Una Familia Con Suerte #199-200 Mon 4/9/12 Let’s Just Finish One Wedding Before They Let the Hounds of Hell Loose

It’s good to be back with all of YOU but I keep asking when this train will finally pull into the last station. JP just told me we have about seven weeks to go. So by my calculations, that means we are here until the end of May or early June. So let’s just get over it! After all rumors are that the Lucero telenovela is in the wings.

Regroup: The joyful wedding has all but concluded when Candi spots Napoleon up in the balcony. Is he really in blue jeans? Almost as important, will she resist her urge to scream bloody murder? Well….. she assures Arnold it was nothing so on we go with the ceremony.

Alfredo discusses the possibility of growing up with his MomsAmors who would like to go on controlling his life, his choice of girlfriends and all things Mother’s want to control. She doesn’t want to be left at her worst hour by an ungrateful son. He doesn’t want to continue the co-dependency (and what the hell does moisho or mosho mean anyway? I have wondered for weeks). Alfredo leaves with determination to lead his own life and even get a job. The determination propels him out of the front door and who knows how much further.

Pancho and Rebeca give their wedding vows with great feeling and who are those darling singing guapos? I thought maybe new tenors but they sound slightly barbershop crossed with golden gospel sounds. I love the applying of the lazos by the Ana and Moni) and wow, Pablo Montero steps up in impeccable white ranchero finery to sing a love song. How can Napo compete with this? After on the steps of the cathedral, Pancho wants to climb into La Burra but Rebe holds out for her fine white convertible chariot as he tosses keys to Pepe to get La Burra safely home. Boy am I getting off easy so far tonight. Next we have cartoon pictures leading to the reception. Chela is filming with her new video camera as the couple arrives and all the family demonstrates their joy that this wedding didn’t end in a disaster (don’t let me speak too soon). But the music starts and the food looks the best on any set I’ve seen. The Cirque du Soleil folk on cloth drape ropes accompany Rebeca and Pancho as they sing catchy tunes from Phantom of the Opera. Does this count as extreme filler? Rebe begins to break glasses with her high noted song. Did she really sing that part so high? Chancho brings us back to earth with his toast then Alejandra sings the Pancho+Rebe love song.

Back at Pina’s den of tears we see Kari come in to interrupt Pina’s self-help session.

Candi is telling Chela of her hallucinations then the visit to the psychiatrist when we see fancy shoes appear and Vicente begins to yell for Candi. Napo isn’t her only nightmare.

Back at the pining of Pina she tells Kari off for encouraging Freddy to seek his independence when she most needs him in her disaster. This is the first she has found fault with the simpering Kari. They part both in a snit.

Back at the reception, Vicente demonstrates his tickets inviting him to the wedding. Chela is annoyed, but Enzo is friends and says Vice is simply a drinker (tragua, like borracho). She tests his loyalty to Pancho while the diplomat Enzo says yes, they are both my friends. Rebeca is surpised that Vice was invited but Pancho passes it off that Vice is his cousin after all.

Vice tells Candi he is living in their apartment of love. Candi corrects him that it is Enzo’s apartment. Pepe and Monica begin to dance but finish arguing over his helping Frida refurbish her precious car that was trashed. Adrian escorts Ana up to congratulate the bride and groom. They are upstaged by Vice who greets all but wants to go off to talk to Ana. Everyone is surprised. Vicente chastises her for turning Freddy in for this naco Adrien. He tells her that Freddy is suffering from her rejection and he won’t turn his back on his son. He kisses her cordially on the cheek and leaves.

Barbara is about to leave when she is swept off to dance with the announcer guy. She suddenly seems interested in staying at the party longer. The “we want cake” (queremos pastel, pastel, pastel) song begins. The cake is brought in which looks like hard boxes, then the cake is turned around by Pepe and Chacho and then after stabbing it several more times but without tasting it, Pancho gives up. The dancing begins again. The cake didn’t look very yummy. I would rather dance too.

End of hour one with no real disaster, I am looking over my shoulder as Rebe and Pancho arrive at the airport to fly off for their honeymoon. Pancho makes a silly show, a server brings them tropical coctails (I don’t get treated in airports like this).

Ana and Pepe talk about the disagreement with Moni while Moni and Chela discuss Moni’s overwhelming sense of jealousy. She seems to be channeling her mother in this paranoia but. Back to Riviera Maya, I guess this is the hotel where Pancho and Rebe have arrived for their romantic honeymoon. They enter the petal strewn room and the camera goes fuzzy against red roses. The cinematography of this rather silly story really pleases me.

Ana talks sense to Pepe about Monica’s point of view feeling left out and didn’t he actually kiss Frida? Well yes, well yes twice. Only twice, mocks Ana. How would you feel if she kissed some appealing guy twice?? A little of the truth sinks in behind those dark dreamy eyes of our ingenuous Pepe. Hmmm, he muses, that would be different? Ya, think maybe, baby? It’s otra cosa mariposa? NO, no.

Kari and Freddy discuss Pina’s disappointment that he want his own life.

Rebe Senior and Candi exercise and talk about Arnold coming across the lawn toward them. Are you carrying watermelons? quips RebSr. Seems an obtuse way to comment on the way Arnold carries himself without saying anything dreadful.

Arnold tells Rxnso heneeds a divorce right away since it is one condition Candi insists on before she will have anything more to do with him. Enzo is sympathetic but surprised.

Lupita and Luke talk to little Nayeli about the legal papers to go through to protect her since she is a minor and in the control of her parents even though her mother works all the time at her three jobs and her father hits her and the mother. Nothing happens fast when a minor is involved.

A pathetic Frida calls Pepe (lordy she really doesn’t have any other friends) to say she is sick and needs his help. She is dizzy and doesn’t know what to do. I hope she isn’t preggers or putting on something to get Pepe to rush to her side again, but I’m being cynical.

Freddy has ended up at Kari’s and she asks a penny for his thoughts in half good English. She agrees that his mother is a master at enchanting people. She insists that this is hard for his mother, the blackmailer(chantaje). But it will be better for both of them in the end. Freddy asks are you saying this because it is like this for you too? No, now a sadder, wiser Kari says no her parents hardly exist for her and she is so hungry for love and acceptance. Her mother ignored her and her father bought her happiness by giving her things and now the only thing that makes her feel a bit better is getting close to Freddy and he should love her and fill the great vacancy in her life. Seems like Kari and Frida have the grounds for a fast friendship. And the beginnings of a new club: The Needy Girls.

Pancho and Rebe walk on the beach and kiss in the beautiful sunset. Another nice piece of cinematography.

Back at the Lopez ranch, Elena and Orion announce that they are in love and even though Pancho isn’t there to approve, they want everyone to know they are leaving for the north. THE NORTH! echos the entire room.

Pancho show up at Frida’s place looking a bit worried and finds a dizzy Frida whom he wants to get to the hospital. He calls Doc Octavio to make plans to have her examined. Right then Moni calls him and he turns his phone off. She tells Chela that he turned his call off. When Chela thinks it is just off or out of range, Moni counters, NO, she can tell that he rejected the call after it rang. She calls again and he answers as he is putting Frida in the car. Clumsy and causing no end of problems later, he answers Monica and says he is at Frida’s house without another word of explanation. Looking deer in the headlights confused, I can only agree that he is a naïve animal stumbling into danger. Monica looks steaming as she hangs up on him.

Pepe finally gets through to Moni’s phone but it is Chela who listens to his whole story but does confirm that Moni is burning mad. She at least listens to how sick Frida seems and that Pepe has called Octavio for advice so now they are on their way to the hospital. Frida does look peaked in the car. Maybe she isn’t faking illness.

Elena and Orion are going to hitch or walk to the states to scare the daylights out of all the family that they will be wetbacks. But then they will go to Africa and maybe Australia, yeah Australia is a good idea. Elena is wearing better makeup and really seems much happier but not much smarter.

Doc Oc is examining Frida. He declares that she is anemic. He gets ready to prescribe a course of iron and tells her to eat foods rich in iron. Let’s hope Pepe doesn’t get all romantic about saving someone who can’t take care of herself and needs him so, unlike the well cared for Moni. Doc and Fernanda send off the kids. She grins that she likes to see him full of life and acting so capable. He is really glad he didn’t forget anything. They are a good pair and they know it.

Oh good back on the Riviera Maya. Pancho jokingly turns down water from the waiter since they are surrounded by it. They kiss while she tries to get him to focus on her eyes and not on her other obvious assets.

Pepe tells Frida that she has to eat a lot of spinach. They joke but Frida continues her inappropriate protestations of love. Pepe is her angel. Yeah, did you ever see John Travolta as Archangel Michael? Makes one think about ... well, religious experiences for one thing.

Breakfast at the homestead next morning where Candi receives a present in front of Chela and the kids. It is a video copy of Cyrano de Bergerac? Now who could have sent that?

The old troika is back together at the Avon offices. Since Pancho is away from the presidency on his honeymoon, Vicente plans to promote his love for Candi, he tells his friends what he wants. Arnold remains silent then leaves in anger leaving Enzo to explain he doesn’t understand either. Neither of them seem aware of Arnold’s quest for Candi. Arnold runs into Pina’s office and drops large tears on her desk. She is still reading her self-help manual. She at least says tell me all about it. He has been abandoned by Vicente.

The honeymooners wake up in dreamy romance.

Moni is more than annoyed next morning hearing that Frida is anemic as she and Pepe meet on the street. I’m so happy for you both, she sneers. She is on her way to a meeting with a career director and she is late. They part in a double snit. She won’t listen and he started explaining way, way too late.

Chela and Candi argue about Vicente. Candi says you forgave Pancho and she can forgive Vicente if she wants. Meanwhile, Vicente meets with the only lawyer in the family so he can push for an immediate divorce. He is determined his only path to success and happiness is to get Candi back even on her terms.

Next: Looks like Candi is all ready to give Vicente another chance and still no Napo in sight. Hmmmm, there are plenty of others who are not pleased with her choice.

This needs to be tagged and I am not getting the sign on and pass correctly. Thanks

It's tagged already! Thanks Cheryl!!

Wow Cheryl! That was fast and fun. You did luck out with the wedding reception. When did Pancho and Rebe (and the family) have time to rehearse the Phantom of the Opera number? I was impressed. Perhaps every single character will get a chance to sing by the end of this tn.

The guys singing in the church were Ana's bandmates. I didn't recognize them at first either. That's the cleanest we've seen them. (I have noticed that while Ana has has to sex/glam it up on stage, the guys get to continue being grubby.)

Pablo Montero wearing those tight white pants was a treat. As was the fact that the lovely song he sang was NOT Ave Maria.

The first cake was a fake/joke cake. Then they brought out another one that was real. At least no one got cake all over their face.

Now I have yet another place in Mex that I want to visit-- the Mayan Riviera.

Orion and Elena are going to the North Pole, by way of Alaska and then a boat from there. And then on to all there other adventures. I'm glad Elena is happy with her hippie.

I was wondering what was going to come between Chela and Enzzo (they can't be happy for the remainder of the whole tn). Now we see it's his friendship with Vince. Chela needs to understand that just because Enzzo is friends with Vince, doesn't mean he'll be pulled into Vince's schemes again.

Thanks for the tagging, CHF. By the time I got the codes right the system was stressed by too much traffic so I was about to try again.

Vivi, I loved the boys and they did look too different all cleaned up and professional looking. Does everyone on this show sing or what! They were really good. I have always been impressed with how many Mexican telenovela stars can sing and/or dance really well! Yes, it crossed my mind to feel gratitude that we were not subjected to Pablo doing Ave Maria again. HIs song was really beautiful. I think I will try to download it.

Oh and thanks for the clarification of North Pole! Does that make them ice-backs? Whew, Elena even looks prettier so happy. Orion is a mensch, hippy or not.

Thank you so much Cheryl for this great snarky recap. I really loved this episode. I loved the Phantom of the Opera number. I too wonder if that was really Rebe singing and when those glasses broke, too funny.

Loved Orion and Elena showing up for the wedding. I am glad they are very happy.

Oh, Vins won't give up. I can't beleive he sent Candy the Cyrano de Bergerac. I think it was to remind Candy of the time that they went to that restaurant he as Cyrano and her as Mata Hari lol. I think she really liked the dvd.

This is the first TN I've seen that hasn't done the Ave Maria during a wedding. Loved Pablo Montero here and the song he sang.

I never would have thought Kari was needy, but she really is. I wonder if that is why she is trying so hard to latch onto Freddy.

I'm beginning to like Frida a little. Does she have no family at all? I think Pepe should have explained what was going on. It really is his fault that Moni is mad at him and she thinks what she does.

It too agree with you Vivi about Enzzo and Chela and Enzzo's friendship with Vins. I think Chela is thinking about what happened in the beginning when Enzzo wanted their home. I thought she had let that go though.

Cheryl,

Terrific recap as usual. I enjoyed your side comments observations. "Pina’s den of tears " "A little of the truth sinks in behind those dark dreamy eyes of our ingenuous" "Elena is wearing better makeup and really seems much happier but not much smarter" were among my favorites.

I'm with you, Cheryl, in my confusion "(and what the hell does moisho or mosho mean anyway? "

There were lots of delicious looking things at that wedding -- great food, guapo singers, muscled acrobats ..... I was just very glad that the wedding actually happened with no interruption despite those Napo in jeans sightings.

Pancho & Rebe continue to be annoyingly clingy -- soulful looks, kisses & "Te amo"s but aside from that the honeymoon was lovely. Beautiful sunset.

Kari is proving very useful -- even if she is showing her own needy side. I liked her talk with Freddy whe she talked about how she uses guilt on her father just like Pina uses it on Freddy. Letting him know that the manipulator is not happy will help hmi see that standing up to Pina & breaking their co-dependency will help Pina as well as himself. It will give him the strength to stand up to Pina's masterful guilt trips.

Güera

I think that Pina's "mosho" is her weird pronunciation of "hermoso." I can't recall if she ever pronounced words normally.

Pepe is right. Pina is saying "mi amor hermoso" = mis amors ermosho

Gracias, Pepe & Vivi. I do enjoy Pina's mannerisns & way of talking --but that has been eluding me.

Güera

Thanks Cheryl. I was out of the room for the entire wedding and reception and only half-listening. I am REALLY mad that I missed Pablo Montero singing NOT Ave Maria. On the other hand I couldn't help but hear Rebeca's Phantom song and it reminded me of how Pancho and his wife sang at his first wedding reception as well. Is this commonly done in Mexico? I've never been to a wedding where the bride and groom sang. (I do remember a wedding where the maid of honor sang... drunkenly... it was not a preetty sight.)

Cheryl, I'm sorry to say the first thing I thought when Frida said she was sick was "hope she isn’t preggers" too. Yes, she really is alone... but I don't understand why. She's cute and likable. But I guess she's not going to start dating someone else as long as she can get Pepe's attention.

I thought that Rebe was really beautiful in her wedding garb,a real knock out. Her face just radiated.

I found Vins extremely annoying last night. There is fine line between being cutsy and annoying in his case.

And what was that mushroom hat that Moni was wearing in Enzo's apt?

Thank you, Cheryl! I'm glad you got a visual feast to recap. That was quite a wedding.

Pepe is being really obtuse, but I can understand why a guy who is basically good won't turn his back on Frida when she seems to have no one else. I don't understand why she has no friends. Did she just move to town? Or is she secretly awful? Maybe Pepe should help her make more friends so she won't be so dependent on him. Ana seemed to like her, and Ana has nothing much going on right now.

I was afraid Pancho was going to smash cake in Rebe's face. I'm so glad he didn't. I hate it when people do that.

I went to a wedding once where the groom fancied himself an opera singer and right in the middle of the proceedings, before the vows, he suddenly burst out a capella with some long and strange song, sung right in his bride's face. I wasn't familiar with the song but the lyrics were something like "if I were homeless and fell down on your doorstep, would you take me in?" or somesuch and etc. It was VERY odd. I looked around and nearly everyone seemed to be very focused on keeping a straight face.

I've been to other weddings where the couple or members of the wedding party or family joined in the entertainment, but nothing so theatrical as Phantom with a circus. More like just normal singing.

Does anyone know the meaning of the name Frida calls Pepe, Dartanan?

I assumed it was a reference to the character D'Artagnan in The Three Musketeers, but I could be wrong about that. I'm not sure why Frida calls Pepe that.

Thanks for your recap Cheryl. And thanks Pepe & Vivi for clarifying Pina-speak.

Add me to the list of people who were shocked Pablo Montero sang something other than Ava Maria.

Yes Chela and Enzo seem poised to fight about Vince. I hope they won't fight long.

Wow, thanks for all the clarifications. Vivi, I am always impressed with your hearing/comprehension of people speaking unknown languages like Pinaspeak. I do get most of her phrases but not those mosho and now it makes perfect sense. I have noticed that sometimes she starts out saying something intelligible then she gilds it with each repetition until it sounds quite strange. On the other hand, her rhyme schemes for Adoration are fabulous. Pepe, you are right that she rarely says anything straight.

Julia, your singing groom story is hilarious too. Sometimes life is stranger than novelas. Julie, you have been to some interesting weddings too I see.

Karen, I too hope that Chela and Enzo don't get twisted about Vicente's deviant ways. He so is not worth ruining the sweetness they are finding with each other. Conejita, Vice is not nice just now. Although his one redeeming quality is his unconditional love of Freddy Nenenene.

Guera, I think you have discovered Kari's saving grace. She can help Freddy grow up more then he can go back to Ana much improved and matured I hope.

Julia,
D'Artagnan in The Three Musketeers is what came up when I googled it. Sounds as likely an explanation as any. There are so many nicknames and slang in this TN, its hard to keep up with it all.

Cheryl:

Thanks so much for a great recap. The wedding was OTT, but I guess I expected that. Let's see, now I cannot resist doing a little fashion digression...

Rebeca's gown...Well, she is lovely and she looked beautiful in the very formal gown. I wasn't sure about the feathers though, it was a little Bjork for my taste.

The green bridemaids dresses flattered several body types and that is hard to do.

Why was Chela so underdressed for a formal cathedral wedding?

Conejita: ITA about Monita's mushroom hat? Whaaat? Did she suffer a fashion influenza in France? Also I hate her wig. Moni has beautiful green eyes but her skin color looks muddy with that bright red hair. Not flattering at all. I have been stuck with red hair my whole life but I think it is hard to move to red for some people.

Who sang the Phantom number? Is there any way to find out? That is a very hard song to sing and requires great range. It actually sounded like Mayrin's speaking voice in the lower registers.

Thanks again, Cheryl, for a fun recap.

EJ

EJ and Conejita, Moni is wearing a beret, but instead of tilting it, she is wearing it right side up. It does look weird that way. I have one and wear it tilted.

Cheryl, I don't know how you managed to turn this thing around so quickly and so brilliantly...but you did and thanks so much.

Rebe and Pancho's rendition from from "Phantom of the Opera" goes down as one of my most favorite-ever aspects of any epic novela wedding...ever. In my personal experience, at any rate. And I've been watching these shows for about 15 years. Just thinking about it again makes my eyes start watering up and I can barely maintain control here at my desk in front of everyone. I'm stifling loud guffaws. Uh-oh.

Also, Pablo Montero's lip syncing was much too obvious.

And Moni...with the French berets. Ok. Ok. We get it. You visited France.

So, what's left now...7 weeks more? Of, what?
There are still at least two or three more weddings, yes? At least?

What's left?
-Pina has to become a better person.
-Freddy has to become independent.
-Moni has to become self sufficient.
-Pepe has to mature.
-Tomas has to graduate from the police academy.
-All the youngsters have to graduate from college/university and start working.
-Chela and Enzzo's baby needs to be born.
-Chela and Enzzo need to get married.
-Vince has to become a better person.
-Napo has to be outed, and either jailed or killed for real.
-Candy will either be widowed (again), or have to get a divorce. Then she's got to figure out her love life.
-Arnold needs to bust out of the heterosexual closet and come out as straight to everyone. Then he needs to find a girlfriend.

Not to mention all the side stories and secondary characters.
-What will become of the needy girls and boys (Firda, Kari, and Ana's new pretendiente)?
-What will happen to Nayeli?
-Will Ado ever find a man?
-Will Goya ever become famous?
-Will Lambi find new love (with the Pancho's secretary)?
-Will Chacho and Sandra tie the knot?
-How will Doc Oc's declining memory progress and how will Fernanda deal with it?

Lots to cover in the next 2 months!

The lady from Mexico to whom I teach English as a second language informed me that "amorsh ermosho" is a typical way for mothers to talk to their infants (cf Freddy) and then demonstrated by talking to her baby at her side.

Cheryl, thanks for a fun recap.

What fab music at the wedding. I could watch that again.

I hate that Pepe let's Frida call his girlfriend the "frances" and him "mi amor." I'll like him better when he demands more respect from Frida about his girlfriend.

Hi ElnaJune, I loved your fashion review and was thinking of the adjective Bjork when the image of Ellen Degeneris' parody of the lovely Icelandic lady brought me to convulsions of laughter, almost funnier than Bjork herself.

Vivi, your To Do list is so helpful and so right on. We don't have a moment to lose do we!!

Anon, Thanks for the Spanish baby-talk lesson. It makes so much sense. I have heard MomsAmors talk to their little ones in babytalk so Pina just never stopped doing it to her Nenenene. He really, really needs to get his own apartment! And LIFE!

Niecie and Madelaine and all, yes I loved the wedding: every gaudy moment of it. Did Pablo really lipsink? I was hoping he was really singing in the cathedral but I guess the sound was too perfect with no echos. hmmm?

And another thing, Pepe really does need to man up to Frida's not so subtle seduction tactics. Moni is right to be outraged, she can't monitor what Frida will try to do under the hood so to speak.

Hmmm...didn't see the show. Had a meeting last night. Sounds like I missed a dynamite wedding.

But delighted to know how to do some baby talk in Spanish. Good stuff.

Hope to get back in the flow eventually.

In the meantime, thanks again for an excellent recap, Cheryl, and all the interesting comments everybody!

Niecie, on Friday Pepe did tell Frida to be more respectful about his girfriend. I guess it didn't "take"!

Thanks for stopping by Judy! It is always a pleasure to hear your perspective on these stories.

Whew! I just caught up on all the recaps and episodes (lots of FF>>) that I haven't seen since last Tuesday. Terrific recap Cheryl. I savored every word. Your editorial comments always make me laugh, but I think your crack about John Travolta being Archangel Michael was the funniest.

I was glad no disaster befell the wedding. My, wasn't that reception amazing? Great food, dancing, original entertainment, they had it all.

Thanks Cheryl!

Any idea what hotel was used for the honeymoon?
