Abismo de pasión #136 9/24/12: Who Are You And What Have You Done With Our Gael

Recap by Cathyx

Cantina: ʻNobody knows the troubles Iʼve seen, nobody knows my sorrow...ʼ sings Gael into his tequila. Gab hears him and joins in. But Gael doesnʼt want to sing a duet and tells him to leave. He will, but not before he gives a gun to Gael and tells him to off his former friend. Gael says he wants to do it with his bare hands and gives him back the gun. Gab continues to taunt him and Gael responds by slugging him. First Gael has the upper hand, throwing a strong right hook, then slams his head into the bar.(thatʼs gotta hurt when you have a bullet in your head) But look out, Gab will not be outdone. He didnʼt bury a woman alive in a hospital gown the same day he gained consciousness by being a weak man. He turns around and does the 3 Stooges Headbutt, only to have the younger Gael waver for just a moment before he returns the favor with 3 more rights followed my 4 more. If Gabinoʼs head hurt before, it must be on fire about now.

Dam is helping Alf into bed and she tells him she will see Doc at his office tomorrow. (How he can even be civil to her after knowing what she has done is beyond me) She goes on about how awful Elisa blah blah blah. Dam tells her again that she shouldnʼt be responsible for what her mother did, blah, blah, blah. Time filler...

Lucio, Lola and Elisa are eating dinner and talking about visiting the graves tomorrow. More time filler talk about missing the dead and taking care of the graves. Elisa cries. They agree to go visit the cemetery.

Paloma is rubbing her real baby bump when Ramona asks Paloma if sheʼs heard anything of Elisa and Dam. She tells her they are back in La Ermita. Elisa came back more in love than ever, but something happened and sheʼs really mad at Dam because he continues to doubt her love for him. Ramona adds that Gael getting in the middle of that wonʼt help and will only end badly. Paloma thinks that Gael doesnʼt deserve Elisa and Ramona says that he doesnʼt deserve Paloma either. She tells Ramona that Elisa confessed to Gael that she betrayed him, but he never told Elisa that he did the same to her. Ramona tells Paloma that she needs to tell Elisa about the betrayal before they leave or at least to pressure Gael to tell Elisa about it but Paloma wonʼt.

Padre gets a call that Gael is in jail.

Elisa, Lucio and Lola are at the cemetery at Blancaʼs grave and are sad. Lucio wants to go home. Elisa stays to visit Augustoʼs and Estefaniaʼs graves. **ALERT ALERT** Horacio Sighting Straight Ahead We see Horacio in the background watching Elisa as she stands by Blancaʼs grave.

Back at the pokey, this person who looks like Gael but we no longer recognize and Gabino are staring at each other across the cells. Gabino gets sprung but the Gael lookalike has to stay.

Paloma stops by the rectory to see Gael but Padre tells her he isnʼt in. He asks her if she is there to tell Gael that sheʼs having his baby. No, only to tell him to leave Damian alone. Padre tries again to get Paloma to confess, but she wonʼt hear of it. Padre tells her that Gael is in the gaol. (hahaha)

Back at the cemetery, Elisa is filling time talking to Augustoʼs grave about her woes. She cries, of course. She walks to Estefaniaʼs grave and promises justice. Horacio is overhearing this which lets us know that he will intervene and help her out with these issues.

Damian comes down for breakfast and Antonia asks what the thugs are doing in the front yard. Is it for your protection? Dam tells her not to worry, he isnʼt afraid. She tells him about the Gael lookalike showing up and threatening to kill him. Dam leaves to find him.

We go back to 1980 and Flo is typing on typewriter. She only has cocktail dresses to wear until she can save up enough money to buy a more appropriate dress for working as a receptionist in a doctorʼs office. Paloma arrives and is so glad that she now has an assistant so she can take time off from work guilt free for leaving Doc stranded. Paloma leaves to visit Gael in jail.

Ramona runs into Elisa at the grave. More episode time filler conversation about Elisaʼs mom. Then the topic switches to Elisa and all her problems. Ramona cryptically tells Elisa that Gael betrayed her too and if Elisa were halfway on the ball, she would figure it out. Needless to say, she doesnʼt. Ramona tells her that she and Paloma are leaving town because of Gael and wonʼt return. Elisa has no idea what sheʼs talking about. Ugh!

Now Damian arrives at the rectory spitting tacks and looking to have it out with Gael. Padre tells him to calm down. After what Dam did to Gael, of course heʼs going to be mad. Dam says (And I canʼt believe anyone can be this obtuse) that he didnʼt look at it as robbing Gael of anything, Damian was only taking what was rightfully his. (Yeah, heʼs that Damselfish and self centered) Padre tells Damian to not be so hasty, take it slow and think about what he will do and that Gael is in jail for fighting.

Paloma visits the Gael lookalike. Finally some conversation that isnʼt an episode filler. She pleads with him to not do anything crazy and that Elisa and Damian love each other
like there is no tomorrow. Gael lookalike says that heʼs mad that Elisa betrayed him. Paloma reminds him that he has some nerve saying that because she has a first hand account of him betraying Elisa about a month ago. Gael lookalike takes no responsibility for that. She came on to him and little Gael (thanks Cynderella) couldnʼt say no.

Alfonsina arrives to see Doc for her appointment. She is shocked to see Flo sitting at the reception desk taking a message.(Can someone give her some phonebooks to sit on so we can see her over that massive typewriter?) They settle why they are both there and Alf is actually going to wait there until Doc is free instead of barging into his office. Alf tells Flo that she hopes her son finds a good woman after all that has happened. Just then Elisa walks in. This ought to be good. Flo says that he did find a good woman and hands Elisa her engagement ring.

Paloma is finally seeing that the Gael lookalike is actually the real New Awful Gael now. She tells him that the only reason she came on to him was because she loved him and wanted him to know it before he marries. He starts in on some real ugly talk. New Awful Gael tells her that he never loved her and never will. He has only loved one woman and only will continue to love only one woman and that woman isnʼt Paloma. Paloma finally, finally gets it that the woman heʼs talking about isnʼt her. Itʼs Elisa. Finally.

Back at Docʼs office, Alf wants the ring back. She pulls out a beautiful fan that she most likely borrowed from Urban Anthropologist for this scene, and starts fluttering it ferociously. Elisa gives the ring back and says that if she and Dam were to marry, she wants a new ring, not some ugly old used one like that one. Alf accuses them of conspiring against her. Flo tells her that they didnʼt conspire, and although Flo wasnʼt the perfect DIL and committed a lot of errors, Alf wasnʼt a good mother either. She accuses Alf of saying she would do anything for her son, but all she did was cause damage for him. Alf just needs to leave Dam and Elisa alone to live their own lives. Now the fan is fluttering so fast that I think it will break apart.

Dam visits Lucio. Lucio play acts being mad at Damian for what he did, but heʼs not very believable. He gives Dam some advice on how to conquer Elisa. Conversation filler ensues. Damstoopid still thinks that Elisa loves Gael.

Elisa asks what Flo is doing working there and where Paloma is. She needs to talk with her. Elisa tells Flo that she read her letter to Damian. Then they fill time by swapping sob stories and Flo reminds Elisa that she isnʼt alone because she has Damian. Elisa doesnʼt want to hear that and leaves.

Padre finally sees New Awful Gael. Gael says he needs to get out to settle the score with Dam. Dam has to pay for what he did. Padre wants to know what happened to the old Gael, like the rest of us. He doesnʼt recognize this hateful and vengeful young man. Where is the old Gael with the good heart and intentions?(Thatʼs what we all want to know)

Damian finds Elisa in the town square. He sits down next to her on the no touching below the waist bench. He says that she must be worried about Gael. She asks if he saw him yet and Dam tells her no. She accuses him of being so brave with the gun to kidnap her and now heʼs too afraid to face Gael. Dam tells her that he couldnʼt see him because heʼs in jail for fighting while drunk. Dam accuses her of being sad for Gael and she says sheʼs sad for herself and Damian and their lost love.

Padre continues being baffled by New Awful Gael. His name now changes to New Awful Ugly Gael.(This is where I think back to the days when I was pulling for Elisa and Him to get together because he was the only likable normal person on the show. How times have changed)

Although Padre has already paid the fine to set his boy free, he now tells the jailer to keep New Awful Ugly Gael locked up as long as possible, that is, a full 24 hours.

Elisa canʼt believe that just 3 days ago they were mating like rabbits and today they have so much distance between them. They stand then and he thrusts her pelvis to him in an over dramatic fashion and they kiss, clearly with tongues involved, in the square amongst a lot of onlookers for like forever. (I would be so embarrassed to kiss like that in broad daylight in a crowded square with everyone watching, but Iʼm kinda modest that way)

Avances: Gael meets up with Dam and goes in for the kill, and just then Padre yells that heʼs his brother so donʼt do it.

Thanks Novela Maven. I forgot to add at the end that Padre told the jailer to keep Gael in for as long as possible.

Thanks, Cathyx! Wonderful recap. I'll lavish praise on my favorite lines later on -- although I simply MUST get in some appreciative applause for the "no-touching-below-the-waist bench" -- JAJA!

I think it was okay for Paloma to leave Flor in charge of the consultorio, since obviously she's already very talented at both typing and insulting people. My favorite part of the epi, though, was Ramona telling Elisa that her Mom would be so proud of her for surviving all her traumas with "so much dignity" -- as she's STANDING IN A CEMETERY IN HOT PANTS. Caray!

My pleasure, Cathy! I added the part about Padre telling the jailer to keep Gael in Gaol. (snort!)

What a great job you did with this one!

Just to note a few faves:

"He didn't bury a woman alive ... the same day he gained consciousness by being a weak man."

"We go back to 1980 and Flo is typing on a typewriter..."

"Alf pulls out a beautiful fan ... most likely borrowed from Urban Anthropologist"

------
It's interesting that our Elders (Ramona and Lupe) differ on who is to blame. Ramona says that Gael is the only one of the quartet who played "sucio". But Lupe thunders at Dam for what he has done to Gael (even though Lupe KNOWS that Gael has, indeed, played dirty pool.)

As Cathy noted, Lucio's scolding of Dam is purely theater. His actual advice: GO GET HER, TIGER! Marry Elisa cuanto antes!

I'm really hoping that Paloma's moment of truth about Ugly Gael stays with her. Unfortunately most telenovela epiphanies have the shelf life of unpickled herring.

CathyX, thank you! You have certainly gotten the hang of recapping quickly, complete with reading between the lines (i.e. Horacio helping Elisa).

Blue, I so totally agree about the irony of Ramona telling Elisa "her mother would be so proud"! Really? For being stupid? For dressing like a hooker? For being COMPLETELY self centered? I think that's a stretch.

I also found Elisa's "ring around the graveyard" rather humorous. She must be dizzy from stopping at so many graves to chat. In the real world we call talking to dead people LOCO!!!!!

Thanks, Cathyx, awesome recap with lots of funny points. OH and the Florencia scene...I LOOOOOOVED how she told Paloma "You're LATE!" and the murderous look on Paloma's face like QTH? Since when do you come on time for work. Flo actually arrives EARLY for work. I LOVE her!

Katy

Great recap Cathy! There were so many funny lines in your recap I don't know where to start. New Awful Ugly Gael is perfect, as is your title, and I Totally Agree with you, where did our sane Gael go? Gael = gaol, snort!

"We go back to 1980 and Flo is typing on typewriter." This whole paragraph was a work of art. In fact I thought the funniest moment of the entire episode was when Paloma got to work and Flo piped up "You're late!". And then Paloma said "No, you're early." That scene made me laugh so loudly I scared Mr. Sharkbait.

So are Flor and Elisa becoming the new BFFs? It was kinda weird to see them snickering together against Alfie. Nothing like a common enemy to unite people I guess.

Thanks again Cathy, and HORACIO IS BACK! I know he wants to be good but he is an ambiguous hero at best. Should be fun times coming down the pike.

Katy, I missed your comment when I was commenting. Looks like we both liked that Flor/Paloma/Office scene. It was a scream on so many levels, no?

So funny Cathyx - my hats off to all the recappers who have not thrown in the towel on this TN, but are giving us some fun stuff to read the day after our brains take a beating. (I'm beginning to appreciate Gab's pain.)

Love the imagery as well of our little teeny-bopper princess crying in the cemetery in those hot pants. Didn't even care to figure out what she was moaning about--been there done that with her--and all I kept thinking was " Poor Steff must be doing a rotisserie spin in her grave whenever these people show up, especially the whiney twit who claims to be her daughter. A woman who was always so dignified, beautifully dressed, smart and capable and this is how her daughter turned out. Definitely Augusto's genes ruled the day on Betty Sue, er Elisa.

As for the guy in jail, like I said the other day, the real Gael is probably hanging at the beach somewhere, chilling with the chicks and this is his evil look-alike. He took one look in the crystal ball to where life in La Ermita was heading and decided to take a powder for something better. So we have this stand-in.

You have to love how Paloma confesses her undying love while being her best naggy self, and fake-Gael blasts her he never loved her (again--how many times does that make?) AND YET--we just KNOW these two wind up together at the end. What a wonderful foundation to build on.

Horacio siting...lurking and just waiting for his turn in beating the pulp out of someone ( oh yeah, and he's another one with a gun. Maybe he's the sole male in town that knows how to shoot one.)

I've decided the only ending I want is Lucio and Maru heading into retirement sunset, and maybe Braulio and Lolita telling everyone to take a hike and leaving town. (But he has to ditch Tonia--and not sure we will get that by the way this is going.)

Cathyx - this was great. "Gael didn't want to sing a duet" and He didn't bury a woman alive ... the same day he gained consciousness by being a weak man" were just a few of my favorites.

Dawn over Marblehead. Poor Paloma that is. Shock and awe and finally, acceptance. I hope she keeps to that memory when Gael goes crawling back to her after he (hopefully) realizes it was Paloma he truly loved and that Elisa was only an unattainable, childhood memory.

I thoroughly enjoyed the Flor, Elisa and Alfie scene. Alfie was totally flustered, a no doubt rare and new sensation for her.

Excellent job Cathyx. Thanks for posting NovelaMaven!

"AND YET--we just KNOW these two wind up together at the end. "

Hey, DaisynJay, I'm not so sure about that. Bearing in mind that I am almost always wrong about this stuff --

1. Enrique is acting like maybe he really IS in love with Paloma.

2. Now Paloma has seen what a beast Gael really is.

So I still cherish hopes for a PalyQuique boda.

---
About the Paloma/Flor office scene -- one more wonderful thing: Flor is just glomming on to the fact that there are SICK people around ... ewwwww! Is Paloma sure she never caught anything while working there (except Quique of course.)

cathy! thanks for the recap! before i forget and before I enjoy this reading... here is the song that was playing during the Gael/Gab talk/argument/brawl...

Amor perdido,(my lost love)
Si como dicen es cierto que vives
Dichosa sin mi. (if as they say you are happy without me)

Vive dichosa, (go ahead be happy)
Quiza otros brazos te den la fortuna Que yo no te di
(maybe other arms will give you the joy I didn't)

Hoy me convenso (I now am convinced)
Que por tu parte nunca fuiste mia
Ni yo para ti
(that you were never mine in your mind/heart)
Ni tu para mi, ni yo para ti (you were not for me, and i was not for you)
Todo fue un juego, no mas que en la apuesta Yo puse y perdi
(it was all a game, just i ended up being the one who risked the most and the one who lost most)

Fue un juego
Y yo perdi esa es mi suerte
(it was a game and I lost, that is my fate)
Y pago porque soy buen jugador
(and I pay because i am a fair player)
Tu vives mas feliz,
Esa es tu suerte
(you are happier, that is your fate)
Que mas puede decirte un trovador
(what else can a singer tell you)
Vive tranquila (go ahead live at ease)
No es necesario que cuando tu pases
Me digas adios
(you don't need to say goodbye to me)
No estoy herido (I am not badly hurt)
Y por mi madre que no te aborresco
Ni guardo rencor
(and i swear on my mother that i don't despise you or resent you)
Por el contrario junto contigo
Le doy un aplauso al placer y al amor (on the other hand, along with you i applaud pleasure and love)
Que viva el placer y que viva el amor (Cheers to joy! Cheers to love!)

Ahora soy libre
Quiero a quien me quiera, que viva el amor (now i am free, i love whoever i want to love, cheers to love)

daisynjay, for Brau and Lolita to be happy Brau has to ditch Tonia and Lolita has to ditch Elisa. Those two really deserve some alone time but only if they are smart enough to demand it.

Marta, thank you noticing the song and then translating and sharing it with us. That song rocks and you rock for taking the time to share! This is why I adore this group of recappers and commenters. There is always something to learn, even in the morass of stupidity that this telenovela has become. Actually, sometimes stupider = more fun. Like "dignified" Elisa bawling graveside in her hotpants. At least she no longer sports those hideous fake eyelashes.

forgot to say Alfie was wearing my fav (black saphire or onyx, not sure + silver) necklace/earrings set.

Thanks CathyX for a great recap (Gael Gaol HAHAHA) my favorite! and Marta for the song lyrics. Muchas gracias to both of you.

Thought the scene of Florencia playing secretary and getting in some jabs at Alfonsina was just delicious. Flo is quickly becoming my favorite character since everyone else is behaving in such a bizarre manner these days.
Gael looked positively diabolical again. Very scary face. Gabino looks almost wholesome in contrast!

Cathyx- Wonderful recap and perfect title. I really don't know what they've done to Gael. I like the idea that it's his evil twin who came back to town.

The things he said to Paloma were so ugly. I really can't see them ever reconciling and becoming a happily ever after couple.

Like the rest of you, my favorite scenes were of Flor in the Doc's office-- first when she told Pal she was LATE, and then when she and Elisa teased Alfie. What fun!

Cathx this was brilliant. Your recap and the episodes are two totally and completely different things and yours is far superior.

ITA w/Judy, Flo has become one of my favorite characters and that scene with her, Elisa, and Fina was priceless.

Cathyx… so many funny funny snort-worthy phrases all over the place!...
Starting with the very first lines…
Cantina: ʻNobody knows the troubles Iʼve seen, nobody knows my sorrow...ʼ sings Gael into his tequila. Gab hears him and joins in. But Gael doesnʼt want to sing a duet and tells him to leave. (reminds me of a similar line by Mark T’s character in LHDM… where the villain notices Emiliano/Francisco can speak English, he responds ‘yeah but I have no interest in hearing you sing rancheras’)
slams his head into the bar.(thatʼs gotta hurt when you have a bullet in your head) LOL!!
Back at the pokey, this person who looks like Gael but we no longer recognize. INDEED!
She came on to him and little Gael (thanks Cynderella) couldnʼt say no..
.(Can someone give her some phonebooks to sit on so we can see her over that massive typewriter?) LOL!! That is a good reason we seldom see Altair behind any furniture or even sitting at all… cute as can be but petite size…
She pulls out a beautiful fan that she most likely borrowed from Urban Anthropologist for this scene, and starts fluttering it ferociously….Now the fan is fluttering so fast that I think it will break apart. (the production crew must have gone through dozens of fans!! LOL!!)
New Awful Ugly Gael (ok maybe we should use that nickname NAUG. Gaol is great too!)
Damian finds Elisa at the… no touching below the waist bench.

Katy,
Elisa's "ring around the graveyard" rather humorous.
My fav lines of the novela: from Monday : bruja … tu abuela!
And last night… You’re late!...
Your love (tu amor) is a pain (es un dolor) that I need to keep on living. (man, Dam, if she is THAT painful for you, why do you still insist in marrying her and going against your mother’s wishes?? You want that torture for the rest of your life? Does the Elisa obsession look to anyone like it IS Worse than a bullet in the head?
Just look at what Gael has turned into, and now Dam is losing it for her.

Definitely! Flo and Quique has become the couple TO ROOT FOR in this novela... certainly not Dam/Lisa or Gaol/oma.
Flo/Alfie/Elisa was the best scene of the night for sure! what fun!

I think we are seeing the Florencia for whom Dam originally fell. I'm glad she found her way back to herself. She is far more interesting than Elisa and Paloma. If I were Enrique I would seriously consider forgiving Flor for wanting to kidnap my sister's baby simply because La Ermita is slim pickin's when it comes to novias. A simple kidnapping I could live with, the constant sniveling and crying would drive me nuts. (I can't believe I just wrote that sentence, LOL.)

Cap'n--I consider it an honor to have the same simultaneous thought as you!!!

Marta--You are such a gem! Those song lyrics are how Gael (from the Gaol!) SHOULD be thinking but of course he's not. It's like it was written for his character. How clever of you to catch it.

And Daisy'nJay ITA about the rotisserie spin Steffie must be in!!! OMG her grave marker seems to be getting WORSE. Looks like a temporary, cardboard sign. The only thing I can think of is the writers want a dramatic "After" tombstone in the last capitulo. She'll have an Arlington Cemetery monument on her grave.

Thanks again, Cathyx! This recap was perfect!

Katy

Katy, that is how THE ENTIRE music selection of LHDM was made... the writer chose a song then wrote the episode based on the lyrics of the song that was going to be included... even some songs were included in different episodes with TOTALLY different tone and meaning... even Fernando Gaitan (creator/writer or Cafe and Betty la Fea) wrote about Monica Agudelo (the creator/writer of LHDM) that the story was by Monica but the script was by Jose Alfredo Jimenez (the most famous ranchera composer of all time) who is the author of most of the songs used in LHDM (the producers bought the rights to use his entire repertoire).

Hi, CathyX and thanks for a great recap.

Althought many of my favorite lines have already been mentioned (loved the PP about Flo and 1980!) I have to give my strong vote for favorite to your moniker for the-actor-known-formerly-as-Gael—New Awful Ugly Gael. If we abbreviate it as NAUG the word is so ugly sounding that it almost matches the character.

Speaking of the character, he is now an absolute pig. Heaven knows Paloma has her problems but he has treated her like dirt in the last few episodes. He is NAUG the Terrible IMHO.

Dam/Little E = FF. Sigh. Blue, I laughed out loud at Ramona's comment to Elisa about her 'dignity' at her mother's grave.

Kudos to you, CathyX, for constructing a recap that was so fun to drink in—unlike this swill of a capitulo.

EJ

We finally got the "Ultimas Semanas" notice at the end of this episode.

Thanks for all the nice comments.

I agree with you Daisynjay. The only couples that I want to see come out of this in the end is Delores and Braulio and Lucio and Mara. The rest should just go their separate ways.

Superb recap, cathyx. Thanks.

Well, any concerns about the stability of the bullet in Gabino's brain should have been allayed by the shaking Gael gave it last night. I pictured it rattling around in there as Gael was banging Gab's head. Gab looked surprisingly none the worse for wear in the jail the next day.

Katy, I shared you dismay last night over the state of Stefy's grave. I thought that Elisa is an habenero tycoon these days... why not at least get her mom a decent headstone?

Carlos

Cathyx - Thank you for the recap. Or maybe it is a 'recrap.' I doubt I'll watch much of my recording, but the Flo/Paloma/typewriter/Alf scene looks like fun, so I'll check that one out.

Recrap! Doris you always crack me up. You are very funny.

Carlos...
any concerns about the stability of the bullet in Gabino's brain should have been allayed by the shaking Gael gave it last night. I pictured it rattling around in there as Gael was banging Gab's head.
LOL!! i hadn't even thought of that!! so funny!!

I was wondering where that fan disappeared to...

Loved the scene with Florencia socking it to the Botox Queen. That was so overdue. Now who's going to take on the TangelHo?

I just don't want TangelHo to dissappear(die, run away, etc) before the anvil gets to her (everyone realizes who was who and who was behind the scam/deal)

You guys are reminding me that Carmina wasn't in this episode. It hadn't occurred to me until I read your comments. No, she has a lot to answer for yet. And I can't wait.

CathyX that was just wonderful! You have such a great sense of humor. I missed the episode but I'm sure glad I didn't miss your recap!

Loopy came! Loopy Saw! Loopy spilled the beans!!
