Amor Bravío #52 (Uni 47) Fri 10/26/12 Up From The Deep and Over the Heap; Luzma Knows With Tio Pervertido It Ain't Over Till The Fat Slob's Six Foot Under, But Dio Has Plans For Leo
Capítulo 52 -
[Warning! This particular episodio is not for viewing on a full stomach!! Do so at your own risk!]
All is not well with Luzma and Company we see as we return to the clinic in Aculco. We learn, courtesy of the doctor’s trumpeting the news to the entire room full of people, that not only is Luzma vindicated in her claims of rape, but she is now pregnant from that rape. Viewerville again suffers the lurch and tumble of their stomachs right along with Luzma’s as she learns her fate. (My mind races back to my H.S. Biology class discussions about recessive genes. So, is Luzma or Leoncio the recessive one in this pool?) That’s not the worst of it tho’ boyzngirlz! She learns she’s got to be at least twelve (count ‘em) weeks along before a DNA test can be done to prove paternity!! Luzma finally faints after hearing Piedad object to what Lic. Becerra explains about aborting the child: that, as a rape victim, if she decides by three months’ time to abort the child she is legally “allowed” to do so. (Ok. So will there be a race for time to get the results back so she can have the abortion done before the trimester deadline is up? Or, will she miraculously have a telenovela god induced miscarriage?)
Oscar and D’Andres discuss the fact that they have 72 hrs. to find the proof they need or Leo might get out on bail; but they could file a request to keep the dumbfXckXr (and I do mean that literally) in custody while they continue to wait for the proof to develop so to speak.
Cam stares over at Leoncio with utter disgust and loathing. The way Leo looks at Luzma makes Viewerville squirm and begs the question if that’s not the way this invertebrate slug was spawned himself!!
In the doctor’s office, Piedad gives Luzma her (and the the Church’s) advice not to blame the baby even if it is “dirty”, but the doctor intervenes with a pained look at Piedad to STFU before giving hers (and the State’s) more technical view: that the baby isn’t “dirty”, but was forcibly conceived with a member of Luzma’s family; and it’s up to the rape victim to determine whether she keeps the kid or not. Additionally, explains the lady doc (another nice touch to this scene, and the one that most of Viewerville’s female population was definitely waiting to have covered), since her uncle would necessarily have the same genetic material as Luzma, the probability of birth defects, deformities, and certain types of diseases increases enormously. (Hats off to Mariana van Rankin and the cameraman for capturing the combination of horror, disgust, self-loathing, shock, and maturity Luzma demonstrates during this whole segment of the story.) Tears roll down Luzma’s face as the full horror of the situation envelops her to the point of suffocation.
Meanwhile, in another part of the place, ol’ Tío de Leo thinks it’s simply a matter of he-said, she-said and gives his B.S. version to the judge: he was angry about the young man she was dating but he stuck around La Malquerida that whole day. But as to raping her? Well, he is just unable to do anything like that! The judge looks like he has been around this particularly obnoxious legal block a time or two before and can see right through ol’ Leo’s bull-copious story, it’s so blasted full of holes!! Leo’s going to have to spend time in the clink till they can get proof one way or the other, he says. The judge does allow him his one phone call. Leo calls Alonso.
Back in the waiting area, Pablo lets Luzma know he’s with her all the way. Becerra says the criminal attorney he knows is on the way to take over Luzma’s case. Pablo bemoans the fact that if he’d only known before this Leo would be in jail already, but D’Andres explains to Mariano and him that Luzma kept quiet because the S.O.B. had threatened to kill Pablo otherwise. “--Luzma loved Pablo so much she would have rather suffered her fate in silence.”
Leo’s forced to make that call in front of the judge and the guards; he’s reduced to practically grunting…er…speaking in code. Al doesn’t have time for the slug, he says, till Leo tells him he’s stuck in jail. Alons-oh-oh is worried it’s about Padre Baldomero’s untimely send off to the Pearly Gates. No, it’s not about the padre, assures Leo, but he’s sure Al wouldn’t like him to have to spend time in jail… or would he? Cara de wide mouth frog de Alonso.
Dan finally makes it to the lab and hands over his little packet of hairs—his and Camila’s—to see if they’re truly related. (Damn! A writing team that gives the main characters a functioning upper brain! Donchajusluvit?)
Cam, Piedad, and Luzma finally arrive back home at the M.Q. Cam has a chat and the biologist in her confirms what the doctor at the clinic told Luzma and her mother about the baby’s chances health wise. Luzma breaks down in tears. She just can’t have a baby from her uncle!! (Here, here!) Cam tells her not to feel pressured, and just to do what she feels is right for herself, no more.
Across the way at los Albarrán, Pablo and Mariano return with the news that Luzma is pregnant from the rape. Iliana and Rocio are disgusted by the idea. “—She’s pregnant by her uncle?” Rocio is even more determined now to dissuade her son from associations with “people like that.” It’s a sin! But well, it’s not his problem any longer, she advises trying uselessly to sooth, and he’s going away to study anyway. No way, screams Pablo! He’s going to be there for Luzman because it’s his problem also! She is the love of his life!! “--It’s not her fault what happened!! If she kept quiet about it and put up with all that, it was because her uncle threatened to kill me!!”
Rocio tries telling “Pablito” (that was a big tactical mistake, Rocío, calling him Pablito) that he’s way too young to know what true love is. Pablo says hey, don’t call me Pablito! And besides, by my age, Mama, you were already married and had had Mariano!! Cayetano backs up his wife then and says he figures it’s best to keep away from that situation. “--Leave ahead of time for the U.S and get away from all this.” Pablo refuses. Cayetano advises him against carelessly throwing away a good future for some little girl that is an impossibility. Pablo throws his hands in the air and walks off in a huff. Yago tells his parents they’re wasting their breath cuz Pablo is head over heels for Luzma and would do anything for her. His parents ask which side he’s on. They thought he was on their side. Yago says he might have been once, but now he doesn’t know whose side he’s on!! He is so upset he leaves the table in a huff also. Mariano simply sits there with an amorphous expression on his face. (Dunno--maybe it was just a bad case of gas and he could use a good dose of Beano.)
Back in the living room at the M.Q., Agustina and Cami discuss poor Luzma’s tragic situation and the horror of being preggers with her uncle’s baby. (Damn, I feel like I’ve been slimed!! I want to get up and shower every time I have to write about this!) Cam agrees. (Like who wouldn’t?) “--All we can do is support her and that’s what I’ve promised her.” Talk turns to who to put in as ranch foreman now. Cami toys with the idea of D’Andres and then Rodolfo. Mama pshaws at D’Andres who’s really nothing more than “a driver.” Then talk turns to Cam’s unconscious ravings about loving D’Andres back in her bed at the hospital. Cara de Whoopsadaisy!! Wha-a-a-a-t? de Camila.
Long-faced ‘Lonso finally makes it down to the county lock-up and finds Leoncio with the rest of the dregs of society. (The slime is dripping off the walls.) Al-l-l-let-me-owda-here!! is disgusted with this festering piece of human debris. “—You are an animal. How could you come to this? What’s the freakin’ matter with you??” Leo answers that the flesh is weak and well, women, it’s the women. “--She is your niece, though!” “Sure, but was I really going to let her leave for another man, if he was really only going to play with her? Now, help me get out of here, Boss, alright?” Nothin’ doin’. Al mistakenly tries a bit of solipsistic logic, obviously something which necessarily flies right over the head of Luzma’s troglodytic tío. “—I didn’t get you into this mess and I’m not going to get you out of it!!” “—Yeah? Perhaps but, if they screw me over then I’m going to screw you over and I will talk!” Leonicio threatens to let loose with the goods on his mama and him and the padre, and then he’ll mention Dionisio’s having Julian’s number on his little phone also. “—Are you blackmailing me?” “--Duh, wha'??? I don’t know what that means. Please, Boss. Just get me out of here and get me a job; I’ll go far away and clam up. I swear it.” Al is like let me get back to you on that one.
Back at the M.Q., Cam and Mama Metiche continue their chat about mentioning D’Andres in her sleep. (Hey Gussie! Nobody’s responsible for what comes out of their mouth when they’re raving from fever and at death’s door!!) Anyway, Cam moves the conversation along saying that Mama should enjoy her big-time business trip and not worry about little ol’ her. She knows English well and has Issadora there for female company. All should go well.
At the same time, in the kitchen, Piedad is in tears for having been so blind about her brother’s true intentions with her daughter. The Gal Friday in the kitchen suggests that if Leo could do this to Luzma to keep her from getting married, he could be capable of anything, and that perhaps Piedad really wasn’t left at the altar after all and perhaps Luzma’s daddy really never abandoned Piedad and her. “—Forgive me for saying this, but could Leoncio have done something so he wouldn’t manage to get to the church?” Piedad pops a couple of mental light bulbs as her brain-switch finally flips to the ‘ON’ position.
Meanwhile, the lovelorn teens are in their beds, remembering the way they met and how they fell in love.
Over at los Alberran, Nana overhears from the hallway as Yago and Illie are arguing again about how it was all Illie’s fault that Luzma got raped. Illie insists all she did was call the uncle to let him know Luzma was getting married; she didn’t tell him to rape her or to get her pregnant!! (True dat!) Well, it’s all the same and she might as well have, says Yago, she’s to blame for making the phone call. Illie snidely warns him not to start spreading it around cuz she’ll tell everyone he was in on it.
Back at the M.Q., Cam gives Rodolfo the foreman’s [capetaz] job. Later on, Cam calls Rafael to see if he “got hold of” Daniel. Yeah, says Rafa, but DDA has a few things to catch up on and won’t be able to meet with them for a few days more.
Dio reads the faked Daniel’s e-mail reply that Rafa and Viviana cooked up for a meet. He pats himself on the back over it.
In the kitchen of Amanda’s B&B, she and Natalia are preparing dinner. Amanda mentions one of their neighbors said that the day Padre B. died she was standing in her doorway and noticed a suspicious looking female coming out of the B&B. (Hmmm. Now I wonder what gave Neighbor Lady her first clue!!) “--She had [very] short blond hair and was covering her head with a [very bright] red shawl. (One of yous twos has got to have a church bell or two going off inside one of yer heads by now, duh! Like uh, do we know any short-haired, blond women in these parts here where everybody’s a Moreno? Or, did I miss the fact that Nat’s never ever met Alonso-n-so’s big, bad, BLOND mama de Hissadora?) Nat tells Mama not to go ‘round imagining things.

Anyway, what called attention to the woman was her hurried, nervous look, like she was hiding something, maybe? (Dunno. I suppose the woman could have been worried she’d miss her bus back north to Texas or was just wearing the souvenirs she’d just bought…..) “—Now who could it have been?” “--Obviously she’s not from around here cuz nobody (but Nobody) looks like that here. But she could have come in while Julian was making me show him all the rooms.” Nat wonders if she came in during that time just to kill the padre. (¡Eso!)

Bedtime at the M.Q. D’Andres sneaks into Cami’s bed in the guesthouse, disrobes (¡Ai-yai-yai!) and starts cuddling under the sheets. (¡Ufff!) “--I thought you weren’t coming.” “--How could you think I wasn’t going to come? After a day like today, the only thing I wanted was to hold you and to kiss you.” They agree that neither of them could get the tragic, horrific business about Luzma out of their heads. She remembers to tell him that the police came back asking for her uncle’s antique revolver again. “--Julian apparently was shot with the same caliber bullet as my uncle’s gun. Alonso doesn’t know a thing about it and since they couldn’t find it the police are going to be coming back to question everyone.” Dan is red-flag-ruh-roh-impactado over that. He asks why they can’t just question the farmhands themselves? Cam says she’d rather the police handle the case and the questioning directly. Cam asks for a few more snuggles [acurrucaditos=cuddles] before dozing off, and D’Andres promises a lifetime of ‘em and then accommodates.
The next day, amidst fields of bulls and the obligatory bullsheise (salud!), Ximeana vulgarly gives Mama her printouts for bring-me-back’s from Vegas. Xi tries coaxing Cam out about her changed and “glowing appearance”, and asks if she’s got a new man in her life or something. Cam and Mama tell her to nix the inanities. Cami’s just about to get divorced and isn’t over that trauma yet. She’s got no time for lovers!! (Viewerville snickers in unison.) And speaking of those who pile it up and on au natural, who should come looking to chat with Xi but El Bruto de Bruno?

She says she understands that many people around there might tend to have the same name [homónimos], but Moran is a not exactly common. He snickers something about traveling to other countries and having been arrested for something illegal that some other Bruno Moran apparently did and then being released once they realized he was the wrong man. “Je-Je, could be he’s the one your friend, …er…Viviana was married to.” Cami doesn’t look like she’s buying his brand of fertilizer. She looks over at Xi and asks where she knows this guy from anyway. Xi quickly tells her he was the boyfriend of a friend of hers up in Monterrey, and that they ran into each other down here just a day or two ago. (Well, that’s half true, at least.) Cam and Mama need to skedaddle now, but Cam tells Xi she wants to speak to her in her office at the guesthouse when she and the gentleman are done chatting.
(Skin crawl alert!!) After she leaves, Bruno obnoxiously remarks to Xi about Cami’s hotness. He gets to his down ’n dirty other line of bidnez right away then and says he wants more money from her and a lot of it. “—Better lend me that helping hand or your beautiful sis and charming mama are gonna find out you’re nothing more than a lowly, despicable thief and wanted by the Monterrey police!” “—You wouldn’t dare, Bruno!” He snickers and then snarls. “—Je-je. You have two ways to go. It’s very simple: freedom or jail!! So you decide, doll-face.” (Anybody else feel like they’ve just been slimed again?)
Out in the driveway, Cam and Gussie discuss Xi’s possibly staying around a bit longer if she’s got that nice young man, Bruno, to keep her company a while. (Gag ‘n snicker.) D’Andres arrives for the bags and the trip to the airport. (Damn, does he look fine!! You own Beige and Baby Blue, honey!!) Gussie entrusts the care of her two daughters to him. (Sigh.) Oh, no! She’s left her cash in the bathroom and has to go back inside for it all. D’Andres sneaks a smooch and Cam tells him to wipe off the lipstick marks cuz the guys are gonna think he’s a bit of a poof otherwise. (Tee jee) He keeps trying for a few more, snap smoochies but quickly stops when Gussie races back outside to them. (Bummer.) They exchange good-bye’s and Gussie races off to the car. D’Andres mimics Cami and mouths silent smoochies and I love you’s to her before heading off to the car and Gussie.
Over drinks back at Dio’s place, he and Al are apparently discussing Leo’s jailhouse threats over not keeping mum. Dio doesn’t like being threatened, let alone from some no account farmhand at the M.Q.!! Lon reminds him that Leo saw Julian’s phone number on Dio’s cell phone and that he knows D’Andres is working for him on the sly. Dio laments that if the mess with Julian hadn’t happened, they could off offensive ol’ Pervertido de Leo without a problem. However, they can’t afford to raise suspicions at this point in time. (Oh, do!!) Al adds that nobody’d give a flip after what he did to his niece! It’s that they can’t trust having a blackmailer on their team now. Dio doesn’t disagree and says he thinks they could possibly use Leoncio as a scapegoat [chivo expiatorio] later on somehow. On the way to the airport, says Dio, he’s going to arrange to have his mouthpiece, Lic. Beltran, do what’s necessary to free the slug. Alonso insists that he doesn’t want the perverted scum working with him at all. No problem, says Dio, he’ll be working directly for Dio.
El Diablo de Dio then asks about Al and Cami’s divorce. Al tells him it isn’t happening so to back off already. Dio guffaws and says hey, you lost her long time ago, so what’s it matter to you what I do? Loose-lips de Lon lets it fly. “—Let her get involved with the new capataz, some cowhand, or even her chauffeur, but she isn’t gonna be with you!” Dio lets loose with another deafening guffaw and thinks to himself that every time he sees Alonso he tolerates him less and less; naw, the one he really should be deep-sixing and leaving for worm food is Alonso!

I'm glad the law in Mexico excludes rape and incest for abortions. I can't imagine having to give birth to my uncle's child.
I'm really glad that Yago is feeling remorse for his part in what happened to Luzma. If he wants to have a relationship with Natalia, I need him to be remorseful. I wonder what will come of Nana knowing about his plotting with bratgirl.

And also since I'm the only one here entertaining myself, I will mention once again how cute our galan is and how much I lurv him. Go DdlF!
Always the same in these TN's. Douches like Bruno can just walk in like he owns the place and spread lies like manure. In this case though, finally, it appears Camila doesn't buy his act.

Hi Folks!
Just a couple of thoughts as we await the traditionally awesome Friday recap!
* I like Rodolfo!!!
* I know that some don't like D'Andres' tattoo, but I think that it's fitting. I seem to remember that he was into fitness, and just seemed like a cool and trendy guy when he was married to Miriam, and it doesn't seem out of character to me.
* Now hand-sanitizing, nail-biting Alonso on the other hand ... that tattoo revelation was just disturbingly shocking.
I am a sucker for watching men in love. And I think that Cristian is doing a great job of showing that D'Andres is a man in love ... deep LOOOOOOOVVVEEEEE, and that he just can't help himself. He's impulsive, wants to be with Camila all of the time, is "intoxicated" by her, looks out for her interests, wants the best for her, etc.
*I'm liking that Pablo is making sure that his mama knows that he's not her Pablito anymore.
* I like Yago. He seems to have a heart. I was concerned when he seemed to be connecting to bratgirl.
* Bruno at LaMal ... he's a bad liar. Camila should see right through that. And ewwwww ... did Bruno tell Xi how beautiful Camila is? I thought that I heard some "hermosa" comments from him with respect to Camila.

* Agree that (UGH!) tio (UGH!) should remain sin nombre!! (per one of the re-cappers)

* I love the idea of theme music attached to individual characters, couples, and particular scenes. It helps the story to flow very nicely.

I'm so happy I found your blog!! I've had the same reactions about the pregancy - it was predictable but still couldn't help but scream at the tv and the writers for doing that to her. Keep up the great work!

Netgirl- Love your comments and so agree with all of them. I also enjoy that each couple has a different and distinct love theme. It was the same in CME. They also choose really good songs that fit the couples and their circumstances perfectly.
I also really enjoyed the montage of Luzma and Pablo's courtship. It was so sad to see how both of their hearts are breaking. I know many find teen/youth love stories in tns tiresome, but I have liked these two from the start, and am pulling even harder for them to get through this trauma. I'm also glad that Pablo continues to prove he is a MAN and stands up to his parents.

I am applauding the writers for laying all the choices that Luzma has out on the line, and having many people defend Luzma's right to have an abortion if she so chooses. Loved the doc correcting Piedad's thinking about the baby being "dirty" and also telling her to butt out and let Luzma make her own decision. Piedad means well, but she is also very traditional/conservative, and frankly ignorant about many things (note, I do not believe the two things are equal). It's very good that Luzma has Camila around to support and advise her, and to give her all the facts so that she can make her own decisions.
Jardinera- I also had to fan myself when D'Andres stripped before getting into bed to cuddle Cami. And he did look VERY good in that charro suit when he tried to sneak kisses with Cami before his "suegra" returned. I like this couple more each day.

You did a great job on this very difficult subject with all the technical aspects of the rape and decisions needed to be laid out and made over Luzma's choices. I had a hard time following it so your recap made it all make sense.
But one thing I'm not clear on is that if she has to wait 3 months to be able to do a DNA test, but she can't have an abortion after the fetus is 3 months? Is that correct? Is the decision that she either has an abortion and not know who the father is versus not have an abortion but be able to prove Leo raped her?

If this were a Law & Order SVU episode she could have an abortion now and the "products of conception" could be analyzed. However, I don't recall any such discussion in a novela.
DNA tests aren't like blood type tests, either. They take time from start to results. Most television programs give the impression that they can get results in minutes.

The timing for when the DNA can first be done, and when the abortion can last be done seems to have been purposely manipulated by the lawmakers to discourage the woman from having the abortion because the window is so tight to be able to be able to do both the test and the abortion.
I understand that they don't want to do the DNA test any earlier on the fetus in utero because it could harm the developing fetus if the mother wanted to go full term. But it also seems that they won't do the DNA test on an aborted fetus (since that wasn't given as an option), hence the woman can't just go ahead and have an abortion before the 12 week wait period for the DNA test is complete. Bastards! Luzma would have to do the test, and then immediately have an abortion. Just traumatic all around.

Thanks for the recap Jardinera and taking one for the team. You were slimed in having to comment/describe the tio plot. While TNs have many off-the-top moments along with murder, beatings,etc., rape stories for me break the illusion of fantasy/make-believe. Adding the pregnancy to this, rackets up the horrible.
Thankfully I could oogle at Dan jumping into bed w/Cam and laugh at Rodolfo's reaction to his promotion.

Like others, I liked the sensitivity of the doctor, the realistic discussion of genetic possibilities, and the point that any further action is Luzma's choice. Good acting all around.
Piedad's sadness and shame were very beautifully portrayed. Way too realistic in some ways, but certainly what way too many families suffer.
It will be very interesting to see where this goes; the novela-god-induced miscarriage would be something of a blessing at this point.

Rudolfo is handsomer and far more honorable than Iago. I hope this actor gets "promoted" in a future novela; maybe to younger brother of Pablo Montero.

Though I'm not familiar with Mexican law I can speak to the available medical alternatives. Of course, if a D&C is performed at any time after implantation, paternity can be determined from the curettings. These days, after approximately 9 weeks, paternity can be determined from a blood sample from the mother.
For me, in this situation, since Luzma was a virgin and Tio Leo is the rapist, a logical choice would be a D&C. I can't imagine why that could not be used as evidence to prove paternity. Of course, often different rules apply in Telenovelandia.

And here I go again. The Amanda and baby picture that Dio looked at was in a frame. Not sure if he wants to find them because he's angry or because he's sad they're gone. Probably angry.
Most of the stuff I'm finding online also says 12 weeks for the paternity determination. Perhaps the small county/town that they're in doesn't have the latest tests that can determine paternity at 9 weeks?
We couldn't tell, it looked to be even in black and white. The detail wasn't there, we just knew it was of Amanda and Natalia as a baby before they left him.

Granted, the none-too-swift Piedad might never have come up with the idea on her own, but it still seemed a clunky handling of that plot element. Up til now, the writers have handled the plot quite skillfully. Perhaps that's why this departure stood out for me.

I wonder what Jarocha could add to help us understand the legal why's and wherefore's in Mexican law with this topic. The next three months are going to be a living nightmare for Luzma. Every time she gets hit with morning sickness she'll be reminded of the rape and cursing that scumsucker and the legal system for having to continue this nightmare.

Juanita- I agree that it was a bit of a stretch for Dorotea to come up with that all on her own. But they have shown her to be observant and her face always looks like there's a lot going on in her head (unlike Peidad or Gussy). It's also nice to that they are showing a humble maid character as having intellect and sharp instincts. Plus, she Arturo Peniche's daughter! :)

Just rain so far. They are predicting things will get intense this afternoon for quite a long period. The problem with the DC Metro area is that our trees always go down in droves which knocks power out for days at a time. That's what I'm hoping doesn't happen but it's almost inevitable.
Just stay in and stay safe. My computer will be on all day, as usual.

Thanks for your reply about Dorotea (whose name I'm not sure I ever knew). ITA with what you said, both that she does look as if her brain switch is set on ON, unlike Gussie and Piedad, and that it's good to see a humble maid character having real smarts. But your last point (hija de Arturo Peniche) was the most compelling. I LOVE him, and any daughter of his has got to be both savvy and compassionate.

Juanita - not sure if you watched El Tal. We hated it so much that we loved it. There was a maid, Tracy, who was the only one with any brains. Her character was very endearing. See loved to say "O.M.G." which was just hilarious coming in between Spanish words.
Anita - stay cozy. Sounds like you're settled in. Just so you have your book, flashlight, batteries and thermos filled with warm Mexican Chiapas, you'll be fine. Wish I was on your Christmas list if you are giving out homemade fig jelly! Sounds delish.

I just got home from work (they let us out early). The wind has picked up here in western MA but with only drizzle. I'm about to make my tea while I still have power and hunker down with a good book.

The rain has begun. A turkey sandwich, grape tomatoes, and a pickle have just given way to Wise potato chips. I'm about to upload Halloween photos to my photobucket account. My doctor's appointment for tomorrow has been cancelled. Can't go anywhere.

Sue455 - I so totally agree. I had decided I would not watch anymore if Luzma was pregnant, but then I read this recap and am desperate to know what Luz is going to do. I think seeing Leo get beaten up helped, and Pablo's unconditional support, bless his heart. If we had to watch Leo keep walking around, leering at Luz, I don't think I could handle it. Who knows though? They may release him. Let's hope he is not allowed back on the ranch.

Vivi: The whole taking the shirt off thing doesn't do anything for me--I'm not into buff. However, the last scene I saw them together before all hell broke loose re: Luz, they were very cute together. I'll probably do what I did with Lumi--once the worst was over, I went back and watched those eps.

It's just so hard to digest. I didn't watch Friday's episode until yesterday. I still can't believe they did that to Luzma and us.

I'm trying to finish reading a biography on Alger Hiss, by John Chabot Smith that has been sitting around for a couple of decades. For you younger folks, he was one of the first casualties of the Communist Red Scare in the 1940s and 50s. Guess who was one of the most ardent defenders of his accuser, Whittaker Chambers--Richard Nixon, in one of his first committee assignments (HUAC) as a freshman Congressman.
Mena. Fig jam is probably the easiest thing in the world to fix, although it is, like with most fruit, labor intensive and loaded with sugar. My fig chutney is enviable, too.
I usually make two batches at a time, but each batch in a separate pot--easier to handle.
For each batch, start with 4 - 4 1/2 c. fresh, clean, dry, quartered figs, ripe and some unripe (for me it is one or two days picking--they keep in the fridge nicely)
1/2 c. to 3/4 c. water
2 - 3 c. sugar (sorry, but white cane sugar is what I use)
2 - 3 tbs. fresh lemon juice.
Put the figs in a heavy pot with the water and start to heat it. Add the sugar and stir until completely dissolved. Bring to a hearty boil and then reduce heat to a simmer. As it begins to foam, spoon off the foam and the seeds (which seem to congregate along the edge of the pot--it's not necessary to get every single seed). Continue to do this, watching the pot frequently until it's all clear, then cook it down to your favorite viscosity--about 30-55 min. There's no need to hurry this part. Then put in jam jars and seal.

He said he couldn't call it a real autobiography and he couldn't call it a memoir. The name he chose for the title was the alias he used during the period he was in hiding (but of course you would know that by now).

It was not an apology for Hiss. Unfortunately, at the time, there was no good forensic evidence that could have vindicated him contemporaneously. I got interested because I started reading his son Tony's memoir and realized I didn't know enough about the Hiss case. Good, straightforward reporting.
