La Pola-September 7, 2011 - Discussion Page

Iglesias convinces Sámano that Alejo deliberately diverted the royalist troops and allowed the patriots to escape. Sámano has Alejo put in jail.

A disguised Pola visits Alejo. They haven’t seen each other in two years. It is a meeting of disbelief and misunderstanding. Pola’s refusal to kiss him through the bars of the cell sends Alejo into a state of paranoia. He thinks she has been unfaithful and so he rejects her.

In honor of the birthday of King Fernando VII, Morillo releases all prisoners who will pledge their loyalty to the king. Alejo is released. Pola waits in the shadows, but Don Gaspar, Eusebia and María Ignacia greet him and invite him to stay with them. The inevitable happens. A distraught Alejo steals a kiss from María Ignacia and ends up proposing marriage to her. She quickly accepts.

Francisco appears at the home of María Teresa’s brothers. He remains true to character – an egotistical, superior cad critical of native-born Americans. The ties that bind them are broken forever. He is turned out into the night alone.

In this chapter we also learn that Sámano will be the next representative of the king. Morillo let him bow and scrape and humiliate himself. Sámano has assured Morillo that he knows how to tame this wild beast of America and impose the will of the king upon the land and its people.

Pola caresses the golden medal. It may be all she has left of a battle-fatigued Alejo.

This episode really hurt. Our lovers are indeed star-crossed. How will we be able to put up with Alejo with María Ignacia.

After two years they still love each other, but seem to have found in themselves another person, and that is terrifying.

The two generals are like black and white. Morillo is all business and strategy. He is going after Simón Bolivar. Sámano is all greed and ambition. He wants the crown. He tries to bribe Morillo with an English saddle and an Andalusian horse. Morillo just blows him off and humilliates him. However, the ruthless Sámano will have the power and glory when Morillo leaves.

The patriots continue retreat… Iglesias wants to go after them but Alejo stops him and forces him and everyone else to stay put, that their purpose is to protect Samano. Iglesias yells that he is not an officer, but Alejo says yes I am an officer and you are a sub officer, so you owe me obedience.

Pola tells AA that she saw Alejo. They wonder what he is doing in royal troops… She says same as many others, wearing that uniform to stay alive but they want to fight for the patriots.

Alejo tells samano that they would not have lost 7 men if they got reinforcements during the battle. Iglesias is about to tell on Alejo but Samano won’t let him speak.
Arellano tells AA and Pola that Samano did come behind with another troop… During their way back Iglesias gets the chance to tell Samano that Alejo did not let them follow the rebels because Alejo recognized some of his old friends. Samano tells him to put Alejo behind bars when they get back to the cuartel.

Samano gets to Santa Fe. Confuses Leutenant Enrile (2nd in command for Morillo) for Morillo. Samano has Herrera take his things to the palace, but Enrile says no Morillo is there, they will stay elsewhere…

When he locks Alejo up, Iglesias says he will be an officer, perhaps a general, while Alejo will end up dead soon.

Viviano arrives to see Pola… Pola calls him ‘beast’ and tells him Alejo is alive. Andrea reminds Pola that Alejo was part of the royal troop that killed 4 of their countrymen.

Pedrito arrives and Pola and Viviano are really happy to see him well. He tells Pola that him, Lopezito and Alejo switched sides to stay alive. Pedrito tells her Alejo is locked up and why.

Pola manages to get Raimundo (the son of the guy who hired her early on) to help her get to see Alejo in jail.

Alejo tells Arcos he saw Pola.. they were pointing guns at each other. Alejo is outraged the patriots would let a woman fight in such a dangerous mission. Arcos reminds him ‘it’s la pola!’

Officers tells Samano that Morillo is making friends among the poor people and is making improvements… Samano figures Morillo is beginning to prepare his way to the viceroy spot.

Pola gets to see Alejo with Raymundo and Pedrito’s help.
A: What are you doing here?
P: Came to see you. IS it true that you were locked because you let us escape?
A: Yes, I wore the godos uniform because it was the way to stay alive and join you all again.
P: I heard, but if you are with us why did you point guns at us?
A: I had no idea they were patriots, I thought they were bums… they didn’t tell us what they wanted!
P: You didn’t even let us speak!
A: I am not sure why we are even talking about this. It is clear it was just an accident. I wrote several letters.
P: Yes, but I left Guaduas and did not leave address.
A: I know, gertrudis said she had no place to send them to. I thought you did not want to hear from me again. Why did you come back to SF?
P: They were coming real close to me in Guaduas.
A: I don’t understand. Who are you working with now?
P: with the Almeida brothers. They are working for our cause, they are forming a big army. I am helping them recruit and gathering funds from the rich ladies. (Pedrito comes for her) I swear I will find the way to get you out of here.
A: Pola, wait… its been so many years, at least give me a kiss…
P: No, how can you think that, I am embarrassed!
A: You never felt embarrassed before, Pola. What is going on?
P: Nothing, I have to go.
A: Why don’t you want to kiss me? Did you meet someone? … Did you meet someone?
P: Alejo, I was told you had been killed! … no!... I have to go!
A: You met someone? Wait! … Pola!

Morillo meets with Samano. Tells him about the rebels gathering their own army and convincing royalist soldiers to switch sides. Don’t know who the leaders are, but have folks finding out.
Samano offends Morillo saying he got ahead of him in ‘recovering Santa Fe’. Morillo stresses that it is for Spain that he is working… Samano continues arguing then why are you doing improvements in social issues and agriculture.. Morillo wants to know ‘what is your problem?’ … Samano honestly says it is unfair that he has served more than 10 yrs in these lands… even risked his life, fought Narino… knows the people of these lands, know perfectly how to ‘pacify’ them, to make them royal servants again. Accuses Morillo to want the job of viceroy. Kills men all over, changes laws… Morillo claims he came to ‘clean house’ but his job here is almost done and he is about to move on, that his real goals are military ones, to clean all of new Granada from the rebel groups… his first target is Simon Bolivar.
Morillo tells Samano to leave or will have him executed. Also tells him that he had written to the king recommending Samano to become the New Granada viceroy. But now will write another one to explain his change of mind.

Andrea talks to Pola, Pola is not even sure Alejo is still her fiancee… but her feelings have not changed. Pola says she failed Alejo… Alejo is having a similar conversation with Arcos in his cell… Alejo is mad at Pola. He sacrificed everything he has and everything he is for her. HE believed her. They had a promise/vow. Arcos tells him to wait to talk to Pola to find out what happened. IF things are that complex, then just find another one. Alejo says the only one I love is la Pola.

They announce that in honor of the king’s birthday, the Commander Morillo has decided to pardon the men who are in jail for having fought the royal troops, as long as they did not have high ranking roles and have shown their renewed fidelity to Spain. When Alejo exits the jail, MI and her parents are there waiting for him. They want him to stay with them in their house. He is reluctant but has no better choice. MI won’t let him argue against it. Eusebia reminds him they are relatives. They respected his wishes of not letting Maria Teresa know about his demises… Pola watches him leave with the Valencias…

MI tells Alejo that she left the vows and convent behind. She has decided to strive to become a good mother and wife. She releases him by saying she won’t marry him. He tells her he is sure she will find the right guy. She asks about his ‘fiancee’, he is not sure he still has one… Alejo asks her if she knows where he can find Jose Hilario (Lopezito). Alejo finds Lopezito and asks him if he knows how to contact the Almeida brothers.

Samano brings a saddle to Morillo as a present. Morillo brushes him off… Samano says he also brought an Andalusian horse (probably his own horse which he is willing to trade for the role of viceroy). Again Morillo brushes him off. Tells Samano it is not necessary to ‘kiss a__ ‘ to him. He will leave Samano in charge in a few days… temporarily, until he finds the right individual for the job. He will have to revive the economy, handle the tax collection and handle the rebel troops. His 2nd in command tells Samano the leads point to the Almeida brothers.

Alejo goes to Andrea’s house.. meets with AA… Alejo tells him he wants to join the forces against the royalist troops.. he thought Lopezito had told them about him. Pola arrives before they reveal Alejo’s name, which surprises AA. Alejo is also surprised Pola is now called Policarpa.
AA: The famous Alejo Sabarain?...
AA tells Pola Alejo wants to join the forces… asks Pola if Alejo has the qualifications to join them. Pola says sure of course, AA’s brother asks Pola what if he turns around on us too? Pola says she would put my hands to the fire for him.
AA backs up Pola in leaving Alejo working with them locally at SF.

Morillo lies to Samano saying he did send the 2nd letter to the king… But later tells his colonel that he did not, but did not want to give Samano the days to enjoy his naming as viceroy in advance.

Pola tries to catch Alejo but he is red with jealousy and yells at her that AA is the man she fell for. Alejo asks her if she lost her virtue. She slaps him. Pola tells Alejo he never lost the darn custom to accuse her of having no moral. Alejo asks if she kissed AA. She keeps quiet for a second so he concludes she did. Pola asks him to let her explain. He asks her how could she. She says the same way you let a woman come to get you when you got out of jail. He leaves in a huff.

Francisco goes to Maria Teresa’s family house. At first he tries to appologize to her… He blames Alejo that they had a perfect life until Alejo put his eyes on Pola… She says she always knew he married her for her family’s money… she had hopes he would end up loving her, but that never happened. She realized he did not reject her for dumb, but for her race. He tells her he loves her I(for first time), continues claiming he has changed, she buckles and is about to say yes… but when her brother comes back to defend her (he had visited Francisco’s hometown in Spain and realized Francisco’s ‘nobility’ was faked, that he was the ‘black sheep’ in a family of iron workers) and Francisco insults her brother she changes her mind and they kick him out. He keeps insulting her family.

Alejo ends up at the Valencias and instinctively kisses MI for jealousy… At that moment Eusebia comes out and Alejo ends up having to ask MI to marry him… MI is shocked…

At Andrea’s Ambrosio tells Pola to just give it some time, their ‘differences’ will just go away. She keeps insisting she failed Alejo, even though AA says basically nothing happened between them. She tells him that she thought Alejo was dead and AA is a good/worthy man. He thanks her even if he does not really get why she said that. He is now concerned that Alejo and Pola will work together, they can risk their missions. Pola insists Alejo would be really useful in SF. She won’t talk to Alejo again, except for work. AA says ok, will let him work here, beside you. She thanks him and says he is very generous. She is not sure Alejo will even come back.

Eusebia asks Alejo why the change of mind, he says his dream was always to marry and have a family and MI is the ideal woman to do it with. Asks MI if she is still interested in marrying him. She says she had discarded the idea, but if God put him in her way again, she accepts to marry him. This time it is different, she is not the naïve tantrumy girl, now she is a woman worthy of Alejo. Eusebia wants a grand wedding. Alejo says no, what is going on around them is not up for grand parties, he has no idea about his father, but his mother would come.

AA tells his brother he is interested in Pola but he likes to play fair… will let her decide.

Alejo at the Valencias house is breathing hard like regretting the new hole he just dug himself into. Pola is crying holding the gold medal.

I feel like locking Alejo and Pola in a cell with a couple of videos which will show Pola what is what... LOL and then they can either kill each other or get together for good... whichever.

Alejo deserved that slapping real good... two years of waiting and then he behaves like this only because she did not have time to explain?? GMAB!!

Martaivett: Thanks again for the beautiful recap. I feel just as frustrated at this whole situation as do Alejo and Pola.

The writers have gone out of their way to show us what a b****** Samano is with his whining to Morillo. His page in Colombian history must be black. On the contrary, Morillo is presented as a man of honor and intelligence.

It also seems that the Spanish armed forces is limitless. Soldiers have been sent to the New World in one wave after another (and, of course, locals have been recruited). And, there are all the wars with England and France.

ugh!!! when will the 2 get with it already???

I love the Ambrosio character.

shallowgal - I like Ambrosio too. He's good looking and he's much more mature and intelligent than Alejo.

I was happy that they finally showed us what's been going on with Francisco again also. He claims to have changed and then insults Maria Theresa's brother by calling him "Americano" with disgust. That Francisco is some piece of work.

Thanks for the summaries. I cannot tell you how much I enjoy the novela La Pola. I've seen LOTS of novelas, but this one is really special. By the way, does anyone know the name of the song they play on La Pola when Alejo and La Pola are together romantically? It's a female voice at a slow tempo. I love the song, and would love to know the title and singer. Thanks again!

Thanks Pasofino and Marta.

Glad to see that our Francisco is the same rodent that he's always been. I was so afraid that Maria Teresa was going to fall for his line.

Now I'm torn. I've always wanted to see Pola and Alejo togrther, but I also am liking Ambrosio a lot.

Welcome Patricia. We all agree with you that this TN is very special.

The song is Mirame by Marta Gómez who wrote and also sings it.

Carlos

such a beautiful song. i rewind a couple of times, every time they play it.

Thank you so much, Carlos.
