Una Familia Con Suerte #211-212 Tue 4/17/12 Get out your gowns and scrubs, it's a hospital episode!

We get a busy intro, mostly focused on the hospital, where Doc Oc rehashes the details of the transplant and lets them know that Lupita is compatible. Frida has a little tiff with Monica, and Freddy shoots some evil eyes at Ana's other guy. Pancho is extremely upset and Rebe, stuck at home with a mega-belly, emotes and asks her friend to bring her chocolate. Pancho really has a cow.

Vicente has ALREADY found new love, in the form of the juicy tax auditor. He joyfully takes the good news to Enzo and Arnold, who try to hose down his parade-float.

Meanwhile, IRS barbie is explaining to her friend how disgusting Vins was when he looked at her, drooling.

Chela is still whining about her milk.

Monica takes Pepe out for some stale hospital coffee and tells him she loves him too much to let him go.

The writers continue to milk this kidney thing for all it's worth (maybe it was this show's turn to use the certainly-very-busy hospital set), and a stream of family members engage in tearful scenes. It goes on for over 10 minutes. Maybe she's going to die... this is really OTT with the teary closeups and intense music.

While the Lopez sob at the hospital, Vins flirts with IRS barbie and her buddy. They know he's married but decide to play a trick on him. They giggle loudly and speak invitingly so Candi will overhear them (which gets her suspicious), but barbie's got something else up her sleeve. Vins knows he's beat and cancels his dinner with them so he can go lie to Candi. She buys it. I wonder where this is headed (and how long it'll take Candi to find out he hasn't changed)?

IRS barbie is actually pretty sweet to Pancho. Rebe gives him an elbow in the ribs.

Now the two girls get a scene on their parallel beds, holding hands, and the writers get another crack at those teary sendoffs. Then they head to the operating room and we watch them go under anesthesia.

Frank shows up with a balloon, reveals that he was the one who told Ana she was fat, and Pancho just about busts his melon.

Frida sneaks a kiss on Pepe in plain sight of Moni. Then we get to watch the surgery! Yay! I take it back, they'll both be fine. I think.

Chacho has a chat with Pancho, where he skirts the topic of Sandra. I notice that his lollipop is drooping. Pancho presses him, and he reveals that his dingle doesn't tingle. That's an interesting wrinkle.

Pina has a chat with auditor-barbie: Pina is very cute and warns her about Vins.

Now it's Arnie's turn. He brings in his statements and proceeds to flirt pretty heavy with the auditor's friend, who knows he's supposed to be gay....

Doc Oc comes out with the news, looking a little grim. The music is severe. We cut to commercials, which I find odd because I thought they were gonna close out the show on that cliffhanger. After a little bit of helpful news about McDonalds and stuff, it turns out the operation went fine. Talk about anticlimactic. The first person Pancho calls? auditor barbie!

Enzo lets Vins know that he's been offered the presidency of an "important telcom company in Monterrey," and Vins tries to talk him out of it.

They all rush in to see Ana, but no one wheels in Lupita. It turns out Doc Oc was not entirely truthful. Lupita's got some kind of blood-clot and is not well. Maybe he forgot because of his Alzheimer's. Pancho sobs. Everyone is sad. I can barely handle this stuff. The docs wheel her out into the hall and she's feeling better. They move her into the bed next to Ana.

Now we get a stream of well-wishers one at a time into the hospital room.

Frida is really catty with Monica, and lets her know that she didn't sleep in the chair that night long ago. Really?

Chela doesn't want Enzo to take the job, but tries not to be so obvious about it.

Now we get the first bit of something new - Candi has straightened her hair and dressed as a schoolgirl to try and keep Vins interested. Interesting...

And yay, it's over!

Ezra you are so funny. Loved your recap. I am sooo glad Lupe and Ana made it thru that surgery ok.

Vins will never change. Poor Candy one bad guy to another.

Can't stand Frida. She needs to find someone else. I don't think Moni is giving up Pepe anytime soon.

Looks like Bella has it bad for Pancho. Loved how Rebe grabbed her hand to shake. lol.

Cheryl-loved your hilarious recap yesterday. I was unable to comment but wanted to let you know.

Vivi you asked a question yesterday about breast milk. It can dry up if you are under stress and it can come back just as suddenly. When I had my daughter, I had too much and my roommate had some after having her son, and then it dried up. It never came back for her. I had to take pills to dry mine up. I was active duty military and at the time they frowned on breast pumps. Hope this answers your question.

Ezra thanks for getting another medical night up on the boards so quickly. I am always so emotionally drained on Tuesday that I truly look forward to your straight forward quips. It helps us realize that you can boil down the two hours into very little advances or revelations most nights. I thought this was one of the best written telenovelas in the beginning but now I see that to make it so long they padded the later half or last third with ridiculous filler.

Thanks for the acknowledgement Madelaine for Monday. Also I appreciate your information on the possibility of Chela's experience being realistic and especially sharing your personal experience.

Your point about Frida echos mine. I can't even look at her any more and she is a really pretty woman but I hate the super needy, devisive tactics she is practicing. She is smart enough to realize the Lopez family is totally traumatized and there is really no room for a clinger that only takes and is not giving. I realize she wants to give what she has in mind Pepe needs but please let her step back and see what she is doing. She should have not hung in that waiting room, there was no place for her except to take and take. Pepe may be weak but he is trying to be a support to his sisters, father while he reclaims the true love of his life, his Moni. I just hope they end this futile blind quest of Frida's soon. Someone should hand her bus or taxi money and slam the door shut behind her.

Good episode in many ways. I've always heard the producer of this show say that ihe show's purpose is to promote family and family values to the Mexican family. They're doing that. Some of the stories are a bit over the edge, and others show what happens with family unity.

One point to clarify. When Octavio came out and said that the surgery went well, he was being truthful at the time. Things would continue to be fine unless there were any complications. He didn't forget anything at the time. Lupita had some complications and that's where her trouble began. So, that was actually realistic enough.

Oh...one more thing. Yesterday, someone asked about Pancho's secretary's name (who just happens to be Lamberto's love interest). Her name is Enriqueta, and folks call her Queta or Quetita for short.

Don't give up on the last part of this show, as things get interesting, along with some new permanent characters. Maribel Guardia is not one of them.

Ezra, you touch on this in your recap,
Why is Doc Oc, with early onset alzheimers, in the operating room. I hope he didn't actually do the operation.

Plus, I saw some of the show last night, I always thought the kidneys were on the back, not the front of the body......hmmm.

Those girls are lucky to be alive.

P.S. Julie looks like my Poncho predictions are growing legs

Ezra- Thanks for giving us this breezy version of the hospital happenings last night. So glad both girls are now fine.

Madelaine- Thank you so much for clarifying the breast milk thing. I have wondered about this since Sortilegio when this happened to the protagonist, although she still kept her baby clutched to her most times. And that show actually showed her breastfeeding, breasts and all (I'm sure it was the real mom of the baby), but the the U.S. censor felt the need to blur the part of the boob we could see. Didn't Chela in a final scene with Enzo in the bedroom say it looks like her milk is coming back? Maybe I'm imagining it.

JP- Thanks for the clarifications. Yes, I see how this show is about family values (Mexican style).

Vince interrupted a near kiss between Quetita and Lambi. Boo!

I am also annoyed with Frida. I don't think she ever went home, and yet she served NO purpose. In fact, she tried multiple times to pick fights with Moni. I'm glad Moni didn't take the bait. Even if Moni weren't there for Pepe, she still had more right to be there since she is friends with Ana, and actually part of the family now. Frida never had a right to be pouty about Moni's presence, and she needs to drop the "Frenchy" thing. I'm annoyed at Pepe for not telling her to knock it off each time she says it. I was glad to see Moni ask Pepe directly, and calmly, if more happened with Frida. I notice that she didn't rat Frida out by saying she lied to her about it.

Candy is really in for some major heartbreak. She is doing exactly what Pina did-- trying to keep Vince interested with dress up. It was Candy's suggestion to Pina, so she should know that the same woman dressed in a costume and some role play, does not equal the excitement of a new woman for Vince.

I was also happy to see Pancho give Frank a near beatdown for being the one who helped get this eating disorder ball rolling. Now maybe he'll be more careful about what he says to the next starlette he manages.

This was one of your best, Ezra. Love your quips, breezy style and young guy vocabulary.

Ezra, thanks for snappy, to the point condensed recap.

Does anyone know the actress's name that plays Isabella Ruiz?

I wanted to strangle the Lopez zoo in the recovery room with Ana, talking about Lupita's dire condition. Does anyone in that group have a brain?

Best thing for Chela and Enzo's marriage would be for them to move away and force Chela to cut the Lopez cord.

Loved Pancho's reaction to Chucho's "dingle that doesn't tingle". His droppy head gave me a really good laugh.

Vivi-you didn't imagine it. Chela's milk did come back. She was worried about bottle feeding cause she feels the baby wouldn't be getting the immunity protection breast milk gives. I hope she goes with Enzzo to Monterry.

I agree with you all about Frida. She is really pushing it. I think she was trying to imitate Moni, but she is way too pushy. I hate the way she calls Moni "Frenchy" and Pepe Dartagnon and she keeps Mi Amoring him. He needs to tell her they are just friends and nothing more. I wonder if that will get thru her thick skull.

I agree with you Vivi about Frank. I am glad Pancho gave him a beatdown, he so deserved it.

Conejita, JP told us above the name Maribel Guardia. She is playing Isabella. I did google search and the pictures all had less makeup but mostly very little clothing!

Cheryl,
I saw the name Maribel Guardia above but he didn't include Isabella so I didn't have a clue who it was. Too early in the day I guess! Thanks for the heads up. To me she is not very attractive at all but I guess she is to the drooling Arnold, Vins, Pancho.........

I just looked up Maribel Guardia too. In addition to the skimpy outfits she poses in and sings/performs in, I was most surprised to see that she is 52 years old! I know there are some surgical enhancements going on, but I still have to say she looks damn good. More power to her.

From what I can tell, she has been a sex symbol in Mexico and Central America (she's from Costa Rica) for many decades. It's like Heather Locklear being a guest star on a show. Someone from another culture and time may see that she's a relatively attractive "older" woman, but wouldn't get the hooplah. But if you are an American man of a certain age, then all you see is that sex symbol you have fantasized about since you were a boy, and she was in T.J. Hooker. I bet any show she'd appear in would have every male character drooling after her.

You guys bring up some interesting points that I had to ponder.

You are right. Maribel Guardia has definitely been considered almost a sex symbol for many years in Mexico and Latin America. She’s definitely known in the US as well, but her looks and beauty have always been something folks talk about. I believe that was a subtle reason they introduced this character and storyline to this show. That and the fact that the producer wanted her to make an appearance on the show.
So, it didn’t surprise me that the guys would druel and be captivated by her; although, some show it more than others. I’d be somewhere in the middle…not drueling too hard but still captivated! Seriously though, this is in a way, part of the comedy, if we know her status symbol in Mexico, then we know what to expect.
Heather L? Absolutely!! Great comparison. TO me, she still is quite attractive.

Some of you mentioned the possibility of Enzo and clan moving and how good that would be. As an American, I agree. However, keep in mind that when watching the show, we should be looking at things through a traditional and somewhat old fashion Mexican family living in the 21st century, where large and extended families still count for a lot, especially when raised with old fashion traditional family values. It’s different from what we see here. In America, everyone would have moved out, gone to college, and made their own lives and only kept in touch with the parents. Here, it is rare or unheard of for them not to have at least one meal together and for them to move out before they’re really ready. So, the aunt still means a lot in this family. All the new cousins need to grow up together and make the new generation...right?

Thanks, Ezra. I didn't get to see this but cracked up at "Chacho's lollipop is drooping." Poor guy!

I knew I had had enough of Frida for sure on Monday night when she seemed really surprised that Pepe wanted to offer one of his kidneys. I realize she's had a tough life and obviously doesn't have much experience with people going out of their way for one another, but can't she imagine what it would be like for Pepe to lose his sister if he could do something to stop it?

Speaking of which, I'll be upset if Lupita doesn't have a full recovery. Although, Ana is really the one who's still in danger, because her body can still reject the kidney (I don't know much about this stuff but I'm pretty sure it's a long-term concern and you have to take special medication to prevent it?).

I'm really surprised that Enzo is considering taking that presidency in Monterrey. That offer came from out of nowhere; the guy who approached him is merely a headhunter. No one at the company has met with Enzo or even spoken to him.

Considering that this is that guy's second effort to get a company officer out of Avon, it seems quite suspicious. If I were Enzo, I would have that guy investigated to find out if someone is putting him up to it.

Julie

Thanks, Ezra!

Yay, looks like Lupita is going to make it. I liked the scene near the end where she covered her eyes to give Ana and Freddie some privacy. And then Ana didn't QUITE extend the same courtesy when Tom visited.

Speaking of our reformed Tomcat, what is with those big clunky boots he's wearing with his new suit luke? Is that the thing now?

Frida needs a good swift smack upside the head. What a pill. The whole family has more than enough stress and worry already, and she hangs around for two days just to cause more problems? Egad. It was one thing to let Pepe know she was interested when she thought he and Moni were on the outs, but this is going WAY too far. Pepe needs to put his foot down, and not inside her hovel.

Julie, good points about the headhunter. In real life it is not at all uncommon to be approached by headhunters out of the blue, but in telenovelaland everything is suspicious. I would think Enzo is still just deciding whether he even wants to go meet with the telecom people.

Thanks for the recap Ezra. As others have noted you were succinct and funny; what a plus.

Though Chela does need boundaries, she was practically the mother to the kids after her sister died. For her to just cut the cord is almost impossible.

Thanks JP and Vivi for your info.

ITA about Frida. Pepe is the one who needs to stop this foolishness (and as Madelaine noted it may not stop Frida).

Ezra, loved the way you zipped through it all.

Pepe used to be so decisive, now he's a big wuss. Wonder what it will take for him to snap out of it.

Vivi and JPcruzer, thanks for the background info on IRS barbie. Helps me get this storyline better.

I'm sure Pancho won't stray, but a will-he-cheat? storyline is better than seeing an endless rounds of his full blow-out crying.

I am really enjoying this cultural discussion. Its a real help in understanding the characters.

And Karen you are so right, Chela is essentially a Lopez and it will be nearly impossible for her just focus on her own little family. In addition this family is in everyone elses business. No secrets or privacy with this bunch.

i was proud of Enzo for telling Chela right away about this big offer and that he is thinking about it. Even if he doesn't take it, it is still a great honor to be sought out for a prestgious presidency.

Julia: "In real life it is not at all uncommon to be approached by headhunters out of the blue" - true, but it is suspicious when the headhunter's previous visit wasn't actually as a headhunter. That is quite odd. Maybe he'll come back a third time in yet another guise and make a play for Vince!

What's even weirder is that headhunters don't typically approach prospects at their current workplace - for LOTS of reasons. It was probably just for plot convenience, but not many companies would look favorably on that!

Julie

A headhunter called my company a few weeks ago trying to get me to apply for a job. She was like, "I sent you an e-mail and you didn't respond." Uhm...I didn't respond because I'm not looking for a new job, and why the heck are you calling me at WORK?! I was shocked and assured my boss I was not out looking for a job secretly.

Okay, my memory is fuzzy. Which scheme was the headhunter guy part of before?

He's the guy who head hunted Pancho to run for office for some local party.
