El Mundo de Telemundo, week of January 16, 2012: Discuss Amongst Yourselves!
In the beginning. this show was delicious. There was so much nervous energy, so much sly malice, so many people we loved to hate. It was great fun trying to guess what crazy secrets would be revealed from one night to the next. And then there were the stylized and stylish sets, each one with its own story to tell. Now, with Relaciones peligrosas slated to begin on January 24, we Caseros are feeling stuffed. The meal should have ended hours ago but they just keep serving new courses, anything to keep the Dish Latino full.
I for one am ready to retire to the study for cognac, cigars and a dénouement worthy of Hercule Poirot.
---------------------------------------
Let’s take a look at Friday’s episode. Apparently it’s not quite time to break out the brandy snifters. Sigh.
Et tu Pilar?
Gonzaki sees the microphone in Pilar's jacket and realizes that she has tricked him into confessing. She has betrayed him! He allows her and her children to get out of the car; and then he drives off, completely shattered.
McJustice is served
Emilio delivers the recording of Gonzo’s confession to Javier. In record time, Javier obtains a court order for Carola’s immediate release from prison. A warrant is issued for Gonzalo’s arrest. His apartment swarms with uniformed cops; another team raids the house he co-opted in the country.
Meanwhile, Carola pays a visit to Renato’s grave. So many things were left unsaid between them; her father died disappointed in her for a crime she didn’t commit. She vows that Gonzaki will pay!
She finally makes her way back to the Conde apartment and into Eva’s welcoming embrace. But she’s there only briefly – she has to go to Pilar’s house to thank her personally for everything she has done for her.
Nibaldo brings Rebeca to her sister’s house where, at last, she is comfortably ensconced in smooth linens, her head propped on a soft white pillow. Everyone is thrilled to see she has made some progress towards recovery -- now she is moving her arms and saying more words -- despite the neglect verging on torture she has suffered over the last several months.
Rebeca struggles to tell them about Gonzalo but Pilar explains that the Mora brothers' secret is out and the police know all about it. Pilar also reveals the existence of her own evil twin, Raquel, and the deaths she has caused -- including the loss that seems to affect Rebeca the most -- that of Renato Conde. Finally, Nibaldo, Hilda and the kids leave Pilar, Cecilia and Rebeca alone so they can talk.
Diego and Andrea wander nervously downstairs. They are even more spooked when they notice the front door is ajar. Apparently they still haven’t posted the “No solicitors or murderers” sign
because we see the shadow, the black shoes and trousers ... the peri-homicidal tilt of the head. It’s Gonzalo and he’s out for blood.
Comic Relief No One is In The Mood For
Karen, gotten up in a black spangly figure-hugging tux cum leotard and towering stilettos, shows up on Eva’s doorstep. She turns on her boombox and wiggles her assets, as large as Michoacán. She has heard that Eva is in the star-making business, it seems. If Nibaldo, then why not Karen? Eva finally gets her to leave by saying she can't make any promises but she'll see what she can do. Karen takes that as a firm commitment -- she's on her way to the top!
Is Javier becoming a mensch? He is modest about his contribution to Carola’s release – all he did was deliver the judicial papers -- and generous in giving credit to Pilar and Emilio. Everyone is struck by how much he seems to have changed.
Cecilia’s heart is as black as her eyeliner
When she is alone with Pilar and Rebeca, she finally spills the beans about why she gave Raquel away. It was all Rebeca’s mother’s fault! The bitch expected alimony and child support! It’s expensive enough to raise one child but when Ceci found she was expecting twins ... well! That’s when her cleaning lady gave her the idea of giving one of the babies away ...
Pilar’s cell phone sounds and she walks out of the room to take the call.
Rebeca is left alone with Ceci. She has no choice but to listen to this self-serving tale in stony silence.
The Night is Crawling with Monsters
Pilar recognizes the call is from Gonzalo ... but why doesn’t he say anything? She doesn’t realize he is standing right behind her. Holding a gun. He raises it and aims ... but quickly ducks out of sight when Cecilia, guessing that the call is from Gonzo, comes downstairs after Pilar.
Gonzaki listens as Pilar tells Cecilia how she feels: It broke her heart to see his pain -- and his pain was very real -- when he understood that she had betrayed him. His face crumples and he snot-cries.
Pilar heads over to la casa de al lado to thank Javier for bringing Rebeca back to her and getting Carola out of jail. (Interestingly, she’s talking like Pilar but she’s dressed kind of Raquelishly – tight red pants, sparkly gold top, big hoop earrings.)
Gonzaki follows her out and watches through the wrought-iron fence de al lado. He sees Pilar enter and then, a moment later, sees Javier go inside. Luckily he can’t hear Pilar tell Javier he has turned into the man she fell in love with so many years ago – ¡Qué bueno encontrarme con él una vez más! (How good it is to meet up with him again!)
Adolfael is on the move
He has nothing against Cecilia and he kind of likes Pilar. But Raquel wants him to bring her Cecilia so that’s what he’ll do. Cuz he and Raquel, they're a team.
Ceci is pouring herself a drink when she hears a door open. Is Pilar back already? She’s surprised to find the door wide open. Aha! It’s that bastard, Gonzalo! Show your face or I’m calling the police, says our booze-emboldened Cecilia.
Adolfael has heard enough. Blah blah blah, he mocks in disgust. No soy Gonzalo – soy su hermano, he says, as he presses his gun into the back of her neck. But wait! Carola Conde is on her way to the Casa Ruiz! Will she be Cecilia’s salvation?

Fans of Una Maid and Flor -- your turn!
Labels: casa-lado, flor-salvaje, maid, telemundo
Just a quickie recapette- Most of the episode featured Zahra's wedding during which Abel began to execute his plan of vengeance. Most of the cast was present at the ceremony except Rafa, of course, who is in prison and Ines, her mother and Frigida, of whom more later. Rocío was there sans bandages and she didn't exhibit any scarring around her eyes as you might expect from someone who was blinded by chemicals.
Zahra is nervous as a cat because Abel was present but the ceremony goes off without a problem. Immediately afterwards, however, the newlyweds are presented with a gift, which when opened, turns out to be an enlargement of a picture of Zahra's mother and Abel as a child. Zahra faints.
When Zahra recovers, she tells Francisco her story, most of which we already know. The part we didn't know was that when her pregnancy started to show, she pretended her mother was ill and went to visit her and gave birth there. She left the baby with her mother and visited once a year but naturally, she couldn't provide the mother's love that a child needs. Later, as we know, she was told that her son was dead. Zahra tells Olga that she told Francisco everything except the fact that she thinks that her son is not dead and is in NE.
During the wedding, Abel's henchman goes to the prison, distracts the guard and puts a sedative in the beverage that came with Rafa's and the guard's dinner. When they are both asleep, he goes into Rafa's cell and puts a gun into Rafa's hand.
Frigida, Ines and her mother whose name I forget, are lamenting that JM won't set a date to marry Ines and is at the wedding where Rocío will be also. The two mothers wish that Ines had had sex with JM so that she could pretend to be pregnant (you had to see this one coming - how is she going to pretend to be pregnant when her fiancé is a doctor?). Ines finally realizes that her mother's preaching against sin is hypocritical and admits that she did have sex with JM.
Abelardo and Johnny do something with the drugs - I wasn't paying attention.
Abel is alone with Francisco after the wedding. He tells Francisco that Zahra is his mother and that he is going to make his parents unhappy because he has never been happy (wow, I've never heard that one before ;-) ) Then he pulls a gun and holds it to Francisco's head. The credits roll.
So clearly his plan is to kill Francisco and put the blame on Rafa. I guess they don't do ballistics testing in NE because it won't be the same gun that was left with Rafa and why would Rafa go back to prison with the gun after killing Francisco? I think Abel will kill Francisco because if he doesn't, Francisco knows the secret. Poor Zahra.
Great recap, NovelaMaven. I never thought the show was delicious, but it did keep me watching. "stuffed caseros indeed. It's SO annoying. If the show's crap, it's over in a reasonable time. If it registers lower on the BS meter and people tune in, they throw stuff at the wall in the last couple of months, dragging it on and on.
Yep, that was one dizzyingly fast discovery of the truth and Carola Conde on the street. Must have been because of "the best lawyer in the country". Except he modestly says he did very little.
And that scene with Karen was just atrocious.
Oh well, another week of twists yet to come. How many people have been kidnapped and tied up in a cellar, warehouse, or apartment by now? Renato, Nibaldo, Rebeca, Igor Mora, Ignacia, and Pilar. Have I missed anyone?
Thanks for the recap, Jean. Such a sad, sad episode. And you noticed the holes in Abel's plan that I hadn't even thought of. Why WOULD Rafa kill Francisco and go back to jail. Well, if you make your head ache thinking about it, maybe Abel's plan was to have Rafa blamed and, being such a smart little thug, he would know Rafa was going to jail to win Flor's love and THAT'S why he went back.
What I think was going on with Johnny and Abelardo is this: Abel bought lands and, presumably there was some kind of structure on them. They're setting up a coca processing operation in the back, bringing their cocineros from somewhere else. But the front of the place is going to sell coffee or give out coffee to the workers (¿Qué?) to hide the smell of the chemicals.
Sacto continues to brood at the wedding. When Roberto Manrique gives one of his 100 megawatt smiles about once a month in this thing, it's SUCH a relief. He scolds Cat for coming to the wedding with Mariano. And then asks her if maybe the baby is Mariano's. Whoa!
The mother of Ines is Caridad. What a cartoon that woman is!
I'm hoping this novela is different enough and clever enough to have the three witches' plan to entrap José María into marriage fall flat. Surely, he's going to demand an examination and pregnancy test?
I did have one wrong idea about where Abel was as an adolescent. I heard internado and thought it was a reform school. From context last night I gathered that it's a school, probably a good one, paid for by Zahra.
I'm pretty sure Rafa is going to figure this puzzle out, but there's not too much I can see that he can do about it. Unless he sics Rufino on Abel.
no matter how the show is, your recaps are always great NovelaMaven.
"Carola's father died disappointed in her for a crime she didn’t commit. She vows that Gonzaki will pay!"
but they have nothing to do with the one who has killed their father & sister!!
"Javier obtains a court order for Carola’s immediate release from prison"
United States of Telenovela!
instead of the "Comic Relief No One is In The Mood For" they could have focused on Gonzo and Pilar's complicated feelings. it would have given depth to our story of La Bella y la Bestia.
Things that never change:
1. The completely uselessness of the police in this show.
2. The door to the Ruiz house, which is mysteriously open at least once every 3 episodes (twice last night).
3. NovelaMaven's excellent recaps.
I really enjoy this show, although I do agree with all the criticisms, too. I don't like Cecilia one bit. and her blaming Rebeca's mother were pretty lame. But what would really be ironic is that instead of Carola's saving Cecelia, she accidentally gets killed by Adolfomael, on her first day out of jail. Please, no!
For about 5 minutes, the show was sweet and happy. Carola was out, people were hugging, and you could almost end the show. Except for the 3 serial killers still on the loose.
The actress playing Karen is probably having the time of her life in this silly role. And she even did a split!
Hugo confronts Belinda in her workplace, but Belinda is firm. Their marriage is over, he should move out all his stuff, and give her the key. After they part, she thinks things are okay. But he vows to himself that MARISA will pay for this!
Ty is disappointed that Amelia sort of lied about Marisa's being in the room. She comes back with the fact that he hid Marisa's working for him. Later, Ty takes a turn for the worse. He needs a triple bypass!
Jerome's tryout impresses the "scout" watching the game. Jerome thinks he's just about in the NBA. But the scout was just a regular guy being PAID by Stan to pretend to be a scout!
Gojo asks Kali (that's how it's spelled on her bar/restaurant) how can she work with Stan, when she knows he's scum. She just says, no matter how ugly things get, trust me.
Mireya questions Joaquin about not paying the kids, but making them play so many concerts, and keeping the money for the program. His response "Who's the boss? Me!" He then says he can't go out to dinner with her, since he has another commitment (he obviously hasn't really split from his wife).
Sara is going to team up with Catalina to do some plan to dump on Marisa some more.
Carmen tells Cris that Marisa came to the house to help Carmen when she was feeling faint. Rather than being seen as something good, this may come out as another time Marisa gets blamed for going where someone of her "class" can't go (to a rich person's house).
Yaya was a little mean to Marisa, but I forgive her because I liked her cute outfit. :)
Yes, an internado is a boarding school. I learned that by watching the truly awful 2006 Univisión novela, Barreras de Amor, part of which took place in a boarding school in Canada.
Thank you so much to all of the recappers. I've been reading Flor Salvaje for awhile here and have been promising to send my words of encouragement to you all THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU!!.
Today I must also ask for your help. Can anyone out there tell me the title or the singer of this song? It's a song they especially used to play when Zahra was lamenting over RU. I must have this song. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you
Welcome DoctoraLisa and thanks for the nice words. A little checking on the internet revealed that there is an album on iTunes of much of the music used on Flor Salvaje. It is called 'Flor Salvaje,' no surprise there and the music was written by someone name Marco Flores and sung by someone named Eli. I don't know if the music you are interested in is on the album but it probably is. Check it out and thanks for giving me the opportunity to find it. I like a couple of the songs on the novela.
Hombre, one cannot discount the importance of wardrobe--It is so much easier to overlook bad behavior in ladies who are dressed attractively!
:o)
Well, I thought Victor had turned over a new leaf when he rescued Lety, but apparently not. Too bad; there's nothing more charming than a redeemed bad-boy.
J in Oregon
I was in Manhattan this weekend, and let me tell you, it was COLLLDD! I didn't see too many people playing basketball with their arms exposed, or women in tight shorts and high heels. Good thing they shoot the show in Miami!
She’s grateful but she’s not crazy:
Outside the Big House, Pilar is taking leave of Javier, telling him that she’s grateful for his help but there’s no way in hell they are ever getting back together again. Gonzalo, meanwhile, lurks behind the wrought iron fence. He takes aim. He fires. And Javier falls to the ground. His face ashen, he calls Ignacia’s name.
It is Spirit Ignacia, bangles and all, who, when the defibrillators have failed, sends Javier back to the world of the living. A true miracle. Especially since his doctor can’t distinguish a gunshot wound to the gut from an accident.
Ig’s making the rounds tonight. Emilio also gets a ghostly visit – photos fall, a glass overturns. He feels a presence, a chill ... spooky music plays.
Meh.
They play hot potato with a loaded gun:
Inside the Ruiz house, Ismael has been holding Cecilia at gunpoint. He is startled by Carola’s arrival. Then all three hear the shot fired outside.
Ismael is caught off-balance. Ceci conks him over the head with a vase and runs upstairs to check on the children. Now Carola points the gun at Ismael and is ready to squeeze the trigger when ...
Karen bursts in to say that Javier has been shot!
Now Ismael knocks Carola off her pins, recovers the gun, fires into the air and runs off. Gonzalo, in his car, tracks him back to the hiding place where Raquel is waiting.
Ismael is furious at himself for failing to bring back Cecilia. And Raquel is
not amused. And neither one is she pleased when they see that Iñaki has joined them.
Raquel grudgingly permits Iñaki to stay the night even though she doesn’t see how they can be allies. After all, her aim is to destroy Pilar, to make her suffer. Is he on board with that? Well, take a load off for now, she tells him. Tomorrow she’ll put him to the test.
Ismael, meanwhile, seethes. He has caught sight of Raquel casually ruffling sleeping Iñaki’s hair. Now Iñaki is awake and asking for Raquel. She’s NOT Pilar, he reminds big brother, even though she looks like her.
The test:
Raquel puts on a Pilar disguise (knee-length pleated skirt and loosely fitting blue blouse) and heads out to the Ruiz house where she snatches Andrea, practically dragging her to the car, telling her she is taking her to see her father. By the time Andrea realizes she is in the clutches of the evil twin, well, she’s in the clutches of the evil twin. Will Iñaki get his props by harming Pilar’s child?
Nibaldo’s on his way to the top:
Emilio’s website is up and his Nibs gets his first client. Eva (who’ll be living on 10% of his take) and Yolanda head out to the venue to negociate a better fee. Karen, who must have followed the women, watches slyly. I guess she’s planning to upstage him. Snore.
Cecilia sets Rebeca up in a wheelchair and promises to take good care of her. She’s sorry she said what she did about her mother (even though it was true); in the end, she, Cecilia made the decision to separate her twins. (Poor Rebeca. She just can’t get a break, can she?)
And finally, in what threatens to be leading to a really crappy ending for this show:
Cecilia, alone in Pilar’s bedroom, is heard talking on the phone to SOMEONE. When will I have the new book in my hands? she asks. Tonight or tomorrow? Perfect! And remember, we don’t know each other and we’ve never had this conversation? Capeesh?
Thanks, NovelaMaven. Yes, this show seems to be falling apart, especially with Cecilia's revelation at the end. Now SHE's some kind of evil character, involved with the books?? Please.
Once again, the police were useless. Once again, the Ruiz door was left open. Hmmm.
Emilio's scenes were funny, with him typing away at top speed to make that website (just like the old movies, which had computer geniuses typing code in at high speed to show how brilliant they were). He never uses the pointer or touch pad at all. Then we have the little items falling, the sound of breath, and so much for any scientific basis on this show. This is confirmed with Carola and Ignacia's bangle she found in the prison cell.
How nice of Ignacia's ghost to tell Javier it wasn't his time. I, for one, was hoping it WAS his time. And the helpful nurse, who before Ignacia did her magic said "we've lost the patient", after the magic said "the patient has been saved". The bewildered doctor (probably related to some of the bewildered police) could only stare in stupefaction.
In order to save money (or maybe to make a really deep psychological point, you decide), Pilar and Raquel now have the exact same hair style. And it's not too easy a style to arrange. Give that Raquel some credit.
We now have the 3 serial killers together. But can any of them trust the others? Pilar at least has a goal. But Adolfo and Gonzalo?
I think the writers heard some complaints about the skimpy outfits when it's supposed to be in New York, because Lucas, wearing a heavy sweater, says to Tito, have some tea, I know it's really cold out. Okay, I'm convinced.
Hugo gets a bit rough with Marisa, but Gojo comes to the rescue. He wants to take action, but Marisa is still hoping Hugo will be reasonable. Right.
And some of us are hoping that Victor can change, but he's not helping his case. He's drinking, and arrives late for work. At work, he almost gets Lety in trouble with his advances, then steals 5 liquor miniatures from the room of an older couple (who were "coupling"). He misses the goodbye to Lalo, who's now off on tour.
Lety's also not being too bright. She keeps putting off Victor since he's her friend's ex, but she has a one night stand with some random guy, tells him it's just recreational sex, and can I call you Victor? The guy says whatever. Next day Lety tells Victor she has a novio. Right.
Sara pays Catalina $50,000 for the dvd of the interview where Cris offered to pay her to quash the story. Now the two can work together. Not really, as Sara tells Yaya she wants Catalina to end up in jail for attempted murder (I guess for the interview which caused Ty's heart attack). Yes, those two fancy ladies have their claws out.
Marcela WILL come to Kali's opening, but only grudgingly.
Cris wants Amelia to respect his feelings (about Marisa). Amelia says she'll respect them, but she doesn't agree with them.
Jerome tries to stand up to Stan, but can't.
Ty will have the bypass, but insists on meeting with Marisa first.
Kali's grand opening is coming up soon, and I predict lots of fireworks!
In order to save money (or maybe to make a really deep psychological point, you decide), Pilar and Raquel now have the exact same hair style. And it's not too easy a style to arrange. Give that Raquel some credit.
Jajaja! So true, Hombre.
First the Packers and now this, exactly what the show needed -- a spotlight on Cecilia! Not.
And now Andrea takes a turn at being the kidnapping victim. (I had forgotten that Diego had his turn earlier when Ricardo Merino was still kicking around).
It would be funny -- and would cement forever your genius at predicting insane plots -- if the person Cecilia was talking to turns out to be Sebastián The Undead. But WE know that Cecilia knows/knew Sebastián, so that's not possible. Right?
Abel appears to be enjoying killing Francisco. Before he does it, he toys with him a bit. He tells him he came from poverty. He started out taking drugs, which lifted him and gave him hallucinations. But he realized that if he wanted to be a millionaire, he had to give them up. He began selling and then distributing them. For some reason he takes off Francisco’s wedding ring. When Francisco tries the tack of telling him he might be caught, he brags that he has other deaths to his credit and no one has caught him. As we knew would happen, he does shoot him. Once the villain tells someone about his crimes the one listening is toast. After shooting him he gives us a psychopathic smile.
Filomena is carping on the sidelines, but she gives us a little preview of what may come. She asks if Francisco and Zahra have signed a separacíon de bienes (or prenup). A scary moment when Zahra, dripping sarcasm, tells her she wants Francisco to die to get his money.
Sacto and Cat continue their fight. Sacto has been so clumsy about trying to warn her off Mariano, that she hints she’ll go for him.
Rafa wakes up in his cell, feeling terrible. Quesada is trying to figure out what happened at the jail. Rafa says he doesn’t know what happened. Quesada tells him the cell was open when he came back from the wedding, the guard was asleep, and you had a gun in your hand. Rafa says this obviously was a trap. Check the food or drink for some substance that made us sleep. Then he really lays it on: “Yes, yes. I went and killed someone, returned to my cell, left it open, and went to sleep with the gun in my hand!” Quesada appears to see how crazy this seems. [This doesn't work for me either. If Abel is such a criminal mastermind, why wouldn't he realize how weird his plot appears?]
After instructing his bodyguard what to do with Francisco’s body, Abel returns to the party to put more moves on Flor. He asks her where she is, meaning her absent look. She tells him she’s in the cell with Rafael Urrieta. She tells him Zahra is looking for him and, by the way, where does he know Zahra from.
Flor finds Cat crying and tries to comfort her. Cat tells her that she thought Sacto and Flor had planned getting Rafael in jail in order to be together. Flor tells he she left Sacto because he’s much more than she is and she doesn’t deserve him. Cat says he’s stubborn and stupid. Flor responds that he’s a good man, and that she hopes he’ll realize you’re the right woman for him before it’s too late. Flor asks her to be patient. Sacramento doesn’t know how to love. He spent his life alone and ends up suffocating people with his mistrust.
Zahra confronts Abel. She says she knows who he is. He is Rafael Rios. He’s Rafael because of his father and Rios because that’s the only name she had to give him, her own. She tells him she thought he was dead. She tells Abel she knows he sent the portrait. He’s a man now, his face has changed, but the eyes are the same. He lays into her about having done him so much harm. Why didn’t she leave Nueva Esperanza or Rafael Urrieta? Zahra tells him that, thinking he was dead, her life was never the same. She never was Rafa’s woman again because she felt it was his fault she had lost her son. He replies he won’t ever believe this. He also says she continued to be a prostitute. She says she retired from that; ask anyone in town. He just smirks. It’s hard to imagine how hard his heart is to resist Zahra’s heartfelt pleading.
Flor approaches Sacto and tells him he should look after the mother of his child; she’s hurting. She asks him why he insists on destroying what he loves. He’s doing the same as he did with her. He responds that he only loved her. She asks if he’s forgotten the humiliations caused by his jealousy. He mulishly responds that it’s his way of loving. She tells him that, if he doesn’t wake up soon, he’ll lose them both.
Francisco’s body is discovered. Zahra is holding him and asking for a doctor, refusing to believe he’s already gone. Filomena is in tears, of course blaming Zahra for his death. In a sense she’s right. Not because of Zahra having been a prostitute, but because her evil son returned for revenge.
In the middle of all this, Alicia is going ahead with the fake big drug buy. She meets the pretend buyer in the 4P. [This is odd; she wanted drugs kept away from there. But I guess she knew everyone would be at the wedding.] El Asqueroso lives to insult people and nastily asks the guy’s name. This guy says he must be new at this; you never ask people’s names. He says he’s known Alicia for years, and why did she need to bring a bodyguard. Johnny bristles at this; he’s not a bodyguard for this perra. Abelardo calms things down. Johnny insists the guy take off his jacket and shirt to check for a wire and/or a gun. Nada. Alicia tells him this isn’t going to happen again. Johnny isn’t going to open his yap again. Johnny tries for the briefcase, but he’ll only give it to Alicia. Abelardo gives the drugs to the fake buyer.
CSI Nueva Esperanza examines the body. Mariano, who always forgets he’s the mayor and reverts to Top Cop, begins to question the witnesses. Filomena, of course, relates what Zahra said as if it were said seriously. Abel says he regrets the death of such a good man.
Rafael tells his lawyer from his cell that this was a trap laid for him.
tnx so much NovelaMaven
great points, Hombre.
I too was hoping it WAS Javier's time. I can't understand what that romanticism was for.
they are overusing a dead character's ghost while they don't know what to do with most of the remaining characters. Emilio, Eva, Hilda, Nibaldo, Rebeca, Yolanda and... have been off the subject mostly.
liked the scene of the 3 killers. Adomael's face was priceless when Raquel kissed Gonzo. I won't mind watching a new long telenovela with Gonzo & Adomael - without fillers of course :)
I have been half watching this, since it's between the 2 novelas I always watch. I have a question. Do we like Rafael now, or still hate him? Does Flor really like him, or is it still all a trick? Do we like Sacramento? Do we want Sacramento to end up with Catalina?
Thanks for the recap, Novelera. Poor Zahra. As Mina (I think) said, Zahra went from soltera to viuda in about one hour.
I noticed that there were white-coated crime scene investigators with Francisco's corpse. Maybe they will figure out that the bullet from the gun left with Rafa didn't fire the fatal bullet.
My opinion on your questions, Hombre, is that we like Rafa a little better and he certainly looks better in comparison with the new arch-villian, Abel. I think Flor is really in love with Rafa and regrets the trick she played on him that got him arrested.
I'm not sure we like Sacto anymore. He's not evil but his obsession with Flor is so annoying that he is pretty hard to take. I don't want him to end up with Catalina because that's what she wants and I don't like her.
tough questions Hombre,
here is my take,
Rafael is by far the toughest, most intelligent, and creative person in this story,
he is very disciplined, and lives by his own code.
you can't help but admire this guy,
but,
he has done some of the most horrendous, despicable, unforgivable things that anyone can do,
if you are going to like this guy,
you do so at your own risk,
Rafael convinced Flor that because of his love for her he would change,
and proved it by going along with Flor's trap,
by revealing Pablo's grave,
and he is now paying the price.
Flor was totally won over by this,
she now loves him unquestionably,
Sacramento, through an innocence that he has,
gets all of the girls,
but through his stubbornness, etc.,
he would be the worst person to ever marry,
he just suffocates people with his right and wrongs.
Catalina was part of a plan to kidnap Flor,
which left her near death,
and Rocio blind,
this hasn't been revealed,
so would this relationship work?
Thanks, Jean and Deb. This really helps, since I missed a lot of things. And thanks, Novelera, for another excellent recap.
Here's hoping I get to steal the phrase in one of my recaps. Srsly, cracked me up.
Jerome tells Stan he's not selling the steroids anymore. Jerome says then you'll go to jail for the ones you already sold. Jerome says I don't care. Stan says "for a long time". Jerome says, I don't care. Stan says "and we'll beat up Tania". Jerome sells the drugs.
Steve is in trouble for the report which caused Ty's heart attack. He tells Catalina, if I go down, so do you. Meanwhile, helpful Sara advises Tito that Cris and Ty should sue the news station.
Victor is drunk on duty, and Lety rescues him, barely avoiding detection by Belinda, then Amador. She then gives Victor a triple strength coffee, which gets rid of his drunkenness (I don't think this really works in real life).
At the grand opening of Kali's cafe, everything's going great. Marcela isn't too happy, but she's behaving herself. When introduced to Amador, she gets him to kiss her hand, then dance with her. Her rivalry with Calixta continues.
There's live musical entertainment, as a guitarist and his band do a snappy island flavored song. Stan shows up uninvited, but Kali stays above the fray, offers him champagne.
Tonight: The party continues.
This show is totally off the wheels, but oh well, the gran final is this coming Monday, so it will all be "resolved" :)
Wonderful Karen gets sleeping pills, puts them in Nibaldo's drink, he falls asleep in Javier's chair. She tells Yolanda he already left. When Nibaldo doesn't show up at the party to sing, Karen DOES, all dressed up to show she can save the day! Blech.
Carola has another in her series of famous "plans". Adolfo has texted her, so she'll text back to meet at Gonzalo's country house. And Cecilia will be the bait. Of course they don't call the police (not that that would help!).
Raquel has kidnapped Andrea and taken her to the hideout. Gonzalo's loyalty proof is to shoot the kid. He can't do it. Adolfo says I CAN, but before he does, Gonzo grabs the gun. He agrees to get the real Pilar, and exchange her for Andrea. He calls Pilar, who tells no one (and of course not the police), tells her to come to an address to get Andrea.
Pilar is briefly reunited with Rebeca, now in a wheelchair. Rebeca tries to get Pilar not to rush out after Gonzalo, but can't really do much in her current state. Pilar dutifully arrives where Andrea is, is reunited with her, and is ready to go when Gonzalo pulls out his gun and tells her no. Andrea goes free, but I had to promise Raquel to deliver you, so you can't go free.
Okay, I'm sure Pilar is fine with this, as she'd like to confront Raquel. But really! Why doesn't Gonzalo just kill Raquel? Almost no one even knows she exists. Or why does he have to honor his "promise" to Raquel? It's completely ridiculous.
But there was one hopeful event in last night's episode. You know how the bad guys are always listening in when the good guys reveal stuff? Well, last night, Cecilia is talking to some book publisher, says, yes deliver it tonight, and HILDA is in the doorway (in plain sight) listening in! She follows Cecilia outside, and when the book falls to the ground, Hilda is right there, and Cecilia is caught red-handed! (in something) :)
Hey Sara, nice to know that Hombre, Alex and I have company, now and then :)
Hombre, I appreciate your taking one for the team. I'm not sure I can face writing about this any more. Interestingly, though, as the writing deteriorates, the acting (especially on the part of the unholy trio)has become impressive (or at least to me). I liked the Pilar and Gonzaki scene and the Raquel/Ismael interplay was also well done.
Just to add to your excellent reprise of last night's show --
Iñaki can't bring himself to harm Pilar so he begs her to take the gun and shoot HIM. That way, Raquel will see that at least he TRIED to honor his absurd promise, even if he wasn't successful.
The gun goes off and, as usual, we'll have to wait until next time to see who -- if anyone -- was shot. And how badly.
Anyone who gets sucked into one of Carola's schemes is pretty much doomed. Cecilia? Couldn't happen to a nastier person... well ... except Karen (who isn't so much nasty -- although she is that -- as completely icky. ya basta.)
Thanks for the summary, Hombre! When Hugo was trashing the apt looking for tell-tale photos of Belinda's supposed lover, I found myself wondering what generation the writers belong to--who still gets their photos printed out? :)
I found it a nice touch that they used an actual band (Sie7e) for the opening of Kali-Cafe. The night is young, and it looks like some fireworks ahead.

Since I missed Cecilia's entrance to the story and dont know her back story (except that she gave up Raquel because she and Pilar's father couldn't afford to keep her), I dont understand your comment about why she is evil. I dont see the actress playing an evil character. Someone --what gives with Cecilia?
Re the book: Is it going to work out that she and Raquelare accomplices??
NovelaMaven, how could I totally forget Gonzalo giving Pilar the gun, as a way out of his problem of fulfilling the promise to Raquel? Whoops! I guess Gonzo wants Raquel to think Pilar overpowered him. Yeah, right. I'm guessing no one was shot, but knowing these writers, anything is possible.
Hi NJ Sue! About Cecilia:
I don't know about evil, but she is certainly self-involved and has hurt a lot of people by her actions as well as her failure to act.
She is introduced as a reclusive, pill-popping alcoholic, consumed with self-pity and with bizarre taste in eye make-up who has been estranged from her daughter Pilar and her two grandchildren.
She kept Raquel's existence a secret from Pilar all her life. When she is finally forced to explain how she came to separate her daughters, she comes up with a self-serving story in which Rebeca's mother (Cecilia's husband's ex-wife)is to blame for Raquel's fate: That woman was such a blood-sucking harpy, what with her demands for alimony and child support, that Cecilia couldn't afford to raise TWO babies. (We know that she was living comfortably enough to have a maid at the time so we're not talking hard-core poor here.) I suspect there is more to the story than we yet know.
She strongly suspected that evil Raquel had taken Pilar's place but she kept it to herself, putting many people in danger by her silence.
Who knows what's going on with this book thing. Could be key, could be a red herring (no shortage of those around these parts!)
After blurting out fue él in front of Mariano and Quesada, Zahra frantically tries to cover her tracks to protect her evil engender.
Rafa tells his lawyer someone is trying to frame him. This is before he has found out about the murder. Rafa’s fertile brain is always on the alert. He remembers drinking the juice, and gives the dregs to his lawyer to test for sleeping pills.
Abel practices being a hypocrite, telling the P’s what a shame it is such a nice guy was killed.
Enrique, in tears, tells Alicia over the crime scene tape that someone killed his uncle. Meanwhile, Zahra tells Olga she has to speak to Abel and to please find him.
Mina says that the only one who had anything against Francisco Losada was Rafael Urrieta. Flor says he was in jail. Abel injects himself into the conversation saying a guy like Rafa has all kinds of henchmen. He doesn’t have to be present to do murder. Flor rounds on him. “What do you know about Rafael to be saying such things about him?” He says she shouldn’t defend a guy with blood on his hands. Flor tells him at least he shows his face. That is a real man, not someone who speaks behind the back of someone who is not there to defend themselves. She shuts him up.
José María tries to talk with Rocío, perhaps to tell her how he feels. But, again, she tells him he made his choice (Ines), and he should stay away.
There’s something going on about bullets that I don’t understand. Francisco had a silver bullet in his pants pocket. A silver bullet was extracted from his body as the one that killed him. And the gun in Rafa’s cell contained silver bullets. What I don’t understand is the bullet in Francisco’s pocket and how it got there. Maybe I missed something. Mariano (alias Sherlock Guerrero) seems to find this all significant. Also, Mariano doesn’t see how Rafael could have left his cell, gone to the wedding, and killed Francisco without being seen. Plus, he’s not in love with Zahra, he’s in love with Flor; so where’s the motive?
We see another amazing scene with Zahra and Abel. He tells her he’s not a murderer. She says that as much as she’d like to believe that, she knows he killed Francisco solely to hurt her. He tells her to get over herself; she’s not the first woman to abandon a baby. And, if she suspects him, why doesn’t she tell the police? She tells him about the first time she held him after he was born. None of this penetrates the armor of this guy.
While Abel is in the process of telling her she has no maternal feelings, Sacto shows up. He senses this guy is upsetting Zahra even more and tells him to leave. He tries his best to comfort her. In her distress she tells Sacto that he did this to get revenge on her. Sacto thinks she means God, and tells her God would not punish her like that. Flor overhears what they say, and then also moves to be with Zahra. The next day Flor and Sacto both agree that something is very “off” about Abel Torres. Later Flor looks at the painting, still in view in Zahra’s bedroom, and says she’s seen those eyes before.
Mariano gets Rafael from his cell, tells him about the silver bullets, and asks him to confess. Rafa just tells him not to be an idiot and that Mariano knows very well he didn’t do it. He says he has a strong suspicion of the guilty party and his name is Abel Torres. Mariano looks stunned. Of course, Mariano won’t want to kill the goose he thinks is going to lay some golden eggs. So this probably isn’t going anywhere.
Rigoberto is getting nicer by leaps and bounds. He says they’ll keep the hotel running smoothly until Zahra is feeling better. Olga plans to work hard at this also.
Diana tells Enrique that Filomena plans to accuse Zahra of murder to get Francisco’s money.
And, our manipulative little witch Ines picks the middle of all this chaos to tell José María she’s pregnant. Gah!
I posted this on the forum too...I'm really bored with this show now. They totally need to step it up and get some excitement going. There's way too much that can be fast forwarded because it's just pointless conversation. Hopefully, something interesting/exciting/worthwhile will happen at the cafe party on tonight's episode.
Thanks Hombre, great recap. Watching the train wreck, but not leaving the scene of the accident.
I also was screaming at Iñaki: Just shoot Raquel, dummy!
David C. is doing a good job as Ismael, but the writers keep letting him down. He's sorry for Pilar and lets her go, but he's willing to blow Andrea's brains out?
And basta with the gunshot, fade to black fakeouts.
Carola didn't learn a thing in jail. If you look in the dictionary under "loose cannon", you'll see her face.
Yeah, if I were the in the cast of this thing, I'd invent a new last scene: the actors tar and feather the writer.
tnx Hombre
NovelaMaven, I agree with you about the "unholy trio". actually no matter how absurd the plot is, I always enjoy their scenes. apart from excellent acting their relationships are interesting too. the three could provide a new novela, in my opinion. nonetheless the show is filled with dumb Karen-Nibaldo stuff.
Cecilia is the worst actress-character I have ever seen! I hardly can stand her scenes. as for the books, I don't care about them anymore!
I think Gonzo was shot. the story of la bella y la bestia has reached to an interesting point. if only there was a good reason for Gonzo honoring his promise.
"... the story of la bella y la bestia has reached to an interesting point"
Yes, it really has, Alex. And I love watching these actors play off against each other.
"Yeah, if I were the in the cast of this thing, I'd invent a new last scene: the actors tar and feather the writer."
Nice one, Novelera! But I wonder how much creative control the writers actually have on this project. At this point, I have a hunch it isn't much.
Everyone thanks for the recaps. I have to admit things not going well when you don't care that a teenage girl got kidnapped. And I simply did not care, I said okay one more victim see ya.
Karen's behavior is just simply insane, and revolting. She's not cute, she's not funny and last night's episode just put her over the top.
I just don't understand why writers go wrong with these things.
We have 4 more episodes I wonder how they are going to explain all this.
Why I'm still watching, I think the actor who is portraying Ismael has been superb these last few episodes, and I can see why Gonzalo can't shoot Raquel, he just can't distinguish between her and Pilar, after all he is nuts!!!
I have to wonder when and if they are going to veer back to the ending of the previous version of this La Familia al Lado, so far I believe they are very offtrack.
Is it too much to hope for that Yolanda smacks the taste out of Karen's mouth once the truth about Nibs' missing his gig inevitably comes out?
(And after some twenty-odd episodes I just want to take Angelica Maria's handsome face, dunk it into a sink, and scrub all that eyeliner off her. With a Brillo pad.)
And since they seemingly have put the final kibosh on a Pilar/Javier reunion, I'm not sure what the heck this means for Gonzaki. Will he die protecting Pilar and her children from Raquel and Adolfmael, or will he survive and we end up with some cracked-out happily ever after where Pilar's visiting him in jail or a manicomio?
Bill, I am certainly hoping for some dire consequences for Karen for what she's done to Nibaldo. What she's done is not funny; it's mean. I'm bored with the character and her delusions of grandeur.
I'm thinking Gonzaki HAS to die. I can see Ismael locked up in a loony bin, even though he's done horrible things. But his brother was the architect of revenge against the Condes, has killed multiple times, and is responsible for Rebeca's condition.
Reprise of the old shot-goes-off-in-the-struggle-but-who-is-the-shootor-and-who-is-the-shootee shtick. Now we see it is Iñaki who falls to the floor, his right thigh bleeding. Pilar is horrified and wants to take him somewhere for help. But he convinces her to leave with Andrea – they love each other but it’s too late for him. Where could he go now that his secret is out? Besides, by staying, he can keep Raquel at bay.
Pilar finally – finally – allows Andrea to drag her away into the spooky night and back to the second spookiest place of all, the Ruiz home. Andrea, however, has had enough: she won’t spend another night in that house where three killers come and go as they please. Whoa ... she has an idea where the household can take refuge ...
We’re not in Coral Gables anymore
Now that Pilar has become a bit more ... um ... assertive, it won’t be see easy to distinguish her from Raquel. Hey, let’s put Raquel in a Killer Black jumpsuit!
Raquel finds the fallen Iñaki who, by now, has passed out from the pain and blood loss. She bullies bitter Ismael into patching him up. Then Iñaki begs her not to leave him alone. She stays. For now. He reflects on how he and Ismael have thrown their lives away – Ismael would have been a great doctor – and tells Raquel it’s not too late for her to give up on her plan for revenge. Hah. Fat chance.
The best defense is a good offense
And Cecilia is as offensive as they come. She dismisses Hilda’s questions and refuses to let her see the mysterious book. Hilda tells Pilar about it. Unfortunately, Pilar has other fish to fry right now. She’ll have to think it over later: Did my crazy ma write La Casa de al lado and Condenados even though Raquel says she’s the author?
Later, we see Cecilia alone in the Ruiz house with a cardboard box. She takes out a volume that looks familiar ...
Karen is no Mexican Liza Minnelli ... but she may have a future as a budding Phyllis Diller. Her stream-of-consciousness ramblings crack up the audience! Eva the star-maker signs her up!
Nibaldo comes out of his stupor and doesn’t remember Karen’s dirty trick. Yet. Yolanda is ready to look past it and rekindle their love. Oh please.
Everyone’s on the move
In response to Andrea’s understandable angst, the Ruiz household picks up stakes and moves across the way to the spookiest place of all, formerly known as Casa Conde.
Pilar convinces a very reluctant Emilio to go back with her for Iñaki – he saved her life and Andrea’s. She doesn’t know if he’s dead or alive. But Iñaki is no longer where Pilar left him.
Meanwhile Raquel has played nurse long enough. She’s onto Iñaki’s game – He’s lying to her to keep her from hurting Pilar, the woman he really loves. Well enough’s enough. She’s outta here! Iñaki calls after her with increasing desperation... But she’s gone!
Carola takes Cecilia for a ride in the country
She takes a photo of her -- tied up in a chair, mouth duct-taped – and phones it to Ismael with a message: She’s all yours! (Unfortunately, Carola then removes the tape and we see that Cecilia isn’t really tied up. Damn.)
The message is duly received. Ismael recognizes his old home. Nos vemos pronto, Carolita! Bwahahahaha!
Great one, NovelaMaven! I especially liked "The best defense is a good offense...And Cecilia is as offensive as they come." Hah!
BTW, I did get a glimpse of her book, and I believe the title is "Pilar". Not sure, though, and definitely not sure what that would mean. Could there be a possibility that Cecilia is like some guardian angel, and is really working for the good of all? Please, no!
I'm also not too happy that Karen was able to succeed as a stand up comedian, and even berates Nibaldo, telling him to watch his drinking, he drank that whole bottle of Javier's whiskey (total lie).
It sure is handy that Ismael has such good suturing skills (and equipment). He's been able to keep both Raquel and Gonzaki in action.
Back to Cecilia. One minute, she's yelling at Hilda, then she's meek as a kitten, going along with Carola's scheme. Multiple personality disorder? Just kidding. I note that Carola told Emilio she was "putting an end to this whole business", and acted as if she might not come back alive, but doesn't care. Whoa!
Gojo and Belinda go back to her apartment for some regional mexicano cd's. They kiss outside the door, but once they're inside, they discover not only was it trashed, by Hugo spray painted the wall with "You don't do that to ME, bitch!" They spend a while cleaning it up, not wanting to call the cops or file a complaint, because that might just make things worse. As they come outside, Hugo is there. He rushes at Gojo, who easily knocks him down. So Hugo pulls a gun! Gojo does the ol' just shoot me thing, pointing out that Hugo would spend the rest of his life in jail, and this stops Hugo. For now.
Since the noise of the party has prevented Marisa from answering his cell, Cris comes in person to ask her to visit Ty. Yaya takes a picture of this, sends it to Sara, who goes ape, flinging several breakable items against the wall (she later orders Yaya to clean it up, doesn't want those meddlesome maids to know).
Marisa says she may visit Ty, but doesn't want to cause more problems. She reminds Cris that their thing is over.
Lety has succeeded in making Victor jealous with this new "novio" who was really a one night stand. Vic keeps trying to kiss her while she's doing her maid job, and finally, she kisses back! Ironically, Lucas also is really smitten with Lety (who sort of reminds me of Sandra Echeverria on the upcoming Decisiones show), but Cris reminds Lucas he has a wife and kids in Mexico.
Marisa has prepared all sorts of charts for some new ideas she has to make the cleaning operation more efficient. Mean Alicia takes the charts, which she'll present to Mr. Frost as her own.
Sara and Catalina keep plotting against each other.
Amelia has slept in Ty's room, and Sara comes in the morning, gives him a nice tie (a tie for Ty :) There's a knock on the door, and here's Marisa!
I'm actually glad I missed the part about Cecilia's book, because I think that would have warranted me yelling "What the hell, show?" at my TV. Why would they introduce a third book at the near-literal end of all things? And why would Rocket Raccoon be involved with it, anyway?
(Word verification: irsessel, which is the sound of the air compressor used to spraypaint Cecilia's eyeliner on.)
Karen as a stand-up comic was okay enough, though Eva throwing her support behind her blindly was a bit much (if probably inevitable, since we're still at the end of all things). I'm still hoping that Nibaldo figures out what happened, though at this point I wouldn't be surprised to see it glossed over just to get her out of his and Yolanda's orbit after they reconcile.
And while there's still a chance he might survive this, Gonzo probably is going to die saving Pilar from Raquel. Raquel still has to die on general principle, and Adolfmael...I suppose they could mess him up a la Leonardo in a pinch.
loved your recap, NovelaMaven.
interestingly Pilar's love for Inaki is kind of saving her! Raquel won't find her at home. though we don't know what Raquel really wants to do. I doubt she herself knows. the writers tampoco! =)
now Inaki can't move. will Pilar find him? either yes or not his fate is a question mark.
Hombre, are we the only two souls in the entire universe who are watching this show? Or does it just feel that way?
I always enjoy and appreciate your recaps. The secondary plotlines are heating up and I find them much more interesting than the Cristobal/Marisa sequences. Hanging in there,
J in Oregon
Mariano comes to tell Flor and Zahra that there’s lots of forensic evidence against Rafa. Mariano insists on some bullying time alone with Zahra. She will only say that whoever killed Francisco is a demon. He asks her about Abel because Rafa named him as a suspect. Looking shifty, Zahra says that Francisco introduced them. She nervously asks if he suspects Abel; and he tells her everyone is a suspect.
Abel and Johnny talk about Alicia. They say that Johnny has worked for Abel for 7 years. [He was a major cartel figure at 15? Please.] Abel is in no hurry to trust Alicia. He says that whoever made that big buy is not a consumer, but a competitor who plans to sell in their territory. They decide to set up a second buy and blow the guy’s brains out when he shows.
In the medicatura Ines simpers away about the baby. I think that’s called “assuming the sale” in a sales pitch. JM asks her how she can be so sure and then, pointedly, when was her last period? She starts to stammer a bit, responding “a few days”. JM tells her he’s not an irresponsible guy; he took his precautions. She responds that accidents occur.
Flor is at Rafa’s cell door. She tells him what Mariano said about his killing Alirio and Pablo out of jealousy. He asks if she believes he did it. She says no, but this is what the people in town will think – that he did it for the same reason, jealousy of Zahra. Rafa tells Flor that Abel came to the jail to insult him. He never had seen him before. Flor wonders if Rafa might have harmed someone in Abel’s family. He tells her to be very careful. The guy is dangerous.
Mariano and Quesada learn from Rafa’s lawyer about the large amount of sleeping pills in the juice. Quesada thinks this removes Rafa from suspicion. But Mariano isn’t letting go so quickly. He says he and Quesada need a quick arrest or they’ll look incompetent. Plus, he has another suspect in mind: Malicia. Earlier on he questioned her about her being the only P who was not in plain sight when the murder went down. And he knew about her anger at Francisco over his trying to ruin her relationship with Enrique. She told him she forgave him long ago.
Enrique comes up with a great idea to protect Alicia. She will say she left the wedding reception to be with a special “client” from the capital. She didn’t want Enrique to know about it. That client will be Diego, who will back up her story. Whew!
Flor and Zahra talk about Rafa. Zahra says, hopefully: “He did it, right?” Flor tells her about the drugged juice, and that Rafa told her not to trust Abel. Zahra keeps trying to throw Flor off the scent. Flor finally tells her that Abel came to see him in the jail, and that’s why he doesn’t trust him. Zahra looks stunned. Speaking of the evil little creep, he met Alicia at the hotel and now seems to have his eye on her.
Filomena goes berserk on the hotel balcony, calling Zahra a murderer and eventually grabbing her by the arm to try to physically throw her out of the hotel. Abel intervenes and forcefully tells Filo that Zahra is the owner of the hotel and, if her presence bothers her, she (Filo) should leave. Something about him shuts the b*tch up. He then tells Zahra not to pay attention to her and not to sign anything. Hmmm.
Vicente tells Rocío at the hacienda that he saw Mariano insist on Lourdes riding off on horseback. This differs from Mariano’s account of riding after her when she’d already left. The maid also saw this. The other one, not Luisa.
José María is angry with Ines after Frigida and Caridad gang up on him about a quick wedding. He wants to know why she got those two involved in what should be private and between them. He ends up saying he’ll do the right thing, but first he wants to examine her to see if this baby actually exists. [My fingers are crossed. They could, of course, throw us a curve by having her really be pregnant and not be aware. Heaven forfend!]
Thanks for the nice words, guys. Very interesting comments today.
My dos pesos: Both Ismael and Iñaki have to die. Their plan to wipe out the Condes will be upended and they themselves will be responsible for their own destruction.
Raquel -- I still think she may appear to be killed but end up taking over Pilar's life. Only the viewer will know. And only at the very end.
I don't have a clue what will happen to Carola ...
I hope Cecilia's role is minimal. Her character is just a bunch of literary hamburger helper and shouldn't be in the spotlight, for good or ill.
Dame Agatha's servants not only knew where all the bodies were buried, they had buried a few themselves. But the servants here seem far less important -- and therefore far less interesting -- than those in the Christie story.
But hey, what do I know? I'm usually wrong about these things. I still can't believe that the insufferable Dr. Heriberto (el sabelotodo) ended up usurping Osvaldo's place in Triunfo del Amor :)
The Award Show Edition
Nominees for the most sadistic behavior in the episode:
1. Raquel for threatening Cecilia with a butcher knife in her pitiless pursuit of Princess Pilar and later smirking evilly over helpless, terrified Rebeca.
2. Ismael for lurking in the dark and pouncing on Carola.
3. Carola for biting free of Ismael’s hold and then, jaws dripping with her tormentor’s blood, giving as good as she got. The burning wax in the groin was an especially nice touch.
4. Karen for being a conniving, selfish, jealous pig.
The winner: No contest – it’s Carola! She wins her Monster Merit Badge tonight!
Nominees for el más estupido
1. Emilio is nominated twice in this category:
a. First, for not picking up the “Pilar” book when he has the chance.
b. And second for hanging up on Rebeca who has just gone through hell to reach the cell phone on the bed and warn everyone that Raquel is on her way.
2. Pilar for heading out alone into the night to find Iñaki. And in six-inch heels yet. At least put on your running shoes, fool!
3. Karen for just existing.
This was harder. I’m gonna go with Karen.
Nominees for characters in the wrong novela
1. Eva fussing over the gigs she has lined up for Karen and Nibaldo.
2. Yolanda and Nibaldo and their tender reconciliation.
3. Karen and her jealous pique.
I say big-haired Eva gets the prize.
Nominees for enduring the greatest pain and suffering in a 45 minute time slot:
1. Rebeca for being a nearly silent and almost completely helpless witness to the stupidity and cruelty of those around her.
2. Iñaki, alone, in agony and unable to protect the woman he loves.
3. Ismael, nearly naked and subjected to Carola’s torture. (Crazy sadist skill, Carola – see above. Did she spend some time in Gitmo?)
4. Cecilia for enduring Raquel’s threats and then being left, bound and gagged, alone in the Ruiz house. (The producers pressured me to add her to the nominees. Me, I think she had it coming.)
5. Javier helpless in his hospital bed, unable to protect Pilar after Spirit Ignacia – much nicer than real-life Ignacia – warns that she is in danger.
And the most important award of the night –
Nominees for the “En el corazón no se manda” award:
Pilar and Iñaki share this one. Beauty and the Beast!
NovelaMaven you hit it out of the park.
I guess now we know who's going to be on fire tonight.
"The burning wax in the groin was an especially nice touch." (NovelaMaven)
Could someone please remind me what Ismael did to deserve the Vesuvius treatment from Carola? I guess it harks back to their time in that shack in the swamp. Still, it seems to be misplaced anger. I would have poured a pyroclastic flow on Gonzalo.
Speaking of Gonzalo, does his confession about being a murderer cover everything he's done? Here we are two days from the end of the novela and it's as though Rebecca's fiance and the bank lady were just swept under the rug. Pilar seems to be doing just, forgetting everything Gonzalo fessed up to. That borders on incredulity. It's like a heterosexual "Thelma and Louis" starting to play out. Rather ridiculous, in my view.
Some folks here have said Karen is a ridiculous character, which may or may not be true. Regardless, Rosalinda Rodriquez has done a great job with what she's been given. Whether Karen is liked or not, the character is memorable.
NovelaMaven, I loved loved loved your Award Show Edition.
me too, I think Cecilia had it coming. haha
NoveleroTex, Pilar is not forgetting what Gonzalo fessed up to. Pilar just can't overcome her feelings for him. but don't worry! Gonzalo will either die or go to prison. so tranquilo :)
as for Karen, no matter how good the actress is doing her job, the character is out of place and it is the writers' fault.
NovelaMaven, I think we should give a special filler award to Yolanda & Nibaldo - thanking Karen & Eva.
Loved the awards, NovelaMaven!
I agree with those who feel that Gonzaki has far outshined Adolfmael in the number and brutality of his murders. Gonzaki killed Igor Mora, several nurses, the prison guard, Omar, Matias, Rosa Yen, and probably some more I forgot. He also shot Adolfo, but Adolfo survived. Raquel killed the librarian, Ignacia and helped Renato along. Besides Mabel (an accident), who has Adolfmael killed? There was some guy who was friendly with Carola way before Omar, but was really working with the Mora brothers. Can't remember who killed him. I know Ismael always accuses Gonzaki of making Ismael do his older brother's "dirty work", but I can't even remember any.
Can someone remind me of some of the bad things Adolfmael has done?
J in Oregon, I think lots of people are watching Una Maid, just not on our board. I have a feeling many people who like these "lighter" shows watch the Univision ones.
We get some public service messages in this show. First, although Ty is thin, he hasn't been watching his cholesterol, and the doctor points out this is a "silent killer" in the latino community. So Ty has blockage, and needs a very risky operation. He can pretty much forget about working, but of course, he doesn't want to hear this. He spends some time with Marisa on community projects. This of course angers Sara.
The other implied public service thing is that Jerome now has withdrawal symptoms from the steroids. If though he sort of wants to stop, he can't. Marisa will help Tania find some treatment center for this.
Hugo threatens Gojo again. Calixta backs up Gojo.
Sara flat out admits to Amelia she loves Cris, and Amelia tells Cris that since Sara has so much "class", he should give her a chance. Cris doesn't want to, because although he thinks Sara is nice, he doesn't love her.
Carmen and Lucas both are rooting for Marisa, and Bruno and Sara think that's because people of the same "class" support each other.
Catalina tries to humiliate Sara with an interview, so now Sara will try to strike back, ignoring Bruno's warning that Cat and Sara fighting hurts them both.
At the end of the episode, Victor is once again trying to kiss Lety in one of the rooms. She's half pushing him away. But this time, Marisa happens to enter the room and see Victor grabbing Lety, and Lety saying, let me go. Caught with their hands in the cookie jar!
"I agree with those who feel that Gonzaki has far outshined Adolfmael in the number and brutality of his murders. "
Adomael killed more people. he killed hundreds in Conde Hotels + the nurse, a man who wanted to help Rebeca, the drug dealer, the tourists, Ivan...
and
tried to kill Renato (Gonzo stopped him)
tried to kill Andrea
ruined the Condes' business
the difference between Adomael and Gonzo is that Adomael's victims are usually unknown to the viewers. but as for Gonzo, some characters are particularly created and developed sympathetically.
Alex, thanks for reminding us of some of Ismael’s atrocities.
As far as Carola is concerned, Ismael’s capital crime was using her adolescent resentment against her family to his advantage and making her fall in love with him. She looked at him and she saw herself, at least in part. That vision was unforgiveable.
Now her exaggerated rage is exploding against the mirror of Ismael but I can see her, in the end, turning that rage on herself, slashing herself with the shards of the broken mirror.
-----------
Also -- The viewers know more than the characters right now about which monster did what. In particular, the Condes don’t know everything Raquel has done.
---------------
And the viewers are still in the dark about Cecilia. Like Hilda, we are all wondering if la señora Cecilia es de fiar – o no...
--------------------
BTW, I think the actress playing Karen is doing a fabulous job. I just don’t enjoy the character – she seems to have wondered onto the set from one of those Mexican sit-coms I’m allergic to.
Brilliant idea, NovelaMaven, for the awards show.
I was also going to chime in about all the folks burned up in the fires Adolfmael paid some arsonist to set.
It doesn't look like there's going to be any retribution for Karen for having drugged Nibaldo. I was SO disappointed she didn't fall on her face at her "debut".
We begin with Zahra talking to Rafa in his cell. When Rafa asks pointed questions, Zahra denies knowing anything about Abel. When Rafa tells her he had nothing to do with Francisco’s death, she reminds him of the time he told her, even after being in love with Flor, that she was his possession. He said that he’s a different man now. He tells Zahra that, when Abel came to the jail, he said that he was paying Rafa back for all the things he’d done, and that he would be the new Rafael Urrieta in Nueva Esperanza. Zahra looks sick.
Abel and his henchman are roaring along the road in the Hummer, with Johnny in the back seat. Abel tells him he’s an idiot for selecting Malicia to be part of the drug deals, since her boyfriend is a reporter and part of the family that runs the newspaper to boot. Rufino and some other guy are following them, and Abel has his henchman pistol whip Johnny. [What fun! I watched it twice!] Rufino grins in an evil manner when he stops to question Johnny, but fails his Villain – Grade 3 exam when he doesn’t get anything out of him.
Mariano seems to hint in a conversation with Zahra, that if he can’t pin the crime on Rafael, he’ll go after Alicia.
Flor insists on opening the club. Some of the Ps resist, but Zahra does think it’s a good idea. We get to see Anaconda in action. I gotta give that actor credit for dancing with a live snake. It sure looks real to me.
José María is starting to annoy me. When he discusses the pregnancy with Sacto, he gets mixed messages. Sacto: “Well, in any case you agreed to marry her”. And then later he seems to be advising him that he could be a father to the child even if he didn’t marry Ines. JM properly asks him “How’s that working out for you with Cat?” Meanwhile, the spiteful duo of Caridad and Frigida are working to overcome Ines’ small supply of scruples. Plus Frigida has a friend in some clinic that produces a fake positive pregnancy test. I’m sure Ines will say she was too shy to be examined by JM. Bah!
Rocío and Cat settle in for a chat. Rocío remarks that certain senses are heightened when vision is lost. She can sense worry and stress in others. Cat tries to deny she’s worried, but Rocío just goes on to say that she can’t understand why Cat, with money and power, lets Mariano get in her way. She goes on to ask about what happened the night of Lourdes’ death. Before more is said, Mariano comes in and wants to know what they were talking about and why they stopped when he came in. They both say they were just talking about the murder of Francisco. But he smells something. Later he tells Cat that because Rocío spent so much time around prostitutes, she may have odd ideas. He wonders if she said any absurd things about him. [I think he’s afraid Rocío will tell Cat about outright, or at the very least attempted, incest when Rocío was much younger. He tells Cat she needs to tell him what Rocío says to him.
Zahra tells Enrique she’s willing to give up the inheritance and move back to the Calle de Consuelo. The money should belong to Francisco’s family. Enrique disagrees, telling her his uncle would never forgive him if he didn’t defend her. He meant for her to be cared for the rest of her life.
Abel has hired some guy who has a cousin working as a guard in the Timotes jail. The guy fakes drunk and gets put into the cell with Rafa, over Rafa’s strong objections. The guy overpowers him in the night, puts duct tape over his mouth, and proceeds to spend the night punching him and bashing his head against the wall. He also chloroforms him at one point.
Johnny tells Abelardo that he thinks Abel beat him and threw him out of the truck to show Rufino that they weren’t accomplices. That hadn’t occurred to me. Or maybe Johnny is hoping he’s not out of a job.
Alicia is on the phone with Enrique at the 4P when Mariano walks up and starts giving her crap about being on a personal call during work hours. Enrique tells her to be cool. She hangs up and lays her story on Mariano about the “client” she was with during the time of the murder. And, yes, the guy is still in town to be interrogated.
Mariano and Abel have a veiled conversation at a table in the 4P. Mariano asks him pointed questions about how he plans to invest in NE. Abel first says he isn’t going to answer, but then just says the words: rice, coffee, tomatoes. He goes on to say that, in the towns where he invests, the authorities also do well financially. Mariano grins from ear to ear. Abel says he wants peace and tranquility and that no one should inspect his trucks or come onto his land. Flor is watching these two conspire from the bar. Abel gives Mariano a piece of paper with an amount he will receive monthly for his ceguera. Mariano replies that, in this very moment, he can’t even see Abel.
Zahra and Olga talk about Abel. Zahra says that Rafa can never know that Abel is his son. Olga maintains that maybe Abel got the bad blood of Rafael Urrieta.
Abel asks Alicia to ask Flor to step outside. There’s a helicopter hovering overhead. He tells her it’s a surprise.
Word verification: Conde (really!), as in the poor sods everybody's been gunning for since the start of the show.
NovelaMaven, I'm surprised you didn't include the Marcela Arismendi Award for Excellence in Scenery Consumption, which definitely goes to Ismael "Wax on, wax off" Mora. Torture isn't supposed to be funny, let alone Carola's monstering out, but...wow. (Runners-up: Karen Ortega and Raquel Arismendi.)
Yolanda and Nibs' reconciliation was sweet enough, coming out of right field as it did. It would have been nice to see Karen a bit more bent out of shape over it, let alone seeing the sleeping pill thing come out, but I guess she's off to become the next Brett Butler of Novelandia and they're blowing past that so they can focus on the big stuff. (In theory.)
And the full title for Cecilia's book appears to be Pilar de mi vida (Emilio and Hilda, yes, were muy estupido for not snagging a copy on the way out). I'm going to assume that it's a "good" book with that title, though when the hell Rocket Raccoon had the time to write it still bugs me...
Great recap, Novelera. I particularly liked,
"Rufino grins in an evil manner when he stops to question Johnny, but fails his Villain – Grade 3 exam when he doesn’t get anything out of him."
Johnny probably believed that Rufino wouldn't kill him for not talking while he knows that Abel certainly would kill him for talking.
I kept dozing off during the capitulo. Did Sacto meet with some of his ex-peones?
I'm not sure why Mariano is suddenly suspicious of what Rocio might tell Catalina. I know that he wants her near him but I thought that he bought her forgiveness/we are family story. He brought her to the hacienda after all.
So during the wedding, there was a guard posted outside of Rafa's cell but now there is no one around? I guess Abel's folks could have bought the guards off but it still seems kind of weird that this guy could abuse Rafa all night without anyone interfering. Maybe all this suffering as a helpless victim is going to turn Rafa into a good person, worthy of Flor.
Hey guys, glad you enjoyed the Award Show Edition!
Bill C and Alex, I loved your suggestions for categories. Maybe those awards could be presented at a private, industry-only dinner? (They could hire Nibs and Karen to liven up the evening).
:)
Jean, regarding Rafa and the bad guy in his cell, the bad guy told Abel when he was having his "job interview" that he had a primo who worked as a guard in the Timotes jail. And when Rafa vehemently objected to the supposed drunk being put in his cell, the guard who put him there wouldn't even look him in the eye. So I think the primo was on duty that night and let the other guy abuse Rafa.
I think Mariano wants very much to believe Rocío has forgiven him and is happy being by his side. But he knows what things he did to her in the past (they've certainly hinted if not outright said sexual abuse) and probably is suspicious of any conversation she has with anyone that is broken off when he enters the room.
Sacramento met with his current peons. He couldn't understand why he was losing workers because he raised their salaries and was giving them some kind of profit sharing payments based on the sale of textiles being made there. One of the guys told him the ones who left Sacto's hacienda had gone to work at this new hacienda, that had been run down, but was now being fixed up. And they were paying a lot more there.
