Abismo de pasión #30 4/20/12: Cocktails Always Lead to Tears

Casa de Modas

When the story opens, Blanca expresses to Lucio her concerns about him returning to the procesadora.  She says that he will have problems with Gabino, however, it doesn’t matter what she thinks because she will support whatever decision he makes.  Lucio is both surprised and thrilled about her attitude.  They share a tender moment and express how much they still love each other.    After a few kisses and caresses, Lucio asks her about the serious thing she wants to discuss.  She tells him that Agusto and Alphonsia will visit their home at noon.  Everyone will know then.  What’s wrong with you to want to meet with the two of them at the same time?  Unknowingly, she saves his life, by rushing him out the door to meet with their guests.  He quickly forgets his concerns and turns to leave.   He goes back to her one last time to tell her how much he loves her and thanks her for supporting him.

Don Lucio and Blanca’s Home

Augusto ties up his horse and notices Alphonsia sitting in a black SUV.  Shocked, he walks over and asks her what she’s doing there.  She doesn’t answer, but gives him the “F you and the horse you road in on” look.

Back at Casa de Modas

A distraught Horacio, with tears in his eyes, has arrived with his death kit. Menacing music is playing in the background as the killer agonizes over Gabino’s evil assignment.  Momentarily, he pauses and puts his head against the wall.   Intense orchestra music combined with angry drums and flute rage in the background.  Just as he gathers the courage to forge on towards the entrance, a woman and child stroll by him, he masks his identity by hiding his face against the wall.  The violins, symbols and drums soar to deafening decibels!  The music dulls Horacio’s hearing because he fails to hear when Don Lucio opened and closed the massive wooden shop doors.  Horacio does not lift his head from the wall while Lucio stops, adjusts his clothing, puts on his ten-gallon hat, and dances a little jig in front of the doors.  Only when Don Lucio is safely out of the scene, does Horacio spring back into action.   He checks the area to ensure that there are no witnesses (the streets are somewhat bare), pulls a Molotov cocktail out of his death kit and lights the dirty rag with an extremely loud lighter.  Although the cymbals are still crashing and the flutes are still blaring, we are now able to hear the sound of the heavy doors opening and slamming shut.  We even hear the click of the padlock that he places on the door so that trapped inhabitants cannot escape.  His face set, he marches off.  The mercenary has completed his mission.

Although the wick wasn’t that long, Horacio is able to completely leave the scene undetected.  Elisa, after having mended her relationship with Paloma is returning to the shop.  Just before crossing the street to enter Casa de Modas, I noticed that on her side of the street there are at least 25,000 townspeople nonchalantly walking around waiting to react to the explosion.  Not one of these people noticed a man with a Molotov cocktail?  When Elisa and the shop are in the same scene, we hear a terrified Blanca scream Lucio’s name!  KA BOOM!!!!!!!!  The Casa de Modas explodes!  Elisa screams and tries to rush into the inferno to save her godmother, but is restrained by a passerby.  All 25,000 extras (I mean townspeople) are now standing behind Elisa trying to look horrified.  Elisa wails and struggles against her captor.  She begs someone…anyone to help.  Damien (who just happened to be in the area) arrives and dashes out of his truck. Along with Elisa, he rushes towards the burning building, but retreats because of a second explosion (I only saw one Molotov cocktail go in).  Elisa continues to holler and try to get in the building.  Damien now takes over the task of restraining Elisa.  He tells her that there’s nothing that they can do.

Don Lucio Residence

Agosto and Alphonsia are wondering why they were both invited there by Nina. Alphonsia thinks Blanca tardiness shows a lack of respect.  Right then, Lucio show up to greet his guests and invites them in.  As the three move to enter the home, Nemo shows up to confronts her husband about breaking his promise not to visit Blanca.  Lucio says that they are all curious to know why Blanca has called this meeting.  Nemo says that she will be there for the meeting even though Blanca does not want her there.  Lucio invites the all into the house to wait.

Procesadora de Habaneros de Arango.

Standing on the corner once in a revealing dress (once), I assume you’re waiting on a cab.   Standing on the corner twice?  You’re a hooker (but that’s only my prudish opinion).  Anyways Ingrid is standing outside of the processor in a spring dress with a plunging neck-line, when she is confronted by Gambino.  He too is curious as to why she is standing around the procesadora in red F-me hard pumps.  Looking for tricks…I mean Johns…I mean work, she says.  He tells her stop by tomorrow so they can chat, but she wants to talk now.  He asks her bare, freckled boobs to join him for lunch.  She agrees and they stroll off arm and arm together.

Don Lucio Residence

Alphonsia say that she has waited long enough and wants to leave.  Lucio asks her to wait a little longer, but she leaves anyway (she can’t wait forever!)  Nemo, the party crasher, wants to leave as well.  Agosto wants to wait another five minutes.  Nemo observes that if Blanca had something really important to say, she would’ve arrived by now.  Lucio doesn’t understand why is wife has not arrived yet, but does not call the shop.  He tells them to leave and meet with her later.  Something must be really wrong, but he stills doesn’t call.  Nemo and her husband leave.

Casa de POTA (Planet of the Apes)

Ramona tells Paloma about the explosion and that Blanca is dead.  Paloma wants to know about Elisa.  Ramona tells her that Elisa is fine.  Paloma cries.  Paloma says that if Blanca had not sent Elisa out with her, Elisa would be dead too.  Ramona says that Elisa was a guardian angel to the end and suggests that Paloma go be with her friend.

Somewhere Near the Casa de Modas

For some reason, Damien and Elisa are walking down the street.  This is strange because he clearly arrived in a truck (a white one to be exact).  Elisa says that she will have to ask the Don to forgive her.  She did nothing to save his wife.  Damien tells her that it’s not her fault.  There was nothing that she could do.  She feels guilty that Blanca left her alone.  He tells her to be strong for Don Lucio.  He needs her right now.  She doesn’t know if she can be strong for Lucio because she’s dying.  He lays his forehead on hers as she continues to sob.

Don Lucio Residence

Elisa and Damien tell Lucio that his wife died in an explosion at the Casa de Modas.  Don Lucio runs to the shop, where a two paramedics and some guy in a white shirt are removing a body.  We get a quick view of the broken lock.  He demands to know if Blanca is in the body bag.  The guy confirms her identity and Lucio sobs over the body.  Such a sad scene, but while he sobbing, I took the opportunity to make several observations.

·         No cops, no detectives, no firemen, no bomb sniffing dogs, no security guard or a boy scout showed up to investigate an EXPLOSION!!!!

·         The streets are not wet!  How did the fire go out if the fire department was not called?

Elisa and Damien show up and convince him to let the paramedics take the body away.

Restaurante

Gabino and Ingrid are discussing opportunities at the procesadora.  She notices that he is pre-occupied because he has stopped talking to her boobies. I think he tells her that she should keep checking the advertisements and he will keep her in mind.  She leaves the restaurant.  Two women enter and sit at the table next to Gabino.  They loudly discuss the explosion.  Gabino asks if Lucio is dead and is extremely irritated to learn that his nemesis is still alive.

Arango House

Florencia and Alfonsia are eating lunch, when Florencia observes that Damien is very late.  He hasn’t even called (duh!).  Damien walks in and tells them that Blanca died in an explosion.  Alfonsina is shocked.  Antonia comes in and reminds Alfonsina that Blanca wanted to talk to her last night.  Damien wants to know why.  Alfonsina believes that Blanca only wanted to talk about her husband’s work problems.  Damien says that they are going to pay for the funeral.  Alfonsina says no, that’s not their responsibility.  Lucio is out of his mind, he doesn’t have the head for anything.  He can’t do it.  He tells Antonia to tell Braulio that he has to help with the arrangements.  He runs off to change his clothes and call Lupe to prepare the church.  Florencia asks him if he’s leaving.  He says yes and hurries off.  Florencia asks Alfonsina why Damien is so affected by the death of this woman.  Alfonsina explains that he’s known her since he was a child and that she was the godmother of Elisa.  Florencia ain’t no fool.  If Elisa gonna be there, she wants to be there too. She rushes off to change for the funeral as well.

Arango House-Kitchen

While chewing what appears to be a cud or some very delicious gum, Horacio asks Antonia, “Why the sad face?”  She tells him that a person very loved in the village has died.  Braulio comes in wants to know why this scumbag is hanging out with his wife.  Horacio tells him that he has been hired to take care of Damien’s horse.  After Horacio leaves, Braulio asks Antonio why she didn’t tell him that a dirt bag was working there.  She knows his type.  She tells him that she can’t argue right now and tells him that Blanca died in an explosion.

Church

Hmmmmm Father Lupe may have joined Nemo at the tanning parlor.  He’s looking a little Bengalish himself today.  Oh my gosh!  Finally, a phone!  After you are done discussing the explosion with Damien, can one of you please call the police or the fire marshall and let them know that there was well…an EXPLOSION and someone died?  It might…well, you know…need to be investigated.  No such luck on the priest’s end.  Gael comes in screaming about work and distracts him.  Hopefully, Damien will make the call.  Gael sees the father’s face and asks what’s up.  For the 40th time, we learn that Blanca died in an explosion.  Gael wants to know if Elisa was there.  He is assured that she is fine, but that’s all Damien said.  They have to prepare the church for the wake.

Arango Horse (singular) stable

Horacio tells Gabino that he completed his assignment.  Gabino grabs Horacio and throws him to the ground.  He calls him and imbecile and tells him that he killed Lucio’s wife and Lucio is still alive.  Horacio explains that he followed Lucio from his house to the shop and tossed a bottle of gasoline.   Seriously, the music was loud!  He wants the money that Gabino promised him.  Gabino says, that was a free one and warns him that he better not open his mouth.

Don Lucio Residence

Lucio sits staring into space.  Elisa wants him to stand up so she can help him put on his chamarra?  He tells her that Blanca wasn’t crazy about his decision to return to the procesadora, but she supported him.  He tells her that Blanca wanted to talk to him about something very important when she got home last night, but he was angry and ignored her.  He was being mean to her that morning as well.  When he finally tried asking her about the important conversation, she rushed him out to meet their guests.  He should have been at the shop so that he could die with her.  Elisa tells him that is wasn’t his fault.  He sobs and says that he doesn’t want to live without Blanca.  Elisa says that now that Blanca’s dead, they will need to support each other more than ever.  There’s a knock at the door.  Gael has come to tell them that Blanca’s body is ready at the church (but not at the morgue, where a coroner should be performing an autopsy for the investigation).  I guess Damien didn’t call after all.  Blanca makes Gael promise to stay with Lucio while she runs home to get dressed.  She tells Lucio that Gael will take him to the church.

Arango House

Damien has changed into a black shirt and looks rather dashing.  He’s shocked to see Florencia waiting in a couture bare-shouldered mini dress from the house of Valentino.  Elisa will not look better than her at the somber occasion.  I admire that!  I really do.  He tells her that her presence at the funeral is not wanted.  Alfonsina butts in and tell him that it’s necessary that Florence attend if she going to stay in La Ermita.  She needs to begin networking and building relationships.  Damien tells his mom he is attending a funeral and not the country club and this is not the occasion for Florencia to begin making friends.  Florencia is getting the feeling that he doesn’t want her to go to the funeral shindig.  He agrees to let her go, but he ain’t thrilled about it.  Florencia tells Alfonsina to tell Paolo that they went out dancing at the funeral party.  Don’t wait up for her.

Agosto and Nemo’s Casa

Paolo, stops by the house wanting to know if it was Elisa who died in the explosion.  Upon hearing Lolita in the foyer, Agosta and Nemo come to investigate the commotion.  Paolo repeats that there was an explosion and a woman’s body was found in the debris.  Agosto asks about his daughter, Paolo doesn’t know where she is, that’s why he’s there.  For a brief moment, even Nemo looks concerned.  Agosto starts to freak about his kid.  He needs to know what happened.  Just then, the door opens and Elisa walks in.  Lolita jumps all over her with kisses and hugs.  Agosto looks relieved and demands to know what happened.  Elisa tells them that Blanca has died.  How many more times will I have to repeat this sentence?  She runs to her room.  While the others chase her, Nemo slinks over to Paolo and tells him that he should take advantage of the situation.

Agosto follows Elisa into her room and asks what happened.  She sobs and tells him that she doesn’t know what happened.  She left and when she got back the store exploded and she wasn’t able to save her.  Her father puts his hand on her shoulder and tried to comfort her in his own stoic way.  He doesn’t do it the way Damien did it, so she asks him to leave her alone.  He asks where the wake will be.  She says at the church and then he leaves.  She sobs in her pillow.

Church-Wake Party

The church bells ring and the music is deafening once again.  Damien and Florencia step on to the runway (I mean walk down the aisle), both looking stunning in their matching Calvin Klein attire.  Braulio tells Damien that all the arrangements have been made and tells him that the police suspect arson.  OK…maybe Damien did call the police.  But, I still say that the fire department did not put out that fire!  The streets were not wet!  I did my own investigation and reviewed the scene several times while Lucio was sobbing over body.  I had nothing better to do.   Luckily they turned the music down so that Lucio and we viewers can hear the conversation and his head snaps around to hear more.  Lucio stands up and walks over to mourn over the casket.  While at the casket, Gabino struts down the runway (aisle) wearing an ensemble from Sean Jean’s summer collection.  He stops to do a three point turn before walking over to Lucio to express his condolences.  As soon as he hears Gabino’s voice, Don Lucio becomes unglued and goes after him.  Damien, Lupe and Gael rush to restrain him.  Lupe tells Lucio that he can’t rumble in a church!  We all know he did it, we all know you want to whoop his a$$, but you can’t do it in the house of the Lord!  That was the exact conversation.  Would I lie on a priest?  Lucio can’t calm down and calls down ever curse imaginable on Gabino.  Finally, Lupe orders the bouncers to toss Lucio out of the funeral party.  While being ejected, Lucio says that he wants Gabino tossed too.  He doesn’t want him near his wife.  Lupe tells Gabino that he can’t stay at the funeral ho down either.  Gabino protests and says that he just wants to pay his lasts respects.  The priest exorcises the demon and tells him to respect Lucio’s pain and he too gets tossed out of the hottest club in town.

Ramona and Paloma meet Gabino leaving the soiree.  Ramona tells him that she’s surprised to see him coming out of a church.  Paloma calls him a hypocrite, everyone knows he hates Lucio.  He touches Paloma’s face in a suggestive manner, and Ramona grabs him and tells him to keep filthy his hands off of her grand-daughter.  As the two women enter the church, we see Horacio watching Gabino in the background.

Church-Padre’s House

The bouncers (Damien and Gael) have taken Lucio to the Lupe’s house.  He is still fired up!  There is no way that that fire was an accident.  He knows it was Gabino.  He heard what Braulio told Damien when the music was lowered.  Damien points out the police merely suspect arson, they don’t know who did it.  Gael, who is dumb as two rocks points out that Gabino had a problem with Lucio, not Blanca.  Damien defends Gabino by reporting that he couldn’t have down it.  He was at the procesadora during the explosion.  Lucio doesn’t want to talk about it anymore.  Lupe (maybe it was spray tan) walks in and tells the bouncers to return to Club Iglesia while he speaks to Lucio.  The party has stopped hopping now that Lucio and Gabino caused such a scene.  Lucio wants to know if the priest gave Gabino the heave ho.  Lupe assures him that he did.  In a soothing voice, he tells him that Gabino is far far far far far far far far….FAR from being the best Christian, but he did not murder his Blanca.  Lucio asks him if he’s sure it was an accident.  Lucio knows that Gabino did it and he will spend the rest of his life trying to prove it.  He swears on the life of Blanca that whoever took her life will pay with his/her own.

Agosto Nemo Elisa Casa

Lolita finds Elisa, fully dressed and crying, sitting at the bottom of a running shower.  Lolita tells Elisa that she knows how she feels.  Elisa says that know one can understand.  First she lost her mother and now she’s lost her godmother.  She’s sobbing because Blanca was like her mother and she couldn’t save her.  She can’t do it anymore.  She continues to sob uncontrollably.  They should go get Damien.  Only he can handle this.  Lolita tells her to stand up so they can go to the wake.  Her father is just about to leave.  She doesn’t want to leave that spot.  She sinks back down to the floor as soon as Lolita exits the room.  I don’t know how she is gonna get out of the shower.  I’d be bummed too.

Agosto tells Nemo that he is going to the funeral.   He thinks that she should go with him.  She tells him that he knows that she doesn’t go to church.  She’d be a hypocrite because she never got along with Blanca anyway.  Besides what has she ever done for me?  Well, when our child died, she took you to the hospital??????  Well that was years ago.  Besides she was talking about me behind my back?????  I think he tells her that she should at least show up for the burial.  Show some respect.  She was more of a mother to your niece than you.   Can someone please translate this conversation?  I didn’t get it.  Fine she agrees to go to the funeral, but asks him to wait while she gets dressed (finally!  We are all grateful because she has not worn clothes for the entire day).  Agosto takes his hat and leaves.

Arango House

Either she’s having a flashback or Alphonsia is imaging Blanca telling her that she was wrong about Estefania all these years.   Sitting at her vanity, Alphonsia shakes it off and says that she couldn’t have hated the wrong woman for all those years.  That woman stole and killed her husband.  Antonia enters and tells her that the chauffer is there to take her to the church.  She tells Antonio to tell the chauffer that she has to rest.  She’s not going to the funeral.  She doesn’t want to attend the funeral of a great friend of Estefania.

Dr. Whipped’s Residence

Enrique and his sister discuss the death and explosion.  Enrique asks his sister to call the Arango house and ask for Florencia.  His sister tells him that she is insane, but she agrees to do it.  Right before she calls,  Dr. Whipped walks in and she is able to make her escape.  He asks his son to sit down.  His father asks how he likes his job.  He tells him that his mother got him the job by asking Alfonsina to hook him up.  He wants to know why his father is so against his mother.  He had a battle getting jobs in Guadalajara.  (I don’t know the rest of what Whipped says) Whipped tells his son that he wants to get along with him and be is friend.

Agosto Nemo Elisa Residence

Paolo is waiting at the bottom of the stairs as Elisa exits the house.  He wants to make is move at her most vulnerable moment.   He wants to accompany her to the big funeral party.  He heard the party is really jumping there!  She finally agrees.  Nemo pulls out her dead sister’s jewelry and tries it on.  We flashes back to Blanca calling her everything except a child of God.  Nemo is happy that whatever Blanca discovered went with her to the grave.

Thank you. This one was such a tear jerker. I admit I ff through most of it. I couldn't watch everyone being so sad.

My tears flowed for you too. Such heartbreak you had to deal with.

Cynderella - we wait with bated breath . . .

Personally, I FFWD--> thru all the crying scenes. This was the typical formulaic episode where someone dies and everyone cries buckets.

I hate, hate, hate that Elisa's godmother has been killed off already. In telenovelaland, it is usually dangerous to have the goods on the bad guys.

AlL I can say is WOW...both for the acting in last night's episode and for this recao of the sad events. I didn't catch all the dialogue either, but watching the reactions was enough.

Lucio--oh, Eric just rocked his scenes. His heartbreak was so wrenching and real.
Elisa in the shower brought back the scene from THe Big Chill for me. She tried to be strong for Lucio, but all alone, the real heartache comes out. Very touching.
Even the small touches. Dam (DZ) very noticeably in tears telling Lucio about Blanca. The tenderness both he and Gael showed the man really made me tear up more than anything.
And, I'll admit, loved watching the facial reaction that Salvador (Gabs) went through learning it was Blance that died. There are so many actors in this TN that say more with their eyes and expressions than any dialogue.

I was actually glad not to have to go thru any police show up,etc. In most TN's., they are more than aggravating in their ineptitude or slow on the uptake with the evidence right in front of them.

Must say, Flo and Dam were the picture of elegance in their black garb. Have to admit, they make a good looking couple.

Cynderella, Loved the title!!
First of all I admire you for taking this one for the team… and still adding it a very nice sense of humor to the whole thing…

ITA with you about the beanie hat time about no cops, no water, no firefighters, noone seemed to know what to do among the 25,000 people around Elisa…

Also, Blanca’s shop was a very orthodox seamstress house… what is it that they would say exploded as the 2nd explosion? The sewing machine?? The refrigerator?? Its not like this is a chemical plant or even a dry cleaners… what is it that would be THAT explosively flammable? … the fabrics? YEAH RIGHT!!

there are at least 25,000 townspeople nonchalantly walking around waiting to react to the explosion. Not one of these people noticed a man with a Molotov cocktail? ITA… geez!!

A couple of clarifications…
All 25,000 extras (I mean townspeople) are now standing behind Blanca trying to look horrified.
Standing behind Elisa?

Damien tells his mom he is attending a funeral and not the country club and this is not the occasion for Blanca to begin making friends.
For Florencia to begin making friends?

LOVED your way of describing the overall feeling when Gabino showed up to the watch… and it took THREE full men struggling to hold Lucio back from whooping Gabino’s ass…
We all know he did it, we all know you want to whoop his a$$, but you can’t do it in the house of the Lord!

ITA with you that Gael had a very dumb moment to ask why kill Blanca and not Lucio himself?

Lucio wants to know if the priest gave Gabino the heave ho. Lupe assures him that he did. In a soothing voice, he tells him that Gabino if far far far far far far far far….FAR from being the best Christian, but he did not murder his Blanca. GREAT way to depict that… LOVE IT!

Ok, here is my take on that… Blanca did not take Nemo to the hospital, that we know of… But Agusto does remind Nemo that Blanca was the one that stayed overnight at Nemo’s side when Nemo was recovering from the pancake fall in the empty pool… and then the baby died… and Blanca was the one that stayed with her… why? Not sure but she was… I guess Nemo did not have anyone else to stay with her. So Agusto is asking Nemo to recognize that and go to the funeral watch if only as a show of appreciation. Nemo replies something to the effect that Blanca did take Elisa’s side after that… so she has not had anything to thank her for in many years. I loved it when Agusto told Nemo that Bla nca has been more of a mother for Elisa than Nemo ever was. When Nemo finally agreed to go to the funeral she was certainly playing it as doing it ONLY to please him… and by asking him to wait for her (one of his biggest pet pieves is waiting for anyone or anything, especially when he is mad) she knows he will not wait for her so she is just using that as an excuse for him to go alone.

The final scene with Nemo putting Estefania’s jewelry on and saying she will FINALLY get to use those in public, then wondering what Blanca knew and then saying it was a good thing that whatever Blanca was going to tell Agusto, she took it to her grave along with all her ashes…
Gave the creeps.

Daisynjay, ITA on the acting on Eric del Castillo! even red eyes and all!!
i like Raquel Montero's character and her delivery here... such subtle character part...

How long have they been watching in church? i wonder how come Gael or anyone have not come back to check on Elisa... if it has been more than an hr or so...
the previews show that it will be a very touchy air at the cemetery in the burial... family feuds, just like when they burried Estefania and Rosendo...

She doesn’t answer, but gives him the “F you and the horse you road in on” look.

LOL!!! and WHO DOESN'T SHE give that look to?

Thanks for the great recap, Cynderella! I had this on while I was sewing, and apparently I was more focused on the sewing than the show. I don't remember that last half at all, so your recap has kept me on track. Well, I did catch the scene where Carmina was putting on all Estef's good jewelry.

My favorite lines --- "Standing on the corner once in a revealing dress (once), I assume you’re waiting on a cab. Standing on the corner twice? You’re a hooker (but that’s only my prudish opinion)."
and
"She doesn’t answer, but gives him the “F you and the horse you road in on” look. "

How did Ramona, who lives out in the sticks and gets around on a burro, know about the fire and that Blanca was dead? Police scanner/radio? Text message? ESP?

Great recap Cynderella!

I thought the effect of the explosion wasn't that great, the effects in Cañaveral were much more impressive. This is a noticeable trend in these new remakes, the special effects aren't as well made as the telenovelas from the 90's. I wonder if Televisa can't afford the same quality anymore.

As for the events in this episode, maybe La Ermita doesn't have a fire department. I don't think San Benito (Cañaveral's fictional town) had one, but La Ermita looks wealthier and shinier than San Benito.

I once lived in a small town without a fire department and one of the houses near mine burned down. The neighbors tried to put down the fire and they called the firefighters from Veracruz but they arrived hours later and a mother and his two little kids died inside. I was only six years old but the memory is still quite vivid, though probably modified by my own imagination. Nobody ever fixed the house while I still lived there, two years later when we moved to Veracruz all that was still there were remains.

I have to say poor Elisa, I know the impact of such images is big but I can't imagine watching something like that and knowing that the person inside is a loved one.

I agree that Eric del Castillo did a marvelous job. Don Lucio's heartbreak was so palpable, he lost his partner of a lifetime in a horrible way.

The instant I remembered who Horacio was supposed to be I started to cringe.

Jarocha

Jajajá. Loved the way you turned the funeral into a Big Oscar Party. Loved the asides about police, firemen, etc. Loved the 29,000 clueless extras. Loved it all, actually.

Favorite lines:

“She notices that he is pre-occupied because he has stopped talking to her boobies.”

“Seriously, the music was loud!”

”Elisa tells them that Blanca has died. How many more times will I have to repeat this sentence?”

“I did my own investigation and reviewed the scene several times while Lucio was sobbing over body. I had nothing better to do.”

Yeoman’s work, Cynderella!

Jarocha-
What did you mean by 'the instant you realized who Horacio was supposed to be I started to cringe'?

Also, a personal question if it's ok, where did you learn your English?

cathyx:

I thought Horacio was a new character for this version because his counterpart in Cañaveral was barely there and was practically an extra. Armando Araiza is too well known for such part but the storyline for the character has been expanded here. When I realized who he was, I knew he would start the fire that would kill Blanca.

I learned english at school. I had a pretty good teacher in 7th and 8th grade. I also went to an summer program for studying English in Toronto three years ago.

Jarocha

Thank you Jarocha. You must have had a good teacher, your English is very good. I would have thought you were American.

i think they should hire Lucio as a consultant in their police dept (if there IS one)... he is the only one that noticed that the lock on the door that was blown down on the street was closed and he remembers he left it open, he yelled that to Gabino while Dam and Gael were holding him back.

it is no country club.... good one!

Cynderella thanks for your recap for such a sad episode. The scenes with Elisa and Don Lucio were so well acted that their pain was palpable.

Doris - yes, how did Ramona find out about the explosion?

Cynderella - You must be exhausted from internalizing this episode enough to give such a vivid re-cap. Thank you for your time and energy.

I liked the whole Club Iglesias bit and "Nemo".

Nemo? I must have missed something somewhere.

The scene with the jewelry was chilling. This woman needs to end up in the fires of hell right next to Gabino and Alfabitch.

Great acting in this episode (I just finished watching). I'm wondering when Ramona will finally say something about the accident.

Thank you for bringing a little levity to a pretty heavy episode. I loved the riff on Ingrid standing outside the Pro Ce Sa Do Ra and the whole funerary hoe-down/hootenanny theme. Very funny.

I like Nemo...but it seems a little insulting to the cute little fish. LOL. And *thank you* for commenting on her general state of undress for the whole episode. That is the first time I have seen a shirt bra. And is it just me, but are her hooters getting bigger? Or are they just pushing them in our face more?

Oh, while she looked great, I felt the off-the-shoulder mini dress was inappropriate for a funeral. But then, Elisa's dress was pretty low cut and revealing as well.

What the evil ones don't realize is that Margaro missing will just pull AP and Rog closer together.

Now, off to read the recap. Thanks jardinera.

ooops, wrong thread. How did I do that? hahaha

Urban Anthropologist: In the movie Finding Nemo. Nemo, his father, his mother, and all their eggs are orange. Nemo and his father are orange with big blue eyes.

P.S. I am changing her name to something orange each week.

martaivett: Thanks for your corrections.

PSPS: OK, all of them are wearing some sort of bronzer. When Damien and Elisa are walking down the street, he turns his back to the audience to comfort her. Either they are sweat stains on his shirt and his skin is showing through OR he has two bronzer stains on his back. My theory is that Elisa put them there when she was hugging him. I just could be crazy and am seeing things, but everyone was crying so much, that I looked at the scenery and other things.

Cynderella, that's what happens when you have a high def TV. Everything is more visible.

I have to go with Sara that using 'Nemo' for Carmina is a bit insulting to the nice little orange fish... lol

Sara - I noticed Carmina's hooters in this episode, too, (HOW could anyone NOT?) and figured she was wearing her WonderBra under that Hee Haw top. It was Oprah who said, during one of her bra makeover shows, "get those girls saluting the sun" but if Carmina's girls get any higher, she'll suffocate.

"Hee Haw top"
----
That is the *perfect* description.

I admit some of my hatred of Nemo is the fact that Sabine is older than I am but looks amazing. I'm totally jealous.

I have to agree with UA about the great acting. I have not seen this episode yet, but just finished the day's before and I actually rewound a couple of times just to catch Sabine's/Nemo's gestures. Her facial expressions are just enough over the top that you have to laugh. I know she must practice in the mirror.

To mi amiga Azul: I just finished reading Shadow of the Wind (English) and I want to thank you for recommending it. And was it Carlos and EJ who have read it in Spanish? I found it so delightful. Such excellent humor. Has anyone read any other Carlos Ruiz Zafon?

Love how you include the music in your recaps Cynderella...really brings it to life.

A miserable episode though. I was hoping Blanca would just be somewhat injured and suffer amnesia for a few months. But no, they had to kill the dear lady off and break her husband's heart (and ours).

Cynderella your recap was wonderfully delightful, word for word. Loved it!! David Z. was brilliant as a villain in Sortilegio, but (for me) his transition to good guy in LFDD was lacking. He seems to have found his stride in this novela, and I really like how he handles this role. Gabino is also doing a great job as the village villain.

I wonder what it was the problem with Zepeda in LFDD. I actually liked his character at the begining, when he had to run away to the US so maybe the problem was the writing once he got back to town. I wasn't upset about his vengeance desires, after all the things the Curiel's had put his character through but I agree that there was something that made it hard to empathize with him.

Is he coming off less angry here? Or do you think he works better with Boyer than with Sandra Echeverría?

Or is this just a case were you think Damián is simply more likeable than Iván? But he is making his own mistakes too.

It's funny you all are bringing up David Zepeda. I thought the same things about him as you. In Sortilegio he was great as a bad guy. In LFDD his character fell flat, and I figured he must just be better at playing a dark character than a good one. But in this TN, I like him a lot playing the good guy. So that tells me it was probably bad direction. He seemed to be overacting in LFDD. Trying too hard. I'm impressed with his acting in this one.

I personally felt that Ivan should have gained custody of Alex and left for the United States permanently. He had more chemistry with the evil Maripaz than his True Love™ Lucia, who was as exciting as a wet rag. I enjoyed the relationships between Ivan and all of the male characters...not with the female characters.

They had Ivan doing stupid things like making out with the wall and dreaming of having sex with Lucia in a pigeon coop. The Ivan character was frustrated and stuck because everyone including his family was basically like "your very existence is messing up everybody's life."

Plus, I was sorry they never had Ivan develop sibling relationships with Judith & David.

I think the chemistry b/w the Damian character & the rest of the La Ermita characters is way better than the Ivan character and the rest of the characters in Ivan's story and none (most) of the La Ermita characters are acting like Damian's existence is a pain in their booty.

Interesting conversation on DZ. ITA w/Anon207 that perhaps if Ivan had been given more opportunities to interact with the few normal people in LFDD (Judith and David), his character would have been more grounded and well rounded. His relationships with the male characters were positive (for the most part) whereas most of his female interactions were those of frustration. Based on how he is performing here, cathyx nailed it; bad direction.

He's also played a good guy in an afternoon TN where he and William Levy were perhaps brothers or at least good friends. He's a good guy in that one too though reviews of that TN aren't too good; the little I saw of him and his acting was good. However, there is serious eye candy with the rich family having a pool.

Thank you Cynderella. I also think Nemo is too nice for Carmeany, but it does make me picture that neon orange glow. :) I also enjoyed your comparing the wake/funeral to a hot party. That dress Flo chose to wear was ridiculous. Fabulous, but ridiculous.

I also think that Eric del Castillo did a fab job as Lucio in this episode. I am glad he is on to Gabino. Perhaps his being so openly vocal about Gabino being a murderer will protect him from anotrher attempt since people will for sure take a hard look at Gabino.

By the way, the thing Gabino said to Paloma as they met on the church steps is that she looks more like her mother each day. Ramona did not like that one bit.

Paolo has NO shame. Macking on Elisa in the middle of her grief. I really hope Lolita remains unharmed, because I don't think Elisa could stand losing her third mother.

I also like DZ in this role. I think Damian is a good fit for him. It's a character with gravitas and an undercurrent of sadness (compared to Gael's bubbly personality). But also one who loves deeply and has a real connection to the people around him.

R la O, I read the 2nd Carlos Ruiz Zafón, The Angel's Game, last fall. It was good but not nearly as good as the first one. The third, The Prisoner of Heaven, is due in translation in June.

Thanks, Cynderella, for the fine recap. "Nemo" is fitting, really, for Carmina since it's the Latin for "no one" or "nobody." At the end of the day and in spite of her narcissism and other things best described by nuestra amiga Elna Jung, she will be at best a footnote, or "nobody." Nasty, nasty woman with BSC eyes.

did anyone notice that AssUsto's hair is improving slowly over the last few episodes? Also, he actually even behaved half-way decently by reminding Carmina that Blanca was there for her when she needed someone.

Cynder: Great recap - I'm a little late on this one.

I didn't find Angelique Boyer's crying very believable. With all the good acting going around her, it just didn't come across. Otherwise, I like her now that I've gotten used to her new figure.

Pasofino, i think you got a point there but i am not sure if its her acting of just her face... take other actresses for example... when Kate del Castillo or Margarita Rosa de Francisco or even Monica Paleta cry, their face changes, you can tell they are crying and not laughing... with Angelique, i am not sure if its her barbie/porcelain doll face, but it just does not ring true because her crying face and her happy/laughing face are almost identical... not sure if i am explaining myself right...

Good morning all, so sorry I couldn't comment before now, bad wi-fi all weekend long.

Cynderella, you did a fantastic job with this episode. Ay dios mio, two explosions from one cocktail and a town full of people yet nobody saw our tormented arsonist, hee. I can't believe you had me cracking up throughout your entire recap. This was a tragedy, I know, but the "ho-down at the church" was too, too funny. Some of my favorite lines:

"She notices that he is pre-occupied because he has stopped talking to her boobies.", "Oh my gosh! Finally, a phone!", "Florencia tells Alfonsina to tell Paolo that they went out dancing at the funeral party.", and Sean John summer collection.

I've heard that in Mexico (or some parts) it's pretty common to have a funeral very close to someone's death, but the same day that the body was burned up? Sometimes these telenovela time-line continuums are just too unbelievable. I'll never forget one death in Llena de Amor where someone was poisoned, then in practically the next scene her ashes are brought to the funeral in a cookie tin. Oops, and about the autopsy...needless to say nobody ever figured out she was poisoned. At least in this one Lucio noticed the lock.

Cynderella, thanks again for bringing your particular brand of levity to this hour of misery. Great comments everyone.

Thanks Cynderella, this is so well done. Poor Blanca, with all the drama and preening from the other characters, she seemed almost an afterthought at her own funeral... a detail which you cleverly highlighted with this.

A favorite line for me:

"Elisa will not look better than her at the somber occasion. I admire that! I really do."

How very droll.

I'm still devastated by that blast and the loss of Blanca even though you all warned me that it was coming.

Rosemary la O and Blue Lass, I did read both La Sombra del Viento and El Juego del Ángel and enjoyed both very much although like Blue Lass, I thought the first was much better. I did not know about . I shall order it today.

Carlos

Marta: I hadn't thought of that.

I wouldn't put it past Be-gone-ya or Alfie to start a rumor that LUCIO started the fire and locked Blanca in the shop on purpose...since he WAS the last person seen leaving the shop...
