La Pola - July 13, 2011 - Discussion Page
Readers: Here is the first discussion page for this novela. Events are not necessarily in chronological order. Please post your comments below.
Briefly, Alejo and Pola have a long discussion about their relationship and about their future. They both admit they love each other. She sees the situation as nearly impossible, but, he is ready to do anything to be with her. We find out that he can't even make up his own mind about who he will marry until he is 25.
Cata fills Pola in on the fine points of good sex, and Pola figures out that Cata has had a relationship with Juliano the slave.
Domingo is at his wit's end (if he has one) in his marriage with Cata. He visits the mayor and appears to be on the point of talking to the mayor about it.
Sámano's plans to escape in Guaduas are foiled by his (and Leandro's) incarceration for the night. But, he urges Leandro to get help from Alejo.
Francisco becomes undone when a letter arrives from Leandro - to María Teresa - which he reads before she does. At that moment Leandro was in jail, so, Francisco decides to go free him.
Magda pays a visit to Torres and company. She lays the cards out on the table - that they will not permit Antonio to be freed because they are afraid of him. They make up a story about sending Antonio to the U.S. as ambassador. Finally, Jorge caves and says that he will support her request.

I loved the scene between Catarina and Pola, its innocence and humor, but also the sense of tragedy looming in the background -- there's a good chance that Juliano will pay for Catarina's naivete with his life.
Finally, Alejo and Pola get to spend a few moments together. The actors are so lovely and bring the elegant, subtle lines to life. (Have I mentioned how much I love this show?)
So Francisco, arguably the most vile person in the story so far, Alejo's and Leandro's father, is part of the royal line that leads back to God himself. You know, that should be enough to get the sons doubting the theory that the king rules by divine right...
I'm actually beginning to look forward to the scenes with Francisco though my heart aches for poor María Teresa. He is so despicable that he's funny. That piano will be his undoing.
Sounds like Cata's frolic with Juliano, while sinful and especially taboo, actually worked pretty much as it should have. Pola was intrigued.
I've been reading about some of he characters in this. Many were actual historical figures... inclding Alejo, Sámano, and Domingo. Fascinating.

I had no idea that "Don" stood for "de origen noble". I love learning things from novelas - it justifies my guilty pleasure.
Pasofino - muchisimas gracias como siempre.
NovelaMaven - whenever they have the Alejo/Pola scenes, I am just transfixed. your ' ... subtle lines to life' comment is so spot-on.
Wow! and I too learned something new re DON. how cool is that?
