Por ella soy Eva #38 9/7/12 : I'll go if you go. Or will I? Are you going? Maybe I won't. Hmmm...

Our characters spent much of the hour debating whether or not they should go to Acapulco.

Eva and/or Juan Carlos
JC tells Mimi what he learned on the phone. Supposedly JC bought a $3 million share in that hotel with the money he stole from GI, but the hotel never got the money. Surely Pluto has it. They'll need to find someone who can crack a safe!

In the restroom, Cindy(?) asks Eva if she has a "toalla." Eva calls her "clueless," and cluelessly hands the confused girl a paper towel from the dispenser. (Sanitary pads are also called "towels" in other nations, including England.)

Helena tells Eva she's not going to Acapulco because of her father. Eva remarks that Bastardo is a little overboard about Lalito. It's not fair that he's so hung up on having a boy. Males are the weaker sex. [Comments about women putting up with monthlies and pregnancy while men get faint at the sight of blood.] Toni and Helena try to persuade Eva to go to Acapulco.

Modesto & Eugenia
Modesto is annoyed because Eugenia wants to search all over GI for JC. They run into Marcela, who offers to help Eugenia continue looking so Modesto doesn't have to hang around. (Does he have something more important to do? I doubt it.)

At home, Eugenia asks Modesto to buy her a cell phone so that JC can call her. Modesto refuses, and unkindly points out that she doesn't know how to use one and JC's never going to call. She's full of crazy talk.

Helena and family
Bastardo acknowledges Helena's right to take Lalito to Acapulco, but worries aloud that she might be tempted not to bring him back. And the doctor told him not to get all upset... who knows what might happen. Helena agrees not to take Lalito to Acapulco... but she won't go either. Bastardo gloats.

Helena tells Lalito there's a change in plans. They won't go to the beach, but they'll be together all weekend. Lalito is sad that Helena and Grandpa fight - and so do Grandma and Grandpa. In fact, they had a REALLY big fight and Grandma wanted to move out! Helena tries not to let him see how impactada she is.

Silvia tries to persuade Bastardo to let Helena take Lalito to Acapulco. He makes the usual nasty remarks about Helena, but dwells on the fact that Lalito has cost Bastardo more than he's cost Helena, so he's more Bastardo's than Helena's. Also, he's their only boy. He just wants to take care of him. "Too bad you didn't always want to take such good care of a boy," Silvia remarks cryptically. That shuts him up. He grinds his teeth.

Helena finds her mother crying in the kitchen and asks her about the fight where she threatened to move out. They could have moved out together and taken Lalito with! But Silvia says they've had that fight before. She doesn't know if she can live away from him. (You know, it doesn't even take a frying pan. Did you hear about the woman who bludgeoned her husband to death with a coffee mug?)

Helena tells Pluto she's not going. He says too bad - he was looking forward to playing with Lalito. He offers to talk to Bastardo for her. Helena would rather handle it on her own. Pluto says OK, I'll just go with my distant wife who doesn't understand me. Helena suggests that he take the opportunity to work things out with Antonia!

Lucia has been really whiny and annoying lately. She says she won't go if Helena doesn't go. Then Helena changes her tactics and and says no, you're right, better not go. Maybe you'd run into Mauricio and he'd make a fool of you. Oh right, now Lucia wants to go. Maybe she'll meet someone new. One nail drives out another.

Pluto and friends (I use the term loosely)
Angelica breakfasts at Rebeca's house. Rebeca is surprised that Angelica is willing to play second banana to Paty after Santiago gets married. Angelica points out that Rebeca is doing the same with Pluto. Ha! But then Rebeca is called to the front door - Pluto has sent her a new vehicle. It's a little Toyota FJ Cruiser like Fernanda had in MEPS, except this one's a pretty blue. (Google tells me this color is Voodoo Blue, but they don't make 'em that color any more... the new blue is Cavalry Blue and it's more masculine-looking.)

Meanwhile, Onesimo eats chicharrones in an elaborately messy way while Pluto grumps that Adriano won't sell him those shares of the business yet. He's still got the fraud money in a safe place, but he can't touch it for now. Anyway, it's not enough to buy the shares with.

Pluto tells Onesimo that Antonia is developing a mind of her own, and he doesn't like it. As for Helena, he's looking forward to seeing her in her bathing suit. He's going to offer her his cabin in Acapulco. Rebeca calls to thank him for the car. She'll be waiting for him in the Jacuzzi. He begs off for today. She says she'll thank him in Acapulco, then. He reminds her that he's bringing "the cow," but he's got an idea for how to handle that.

Later, Pluto and Rebeca scheme to send Toni to Acapulco so they can fool around in the city. After Rebeca leaves, he takes out Helena's photo and drools at it. "Helena, this time you're not going to be able to resist."

Marcela et al
Marcela and family arrive at home to find that the power has been shut off. Guess what, they had agreed that HE was going to handle the bills... but he blames HER for putting him in charge of bills because "you know how I am." ARGH. Frying pan? Coffee cup?

Next morning, everyone's excited because Acapulco weekend starts tomorrow. Marcela's not going because she has something to do. She hints that Fernando should stay home... but he says he will go by himself! Marcela confides to the blue dresses that she needs a break from him, and asks them to make sure he doesn't drink too much!

Adriano
Antonia tells Eva she feels more independent now that she's working. She thanks Eva for bringing her out of her shell. She confides that she's worried that Adriano is unhappy that he doesn't have a family of his own. Adriano shows up, and Toni suggests that the three of them go out for a drink.

At the bar, Eva lets Mimi know where she is, then joins Toni and Adriano at their table. Adriano remarks how cheerful Toni has been lately. Toni credits Eva. Toni excuses herself for a bit. Alone with Eva, Adriano thanks Eva for her friendship with Toni.

Later, Mimi finds them and tries to flirt with Adriano. Toni asks Mimi and Eva whether they're cousins on the mother's side or on the father's side. They give different answers, then they give a longer answer to ensure that everyone is totally confused. Adriano gets a call from Paola and steps away. Toni complains to Eva and Mimi about his little chippie who probably is just after him for his money.

Next day, another phone call in the office. Adriano wants Paola to go to Acapulco so he can introduce her to his sister. She complains that he's being "intense," which I have observed is her ultimate insult. He says he's not getting any younger. They always go where she wants to go; tonight he'd like to pick the place - a museum or theater. She dreads having to go to the ballet and opera and all that boring cultural stuff.

Adriano says goodbye and drops the phone in dejected exhaustion. In walks Eva with some papers for him to sign. He asks if Eva thinks he's too old to be with a young woman. Eva replies that age doesn't matter if you're really in love. Eva tells him not to be misled by a pair of big... "eyes", she says, gesturing for boobs.

Adriano tells Toni about Paola. It's getting serious. She hopes he's not making a mistake. He wants her to meet Paola and decide for herself. "I hope you're not confusing love with the passion of the moment."

Finally... It's Acapulco Day!
Eva bids Helena a motherly farewell and thanks her for letting her stay at her house. Helena has to practically shove her out the door.

Silvia gives Lalito a wholesome and healthy breakfast with milk, fruit, and a ton of baked goodies.

Pluto is pretending to be sick so he can't go to Acapulco. Toni wants to stay home with him. He very generously urges her to go. This will be her first time in Acapulco with the employees. (His temperature is normal.) He also generously offers to be affectionate with her, but she decides not to catch his germs.

JC isn't thrilled to be going to Acapulco without Helena. Mimi whines about Adriano's preference for lil' chippies.

Pluto calls Rebeca with a change of plans. He's going to Acapulco and Toni's staying home. He'll be alone at the cabin, and no one else will know he's there. Rebeca should go to the cabin, don't let anyone see her, and wait for him.

Eva joins Toni poolside in Acapulco. (Why do people vacation at the beach only to lounge by a swimming pool?) Toni wants her best friend - Eva - to have a copy of her housekeys, "just in case." (She doesn't have the keys ready at the moment.) She also tells Eva that Pluto's alone at home in bed. ("Whose bed?" Eva quips.) Eva is muy, pero muy, displeased to know that Pluto will have a chance to nose around Helena after all.

Next time:
Angelica sees Pluto in town (with Helena and Lalito, but I don't think she knows who they are) and tells Rebeca. Antonia walks in on JC sans wig.

Is anyone else worried that Modesto is going to get fed up with Eugenia always talking about JC, and try to put her in a "home"? :-(

Thanks, Julie, for the fun and fabulous recap.

I hope Modesto wouldn't go so far as to put Eugenia in a home, BUT--I was comparing Modesto/Eugenia to Eduardo/Silvia in my mind. M/E are more cultured, better housed, and better dressed, but the attitudes of the men toward a wife of many years are similar. Modesto is a little more polished and polite, but almost equally impatient as Eduardo.

I'm ready for Pluto to find a few obstacles in his path. I want him to stay as far away from Helena as possible. Charming but deadly.
La Paloma

It's true - Modesto doesn't really listen to Eugenia. He hears her words but he doesn't really try to understand her. Actually, Eduardo pays more heed to Silvia than Modesto does to Eugenia - and that's why he loses his temper.

Also, regarding sexism and misogyny: I watched all of Mad Men Season 4 over the past week, and I have to say, the parallels between contemporary Mexico (or Colombia) vs. mid-1960s USA are quite disturbing. When Adriano realized that Paola was his friend's daughter, I had exactly the same thought I did on Monday morning when I watched Don Draper say goodnight to his own daughter: That secretary you just nailed and then dissed is someone's daughter, too. Why doesn't your brain ache at the very thought of it? Some innocent little girl that you know will someday be treated the same way by another man just like you.

I'll go out on a limb here. Antonia's discovery that Eva is Juan. I think it's for reals. Not your usual fake event in avances, like Juan's imagined bed scene with Helena. I think Toni really discovers the truth.

It's not too early for one person to discover, especially since it's a short TN. But that has ALL SORTS of ramifications!

Of course she'll be in a fury at first. She has said that JC caused her more agony than anyone ever, and she said she could not think of a single good thing to say of him.

BUT I'm equally sure that she won't out him to everyone. It's too early in the series for that. Entonces, why does she keep his secret? The most obvious answer would be that Juan wins her over. Quite a feat, considering all the water under that bridge.

Or else... "the enemy of my enemy is my ally." If Toni gets solid proof of one of Pluto's many sins (stealing the project, the fraud against Juan, the affair with Rebecca, the pursuit of Helena), and if Juan helps her through the agony, Toni could form a strong bond with Juan. And of course she'd turn against Pluto. In fact, no matter how it plays out, I assume that if she keeps the secret from Pluto, it means she must have turned against Pluto to some degree.

Okay, I'm going through all sorts of contortions trying to figure out how this could all play out. Can someone who is more clear-thinking suggest a roadmap for this new development?

And thank you, Julie, for the recap. You explained a whole mess of details that cruised right over my head. I'll blame the four people merrily chattering in the kitchen while I was trying to watch the show.

Julie wonderful recap. Loved your title, lol. I am so hoping Modesto doesn't put Eugenia in a home. Maybe Modesto will think of something to occupy Eugenia's mind instead.

Julie-I agree with you about Adri and his best friend's daughter. I think Adri will give up on Paola. I think Eva or Mimi or even Antonia will put the kibosh on that, once they see who she is. Antonia will probably know. I know Mimi already knows who she is, as far as age, but doesn't know the relationship Adri has with Jesus. I am hoping Adri gives Mimi a chance.

Paula, I too think you are right about JC and Antonia knowing it is him for realz. She will be mad as a hornet at first, but then she will think of all JC/Eva has done for her so far, and will want a detailed explanation about why he did this. I don't think he will tell her about Pluto at all. JC/Eva will end up as Antonia's ally. I think Antonia will discover the truth. She has had hints already, the missing thesis, how Helena's work so closely matches Pluto's, Pluto never wanting to go out with her, she'll figure it out, she's a smart woman. Antonia will start keeping a closer eye on JC/Eva and Pluto too. I think JC will point Antonia in the right direction.

Yes, thank you Julie. I thought this episode spun its wheels like a car in mud and I was lost in several spots. But it's OK because I agree with you guys, I think the avances of Toni seeing JC are genuine and I'm very excited about this new development. Mimi and JC's relationship is great fun, but it's a bit silly. I think Toni and JC's relationship will be deeper, and they'll both learn a great deal from each other.

Modesto has been more patient and kind with Eugenia in past episodes. Tonight he was more of a dick. But It was so sweet how Marcela took care of Eugenia, even though she obviously doesn't also believe JC is still alive.

And Julie, that's a great observation comparing the U.S. in the 60's (Mad Men) to what's being shown as contemporary Mexico or Columbia. I've only seen the first season of Mad Men, but the thing that struck me most was how all that behavior we now see as inappropriate was accepted by everyone as the norm. The 60's were not all that long ago, and to see the contrast makes me feel a little proud to be living in a time that corrects some of that unfairness.

Julie, great recap -- and your title pretty much summed up the whole episode.

I agree with the comments about Mad Men. It's hard sometimes to imagine that we ever held those attitudes but every time I doubt its accuracy I think a bit & realize that that is how it was. Maybe a few shows like PESE will help to break some of those machismo patterns in Mexico in less than 40 years.

That cryptic referencs by Sylvia "Too bad you didn't always want to take such good care of a boy," just may be an important clue to the question of why Eduardo is so angr & vengeful.

Thanks, Julia, for reminding me of the background on the power outage. I forgot that dinner table conversation a while ago when Fernando demanded to be able to "handle" the family finances. -- and then he dares tell Marsela that it's her fault for expecting him not to loose the bills?!?! Does anybady think that his bruised male ego may make him flirt with cheating on Marsela while he's in Acapulco?

I loved your asides about frying pans to the head, Julie.

I think that Modesto's attitude toward Eugenia is because of her Memory Loss rather than Eduardo style dismissal of women.

I have no doubt that Toni confronting J'Eva is for real.

How will it play out? Long-term, I think the good that Eva's done for Toni, as a person in her life, will more than outweigh the damage Juan did to her when he was just a person on the periphery.

But how long will it take to get to the long term? Even though Eva is Toni's best friend, it could be a difficult adjustment. After all, she was ready to give a housekey to the guy who supposedly stole $3 million from her company!

Antonia is generally a very trusting person who takes explanations at face value. But what is the face value of J'Eva?

I don't know how to define "short" but this hasn't yet ended in Mexico and thus far they've aired 155 episodes. So it's short as comedies go.

Yes, this episode did spin its wheels a lot. All the conversation about going and staying drove me crazy and required me to pay closer attention than I was really in the mood for! But it was worth it to understand how and where everyone ended up.

Rebeca's wrath will be mighty when she finds out that Pluto stood her up. It will be even mightier if she finds out who he stood her up for (and again, I'm not completely sure Angelica knows who Helena is, so Rebeca might not find out right away).

I have a lot to do today, so naturally I'm sitting here putting too much thought into people who don't exist. So here's another thought I just had:

Maybe Bastardo got rough with Silvia when she was very pregnant; she miscarried, and the baby they lost was a boy. That would explain a lot, including why he now just grinds his teeth when you can tell he'd rather slug her.

Worse - maybe it was twins. Helena survived and the boy did not. For him, Helena is a bitter reminder, a reproach for his loutish behavior. A punishment that never goes away. And with Lalito as his redemption, he has no further need for that punishment and doesn't understand why anyone would disagree with him.

Whaddaya think? I wonder if I finally got one right!

Julie- I don't think you are wrong at all. I think you might be right about Helena maybe having a twin brother that died. That actually makes alot of sense, and Eduardo the Bastardo must have been to blame for it. That's why he is always grinding his teeth I think. He has nothing to blame Silvia for only himself, but he blames Helena for all of it. I have never seen a character that hated his daughter so much.

Rebeca may be a danger to Pluto too. She won't take this sitting still. If Rebeca ever feels threatened by Helena she'll do something to make sure Pluto is exposed. She knows most of his secrets, that was a bad move on Pluto's part. I have a feeling she will be getting revenge in her way too.

Wonderful, funny recap Julie...and so topical bringing in the recent case of a woman clubbing her husband to death with a coffee cup.

The discussions on this line are always so interesting. I was in my 20's in the 60's and yes, that's how it was (Nora Ephron wrote about it also)and all I can tell you was the attitude was even worse in Europe where I spent some of those years. I've mentioned this a lot, but here goes again...I was in Switzerland 59-60 and women were trying to get the right to vote. But they were defeated!

You're right, Madeleine, that Pluto is playing with fire by underestimating Rebecca. She doesn't know the worst of his secrets. She knows nothing about the theft of the 3 million or the framing of JC. BUT Pluto did let something slip the other day & has her suspicious. She's likely to poke around & try to figure out where he was when he was supposed to be in Playa Majagua. She must be as curious as Antonia about the discrepancy of the locals saying he was only there once when he claims to have been there twice.

If she feels that Plutarco has thrown her over Rebecca doesn't have much to lose and vengeance to gain if she exposes Pluto's cheating. THough she will probably try to keep her own name out of it by framing Helena again.

You know what I realized yesterday? Fernando reminds me of Homer Simpson (but without Homer's charm).

Julie - thanks for a fun recap. Appreciate all the detail. Your twin theory sounds very plausible to me.

Adriano is a mess. So funny when he hid his face behind the desk blotter so Eva couldn't see him crying about being too old for Paola.

I always thought Lalito would be the first to find out about JC. Can't wait to see how JC will get Antonia to stay mum.

I thought Lalito would be the first too, but now that I'm thinking about it, I'm glad he isn't. That kid has enough confusion and stress in his life without having to keep such a big secret from his mother too.
