Refugio Para el Amor #82 Tue 7/31/12 The Calm Before The Storm
- Rosalena and Connie trot off to the neurologist. Rosalena for a “resonancia magnetica” (MRI) to see if there's a medical reason for her manic behavior one minute, her deep depression the next, and overall, her lack of connection with “reality”. Her cardiologist, blabbing to Connie in the waiting room, says for sure Rosa “tiene algo”. That's why he recommended more studies.
- Max enlists Oscar's help for a coverup of Rosa's misdeeds: to wit, that she gave away a newborn almost 20 years ago, and they can't let the news get out. Otherwise her reputation, the family's reputation and the firm's reputation will suffer (oh the loss in market value! oh the ire of the shareholders! oh the financial losses!) Oscar pledges his unconditional support but Oscar doesn't tell him who the real father is or let him talk to Rosalena to get more details.
- The boys are happily selling tacos de canasta, flirting with the various maids and servant girls who buy their wares. Lorenzo catches the eye of a comely lass toting a small dog named “Perdon mi Amor”, a squabble make-up gift that no longer appeals to its recipient. She tells Lorenzo to ''cambiarse con el cambio” (keep the change) and his buddy teases him about the new conquest. They also learn that dog-walking pays well. (expansion of street business for our boys?)
- Rosalena continues barring Boris from the house, in spite of his gigantic Disculpame Bouquet. No one else in the family thinks it was that bad. (but I have to tell you, if that had happened in my house when I was a teenager, MY mother would have thrown a similar fit.)
- Rod continues storming around like an idiot. Tears up his bed where he bagged Gala (or she bagged him, depending on your point of view); marches out of the office when Frick and Frack, his two office buddies tease him about Gala; slinks out of the therapy pool after hearing that Pato is highly motivated to get better so he can go see Luciana again; and sulks when Pato, at home, admonishes him for getting back into Gala's clutches. His final surly pout of the evening is when Melissa, at the family lunch, snipes that if his mom is getting checked for neurological problems, maybe HE should get his heart checked. Zinger!!!!
- Gala, after boasting of her re-conquest of Rod (see vocabulario) continues with her plan to hang out in Columbia for a few days, playing hard to get (as if!) and whetting Rodrigo's appetite. Her office assistent seems to be curling her lip the whole time she's noting down travel information.
- Padre Honesto, in true sacerdote form, gently refuses Maximeanie's request for more information on Rosalena's actions, since he must keep the Secret of the Confessional.
- Luci appears dazed and confused over the news that Licenciado Linares is actually her biological father. She sweetly refuses all offers of help, financial or otherwise : no, doesn't want him to rent her an apartment in Mexico City, doesn't even want his help arranging furniture in Paz' house, and affirms that the best thing for her is to stay in “mi tierra con mi gente”, and paint pottery like she's always done. She also faints at least once, reminding us that she's probably pregnant.
- Papa Linares (whom she still calls “licenciado”) wisely agrees to give her time and not pressure her.
- Max is still a sadistic meanie, bullying both Vicky and Aldo alike. Probably making up for the frustration he feels trying to have a real conversation with his Alternate Reality Wife Rosalena.Vicky's job continues to be in jepoardy as her boss opines that if their clients find out she's sleeping with a client's husband, they might fear for their own marriages.
- The Pueblo Gossips spread the news that Luciana is back with some spiffy gent who seems to be squiring Magda around. Procopio (Copito...cute nickname) rolls his eyes and say uh huh, uh huh, uh huh dubiously. Don Aquiles is happy that his palomita has returned but laughs at the thought that Magda might have a galan. Luchita, meanwhile, worries that Aquiles is lost to her forever. “Ay yi yi, ya' never had 'em in the first place! “sneer the metiches.

This was indeed a set up episode, or as you say, the calm before the storm. I was impressed that Max actually spent much of the episode trying to figure out how to cover Rosa's misdeeds and protect her legally.
I'm surprised that they may actually give us a medical reason for some of Rosa's problems (even if she turns out to be bi-polar or something, I still think she's also just a bitch). Villains are never given a real medical reason for for their crazy behavior. I wonder if the truth comes out about Luci, of Oscar and Max will use the medical/mental health excuse to get Rosa off? I wonder how Oscar doesn't have an ulcer with all the Torreslanda fires he's being asked to control.
Nice try Boris, but no dice. Judy, I hope that your mother would not have been so scary as Rosa. Lorenzo did wonder what his guerita (little blondie) was up to after flirting with the maid with the dog.
I hope Luci lets herself become closer to Claudio and accepts his fatherly help soon. She's really holding herself back. I wonder if she feels like she's being disloyal to Galdino?
I hope they don't go down the mental excuse road for all of Rosa's misdeeds, but it would be a first. Have they ever done that in a TN before? I agree Vivi she is a beyotch. She must have been this way for years though, cause this all started when Aurora became pregnant and gave birth. Maybe the birth was the catalyst for Rosa to totally start losing it.
I too hope that Luci lets herself get closer to Claudio. I think with some time she will. It will take her awhile to process everything that has happened to her. I would love for her and Claudio to confront that beyotch face to face. It is way past time for that already. But then again, revenge is a dish best served cold.
I didn't say it yesterday, but yay Paz!!! She may be fainting, and gasping and crying and annoying but kudos to her for being the one to tell the truth and stick to her guns. She is one strong woman when it really counts.
Loved Magda walking around with Claudio and the Chisme Ladies seeing it, lol. And Copio, who knew?? Such a stand up guy and he seems to have gotten over the slimyness from Don A. I loved his umh, and his head nodding too funny. Poor Dona Luchita, or should I say, lucky Dona Luchita? She so deserves way better than Don A.
Dead to Me is still Dead to Me. What an absolute idiot. He never realizes the results of his actions. He will never escape Gagme's clutches without a hell of a fight. So glad Pato let him have it. I want to see Dead to Me with Luci at the end, but I want Dead to Me to have some serious competiton for Luci. He needs to wake up and smell the coffee. Not only is ROD DEAD TO ME, DEAD TO ME, But he is also dead in the brain department.
Rosa is just loca. She is another one that doesn't listen to explanations, just like her son. For goodness sake nothing happened between Boris and Hanna, and I knew the flowers would do no good. Why does Frigid need to comment about the family behavior? She needs to shut it already and I really can't wait for the day she gets caught chismeing with Gala and Julie. I hope Rosa throws her out on the street like she did to Luci. Can't wait for tomorrow when Claudio informs Rosa he knows what she did, and when she did it.
We've known it for some time. But this character, who is still reeling from her whirlwind romance and divorce, is now having to completely change her vision of the world and her place in it.
As to your question, Vivi...my mom could be really scary. She wouldn't have been as cool as Rosalena. She would have ripped that Boris a new one! And me as well. She was an affectionate mom when all was going well. But if you messed up, head for the hills!
As for Roselena's mental state, I think the weight of her evil deeds has contributed to an imbalance. But if that imbalance preceded giving the baby away, or resulted from it, I have no idea. Nor am I sure what the writers intend. It'll be interesting.
Explaining crazy with medical reasons - its an interesting tactic but I'm those of you who feel that Rosa has been a witch for a while. "Giving" away Luci may have made her turn an important corner but I think she made that decision as a sane person and trying to cover it up may have made her crazy.
I loved Oscar's reaction. He got more stressed the more Max told him. He'll be very shocked to realize the baby is Luci and horrified to learn that Claudio is the father.
Based on the preview, I want to see Claudio become a lion and attack Don A. You know he knows that man is up to no good and is messing w/his hija.
Can't wait for tomorrow! Does anyone else wonder if Paz and Claudio will become more than friends?
Sp dumbs tosses around the bedding in his place after the skank slid out, he should just burn it or better yet move out and let the building supe fumigate the place.
Poor Oscar is destined to have many more WTH moments as the true story of Rosa's misdeeds come out and unfortunately he will be another person to be disillusioned when he finds out that Conny knew. The fall out from La Loca's paranoia continues to spread.
It's understandable to me that Luci is reluctant to even think about going back to the DF with her newfound father. The poor thing has had one hell of a couple of months, a marriage, an vile attack by a coven of witches, a divorce, a revelation that her whole life is lie. But I hope she stops hiding away and wishing none of it had happened.
I'm sick of the Het Het gossips but on the other hand since they got the word back to Don Asshat that his palomita is back in town and sans hubby maybe they are going to be the driving force that sends Luci back to the DF. I really hated him snickering about the idea that Magda has a galan. PIG. Can't wait to see what happens when he has to deal with Claudio. With any luck Paz or Magda will tell him what the creep did which sent Luci the DF in the first place.
Gala is over confident in her charms in the sack but I will give her a point for having the brains to actually go to Colombia in case Rod (I know he'll call me) actually thinks to check out her story. He's actually too dumb but she is covering her bases.
Poor Max now he is the boy trying to plug the dyke after Rosa's craziness. He really should consider having her committed to the TN manicomio.
@Karen...I too would love to see Linares, Papa Linares, put Don Aquiles in his place. He's already done so legally, by getting Paz' house back, but now he needs to get him to back off permanently from Luciana. Let the face-off begin! Paz and Linares, dunno? There's always the Melissa factor also. Hmmmm
@Anna...I'm with you that the acting has been truly amazing in this one. Paz, Linares, Roselena have all been riveting. I have seen the actor who plays Linares in a lot of minor roles. But he's doing a great job now in a bigger number. And the woman playing Paz has been incredible in the last few episodes. And becoming more beautiful in the process.
Just the fact that the folks at the Het Het are getting along, though things are weird still and that is realistic, is so nice to see. No wailing and gnashing of teeth going on for days. So refreshing. And of course, little Cupid shows up as things get awkward and gets everyone smiling and talking again.
Normally I can take a good abs viewing scene, but Rod acting like a tweeb while that is happening is sooo NOT appealling. They could cut the moping scenes too and I'd be okay with that.
I was surprised at the move to try and make Rosa's antics part of a bigger neurlogical problem. I do wonder about all those meds that sit at her bedside already (what are those--did I miss something)? But a diagnosis of manic depressive, bi-polar, paranoia something along those lines would explain the highs and lows and refusal to accept reality. Would be stunned if she goes the murderous route and the mental illness would be used to explain that...that is really a game changer in plots.
If Gala disappears for a few days, she is taking her mother with her? Please. Get that woman off my screen for a few days!
I'm with you on Gala and Julie...they're both like chalk screeching on a blackboard for me. But I doubt if they're going to disappear. Alas, the villains never do!
Was that Popeye the maid was holding? I hate the idea that she doesn't love such an adorable pooch; little dogs are so endearing. Perhaps one of the guys will take him off her hands. However, if Boris takes him to give to Jana that would be a death sentence for the dog because of Rosalena.
"Desculpame bouquet", "alternate reality wife", "a squabble make-up gift that no longer appeals to its recipient" and "Same gossip, same unquenched desires and longings" were a few of my favorites. However, I love that you also incorporate fabulous English words as well: "cataclysmic" and "tumultuous". Most excellent!
Vivi, I tend to agree with you (as I laugh) regarding Rosa: "(even if she turns out to be bi-polar or something, I still think she's also just a bitch)."
Perhaps I'm alone, but I thought Boris' flowers were a nice gesture. Is there ever a situation with Rosa where it's not a lose/lose deal?
Madelaine, I also think Copio is cute as a button. Love that he has grown and is certainly happier now that he has escaped being under Don A's thumb.
Rod's becoming the poster boy for bad behavior and poor decisions. When he pretended to be asleep while Gala was gloating, I thought what a coward! He certainly had no issue in ripping Luci's heart out for transgressions she didn't commit, but he is too guilty and afraid to tell Gala he made a mistake and that they have no future! His atonement list is growing longer daily.
Luci and Claudio's relationship began with friendship and will develop into a loving father/daughter one in due time. I cannot wait to see how he handles Don A. There was a glean in Claudio's eye as Don burst in, blustering and yammering!
Thanks again Judy. This was amazing.
Diana
Rod IS the poster boy for bad behavior and poor decisions, as you noted.
Still, I felt his reaction was quite realistic. Women want to talk things out and get things clear. Guys just want to get the he** out if they've changed their mind after a roll in the hay.
Our Rod is definitely "from Mars". Emotionally, he's functioning on a pretty primitive level. Right now he's still a cave man, as some of our commenters have noted. Presumeably our gentle (but also tough!)Luciana will civilize him to some extent...in time!
And if it's Popeye, well, glad the little guy is still working on a regular basis. Ordinarily, dogs in Mexico do not have a good life. I'm supposing that Popeye lives pretty well.
The bouquet was lovely, Frigida and Roselena's responses were ugly and cold. Right in line with their characters.
Anita, you might need these words for your recap tonight:
relamido (slimey/drooler)
villa-polainas (villa-horse reigns?)
judy, awesome recap! my fav line:
Rod continues storming around like an idiot. Tears up his bed where he bagged Gala (or she bagged him, depending on your point of view);
Such a clever way to summarize how Rod etched a sign of 'LOSER' on his forehead tonight, and he can't see it even when Patricio points at it for him...
on to read comments...
Anna, yes there has been some speculation about a Claudio/Paz pairing.
DimRod is really becoming cartoonish with his pouty faces and acting out. Worse it gets, harder to see him back with Luci.
Rosa, she did have those killer headaches early on. Maybe there is some neurological explanation? except that she was loca back as long as 20 years. Slow-growing tumor? or just mean.
Luci, understand her hesitancy. Paz really hit her over the head with it when she'd just woken up, first morning back in her tierra after fracaso with Rod.
Luci's generous spirit will be shining through soon.
Julie, that gal really enjoys her "champan."
Clara
and totally agree that Luciana is showing her 'sudden feeling of lost'. suddenly her world has been re-written/re-ordered... and she does not want to let go of the world she knew up until now (her ah-Pa and her ah-Ma)... it certainly is unsettling to say the least, beside now seeing a total stranger and having to think of him as her actual father... she needs some time, but she is so strong spiritually and emotionally after the big blow she just had to handle from Rod, that she will come out of it faster than anyone expects... and in the end it will make her even stronger... I really would love for Patricio to get the girl in the end, because he has been the one acting consistently as the one that deserves to get such a prize in the end.
Rosa the B should rot in hell, which is what she fears the most.
These past few weeks have been really hard to watch with Rod slinking further & further into 'Jerkville'. However, I feel (hope) that this is where we will start seeing the turning & changing of is ways. I think he realizes what he has lost and that will mature him. Again, I am hoping. He cannot be with Luci in his current state.
And gee, is Pato giving it to Rod or what? Awkward....
As for Luci, her reaction and emotional response towards Claudio was as I thought it would be in real life. I mean seriously, as if she were going to cuddle up and call him daddy right away. The relationship will build into a father/daughter over the next few weeks, I am certain. I cried for Paz. As a mother, I could really feel her peace of mind coming through the TV!
Ah Rosa... only a well placed brain tumor could excuse your crazy. That being said, such a tumor would have killed you long ago and can not be used as an excuse for what you did 19 years ago. Good luck with that....
@Clara...Julie and her "champan"...yesss, she seems to want to celebrate every niggling, mean-spirited triumph with a glass of bubbly. Party girl going to seed and desperately in need of income.
@Nolegirl...Welcome. Have you commented before? Anyway, like you, my favorite scene was Pato quietly sticking it to Rod. And he certainly found his mark! Second favorite was Melissa's follow-up jab. As for brain tumors, you're right, an actual tumor would have taken out Rosalena at least 10 years ago if not earlier. We'll have to chalk up her actions to a destiny of evil.
This is my first ever TN - I don't even speak Spanish. I went on a business trip and when I got home, but Mother in law had gotten my husband hooked and now we watch every night. He translated each episode for me until we fianlly got subtitles turned on. I was amazed at how I could follow so easily without understanding 90% of the words. I now understand how silent movies could be enjoyable.
Sadly, watching with my husband I have to act like 'Rod in Towel' scenes aren't big deal.
They say that communication is at least 75% facial expressions and tone of voice (that's why babies and pets understand us very well!)so I'm not surprised you've been following the action even without your hubby's translations. I think Gringo is in the same boat, but he "gets" it without knowing Spanish.
Laughing about hiding your reaction to our Rod in a towel. I get a little edgy when my husband walks through the room where I'm watching. Who knows what I might be drooling over!?
Pato thinks things through. Knowing the kind of girl Luci is he reasoned that she could not have been guilty of lying and bad behavior.
Rod doesn't think he just reacts and not wisely. Faced with the scene in the torture chamber otherwise known as the library he immediately went with the accusers, never thought to give Luci more than a second to defend herself. He sees Claudio and Luci in the car and immediately reacts mentally accusing her of having an affair with the other man. At some level he knew Rosa's dinner party was a set up and his reaction was to go with the flow, not to challenge her and take a hike. Pouting after thinking bad things about Claudio going off to Het Het with Luci and when Gagme slithers all over him does he think this is wrong? No he rushes off to have revenge sex. Idiot. Can not wait to see how he reacts when the discovers the truth about Luci and his sainted mother.
Poor Boris. First he gets castrated in the library and now he is banned to Siberia. The flowers were a lovely gesture and unnecessary since he had done nothing wrong but the boy like the kids from Het Het has obviously been raised right. Poor Jana how is she ever going to explain to him that her mother is just nuts.
I'm sorry Boris was so severely chastised but clearly this is paving the way for our charming Lorenzo, so let the games begin.
Thanks again Judy.
Olive
Gala is supremely over-confident. Can't think why. But given that this TN has a ways to go, I've got to imagine that she'll SEEM to win for a while. Dread those capitulos, I can tell you!
Great! Great! Elvira. Yes, Rod is a modern day cave man.
NoleGirl--I'm sure that a lot of us out here don't understand Spanish, I'm one of them but I have found these novelas to be so good that I can't stay away from them. This one, is one of the best I have seen so far.
Olive--Great comment.
Luci has been through a lot in a very short time. I hope that the sun's warmth and brightness comes to her soon. It has already begun and I hope that It continues in a big way.----NimRod you big cave man jerk, you need to suffer a little more.
the gringo
agree with everyone else about the face off between lineras & donA, can't wait to see lineras get all papa mode on him. I'm also glad that they are showing luci still adjusting to the truth, and didn't just have her rush into her dad's arms. good job writers.
anybody else liking how they're handling the medical aspect of the tn? I'm no expert but im not bending over backwards to have to accept what they say as truth. They're actually trying to find neurological reasons behind rosa's behavior & not just saying que esta mal and leaving it at that (dont think they would accept BSC as a medical disorder). also like how we still get occasional updates on pato's progress.
jlk
But maybe Rod could endorse a brand of tequila? Juli could shill for Oil of Olay. Valentina for some brand of cookie that they keep feeding her when she gets all truthy with Gala. Rosalena and prozac. So many opportunities but I'm still glad the effort is going towards Pato for now.
kelly
@Nolegirl...glad your hubster looks good in a towel. Mine did about 45 years ago. 'Course I looked better then too.
@Gringo...I'm SURE Rod will suffer some more...lots more. Unfortunately that means our dear Luciana will suffer as well. Because in spite of everything, she loves and misses him terribly.
@jlk....yes, so far the medical issues have been handled realistically and also, people's behavior seems believable given the way they're "wired". Some of our basic reactions to life do come pre-wired, and that is why I'm not sure how realistically Rod will change. But one can hope.
@Kelly...I have really enjoyed the focus on the rehabilitation efforts. At one time, I wanted to be a physical therapist and volunteered in the summer at a Children's Hospital. It takes an incredible amount of time to make the tiniest bit of progress, and I've like how it's taken Pato quite a bit of time just to move a finger. Pretty darn realistic compared to the miracle recoveries we've seen in a lot of these.
Again, thank you all for your lively and interesting comments today. This is a great group!
Hope this can get resolved in 20 min.
Meanwhile, I can send on my appreciation for Judy who has joined the recappers convention lately. You're doing a splendid job of starting in the middle of this story. Glad you have found it worthwhile. It is one of the smartest written and acted tns to come along in quite a while. There's little room to snark at any of the characters.
Anita
Loved your remark about your mom. I had to laugh, in my day we would never have brought a guy in to our bedroom. That doesn't mean we wouldn't be out making out in his car in the driveway while our parents would flick the porch light.
Decie Girl...you're a veteran of many telenovelas. Glad you're enjoying this one so much. It was a welcome surprise to me. I hadn't intended to watch it.
