Una Familia Con Suerte #99-100 Fri 1/27/12 Comedy Takes a Holiday

Or, "Una Familia Sin Suerte"

Part One: A Time to Laugh

Ana slaps Fraud. It is good.

In a montage:
  • Fraud goes home crying to Pina, who dabs his wounded face with a hanky.
  • Pancho gives Rebeca a necklace.
  • Moni and Mommy bond.
  • Alex meets with a priest about the boda.
  • Temo gives Meli a big balloon while Ramona stands there awkwardly, poor kid.
  • Pancho is measured for his father-of-the-bride outfit.
  • Ado catches Pina daydreaming about her seduction of Vice, but looking sad.
  • The Lopez family looks at samples for the wedding.
"Weeks later," the whole gang (including Ado, Meli, and Ramona) attend an Alejandra Guzman concert. AG tells a Televisa reporter that she's resuming her tour with renewed energy and taking better care of herself. Oh what a surprise, she's being called back for an encore, so she re-sings the Día de Suerte song accompanied by the children in the audience. Then the Lopez party joins her on the stage, and let me tell you, someone in that group can NOT sing. While AG is still singing, she thanks Pancho for helping her out.

Next day, Pancho tells Lupita how much everyone will miss her but she'll always be his little girl. She says it's not like they're moving to Africa - they'll be living very close by.

Pancho says it seems like it was just yesterday when she was born and she got sick and he gave her this medallion and the Virgen de Guadalupe saved her life. And now she's going away. But he wants her to be happy. Pancho Lopez will always be by her side when she needs him. He says she reminds him of her mother and this place where they are is where he kissed her mom for the first time. Lupita's sad her mother can't be at the wedding. But she's also happy to see him happy with Rebeca.

Fernanda's detective meets with her doctor and tells him that a nun came forward with some new information about the medallion. The doctor thinks that the possibility of finding her child will renew Fernanda's will to live.

Wedding day:

Alex admits to Fraud that he's a little nervous about the wedding. As for his parents, they can't stay very long, in fact they're going to leave directly from the church. Then Fraud whines to Alex about his problems with Ana. At least these two are friends again. They even hug!

Bridesmaids Ana, Candy, Moni, and Chela try on their gowns. That's an awesome color on all of then. Kind of a bold turquoise. Ana lets slip that she's been seeing Fred. Mónica is taken aback by this news. But another concern emerges: they realize nobody invited Elena. She's gonna be mad!

Adoración appears to Fraud in an ill-fitting purple gown with fluorescent yellow wrap. Fraud asks her what's going on with his mother, who's been acting weird lately.

Right now Pina is upstairs with her friend Kathi. She says K is the only person she trusts even a little. She wants to tell her about something that hasn't happened to her in a long time.

Tomás pays Alex a pre-boda visit. He looks even more rumpled than usual. He warns Alex that if he hurts Lupita, if she sheds so much as a single tear because of him, it'll never end for him. If Alex lets Lupita down, Tom will win her back.

Pina and Kathi are waiting two minutes to see two lines on a stick. The two lines dutifully appear. Pina is preggers!

This is shaping up to be the greatest day EVER.

Lupita is ready for the wedding. Pancho gives her a final pre-wedding pep talk full of sweet words and advice, such as the importance of respect, communication, and love; never go to bed angry; and don't forget your own happiness. He gives her a blessing and now it's time to go.

Rebeca meets them outside the house and gives Lupita her wedding present: a trip to Hawaii!

At the Irabiéns', Temo awaits Meli, who is herself a vision in white. (With a bustle!) The dogs are dressed up for the wedding as well. Upstairs, Pina happily anticipates telling Vice the good news about her stick with the two lines on it. Fraud comes in to say hello/goodbye, is once again surprised and a bit concerned to notice her unusual mood, but has to take off for the wedding. (Fraud calls Kathi "Tía" but I don't think she's his actual aunt, just the kind of aunt who's your friend's mother.)

Vice, looking crazy handsome in jeans and a flannel shirt (later I think it looks like madras, in any case it's plaid and it looks good on him), runs into Candy and kisses her in public. He says he doesn't care if anyone sees them. He can't stand Pina and he's going to ask her for a divorce. He doesn't care if it means he loses everything. Anyway, he's got some company shares, some connections, and some power. He wants to be happy with Candy forever; doesn't she want that too? Candy is worried that it will be her fault that Pina will suffer. Vice says it's their life to live and their love to fight for.

Pancho drives Lupita to the wedding, using La Burra's loudspeaker to announce to everyone on the street that he's with the most beautiful bride in the world. This is what every young girl dreams of: to be chauffered to her wedding in a braying vegetable truck with Big Mix ads all over it. Fortunately, Lupita loves his jokes. She asks if he's going to marry Rebeca. He's not sure, what with some of the detractors in their family.

Pina goes to the doctor with Kathi and it's confirmed: she's four weeks along. She's the happiest woman in the world!

La Burra gets to the church, and suddenly someone gets cold feet. Is it Lupita? No, it's Pancho! He wants Lupita to take off with him to the beach.

Ana and Chela worry about Candy's non-arrival. Pepe and Fraud exchange half-hearted insults. Elena makes sour faces. Chacho drools over Chela, who takes no notice. Candy breaks a heel rushing to the church. Nobody thinks it's particularly odd that she's such a nervous wreck.

Temo and Meli take Lupe's train and the music begins. Pancho and Lupe enter the church. Almost everyone, including Alex's parents, comment on Lupe's beauty. A few notable exceptions are Chela, who chooses this time to grill Candy about her whereabouts and then shuts her down when she tries to tell her what Vince said to her; and Elena, who scowls and tells Tom that Lupe doesn't look good at all. Ah, what a delight it would have been to have her in the bridal party; I keep thinking it would have been funny if Lupita had made all her bridesmaids wear fingerless gloves in Elena's honor since she's the one who went online as Lupe and made the original fateful date with Alex who was online posing as Fraud. But I digress.

Pancho delivers Lupe to the altar. "Alex, I'm giving you part of my heart. Love and respect her."

At home, Vice tells Enzo that if he really wants to see Chela, why doesn't he just go to the wedding? Sure, people love it when their mortal enemies crash their wedding. (Now I'm thinking that's oxford, not madras or flannel.) Vice asks what he sees in her. Enzo says she's not as curvy as Candy, but she has her own charm. She's deep, intelligent, pretty, determined. Vice retorts that Candy's smart too; it's just not apparent. Heh.

And, Vice says, he's made a decision. He looks around carefully to make sure no one is listening, and spits for good measure. Enzo, who I guess is not bothered by spray-spit, leans in to hear the secret: "I'm going to divorce Pina."

Pina and Kathi have already made a couple dozen purchases, each in a different bag. One of the items looks suspiciously like a stuffed version of the cartoon Pancho from the show's closing credits.

Vice insists that he doesn't care if he loses everything. He was never this much in love before, even when he met Pina. Enzo points out that he's been in love with money. True, but Vice isn't giving up money! He dreads going home every day because he knows what he's going to hear. But everything's great now. He twirls happily.

Enzo's visit is cut short by a call from Violeta, who wants to meet.

The ceremony goes on, with Pancho weeping, Chacho drooling, Candy daydreaming about Vince, and Chela reading the "love is patient, love is kind" Bible verse. Ana and Fraud look at one another. Ado and Chato look at one another. Alex and Lupita look at one another.

Violeta tells Enzo that these few weeks have been the happiest of her life, but she wants to stop lying to Mónica. She wants to tell her the truth.

Alex and Lupita have just been pronounced husband and wife. Alex is kissing the bride. (Tomás stomps out in a huff; nobody cares.) The crowd cheers. Confetti is thrown. There's more kissing.

Part Two: A Time to Weep

Alex pulls away from the kiss. Is he coming up for air? No, he's clutching his chest and sinking to the ground, his face twisted in agony. Panicked friends and family flock around. The children are confused and frightened.

Meanwhile, Enzo and Violeta argue. (It's becoming clearer that Violeta is a generally nice and seemingly sane person 98% of the time. The only person she has a problem with is Enzo, but it's a very large and ugly problem.) She can't look into her daughter's eyes and continue to tell her lies. "Well this is a fine time for you to remember she's your daughter, 20 years later." She only came when he told her Moni was looking for her. In any case, Violeta says, she's met her and she likes her. Enzo gets really rough with her. She complains that he's hurting her. He says if she talks to Moni, he'll hurt her even more. She asks, who will she meet? Enzo Rinaldi? Or Facundo Contreras? (Wasn't his last name Jimenez? Well, now it's Contreras. Or maybe it's both.)

Lupita joins Alex in the ambulance, followed by Alex's parents. Everyone is crying, even Fraud. The only exception is Elena, whose face is hard to read. (Actually, it's not that hard to read, I just can't believe what I think I'm seeing. It looks like she's not worried, but that she's hoping for something... like Alex's death. Is that really what I'm seeing?)

Enzo doesn't want Moni to know the truth because it will hurt her. Violeta says it's BECAUSE she loves Moni she thinks she should know. Enzo resents the implication that he doesn't love Mónica, after all those nights he was the one who stayed up caring for her, taking her to the hospital when she was sick, because she was all he had and her mother didn't care. Enzo begs V to keep the secret, in the name of the love they once shared and the unconditional love he has for Moni.

Evening. Pina is looking forward to tonight's dinner, when she'll give Vice her big news. Vice, who has recently buttoned his shirt, has no idea why she's so excited, but they are interrupted by a tearful call from Fraud asking them to come to the hospital.

Alex's parents weep at his bedside. (This is probably the most time they've spent with him in the last ten years; it's a shame that he has to be unconscious for it.) Lupita watches through the glass. Fraud puts his hand on her shoulder, and suddenly I get a funny feeling about those two, but now's not the time. Alex's father nods her in, and he and his wife back off.

Lupita begs Alex to open his eyes and wake up so they can go to Hawaii and be happy together forever and have their kids and grow old together.

Vice and Pina show up and console Fraud. They converge for a rare family hug and he cries on their shoulders.

The doctor tells the Lopez/Irabién party that he's just spoken to Alex's parents. They said Alex has a congenital heart defect. Moni asks if he will live. The doctor doesn't say anything. (In fact, nobody is doing anything for Alex at all. Perhaps there really isn't anything they can do, but I'd feel better if I saw a lot more equipment and activity.)

Fraud joins Lupita in Alex's room. Alex wakes up and starts talking to Lupita. She's the most beautiful wife in the world and he loves her. He asks for Fraud's hand. "You were always like a brother to me." Lupita insists that he will get better. He thanks her for making him the happiest man on earth, happier, she's like an angel. "I love you." He strains forward to give her a final kiss, but slumps away at the last millimeter with such an air of finality that the heart monitor's flatline and long beeeeeeeep seem superfluous. (And useless too, since I don't hear the expected approach of rushing footsteps and crash carts.)

Lupita steals a final kiss while Alex's lips are still warm. His last flickers of thought are a montage of his song with images from their courtship. Lupita wails disconsolately, Fraud pats her shoulder awkwardly, and for once I'm grateful for a commercial break.

Next, the funeral. Alex is buried on a hill overlooking a pretty valley. Everyone in the world is there, crying, except I don't see Elena. (Tom is there, wearing a T-shirt that looks like a black dress shirt and tie. I'll cut him some slack for this because I sincerely believe it's the best he can do.) Ana tells Fraud she's sorry. Lupita puts the first rose on Alex's coffin.

(That's as much of that as I can take. Death scenes can be tough and wakes are no picnic either, but I really can't deal with burials. If anyone wants to add what the priest said, please feel free, you won't hurt my feelings.)

At home that night, Lupita shares the big comfy chair with Pancho and bitterly muses that she was married and widowed in the same day. Tomás, still wearing that stupid shirt, tells her he's sorry and she can count on him and he wishes he could take all of her pain on himself. (In the background, Temo is really overdoing the crying.) Everyone in the family promises their support. Rebeca says she's sure Lupita will find the strength to move on. Lupita stares vacantly.

Fred cries to Pina and says Alex was one of the few people who accepted him the way he was - annoying, selfish, arrogant. He was so different, so serious, always criticizing him. How can someone die so young? Fred wonders if Alex knew that he could die at any moment. He admits that he's sad for Lupita too. Pina encourages him to let it all out.

Violeta meets with Mónica and looks like she wants to tell her the big secret, but Moni is getting ready to go to school. Then Violeta remembers Enzo's begging/warning, thinks better of it, and leaves, saying they'll talk later.

Enzo goes to work and tells Arnold he's having trouble with Moni's mother. There's a big secret that Monica doesn't even suspect. It's something horrible.

Fraud looks miserable at breakfast. Meli asks if he's still sad about his friend. Ramona asks what happened to his friend; Meli says "I'll tell you later." She has a big smile on her face, not because Alex's death was so hilarious, but because Adoración is dancing around on a cloud. She's never been so happy in her life. She's in love. Pina hints around about the romantic dinner she's still planning to have with Vice. Vice gets another well-timed phone call, which he claims is from Enzo, but he takes it in another room. Pina follows him to listen.

It's actually Candy, asking how Fraud is doing and wanting to continue their conversation from the other day. She suggests that they meet for dinner tonight. Vice excitedly accepts. He spins around happily until he sees Pina. I don't think she overheard anything. She claims to be looking for her Flores de Bach. She leaves, and he finishes making his plans with Candy. He hangs up the phone by jabbing it repeatedly with gusto.

Lupita takes her rings off and lets them clatter to the floor. She shreds her veil with scissors. (She does not give herself a stunning haircut like Lucero did in STuD.) Pancho comes in to talk to her. "Why do I always lose the people I love, Papa?" He reminds her of the kids that count on her at the daycare, and her family, all of whom adore her. Rebeca offers her unconditional support and friendship. Chela stands in the doorway and looks depressed to see Lupita and Pancho huddling together with Rebeca instead of her.

Vice is looking for his phone. Pina has already found it, and reads the text on its screen: "I'm waiting for you on the corner Vicente, what's up?" He finds his phone and she plays dumb. But she very much doubts he's going to meet Rinaldi. She follows him.

The Chamigos encourage Pancho to have a drink, but not too much. They talk about Chato's love life. He's in love with Adoración; she's the other half of his orange. And Chucha? "She's my half-watermelon!" Hahahahaha. Better not let her hear you say that.

Vice picks up Candy and they share a big kiss on the sidewalk before she gets into his car. Pina sees the whole thing.

We're now on our second round of mezcal and Chato says he's thinking of asking Ado to marry him. Blah blah blah. Pancho says he's grateful to have friends who cheer him up but he's worried about Lupita. And Chato's kids are definitely going to be ugly.

Pina is crying at home. No Flores de Bach will relieve this pain. Vice and that horrible nasty disgusting woman Candy, who else? How could she be so stupid? And to think Sandra tried to warn her. She had to see it with her own eyes to believe it. Hugging and kissing.

Moni tells Pepe about that strange meeting with her mother this morning. She asks if he'd mind if she went to see Fraud. He says he's okay with it, though his face says something else after she leaves.

Enzo goes to the Lopez house and is met at the door by a very surprised Mónica. He says he's come to pay his respects to the family, especially Pancho. She is skeptical. She asks what's up with her mother, she's acting strange, but he has no comment.

Vice tells Candy that with Fraud in pieces over his best friend's death, it's a bad time to ask his mother for a divorce. Candy agrees. And she's still uncomfortable with being a homewrecker. He assures her that it his marriage was already a wreck; has been for a long time. This would have happened sooner or later. She thinks she should have stayed out of it. They agree to carry on in secret. What Pina doesn't see won't hurt her.

If only there were some way Pina could un-see. Ado lets slip that she knew. Pina is furious. This is the worst moment of her life, Ado is the only person she can talk to, and she begs her not to lie. But Ado is saved by the doorbell.

Lupita is crying in her room, surrounded by tissues and photos of herself and Alex. Tomás offers support again and she says thanks, but she doesn't feel like talking. He says they don't have to talk about anything. She says she doesn't understand God. He gives her Alex, makes them fall in love, they get married right in front of him, and then he takes Alex away. Why? Tom says it's a test; that's what they say. No one can comprehend; or maybe she'll understand someday.

"Tomás, I don't feel like living."

Next time:
No idea. The avances were cut off. But at least we're back to one hour again now.

Julie- Just got home to find your part 1. That was a perfect place to end things, before everything took a nose dive, or just before I clutched my box of tissues and didn't let go till the episode was over. This a great start!

You're right. The color of the bridesmaid dresses did look good on them all. And Lupita was a beautiful modest bride. I'm glad Elena wasn't invited to be a bridesmaid. She is a terrible friend and has been trying to break up Lupita and Alex since the beginning. I noticed that later on she didn't even show up at the hospital or the house to support Lupe.

Wow! I was really surprised that Pina is pregnant. It's a bit late now for Candy to feel guilty. What does she want? Does she really think that she and Vince can continue on this way? Actually, when this affair with no sex started, I thought for sure it would be Candy pushing for Vince to get divorced so that they could go public. I'm surprised that it was Vince who decided to give up all the material things he loves to be with Candy, while she is the one hesitating.

I am looking forward to reading your recap of the second episode. However, I'm not looking forward to reliving such a sad episode. :(

One more thing. Friday’s emotional episodes got me thinking about the word querer, since it was used so much. We know that querer has many meanings (to want, desire, like, love). It is the “love” definition that is often difficult for us to translate because we know it can mean something greater/deeper than “like”, but not romantic love. We often say we don’t have a word in English that captures this. But we do. That word is cherish. It’s a word we only use in wedding vows (to love and cherish), and in that Madonna song. But otherwise, this is a word that has fallen out of use in everyday English and therefore never really comes to mind when we are trying to translate one character telling another, be it a friend, lover, ex-boyfriend/girlfriend, family member, etc., how much they “querer” them.
Cherish definition: treasure, value, prize, appreciate, relish, take pleasure in, esteem, attach importance to, revere, hold dear, feel affection for, keep fondly in mind, protect and love, show great tenderness and affection.
Etymology: early 14c., cherischen, from O.Fr. cheriss-, extended stem of chierir (12c., Mod.Fr. chérir) "to hold dear," from chier "dear," from L. carus "dear, costly, beloved". Related Spanish words: caro, cariño.
What a wonderfully complex word! Almost as complex as querer. I propose that we think more about the word cherish and who in our lives we would apply the word to. This exercise has also given me a deeper appreciation for the word querer, and has expanded my definition and understanding of the word. Querer: to want, desire, like, love, AND cherish (and all that implies).

Thank you so much Julie for this great part one. It was actually the best part before all the other stuff happened.

Vivi-ITA with you about Elena. She was so sour. If she felt that way she should have stayed home. I too had tissues.

Pina being pregnant was a surprise. I really think she should have told Vins right away. Candy has always felt guilty about Pina. As long as I've watched this she has always told Vins she didn't want to be the cause of his marriage breaking up, even though that has been the case. At least she has a consceince. I like that about Candy. I am glad they never did the deed.

I wonder what else Enzzo hasn't told Moni about her mother. Enzzo begged Violetta not to tell her.

Loved Meli and Temo at the wedding. Temo's hair even looked good for a change.

And Chela, you would think she would have been happier at the wedding.

I too am looking forward to the rest of your great recap, even though like Vivi said, it is very sad.

Querer=Cherish - wow, Vivi! Good one!

Madelaine - I agree Chela should have looked happier at the wedding, but we've been watching this thing long enough to know that Chela is NEVER happy!
EVER!!

I still need to read the recaps and comments from the last few days. I'm dying to find out if anyone noticed/mentioned that Pepe kept looking at Violeta's boobs. Poor kid, you can't blame him... it would have been impossible to look away.

Speaking of which, I think Candy's dress was a little too small for her.

This one's for you, Vivi:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NwAjGsuyF2M&feature=related

I think you captured the essence of that word.

And I didn't see this story going that way at all!

Urban- How could I forget that old song?! Yes, it is a perfect song that captures the meaning of the word. The thing is, of all the Spanish classes I have taken, and all the definitions of querer I have seen, never once has a professor or a dictionary mentioned cherish for querer. And yet, it is a perfect definition.

Tk you Julie,
This is a comedy????? so why was I sobbing like a fool.

Lupita looked beautiful. I suggest she give her dress to Ana Paula.

That color of the bridesmaids dresses is the only color that looks good on everyone, blonds, brunettes, redheads, light & dark skin.

UA, I LOVE that song.

Variopinta, I did say Comedy was taking a holiday. I guess it took off with Lupita's plane tickets to Hawaii.

If you (anyone) need a laugh, all I can offer is this. Or if you have a little more time, this - my favorite episode.

Okay, I know you haven't recapped part 2 yet, but I have to jump to that because AAAAAAARRRRRRRRRGH!

What fresh hell is this?! Not Alex! This is supposed to be a comedy! I watch it for a happy escape! And they kill off my favorite character??? I felt like he had so much story left in him. I still wasn't over Iñaki's death, and now this? Alex, we hardly knew ye. Rest in peace.

Lupita looked very beautiful, and Alex was even more handsome than usual. How much do his parents suck, though? They weren't with him when he died, and I don't think they were even in the waiting room when the doctor talked to everyone else. Where did they go?

Speaking of people who kind of suck, I did not that IMMEDIATELY after her husband's funeral, the family was telling Lupita to cheer up, everything will be fine. Give the poor lady some time to grieve, sheesh. She should take that trip to Hawaii just to get away from them for awhile and mourn in peace.

Okay, I have to get back to more cheerful things now. Thanks so much for the recap, Julie. I appreciate the humor in part 1. The Pancho doll that Kati bought was funny. I also got a kick out of Pina waving that pregnancy test around and touching everyone and everything with it. Didn't she supposedly just pee on that thing?

I feel bad for Pina thinking a new baby will save her marriage. At least she'll have another kid to keep her busy when Vins leaves, right?

Julie, I've noticed that Pepe seems to check out most of the ladies. Even his sisters, occasionally. He's great at playing a flirt but maybe it comes a bit too naturally.

Vivi, thanks for your thoughtful discussion of querer/cherish. It is a nice word. I think it's fallen out of common use because it sounds embarrassingly sentimental, cursi I guess, to a lot of people. But it is a better translation of querer.

Alex was the most perfect boyfriend ever. He was too perfect to live. He was carried away by the angels... because they were jealous that he was making them look like slobs.

You realize this throws a HUGE monkey-wrench into the story... we all assumed that Tomás was going to move on and find some nice skank to settle down with. Or maybe improve himself just enough to be worthy of someone like Celeste. But now (well, not NOW now, but before long) Lupita will be on the market again. It is nearly impossible to envision anyone, least of all Tomás being able to fill Alex's perfect shoes. Even with a good haircut.

Vivi-thank you also for the querer-cherish defintion. It is so appropriate for the way the world is today. We are always so busy we sometimes don't take the time to cherish those we should.

Julie, you did a great job with this episode, comedy certainly did take a holiday. What a great conversation this sad turn has brought up. Seems like they decided Alex was too good to stay in the plot. I wept like a child which one doesn't expect to do for a comedy. Thanks Julie for such a happy description of part I. I didn't see this coming until the previews the night before so if the writers wanted to shock the audience with an unexpected turn, they have succeeded beyond imagination.

Vivi, your querer-cherish was very thoughtful. Querer does seem like such a rich word of cherish, like, care for and other nuances.

I am glad we are taking this in with two parts. What a jolt to have the plot turn so dark.

Love the 'cherish' explanation. Thank you.

I cherish Pina. Her character may be over the top, but at heart, she is one traditional, warm-hearted woman with old-fashioned family values.

Who is older? Lupita or Ana?

Candy needs to wear a cone hat and sit in a corner.

Call me a cynic but I am just very curious about what better job opportunity caused the guy who played Alex to have to leave the show so suddenly that he got engaged one day and married and killed off the next. Anybody got a good way of finding out?

Thank you for the recap, Julie. I agree with others who have said that you ended it at just the right point in the episode.

I sniffled a bit during this part as well...but they were more like nostalgic "my baby is growing up sniffles." Part 2 was filled with heart-wrenching "why? why? why?" sobs.

Having not watched for very long: Am I supposed to feel bad for Pina? Vince's affection for Candy seems pretty legit and several of you have mentioned that the two of them have not "done the deed." On the other hand, I have felt a little bad for PIna the last two days as she weeps and moans "sola. sola. sola" ad infinitum.

Melinama- I looked at Lucas Velasquez's (Alex) bio on Esmas. He is not Mexican. He's a Colombian actor, singer and dancer who does most of his work in Colombia. This is only the second show he's done in Mex and the other one was also a small role. Perhaps he has no intention of settling in Mex as an artist and wanted to get back to his life in Colombia? He did do 100 episodes, which is almost a whole telenovela. If he had stayed for the entire show that would have been more than a year of commitment to be away from home. I'm only guessing here.

Anon- In the show Lupita is just a little older than Ana. But in real life the Lupita actress is 6 years younger than the Ana actress (20 and 26). She was likely 18-19 when they filmed these heart wrenching scenes of her becoming a young widow, which I think is the age of her character.

Sara- In the beginning, we did not like Pina. She was cast as a snobby, controlling harpy. But she has always been eccentric and funny. As time has gone on, we've seen that the snobbery is just a front, that she is indeed hilarious, that she is very lonely, and that she has a big heart that most times overcomes her snobby front. She is a woman with a lot of love to give, but right now not enough people to give it to, or who want it (ie Vince). Because of this, most of us feel for her and even like her now, although we don't always agree with her way of thinking.

Thanks Vivi--I won't feel so bad for feeling bad for her then ;-)

CHF, Interesting theory about Luke Velasquez (Alex) and with what info Vivi added, it could be he didn't want to drain away his young life so far from home. I had been thinking they needed a way to get Tomás story line back in the running for renewed romance with Lupita and that does seem to be happening. Either way it is a major bummer that we lost the sweetest, purest love Lupita will ever find. I am not enamored of Tomás' ability to be faithful but don't mind watching his rippling muscles. I actually liked the sweet way he interacted with Pina, very caring even though she insults him and she did come around her snobbiness enough to comfort him when he found out Lupita would marry Alex.

In TN's which death shocked/or upset you besides this one? The first TN I watched was CS09. The death of Maria del Rosario was it for me. The scene with Juan del Diablo and his mother on the beach when he was holding her and talking to her as she is dying was so heartbreaking, I used a box of tissues for that one. Also when Cesar in PVAA was killed was another one, even though you knew he would come to a bad end, but in prison not dead.

Hi Julie...I couldn't read your recap, and I won't be able to read Part II...I'm just too upset! Don't want to relive one single minute of Friday night...though I do agree the turquoise color of the bridesmaids' dresses was lovely...now if they'd just left off that fussy bow at the bodice, the dresses would have been elegant as well.

Was amazed at what a looker Lupita is with make-up and a grownup hairdo. Quite stunning.

Pina broke my heart last night, along with Alex. Her loneliness and desperation to regain Vince's love is excruciating to watch.

Yikes, where's the comedy indeed? And your irritation with the family platitudes of "don't cry, get over it immediately" is so understandable. Jeez.

Vivi, thanks for that beautifully written meditation on "querer". I will indeed think about the people I cherish today. You are one of them. So is Julie!

Madelaine- Like Julia, and many others, the death of the young, handsome, sweet Iñaki in En Nombre del Amor was the hardest to get over, in addition to being shocking. Alex's death ranks right up there, and they have similar personalities and played a similar role in the life of a young heroine.

Like you, I found the death of young Cesar in PVAA to be very sad. He was really asking for it, but the affect it had on his poor mother was what made that death so painful.

Aw! Judy! That's so sweet!

I'm all caught up on comments and whatnot and ready to start working on Part II. If I can keep distractions at bay (doubtful) it shouldn't take long.

Regarding the last few days' recaps and comments:

THANK YOU Vivi and Sylvia for filling in on Wednesday night. It's amazing that you two can be so funny, so fast. (I'm glad someone explained soda in a bag... the night of the big fiesta at the university campus, when Pepe changed the music, Frauddie complained that it was "more naco than drinking soda out of a bag" and I didn't know what he was talking about and I think I translated it with my best guess, drinking out of a juicebox.)

Julia - I love "Chamigos."

I agree with everyone who thought a little girl was a strange choice for a pre-lust serenade.

Anon #1, glad your CC3s got sorted out!

OK, so about the untimely and freakishly speedy departure of Alex. You notice that Nico disappeared just a few weeks earlier. I think (this is only a guess) that it was probably around this time that "they" decided to extend the show. The actors who played Nico and Alex probably already had plans to do something else after the show was originally scheduled to end, and when they found out it was going long they gave notice and then were sent home early rather than be kept around for the rest of their planned stint.

That's what I figured for Nico, anyway. But Alex was written out so quickly (the entire engagement story arc was FIVE EPISODES... Alejandra Guzman's story arc lasted longer!) that you have to wonder.

I wonder if it was always planned that Alex would die eventually, just not this soon.

On the bright side, I think we're done with Alejandra for now. Nothing against her personally, but enough was enough already.

AND to answer Madelaine's quesiton about most upsetting TN deaths, one that really bothered me was Ana Martín's character in STuD. Not that that show was worth watching again anyway, but she was such a sweet and caring character and her death (fell/pushed off a balcony) so unexpected, in a TN with so little joy in it to begin with, that it was hard to get past it.

I decided to torture myself again, simply because I wanted to see the wedding again. The bridesmaids dresses, Chela & Monica were strapless, as was Ana at first but maybe she had a wardrobe malfunction, by the wedding she & Candy both had straps on their dresses.

Pobrecita Pina.

Seems that this TN is losing popularity according to TV y Novelas.

Would like to hear what Jarocha has to say about the Mexico audience.

Found this great site to watch,

http://novelasyseries.univision.com/

you can't watch ahead though but very clear.

------------
I had the same thoughts today, Vario. I can't imagine maintaining interest in a TN for a year.

Variopinta- Seems you could call Familia a huge success if it's only starting to lose popularity now, almost a year into being on air in Mexico. Good for them. The sponsors (Big Mix, Avon) must be happy.

If they wanted it to stay popular, they shouldn't have killed off their most intriguing #1 eye candy. What in heck do they think we tune in for? Not to watch Temo act precocious, that's for sure.

Iñaki's death was terrible, but that was a dark drama with one main protagonist couple and he wasn't "it" so it wasn't totally unexpected. A death like Alex's, out of nowhere in an ensemble comedy, is more shocking.

I did really like the scene where Freddy was crying and Pina was trying to comfort him. Pina was the sort of warm, empathetic person she can be when she doesn't resort to snark, and Freddy acknowledged that Alex was a much better person than he is, in general and also in being his friend unconditionally even though he didn't deserve it.

I wonder if Elena will come around at all on her attitude toward Lupita, or if she'll selfishly be glad Lupita isn't getting everything she wants.

I think TV y Novelas tracks the ratings in Mexico right, not the U.S.? Or am I mistaken? Meaning, the ratings drop came long after Alex's death in Mexico.

I liked the scene with Pina and Freddy too, and the scene in the hospital when Pina and Vince hugged Freddy. Freddy has grown a lot in the last two weeks. I think he has really become a better person. The only person who hasn't improved is Elena.

Part 2 is up. Arrrrgh. Alex's death was bad enough; I don't know why they had to add Pina's heartbreak as well.

I don't place much importance on the ratings, either in Mexico or in the US. FELS was a huge ratings success, while Pasión was a dud. It's obvious that I don't have much in common with the intended audience.

Of course, good ratings usually translate to extensions, and bad ratings sometimes mean a speeded-up resolution, so in that sense they are interesting. But I've given up any hope that good or bad ratings will have anything to do with whether or not I'll like a show.

Julie, thanks for part 2. I'd forgotten some of the other stuff that went on, I was so distraught over Alex and poor Lupita.

Tomás means well and really he isn't doing a bad job of offering sympathy to Lupita (at least he isn't telling her to cheer up!), but he should really get over to the other house to comfort Pina, and leave Lupita to someone else.

One tiny correction: Chato called Chucha his half-watermelon (sandía). 'Cause she's big, hahahaboo.

Thank you for the part 2 Julie. I'm sure it was difficult.

Um...do regular viewers know what the Violetta/Enzzo secret is?

No, we don't. Some of us think it might be that Enzo isn't Moni's biological father, but that's just a guess. I also wonder about the circumstances that led to Violeta being sent to the psychiatric hospital. Maybe something big happened?

I wasn't completely on board with the theory about Enzo not being Moni's father before, but that last argument with Violeta changed my mind. It was the way he took so much offense to her insinuating that he didn't care about Mónica.

But if he really wants the secret to stay a secret, then he probably shouldn't confide in Arnold.

Speaking of secrets, I may have missed something during the first hour. Fernanda's detective told the doctor that a nun had come forward with some information. Was that old information we already know, or was he talking about something we haven't heard yet?

Julia, thanks for the sandia correction. I should have recognized that because Los Jarritos Sándia soda used to be one of my favorites. (Haven't seen it in a while.) But I've got sandwiches on the mind.

I did not understand the conversation between Enzo & Violeta at all, but it seems it made an impression on Violeta. She is different toward Monica. Must be a warning from Enzo.

BTW Violeta is Sebastion Rulli's ex.

Thank you Julia. I just wanted to make sure. I hope no one minds me asking. I don't have the stamina to go back and read all the recaps. :-)

I'm thinking more and more that our theory about Enzo not being Moni's bio-dad is correct. And if he isn't, what happened to bio-dad and will he make an appearance? Maybe he died and that's what caused Violeta's breakdown. Violeta and Enzo seem to bring out the worst in each other. They should spend as little time with each other as possible.

What happened to Moni moving in with Pepe? Seems like she put that idea aside after Violeta showed up. With the death of Alex, it's probably not a good time for Pepe to move out of the Lopez house anyway. By the way, I didn't think the look on Pepe's face after Moni left to see Freddy was troubling. I think it was just concern for Lupita and Freddy, the two people most hurt by Alex's death. He really understood how he would feel if Tomas died like that.

Variopinta- Yes, someone else mentioned that Violeta is played by Sebas Rulli's ex. He's really tall and so is she. Their kids must be super tall! And good looking. Wow!

I think the information was new to the detective and the doctor. The nun had found a photo of the medallion that Fernanda's baby was wearing. So now they just have to find the person who has that medallion! Easy task in Mexico City, right? Assuming the guy is still in Mexico City area 40 years later (we know he's around, but they don't). Now, why the nuns would keep track of that, and not keep a record of where the adopted children went, is a mystery (or do we know how they lost track of him? I didn't watch the first few weeks).

I think our show takes place in Toluca, in Mexico State, but not in D.F. Still, Toluca is a big city too. It's amazing how evertime Fernanda has seen Lupita, she's had her medallion covered up. But every other day, she has it openly displayed. ;-)

Duh, I should have remembered that from the big "Estado de México" label they put up constantly. I guess somehow I thought people were going back and forth constantly. Which wouldn't be at all efficient, but on telenovelas characters constantly zip around the D.F. like traffic is no issue and you can get anywhere in 10 minutes.

Thank you so much Julie for part two of this recap. Alex's death was so heartbreaking and so unexpected. I used almost a whole box of tissues. Poor Lupe to get married and be a widow on the same day. Where was Elena? She is supposed to be Lupe very best friend, like a sister and she never bothers to show up. I loved how Tomas was there for her.

Frauddie surprised me, so much emotion and he wasn't being his usual Frauddie self.

And Pina I feel really bad for her. To be pregnant and not knowing about Candy and Vins. I wish she hadn't followed Vins.

I liked the hug and support Lupe got from Rebe and Pancho. Chela should move on already.

I almost laughed when Frauddie said Alex was his best friend. Near as I can tell, Alex was his ONLY friend! No wonder he's sad. He's got no one to talk to now except his little cousins.

Sorry, I forgot to add:

Remember from recent episodes that Vicente knows something about the secret. Although, he didn't know Violetta was still alive, so I'm totally speculating here.

NO SPOILERS ON THIS BLOG!

It's tempting to discuss things we've heard, but this is a spoiler-free zone. Putting spoiler alerts in isn't enough; if it hasn't aired on Univision, it's off-limits. We just have to wait and see.

Speculation is okay, though, as is discussing what's been show in previews on Univision.

Sorry to get a little yelly there, but this is a strict rule on this site, as is the no-celeb-gossip rule.

I hope you'll join in non-spoilery discussion, though, Amber! We love to hear from readers and enjoy different perspectives!

Oh, I'm so sorry! I didn't know...I apologize if I gave too much away!

Spoiler deleted. Amber, I'm sure it was an honest mistake, but we all know where we can find spoilers if we want to see them. It's nice not to have to worry about them here.

Come on ya'll, pull it together......I know this is suppose to be a comedy, andin the US, our comedys never have people die. At least not on the screen.....Two and a half men being an example. But Mexico is a different country with a different culture.
Just watching the evening news will give insight to the many problems Mexico is having. To mix comedy and tragedy in a single TN, serve as a reminder to the folks how quickly joy can turn to sadness.

It just so happened that I saw the show Friday night. As you all know I am into the female characters on this show, but the Sudden death of Alex was a surprise.

By the way Vivi, I saw the "Amazon", Violeta, and is looking forward to following this character. She is the complete package. She is taller than Rebe, weapons as massive as Candy, a butt lift from Brazil, and even though she seems to be as mean as a rattlesnake, she is kinda cute.

Life and this Telanovela goes on

C'mon, Anon#1, let us indulge in a melodramatic moment of grief. It's cathartic!

I must say, the crying in this episode didn't bug me too much. It was realistic and intense in its way, but not the histrionic displays actors put on in some shows. I hate those, where the person is howling and screaming. Maybe some people really do react like that, but in my actual life experience it's usually more of an attention-grabbing act.

I read a line somewhere once that has stuck with me...

"He was a nice person, and cared about people, but what he cared about most was the drama of caring."

That definitely applies to a few of the look-at-me-mourning types I have encountered.

But Lupita and Freddy and the others looked more genuinely distraught.

Very apt title for the recap of Friday's episode. I missed Thurs. and the 1st part of Fri., so when I saw Alex and Lupita go from proposal to altar in two episodes, my first reaction was, "Uh-oh, this has been too easy, too fast, something bad is going to happen." But I thought it was going to be along the lines of Tomas making a scene or someone getting cold feet. I was really surprised by the death of Alex.

Interesting also that when Pina finally, unmistakeably gets proof of Candy and Vice's affair, it wasn't played as a farce, as with all the other almost-caught times.

I'm curious to see if the show takes on a darker and less comic tone in future episodes.

Just like when Fafy Cuenca died in that other TN, part of me still thinks that this is someone's bad dream and they'll wake up tomorrow night and everything will be fine. Maybe they'll even find Patrick Duffy in their shower, safe and sound.

Julie, gracias for a detailed recap. Perfect title. So sad for Lupita and Pina.

I don't know where this is headed for Lupita and Tomas, but I hope they stay just friends. Tomas is still so much of a man-boy and that T-shirt says it all.

I noticed when Ana reached out her hand to Frauddie's at the burial that Pina intercepted Ana's hand. That was pretty cold.

I'm glad Pina found out about Vince and Candy before she told him about the baby. Most of her anger seemed directed at Candy, but in truth Vince left her long before Candy.

I need comic relief/eye candy. I hope undershirt doc returns.

Julie, thanks for taking one for the team. I loved Part 1 and got thoroughly incensed with Part 2. What happened to our comedy? The only normal male character has to flatline? This sucks. I hate that Tomas might renew a relationship with Lupita. He'll only break her heart again. It's not like he's a different person or anything.

Vivi, nice job on comparing querer to cherish. It's something very interesting and positive to think about. I like the word even though it feels old-fashioned these days. Let's revive it!!

Urban A, Cherish, the first song I ever slow-danced to. Seventh grade, my first dance, with Robbie Wert. And the first thing that came to my mind when Vivi mentioned Cherish. Music is a very strong memory trigger.

I'm going to cut the men some slack as regards Violetta's boobs. She's such an amazon her chest is at eye level for most males in the cast.

Julie, thanks again for your very sensitive and observant recap. You have a unique talent for watching the different characters and picking up on their reactions and emotions.

Boo hoo, I miss Alex, even though he's probably doing a great gig in Columbia.

Niecie, I did NOT notice Pina intercepting Ana's hand... good catch. Thanks!!

Julie - There was so much going on at the same time, everybody's reaction to the tragedy, but I tend to watch Pina like a hawk.

Julie, Cheryl, Melinama, Ezra, Julia, Jim - Thanks for all the double duty you've been doing. I couldn't have kept up without you.

BTW I just saw on article on Bing (the search engine for MSN) that said the ratings for Familia are up here in the States along with No Podia. Uni is now ranked #3 as of last week, and is #1 on Friday nights. It also stated that the audience for Famila is growing. It may be due to the new CC's in English, I don't know but the audience is growing.

A few vocab notes from Thursday and Friday:

amonestación - warning

apechugar - to cope, to grin and bear it

engarrotarse - to stiffen

rocanrolear - to rock 'n' roll

congoja - distress, anguish, grief

salado - jinxed

pulida - polished, refined

caducar - to expire

And one I'm having a little trouble pinning down exactly:

no cantar mal las rancheras - means to not be terrible at something, but varying sources disagree as to whether it means to be just minimally capable, to be the same as everyone else, or to be better than one would expect.

Freddy, Alex & Lupita's hands touching in the hospital might be a sign of things to come between Lupita & Freddy. Freddy also touched her shoulder very tenderly. I can't see her ending up with Tomás, unless he gets a makeover. I thought Lupita's display of grief was very realistic.

Ana Bábara didn't last very long either, 1 episode?

TV & novelas gave Famila 2 1/2 stars, Podía 4 stars.
It gives kudos to Rebeca, Ana, Lupita & Alex, but critical of Pancho & Pina.
I like it better than they do, but I think Pancho overdoes it with the cackle.

Sometimes I think the TV y Novelas critics don't even watch these shows. They don't like Pina?! I do agree Pancho overdoes the cackle and the nasal folksiness. And Podía isn't more entertaining than Familia. I seem to recall they really hyped FELS also.

I can't imagine Lupita falling for Freddy. Agreeing to go out with him in a "nothing matters anymore" depressive funk, maybe. Getting friendlier with him because he's the only one missing Alex as much as she is. But he's no Alex and she knows it. Tomás hasn't changed much, either. He needs to move on. How about (eventually) someone totally new for Lupita.

Pina is one of the shining stars in this show. The critics are idiots sometimes.

Lupita with Frauddie would seriously make me barf and would mean a complete personality transplant on her part. I don't like that combo. I hope she's moved on from Tomas too. Of course he will try because he and his sister are stuck on self-pity, and I guess I can't blame him because Lupita is wonderful. But I agree with Julia, I'd like to see her with someone different. Time to introduce a new boyfriend, someone hot and sweet.

The critics like Robot Rebe over Pina?! They are smoking something. Yeah, I don't put much stock in what the critics say, or even how well or not a show did in Mex or its country of origin. Shows and characters resonate with individuals or groups of people for a number of different reasons.

Just cked last months TV y Novelas,
Familia got 4 stars. They were complementary of Rebeca & a little critical of Pancho: "hace gala de su comicidad natural, aungue momentos de exceso caricaturesco". I have to agree, but he does have wonderful comical facial expression.

Can we please get Luis Hacha back to play Lupita's next love interest? It's only fair. And he looks young enough that I don't care that his real age is almost twice Lupita's.

I'm fully supportive of that idea Julia. :) Somebody bring him back from Spain!
