Una Familia Con Suerte #43 Tue 12/6/11 Pancho learns why the Japanese are so skinny

We see a continuation of last night's almost-kiss, followed by a cute discussion where Pancho tells Rebe that *his* heart is *never* confused.

Tonight's episode opens with Ana (Pancho's accordion-playing daughter) greeting the band-members as they come in for rehearsal. They all seem to have crushes on her, bringing her stuff and joking around, and they actually names and lines. Danger, Will Robinson: this is a sign of an oncoming new subplot! The keyboardist, Manuel, gives her a weird-looking dulce de leche (it kinda looks like a lot of colorful toy blocks in a tupperware, but what the hell... it's the thought that counts!) and swiftly departs. The band realize that no one has ever even heard about his family, and they met him at a bus stop (I think).

Pina barges into Vins' office dressed in a black-and-grey ensemble with shiny details that makes me think of the morality police from some dystopian sci-fi flick. She has just come to inform him that the Pomeranian has peed in the house and needs psychotherapy, but notices the bag on his desk (the $3000 bag that Candi refused). What bag?, Vins asks. Cornered, he claims it was a gift for his secretary. She wonders if he'd been sleeping with the secretary, too, so he says it was on sale and it was her birthday (both lies). Pina puts the question to the secretary (is it your Birthday), but Vins is able to convey the lie to her in sign language from behind Pina's back and she plays along.

Pina and Vins bring the pooch to the psyciatrist's. They have a huge fight about sex in the waiting room, and the doc walks in as they're both saying "sex sex sex sex sex." He is astonished that they could expose such a delicate creature to such "indiscretion" and lack of recato (decency) and is quite cross with them. Vins explodes with complaints about his stressful life. Business sucks, my dog is unhappy, and my wife is paranoid! PLEEEASE doc, you gotta help me!

Fernanda is seeing doctor Octavio, who isn't pleased that she ran off to Germany. He reveals that Fer asked him to find her some private eyes for an as-yet-undisclosed matter. The safe bet is that these PIs are to find her long-lost son who will turn out to be Pancho, but we'll see.

Back at the office, we're treated to another vocal thought-bubble as Rebe goes over her conflict... I have feelings for Pancho.... But it's wrong... But he's so attractive! Meanwhile, Pancho is wiping his nose.

[I had to step out for a bit to sell something to a guy from craigslist... this is from my mom's notes]

Some more with the rich kids and the nacos. Candi likes the mix tape Alex made for Lupe. Pepe decides that he will conquer Monica before Freddy can win her back.

Dinner with Pina, Vins, and Freddy. Freddy tells them his theory on marriage, specifically that it was invented when people lived 30 years, and that's too much time to be with anybody. Vins is kind of unhappy to think of how long he'll be married to Pina and looks a little sick.

Pancho goes to Rebe's for Sushi training. She is dressed as a geisha. Eww. He's excited about wasabi, though. "Oooh, chiles!"

[I'm back]

Rebe really does look awful. Pancho amusingly struggles with the chopsticks, but has no trouble with the sake. "The poor get drunk, but the rich get happy." He flips out at the notion of eating rice ("how do they eat? That must be why they're so skinny and yellow") with chopsticks and would prefer to sit on the couch with Rebeca and inch in closer to her...

Meanwhile, Elena is still gushing at Lupe about going to Brazil with a "sabrosito" like Freddy. Lupe wonders where she'll sleep. Tomas overhears this all and they have a huge fight. Over his dead body, he says. But where was this protectiveness back when mom died, she asks. Nothing is resolved.

Chela is praying at the altar of her sister, which is kind of sweet in a boring way for a little bit, but then she picks this inopportune moment to badmouth Rebeca, and it starts to seem a little creepy.

Gossip in the mall with Candi and co., at least until the secretary shows up with the fancy bag. They have a funny fight where Candi tries to insist it's hers until she admits she refused it and thew it on the ground. That puffs the wind right out of her sails.

Vins and Pina are in bed. Vins is mumbling in his sleep, and Pina thinks he's finally telling her he loves her. At least until he blurts out "oh Candi." She tries to smother him with the pillow and a goofy red fuzzy circle flashes on her face (special effects! woo!) as her eyes roll in opposing directions and her mouth makes a perfect "o" shape. He pretends he was having a nightmare about the Lopez family. They're like Chinese torture to me, he protests.

Again, we go out an an almost-kiss (P&R). Only this time, she admits that she has feelings for him, and they *both* pucker up. At the last second, her phone rings and she answers it. Oh, she tells Pancho quite nonchalantly, that's Mike, my boyfriend in the U.S..

Thank you so much Ezra for the quick recap. That scene of Vins sleeping and talking in his sleep reminds me of the song "You've Been Talking in Your Sleep", by Chrystal Gale back in the day. Even the lyrics fit lol. I like how Kari is helping Monica with Pepe.I just knew she would. She told him all about Freddy trying to get Monica back. I can't wait to see what Pepe does. Oh, Pacho and Becky, that kiss will be a long time coming I think , now that he knows about her boyfriend in the States. I wonder how come she never mentioned him before?
And Pina with the red face, lol. She looked like the devil, all that was missing was smoke coming out of her ears. Lol.

Ezra and Melinama- I love the team/family effort! It was a seamless recap.

I really like Monica. She reminds me of another sweet fresa-- Ximena from Gancho.

I'm not sure why Rebe felt the need to dress up like a geisha. Are they actually going to take the Japanese investors to a Japanese restuarant? So why the food lesson? It would have been better to teach Pancho about their customs of courtesy. I can already see the bowing jokes and antics.

I don't believe this boyfriend thing for one minute. I'm sure it's Barbara in the other line. She just wants to keep Pancho at a distance.

Thanks Ez. I love the way Daniela Castro is playing Pina - on the edge between annoying and adorable. Actually all the bad guys are that way which is why I think they are ALL going to be rehabilitated by the end (which won't be for more than a year! so expect more random sub-plots!) and everybody will form one happy family.

Thanks, Ezra! Your "Danger, Will Robinson! Oncoming subplot!" line is really funny.

Oy, dressing like a geisha and eating sushi to prepare for the Japanese investors. I'm with Vivi...their time would be much better spent discussing how to greet the visitors, topics and mannerisms to avoid, how to make sure the Japanese businessmen feel respected and no one "loses face," etc. No one expects the Mexican Avon people to pretend to be Japanese! That's ridiculous! Ah, well, that's an absurd comedy for you. And I do like that there is no one truly evil and menacing on this show; it's a nice break.

So Ana is finally getting more to do than play accordian and swoon about Freddy. Yay. We barely know these band dudes but already I'm sure any one of them is a better pick.

Words o' the day:

de chunga - as a joke

chungo/a - out of sorts, in bad shape

jalonear - to tug

estar en el hoyo - to be in the depths of despair

batear de jonrón - to hit a homerun. But, Pepe said this is what Moni did to him, so it must not have quite the same connotation it has here...

mandar a la goma - to send packing

echar de cabeza - to betray

sacar de las greñas - to drag someone someplace they don't want to go

Tks so much to to Ez & Mel

Probably concentrating on sushi instead of customs will lead
to many laughs & Pancho endearing himself to the Japanese. No pretenses with Pancho. He won over the Arabs being himself.

I don't believe Rebeca has a novio either, I think that was even discussed with Barbara.

Do we know how old the younger characters are? Lupita and Ana are still in prepa, right? But Freddy, Alex, and Monica are in university? And they all eat at the same cafeteria? And Pepe and Tomas are a bit older? Elena is no longer in school, but about how old?

I missed the first few weeks of the show so I'm a little confused by some of these things, like why Lupita was even talking about marriage when she's so young (though that certainly isn't unheard of in telenovelas). Or, for example, is Tomas actually Elena's guardian, or just an overbearing control-freak brother (without a leg to stand on when he's lecturing her about moral behavior)?

Ezra and Melinama, gracias for the fun recap.

ITA that there is no "Mike" but I wonder how long Rebe will keep up this ruse. Tomas is a hypocrite of course, but I like that he's on Elena's case.

Julia,
I do know Lupita is 17 because I heard Pancho say so on a back cap. And Pepe is 20. That was mentioned also. The kid is 8. Laurita died having him and they said that was 8 years ago. The show started in 1990 with the wedding of Pancho and Laurita. Pepe born in 1991 makes him 20.

Therefore I'm guessing Ana is younger than Lupita since Lupita is the first girl to have a novio. Ana has just realized men with her crush on Freddy. Now if a Quinciñera is mentioned she'll be 15, but she might be 16 or gads even 14!

Elena and Lupita have been friends since childhood so I'm guessing she is 17 also.

Tomás I'm guessing is 22 like Freddy and Alex. Seems like in Mexico a 22 year old is the right age for a 17 year old!

Monica must be 20 like Pepe.

Okay, that's my guesses. Jajajaja
