Cuando Me Enamoro #137 Monday 10/31/11 A few trips down Memory Lane (it’s full of potholes and in a bad part of town).

Repeating from last week, Marina told Jerónimo to leave her alone and he said he will never stop looking out for her and their child.
Meanwhile over in Fina’s fine new accommodations, she hollered at her new fuzzy little butler to get her out of there. Fuzzybutt is not as easily intimidated as the staff she’s used to, though, so he merely continued patrolling the windowsill while his buddy spit-polished the toilet. Fina seems to have the idiot human guards convinced she really is crazy, though. The prison director says it isn’t up to them to decide so Fina’s stuck in solitary anyway.
In the Monterrubio Family Memorial Waiting Room, Matías, Honorio, and Adriana are informed of Gonzo’s new lights on, but nobody at home status. Mat and Adri go to visit him and Renata encourages everyone to keep their hopes up. Honorio, Constanza, and Regina go off to the cafeteria, leaving Jero and Renata alone. Jero says he admires her attitude, Renata gives us last week’s aphorism, and I think we’re finally picking up with new material.
Mat and Adri look at Gonzo and are sad. Mat is going to stay the night. Adri says she loves him and she’s with him always. Except, you know, right now, when she’s going to go sleep in her own bed. But mostly, totally with him. She leaves and Matías remembers when Fina first came into his life, murdered his fútbol, and told him to scram. He squashes that thought with a better memory of reuniting with his father, then tells Gonzo he’s so proud to have him as a father. I guess Mat has finally grown up a little and learned not to castigate people when they’re already down; not noticing how abusive Fina was to the kids all those years seems like pretty pathetic fathering to me.
Jero tells Renata that Lázaro and Karina are getting married the coming weekend and want them to be witnesses. Renata is thrilled and says she’d love to go, but with her dad’s condition she can’t. Jero suggests that if Gonzo is stable, they could make a really quick trip of it; after all, his recovery will probably be long and she can’t just sit in the hospital the entire time. Like Laz says, you have to look for happiness; sadness comes on its own. If going to the wedding would make her happy, she should go and they can fly back immediately if necessary. Renata agrees. Roberta eavesdrops and glares at their affectionate functionality.
Roberta calls Augustín and reports that Jero and Renata will be heading to La Bonita for the wedding. He says after what Renata is going to experience, she’ll decide on her own to leave Jero para siempre. Bwahahahaha. He’s heading over tomorrow to set his dastardly scheme in motion.
In the hospital caf, Honorio and Constanza tell Regina that Chema has a brain tumor.
Chema drops by the house to tell Adri that his father came to his apartment, but he didn’t talk to him. Adri convinces him that if his dad came to visit after all this time, it must be really important so he should definitely talk to him. After all, haven’t they learned from the deaths of their mothers and Gonzalo’s injuries that you shouldn’t leave important things until it’s too late? Chema agrees because he lurves Adri so much. He smooches her on the cheek and she nervously tries to cling to the fine line she’s walking.
The Ensenada prison guy gripes with the prison doctor about the one who got away. He asks whether Dr. DrunkySkunk said anything while he was in the prison hospital which might be a clue as to where he is now, but jaildoc has nothing. Other guy wants to find him ASAP.
Dr. AllVile Nasty sits in his new office, self-medicating as usual. His feet are on the desk with the bottoms aimed at us, which is offensive and insulting in some cultures. Since it’s Nesme, though, the rudeness of his soles can’t remotely compare to the repulsiveness of his soul, so ni modo. He mutters to himself that he knows Karina has always preferred Lázaro, but he will never have her. Never. He crushes his glass in his hand (also ni modo; it was just for show as he was drinking straight from the bottle) and says she’ll be dead before he’ll let her be with another.
Elsa tries to pep-talk Marina, at least for the baby’s sake. It can’t be good for the kid to marinate in maudlin moroseness. Marina just keeps crying and flashes back to playing doctor with Jero and tells the baby he or she is a product of LURVE, f’rills. Boredom plus hormones equals true love, I guess. Frankly, I don’t think math is Marina’s best subject.
Oh, sweet relief, Carlos and Matilde. Even though they’re fighting. Mati’s mad that Carlos didn’t tell her Marina is pregnant, and obviously he is obligated to tell her everything. Carlos says no way. It’s one thing to trust her, but spilling other people’s secrets is a different matter. She says gossip gets around anyway; as the saying goes, small town, big inferno. Carlos says Marina is going back to the big city, so that should put an end to it, but of course Jero is going to take care of his child. Mati finally calms down and thinks about how hard this is going to be for Jero, Marina, and their child, rather than how difficult it is for her to not hear the gossip first.
Back in the D.F., Jero meets with Obispo Juan Cristóbal to tell his side of the story. We get lots of flashbacks to review the action. Meeting Renata, Rafael dead, vengeance, lies. PLUS flashbacks of ENDA: JC telling Carlota he’d rather spend the rest of his life rotting in prison than a moment in bed with her, etc. That was such a good show. JC tells Jero that before he became a priest, when he believed Macarena had killed herself, he became an alcoholic, so he understands Jero completely losing it when he was told his brother had committed suicide. Jero gets to the really bad part: he believed Renata was responsible for Rafa’s death, so he swore to make her life hell and made his own life hellish in the process.
Regina counsels Renata on dealing with her emotional trauma, as though she knows anything useful about it.
**Here the Emergency Alert System breaks in with an abduction announcement, and I miss some of the show. Please fill in anything relevant in the comments (and, of course, if you know anything about the missing kid’s dondeabouts, I hope you have already called the police. They are saying the abductor is violent. Be safe and get home, kiddo.)**
…Renata tells Regina that surely with her therapy skills Gonzalo will recover soon.
Jero tells Bishop JC that he realized Renata couldn’t be La Bonita, so he renounced vengeance and started seeking justice instead. JC remarks with a totally straight face, “so many sins are committed en nombre del amor.” Jero continues his story of trying to win Renata back.
Renata says encouraging stuff to Gonzalo and shows him photos in an album and cries talking about her childhood memories with him. Tears run down Gonzo’s cheeks and he looks at her affectionately. Seems to me he has some connection with the world.
Jero swears to Obispo JC that he really truly loves Renata, totally and for sure. JC believes him, and Jero doesn’t even mention the sittin’ in a tree, K-I-S-S-I-N-G part. JC says they’ll let them know in a few days about cancelling the annulment. Jero says if they do annul the marriage, he and Renata will just request to be married again. Jero leaves and JC is sad that his life with Macarana didn’t work out as well as things did for Renata and Jero. {I think this is because JC gave Mac a diamond ring, when he should have given her a big bottle of Eau de Protagonista. Being the star is the only way to ensure survival}.
Selene runs into Roberta at the spa and chastises her for pampering herself while the rest of her family suffers. Selene isn’t too reformed to rub it in that Berta’s mommy is in prison; how mortifying. Roberta boredly says that Fina isn’t her mother; she just kidnapped her from Regina. Selene is agog.
Benjamin sneaks up on Chema at the charity place kitchen. Ben says he’s been a bad father and should have accepted Chema’s choices. They make up. Big hugs. Chema’s a little confused.
Roberta invites Selene out to eat to tell her the whole story, but Selene says they’ll never be friends again, because Roberta is bitter and nasty and will turn out just like Fina even if she isn’t her daughter. What’s-his-guts joins them and Roberta sneers at him, but he says dating Selene is a huge step up from slutty bitter hag Roberta, who will never be happy with anyone.
Adri has joined Matías in the hospital cafeteria and is back to saying “estoy contigo” now that she is done sleeping comfortably and primping and chatting with her other novio. She knows it’s a bad time, but she wants Matías’s support in making Chema happy in his last days. Chema believes she’s his novia so she wants to encourage that. “And what if I don’t support this plan?” Mat asks. “Well, then I guess I’ll give back the engagement ring and break up with you, and you can go find someone else and I’ll play girlfriend to Chema,” Adri cries. She just can’t let Chema die alone.
Avances: Marina’s upset that Jero and Renata are comin’ to town; Augie mutters darkly, Fina’s on trial and thinking menacing thoughts at the courtroom peanut gallery.
Sorry, no vocab tonight. The captions were absolute crap.

Alas, poor Chema.

I don't have the new sign-in info for Delicious. Can someone else tag this? Muchas gracias.

Oy, why do I check the news right before bed? The missing baby's mother was found stabbed to death. From now on I should stick to CC and only fret about fictional evil.

Julia

Brilliant recap. Between you and the other Caray recappers and the flashbacks on the show I feel caught up. Thanks to all of you.

I agree with you; I think Gonzo is in there somewhere. I thought the Gina/Nata scenes tonight were very sweet, although Gina hardly seems old enough to be Nata's mother.

I just loved seeing the scene with Carloca and Obispo Papa tonight. The purple eye shadow was there in all it's glory on Halloween night.

Julia, thank you for filling in for Cheryl tonight. I really do miss your clever and affectionately caustic take on things.

So many things that made me laugh, but some of my favorites...Fuzzybutt, Adri with Matias but, uhm, not right now, Dr. DrunkySkunk, rudeness of his soles and soul, boredom plus hormones equals true love (ouch!).

And we have another scene where Regina and Renata are dressed, and look, exactly alike. I think maybe Gonzo, in his vegetable state, is the first one to realize their uncanny similarities.

Not sure what you missed during the emergency break, but I think Regina tells Renata she's sure that Renata will love Marina's bebe just as Gonzo loved Renata and Roberta. And anyway, soon Renata will give Jero a baby of her own. They giggle and bond.

Julia, even though your captions were crap you managed to cut through most of it and get right to the heart of each scene. Nice job. I tagged this in Delicious.

Oh dear, so sad to hear about the missing baby's mother. I hope the baby will be found soon.

Great recap Julia, thanks! Lot's of chuckles.

Audrey

I snuck in watching my recording before leaving for work this morning (that's when you know you're addicted). Thanks so much Julia for filling in and giving us your usual wonderful snark. I especially loved your comments on Adri, her dedication to Matias and her fine line with Chema. How will Matias react tonight? With his usual tantrum, or will he surprise us with calm maturity?

Yes, we noticed early on that Gonzo was a loving papa, but totally clueless about the abuse of his kids (mainly Nata and Matias) that was going on right under his nose. Seeing Nata and Gina together at his bedside seems to be bringing Gonzo back to life and getting his synapses fired up.

Looks like the crap is really going to hit the fan at Laz and Kari's wedding. Between Augie and his dastardly plan for Nata and Jero, and Dr. AllVile Nasty (love that one) and his vow that Kari is better dead than with anyone else, it looks like the writers are gearing up for some more chaos. And before that we get Fina's trail. Oh goody!

Marina is delusional, but I really wish the nurse and Alfie would stop feeding her delusions. Just because Jero likes her, and was attracted enough to her to christen her desk, does not mean that he will suddenly fall in love with her and leave his wife for her. Get real people!

*trial, not trail

Fabulous, Julia. What fun it is having you do a guest recap for Cheryl. You always give us such quotable lines and phrases and my favorite today is neatly tucked into your narrative:

"affectionate functionality"

Simple and undemanding, yet something the world could use a lot more of.

Am I the only one who finds this annulment stuff a bit strange? Wouldn't you think, "Hey we changed our minds... we really do love each other... sorry to have bothered you... nevermind..." would be enough for most obispos?

I know Obispo Padre Papá is something of an icon but for me (having not seen ENDA) the gut seems voyeuristic. Not to mention that he seems a bit overly familiar in his chats with el Señor.

I don't want to be a jinx, but the fact that Renata brought up Gitana to the Gonzo Gourd (hey, he's gonna be OK) coupled with Augie anxious to have Renata back in Hooterville makes me fearful that our pretty horsy may figure into his plans.

Glad that you're getting up to speed Elna June and welcome back Emelia and Mike.

Carlos

Julia, this is wonderful. I laughed all the way through. All these flashbacks sure help even those of us who have been here all along remember some of the details we had forgotten.

The addition of the Obispo to tie his own suffering to that of Nata & Jero is a great touch.

I am so-o-o-o worried about what Auggie has in store for Renata --- not to mention Dr. Awful who would rather see Kari dead than with another.

Again Julia --- so many great lines that I can't even begin to quote them. Thanks!

Güera

Julia, thank you for the great recap, you didn't miss a thing.

I loved the title, it says it all. I think all of the other wonderful phrases have been covered by others.

Dr. Tatas needs to get over herself! Wouldn't you just love to go to a puddle of self-pity for medical help. I guess that goes for both doctors.

Gracias,

Rosemary

Good question about the annulment process Carlos. Not being Catholic, I had to look it up. I didn't see anything about both parties wanting to cancel the annulment, but everything I read says that the Chruch takes it VERY seriously and does a LOT of investigation to determine if they will grant the annulment. The idea of intent when taking the sacraments during the ceremony is key, and so the real determining factor should be what Jero's intent was when he took his vows, not what he feels for Nata now. As we saw from the flashbacks, at that moment when he took his vows he actually admitted to himself how much he loved Nata and wanted to be with her, so I think their marriage is valid because of that.

I did also find this: "A separated or divorced person should live in a way that reflects the fact that they're still married. They shouldn't marry, live with, or even date someone else. To do so would be adulterous. Someone who is divorced or separated should be celibate."

I think Jero broke that rule, big time! He didn't mention Marina to Obispo JC, I noticed...

Thanks for reminding me Vivi. One might think Jero boinking and impregnating Marina might at least have deserved an "Oh by the way...".

Chema seems to have a rather selective memory. He remembers Daddy dropping by but just can't seem to get it straight (even after a number of pointed reminders) that Adri is not his novia.

Carlos

Great recap Julia.
I have also been wondering about this annulment thing. In reality it is not a big deal these days. I had one about 25 years ago. My ex just filled out some paperwork and a year later our marriage was annulled. I thought maybe Jero was going to spill the beans about Marina and the bishop was going to annul the marriage and force him (strongly suggest) to marry Marina.
Or it could just be a plug to sell the DVD's of the old TN.

Julia, this guest recap was a romp through a field full of wonderful words. Such fun and the story keeps on going.

So sorry to hear about that baby's disappearance and murdered mother. We had an exact same tragedy here in the DC metro area recently. But they caught the father/boyfriend with another woman in NC, I think. He had murdered the child as well.

Chuchi--I thought the same thing about the ENDA plug. But it could also have been a very clever extender. We've got OPP (Obispo Padre Papa) for appearances in three episodes now. The church (writers) could just have sent Jero and Nata a yes or no in a letter. But, ni modo, I love seeing Arturo P. in any little bit.

The minute I saw Berta evesdropping in the hospital, I saw a set up where she would be the one to call, no sooner than they had arrived at LaBonita, that her dad had taken a turn for the worse and Nata had better return asap. What Augie has in store is probably worse. A kidnapping, maybe? Hmmm, he should remember that that didn't work out too well for Dr. GivingUstheStinkShoes. Laz to the rescue, please.

Vivi--Fina's trail works, too, haha. She's left a long one behind her. This is probably where she's going to throw her crazy scene.

Adri says she'll break up with Matias if he doesn't go along with her plan????? Come on, Chema's a big boy, even if she has to tell him that they are not novios, they can be friends--she and Mat together. But, you know what? I don't really care.

Whats-his-guts is Diego, Roberta's conspirator in the porno leaflet campaign to dishonor Renata at Matias' homecoming party. Not too shabby in daylight, well, tall anyway.

Carlos--...christening the desk...they gave us TMI. Poor Marina, if that's all she's going to have to remember her night of love-making. Even the tree was more romantic for Nata.
NOK

Hey! They went back to the old opening sequence last night. What was up with that? Will we ever see the new one again?

What a great and funny title Julia. I had forgotten you were recapping and thought," Wow, Cheryl's really got an edge this time." Then I hit the end and realized it was just my sassy old teammate Julia, doing her sardonic and hilarious usual.

My favorite line was about dear Adriana reassuring Matias she was "with him" while heading home to her own cozy shower and bed. Can't blame her though. That's certainly what I would want to do under similar circumstances.

It's always at this point in a telenovela when I wonder why!?...knowing that there are going to be more heart-wrenching moments before the happily every after ending.

But that pales in comparison to the sad real-life story of the missing baby and the murdered mother. The evil that men do in the name of love indeed. Humankind still has a long way to go.

Thanks Julia. You're witty and wicked...but in a good way.

Hi, Julia! Thank you so much in advance. Haven't read what I'm sure is going to be a wonderful cap. . .I'm just reacting, half way through my recording. I know a lot of you have fond (not so distant) memories of ENDA but for those of us who didn't watch it, this flashback to a whole different novela is annoying. I guess it's a new way to stretch out the story. . .maybe while it was being filmed this gave the actors some time off? Guess it also serves as a commercial "and stay tuned for our other fine stories of lies, lust, kidnapping and familial homicide. . " Okay. Back to the show.

Lila

Diego. I couldn't remember the character's name...kept thinking Vicente but I knew that was in CCEA.

On the one hand, I kind of agree with Adri. Breaking up with Mat wouldn't really be about Chema, I think, but about whether Matías trusts her and supports her. We've definitely seen before that he has some issues on that front. On the other hand, I think her plan is terrible and part of being a good partner is not enabling the other's poor choices.

A good response from Mat would be to discuss that it's entirely possible Chema will find out she's lying to him and be more hurt, that it's unfair for him to not know what is wrong with him and be able to do any last-wishes type things he may want to do, and that her plan of pretending to date Chema while hiding her relationship with Matías basically puts her in the position of hoping on some level for Chema's quick demise so she can get back to her "real" life.

She'd do better to be honest and support him as a friend. Maybe the bad news part of his brain is tumor-choked, but if he saw her with Matías enough and not acting like his own girlfriend he'd probably get it.

I hope Gitana kicks Augie in the snoot. This wedding is shaping up to be a doozy.

So I see that Jero, didn't mention to the Bishop in his interview, that he got the good doctor tatas preggers?

Oh and Julia thank you for the wonderful recap.

Wondering if poor Chema, will ever find out he's dying of that brain tumor? I think they should have told him that he's sick. instead of letting him wonder what's going on, b/c sooner or later he is going on notice things are not right with him.

Will Auggie do something to Gitana and frame Jero?

Will Marina disappear into the night (which is what I think she's going to do)? And speaking of Marina. I get it. She's pregnant by a man she loves who doesn't love her. She's all hormonal. But she's also a doctor. People depend on her to be strong. To be someone they can lean on. She needs to start womaning up.

Great recap Julia.

Robey

Robey:
I agree with you—I am so worried about that horse! And, Marina disappearing with the child would be a great set-up for a sequel telenovela. Do they ever do that?

You can see the set up, little Diego comes back, aged and angry and ready to wreck havoc on his/her sibs and Jero.

This upcoming wedding is a nail baiter for sure.

Julia, my what a fun and thoroughly enjoyable recap! I'd end up copying and pasting half the recap to acknowledge all the funny/witty parts! Big fun! Hopefully, we'll move on this week after being totally reminded of all the murder, mayhem, misunderstandings, deceptions, remorse and forgiveness. Love will find a way! Some storylines are dumb and novella-y but that's what we can expect: Marina with her totally self-made problem. . .love your playing doctor quip! And Adriana playing psychiatrist and hospice worker to Chema. His Dad needs to tell him and stand by his side now that they've made up. Let Chema die with the truth, not the lie that everything is peachy-keen and Adri is in love with him. . .oh well. Way past tired of Pusbucket. . .he probably will kidnap Kari from the wedding and hold her for several days, slobbering all over her. . .get ready: they seem to want to disgust and anger us right to the end. Thanks again, Julia. Love it!

Lila

OK, One more thing. I really don't like the lying to Chema for his own good nonsense. Chema is an adult and Adri is in love with someone else with who she has plans. Period.

I know Chema cannot understane (selective memory loss, as my amigo Carlos points out) that he is sick or that Adri is not his novia.

What matters here is that Adri be truthful with herself, Matias and Chema. Is she, perhaps, still a little ambivalent about her choice for tantrum throwing Matias? Is Matias perhaps intuitive enough to sense Adri's connection to Chema and thus feel jealousy?

Just thinkin' outloud here...

Howdy all, Emilia and I are indeed back in Yorktown. Wonderful trip. I'll try to put a few notes and photos on Facebook or wherever. Suffice it to say that Cheryl is a wonderful guide to northern New Mexico, which, in itself, is a wonderful place.

Anyway...

Julia, it's so good of you to fill in for Cheryl while she's in Oaxaca and so good to see an Authentic Julia Brand Recap again!

We watched the previous week's tape but read all the recaps - thanks again to ALL OF YOU!! for posting them. Looks like we missed some significant episodes.

The Gonzalo walking into the light sequence was pretty amazing. Carlos, fellow reformed tobacco-holic, do you suppose we'll be able to light up again in the Great Hereafter? Don't think I'd do cigarettes, but the occasional cigar might be nice.

We missed the prison latrine part, so I can't answer, Carlos, your question about a Mexican prison facility being worse than the San Angelo Enco Station ladies room.

I'm numb to the idea of redemption for Fina or Roberta. Roberta does seem to have a knack for sniveling, though. Ditto Marina. What's the female saying about "big girl panties?" Jeez, she was one of my favorite characters and they've twisted her into something rather weak.

Enough for now. Good to be back and watching CME in real time again.

Y... Feliz Dia de los Muertos, y'all!

I'm getting kinda scared. I'm a TN newbie, pretty much. I don't know if this is a regular thing, but the last TN I watched killed off a major character.

Robey

Well...brace yourself, Robey. I haven't seen spoilers and have no idea what will happen on this one (and of course wouldn't say anything if I had), but even the more comedic novelas can rack up a pretty high body count, and this isn't a comedy.

So far we've been lucky in that most of the fatalities have been characters we didn't have time to get attached to because it was so early in the show, or didn't care about much because they were minor. I think things could get very grim before everything's all better.

But they'd better not kill off my favorites!

Julia, who are your favorites?

Robey

I don't want to jinx them!

...but if Carlos, Mati, Adri, Lazaro, or Gitana dies, I will be MUY upset. I've already resigned myself to Chema's departure.

I like your favorites, too, though it took me awhile to warm up to Mati. Of course, I also like Nata. I liked Marina a lot until she went all weepy. I'm beginning to like Selene. However, I doubt that Selene--and of course--Nata are in danger. Though--wasn't there a TN where the heroine died at the end?!

Robey

Robey, that was the case in the novel "Justine" by the Marquis de Sade. TNs borrow liberally from the classics.

Mike: Heard of MdS, of course. Don't know much about him except the obvious. Didn't realize he was an author. Thanks for the info. Wikipedia here I come.

Robey

Had forgotten the movie Quills, which I saw ages ago, was about MdS.

Robey

Sorry to be silent today, one of those hellishly busy days.

I will really be ticked off if something bad happens to Gitana. I wouldn't put it past Augustin, the slime bag.

I also agree with Michele and others that Chema should be told the truth! Sheesh, I don't see how lies can help him. And his dad who has been absent from Chema's life is making this call? Double Sheesh. I can't believe Coni and Adri would go along with this asinine decision.

OK, I am off to watch tonight's episode...

Hey- Has anyone seen/heard from Jules in the past week? I'm getting worried.

Jules- If you're out there, let us know you're ok.

Shall I put up a discussion header?

Vivi, we haven't heard from Jules in a couple of weeks since her last post. I hope she's OK too. She usually posts her recaps about noon Pacific time. Maybe wait 2-3 hours to see if she posts if that's not to inconvenient for you?

I just quickly wrote up a from memory recap. I have a meeting in about an hour and a half. If nothing is up by then, I'll publish the draft.

And in the meantime I will scoot in here and give a big thank you to Julia. Now I see why your re-cap was highly awaited. You are talented, amiga!

Your rats paragraph was brilliant. I text it over to my daughter, like I do a lot of the off-beat things we all say, and she read it to people at her work and they all laughed too. Your spit shined toilet comment has reached many people!

So they reverted back to the new intro last night, and I noticed (once Sylvia pointed it out) that Roberta is not in there at all (except for that parting family portrait)! What does that mean? How can they put in Areli, but not Roberta? That girl can't catch a break when it comes to anyone liking her.

Word verification: Tally, as in how many murdered people is Fina up to as yet?
