Cuando Me Enamoro #136 Friday 10/28/11 "Pain Is Inevitable But Suffering Is An Option"
This week, we're the victims of the first falling anvil as we're treated to a new intro! Arturo Peniche appears as an "actuación especial". Could Padre Juan Cristobal be a recurring character from now on? As the intro continues, we have several added scenes including an extended edition of the grape-stomp. Lovely!
Fast forwarding through the information from yesterday, Jero tells Regina that he is having a child with Marina. Regi is happy to hear that it won't break up Nata and Jero. Regi flashes back to her feelings of betrayal after finding out about Roberto. She is sure that Nata will be an excellent second mother for the baby.
In the hospital waiting room, Berta asks Nata how Jero could still be with her considering that Nata is the daughter of a serial killer. Jero understands that Fina's actions are her actions alone, not Nata's. Things are going so well between Nata and Jero, they are engaged again. Berta feigns excitement over the news as Agustin arrives.
Nata recalls her discussion with Jero that Augie could be a murderer. Nata carefully chit chats with him and Berta can't help herself from telling Augie about Nata's engagement. Augie keeps a cool head and listens to Nata explain that she and Jero are going to have both a church and a civil ceremony. A few tense moments pass before Augie leaves.
Over at the hacienda Nurse Elsa draws blood from Karina and gossips the livelong day about Doctora Marina's nausea due to her pregnancy. Manuela and Matilde are floored but Karina admits to already knowing about it. Mati is upset Kari didn't tell them and Manuela teases her for being a gossip.
Berta meets with Augie outside the hospital. Nata already knows about Jero's baby with Marina; it isn't going to break them up. Augie isn't so sure. He plans to press the issue and Berta offers to help. She's tired of seeing Nata so happy.
Mama Merida sits alone in the casa and decides to "transform other things" if Carlos won't let her makeover Matilde. She goes shopping for decorative things. I try not to fall asleep.
Carlos introduces Mati and Manuela to Leoncio, the new worker at the hacienda. They are surprised (Leoncio is a Little Person) but very respectful.
Selene calls Adriana for a Chema update. Meanwhile, Chema's Padre visits Chema's apartment but he does not open the door. "My padre? After so many years?" Chema wonders.
Lazaro calls Jero to ask if he and Nata would come to their wedding. He absolutely agrees to be there and if Gonzo is doing well Nata will come with him. Jero offers to pay for the wedding reception at the hacienda and Lazaro is extremely grateful.
Marina comes back into work despite looking awfully green. She admits that she is going to miss so many things about the pueblo.
In Honorio's office, Antonio talks to the Detective and agrees to accept responsibility in his debacle with Fina. It's entirely possible that he could go to jail. Speaking of jail, a gang of badass prisoners menace Fina but she is not scared in the least. Fina and another inmate get in a fist fight and the guards break them up.
Honorio gives Adriana the good news that Gonzo's mansion can finally change ownership to Nata. Hon and Adri discuss their sadness over both Gonzo and Chema.
Nata and Constanza sit by Gonzo's bedside and talk to him. Berta joins them yet her words of comfort and love lack the sincerity of the other ladies. Jero and Regina join the group and, a few moments later, Gonzo's eyes open! They flag down a doctor who checks Gonzo over but has no good news. Gonzo is alive but appears to have no connection to the world. He isn't responding to any stimuli. The hope in the room is shattered.
The Doctor compares Gonzo's situation to a television that has been disconnected. He is alive but there is no connection between his body and his brain. They plan to start intensive therapy to test his physical, emotional, and psychological functions. It could take anywhere from a few days to many years before they truly know if Gonzo is going to recover or remain a vegetable.
Berta plays Debbie Downer as she throws a mini-fit about Gonzo's recovery possibly taking years. He might never wake up! Even if he does, he might not be the same person anymore! Nata tells Berta to cut out the negativity; it's the last thing they need. Berta huffs off but Nata assures everyone that Gonzo is strong and will be with them again.
Manuela and Karina chat about the upcoming wedding. Kari is worried that Doc Nesme might show up at the wedding to ruin it. Manuela comforts Kari; the police are after Doc and he has no reason to return.
Lazaro and Leoncio run errands in town. Once Laz leaves Leoncio alone for a moment, Leo calls He-Whose-Bucket-Has-Not-Yet-Been-Kicked to tell him about Kari's wedding.
In the hospital chapel, Regina and Constanza pray for Gonzo's recovery. Nata prays for the same but she understands that quality of life is better than the quantity of life.
Jero calls Marina to check up on her. He offers to come out to see her but Marina asks him to stop calling her. She will never keep his child from him but it hurts her too much to continue talking to him. Jero refuses to give up on her or his baby.
Fina is not taking well to solitary confinement. She pounds on the door and cries to be let out. Hmm, might this be a foreshadowing to how our villainous viper might meet her end? The director at the jailhouse refuses to allow Fina to be moved until her punishment is up.
Matias, Honorio, and Adriana are debriefed on Gonzo's diagnosis. Everyone anguishes anew but Nata decides that it's time for all the Monterrubios to be strong and optimistic. Regi, Connie, and Hon leave for the cafeteria. Jero admires Nata's attitude and strength. Nata learned it from her padre: "El dolor es inevitable, pero, el sufrimiento es una alternativa" / "Pain is inevitable but suffering is an option". We end as they cuddle on the couch.
Avances: Detestable Doc crushes a glass with his fist and says "I would rather see you dead than married to someone else!" while Augie thinks pervy thoughts about Nata.

Perhaps its an Over 50 thing, but I was floored by the new intro. And your old/new Bishop had a place of prominence. Does this mean we'll see more of him? Does this mean Padre Gossip will tell his last tale soon?
Then Poor Chema finally gets his cut-to-commercial picture. What are they trying to do? Break our hearts even more?
Can't wait for real plot discussions. I love our marathon weekend analysis! Thanks everyone for the still-to-come laughs.
Rosemary la Otra
I laughed when Manuela called Leoncio "hijo".
Amy, looking forward to your recap. I hope it's up before I have to take off for the weekend. (No rush though.)
Any new ones starting? I need to have something lined up as I cannot go cold turkey and be Novelaless!
Looking forward to todays recap...
Rosemary
I would like it very much if LQNPA follows CME.
Noticed the new intro as well. Got so excited to see Arturo as well Rosemary - better not be a teaser for that little tidbit we saw of him, never to see him again. With the Chema clip, that would just be such a Fina tactic to us faithful.
Thought I'd check in and say "Hey!" as I'm trying to ignore my Boilermakers getting trampled by Michigan, focusing instead on following Barca futbol online ( and happily winning that one so far.)
Hope everyone is enjoying their weekend. For those out East, just think of the snow as a beautiful weekend reason not to do any outside fall cleanup.
I always enjoy seeing old friends in new novelas. In particular it's good to see my favorite dwarf whom we most recently got to see again as la Poderosa's faithful attendant in the repeat of Alborada. He is getting more lines in this but I thought he looked more distinguished with the facial hair in Alborada.
Also it was good to see our favorite fat and sassy rats again, this time keeping Fina company in solitary confinement. I think that these guys get at least a walk-on (crawl-on?) in every TN. They must have an excellent agent.
I was a little disappointed in the Goose. If that's as good as she's got then it's a good thing for her that Fina will soon be moving on to more important things.
Poor Gonzo. In his vegetative state they've frozen his face in that (for me anyway) hilarious astonished/bewildered expression he so often gets.
I will predict now that Leoncio will eventually join Team Good. All it's gonna take are a few of Manuela's tasty meals.
Carlos
And Berta wonders why everyone prefers Nata? When you're staring and watching everyone interact, rally pay attention girl. And listen to what comes out of your mouth versus your sister. Love how she wants to have Gina as her mother, but it never crosses her mind to comfort said "mother" or even try.
Carlos, brilliant shout out to our favorite supporting actors union. Doesn't seem they are getting as big a part as in Llena, but it's good to see in this global economy they are still in demand and working. And sharing the screen with Fina - perfect casting.
One last observation - as much as I hate them, Augie looks better in those stupid windbreakers than he does in a suit. Of course, Jero rocks a suit, so maybe that's why Augie comes off so Blah in his.
What in the heck is Mama M going to transform? Carlos and Mati's new house? The hacienda? Her own house? I smell trouble whenever she is around.
I was amazed last night that Roberta continues to have no social skills at all. She couldn't even do a halfway decent job of faking emotion. The only thing she does well is complain and whine. I think daisynjay called it, comforting others just doesn't cross her mind.
Carlos, I thought the same thing!! That poor Gonzo's face is frozen in his frequent "astonished/bewildered" expression.
Thanks Amy.
What is Carlos' awful mother thinking buying all that? I assumed it was for Carlos and Mati's house since she's already said it doesn't suit him. That was funny, Amy, when you said you tried not to fall asleep in that scene.
Yes, Sylvia, that was funny when Manuela called Leoncio "hijo". Hopefully he will enjoy her cooking enough to flip sides as our Carlos suggests.
Debbie Downer is an apt description of Berta. The contrast between the two girls is extreme. Ew, when Regina walked in the hospital room and sulky Roberta in her most gravelly voice barely got out "Hola Mama". Don't bust your butt, Berta.
I liked how Renata sat down in the waiting room, clapped her hands in a "let's get on with it" fashion, and took charge. Regina will be so happy once the hija truth is exposed.
Amy, loved your description of Fina as our "villainous viper". Oh yes she is. Where's that raspy laugh now?
Sounds like Rosemary #1 and Sylvia already know of La Que No Podia Amor and think positively of it possible taking over our timespot when CME ends. I Spanishdict'd the translation and came up with Which We Can't Love? Is that right? Would it be She Who We Can't Love since there is a La in it?

I just spent the afternoon with Cheryl. We went to this nice coffeehouse near her hotel and talked for a bit, then we went to the Alameda Central park and walked around for a bit and finally visited the Tolerance Museum which was right across the street. I wish we could have spent more time together but unfortunately I had a class in the morning.
She is such an interesting person, she has a great taste for art and is very curious and compassionate. I was very happy to get to meet her and I had a great time with her.
I think this year has been great, I've gotten to meet two very nice and warm personalities from Caray Caray. This is an amazing community, I'm so glad to be part of it.
I'm so busy this semester but hopefully next year I will spend more time with you. Probably with La Que No Podía Amar, which is the only novela I'm half watching at the moment.
Jarocha
Jarocha- How wownderful that you got to spend time with Cheryl! It sounds like you two had a great day. Good luck in school.
I checked out the esmas.com official site for the individual characters.
http://televisa.esmas.com/entretenimiento/telenovelas/la-que-no-podia-amar/elenco/313723/gustavo-duran
Hope this works.
There's still lots of exciting stuff to go - it's nowhere near wrapping up.
FWIW La que no podía amar I would translate as "She whom I couldn't love" although you can't actually tell whether it is first person or third.
Sounds like it might be promising. I'm hoping so, because right now CME is the only novela I'm enjoying on TV and I've already seen most of the episodes. I've given up on Fuerza del Destino (too dark/twisted), and couldn't get into La Familia con Suerte (too much like a slow US sitcom). So, I feel like I'm in a desert. Well, actually I've been watching Pasión on YouTube to compensate, so I'm not exactly suffering too much - LOL! And enjoying the Caray, Caray recaps.
Jarocha, I'm so glad you got to meet Cheryl. My husband and I sure enjoyed meeting her. What a treat!
Audrey
Loved your new moniker for the doc and your concluding sentence about our bad hombre "thinking pervy thoughts about Renata". Pretty PG but still, I agree...pervy.
Daisynjay...sorry about Purdue. We bruised and battered Buckeyes are still in a state of blissful shock after beating Wisconsin last night. And I was up until well past midnight just on the vapors, and that almost never happens.
I know Audrey doesn't want us to get ahead of ourselves, but Daisy and I are fretful souls (clutching our Chema tees in denial about his impending doom)and we seem to work better knowing there is a light at the end of the tunnel.
I don't know how that light can be La Que No Podia Amar though, if it is already airing. Although I can't pull it up on my Show Search Guide, Wiki said its been airing since August and Jarocha is (half) watching it. Oh well... we'll handle whatever comes our way after CME with a clap and good Renata attitude.
Jarocha and Cheryl and Emilia and Mike and Sylvia and almost Vivi - I enjoy living vicariously through your visits. How fun for you all! I hope that if anyone comes skiing in Utah this winter, they'll let me know. I can't promise a balloon ride, but we can always tour the Mormon Temple (jk... unless of course you would want to do that!)
Off for a hike on a beautiful fall day in Utah.

Audrey
P.S. Folks - I just bought tickets to see Fernando Colunga live (his play Manos Quietas) here in McAllen next Friday! 6 rows from the stage!
As for me I could use a walk to work out the kinks -- I went of a wedding last night and I am suffering from Salsa Sciatica -- or Merengue Malady. The bride's family from the DF burned up the dance floor and I tried to keep up.
The new intro caught me by surprise also -- and I hated to see the devastated weeping Jero -- a taste of the hard times to come. It's been so nice to watch Jero & Nata interact in such a loving and supportive way. We knew it couldn't last but .....
So Auggie has a plan to tear J & N apart but it requires that she be in Valle de Guadalupe. I shudder to think what it may be. Speaking of shuddering that (yes) pervy kiss in the avances is shudder inducing. As you pointed out Amy Auggie kept a cool head when Berta told him of the plans to remarry in a civil ceremony and to cancel the annulment. It must have cost him a lot to keep from exploding.
Guera
Audrey, what is the "Pasion" you are watching on Youtube? I am watching "Corazon Salvaje" on DVD, but it's kind of hard to follow with all the cuts and I don't really like costume dramas, anyway. I just got it to ease my Angelique Boyer and Alejandro Avila withdrawal from "Teresa" -- but they're hardly in it, really. Lots of our friends from CME, though (Gonzo, Augie, and Laz so far.)
Thanks for the recap, Amy, and everyone else. Mike and I haven't seen an episode for two weeks but feel as if we're ready for tomorrow's, thanks to the recappers and commenters.
You guys are giving Mike and me extremely swelled heads, with all of the nice things you have said. We loved meeting Sylvia a couple of years ago and Cheryl this year. Vivi has such a terrific, lively voice, I just wanted to climb down the phone line and give her a hug! I wanted to find an Amtrak bigwig and kick him for making us miss meeting Vivi. We ended up nearly 1 1/2 hours late into DC. Next time, Vivi??
We went out for cabrito for my birthday, took some good friends who'd never had it, and I was treated to a rousing performance of Las Mañanitas from the restaurant staff. Wow! Unforgettable!
Audrey
Got fresh cabrito this week from a friend who has an organic farm. Goat pozole on the way!
I'm warm and cozy in the D.C. metro area of Maryland. We got snow, but it melted before nightfall Sat.
Several things OT. I only heard recently about FC and his play. Is it going to travel?
I see that Guy Ecker is doing a new telenovela, as is Blanca Soto (our Eva Luna stars), but not together. Blanca's is to be called Talisman and will start production this year or next. Guy's is called Corazon Apasionada, and is another Venvision-Univision collaboration.
La Que No Podia Amar could also be translated She who couldn't Love (past tense), or if "I" am speaking, it would be She, whom I could not love.
Thank you for mentioning Montecristo with Silvia Navarro and Diego Olivera on TV Azteca. I do get it on expanded cable and I'll give it a try, tomorrow at 1 EDT.
Still OT--Music. I heard a piece on NPR the other day talking about Son Jarocho, the music tradition coming out of Veracruz. It's typically played on a stringed instrument called a jarana usually accompanied by harp. Wikipedia has a good description.
It's lovely dancing, foot-stamping music. Of course everyone knows La Bamba--this is where it originated. Here is a version done with authentic instruments.

This clip is better listened to than watched. Once you get to that page, though, Youtube offers lots of entries for different songs along with dances.
Nothing to add to the wonderful comments. Keep the Nesmeisms coming....
NOK
Just finished watching my recording. Love that it ended on such a sweet note with Jero saying how much he admires Nata and embracing her. They really have come a long was as a couple. I'm not sure what Augie has planned, but it would have to be really MAJOR for Nata and Jero to distrust/leave each other again.
I almost felt sorry for Berta this episode. She just doesn't get it, does she? She doesn't understand how to express love, support and affection if she's not immediately getting something in return. The writer/director in each of these scenes in the hospital always partner everyone else with someone, while Berta is always off to the side alone, unless Nata pulls her in (and Berta's usually quick to pull away). In these scenes in Gonzo's room it was Nata-Cons and Jero-Gina, then Nata-Gina and Jero-Cons.
I agree that Fina has begun faking being crazy to build her insanity case during her trial. The whimpering and screaming in the cell was all an act, I believe.
I also enjoyed the change-up in the opening sequence. It had a fresh feel to it. I like it just as much as I liked the original openening.

Audrey
I noticed that the opening scene no longer has Roberta happily squishing grapes. The grape-stomping scene is the one that actually happened at the Vendimia.
Happy Halloween Everyone!
I hope they are not going to leave Gonzalo in his current state. . .seems the writers are not above sacrificing the lives and vital essence of characters to dramatize the evil of the villians!
Lila
I always fast forward through the beginning and replay so I missed the new opening. Look forward to seeing it tonight.
Carlos: I was hoping the same thing re: Leoncio. He would have to be one of the evil ones to resist all the goodwill sent his way by the La Bonitaites.
Glad to see Renata gathering her strength and not allowing the news about Gonzo getting her down.
I'd take Berta's whining over Marina's any time. I'm thinking the good doc is going to take a powder. Leaving Jero frantically looking for her. Selfish witch.
Robey
Happy birthday, Mike!
It's pretty amazing to watch characters who are super nasty to everyone and then can't figure out why no one likes them. So then they get even meaner trying to FORCE their way into relationships, and bizarrely, this doesn't work very well. I don't think it will ever occur to Roberta that people like Renata more because she's nicer...it's just all because life is so unfair to poor Berta.
Is tonight the night I volunteered to recap? I hope something good happens.
