Cuando Me Enamoro #41 Thursday 6/16/11 The Ice Man Cometh and the Ice Man Stayeth

Last night: We, and Jero, left Renata on the steps of the funeral home. Poor Renata doesn’t understand, what could be more important than going with her to Aggie’s memorial service? This is NOT a good start to this marriage.

Another troubled marriage: Coni mopes and then calls Chema. She asks him to join her for a coffee and he hops to.

Renata joins the family and hugs her BFF Adriana. At least everyone there is glad to see her.

Matilde’s godmother Manuela meets Carlos and mistakes him for el patron, it’s very cute. He’s gracious and welcomes her. Carlos mentions that the real el patron will arrive with his wife Renata which causes Matilde to go into a snit. Manuela sets her straight and Mati gripes there is no guy in the whole town for her. Open your eyes Missy!!

House call for Roberta: The doc says they must monitor her continually as it appears she has pre-eclampsia and it’s more dangerous for Roberta than for the baby. Something about it usually showing up after about the fifth month of pregnancy I think. Roberta pouts about having to stay in bed but the doc says don’t worry, he’ll examine her next week and they will also find out the sex of the baby. Rob set her big old chops in a nasty scowl.

Regina cries over her recently received photo of Reginita, poor thing.

Gonzo tells Nata he is not happy to hear that Jero left for the hacienda when this is supposed to be their honeymoon. Matias overhears and clenches his manly jaw.

Constanza tells Chema she should have stayed with Honorio but she just couldn’t. I couldn’t understand what Chema said because the waterfall behind him was too loud, but Cons calls him a good boy and he reacts. “I’m not a boy, I’m a man.” He holds her hand and comforts her, telling her she can count on him...always.

Regina sees Aggie’s death notice in the paper and she says poor Adri must be devastated.

Our Dr. Carlos was right: Jero arrives at La Bonita and announces he’s alone because Nata’s BFF’s mom just died. Mati pipes up sarcastically “She abandoned you so quickly?” (Hooray Mati for stating the obvious!!) Carlos and Lazaro give her the stink eye and Jero escapes to his room. Lazaro gets on her case but Mati thinks that Jero should have stayed by her side. At least that’s what she was taught.

Jero sees the monogrammed sheets (gift from Kari), rips them off the bed, folds them carefully so the monograms show, and then throws them in the trash. What a Jerko!

Aggie goes into the earth and everyone cries. Regina stands in the background. Gonzo sees her and asks why isn’t she up front with everyone else? Regina didn’t want to cause trouble with Fina. She tells him she is there for Adriana, not for him. He suggests life is throwing them together.

Renata comforts a crying Honorio and tells him she knows Aggie must have been important to him too. She asks about Constanza but he says she couldn’t come after what he told her.

Matias escorts Adri to the car. Daniel is pouting in the background even though he’s there with someone else. Regina comforts her as they pass by. Regina also tells Renata it was good of her to interrupt her honeymoon to be here for her friend. She’s shocked to hear Jero went to the hacienda, it’s most important that he and Renata be together. Nata attempts to excuse his wretched behavior by saying she’ll go to the hacienda tomorrow. Regina shakes her head.

Nata and Matias bring Adri home. Nata tells her to stay with Matias while she makes something to eat. Adri’s not hungry but Nata says no excuses, she WILL eat. I wish she could take that kind of control with Jerko instead of letting him jerk her around.

Carlos and Jero patrol the vineyard. Carlos tells el Jerko that there was no need to return to La Bonita so quickly, his place is by his wife’s side. He really gets on his case until Jerko tells him to cool it, this is between him and his pareja.

Spare Girl (did Carlos call her Arely?) rides up to congratulate the newlywed. She’s dying to meet his wife. Jero is noncommittal and Arely rides off. Both Carlos and Jero get the QTH looks on their faces.

Nata gets a text from Augie and she loudly texts him back. “How Did You Know I Was Get Ting Married? I Just Got Married Yesterday. Hopefully Someday We Will Run Into Each Other.”

Adri sadly tells Matias she knew mom’s death was coming but she wasn’t prepared to accept it. “Give it time” he tells her, then gives her a rock ‘n roll riff kiss. (Great background music on that one.) Renata catches them as she brings in Adri’s tray. Matias beats a hasty retreat (chicken!!) and Nata asks Adri, “I thought you were just friends but it’s more than that, right?”

Alfonsina reluctantly reports to Augi that Jero returned alone. It was weird but that’s the way it happened. Augi tells her to keep him informed. He thought bubbles “What could have happened?”

Over the full meal including steak that Nata just whipped up, Nata tells Adri she’s happy to hear that Adri and Matias have a relationship. Adri says it’s not really a relationship, they just had a kiss but man oh man she loves him and hopes it progresses. Adri says everything has changed so quickly, what’s she going to do about her house, her papa. Whoa, says Nata, Adri knows who her papa is?

The Man Team of Gonzo and Matias arrive home together. Matias reports he thinks Nata will join Jero tomorrow. Dad still doesn’t like that Jero didn’t stay to pay his respects. Some guy interrupts them with a pack of meds. Fina slithers in and says they are not for her but for Roberta who is pregnant. Caras impactadas de Man Team.

Nata is blown away as Adri explains that the guy who is Nata’s uncle and her boss turned out to be her father. Adri tells her she doesn’t think Constanza is taking the news well. Nata says give it time, as for her she’s happy with the news, she’s glad that Adri will have her father’s protection and she’s sure Matias will give her all the love she needs. Adri looks doubtful. If they only knew the nefarious plots that are brewing right under cute little noses.

Gonzo asks is Fina sure that Rob is pregnant? Meanwhile Matias is sweating bullets and he even asks if Rob is pregnant by him. Fina snips well duh, Rob doesn’t have a boyfriend and the only guy she’s been intimate with is him AS THEY ALL WITNESSED. Matias says that doesn’t mean he’s the father and Fina glares at him, “Are you sure???” and stares him down. Yikes, nightmares tonight for all of us.

Fina tells them the doc says Rob has to be very careful or she might lose the baby and/or her life. More nasty comments about the youth of today not being responsible for their actions. Matias goes to Roberta while gullible Gonzo tells Fina they’ll deal with this together. This gives Fina the opportunity to rub it in that the baby will be Gonzo’s grandkid and thus carries the Monterrubio blood.

When he asks how she is, Rob tells Matias she’s not sure how to deal with this disconcerting news. Matias mans up and tells her that Fina indicated the baby is his. Is it true, is she sure the baby is his? She has a confession, will he promise not to tell anyone? The father of her baby is Jeronimo Linares. They met at the party, he told her he loved her, she fell for him, he invited her to his apartment, got her drunk and took advantage of her. He asks how could this betrayal have happened? She weeps that she just wanted someone to be in love with her just like Renata. Anyway the same thing happened with Matias, didn’t it? He wonders why didn’t she tell anyone? She says she told Renata but she didn’t believe her. She told Jero but he blew her off. She tried to stop the wedding but now she doesn’t know what to do, pregnant by the husband of her sister and all. She’s carrying an angel of a baby inside of her and she’s frightened of the thought of being a single mother and raising her little angel without a father. Matias comforts her a la Gonzo and she smirks a la Fina. Well daisynjay, I think this answers your question about who sticks her ever-growing nose into Matias and Adri’s relationship.

Ah, we’re back in the wine country. Carlos tells Jero that Matilde’s acting a little crabby because she’s in love with Jero. Jero laughs that they don’t even know each other but Carlos reminds him that he better than anyone knows all about love at first sight. Jero has his favorite airport flashback but shakes it off. Carlos says Mati’s been nuts for him ever since Rafa showed her Jero’s picture. Hope dies hard and Mati’s hope has turned to frustration. Jero says he knows how she feels. No you don’t you dumba**. Mati is open and upfront about her feelings. You are a lying wanker. Not to mention you are in a bright white suit roaming around the deep red earth. City boy, bah!

Matias goes to his room, curses Jero, calls himself an imbecile and destroys his room. Gonzo finds him and demands what’s up? What did Roberta say? Is Matias the father? Matias says Rob told him nothing. Gonzo goes, well, gonzo and yells if she said nothing that means the baby is his and Matias had better take responsibility so his own child doesn’t end up uncared-for in everybody’s mouth, i.e. everybody will say Matias won’t take of his own kid.

Jero fondles some baby vines and Carlos tells him he can’t believe his own eyes, Jero is taking care of his brother Rafa’s vines. Jero instructs Carlos to never mention Rafa’s name at the hacienda and tell everyone else to do the same. He doesn’t want Renata to know that Rafa was his brother and he doesn’t want to discuss his decisions with Carlos. What a guy.

Jero changes the subject. He wants to meander through Dr. Nesme’s property and he wants Carlos to teach him everything. It’s his intention to carry on Rafa’s dream to make the vineyards some of the most well-known in the world and to make Mexican wine some of the most highly regarded...thanks to Rafael. Carlos is happy, this is the Jero he knows and loves and agreed to work for.

Fina and Roberta snicker and bond over their successful perfidies. Rob gripes about staying in bed but Fina tells her not to take any risks. Knock on the door, it’s Gonzo, and Fina instructs Rob to start crying. Gonzo enters and Rob weeps she’s sorry, she failed them both, she doesn’t know what she’s going to do. He hugs her and says she and the baby have his full support, by the way, who’s the daddy? Fina snarls isn’t it clear that it’s Matias? Nope, says dad, that’s why he has to ask Roberta. She starts fake-crying to please leave her alone, boo hoo sideways-glance hoo.

Meanwhile over at the vineyards Alfonsina is complaining to the workers that the irrigation is all wrong and they need to fix it. The grapes are very delicate. Doctor Ick shows up foaming at the mouth in lust for her but Alfonsina’s not looking too happy to see him. He pants that she’s driving him crazy and he must make love to her. I practically snorted my dry rose through my nose with that one. She tells him no way, it’s over. He keeps trying to grab her as she moves away and then shhhh! Here come Ezekial! Doc pretends that he’s there giving Alf some vineyard advice, acts completely guilty, then quickly skedaddles. Ezekial asks since when is the doctor an irrigation expert? Yep, he’s suspicious.

Carlos and Jero are surveying Doc Nesme’s land from their awesome porch when Renata calls. She gives him the 411 on Adri and says she can’t wait to see him tomorrow. He rebuffs her, she doesn’t need to come so soon, she’s self-sufficient. She coos that she can’t wait to make love with him and his perfunctory response is “have a good trip, I’ll see you.” Jero tells Carlos to find the doc and tell him to name his price. Get a wife, buy some land, it’s all in a day’s work.

Oblivious Renata continues dreaming about Jero the Zero when Consti joins her at the cafe. Nata tells her that she’s leaving tomorrow, Coni is like her mom and she doesn’t want that to ever change. Nata also wants to talk about the Adri situation, it must be very difficult for Coni to find out Honorio has a daughter. Coni clarifies that Adri is not a daughter to her, she’s a stranger. Nata thinks it will just take time for Coni to come around. Coni hopes she doesn’t sound like a monster but no, she doesn’t think she will.

Over at the stables Honorio has just finished his stress-reducing ride. Gonzo joins him and Honorio still can’t believe he’s got 23 yr old daughter and that she is Adriana. Gonzo says life is full of surprises. Dude you have no idea. Honorio asks what’s up with Gonzo, he seems worried. Gonzo reveals that Rob is preggers.

Regina, Cata and Antonio gossip about Jero not being with Renata at the funeral. Renata doesn’t think it’s right. Cata says Jero’s not Regina’s kid so she should lay off. Tony agrees, he’s not her son or SON-IN-LAW (ahem!!) so she should butt out, let the newlyweds handle it and don’t call Jero.

Auggie reads his text from Renata confirming her marriage. Spare Girl bounces up, kisses him and suggests they do something that afternoon. He snarls “I don’t want to do anything!” and stalks away. She grabs his phone to take a peek and suddenly he snatches it away and glares at her. “Sheesh, I just wanted to make a call,” she says. Why oh why is she still there?

Matias tells his horse about Jero being the father of Rob’s baby.

Adri cries and texts Matias how grateful she is that he’s in her life. He reads it and sighs at the hopelessness of it all.
Lazaro drives Renata to the hacienda and she asks why didn’t Jero come to pick her up? Poor Lazaro, that a hard one to answer. Manuel Carrasco’s sad song Que Nos Está Pasando (What’s Happening to Us?) is playing in the background. He calls her Senora Linares and tells her to come inside but she sits in the car, not recognizing her new name and numb to her surroundings.

Inside, Carlos is shocked that Jero didn’t go to the airport himself. Jero is saved from having to explain himself by Renata who jumps all over him, Hola mi amor!! Carlos welcomes her to La Bonita and she is delighted at the name. For whom was it named? Jero instructs Lazaro to take her suitcases to the guest room. Caras impactadas de Lazaro, Carlos y Renata. “Que? The guestroom?” asks Lazaro. “What? Aren’t we going to sleep together?” demands Renata. Another round of Caras Impactadas.

Avances: Jero silently promises Renata she’ll not be happy there or anywhere else. Renata demands to know what’s going on with him. She sees Augi and gives him a big hug. Uh oh, Jero sees them.

al menos es lo que a mi me enseñaron = at least that’s what I was taught (What Mati says)
autosuficiente = self-sufficient (what Jero says Renata is)
cuarto de invitados = guest room (where Renata is sleeping I guess)
desamaparado/a = uncared-for, helpless, underprivileged (What Rob’s kid might be)
lo abandonó tan rápido? = She abandoned you so quickly? (Matilde to Jeroo)
me traes loco = you’re driving me crazy (Doc Ick to Alfonsina)
pareja = partner, mate (how Jero referred to Renata)
recién casado = newlywed (Jero)
riego = irrigation
tiempo al tiempo = give it time, bit by bit (What Matias said to Adri)

Dicho of the day (For Jero)
No hay que buscarle mangas al chaleco = don’t look for trouble where there is none (lit. Don’t search the vest for sleeves)

Comments:
In response to Jules' comment from yesterday, I think Jero's head is so far up his arse he's about to choke on it. And I wish he would!

Great recap, Sylvia. I think that Jerry may be the worst galan we've ever had. Others have been annoying or boring, but this guy is downright malignant.

To make things worse, Renata is one of the most appealing sweeties that we've had.

I hate to admit it, but I interpreted Matilde a bit differently.

"¿Lo abandonó tan rápido?"

Since she used the masculine lo as the object, I heard it to mean:

"She abandoned you (lo) so quickly?"

She did say that one way or the other, they should be by each other's side.

I'm betting (hoping?) that when she sees how Jerry is acting she will take her side.

Mr. I? Tonight Jerry captures the gold, silver, and bronze. So deception is the one thing he can't abide?

Sorry Chema, but when you have to announce that you're a man...

I'm not sure where Roberta is going with this, but I like it so far.

A Mr. I nod to Gonzo for jumping all over Matias without knowing the facts.

Carlos

Oh this was painful to watch. The man is c-o-l-d.
Very appropriate title.

Glad I'm going camping with my grandkids -- and their parents -- tomorrow. I hope it keeps my mind off this mess. How many TN couples have two theme songs -- one for love and one for cold revenge?

Carlos, thanks a mil for the correction on Mati's statement. You are absolutely correct. For a second I asked myself "lo?" but then just powered on through. I appreciate the proofread.

I was just thinking tonight that Juan Soler should fire his agent. I can't imagine this role is going to increase his popularity any. Malignant is a perfect word for his character. My thoughts were more along the lines of expletive deleted.

Güera, interesting observation about the theme songs. I don't think it's a good sign that our couple has their own for cold revenge.

I'm inclined to agree with Audrey, the writers are blowing it. Will they be able to redeem the story?

Sylvia, you couldn't be more right about el Jerko. His head is so far up his own orifice that he's wearing it like a hat these days.

Throwing out the lovely embroidered sheets and shuttling Renata into the guest bedroom is the breaking point for me. According to the avances, Jero's vicious streak has just begun but I'm already done with him. Even if he kisses Renata's feet for 100 capitulos, I don't think he'll ever win me over again. What I'm most afraid of is that this "revenge" might cross over into "emotional abuse". I cannot abide by that at all. Fina does enough of it already.

Moving on to things that don't make me near as livid, I liked the scenes between Nata and Adri. They have a more sisterly bond than Nata and Robi ever will. I'm glad Renata gave Coni a little nudge about getting to know Adri. Coni isn't a monster, she's just hurt and confused. I trust she'll come around in time. Hopefully before Chema trips over his own tongue.

Robi played Matias like a sucker, didn't she? She spun that "poor me, Jero/Nata both blew me off when I told them about the baby" story to win Mat's sympathy. I bet a forced marriage is in their future, despite the baby supposedly being Jero's. It's all so depressing.

Amy

Awesome title, Sylvia! Great recap, too. I thoroughly enjoyed your rants at Jerko (good one!).

Carlos is doing a great job so far playing The Voice of Reason (although Jerko is deaf to reason), so I'm hoping he'll take pity on Renata and tell her why Jero's being such a [long string of non-family-friendly profanities and vulgarities].

Could Doc Dipwad possibly have acted any more guilty when Ezekiel showed up? Why did Alfonsina lie that they were talking about irrigation? She should have said Doc was talking about fertilizer; that would have been true.

Don't fall for it, Matias! Not your problem! Stick with Adriana!

You are so fabulous Cap'n! I love the title and your ability to make high humor out of a depressing episode, kind of making a silk purse out of a sow's ear. It seems that everyone nice in this story had something undeservedly nasty happen to them all in this episode.

Jero, you are so dead to me too. Carlos (ours not theirs) called it well, Jero is the worst galan with fewer redeeming qualities than I have ever seen in a telenovela. I can't imagine what he can do to regain my good favor or even a shred of respect. I do hope one of the vines trips him and he gets sent off with multiple fractures to his legs an skull. I don't want to see anymore of his abuse.

Poor Matias, caught between the devil and the deep blue sea. He has come so close to bliss now a second time. I had hopes that he would confide in his papa but unless that horse is Mr. Ed, I don't think we are going to see the truth arise from this horse pile that Fina and Roberta are pitching at everyone.

By the way, I am leaving town for a week and a half starting Monday. If someone would like to try recapping, please let me know. If not, I will post and tag a conversation spot. I'm off to take pictures in northern NM and southern Colo. Any response can be posted here or to cherylnewmex@gmail.com THANKS.

Yep, Sylvia, I guess I got my answer. I guess we just knew there was no way that Adri and Matias could be happy for more than a couple episodes this early. Your recap rocked, and the snarky comments made remembering the disgusting events better.

I agree on Jeers-why don't we just give him the permanent award for Mr. I and everyone else can go for runner up. There is NOTHING about what's he's doing that makes sense. You want revenge, there were other ways to do it. And the fool doesn't realize that in the process of treating Nata like garbage, he is losing the respect of all his employees and friends? I can't find the words to describe what a stupid idea this is...

So I may ignore the Jeers only scenes for quite some time, I love watching Silvia too much to give up totally, and the side plots are interesting...so I'm sticking with this. But I agree with you Sylvia - Juan will not be joining the ranks of Colunga or Ecker as galans for the year.

Still wish Mati would tone it down a bit, but the fact that Carlos told him about Mari - will that give him an idea to start flirting with her? OMG, our Carlos will be putting his fist through the TV if that happens!

I'm trying to understand Coni's hurt, but Adri is a dear girl, and Hon was honest with her...I wish she wasn't so adamant that she would not be able to get close to nthe girl. But then we wouldn't have her getting involved with Chema. Poor sap, he has it so bad. Was waiting for Selene to come bopping up last night. That would have made the night oh so perfect. (NOT)

Suck it up and watch tonight again - want to see Jeers reaction to Nata and Augie.

Sylvia: A delight from start to finish. I devoured every word - this was an amazing summary of all of the "perfidies". Outstanding vocabulary and dicho.

Your humor was spot on: "Get a wife, buy some land, it’s all in a day’s work was great but "Rob set her big old chops in a nasty scowl" had me laughing out loud. Pure pleasure...

Carlos, I totally agree with Sylvia and Cheryl on your (always) astute observation that Jero is "malignant" and THE worst galan. Ever. Blech.

Happy trails Cheryl and to everyone, happy Friday!

Diana

Speaking of Mati, I thought she was adorable in that pout when she kept putting her feet up on the table (quite a no no in Mexico I was told) and her godmother kept putting them down while trying to put some sense into her head. The godmother may turn out to be another source of reason and maybe an ally for Renata.
What a horrible thought you had Daisynjay. That would be terrible if Jero plays Mathilde in order to torture Renata.

Sylvia...terrific title and wonderful vocabulary and dichos. Took a little of the sting away from last night's horrors but oh my, what a painful episode!

Seeing poor Renata befuddled when Jero didn't pick her up at the airport, and then the awful slap in the face when he told Lazaro to pur her things in the guest bedroom!!!!! incredible hurt and public humiliation in front of strangers. There she is,in a strange, faraway place, without a single friend, and a sudden sociopath for a husband. No wonder she hugs Auggie. Right now, he's looking good. At least he flat out wants her without any psychotic waffling. What a horror of a story. If it weren't for Silvia Navarro and my dear blog pals, I'd bail right now.

I've been wondering why I haven't really bonded with this series and last night's episode might make me bail. Jeronimo is a total jerk and Juan Soler was never my favorite actor. Considering that he isn't aging that well I think he should turn completely to the dark side in his next series and start playing controlling fathers.

The bit with the sheets and the guest room was really horrible.

Wonderful recap Sylvia. I'm in awe that you found so much of the hidden humor in this.

Well, this is a first for me (although I hated Colugna in Esmeralda). A galan who feels more like a villain. Carlos, you described the usual "bad" galan well-- annoying or boring. I would add dumb and immature to the list. But Jero is a mature man, who supposedly also has a brain. He is using this brain to plan how to torture our extremely lovable heroine. Yes, this is what make it so difficult, because the character of Nata is so appealing and has already suffered so much emotional abuse from a person who is supposed to love her-- her mother. And now she has fallen into an emotionally abusive marriage, for which she confronted everything and everyone to make happen.

As this genre is mostly for women, galans usually get more of a pass (we need fantasy worthy material) than the heroines, who are usually the ones to fall into villain/shrewish behavior until she gets hit with enough anvils to strainghten up. It will be interesting to see how the writers build up Jero's galan status by the end.

The Ice Man Came indeed! Boy, the writers have really pithed me off!

I'm copying over a bit from yesterday because I posted so late. This is the part of #40 that I was referring to, Carlos:

Jero wakes up in the middle of the wedding night and looks at Renata next to him sound asleep and says this to himself:

"Por qué me deje ir?"(Why did I let myself go?) I am an idiot. I am your slave when you kiss me, cuando me enamoras (when you make me fall in love with you) y no puedo, no puedo permitirlo (and I can't, I can't allow it).

That, in a nutshell, is the writers' explanation for Jero's permanent morph into Mr Hyde? He just couldn't handle the emotional intensity of their wedding night?

In #41, after seeing Jero not meet Renata at the airport, and not even greet her at the Hacienda door, I snidely remarked to my husband - next he's going to announce separate rooms. But I was joking! So count me as totally impactada when Jero told Laz to put Renata's stuff in the guest bedroom. What?!?

Ridiculous!

Audrey

Cheryl, I can sub for next Monday 6/20. The following Monday, I'm not so sure as we are readying the RV for an extended trip.

I'll probably be spitting nails by then, but I can at least do one sub before hitting the road. The crazy thing is, when we return in October, this TN will still have 3 months to go! I wonder how many of you will still be sane. LOL!

Audrey

Thanks, Audrey. I think we can safely say that this man is sick. I suspected as much from the very first. The way he reacted to to finding out that Lorea had an IUD was cruel and dare I say... inappropriate?

They were not married and he felt deceived because she was using contraception? ¡Por favor! He showed almost no concern for her pain at that moment as well. If he was wanting to break up with her, why not be honest about it and maybe show a little compassion and sensitivity... at least till she's out of the hospital?

He's obsessed with truth and honesty and yet he's rivaling Fina with his deceitfulness. I'm surprised that she doesn't feel a natural attraction to him, they're so much alike.

Even with his apparent ruthlessness, Augie is a much more appealing character at the moment.

Carlos

Sylvia. Thank you! I'm going to save the cap and comments for a lunchtime treat. Once again venting: Poor Renata and Regina: all this suffering orchestrated by that vile and miserable Fina and her spawn Roberta. So they're going to play both sides of the lie: have Matt thinking it's A$$hole's baby and Gonzo thinking it's Matt's, so they got them coming and going. It seems Roberta wants the lie that it's AH's to stay secret to thus stew and torment Matt? I can't imagine that lie will never see the light of day! Gonzo, Matt and Honor need to take a little retreat from hellhouse and think a few things through, especially Gonzo who's been at Fina's venomous breast all these years.

And poor Renata. I was actually glad to see her jump into Auggie's arms at the end of the show. They were truly glad to see one another. I think Renata could neutralize the rancor in him and turn him into a decent man. She so needs some comfort right now. I can't see her putting up with too much b.s. from AH, though. Her character would be to confront his hostility and then leave him to stew in his rancid juices if the answer was illogical.

It would be cool if the writers did something really different and let Renata redeem and marry Auggie while AH ends up in hellhouse with Roberta, leaving Andri and Matt to share sweet kisses and vida para siempre. . .

Khalilah

Awesome recap!

"Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde is the original title of a novella written by the Scottish author Robert Louis Stevenson that was first published in 1886", per Wikipedia.

Jero is Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. But I wonder if he was this way before he met Renata.

Renata, with her family of crazies, has rowed these waters before. So, I think the one we need to fell sorry for is going to be Jero when he gets jealous of Renata turning to Auggie cause Jero is an idiot with this revenge without the facts thingy.

Roberta. What a whopper she told.

A in Baraboo

Thank you for the wonderful recap. It was very helpful. I missed a few episodes of this because frankly my plate is full of TNs! LOL. But I want to keep up on what's going on.

Jero is the COLDEST FISH EVER!!! No wonder Renata greets Augie so enthusiastically in the avances. I wonder how that is going to play out. (I know he's bad, but I have a soft spot for Augie.)

Tomorrow should be interesting!

Sylvia...I forgot to say also thanks for the music mentions...Mathias and Adriana have a fun kissing canción and the Manuel Carrasco Qué nos está pasando? is worth another listen. Mucha gracias my music-loving amiga.

K - from your pen to the writer's hands. Or at the least, they are going to make Jeers go thru some major hell before he really wins the heart of our fair Nata. THAT I would enjoy to watch...no easy sailing for this dude.

Thanks for adding good humor to such a depressing episode, Sylvia...
regarding Jero the cold a___... I have to give it to Guy Ecker for making his Deme much more believable in this stage of the story... We saw how cold and cruel Deme was with Vero, but you could see from his face that he had both the good Deme and the dark side Deme fighting constantly inside him. IT showed... so we felt a little sorry for him from the get go, as wrong as he was in assuming who was the one guilty of his brother's demise.
Besides, in the 98 version it was more obvious that his brother had committed suicide, here they aer assuming he did... but noone was there when the shot was fired... it could have been Augie for all they know.

I agree with Carlos about Mati saying that (Renata) abandoned Jero...
Love Mati and Lazaro's godmother already... she will definitely be a great one for Renata to find some comfort in, if she stays. As good candidate for that Carlos is, he would definitely not be totally open to her because of his closeness to Jero, but she would be a more neutral person there.

Audrey, Thank you so much for the offer to cover next Monday. I can take off earlier in the day to head to Abiquiu (Georgia O'Keefe's favorite haunts).

Lovely recap Sylvia, thanks! The usual great snark. Lying wanker - ROTF!

And I always enjoy the vocal plus. That was an especially nice dicho. I hadn't seen it before.

Audrey

No prob Cheryl! Going to Abiquiu? I drove by there once and had to look it up because the name was so unusual.

I do need someone to email the recap to.

Thanks!

Audrey

In spite of my disgust with Jero, I keep thinking the writers are using a rather clever ploy. It's that of dropping clues that are so dead on for the audience but the characters somehow brush past and miss the moment of truth. I'm thinking about the R necklace, the Roberta + Rafa carved in the tree, the handwriting on the letters to Regina, and why isn't anyone trying to get fingerprints off those pictures. It does keep us talking to the screen since we know more than the hapless characters.

I also hope that some of the characters that have been problematic like Mati being so silly and I know she is Carlos' favorite so maybe she will use that spunk and energy to demand justice for Renata. Poor Adriana is going to need help when Matias gets yanked away from her and Constanza makes Honorio miserable about her existence. Perhaps Regina can help her. See, I am trying to alleviate all the suffering here. Thankfully we have each other to break the pain with big humor painted across the screen.

Great stuff to chew on. Sylvia the recap was great. All the comments reflect my own views, including my vote for Mr. I. Jerko--perfect new name, but Ice Man, despite the winning smile, is also perfect--gets to retire the trophy, and so early in the novela.

It might be fun to play:
"Guess who will be first to tell Renata that Rafa was Jero's brother"--intentionally or not.

Does any one want to start a pool? To make it harder, we ought to guess which episode (within a range of 10 episodes--that's two weeks).

Who Knows Jerko and Rafa were brothers:
1. Jero
2. Carlos
3. Loreley (who probably doesn't count for much)
4. Regina (and by default Cata)
5. Matilde (and by default Madrina)
6. Auggie (because of the land deals and by default maybe Spare Girl-Arely, assuming they have some conversation between liplocks)
7. Dr. DoNothing Nesme (also because of the land deals and maybe by default Karin, assuming they have some conversation when the good Dr. isn't fantasizing about Alfonsina)
8. Alfonsina (and by default maybe Ezekiel)
9. Lazaro (and most others in the servidumbre that worked under Rafael and with whom Matilde has discussed el hermoso with)
10. Matias? (He knew Jero from Spain, was Jero's BFF)
11. Fina
12. Now Roberta knows
13. Almudena, Jero's financial manager in Spain
14. Anyone to add to the list???

Ok, we're at #41. We have to see Ice Man conflicted for another 70+ episodes before conflict resolution starts.

We can always change our minds as the tn moves along, but right now I suspect it's going to be:

Auggie or Arely in episode #51.

Since he isn't on speaking terms with Jero. If he does it soon, it sets up all sorts of ramifications for Renata. The way Ice Man is behaving right now, it won't be catastrophic if someone spills the beans--he's likely to say, so what, you gonna divorce me for that?
NOK

Amy, "wearing it like a hat"; hee, good one!

Julia, you are so right that Alfonsina should have said Doc Dip was talking about fertilizer. He's such a complete loser on every level. I don't understand how 1) Kari fell for him and married him, and 2) the incredibly hot Alfonsina is interested in him at all. Who knew this show would end up being a mystery?

Funny, my word verification is "unblest", pretty much the state of all of the characters in this show.

Cheryl, I think Jero is dead to all of us. I can't remember any supposed galan who has engendered as much rancor amongst us as this guy has. I do believe that for once we are all in agreement. Amazing! You have a fantastic time and I will happily post a header if someone cannot sub for you.

Audrey, you are a dear for subbing for Cheryl next Monday. Send me your recap and I will post for you: sseaberg@gmail.com.

Daisy, I think you nailed the exact traits of Jero that I find so annoying, he is mean and stupid. It's that stupid part that is the worst. He's not even clever a la Fina. I don't know what Renata sees in him and I suspect Matilde will soon sour on him as well. I think Matilde and Renata would make a great team, I hope they end up on the same side.

Diana, your comments are the sweetest as always. I would like to say "Happy Trails" to our alleged galan but I feat he will stick around for the long haul. And it will indeed be long. If Jero tries to play Mati against Renata I hope Mati calls bulls**t on him. I think she would.

JudyB, is this the worst telenovela so far? The only one I can think of that was ickier was Barrera de Amor. I believe all the bloggers bailed on that one. At least CME has much better acting but I wish I could say the same for the writing. ITA that Silvia Navarro is the big draw here. She is awesome at looking 100% demolished but with the ability to pick herself up and move on.

They must have something good coming up for Renata (other than Augustin). Please? What she should say to her "husband" is "Look, I was a vice-presidente of a company. Ok, it was my father's, but I'm sure if I put on something appropriate for a change, I could go get another job. So straighten up or I'm outta here and this novela is over!" But she won't.

It's a shame because she played a much stronger woman in MEPS and that was nice to see for a change. Pretty sure all Mexican women aren't doormats like they are in telenovelandia. (Hope the writers are reading this).

Urban A, I actually think that Soler is a rather handsome chap but I'm not sure he's becoming a more proficient actor with time. I've only seen him in La Fea and this one and he seems terribly unsympathetic in both. Is it him or how the parts are written? I don't know. What I do know is that I am definitely not bonding with him as I have with other galans.

Vivi, with the above in mind I am very curious if the writers will be adept enough to salvage Jero as a hero. So far he is a zero. Audrey's quote from Wednesday's episode is obviously key to his stupid behavior but only he seems to think it makes sense. His best pals (Carlos and Regina) are definitely NOT on board with him. If he respects their opinions then why doesn't he take their advice? His imperious "don't argue with me" attitude is ridiculous to use Audrey's very appropriate description.

Carlos, ITA that at this point even the allegedly ruthless Augustin is more attractive. At the very least he seems more fun. I ask myself, with whom would I rather share a bottle of good, red wine, Jero or Augie? I think we all know my answer to that one. Well, actually it would be Carlos2 if he were one of the choices. So far he is my favorite guy character in this one.

Elvira, I'm glad you have a soft spot for Augie. Except for his wretched treatment of Spare Girl he really hasn't done anything wrong. I don't count his blackmailing of Doctor Dud for obvious reasons.

Khalilah, I love your ending!! It's pure brilliance! Oh how I wish the writers would do something clever like that.

A in B, "Jero is an idiot with this revenge without the facts thingy." Well said. I for one cannot wait to see his head explode when he sees Renata hugging Augie. I think Augustin will play this one much cooler than Jero but we'll see.

SilviShark, loved it especially the observation about love and hate music themes for a single character! That love theme for Reggie and sophomoron gonzo tells me its time for a pit stop. Antonio for dream man! YAH!
I know that Renata is a 'damaged child' programmed to accept abuse and beg for love BUT! She survived that, learning not to hate and to respect her own wishes. So I'm expecting her to try, then cry, and then get out and get on.
If the writers keep her down on the farm with superfluous sex and tears then I will have to cue the kayak.

I think Nata may surprise all of his, and Jeers, in how she starts to handle things. And that may be where the fun comes in...who knows we may actually start enjoying some of the men in this TN get put in their place, along with the likes of Fina.
I hold a little hope for Roberta that she'll have a defining moment and head to the good side.
And we are sure to get some new characters somewhere - always do in a TN this long. I don't think this is the worst I ever watched, TDA ranks higher up there, but I think we're all just stunned how unattractive a character they have made the lead galan.

Thank you for the recap. You wonderful recappers and commentors are the reason i'm sticking with this TN. Jerkonimo is unberable. I too am curious how they'll redeem his character.

Judy, I always think of you when I'm trying to find out info on the background music. We have discovered some good artists through these shows which is a bonus. I will take any positive tidbit I can get with this one, LOL!

Kelly, interesting thought; I wonder if there will be another romantic diversion for Renata? She doesn't seem the type to stray however. You're right, what is it about the writing in these shows that allows super strong women to become doormats? However, this can certainly happen in real life too. A strong business sense does not necessarily translate to good taste in love.

Marta, I absolutely love the character of Manuela and we have only seen about 2 minutes of her. More please!!

NOK, that is a GREAT list that you put together. I think it will be either Matilde or Augustin who spills the beans about Rafa. Mati because if she is told not to blab then she most certainly will and Augie just because it's the sort of info that would come out in normal conversation. I don't see how Jero can hide that sort of info and he is stupid to even ask it of Carlos. I'm guessing the truth will come out by the end of next week.

Cheryl, have a fantastic time in Abiquiu. I've only been there once but I recall it is a beautiful place, just perfect for a photographer. I like your comments about how the writers might be playing us. If we end up feeling sympathy towards Jero then they will have done a brilliant job. In the meantime ITA that at least we have each other and our humor to carry us through.

Great comments everyone. At the very least our wretched "galán" has provoked some good conversation.

Daisy, I do hope that Renata will start fighting back as it will add depth and dimension to this one. She and some of the other female characters seem smart and clever enough to take on our Misters Inappropriate.

"Jerkonimo"...LOL!!

I make a distinction between bad novelas, and bad/poorly written characters. However, most bad tns have poorly written characters, as well as inconsistent plots, lack of continuity, over the top situations, bad acting, etc.

I consider this a good tn so far (good acting, good pace, great heroine), with a bad/poorly written galan (or premise for a galan).

I don't know how Jeronimo will ever be able to redeem himself but, as per telenovela rules, he and Renanta have to stay married (what a thought) unless he dies. Ya think?

Brisa

I guess I'm in the minority here but I'm loving this TN. I think this is my fifth TN and so far it's my favorite.

~Caborita

Caborita- I like this tn too! See my comment above. Like the tn, love the heroine, like the other characters, hate the villainess (as I should), but hate the galan (so far).

Hey everyone, tomorrow I'm spending the day with our favorite Mexican guest commenter, Jarocha! I'm giving her the grand tour of DC's neighborhoods, monuments, and nightlife. She sends her love to you all. She's wrapping up the first week of her two week DC grad school program with an exam today.

Spec-tacular Sylvia! My, you certainly did make an infuriating episode fairly sparkle. Urban Anthro, I hear ya bro. What in the world is supposed to attract us to this? Now Adri and Matt probably won't even be an item? I hope Nata has an affair with Auggie and Bobbie dies in childbirth!

You see what unsavory emotions a novela like this can awaken!! First enjoying people being bitch-slapped and now wishing for childbirth maternal deaths! Ayyy for a novela that makes me sigh at hot love scenes or even unrequited but pure amor. . .chisled bodies of gallant galans! It ain't here!

Khalilah (word verification "nothes")

Bonney Churros, you make an interesting point about Renata being programmed to accept abuse. I am not a psychologist but I do know that sometimes people are in patterns that they choose to repeat. Maybe Jero is one of those patterns for her? Just wondering out loud here. If there is some really clever plot development perhaps both characters, Jero and Renata, can grow out of the patterns they have created for themselves.

Jero's pattern is that he is very judgmental and he jumps to conclusions. Perhaps somewhere down the line when he sees what this is doing to Renata he will realize that this is very destructive behavior. Just like the classic hero, Jero's own weaknesses are what could cause his eventual downfall unless he somehow redeems himself. So Brisa, yes I think Jero and Renata will end up together and hopefully they will both be smarter and wiser and happier.

Vivi and Caborita, good for you for defending this telenovela!! I'm glad you are enjoying it. Vivi, as usual you make some very thoughtful points about what constitutes a "good" telenovela, thank you for that.

Unlike some shows I am quite enjoying the side plots of this one. I really do care what happens to Lazaro and Kari, I want Matilde to be happy in love, I want Matias and Adri to end up together, and I truly want Roberta to be redeemed.

Vivi, you are going to be Jarocha's tour guide? What fun!!! I'm sure she'll have a smashing time in DC, such a fascinating city, especially with you to show her around.

Khalilah, I am watching CME alongside Alborada and Teresa so yep, there is an absence of chiseled bods in this one. Throw us a bone writers! So far all we've gotten to see is Matias in jodhpurs and it ain't enough.

Roberta's baby: I want it to be born and eventually be recognized as Rafa's offspring. I'm still a bit pithed off that Rafa died early on, he was such an earnest and ardent cutie. If Roberta ever finds out that Fina murdered the love of her life she will go ballistic. I REALLY want to see this happen; I know it will be worth the wait.

Thanks for the recap Silvia.

Once again, if human beings EVER communicated anything clearly in telenovelas, there would be no telenovelas. How many episodes must we endure before Jero "El Jerk", opens his mouth and tells Renata what's going on in his head. Viewerville and Renata can only scream: WTF?

Caborita, Vivi et. al., I am enjoying this TN too. Kind of enjoying the misery at times but the very non-boring fact of having a galan who is sooooooo inappropriate by his stubborn resistance to facts that fairly smack him upside the head. I like that wonderful characters like Carlos and Regina really like him. Even Matias has begrudgingly supported that he is a good person so I hope the redemption starts soon. One of the clues needs to be reconsidered to add an edge of doubt in his armor of revenge and anger.

Hey, Vivi, give Jarocha a big hug from me. We almost met last winter when I stayed in Oaxaca but I was pretty involved in things there then she left Vera Cruz for D.F. to begin her graduate work so when I came north, I ended up driving around D.F. on Arco del norte to make good time ending in Queretero for the first night. She is so spectacular as are you so I will enjoy picturing you two enjoying one of my favorite cities. I know you will have great fun.

I really don't think Renata will take the abuse from Jero for too long. She is actually a tn character who communicates. She asks questions and she stands up for herself. Just as many times as we've seen her ask for Fina's acceptance and blessing (she thinks she's her mother afterall), we've also seen her tell Fina off and stand up for herself. She's asked Jero lots of questions about himself, which he has deflected or lied about, and she is definitely questioning why he didn't come to the wake, didn't pick her up, and is now banishing her to the guest room. I do NOT think our heroine will be accepting that for too long.

Re: lack of chiseled bods, we got a brief glimpse of Carlos2 but he was beaten and bandaged. Why is Spare Girl the only one who goes swimming? All these houses have pools! Maybe she can convert Carlos2 to her water-loving ways.

Matilde is so funny. She wants someone to live happily ever after with, but laments the selection amongst the local yokels. How has she not noticed Carlos?! He's right there in front of her all the time! Wake up, sweetie.

The other potential for an abfab scene is Chema, and I fear we'll get that only if/when Constanza goes down a dark road. Though, personally, I feel this actor's musculature is overdeveloped. His eyes, however...dreamy.

Yes, Julia, Chema has dreamy eyes but for me he's like the son she never had. . .I feel NO carnal chemistry between them whatsoever and I hope the writers don't take it there: like somebody said, ". .when you have to declare that you're a man. . ."

Khalilah

Khalilah, I hope you are right.

One of the reasons I am so upset is that until this week, I really loved this novela. I thought sets were great, I thought the casting was well done. Love Navarro and I think Soler looks nice older. The characters seemed very natural and believable - even our Villains. It seems to avoid so many TN cliches. This seemed so much more real life than most TNs I had seen. And I absolutely adored the vineyard in Baja California as a setting and so looked forward to much more time spent there.

Now - Bleeech!

Up until now I was willing to give Jero some slack. I didn't blame his girlfriend incident in Spain. She had promised him they were working on having a child immediately (even though not yet married) so I could understand his feeling betrayed. And, sure, he has a character flaw of jumping to conclusions and being a bit paranoid. But until now, those were not unsurmountable problems. This weird wedding night switch - no comprendo - it totally does not follow what has been constructed up to this point. So I am disgusted with the writers.

And he concluded that he needed to keep himself emotionally distant from Renata. When did that morph into humiliating Renata in public - what?!?

If the writers have Renata overcome adversity as a strong woman instead of becoming a repeat victim of emotional abuse, well they might win back my respect. I'm so afraid it's going to be otherwise.

Yeah - you know what! I'll just start rooting for Agustín. I hope he makes Jero's life hell.

(Well, Jero is already making his own life hell - idiot!)

Well, at least Alborada is keeping me happy.

Audrey

P.S. I saw bits of "La Otra" and Soler was a sympathetic galan there. He had a very cute boyish appearance in that one.

Wow...lots of comments. Jeronimo's boorish behavior has stirred up a hornet's nest. From the intensity of the reactions, I would have to say the writers are doing a great job....they've got us so angry we'll be hanging on till the bitter end to see all these Wrongs righted.

Vivi...how wonderful that you can be Jarocha's tour guide. Along with everyone else, I send "un abrazo y mucho besos" for all the help she has given us over the past few years with cultural information, grammar corrections and translations of obscure DF slang. She's a treasure...and so are you. How fitting that you would meet.

No kidding, hornet's nest is right. What fun!!

The comments are great and thanks y'all for helping me readjust my attitude. I now have some hope for this one, especially for Renata being able to stick up for herself. I'm sure she'll really let Jero have it before too long. If the writers have us this riled up maybe they will be clever enough to work things out in some creative ways.

It's been years since I have seen La Mentira the predecessor to this, so if anyone remembers, was Guy Ecker's character as nasty? Cause I remember in the end he was wonderful. I personally like him better than Juan anyway, but somehow Juan seems nastier by far.

Sylvia your awesome!! Gonzo was Mr.I for this episode and how can Matias take the fall if it's not his kid? Confused!!

Jules, that's a good question. Hopefully Marta will see and answer it for us. However in one of her comments above she mentions that Guy Ecker was more believable in his role which leads me to believe he was somehow more sympathetic. I'm just guessing though.

By the way, in reference to some of the other comments, Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde is one of my favorite stories. I have always been fascinated by the theme of the human condition embodying both good and bad.

Wow! a zillion comments. Thanks, Sylvia - your recap was killer. Mike and I are more or less enjoying this tn. Hate Jerko, enjoying hating Jerko...
Vivi and Jarocha, have a wonderful time. One day we hope to meet you, Vivi - we only live about 3 hours away and come to DC every couple of months or so to see our son and DIL.

Emilia, I'm glad you and Mike are hanging in there with us and actually like it. I like your philosophy amiga, you enjoy hating Jerko. With that point of view I think we will all get a lot of enjoyment tonight.

Jules,
That is what I meant. Guy E. has more facial expression acting chops than JS here, so you could see a smidge of regret/pain in his face even when he was even nastier to Vero than Jerko is here. Besides, the hacienda in La Mentira 98 was a much more primitive/rustic place than Jerko has brought Nata to, and there was no Carlos... the actress playing Mati's counterpart was not quite as likeable, and the Lazaro counterpart was not anywhere near as involved as here... so Veronica had fewer 'friends' to make around her than here and her 'calvary' was more lonely...
