La Que No Podía Amar #58 Friday 3/16/12 A Family Affair or Gus Who’s Coming To Dinner

As we return to the frigid and more remote wilds  boondocks of Chiapas, Ana Paula’s angry slap across Hubby-in-Name-Only, Rogelio’s, face--satisfying for all of us as it was--is only the beginning of this screech-fest.  Ro-Hell’s obliging lip-lock on the public square in San Gabriel with Paula’s own flesh and blood sister is practically akin to incest for gawd sakes!  Her own sister!  Rog tells her she’s full of it cuz she wasn’t raised with the woman and they don’t seem even remotely alike.  His puppy-dog eyes begin to twinkle ever so slightly, though, as he states to Pau her problem is she’s jealous!

In Tuxtla, Efrain runs into Macaria at a little shop.  He stoops down to help her pick up some dropped souvenirs (no doubt sneaking another gander at her voluptuous upper torso) and he mentions he’s been fired from the hacienda.  He’s thinking of doing some sightseeing with them, maybe, in Mexico.   Ulises sees no problem with it and says sure thing, buddy.  Mi familia es tu familia.

Back at Hacienda del Fuerte in AP’s bedroom, Pau tells Rog it isn’t jealousy cuz this what-ever-it-is isn’t love!  No!  Hatred is all she feels for him, she sneers back.  He rolls after her and reminds her of the old Spanish saw that hate is only a step away from love.  Paula says it’s a step she’s never taking with him!  He tells her to cut it out.  If he let himself go while kissing Vanesa, it was because he was angry with her.  He’s frustrated that nothing he does for her ever seems to be appreciated or considered worthwhile.  She reminds him he needs her to appear the adoring wife in front of Don Abel and warns him that if he ever tries to publicly humiliate her again like that it doesn’t matter how many contracts or rules he’s got!!  She’ll never pretend to be the happy little missus Montero ever again!!!!  He gives her a “yes, Dear” look of repentance and then allows himself a teeny, tiny secretive smile of triumph.

At Casa Duran, meanwhile, Guscakes and Cinthia come bouncing in to tell Big Sis, Mercedes, that they’ve gotten back together and want her to join them for dinner, Gus’s treat.

A bit later that day AP gives Rosaura the third degree about why Nessa accused Rosie of blackmailing her mother, Elsie La Vaca.  Mentirosie tries lying her way out of it accusing them to be capable of any type of slander.  Paula says it’s not as simple matter of mud-slinging.  Pau realizes how worried her aunt’s always been about money.  Rosie loses patience and says there’s nothing wrong with wanting a decent life, especially after what she went through.  If her mother had had sufficient funds then she’d have gotten the treatment she needed and wouldn’t have died!  AP says she realizes there are times when it might be necessary, but still, Ro-Hell called Rosie a money grubbing female [interesado/a = calculating, mercenary, selfish].  “--All right!  I will tell you the truth!” (None of us in Viewerville are exactly holding our breath for this.)

Don Abel has arrived, meanwhile, and is now with Ro-Hell in the living room discussing the stockman’s association.   Don A considers it a great honor to have been invited to Hell-Fuerte.  (It won’t be long before he changes his mind, I’m sure.)  Rog explains that he’s been thinking over things since their last convo.  He’s always been reserved [huraña = shy, distrustful, unsociable] and not much for socializing.  However, now things are different and he views things otherwise.  He’s got some great ideas to help the membership prosper he believes.  Also, he’s thinking of his wife and thinks she’d appreciate associating and getting more involved with the rest of the community.  They drink to that.

Rosie lays it on thick for Pau, now, with a gush of crocodile tears, and tells her (in what Viewerville figures may be possibly the nth iteration) that she covered for her dear departed sister, letting everybody think she was Federico’s daily afternoon delight.  After all, AP’s mama might have been legally separated, but in the eyes of the community she was still a married woman!  Yes, Mentirosa suffered sacrificial humiliation to protect Pau’s dear departed mama’s reputation.  One day Elsa thus came to her and offered her money to leave her husband.  Of course, AP’s sweet mama never suspected a thing (and, probably never saw a penny of that pay-off, either!)  Tearfully, Rosie admits it was wrong never to have told Paula about it.  No, says AP, but she now understands why Rosie keeps pushing her at Rogelio Montero.  What’s the harm, asks Rosie, in having things nice and falling for the man that gives them to you?

The idea just doesn’t sit well with Pau, though, she admonishes.  Rosie tearfully offers to leave the premises and to return home if that’s the case.  (Ah, what would be the fun in that, Rosie?)  Before Pau can say more, Consuela comes in to inform her that Don Abel is in the living room with Ro-Hell who wants her to come out and join them.  Once Connie is gone, Pau hugs her red-nosed Tía Rosie and begs her to stay.  “--Calm down, Tia.  I was just curious about how things happened then.  No reason for you to leave.”  They hug and Mentirosie allows herself a small eye roll of relief.

Back in Tuxtla, Gustavo tells Mersnottys in between lots of syrupy smooches with Sinthia, that he has decided to go back to Hacienda del Fuerte with his renewed squeeze in order to formalize their relationship with Bro-Hellio.  No, he doesn’t know if he’ll be working for the guy, yet, cuz first he wants to clarify things about the two of them dating.  And, it’s important enough that they’re leaving that very afternoon.  Miss Mercy is all happy, happy, joy, joy!  Serious canon-like drumbeats go off in the background signaling the arrival and positioning of the first major anvil to fall.  (Viewerville is on the edge of every available seat in living rooms throughout in anticipation of the singular event.)

At the same time, Rog is discussing some mumbo-jumbo claptrap about greenhouse gases and turbines with Don Abel who is doing a great job at avoiding crossed eyes and pretending he actually understands any of it himself.  Pau walks in and assumes her role as amiable ama [housewife].  Whereupon, the other part of Sister Sledge, aka Vainessa, comes barging into the room with the sole intent of slinging sludge at Sissy.  Nessa ignores Oh-Hell’s question about WTF she’s doing there, and immediately ingratiates herself with the old guy by fawning all over him.  He gladly reciprocates. “—Oh, yes. You’re Don Federico’s daughter.”  “—Yes, that’s right—his ONLY daughter.”  Vainie turns around then and smiles evilly at Pau.  Pau stiffly dodges the daggers darting from Vainie’s glaring eyes and reminds her that Rog, her husband, has just asked her a question.  Nessa replies haughtily that Pau needn’t worry about her; she’s not staying to eat with them.  She doesn’t sit down at the table with bastards!!

In Tuxtla, Sin tells Mersnottys that she’s thrilled at the way Gustavo has taken the bull by the horns for her.  Smoochy, smoochy, coo.   Mersnottys says to make sure she explains to Bro-Hell that it’s because Gus is especially interested in her.  (Like Hell he is.  The look on Babycakes’ face says he’s still trying hard to make himself believe that!   Oh well, as Stephen Stills once crooned, when you can’t be with the one you love then might as well love the one you’re with.  It has become Esteban and Gustavo’s new mission in life.)  Sin is completely oblivious to the obvious as Viewerville bides it’s time in anticipation of the day she finds out she’s been previously punked by Paula!

Back at Hell-Fuerte, Pau explains to Don Abel that she is also Rich Feddy’s daughter.  Rog screams at Nessa for insulting his wife while Nessa mentally files her nails and disregards anything he’s saying.  Old Abe tries being civil as Pau lamely explains she’s also one of Feddy’s daughters.  Vainessa haughtily continues to deny and Pau reminds her that nothing can change the fact that they have the same blood running in their veins.  Nessa shakes her finger at Pau and screams back that she can’t prove any of that!  Rog breaks in and breaks it up.  He kicks Nessa out and orders Hugo follows her out to the door.  That lasts about a New York second cuz Nessa struts to the front door, immediately slams it shut almost on Hugo’s nose, then turns around and starts for the living room again.  (OMG! CATFI-I-I-I-I-IGHT!!!! CATFIGHT ALERT!!! HOT-DIGITTY DAMN!)

Rosaura,  whose big ears and even bigger mouth for once have been put to good use, comes racing into the grand hallway and screams at Vainessa to stop right there.  “—What the Hell are you (familiar ) doing?”  Nessa tells her (using the lord ‘n masterly familiar ) to shut it cuz she’s nothing more than that bastarda’s aunt, let alone anywhere near dueña status!!  Rosie lets Nessa in on a family secret: she doesn’t know things weren’t exactly the way Elsie’s led her to believe all these years.  “—Oh, Vainessa, if you only knew that you were really just your mother’s excuse for being able to keep hold of Federico!”  Nessa calls her a liar and starts to call AP’s mama a whore, but Rosie cuts her off before she can spit it out.  “--the only zorra [whore-bi!tch-slut] here is YOU!”  (A guttural cheer escapes from throngs of Viewerville throats.  Victory dances are being danced on ditsy tipsy tippy-toes.)   Bested, Vainie shuts her pie hole.  Clink!

In the living room again, AP apologizes for the untimely outburst and Rog reminds him of his history with Vainessa when she left him years ago right after his accident.  “--As it turns out, my wife is her half-sister.”  Ol’ Abel says he understands and that his lips are sealed.   Pau says it makes no never mind to her that she’s Feddy’s daughter, but for her hubby, well, you know…..  Rog says she has no reason to feel bad on his account and they both agree her daddy was one of the good guys.  The men drink a toast to Rog’s becoming association prez, but Pau resumes her role as wet blanket and excuses herself, saying she’s not exactly in celebratory mode now.  Abe starts to leave, but Rog stops him to discuss something further.

Out in the hall again, Rosie (who finally is on the side of truth and justice) snaps back that Nessa is strutting around here calling the hervidor [kettle] black!!  “You’re so quick to accuse your sister of going after married men when you’re doing EXACTLY the same thing!!”    Vainie yells back that AP stole Rogelio from her and she’s determined to get him back!  Rosie reminds Nessa that the man does not love her and adds that nothing justifies her having laid that lip-lock on him.  Just then Maria walks in with her tray of goodies and sees Nessa causing another major ruckus for Ro-Hell.  “—How could you have dared, Vanessa!”  Vainessa snaps back at her.  “—Get back to the kitchen, you simple-minded dolt!”  Rosie comes to Maria’s defense.  “—Who do you think you are, eh?”  Maria hands her tray to Hugo, who hasn’t been much use as anything more than a doorstop to this point, and starts helping Rosie drag the arrogant quean out of the house and onto the drive.  “—Get lost!  Scram!”  “—Let go of me!”  “—Nothin’ doin’, you tramp!!”  ¡¡&&???!!XX##¡¡****!!!

In another part of the hacienda, Daniela gives moral support to a teary-eyed Pau after hearing about the crap Vainessa just pulled on her.

Outside the hacienda, Nessa’s screaming that she can walk by herself, thank you very much!  The two older women gracelessly throw her skinny backside off the walk and onto the drive.  Maria screams after her.  “--Don’t you ever come back here again!”  Rosi yells orders to Hugo to stand by the door and guard it until the she-dog leaves.  They turn around, arm in arm, and walk back towards the house together.  They agree the vixen is only going to cause them trouble and that they did great joining forces to get her the heck outta there.  Everything’s grand till Maria suggests a toast and Rosie pulls rank.  Maria tells her to stuff it and gawd save her from ever being a mooch like Rosaura!

Vainy, meanwhile, tells Hugo she’s not leaving till she takes her very precious leave of Don Abel!  He walks out and she latches onto him immediately.  Don Abel doesn’t really accept her apology, but she couldn’t care less since she’s only pumping him for gossip and gets what she was after: the greatly satisfying news that Paula was totally bummed by Vainessa’s stunt.

Pau and Dani continue discussing Vainessa's impromptu act.  Rog rolls up and listens from the doorway just in time to hear Paula complain that of course that woman felt she had the right to waltz in like that because Rog responded the way he did to her kissing him!  Dani finally notices him in the doorway and scoots out.  Pau starts griping at him again for allowing Vainessa to take advantage of him (actually them both, I’d say) this way.  He says it was a shame, but he already explained why he let it happen.  In the meantime he’s informing her that tomorrow he’s having the district’s stockmen and their wives over so she can begin to get acquainted with them.  Everyone can see then that the only woman he cares about is her.  “— I don’t know how I’ll be able to play the doting little housewife tomorrow if I can’t stand to even look at you right now this very minute!”  Rog tries in vain to reason.  “—Have you ever stopped to think that if I kissed her it’s because you refuse to give me kisses yourself?”  “—My kisses aren’t part of your contract!” “—Yeah, you’re right.  They aren’t, but your being the perfect wife is!  And as such, I expect you to prepare everything for tomorrow night and for it to be exactly the way I like it!”  He does a wheelie and exits stage right.

That night, the Chio-Pet and Miss Mercy are at a shop discussing the great news about Babycakes bro and Sin.  Esteban shows up with flowers and shares a few with Mercedes.  Chio-Pet doesn’t like it one bit.  Once she’s gone, Chio gives Stevie a piece of her mind.  She’s jealous and admits it.  Oh, why, asks Naïve Steve.  He was only trying to cheer her up a bit due to the separation anxiety she’s got with Ernesto.  How about they go to his apartment and he fixes her a fabulous dinner?  They kiss and make up.  FF>>FF>>

In the metropolis of San Gabriel, meanwhile, Nessa lets off steam telling David and Bruno about the afternoon’s events.  Totally high-school and dangerously unnecessary.  Nessa doesn’t think so.  She not only made sure Don Abel would spread the word that Rog’s wife was a bastard, but she got him to confirm afterward that she got Paula’s goat.  And that made it all worthwhile.  Petty girl stuff as far as Big Dave’s concerned.  He warns her she’s got a major problem always wanting to come out on top like that.  No biggy, says Nessa.  BTW, she made an offer to the guy, Raimundo, who owns La Negra and he accepted.  She just has to put it in writing and tells Bruno he’ll have to make sure Raimundo signs the papers ASAP.  Dave says no problemo.  They have a meeting with him set for the next day.

Rog informs Maria that he plans now to go Tuxtla himself for Sinthia immediately after the dinner party ends tomorrow evening.  Maria’s bummed at the change in plans.

The next day, Michael informs Ro-Hell that he wants to quit therapy because the burden his sister feels in being so indebted to him is too much for Mikey.  Rog tells him it’s really less of a burden if he continues therapy and doesn’t drink.  She’s happier in the long run.  In fact, he’s planning on giving him a heavier workload in order to better clear his mind.  Mikey doesn’t argue.

In the kitchen, now, the women are trying to make Rog’s favorite chiles' rellenos dish or something.  Pau gripes about having to be forced to cook for the party.  Maria gets on her high-horse and leaves when Rosie arrives. Rosie, much to her surprise and disgust, gets roped into cooking the dish instead.  FF>>

Meanwhile, Bruno and Big Dave are still knocking back beers and discussing La Negra tho’ Nessa is long gone.  Seems Raimundo won’t be at the dinner that night, tho’ Abel (his brother?) will.  Big Dave worries that Rog will find out that the property is being put up for sale.  Bruno suggests they’ll have to make sure that Raimundo signs already, before Rog finds out in case Abel or somebody else spills the frickin’ frijoles first.  Problem is that Rog expects Bruno to be there at the dinner that evening.  They figure he can say he’s got to get to town to discuss the problem of keeping Mikey out of jail with David.  There’s a bail discussion which doesn’t necessarily fit here.  FF>>

Rog comes in to complain about Paula’s snitty attitude ruining the results.  What difference does it make whether she’s a happy cook or not as long as she’s a pleasant wife and hostess afterwards, she reasons?  Ok, he says, but the dish he wants made is too runny and missing nogada [a certain nut and spice mixture].  Paula makes fun of Mr. Macho giving orders to the women in the kitchen.

El Gusto and Sin arrive at the gates to the hacienda.  Gus explains to the guards he’s brought  Ms. Sinthia back.  She’s jumpin’ jackalopes through the jeep’s window!   “—Hurry up, boys!  I’m dying from the heat!”

Back in the kitchen, Ro-Hell surprises the women by adding the missing nogada to what they’ve made so far.  Paula acts pleasantly surprised at the results then says now it tastes like it's nothing but nuts!  She snidely dismisses him.

Conned and Mikey discuss how Ro-Hell has put Mikey in charge of redoing the entire fence for the hacienda and that it’s helped him not to think about drinking so much.   Connie shows him a design and asks if he might be able to do that in wood (I think.)  He says sure he can.  (Yawn.)  FF>>

Once the cooking is finished, Rosie and Pau come back to her bedroom.  Rosie complains about the chiles’ juice making her hands burn and AP tells her to wash them and put cream on them.  Talk turns to Pau getting dressed up for the meal.  Rosie tells her she can’t go looking like that to a fancy dinner party.  Pau pulls another tantrum and Rosie tells her to get over it already.  “Look.  We know he’s got his nasty personality traits.  You’ve got two choices: either be a sad sack or relax a little and enjoy the dinner.  It’s up to you.”  Pau makes another snitty face.

In another part of the hacienda, Rog is checking through paperwork in his office.  Maria comes in to say he’s got somebody wanting to speak to him.  “—Don’t tell me Vanesa is back”.  Nope. “--Then who is it?”  Gus galumphs in with a determined look on his face.  (Sorry, but Jose Ron does not do ‘angry’ well.)  “—It’s me.  Gustavo Durán!”  “—What in Hell are you doing here?”  “—We have to talk about Sinthia!” (The anvil winches up bit by bit into place.)

In San Gabriel, Los Malditos Banditos, are back conniving again. Seems Nessa got Raimundo to come down ten percent on the asking price.  They will all pony up what they can to take joint ownership of the ranch and make Ro-Hell’s life as difficult as possible.  Big Dave has a cash flow problem and suggests he can always con Rog into giving him cash to keep Mikey out of jail.  Nothin’ doin’, says Nessa!  She wants his BIL in jail to keep Paula giving Ro-Hell holy Hell, and to make sure that Paula suffers even more because of it.

Speaking of Holy Hell, Maria tells the anxious Sin that Gus has been giving it to Bro-Hell in spades.  Maria feels she should never have brought him with her.  Sin says he’s giving her her place and insisted on coming.  She goes to the door to eavesdrop.

Rog screams at Gus for going behind his back with his kid sis.  Gus insists they don’t have to explain every step they take nor will they.  They are adults and will act like it.  He agrees Sin isn’t a child, but Gus hasn’t been respectful of her, either.  Gus disagrees vehemently and says it’s because she is important to him that he’s come to stand up for her [dar la cara = also to face the consequences of one’s actions] and the both of them.  Bro-Hell reminds him that he dumped her to run back to the arms of his ex-girlfriend.  True, says Gus, and he could have two-timed Sin and then decided which one he cared for more, but he didn’t want to hurt her.  Sin understands this.  He didn’t hide it from her!   Bro-Hell accuses him of suddenly dating her again just because he’s wanting to work for the hacienda.  Not at all, says Gus.  “—I don’t know what kind of people you’re used to dealing with, but I could never do anything like that.  Besides, you saw my work before I started back with Sinthia and you liked it.  Anyway, I don’t need to work for you!  I can do very well on my own!”

Big Dave reminds Vainessa that she can’t let her rage get the best of her.  They can hurt Rog financially just as well.  As for Mikey, says Bruno, irrespective of whether he really stole that truck, he still has to go to trial for manslaughter and a judge will decide the outcome.  Whether it’s good or bad and he goes to jail for it depends on the attorney he has.  (Something tells me that Rog better forget about using Bruno as a cracker-jack of all trades criminal defense lawyer here, or he’d better hope that Mexico considers legal negligence punishable by law as well.)  Skeletor smiles as he tells her it will be his utmost pleasure ensuring that Pau’s brother ends up going to jail.

Back in Rog’s office, Gus explains that since he’s only started dating Sin, he’s not going to let her marry him tomorrow.  (Say what?)  That’s why they’ve started to date and get to know each other better.  Rog explains he doesn’t know her at all. No, says Gus, she wants her independence from Rog and that’s why she’s started working for a living.  Rog insists that what she really wants by going out with him is to get married immediately and to gain her half of the hacienda.   Gus interrupts him and says that’s old news.  He knows all about the inheritance and what’s involved.  Neither she nor he is in favor of that.  She didn’t want to return, but Gus insisted on it.  He’s more worried that she won’t love him or consider him because he doesn’t have money and hopes she realizes there’s more to life than money.  He hopes she can learn to love him as he is, but Rog can rest assured Sin will never lack for anything.   Rog snickers at his lack of giving her what she’s grown up accustomed to and how it sounds like the one who wants to get married tomorrow is Gus!   No, she may not have luxuries, but she’ll never lack at his level of income is all.

Before, Gus explains, he had to make a life altering decision and he didn’t want Sinthia getting hurt.  Now things are different and he doesn’t want the two of them angry at each other since he knows that he’s Sin’s only brother.  He wanted her and him to clear up their difference of opinion and patch things up.  However, Rog has got to realize that if she decides not to continue living at the hacienda it’s her choice and he’s got to respect that choice.

Sin is jumping for joy with Maria because Gus has stood up for her and Rog has given in.  Maria says that’s a good thing because her brother can’t have kids and the family would fall apart if the two of them couldn’t get along together.

Rog expresses his appreciation that Gus actually came to the hacienda to face him and face the consequences.  Most others would have just stayed back in Tuxtla.  Gus says he’s the type who confronts things head on.  Rog says that’s the way he likes things to be handled himself and does think he’s the kind of guy who merits a chance with his sister.  Gus says that having a sister himself he knows what it is to worry about what’s right for them in the long run.  Rog looks Gus straight in the eyes now.  “—Yes, well, Sinthia is my only family and I warn you [lo advierto] that I will always look out for her.”  (I guess the gauntlet for The Gus has thus been displayed and laid.)  Gus returns the steady stare and accepts the terms of the challenge.

Before Gus exits he says he hopes that Rog will tell Sin that he’s got nothing to worry about now.  Of course, says Rog.  Have her come in.  Rog tells him first that he’s giving a dinner party to celebrate his becoming president of the local Stockman’s Association and he’d be pleased to have him attend with his sister.  He’s using the occasion to introduce his wife and he’s glad Gus has come so he’ll have a chance to meet her as well.  “—It would be my pleasure!”

Back in Tuxtla, Chio-Pet notes how Esteban is great with kids. (Ehh!)  Esteban tells her he’s anxious to have kids.  She reminds him first comes love, then comes marriage, then comes time for the baby carriage.  Stevie is all for it.  FF>>

Out in the hallway at the hacienda, Gus tells Sin that bottom line he and Rog came to a positive agreement.  Now it’s her turn to face him.  He’ll go in with her if she wants.  No, she’ll do it alone.  They smooch and this time Margarito has snuck around the corner to watch.  He sees Gus making out with Sin.

Rog tells Sin he’s given Gus the green light.  Sin tells the Bro-Hell that Gus makes her feel differently than she ever has before.  By the look on his face he seemingly recognizes this as true luuuuhhv on his sister’s part.  She tells him that she wants to make her own decisions and if she returns to the hacienda it will be because she’s decided herself to do so and not because she’s being ordered to do so.  She wants to take charge of her life just as he does for himself.  (Maybe Rog and I could take Sin a bit more seriously if she was wearing something a bit more dignified, or at least, less strumpy?)  But no, Rog doesn’t put up a fight and Sin recognizes that she’s won the argument with him and smiles.  On the other hand, he warns her off of Vainessa and says she’s really only using Sin to get back at him for having married her sister.

Sin refuses to believe if of her BFF.  Rog says fine, and that he hopes in the end she doesn’t regret ignoring his advice and going off to work with her.  Just remember, he’s never leaving Pau’s side and if it comes to it she’d best know in advance.  One more thing, he says.  She will get her part of the hacienda when she meets the right man.  It’s not his decision to make; it’s their father’s stipulation.  So, don’t rush into things with Gustavo.  Let things take their course.  Whatever happens, it happens.  Ok?

We beam back to Mexico and get a glimpse of life in the fast lane with Ulises’s family and Effer …er…racing along in the rollercoaster.  He’s miserable!

Mgrito races back to Pau’s bedroom to tell Paula what he’s just witnessed, but she’s nowhere to be found.

The dinner guests have arrived.  Rog introduces Abel to Gus.  There’s a toast and then Rog tells Con to fetch his wife.  One of the guests drags Gus into a conversation about CO2.  Pau walks in all dolled up and dressed to the nines in emerald green.  She bends over to kiss Rog and to play up to him.  Her back is to Gus who's turned away from her and still speaking to the others about his frickin’ CO2.  Rog officially presents AP as his wife to the crowd in the room.  La Senora Montero smiles and looks around the room.  Gus turns around to get a good look at her.  He can’t believe his eyes.  It’s as if she’s frozen in time herself.    Cue the anvil!!

What a great title!!!!

I am still tired of the show as it it currently going. I figured it out last night: I hate keeping up with intrigues in English and I don't want to deal with them in Spanish either.

I HATE VANESSA. She is a Vaca of the first order.

And everyone is warning Cinthia, but she won't listen. I have no pity. And QTH was that shirt they put her in?

On a positive note: I love the many facial expressions of Jorge Salinas.

But, that was a gorgeous dress that AP was in, during the last scene when she saw Gus. And Rohell seems to be watching her reaction. Did he know Gus was Sir Gus? I think he strongly suspected and his hunch was confirmed.
What is with having Efrain hang out with Macaria's fam?
Can someone tell me, did Vain already by the water source ranch?

I can't wait to see what you compose Jardinera, you are so good at these.

Sinthia is very naive for someone her age. That is mostly her father's fault but Rogelio has some responsibility as well. I think he knows this, though.

She's not going to like finding out that Sir Gustavo once belonged to Lady Ana Paula.

I get to cover the dinner party, which I think will be the tortures of the damned for Ana Paula. However, she could see it as an opportunity to display grace under fire.

Vainessa is a snake in the grass. We have to hope she never breeds.

Efrain must feel adrift. He's lost his job and his home (thought that only be a monk's cell) in one swell foop. Ulisses' family is familiar to him. He might be able to get a job with them... which would enable him to dream of ice cream and cherries again (I'd say a larger portion this time).

Emarie- ditto AP at the party. Gorgeous dress and she looked great. You know Rohell totally knew that APs Gus and Cins Gus were one in the same.

And I'm scratching my head over Effer and Familia Marcaria, too. QTH?

BUT Tia and Maria were hilarious last night!

Gus who's coming to dinner? ROTFLOL!

Lots of important conversations last night, but they went by so fast! I'm going to read the Gato saved captions so that I can savor. Thanks Gato Viejo!

Audrey

I don't think Rogelio thinks the Guses are the same at all. I think he is watching his wife closely because he is super proud to show her off at the party. (And yes that lovely dress was super-elegant and Ana Brenda looked so dramatically regal with her hair severely pulled back like that.)

Do you really think that if Rogelio even suspected the Guses were the same, that he would let Gus set foot in the hacienda, let alone date his sister? He is a very jealous possessive man who already feels at a huge disadvantage with AP's ex-novio.

Audrey

I agree, Audrey. Sir Gustavo is likely to remind His Lordship of his own younger self. Who was highly successful with the ladies.

Ditto Audrey and UA. Rohell has no clue. He flips his lid at the mere mention of Gus the novio. He would never allow the same Gus within sniffing distance of the Cupcake. Plus he'd never knowingly hurt Sin like that by playing that game. Rohell is a sneaky SOB, but on this one thing he is very predictable.

Looking forward to the recap and love the title!

Vainessa has no shame whatsoever. Although I have no respect for Lord ShadyDeal I was pleased to see him annoyed with her for her behavior at Rogelio's place... and bragging about it.

Someone in the tack house at Rogelio's might be able to design a muzzle for her. Maria and Tia MentiRosa tossing her out was hilarious.

Jardinera! What a fantastic title to hit anyone who pulls up this page! It's the first thing I saw and had to comment on your brilliance! lol lol lol

Rosemary la Otra

Jardinera, fab title. Looking forward to your recap.

I don't get Vainy acknowledging Cupcake as her sister right in front of Rogelio's important guest. I thought she would have ignored the hell out of Cupcake as someone soooo beneath her level and follow her mom's advice to not let the world know she even has a half-sister. Maria and Tia joining forces to kick her out was too funny, especially with Hugo looking on. Kind of sweet the way he gentlemanly tried to throw her out without roughing her up.

UA - Agree about Efrain feeling adrift. I like that he is staying close to the Macaria family because I fear for Maripaz - and all the other young women in town - because that scum Rutilio has too much time on his hands.

Rogelio is so tuned into Cupcake that no matter how she tries to conceal it I'm sure he'll get that this Gus is "The Gus." I hope Rogelio doesn't do the let's-prove-our-love-to-the-public-by-kissing in-front-of-them thing. I hate that. But I guess it's natural for him to want to mark his territory. Rogelio, try holding hands instead.

Hi, I want to comment more later but just had to quickly tell Jardinera what a great title AND
What a great set- up episode! I enjoyed it muchisimo!

Niecie, you're dead right. In doing what she did Vainessa made a fool of herself. Her mother's advice would have worked for her here.

I get the impression that Elsa herself never took advice from anyone and Vainessa is certainly her mother's daughter. She gets more like her every day.

Does anyone else think that David will eventually look to cheat Vainessa out of her money?

If Tia MentiRosa is at the dinner table she better keep her mouth shut.

Finally, does anyone else think that Rutilio will possibly be a serial rapist? In one of my episodes he was eyeing Daniela like a lion looks at red meat. All the females of that age group need self-defense courses.

Yes, Urban, I mentioned yesterday that Rutillio is the Big Bad Wolf and Maripaz was Red Riding Hood.
Actually, Maripaz looked more like Bambi caught in the headlights. He's a predator.

Love the title, Jardinera. Can't wait for the recap. It will do you justice and us a favor.

My 2 cents--Rogelio suspects that it's too coincidental for there to be two Gustavos. But it's too late now. He's here and Cinthia is here. After his conversation with Guscake, he's putting this and that together, but neither has mentioned either the Ex-Novia's name, nor the Current-Esposa's name outloud, so there's no ah-ha moment yet.

He extended an invitation to the party to them. How could he not. He's the host.

He's mindful that when AP was "returned," she said that from now on she was going to follow the letter of the contract in her duties--one of which is to be pleasant and loving in public.

He thought bubbled to himself that he's going up the number of occasions that can be considered "in public." Lunch at Ulises' Cafe (darn if I don't think of Julian Gil as I type this, and didn't go well for AP), Dinner for Don A was another (which went badly for both of them), and now the dinner party-reception as new Pres of the Livestock "club" (which will cause quite an explosion).

It won't take but half a second for Rog to realize the two Guses are one incarnation. Fun and games, no?

Loved the dress Ana Paula wore. She really looked stunning. For a girl from a humble background who managed to get through nursing school by working hard, she exudes elegance.
Anita

Vainy said she spilled the hermana beans in front of Abel and expects he will tell his wife who will spread the chisme. I assume Vainy just wants to further humiliate Cupcake IMHO.

Rutilio definitely is a predator. Efrain came to Maripaz' rescue and Sir Gustavo rescued Lady Chatterley once so I'm pondering the possibility that Lord Rogelio will have to rescue Lady Ana Paula eventually. Meaning after he gets out of the wheelchair for good.

One has to have truly outdated attitudes to be ashamed of being "illegitimate" when it's something that's not a result of one's own actions. Vainessa is the one who's living under a rock.

When Cinthia had her
"meeting" with Rogelio about Gus, etc., she said something like for the first time she felt loved, cared for, respected. She had tears in her eyes and it was a sincere moment. I thought Rogelio looked sad, as though he realized that she doesn't see him in that way. He is really softening and becoming a bit more emotionally tuned in, I think.

Can someone please, please tell me what site to use to get the complete episodes. Thanks

This is my source for downloadable episodes: It's a Russian forum, but "safe" as far as I can tell.

BTW, obviously the megaupload links are dead on the Russian forum. I use the .ru links and they are pretty intuitive and downloading has always been easy for me.

Super title, Jardinera. Looking forward to your recap.

When Tia Rosaura was hanging AP's dresses in the armoire, all I could think was "no wire hangers!!" And speaking of dresses, the one she had on for the dinner party was lovely.

Rohell may be a meanie, but he knows his way around the kitchen. A man of many talents!

Tia and Maria joining forces to oust Vainey were too funny. And leaving Hugo helplessly holding a platter while they did it! Then, turning on each other when Tia demanded service. Best comic relief ever.

Looking forward to some sizzling tension around the dinner table in the next episode.
La Paloma

Looking forward to the recap Jardinera. I too an tired of how the show is currently going myself. Jorge/Rog is the only reason I'm still watching this. The scene at the end was funny when Rog introduced AP to Gus. Wonder when will he realize that Gus is the infamous boyfriend.

njsue--Am totally in accord with your take on the Cin-Rogelio conversation. Glad you brought it up. Those were genuine tears.

Now, if she would only get out of those frilly halter tops, I think I could like her a bit more. I remember wearing one of those when I was 7.
Anita

Oh yes, Rog was all verklempt in that scene. I think it was his feeling for her, and also maybe feeling for himself? He feels that lack in both his and his sister's lives.

"Gus who's coming to dinner"–Brilliant!

OK - so maybe I should point out that AP was making Chiles Rellenos en Nogada. These are filled poblano chiles that are usually baked, then seved with a nogada sauce - a walnut sauce made with ground nuts and other things. It was the nogada sauce that Rogelio complained was too watery and then he "fixed" LOL!

We used frequent a restaurant in Austin (Manuel's) that serves that dish, and it is one of my faves. Traditionally in Mexico the nogada sauce is also served with turkey around Christmas.

Lovely seeing some real Mexican haute cuisine going on in that beautiful kitchen!

Vainessa said she hoped Abel would tell his wife that AP was a "bastarda" because Vainessa thought Abel's wife (and I suppose others) would snub AP if they knew. Abel indicated he was going to be a gentleman and "forget" the entire scene. But Vainessa did succeed in disrupting Rogelio's meeting with Abel, which I suppose was her primary objective.

Audrey

I am so tired of AP and her sanctimonious attitude and now I can add hypocrite after she hauled off and slapped Rog. She may as well have had a whip in her hand.

Vaca isn't thinking straight. The only thing she accomplishing is tarnishing her father's memory. Shame on her.

Tia and Maria were funny for about 5 seconds, then things were back to norman.

So, Rog can cook, who would have thought. He must have spent a lot of time with Maria while growing up.

Rosemary Primera

Thanks, Jardinera. Fantastic title with great stuff to come, no doubt.

Cupcake looked lovely. We've never seen her in the same outfit twice, I don't think. She looks prettiest in simple things, IMHO, like jeans and a shirt.

I have to give it to the actress who plays Vanessa. She's hit her stride and is about as nasty as they come. I love David trying to settle her down: he's in it for the dough, she wants revenge, and Bruno wants his land (and maybe AP, too).

AP is sooo naive about Tia. She falls for every phony line that Tia puts together. Tia is terrible, can't stand her behavior with Maria, but love the way she speaks to Vanessa.

Can't help rooting for Sinthia, but don't see good times ahead for her. She's beyond needy. Rogelio's leadership in hacienda matters has certainly had a bad impact on her. Clearly he loves her, but her contention that it's more about control than love is hard to dispute, given the problem he has distinguishing between the two.

Thanks for the information on the site Elvira. That saved me from a hair-pulling day.

from DC.

UA I just read that Dark Shadows will be released this summer in a 131 DVD set as part of the hype for the Tim Birton film.

Can't wait for the recap. I've had to go out of town this week unexpectedly and have read the recaps every day since I couldn't watch them. Sounds like it's getting exciting, finally.

I, too, love the title.

p.s. Thank you to all the recappers for doing the job of recapping. I would have been lost without you this week.

Sara, I already have all the boxed sets that were released starting about 10 years ago. I bought them at the 2006 convention at a significant discount.

Unusual packaging of DVDs or CDs annoys me because you can't comfortably put it on the shelf with all the others.

I so wish Televisa would buy the rights to that story.

I'm recovering from a St Patrick's Day party. After an early lunch I'm going to work on the next episode.

"¿Estás haciendo chiles en nogada o chiles enojada?"
(are you making chiles en nogada or angry chiles?)

That was a funny line from María talking to AP. I should have included it in my bit about the dish above, but I forgot the joke. I'm reading the captions now.

I also got a big kick out of it later when Tía was running around flapping her hands because her fingers were burning from having worked with the chiles LOL.

Another tidbit on the dish - it's usually served with a red garnish on top, like pomegranate seeds. The green chile, white nogada sauce and red seeds are the colors of the Mexican flag, so this dish is often served on Sept. 16, Mexican Independence Day.

A random thought on the title of this TN...

I have always taken 'La No Podia Amar' to refer to Ana Paula, as the central character in the telenovela. In thinking about it, I realized that the best candidate for "La" in that sentence is Tia Rosaura. She has never had a successful romantic relationship (that we know about) and she is continuing to sell-out her own family in AP and Miguel.

Even horrid Vanesa loved her father, Elsa loves Vanesa and Cinthia seems to care for Maria and (maybe) Rogelio.

For some reason I find this thought really intriguing. I know, I need to get a life!

EJ

Thank you so much Jardinera for this most excellent recap and the title loved it. Loved your name for the three evil plotters Los Malditos Banditos.

My favortie part was the Tia's burning hands from the chilies and Maria and Rosie joining forces however brief to escort Vainy from the premises. Loved your name for Vainy too, the other part of Sister Sledge lol.

You would think the Tia would use the money she got from La Vaca to try and save her sister. I wonder how many jewels she bought instead?

Vainy is becoming La Vaca in her search for venganza. She is going off the deep end and humiliating herself in public. I'm surprised Rohell didn't do the motion with the circle going around the ear when he tried to explain to Don Abel. She is truly loca, and I hope it bites her in the butt.

I really hope Bruno is not Mikey's lawyer at trial. Mikey will end up doing life.

Oopsie, typo in last post. "La QUE no podia amar" is what I should have typed.

EJ

Wasn't that sarcasm on AP's part when Rogelio "fixed" the nogada? The big, strong man touched it and now it's all better? At least there was nothing being squished out of a box for this.

Jorge Salinas really does subtle expressions well. It seemed when he was talking to Cinthia about Gus and she said she's never felt this loved or respected from a man, he suddenly realized that he's a man too lumped in with all those other jerks (where he belongs really).

And thank you wardrobe for putting AP in a dress of appropriate length for a dinner party. She looked great and not like a teenager. Now about Cinthia's half-shirt...

Kelly

Thanks for a great recap, jardinera.

When Chip- told Esteban that she felt marriage came before kids, he didn't disagree. But when they hugged, he made a face behind her back indicating that he was not so pleased with the idea of marriage. I hope this isn't going to become a long, boring thread in the story.

Another possibility for another boring thread is Ephraim and either Maripaz,or even Macaria --whose boobs he seems not to get enough viewing of. I am wondering whey they are spending so much time on this group and Ephraim if they are not going to use this as another story thread. So far, thesewriters havenot thrown in any gratuitious episodes like you find in so many other telenovelas.

I am really looking forward to Monday and how the two impactada Cakes deal with the situation.

Thank you for your great recap, Jardinera. Loved your cross out, to put "boondock".
Can't wait to see how this is all going to play out. I am sure they are going to have a water rights struggle soon.
Vainessa is showing the type of vindictiveness characteristic of TNs-get revenge even if it hurts you. Abel can't be thinking she's anything but a nutcase.

The conversation about children between Esteban and Chio, did he say he wanted a lot of children and she disagreed? I was surprised by that, and thought I might have gotten it wrong.

I was recording all the new Abismo de Pasion this week since I was out of town and I forgot that I recorded this episode also. So I watched it this morning. In the avances, it shows Gus and Cin kissing at the party.
I agree with everyone about AP's dress. Beautiful and beautiful color. She should wear her hair off her face more often.

Great recap Jardinera, thanks.

Vaca is becoming BSC just like her mother.

I agree that Tia is the one that cannot love. Of course, if it is money they are talking about, she not only loves it but deserves it, just ask her.

I didn't realize that AP's mother died because of lack of medical care. Shame on Tia! Thanks for claifying that information.

Rosemary Primera

I hate it when things get back to norman.

Great recap Jardinera! I love the name Chio-pet. And it's a little thing but I love the end and the talk about "the fricken' CO2." that just had me laughing hysterically.

I guess the writers think it adds realism but a lot of Fridays conversations just had me lost. I never would have caught on if it hadn't been for my printouts from Gato Viejo's amazing CC capture machine.

EJ--The title does leave it open to interpretation. But we know AP has been in love, and was beginning to love Rogelio--but she herself said to somebody (Dany, Tia, Migel, Rogelio--can't remember who) that, after her first love, she would never open herself to love again.

If they wanted to refer only to AP in the title, it should have been, La Que No Podia VOLVER a Amar, no?

I like your open ended Amars, better.
Anita

LQNPA fits Vanessa better. Yes, she loved her daddy, but as for being in love with a man, I don't think she ever was in love with Rogelio (not that we were privy to, anyway). Her relationship to him had a more to do with guaponess, social status and wealth. Then, even though he sitll had all three of those attributes after his accident, she chose to disassociate herself from a less-than-whole man.
Anita

Jardinera what a great recap and fantastic title! PERFECT! Our talented recappers never fails to amaze me, thank you all !
I FINALLY have caught up with 12 episodes of Podia, I was in Mexico and they were in the final weeks, I was tempted to watch it but didn't want to cheat.

I agree that Esteban made a worried face when Chio mentioned she wants to get married before kids, I don't care much for her but would like to visit her store, I am always shopping even while watching TV.

The only thing I have found exciting in this TN since I have been gone is that Cupcake and Guscake finally got together, wonder if she's pregnant. Other than that I am still amazed at the fans of Rohell, he is STILL the controlling, angry, vindictive violent man he was 6 months ago! Watching everyone walk on egg shells around him is painful. Maria should mix a "happy pill" in his morning coffee...daily.

When Gus & Sin drove up to the Hacienda the big gate had to be opened by two guards, so how the heck does Vainessa just burst into the house all the time?!!

Vainessa has me confused, she is a loving daughter and friend so she is not all evil like Bruno. But does she really want Rohell back? Personally I think they make a great couple with all their shenanigans trying to get even with one another, he wanted AP because she reminded him of Vainessa, and she left handsome Esteban because she couldn't forget Rohell....a match made in heaven/hell ?

Does anyone have a good recipe for Rohell's favorite chili rellenos in nogada?...Audrey?

PS. In Mexico I dragged my hubbie to Sabor Amor, Silvia Navarro's restaurant, sadly for me she wasn't there, DARN! I love her!

njsue--Maybe somebody in the studio owes Paty Diaz and German Gutierrez something from before, so they gave them a daughter, prize money and a trip to Mexico City (besides being a good place for Rogelio to show off his wife in public and for Bruno to get poor Mikey drunk). They're nice people, but they are distracting to the heart of the story.
Anita

"When Gus & Sin drove up to the Hacienda the big gate had to be opened by two guards, so how the heck does Vainessa just burst into the house all the time?!!"
-----
Ha ha ha!! I had never thought of that. I guess everyone just lets her in. I'm sure the other option is to incur her wrath and that *can't* be fun!

Yes, that was totally sarcasm from AP when Rogelio "fixed" the nogada, and with that and the comment about "big man in the kitchen" she finally got him to leave the kitchen.

Yes, I thought Rogelio tearing up was because Cinthia said Gus made her feel loved and appreciated - something she had never felt before. Obvious she meant she'd never felt it from him or their parents and he really got the message.

I loved the part where Margarito was going around in a panic because he'd seen Gus - and kissing Cinthia no less!! LOL!

Thanks Jardinera - such a fun recap!

Audrey

Here is a recipe from Rick Bayless. It looks like the traditional one. It also looks super involved!!!

I think my favorite part is the spiced picadillo filling for the poblano chiles - finely chopped pork with fruit and nuts and spices. It's very Mediterranean/Middle-Eastern in style. The spicy chile with the somewhat sweet meat filling, then cooled off by the creamy nogada - yum!

Pork and Fruit Stuffed Chiles in White Walnut Sauce

Some regions batter and deep fry the chiles, but I think traditionally it's baked which I much prefer.

Audrey

Esteban may have rolled his eyes behind Chio-Pet's back, but I thought it was because he had a momentary doubt and then said screw it. She's game and he's following the new macho motto IMHO. Sorry, but there's only so much detail one can add and still get the important conversations typed up and posted.

Sorry I totally missed the sarcasm of the second half of the scene as I was racing through it all. I've changed it accordingly. I missed the translation of sabe for taste instead of know in this case. Can't win 'em all.

Hey, no problem! As you say, you can't add every detail. Besides, the snark is way more important!

I LOVED the cat fight alert - LOL!

Audrey

Jardinera, thanks for a fun recap. My favorites:

“Don A considers it a great honor to have been invited to Hell-Fuerte. (It won’t be long before he changes his mind, I’m sure.)”

“OMG! CATFI-I-I-I-I-IGHT!!!! CATFIGHT ALERT!!! HOT-DIGITTY DAMN!”

Can't wait to see how all three square off at the party.

I felt this episode was great at pumping up the excitement for what was to occur. "Viewerville is on the edge of every available seat in living rooms throughout in anticipation of the singular event." Count me in!

IMHO, no way, no how does Rohell think or suspect the Gustavitos are one and the same. His anger and horror when he discovers the truth is a good part of what has this citizen of Viewerville at the edge of her seat.

Jardinera, "Rog is discussing some mumbo-jumbo claptrap about greenhouse gases and turbines with Don Abel who is doing a great job at avoiding crossed eyes" AND "the fricken' CO2" LOL! But dare I admit it? Though I don't want a telenovela tour of whatever they are talking about, I do actually want to know what this great idea is. Did you notice it was never actually explained?

Chio-Pet. Very funny. I found Chio-Pet's jealousy rather ugly. But the face Esteban made when he realized that he might actually have to marry (as in "I'm stuck with her for the rest of my life") his brood mare wasn't too pretty either. However, I'm with you njsue, I hope this won't become a long BORING thread.

Jardinera, I thought the same thing about Gus and Esteban's new motto! If you can't be with the one you love, love the one you're with!

I actually felt sorry for Mikey as the Evil Trio bandied about his life and freedom.

"Mi familia es tu familia" This was really nice of you Ulises--but unfortunately, su familia todavia esta ABURRIDA.

Rosie gave AP some good advice: "Look. You’ve got two choices: either be a sad sack or relax a little and enjoy the dinner. It’s up to you.” I think dinner will be a little harder to enjoy than ever expected!

Sorry about the double post.

Jardinera: Stupendous and riveting. "Ro-Hell’s obliging lip-lock on the public square in San Gabriel with Paula’s own flesh and blood sister is practically akin to incest for gawd sakes!" and the entire first paragraph had me smiling in appreciation. You are the master. I thank you for the time you spend to craft these marvelous, clever recaps.

ITA with everyone who said Ana looked lovely. She did indeed.

I knew Efrain felt the full effect of Ro-Hell's rant but I didn't realize he'd been fired. Asleep at the wheel I guess. I'm sure his hanging out with Ulises and family will be important down the road.

I think I underappreciated the actress playing Vainessa. She does appear to have hit her stride and does nasty and vitrolic extremely well.

Esteban may try and talk himself into thinking Chio is it, but there's no way. She's simply rebound girl.

Thanks Jardinera for always giving me something to look forward to on Monday.

Diana

AP's dress is definitely better than most of her previous wardrobe, but she needs to work on her hair. She needs either a little fullness (because of how her ears stick out) or an upsweep.

I just finished tonight's entry, which will be posted immediately after the episode.

Jardinere:

I just wanted to chime in with thanks for a wonderful recap.

I am glad you covered the Chio-Esteban business. I do not like this coupling. She is stalkerish and possessive and, odd. Her jealousy was very presumptious, I thought. Eeewww—Chio you just started the man, ease up, already.

I find Chio repulsive for some reason, as you can tell.

I thought I'd re-write my last post! LOL.

I wanted to congratulate Jardinera for her wonderful, witty recap. Full of clever snark, I don't know how you do it! I loved the part where she was ripping into Rohell for the kiss with Vain, saying it's almost like incest, for crying out loud! Very funny and truly it was the way she was acting! LOL.

EJ, I agree EJ, the Chio-Stephen storyline leaves me cold. What a snooze. Chio is an attractive woman, but at the same time, she just is weird in some way. She doesn't seem to have much to do other than run her business and chase after Esteban.

The finale for this novela was on last night in Mexico, and for a while, several of the characters' names were trending on Twitter (for Mexico). It was a hot topic of discussion! LOL

UA, I wanted to tell you a teensy tiny thing, so if you could shoot me an email at esvidsespanol AT gmail.com, that would be great. Don't worry, it's nothing serious.

Sorry to be late, Jardinera. Super-entertaining as always. My favorite line:

"Rog screams at Nessa for insulting his wife while Nessa mentally files her nails..."

I can't believe that Raimundo hasn't approached Rog about buying La Negra... with control of water at stake, he'd be sure of paying top dollar... none of this knocking 10% off nonsense.

Carlos

Carlos: You oughtta be in bidnez. ; > )) However, if they happen to make 6 gallon or 10 gallon Stetson beanies in Texas, I 'd invest in one if I were you. Obviously your mental computation regarding Raimundo's poor judgment in the sale of his property to la vibora esa suggests you haven't to date. Tsk. Tsk. On the other hand, maybe she flashed him something other than her pearly whites to get that discount. Jus' sayin'.
==========

Ladies 'n gents, thanks again for your kind words and enthusiastic responses.
