Abismo de pasión #23 4/11/12: an engagement party, a slapfest, a stolen kiss, a few broken hearts and a lot of ooohs and aaahhhs...

Recap by Marta Ivett

Repeats:
Gael and Damian exchange comments about Damian’s relationship with Fina and  Fina’s  obsession over the years to throw mud at Elisa’s reputation… Damian asks Gael to pls go to the party, if only just to count on a familiar face. Gael just sighs.
Fina visiting Elisa and asking her to come to the party in exchange for La Anita to become sole buyer of ToadHead’s habanero’s crops.

Tonight:
Damian apologizes to Guido on the ‘welcome skit’ he had with Paolo. Guido admits they have never got along, but asks Damian to be the grown reasonable one and try to get along with Paolo (really, Guido? You can’t control him and you are asking Damian to try to?) Damian says he has tried but Paolo has never helped it. Guido claims Paolo is jealous of Damian. Guido is embarrassed that these issues have resurfaced in Fina’s house. Guido tells Damian he understands if Elisa is an old friend and he must have reason to defend her from Paolo. That is correct. Surprise! Guido brings Damian his amulet, from Mexico City, in Damian’s room, remember whey you were a kid you would not take it off, not even to shower. Damian smiles at the amulet once Guido leaves.

ToadHead (apparently with new eye glasses, these are not cracked/scratched) gets home. Medusa is either wiping sweat off or tarantula oil or maybe Proactive lotion ON her face… ToadHead Lets Medusa know that Gael resigned… but that is not important. I went to talk to Inmundo, will do the paternity tests after all. This is a firm decision. Of course Medusa opposes… How will they get Elisa’s blood? ToadHead says Inmudno will figure out a way. Medusa claims Elisa is not dumb, she will figure it out.

At dinner table, Medusa asks ToadHead to sell everything and leave town once and for all… you have always wanted to start over… leave all the gossip and all the intrigue behind.  He says he is just an habanero farmer.. if we sell everything and leave, it will be the ruin of us.

At Ramona’s, Paloma looks gorgeous (even though she is not wearing the necklace that Ramona had shown her) and as she is about to head out the door, Gael comes and skips a beat at seeing her (but only a beat.. ) he came to see if she wanted him to escort her to the party… Ramona asks Gael firmly to take care of her. No prob, I will. Ramona smiles wide once they leave.

At Arango Hacienda, both Damian and Flo are dressed up… lets go to the garden, almost all the guests are here…

Paloma and Gael arrive, he suggests they sit at a far unnoticed table… she is ok with that

Gabino is standing around as a bar bouncer waiting for the riot to begin…

The engaged couple come out… just as Elisa is arriving walking the runway/driveway (dressed in the white dress we saw on Estefania on ep 1, when the Castanon had invited the Arangos for dinner), seems she causes a lot of commotion…

At the main table, Padre Lupe asks Fina what she is pretending/planning with inviting Elisa. She claims she is just trying to make amends with the Castanon Bouvier family.

Gael asks Paloma what Elisa is doing here. She tells him Elisa was invited by Flo herself, and Paloma goes to get Elisa.

Paolo stands and starts to walk toward the table Elisa is sitting at… Guido comes out to lazzo him and remind him he does not want Paolo within 50 meters of her. Even if she is THAT attractive.  .. ‘e per que no? .. per que no! y basta! (that’s what I say!!)

At another table, GossipGirl and her children are gossiping about Elisa daring to come.

At main table, Flo excuses herself … Damian is sitting by himself at the moment. He and Elisa exchange stares…

At Castanon’s, Lolita notices Elisa went to the party (the old pillow decoy trick).  ‘now things are really going to get good/interesting in this house!’.
Lolita goes to Estefania’s room, notices the dresses on the bed and puts them away… On her way out, Medusa catches her, but Lolita manages to just say Elisa fell asleep after making a whole wardrobe for her appearance at Project Runway final round in record time…

Flo and Fina assign Paolo the task/job of entertaining Elisa so everyone sees them together… make good of the sacrifice of having her there… so Damian will realize ‘that girl’ is worthless…  ‘ni modo… let it all be for the happiness of my niece…’

At the trio of friends table, Gael is mad at Elisa for having come, after Dona Fina has treated her so bad over the years… Paloma defends Elisa, but Elisa decides to be honest and tells Gael about what Fina told her… Gael won’t buy Fina’s good intentions. Elisa says ‘had to try it’… Yeah, he is worse financially than ever.. even more since you quit on him. Now he really will have no one to help him out. Happy now?

Paolo invites himself to the table… Gael just stares at him, and Damian sees that and is smoking fire out his nose remotely from main table.

Medusa (who is eating sugar cookies, sorry Medusa, but that won’t help sweeten you up) keeps trying to convince ToadHead that the paternity tests is not worth it…  I am afraid you will get more anxious/angry/depressed than ever when you get the results if they are what we expect…
Phone rings, its Inmundo, Medusa tells ToadHead it was a wrong number.

At party, Paolo keeps making conversation and Gael continues his ironic tone responses. Smart Gael does not buy that Paolo has become so fond of a small farm town like La Ermita. Dance music (Son de la Loma) begins and Paolo wants to dance with Elisa. She is reluctant. Paloma suggests all four of them dance (Gabino smiles and walks right by Gael and Paloma)… So there are four dancing and one going through an internal combustion at main table… when he gets up dear fiancee pulls him over to be dancers no. 5 and 6.  And we get the stares contest… Elisa staring at Damian and holding her nausea at dancing with Paolo, Gael staring at Elisa, Paloma flustered at Gael (I don’t blame her one bit!)..   Gael can’t take it anymore and leaves poor Paloma standing on the dance floor… Elisa is clearly suffering…

At main table Guido is not happy seeing Paolo near Elisa. Fina says let him have some fun.

Paloma argues with Gael…tells him Elisa had already met Paolo and didn’t even like him. Gael is mad about Elisa dancing with him. Paloma has heard enough, not only he left her standing in the dance floor, but he is also mad about Elisa… Gael plays stupid asking ‘what do you know about my obsession for Elisa??’ but Paloma asks him not to underestimate her IQ… everyone can tell. I want to go home. Gael offers to take her, she refuses… can take care of myself.

Elisa realizes her friends are gone… Paolo won’t let her go away… now that this is the most important moment of the party… he drags her back..

Guido and Fina announce the engagement between Flo (que bella sei tu) and Damian.. Fina all but forces Damian to put the ring on Flo’s finger right then and there (he would rather have it be a more private moment). Elisa is about to faint of the pain and tears… Fina keeps pushing Damian to kiss Flo. This is too much for Elisa, who goes away…

After they were already in bed, ToadHead wants to check up on Elisa… He finds the pillows and yells for Lolita, who is trying to deny knowing where Elisa is, but Medusa gives him the blow, she is at Arango party, along with almost all of La Ermita humans.

Both Damian and Paolo are looking for Elisa, but young GossipGirl holds Paolo back to dance.

At La Anita stables, with Damian’s white horse, Elisa is letting her tears and frustration out. Damian walks behind her … asks what she is doing there, she came to take a break from the noise and crowds… he thanks her for being there, knowing how much effort she had to make to go… she comments he loves horses as much as before… Damian compliments on her looks… she does not welcome that kind of compliment at this moment from him… He does not think it is so wrong to do it… he notices her amulet… she says it became a habit for her to wear it, she is sure he must have lost his… nope, still have it. what would you give me if I proved I still have it? .. whatever you want… he pulls it out.. see? I still have it… I can’t believe it… can I REALLY ask whatever I want? / Yes… (slowly approaches and kisses her without asking anything)

Elisa pulls away, she is upset, .. why do you do this?? We are at your engagement party!... I just felt the impulse to do it!... of course! And surely you agree with everyone else that I am a no-moral woman willing to go with any man that asks her…  No, that is not true!! I swear I did not mean to offend you!... no need, I thought you were honest but I see I was wrong. (she won’t listen to him) You,  Damian! no longer fit with La Ermita.. your place is in Mexico with your fiancee… leave and never come back!!...

Paolo and Flo figure out that neither Damian or Elisa are around, Flo rants at him for not doing his duty of ‘being with Elisa all night’ .. he defends himself saying all the single girls in town are sticking to him… they spot Elisa coming back. Paolo can tell Elisa seems to be running away from someone or something. He will find out…

As Elisa is trying to walk OUT the runway, in comes ToadHEad with another moment to outdo his STUPID impulses and slaps her right in front of everyone.. Again we get Padre Lupe yelling at him that she is HIS daughter! (are these panama hats suddenly the fashion IN thing at La Ermita?) Everyone begins to gather around standing by them… ToadHEad grabs Elisa hard and drags her out of there… Padre Lupe looks on sad… Fina asks Flo where Damian is… ‘what are you waiting for to go find him?’…

Right outside the Arango hacienda gate/arch, ToadHead yells at Elisa and won’t let her tell him why she came until she has to yell it to him… ToadHead does not seem to believe her…he could swear she came to see Damian… she yells at him saying Damian means nothing to her… even if you don’t believe me, I only came her for YOU! and it is not fair I had to swallow my dignity and you slapped me in front of everyone!!... he is not thankful.

Paloma gets home and tells Ramona she came home alone, and about her frustrations with Gael only caring about Elisa, only watching over Elisa… ‘Gael will never notice me no matter what I do, he only has eyes for Elisa’… Ramona argues Paloma has always known that… yes, but I can’t take it anymore… Paloma asks her for a witchcraft to make her forget Gael.

Still alone at the stables with his horse, Damian is thinking of Elisa, and is still teary-eyed. Flo comes behind him.  He uses same excuse wording Elisa used, escaping from noise and crowd…  are you sure you ‘te engentaste’? or is it something else?... Flo seems to reprieve that they have not been intimate (were they?) since they got to La Ermita… she seems more than willing to get hanky-panky right there at the stable… he ust says ‘lets go back to the party’ (not exactly original but works as turn down/off)..
(Is this beautiful white horse going to become a silent witness to the love story here?)

Elisa gets home (well, she is dragged into the house, miracle she missed hitting the table with her head), ToadHead is still miffed. Medusa twists the knife on him reminding him about the dress being Estefania’s dress for the dinner with the Arangos. Toadhead does a note checking and ties Medusa and Gabino’s meeting about the possibility of Fina buying his crops again and what Elisa told him Fina suggested to her. Medusa tries to blame it on Dolores, has influence on Elisa, but ToadHead says no way anyone else would work at his quinta and take all this abuse for the pay he gives Dolores.

Dolores is consoling Elisa, but Elisa does not feel like talking about what happened or about Damian… Elisa is too upset to talk … Lolita gives in… kisses her goodnight. You truly look beautiful… Elisa just cries in her bed…

Previews:
Damian sits on dad’s desk.
Elisa tells Paloma Damian kissed her.
Seems Damian and Elisa meet again, maybe at cemetery…
Flo ups the ante… she suggests to Damian ‘lets get civil-married today…’

Wasn't that a frustrating episode? You did such a great job getting all the detail Marta. Some of these characters talk so blasted fast, I can't catch anything. Thanks!

Wasn't too happy with our young galans last night. Gael, who I adore, made me want to give him one of Padre's head slaps last night. And Dam...can I say "YEAH ELISA!!" I know it was suppose to be a romantic moment, but when he grabbed Elisa for the kiss, I thought...Hey, you just put a ring on it with someone else, and you're making a play for someone else. I loved the way she told him just that, rather refreshing instead of being the blushing, gushing heroine. This girl has spunk from her year's of abuse!

But Assgusto--there is no excuse. How the blazes can that man show his face in that town? I mean, despite the fact he is hideous to look at. Betting is Gael was around, he would have decked him. Too bad.

And did I see the lightbulbs and twinkle fairies over Enrique's head as he looked at Flo? PLEASE tell me this isn't the pairing that may happen down the road...

My guesses is the beautiful horsie will be like his counterpart in Cuando--the trusted confident who can't spill secrets.

Oh, and one more suggestion: someone needs to open a dance studio in this town. (Though once they went to a slow dance, Paolo showed some nice moves.)

Marta, perfect title! This was great and I so appreciate the humor you sprinkled throughout, particularly "Medusa is either wiping sweat off or tarantula oil or maybe Proactive lotion ON her face… " I also enjoyed your insight "Gael comes and skips a beat at seeing her (but only a beat.. "). Most excellent!

No need for me to sum up my feelings on the episode - daisy already did that and far better than I could have. Gael, shake off the notiion of what you think you want - love and devotion are staring you in the face! And Dam, you can't have your cake and eat it too! As others have said, he has not been fair to Flo and what he's doing to Elisa is simply cruel.

Elisa has overcome adversity and she will not be put down! My new heroine.

And Assgusto has secured his place in hell. I can't even stand looking at him any more. He and Carmina are the most loathsome pairing I can ever recall.

Off tomorrow, happy weekend all.

Diana

Bien hecho, Marta.

I was so angry on Elisa's behalf last night. Getting manhandled by Paolo and publicly slapped by Assgusto at the same party she didn't want to attend is more than anyone should take.

If I were she I would fake my own death and disappear to D.F. And show up in five years to show everyone up.

What is beginning to mystify me about her situation is how someone like Alfonsina can manufacture a bad rep for a girl like Elisa who can't be proven to be a mujer suela.

I think when Toadhead arrived at the party, he actually mistook Elisa in that white dress for Estefania and that's why he decked her. And that's why Padre Lupe yelled out "It's your DAUGHTER!" because he realized what Assgusto was thinking/seeing.

Thanks much Marta for the recap of a very exciting episode!

I thought Elisa and Damián were going to get caught at the stables - didn't the previews imply that? It was really a relief that they weren't.

I agree with everyone's frustrations here... I was soooo dissappointed in an episode where they could have done much more...
Damian was very selfish in stealing a kiss from Elisa just after breaking her heart, and he knows he did since he could see her tears... (was he mad at her thinking that since she was with Paolo she might be more of what Fina said? naah! he should know better, esp knowing Paolo)...
Elisa was right in not letting him explain himself, there is NO EXCUSE for what he did... what was he going to say? I just got engaged to Poop but I love you??
Gael... if you screwed it up with Paloma and she did not want you to accompany her home, why oh why did you leave Elisa alone with that jerk?.. and I agree, that if he had been around, AssGusto would have got a more stunning response to the slap, if he got to slap to begin with.
Elisa had the worst part of the night, and as you all stated, she was there only to do her dad a favor, not for her own interests which were to be as far away from there as she could... and what does she get for it? to be slurped by Paolo and slapped by AssGusto in front of everyone! more than ANYONE should take... my advice is let your dad sink himself and leave him, Elisa! you can move in with your godparents permanently!
Ramona seemed to be the only one right last night... other than Elisa.
Guido seems to be turning into a wishy washy guy, lots of warning but no action, and Paolo knows it.
Even Florencia/Princess Poop seems to be somewhat weak here, without the brain of Fina to plan the moves.

I continue my theory that Enrique will eventually offer himself to Princess Poop as a consolation prize, or maybe an accomplice against Elisa... and if that is the case and Gael has anything to do with it, i can see Enrique's face taking some beating for it.

Audrey, very good point on...
"I think when Toadhead arrived at the party, he actually mistook Elisa in that white dress for Estefania and that's why he decked her. And that's why Padre Lupe yelled out "It's your DAUGHTER!" because he realized what Assgusto was thinking/seeing."
now it makes sense what Padre yelled at him, and Padre knows what Estefania was wearing that night because he had to go there to get Gael... would he remember what Estefania was wearing?

Audrey you make a great point on A**'s slap of Elisa, but once he got out of the stupor, if he was any kind of human being, he would have apologized or offered her a consoling arm, not drag her like a criminal out of the party. He's just pond scum, and I would so love to set a very large algae eating chemical his way. Please TN gods, make this man go away..

If we have to put up with this character for the whole TN, why couldn't they have cast a decent villian-like actor like Sergio Goyri. At least we would enjoy his evilness (and he ain't bad in the looks department).

Marta(?): Great detailed recap of an exciting episode.

Both Elisa and Flo looked great last night. There seems to be no end to Alfonsina's scheming. What a mean b***h sicking Paolo on Elisa. Elisa seems to have them all figured out - she knows what they've been calling her, and she still resists. She is the strongest heroine I've seen lately.

At last we had the big kiss. Both of them were feeling it. Where did Damian think he could go after that? Elisa was right - man, you just put a ring on another woman's finger - what are you doing?

I was hoping that when Alfonsina put him on the spot that he would think of some way of finessing the situation - like recognize Florencia and tell the crowd that more will come later.

Oops - I forgot, he's supposed to be around 25 and that type of thought would have to come from a more maturer mind.

Gael - I still love you even though you acted like a boob.

Oh, I'm not trying to excuse Asshat, just explaining his initial reaction. But we all know that Asshat never admits his wrong-doing, so of course he is going to drag his daughter out of there and never apologize.

"Would he remember what Estefania was wearing?" There have been many comments of Elisa's resemblance to her mother. So even if Padre Lupe didn't recognize the dress, he would have realized how very much Elisa looked like her mother dressed up like her mother used to do - sophisticated feminine dress, hair up, etc. And I suspect he had already guessed Elisa was wearing one of her mother dresses because she didn't have a party dress in her regular wardrobe.

Remember Estefania and Padre Lupe were very close, as Estefania was quite religiously devout. I bet Padre remembers a great many details about Estefania.

Audrey

Thanks so much Marta. There wasn't a ton of dialogue this episode, just a bunch of tense glances. I was stressed out about what was in store for Elisa at this party. I didn't think it would be Assgusto who would be serving up the humilation though. However, I am sure that had she had enough time, Alfie would have done something just as nasty to her. It was bad enough that Elisa had to watch Damian put a ring on someone else's finger and dance with Paolo.

As for our two boys...well, they were acting like just that last night. I agree with all of your assessments. Both Gael and Damian needed a slap upside the head for their caddish behavior towards Paloma and Elisa.

On the plus side, all of the ladies looked lovely last night-- Paloma, Elisa, Flo, even Fina.

It's funny how often TNs employ the mindless galán sleepwalking through the motions of prenuptial ceremonies and activities while pining after another. Of course without that we wouldn't have half the stories! But this one is particularly bad. Damián seems to not realize at all that there is something seriously wrong with his behavior towards both Flo and Elisa.

Damian obviously had already asked Flo to marry him, that's why he came home - to tell his Mom. So why wasn't Flo already wearing an engagement ring?

I really disliked watching David Zepeda in LFDD, I found him quite unappealing. Yet he seems perfectly suited as the somewhat quiet, reserved Damián character. Of course it is likely the much better director. The way Damián kissed Elisa was far more refined (and hot) than how Ivan ever kissed Lucia which always grossed me out.

Julio Aleman passed away yesterday. He was one of our favorite older actors here on CarayCaray. He brought his wonderful talent to many of the tns we've covered on this blog: La Verdad Oculta; Tontas; Soy Tu Duena; Destilando Amor; Amor Real; and Corazon Salvaje (as the narrator, but he was Juan DD in the 1968 movie). He could play the cold villain, or the warm father figure equally well. He always looked elegant exuded grace.

Rest in peace Julio! Hope that you, Yolanda Merida and Pedro Armendáriz Jr. are having a great time up in actors' heaven!

marta i - thanks for the recap! I was at the NHL playoff game (we squeaked by Detroit Redwings 3-2 … a miracle from the way the Preds played) and look forward to watching my recording of this episode.

ruh-roh! Now that Carmina knows there is a DNA test on the line, we in Viewerville just know the results will be skewed or else Carmina is busted in her brainwash-Augie plot of.

"Gabino is standing around as a bar bouncer waiting for the riot to begin…" BuaHahahahahaaaaaa! Loved your Project Runway comment, too!

" . . . and Damian sees that and is smoking fire out his nose remotely from main table."
Ooooooer! I'll bet he did his signature 'cara de raton', too.

Carmina and Doctor T need to get text-messaging plans for their cell phones. It would stop the "wrong number" rings, and we can wait for one of them can do a Tiger Woods and get busted.

Augusto me da muchisimo asco=
Augasco. I wish Carmina would morph into Lorena Bobbitt and 'take care' of him.

daisynjay - Pond scum is too good for Augusto. Augusto is the poo of bottom-feeding catfish that eat pond scum.

"If I were she I would fake my own death and disappear to D.F. And show up in five years to show everyone up." --- Good one, UA! That is in the Telenovela Rules as herone plan option B. ;-)

That is sad news. Thanks for sharing Vivi. I so like Julio in the TN's I saw him in. Always very dapper and debonair. I remember looking him up once when I was watching Las Tontas and was swooning over pictures of him in his early years. If I remember right, he had cancer? May he rest in peace.

Julio Aleman.. wow. may he rest in peace...
i remember his early years right around the CS movie... and his tv show with Topo Gigio, i recall Topo Gigio calling for him Juuliooooo!!! JUUUUUUUUliooooooo!!
and yes, he is one of those actors who matured and got even better while in his late years with the characters he played in last 10 yrs or so... most of the time a judge or some kind of authority figure.

as far as his starring in novelas, i remember Pobre Clara with him and Magda Guzman, both in their 40s, i think.

then played judges at Gotita de Amor, Nunca te Olvidare and CS '09.
Dr Avellaneda in Destilando, and many villain roles in other novelas.

sorry Pobre Clara was with him and Chela Castro.

My beloved Don Julio Aleman is gone. At least I can put this out there in space and someone will understand. Watching the news on the local Univision station was where I first heard of his death yesterday.

His beautiful, beautiful voice with the clearest diction ever produced some of the most beautiful Spanish I have ever heard.

Thank you, Don Julio, for all that you gave us.

Nice work Marta! You really took one for the team last night, it wasn't our most pleasant episode. Thank you for your excellent and detailed recap. Your comments always crack me up.

Diana, enjoy your long weekend. Yay!

Wow, that was some party. Why oh why can't Toadhead let his daughter be her own person? The guy is a sadist, pure and simple. She should get the heck out of his house pronto. Living in a tent on her tierras would be preferable to living in Toadhead's house of pain.

If I were Flo I would be itching to get out of La Ermita. From a normal person's point of view the locals, including her caddish novio, act like a bunch of crazies. Then again, maybe the Landuchis aren't quite normal themselves.

daisynjay, ITA with you on two counts: wish Gael had been at the party when Assgusto showed up, and the town needs a dance studio, lol.

Audrey, great observation about ToadHead mistaking Elisa for Estefania. That makes a lot of sense.

More later...

Vivi, I just read your comment about Julia Aleman. You are so right that he has always been a Caray Caray favorite. I remember recognizing his voice immediately as the narrator for Corazon Salvaje. Such a memorable and elegant man.

daisynjay, yes he was a real heartthrob as a young man and he retained his good looks as he aged.

Thanks Sara, EJ, and Marta for this week's recaps -- I am way behind but hoping to catch up tonight (while the Lad is at his banjo lesson)! I LOVE PARTIES. But just in TNs, not in real life.

Marta, Thanks for this superb recap of a difficult to watch episode.

Let me first say my goodbyes here to Don Julio Aleman. I posted about it yesterday on Familia as soon as I found out. I have a Univision Noticias app on my ipad so got the news as soon as they posted it. How sad that he had been ill for quite some time. I remember seeing him at an award show 2 or 3 years ago and realizing that he was super thin and drawn looking but of course his charm and elegant looks carried the day. Sad about Yolanda too. Another elegant talent gone forever. Alas.

The Washington Post carried Julio Aleman's passing on its main web page earlier today which says something about the growing audience for TN's in this country. He was a class act kind of guy and will be missed. Particularly good as don Ernesto, the attorney, in STuD?

Anyone else wondering if the caballo blanco here is the same equine actor that portrayed Silvia Navarro's Gitana in CME? Can horsies roll their eyes when humans get all stupid in the stable?

Thanks, Marta, for a(nother) great recap! You have an amazing gift for catching dialog.

Thanks Marta...you had a very dramatic, pivotal episode. And ahhhhh, the sexual tension! Wowza.

I have to admit I was so entranced by the scene in the stables, I didn't even feel critical of the love befuddled lad...more like, Yessss, now you realize...it's Elisa you love. Go for it!

Clearly I would not make a good chaperone.

Now we have to sit back and let them work out these misunderstandings for a few hundred years, but that was a dynamite scene. Much hotter than those endless rose-strewn writhing in the sheets scenes IMO.

I want Assgusto gone NOW! Maybe he was blinded by the dress, but this man has shown no common sense since this soap started.

I hate his glasses. I hate his scarecrow hair. I despise everything about this character.

I suppose if Elisa left her home in the inmates of this dumpy little town would really have reason to call her a zorra.

Bump this guy off now.

Should have said..." then the inmates of this dumpy little town..."

Doris, congrats on your Preds victory over Detroit. They are a very hard team to beat.

"Augusto is the poo of bottom-feeding catfish that eat pond scum." Snort!! Darn, forgot to set my tea down for that one.

Dibs on JudyB as my chaperone!

Yesterday I was watching El Gordo y La Flaca and they were on set at Abismo talking to some of the stars. They were interviewing Augusto and I had a visceral reaction to the guy, whereas everyone else seemed so normal and pleasant, even Fina. Just goes to show what a great job the actor is doing with the role. (Angelique said her parents were staying in town along with a cousin from France. So sweet.)

Stuff we learned in this episode:

Damian & Flo haven't congressed in a while.

Estefania's stuff is still in the house.

Disgusto pays Delores crap wages.

Enrique has the hots for Florencia (Ugh, I wouldn't put it past Flo to sleep with Ricky and pass the baby off as Damian's, since they have congressed in the past).

OT for Cap'n Sylvia - I'll cheer for your SJ Sharks tonight.... but only until we have to play then. ;-)

More OT ... P.S. for Cap'n Sylvia - Redwings are always difficult to beat; they are very, very good skaters and players!
The great thing about Preds playoff games --- during first intermission last night, we had Michael W. Smith singing lead for some oldies rock songs with Small Time Rock Stars band (my favorite band during intermissions) http://www.stevemandile.com/STRS.html a/k/a Sixwire http://sixwire.com/. The guys are awesome. Last week, we had Ricky Skaggs. Last year, during playoffs, we had Alice Cooper, John Elefante, and I think even Felix Cavaliere singing with the bands during intermission. They just sort of show up (although I'm sure it's worked out ahead of time) . . . but we never know if and who will show up and we love it; which the min-concerts alone are worth the price of the playoff tickets. ;o)

I agree that Yolanda Merida is another great loss... I LOVED LOVED her Dona Juana character in Amor Real and her Manuela character in Cuando me enamoro was great too.. such a classy lady.

Mike, you had me chuckling with...
Can horsies roll their eyes when humans get all stupid in the stable?
so true!

Marta:
Thank you for recapping this annoying episode. As usual you got all the detail—I so appreciate your work.

Well, the network built us up for the big Damian/Elisa kiss and it took place only moments after Damian sullenly put the ring on Flo's finger. Gack, nasty.

Daisynjay: I think beautiful horsie is the SAME horsie as in Cuando. A nod to Vivi, if they can reuse the Pear Robe, then why not borrow the same white horsie?

Dance studio, Yes!

I 100% agree with Sylvia that Augusto is sadistic. Worse, he is martyred and sadistic, a really ugly combination. He is one nasty bastard.

EJ

Well, thanks MIke for your stable humor! It made me laugh as I totally agree. And the horse is really beautiful so it might be a San Angel darling for repeated cameos in telenovelas. That might be quite a nice income for the real owner and we get the benefit of one being on these shows being 100% pure and beautiful all the way through!

How can we be dashed into nausea then soar into ecstasy in one segment of one episode. I love the scarecrow imagery for Disagosto. I am almost hoping Carmeany does mess with the DNA test report so Elisa might pack her bags and go live on her own lands away from the two most hateful people (Alphabitchsina making it a third).

Wonderful recap Marta!

I have to say that I loved this episode. They put events from two episodes of Cañaveral together and worked much better than I expected.

First, I have to say how much I lament Julio Alemán's passing. He was an icon for Mexican and dare I say Latin American television. He also contributed in films and he worked until the end, it's going to be so sad not seeing him in the ads for Perfume de Gardenias. Marta, I do remember him with Topo Gigio, I hope those who saw him as children will remember him too.

Now, onto the episode.

The music was flawless, I loved that they used a Son instead of the usual telenovela music that we get in those novelas from Mexico City. I loved the look of the Arango Hacienda, so pretty. And also the kiss scene with the white horse in the middle of all that red and both Elisa and Damián in white/light colors, that looked so beautiful. I think Angelli Nesma's productions tend to have an excellent taste for colors and settings. She definitely learned well from her years as an apprentice of Valentín Pimsteín.

They actually put together the happenings of two Cañaveral episodes and I thought that worked quite well.

The one change I noticed from the kissing scene was the same as I've noticed in Elisa/Damián scenes from the past. Both of them are much more aware of their feelings than their Cañaveral counterparts at this point:

-Damián wore his amulet around the neck while Pablo had it in his pocket.

-Damián was also so much more emotional in the scene and he seemed to have an urgent need to kiss Elisa while Pablo wasn't all that aware of what he was doing until he kissed Julia, he acted on impulse and was surprised by his own actions when Julia started going off on him.

By the way, this is the Cañaveral scene that was used in Mi Pecado (with some slight changes), if you have time and would like to compare:

Mi Pecado scene (unfortunately cut to the amulet showing moment, so it doesn't show much).

Cañaveral scene (at the end of the episode, the fallout from the kiss happened in the next one, but it was basically the same thing that we saw in Abismo).

Silvia:

" They were interviewing Augusto and I had a visceral reaction to the guy, whereas everyone else seemed so normal and pleasant, even Fina. Just goes to show what a great job the actor is doing with the role"

It's interesting that this is the second time Alejandro Camacho plays Angelique's father in a telenovela. The first time, in Alma de Hierro, he was very loving, although strict, and she was a good kid but she did give him alot of headaches with some of her mistakes. Now he is the one making her life difficult in this one. Blanca Guerra, who plays Alfonsina here, played Camacho's wife and Angelique's mother in AdH.

The only problem I can find with the horse being the same from Cuando is that Cuando was shot in Mexico City and Baja California while Abismo is shot in Yucatán. I wonder if it isn't easier to just find a white horse nearby instead of transporting the poor horsie all over the country.

As much as Damian was wrong for getting his groove on with Elisa in the stables, Florencia is not blameless either:

Her fiance goes home to announce his marriage to his mom---without HER.

He had been in town for DAYS without calling her

He's not the one who sent for her, ALFONSINA is the one who brought her to town

They are allegedly engaged, yet he still has no ring. She has a hand me down ring from Alfonsina.

IMO their relationship was in trouble before Elisa even became a serious thought in Damian's mind.

I understand, she knows she's losing her man very quickly to this Elisa girl, that's supposedly such good friends with Damian that Florencia's never heard of her before. But all this pawing and clawing and clinging and tantrums is only going to drive him into Elisa's arms.

Thanks for the clips Jarocha. I really like the music in Canaveral. It seems that they bring some elements of that sax heavy music into Abismo. I agree about the colors in the scene with Damian and Elisa. I noticed it too. Just really lovely to look at. The director/designers have a good eye.

Damian seems like a total repressed mess, emotionally, but I did like the kissing scene anyway. That poor wall from LFDD has real reason to be jealous now.

I really like the visuals on this show. They are similar to Mi Pecado and that is an excellent thing. The photography in that show was true art. Little things like a shot down a rainy street or the hoochie framed in the confessional screen were very striking. I'm seeing some of that same sensibility here.

Thanks Marta! I loved wiping OFF sweat or putting ON tarantula oil or maybe Proactiv. Also loved "Elisa walking the runway / driveway" and "so there are 4 dancing and 1 going thru an internal combustion".

Sorry, Daisy, it looks like Enrique and Flo will be grinding and groaning down the road.

I think this could be Gitana #2 from CME. Remember the first Gitana always acted naughty when Renata tried to snuggled? They have found a well behaved horse, and like the well behaved rats and the beautiful pear robe, I predict we will be seeing this horse repeatedly. Did we catch it's name?

And what I really came here to say: Thank you for the recap! I keep having other things going on while I'm watching so I miss things, and you all have kept me informed and entertained.

Paloma looked so pretty. I loved the dress, I loved the necklace and I loved her hair down. To me, she is prettier than Elisa, and found it awkward when Paloma said aloud that she can't compete with Elisa's beauty (a few episodes back).

I agree; Elisa is pretty, but Paloma is stunningly beautiful. I'm amazed all the young gents aren't paying attention to her...is being the curandera's granddaughter that big a curse in this twisted little town?

nice list on Florencia's trust issues, Anon... so true that she is also to blame here... first she gives him too much room and now she does not want to deal with the effects of that.

Julia, I agree with you that Paloma is much prettier (natural beauty) than Elisa or Florencia. I really saw something between Gael and Paloma in that exchanged look (as brief as it was when he first saw her in the dress)... so the basis of the possibility of them ending together is there for sure.

I find it funny how Mark T. (Gael) uses the same language he used in LHDM (te idolatro, te adoro, bonita)

even though he added 'chamaca' here.

Wow, thanks Jarocha for the video clips of Mi Pecado y Cañaveral. Such a good scene I can see why they keep recycling it. And I agree with the comments on the lovely red and white scene at the stable. Beautifully shot.

I also want to add my agreement to Audrey's theory that Augusto was seeing Estefania in the dress as he marched toward Elisa and began to strike her. She must be in her late teens or early twenties right, so he wouldn't be in his right mind to snatch her away from a party even though she did sneak out to it. He and Alfonsina should get into a lucha libre ring and just bash each other into the next world. I'd buy a ticket!

Just finished watching, and ai de mí, what a lovely party. The women all looked gorgeous (although the men were kind of dorky.) Alfonsina was so elegant with her hair pulled back...I hope I clean up that good when I'm her age. Bring on the concha nacar!

I think the aftermath of the party will be LOADS more fun to watch than the party itself was...
first we have in previews Elisa telling Paloma about the kiss and possibly Paloma will tell Gael to try to get Gael to stop thinking of Elisa... which will bring the stare-off on horse scene and the arm wrestling scene... and maybe a bit of trouble for Damian at the procesadora if Gabino has anything to do with it.

I agree that Medusa will manage something to either get ToadHead to cancel the paternity test or she will manage to blackmail Inmundo into twisting the results to say Elisa is NOT Toadhead's daughter...

Anything to forget the wall from LFDD - gagg!!!

I'm glad other folks are enjoying the compositions, colors, lighting, creation of ambience, etc. from this TN. That stood out to me from the very start. This videography is pure artistry. I'm a serious amateur photographer myself, so I respond strongly to an artful presentation of images. The creators really care - you can see it in their work. It's a real pleasure after seeing a few ho-hum or garish productions.

Notice also, that they are presenting the area with the same loving care. The countryside. The fields. The beautiful traditional pueblo. We are seeing a lot of traditional Mexican dress - beautiful blouses, embroidery, etc. The Panama hats - yes - they are regional to the Yucatan (called "jipijapas"), so don't be surprised by Padre Lupe's dashing choice of head gear.

Thank you to you commenters with the artistic eyes. I have none, so when y'all point those things out it makes me appreciate the composition of the scenes so much more. I love you guys! Ahem, sorry for the outburst.

Jipijapas? That's the name for those hats? Audrey, that is a very cool name and now I can't stop saying it. Jipijapa, jipijapa, jipijapa...

Marta- sorry this is so late. I always enjoy your recaps. You take such care with the details and in this particular show it seems as if you are talking about dear friends ... which is how I'm starting to feel about most of these characters (spiders and snakes in the grass excluded)
