CME Discussion #29 Tuesday 5/31/11 Was Yesterday Tuesday??? OOOOPS

While Jules is preparing our recap let me revisit the jocoque story. As Audrey correctly pointed out, it is a cultured (fermented) milk product similar (which I had mentioned earlier) to sour cream.

It was not la piel de jocoque that she was referring to but rather el pie de jocoque. El pie de jocoque is a bit of the leftover jocoque which is used as a source of culture (yeast and bacteria) used to start a new batch.Sort of like they do with sourdough.
 

Gracias, Carlos. That makes perfect sense. Agathe is telling Renata to be careful not to give all of herself away to another but to always retain enough of herself as to be able to recognize and maintain the person that she is inside.

Jules, you are too funny. I was mixed up every day this weekend too.

Carlos, that jocoque reference was driving me crazy. I also thought Agatha was saying say PIE de jocoque. But foot still didn't make any more sense than skin. Your translation now makes perfect sense regarding Adriana's explanation about reserving a bit of the jocoque. However, while looking for any kind of jocoque dicho or refrane I did manage to find a whole slew of new dichos which I will share when I do my recap. Hooray, dicho of the day will rise again! JudyB will love them.

That explains it perfectly. Thanks Carlos. The shameful part is that I have made my own yogurt, creme fraiche and other types of cultured products. Why didn't I get it? Especially with Adriana explaining that you have to have a bit left over for each little cup. Gah! Even though my Spanish is a lot better than a couple of years ago there is still a long way to go. What we call the starter they call the foot.
 

Wow, Carlos, I hope this valuable info and the extra comments make it to a vocabuliary list. What a wonderful revelation which I did not have time to research either. Now it makes so much sense. It also reminds me of people warning us not to eat our seed corn. A reserve of the seminal or potent ingredient must be held back to keep the culture alive. Wonderful imagery and a profound lesson to think on.
