66: Check and Checkmate
Lo

Mariano
escorts Camila to the hospital cafeteria and comments on how she
cares about her employees. She confides in him that she is in love
with Andres and that they are in a relationship.

Cafeteria: Camila asks Mariano to keep this to himself.
Mariano is clearly disappointed although he doesn't tell her. He
just hopes that she doesn't get hurt again. She explains that she
is happy with Andres. Instead he tells her that he hopes Andres is a
good man and deserving of her love. She tells him that if he knew
him he'd see what a marvelous person he is and she considers herself
fortunate to have him, also telling him she is fortunate to have him
as a friend. She hopes he will soon find happiness in love. He says
that this is a question of luck.
Hostal,
Aaron's Room: Rafael and Viviana update Aaron and she praises
Rafael's quick thinking. We get a flashback to Rafael calling Aaron
to put the right words in his mouth to throw El Diablo off the scent. She is sure that they have El Diablo where they want him for the moment. She then explains that Camila is not well because she is so worried
about Daniel.
El
Diablo's Lair: The Lord of Darkness is verbally rebuking his
errant minion, who is being held between two henchmen of trust. Omar
watches from another corner as he lets him know he was not pleased at
the events of the past evening. He was not to kill Andres and El
Diablo accuses him of wanting to for his own reasons. Leoncerdo
tries but can't lie his way out of this. “It was their lives or
mine,” he says. El Diablo informs him that his life is now more in
danger because not only are both his victims alive to bring charges
against him, there were other witnesses and the police are now
looking for him. Furthermore, he will not soil his hands on him.
Leoncerdo begs for help that El Diablo is not inclined to give. “You
can't stay here; you have to go,” says he. After more begging
from the pawn Pig El Diablo tells him he will have
his men bring him to a house in the woods where nobody will find him.
From there he will find a way to bring him to another part of the
country where he can continue to work for him. Leoncerdo looks
stupid enough to believe this, thanking him. “You are now in debt
to me,” says El Diablo. “You owe me your life and your liberty.”
Leoncerdo kneels to grovel that he will do anything asked of him.
“I am your slave.” The two henchmen seize his arms and hold them
back, also forcing his shoulders down, as though forcing him to kneel
for the executioner's axe. “You now owe me your complete loyalty.”
At another groveling statement of his servitude, El Diablo informs
Leoncerdo that he will not get another chance. [If that means what he implies, he'd be performing a public service.]
Hospital:
Mariano goes to check up on Pablo, leaving Camila to wait in
the reception area. However – to the sound of high staccato
violins – she sneaks into the adjoining corridor where she is
spotted by a nurse in blue scrubs. She asks to see Andres and is
told that he can't have visitors. However, our plucky and
resourceful Camila pretends to leave, watches the nurse walk away,
and grabs a surgical mask. She sneaks into Andres' room. To the
sound of a love song she tries to talk to him to get him to wake up,
finally kissing his forehead through the surgical mask. The nurse
quickly returns and tells her to leave. He can't hear her and he
can't have visitors. She threatens to call security and have her
removed and banned from the hospital. Camila apologises and quickly
departs after telling the unconscious Andres she will be back
tomorrow. The song in the
background ends on “Tu es el hombre mas hermoso en el mundo”.
We agree.
The
following morning
Hospital
Waiting Room: Camila slept on the couch all night with
Mariano's jacket draped over her. Mariano enters with a cup of
coffee for her. He is also in the same clothes as the day before so
he was also there all night. He tells her that he asked the doctors
for a report and was told that Andres is stable and she can go in to
see him. She thanks him profusely. A different nurse escorts her to
his room as we see a disappointed expression on Mariano's face.
La
Malquerida, Master Bedroom: Augustina wakes up and sees she is
alone in the king-sized bed. Piedad knocks and asks to come in.
Augustina messes up El Diablo's side of the bed and tells her to come
in. She enters with the breakfast tray and Augustina tells her that
El Señor had to go out early,
almost at dawn; he had things to do. Piedad says she isn't sure what
to do about breakfast for the girls because neither of them came home
last night. Camila's car is not outside. Augustina is not going to
have a good day and she already knows it. Piedad speculates that
Camila is at the hospital but what about Ximeana? She looked into
her room and there is nothing there; her suitcases and clothing are
gone.
Temporary
Dragon Lair, Alonso's Room: Ximeana is doing the octopus around
Komodo Jr as Hissadora pounds on the locked door demanding to be
admitted. “It's urgent!” We almost pity him as he puts on his
robe and opens the door, carefully stepping outside the room.
Hissadora is dressed and ready for business, ordering him to dress
and come with her to meet with El Diablo. He doesn't want to but
she's not having this. She tells him that Daniel Diaz Acosta has
contacted El Diablo and has blackmailed him. Get dressed now!
Ximeana eavesdrops to the degree she can; we're not sure how much she
heard as Alonssso comes back in and dresses. She punches the pillow
in frustration.
Hostal/Hotel
in Metepec: Francisco calls Aaron to tell him he has the
documents for him to sign. Aaron tells him it isn't convenient at
this precise moment. Francisco asks for a meeting and Aaron suggests
that he leave the envelope at the reception desk at the hostal and he
will sign them at his convenience and have them delivered to him.
Francisco starts the “I want to make up for lost time” song that
Aaron isn't willing to listen to. Aaron tells him “We'll see after
I sign” and hangs up. Francisco hangs up and laughs. We can't
quite believe that he could be Daniel's sperm donor.
Hospital,
Pablo's Room: Mariano arrives to find his mother there.
He tells her he brought her coffee. Pablo is awake, asking “You
were here all night, too?” only to get a passive/aggressive answer
from Mama Snob who comments that while he was supposed to be staying
there with her he was mostly staying with Camila. Pablo asks about
Andres and Mariano tells him that Andres is alive but was hurt worse
than he was. Mama Snob wastes no time asking Pablo what the hell he
was doing with “that chauffeur” and why Leoncerdo shot the two of
them. Pablo explains that he had come to talk to the priest and saw
that someone was attacking Andres and he went into help. The flashback shows Pablo attacking
Leoncerdo from behind, knocking him down. He saw the pistol too
late. Leoncerdo shot him. Rocio tells him not to lie (ay, Dios
mio!) because she is sure that Luzma was somehow involved.
Cayetano's arrival prevents this from getting any worse. His lawyer
is outside along with officials who need to take his statement.
Hospital,
Daniel's Room: Camila enters in full scrubs, telling him (same
song in the background) that she was there all night. He is still
unconscious but she keeps telling him to get well. She loves him and
is waiting for him. She kisses his forehead through the surgical
mask. The same song in the same annoying female voice ends the
scene.
Hospital,
Pablo's Room: Pablo explains what happened to the commandante
while a clerk takes it down on a laptop. He includes information
about Leoncerdo's previous threats against him and tells them that he
wants to see this man end up in prison for the rest of his life.
Cayetano swears he will see that this man never hurts his son again.
Road:
There is a police roadblock and El Diablo's men drive right into it while telling Leoncerdo to shut up.
The police look in the trunk while Leoncerdo crouches in the back
seat below window level. They actually get through because the police must have been looking for something else; they never bothered to check the back seat of the car.
Viviana's
Apartment: Neither were able to sleep the night before. Aaron
calls to update them but doesn't know what to do next. Rafael tells
him he will go to see Becerra.
Hostal:
Natalia tells her mother about her conversation with El Diablo in the hospital,
including the job offer. Amanda tells her in no uncertain terms she
is to have nothing to do with him. She is so emphatic Natalia
finally relents, promising she won't. However, we know the devil
never gives up.
La
Malquerida, Cocina: Piedad and Dorotea prepare tostadas for
Rodolfo and another vaquero while speculating as to why Camila might
still be at the hospital. Luzma enters and is told that Camila
wanted her to call her. She goes to the phone but hesitates when she
hears the men talking about how Camila seems to favor Andres. Luzma
scolds them with the reminder that Andres helped her when she needed
him to and they stop. All stop to eat.
Hospital:
Viviana joins Camila there and speculates on whether Mariano is in
love with Camila. Camila answers she doesn't know whether he is or
not but she told him about her relationship with Andres. Just as
they're about to discuss this the commandante arrives to talk to
Camila.
He needs
some official ID of Andres' for the case; he didn't have any with
him. She tells him she will check his room and bring it to him as
soon as she finds it. The anvil is poised.
Becerra's
Office: Rafael arrives to inform him of the arrival of the
documents that will not be legally valid. Becerra is almost amused
at the level of corruption involved. Rafael explains his concerns
about the identity revelation and what they have done so far. The
game has been played intelligently but they need to buy as much time
as they can.
Hospital:
Camila and Viviana sit on the blue divan talking as Mariano
returns telling them that Pablo is alright. Mariano offers to take
her back to La Malquerida. As they leave Viviana starts worrying
about Daniel's lack of ID.
Hospital;
Pablo's Room: Refugio arrives to visit, telling Rocio she
should go back to the ranch to bathe and rest. Rocio is upset she didn't bring the things she asked for as doesn't want to
leave her son. Refugio didn't bring fresh clothes on purpose and insists she go home to rest, bathe, and have a proper breakfast while she stays with Pablo. "What, you don't trust me with your son?" Rocio finally relents, saying that
Cayetano will later make Pablo leave the country to study so he will
be out of danger. Refugio asks whether she really thinks that Pablo
will obey as though he were five years old. Rocio is sure because
it's for his own good. [Actually, Madame, the only good will be
for you, in your mind]. Refugio is not convinced, but Rocio
swears she will make sure of it.
La
Malquerida, Courtyard: Camila and Mariano take leave of each
other and we see that he is disappointed yet again that she will ask
one of her workers to drive her back later. Rodolfo and the other
workers arrive to ask about Andres and she updates them on his
condition. Some talk about the stock before she goes into the
hacienda.
La
Buenaventura: Natalia arrives to find Yago waiting for her;
Mariano arrives shortly thereafter, explaining that Pablo had given a
statement to the police. Leoncerdo didn't shoot him intentionally
(at least not with premeditation) but because he came to help Andres.
Yago is annoyed until he explains that this is no less a crime and
Leoncerdo will go to prison for this. Mariano asks about his father
and is informed that he is not in at the moment; he had a meeting
with a lawyer. Mariano then announces he's going to bathe, rest, and
return to the hospital. He enters the hacienda. Natalia wants to go
to La Malquerida to see Luzma. Some flirtatious vibes end in a kiss
to an upbeat pop song.
Hospital:
Rafael arrives to meet with Viviana who tells him about the
commandante looking for Andres' ID which – as we all know – he
does not possess. Camila had gone back to the ranch to look through
his things for it. She is getting nervous about this.
La
Malquerida: Camila searches through Andres' room and in the
desk drawer finds the photo of Daniel and Miriam. After swearing
that he has to get well she accidentally turns on the laptop to see
Rafael's name as the last user.
El
Diablo's Lair: He paces back and forth in front of the Komodos
telling them that he was threatened with prison if Andres doesn't
survive. Alonssso says that they're alright for the moment because
Leoncerdo didn't succeed in killing Andres. And where is he, anyway?
El Diablo tries to assure them that he will not return. Hissadora
is not reassured; he is still a security leak. Ximeana arrives
despite Omar's effort to restrain her. She marches in telling them
she will not be excluded from this matter or she will tell her mother
and sister everything. All stare incredulously. As do we, at her
stupidity.
Avances
Francisco shows his face to Camila, attempting to claim Daniel's inheritance while Hissadora spits venom.

UA - I am having trouble unwinding and was thrilled to see your recap up. It was delish from the beginning (Check and Checkmate) through the middle (the same song in the same annoying female voice ends the scene) to the ending (As do we, at her stupidity).

Thanks as always for your very speedy recaps. Loved the phrase Lord of Darkness rebuking his errant minion. If he does so more than verbally, I doubt there will be anything but cheers from Viewerville.

Great work Urban! This episode has lined up quite a few anvils. Looks like the Fransico Xavier (FX) anvil drops on the rancho tonight. That should be interesting!
I was impressed that Cami didn't immediately get jealous when she found a pic of Andres with a mystery woman in his desk. This is a girl secure in her man's love. But Rafa will have to explain to Cami why Andres has his laptop, since D'Andres isn't awake to tell her. Hope Rafa's good at coming up with lies on the spot.

When she heard that neither daughter slept at the ranch the night before, the glimmer of insight that she had lost control in every part of her life was so well portrayed.
Luzma looks more mature and lovely in every scene and is clearly taking control of her life. That part of the disgusting Leo-rape story has been good.

Traveling Lady- I so loved that scene where Luzma laid down the law to sqaush the Andres-Cami rumors before they spread amongst the ranch staff. She has matured a lot over the course of this tn.
Many thanks, UA, for another prompt and delightful recap. I must say, I love this TN but I don't like where it's going. It seems highly likely that Camila will turn to Mariano once she discovers that "Andres" has not been truthful with her (and, indeed, that her friends haven't levelled with her, either). And this is likely to send Mariano's hopes sky high, and thus to make his ultimate disappointment all the more painful. I don't want to see that happen! He's much too nice a guy. (And Rene Strickler is doing a superb job in conveying Mariano's emotions without overacting.)
On the whole, this TN is avoiding some of the most annoying TN cliches, but I guess there are some it must include. One is certainly the relative ease with which people can have access to seriously injured patients. If Camila can do it, so too could, say, Hissadora. Another cliche is the incompetence of the police. How could they be stopping cars and not look in the back seat?
I see the avances played with us again. The paper that Camila found in Andres's room was not something letting her know that he is Daniel but merely a photo of him with Miriam. Juanita- The pic was one of the pics Don Daniel's P.I. took of Daniel. It was originally with the letter Padre B. gave Daniel, which Becerra now has.

Thanks for an excellent recap with your usual enlightening detail. You brought up something that I apparently misunderstood in a prior episode. During the conversation between Francisco and D'Aaron, I didn't realize that Francisco had presented Isadora's plan about faking the documents to D'Aaron. So, I was surprised when you wrote that D'Aaron told Francisco to leave the documents at the desk for him to sign.
I remember when Isadora gave Francisco the documents. But at the time I erronously assumed that after talking with D'Aaron, Francisco said "I'm gonna be rich", that implied that he no longer needed Isa. My confusion is why does Francisco think he still needs Isa? And why does D'Aaron think he's signing the documents?

Francisco didn't see Hissadora's crooked legal eagle. That's why Francisco still needs her.
As to the photo, it was a cell phone photo taken by a private eye employed by Don Daniel. He would have printed it and included it in the envelope he gave to Padre Baldomero.

My favorite scene was another SN ad lib. When her purse got stuck on the hospital door she said to the nurse "Ve? Ni siquiera se quiere ir mi bolsa". See? Not even my purse wants to leave.
My second favorite scene was the way the ranch hands all came running up to Camila when she arrived home for word of D'Andres. She seems touched by their concern. Rodolfo loved being left in charge.
They shortchanged us on what may have been an entertaining (in a sad way) scene when Dio decided to sleep at his place. Last we he and Auggie were leaving the hospital and he was peeved Camila was staying. Did he tell Auggie to catch a cab outside the hospital? Did he dump her on the road again? Did they get back to the ranch and she kept yammering in his ear til he abruptly left?

Oh, that's right, Vivi. It *was* after Camila said she wasn't coming home and they were driving back to the ranch that Dio booted her. Seemed episodes ago!

Thanks UA, but I have a question about something that I don't understand. Why does Isadora think that Dan's father can get Dan to give him POA? Does she think they have a close relationship and Dan would sign of the POA to his father if something were to happen to him? And, what reason did Dan (Aaron) give to agree to do it? This part makes no sense to me.
Cathyx- Isa thinks that FX's sob story about dying and wanting to make amends will make Dan trust him. They know Dan is a fugitive from the law, so he needs the help of someone legit to claim the inheritance for him. Who better than his own, dying father who wants to reconnect and help his son? Basically, Isa believes Dan is a sentimental idiot who would fall for the lies of his dead beat dad because he's desperate and wants to connect with his long-lost father.
I'm in the minority here, but I don't like Mariano. He's just too perfect for my taste and he lets everyone know it. He's so understanding; he doesn't lie .... He's exactly like Marina in CME.
It's very surprising to me that the majority of the Univision/Caray viewers (or at least the viewers that comment here) love/sympathize with him. I recall during the Mexican viewing, the majority of the online audience hated the guy ... even at the stage of the show.
Augustina deserves everything that Dio dishes out to her because she is just too stupid for her own good. Any sane woman that goes through an unpleasant marriage in her lifetime; learns to be wary; mistrusting of men. But not our dear beguiled Augustina; not only she brings a sexual deviant in her daughter's home but she has the nerve to choose her man over her own flesh and bone; to me that's just unforgivable.

I don't think Cam will make the mistake of taking up with Mariano, romantically when she and Dan have their break up (you know it's got to be coming--TN law :). She's a smart heroine. She won't make that mistake twice (from Luis--someone she truly loved to Alonso--someone she just cared for).
Didn't see the entire ep, yet. Looking forward to seeing Luzma's scene. She's my favorite character in this TN.

Myo, Your comment left me pondering about the character of Agustina. Other comment have said the same thing about her weakness re: men and the risk she introduces to her family by her poor judgement. You make a very solid point. The writers have diluted this point a little by her Daffy Senora character and the fact that her daughters are adults (even though the Javier character presumably was around X when she was born for a short while).
Re: the Mariano character ... LOL... too perfect! That is true so maybe that is why they have his character flaw playing out in his unpopular wardrobe.

The whole craziness about the POA is that it isn't legal and Francisco isn't smart enough to know that. That lawyer could be disbarred for this little move... and he should be.

While I'm hoping that that is true, my friend who also watches (but who can't get by the robot to comment), said that the 2 shared a romantic looking kiss in the comming attractions. attractions. Hope that's another of the writer's "gotcha".

I think he is. It's not hard to see why Ximeana is the way she is. That must mean that Agatha was a really good person to have Daniel turn out as he has.
UA--Couldn't comment before this--busy doing Refugio's recap with a revised, one-day-less-to-do-it-in schedule. I sure hope you don't run out of fans. I love watching for them on Monday nights. This was a good episode--plenty of time to decipher and savor long scenes. You did it justice.
