know what "cara de fuchi" means? Teresa said it, when she told Mariano he shouldn't have a rich girlfriend, since all the rich people would look at him with cara de fuchi, I rewound it and then looked it up on google translate but there was no description, and I'm getting the spelling from the subtitles....

Richard- I found this for you:
It means that the person who they are talking about/to made an ugly face//the other person does not agree/like what is being said or asked to do.

Let's say that the mom serves the kid vegetables. The kid looks at the plate and his face expression is one of "I really hate carrots and broccoli". The mom may say: No pongas cara de fuchi y come las verduras. [Don't you give me that expression and eat your vegetables/Don't give me that gross out look!]

Thanks Vivi! That's interesting that the fuchi word seems only to be used with the concept of making a face.
