Amores Verdaderos #48 Wed 1/16/13: And someone's been sleeping in my bed!

Esta noche Nelson Brizz mató todo lo bueno que yo sentía por él.
(Tonight Nelson Brizz killed everything good that I felt for him.)
Victoria weeps and Arriaga tries to comfort and reassure his señora
[At home we wring our hands and scream at our televisions:  Get out of that damned apartment!]

"Me puedes pedir lo que sea." (You can ask anything of me.)
Francisco and Nikki turn towards one another in their shared bed. Their expressions soften.  They exchange a shy caress, a tentative kiss.  The theme song swells as they embrace. Francisco pulls away abruptly and jumps out of the bed. But Nikki follows him, pulls off his shirt...

Todo se derrumbó, Arriaga
(Everything has been destroyed, Arriaga.)
Victoria isn't comforted at the thought that her husband was having a meaningless roll in the hay (or, in this case, on the desk).  To her, making love is a sublime act; she could never be with someone she didn't love.  And José Ángel can only agree. [Sigh.]

Where were you when the lights went on?
Back at the hacienda, things are getting very very hot.  The music is still playing, and Francisco and Nikki are still in one another's arms when ... scriiiiiiiiitch.  The lights come on, the music stops, and the spell is broken.  Now it's Nikki's turn to jump up while Francisco apologizes for what has just happened, or rather for what almost happened.  Nikki gathers up her slippers and switches back to full fresa mode -- This never happened, ¿captas?  (You get it?) She flounces out of the room leaving Francisco alone, bereft.

We are begging you -- get out of the damned apartment!
Not only does Arriaga insist on Victoria staying, he persuades her to sleep in the master bedroom.  His marriage bed.  [Really, dude?]  Arriaga will call the Casa Balvanera so they won't worry about her.

Sleepless in Santa Rita
Francisco has wandered outside and Nikki, now wearing an open robe over her skivvies, joins him.  Neither one can sleep.  She cuts off his attempt to apologize again by mocking the idea of the two of them as a couple. All they shared was a "beso equis" (a meaningless kiss).  She wants to go back to the city tomorrow.  Her mother sent her here to think about her future.  Her thinking is done and he's not part of that future.  [Ouch.]

Victoria still feels bad about sleeping in Arriaga's own bed [¡Con razón! we chime in at home.] As they are making the bed together, Victoria remarks that if Nelson had the gall to bring that redhead to the office, what else might he have been up to?  Arriaga's ears prick up.  "A redhead? So she didn't catch him with Kendra?"

Casa Balvanera is uneasy tonight.
Tomasina takes José Ángel's call and passes along the message: Victoria won't be home tonight.  Nelson has the nerve to be incensed.

Adriana's godfather, Antonio, brings her camera and luggage to her hotel room.  When the Paxil Poster Child tells him she's going to Santa Rita in the morning to request an exhumation order, he offers her his driver.  She asks about her father and "that woman" and seems to be pleased when Antonio says it appears they are separated.

In another part of the city "that woman", the life-sucking, perennially damp Paula, is enjoying a rare moment of affection and intimacy with her daughter, Beatriz.  Beatriz takes advantage of the fact that her mother isn't crying or screaming and asks if she isn't even a little interested in a reconciliation with her father.  Paula walks away without answering.

After he leaves Adriana's hotel room, Antonio has a car phone conversation with his old friend, Aníbal.  Antonio calls Aníbal's bluff about Paula: he knows the real reason he refuses to marry her -- he can't forget the only woman he ever loved, Candelaria Corona.  Aníbal doesn't want to discuss it so Antonio changes the subject: Adriana is back in Mexico.  What is he going to do about it?  Nothing, says her father, since she clearly doesn't want to be found.  A buen entendador, pocas palabras, he says. (For a good listener, few words are needed.)

We cut back to the hacienda where a despondent Francisco sits on the floor and replays Nikki's cutting and casual dismissal: "En buena onda, tú no estás incluido en este futuro." (No offense but you're not included in that future.) He doesn't get it -- why does she kiss him as if she loved him and then act like that. Why, Nikki?  Why?

Oh oh, I know, Guzmán, I know ...
We see images of their earlier tender moments.  Suddenly we realize we've moved from Francisco's waking mind to Nikki's dreams.  A woman bursts in
-- we only see her in shadow -- and we hear her reproachful voice: "Francisco, why are you with another woman when you're married to me?" (Aha, that's why Nikki pushes him away!) Nikki wakes up gasping for breath.  "It was only a dream", she tells herself.  "But it's not a dream that Guzman is married".

Sleepless in el DF
Victoria lies awake and tearful in Arriaga's marriage bed.  She is haunted by the image of Nelson and the pelirroja.  "Basta Nelson Brizz," she tells herself.  "No mereces ni una sola de mis lágrimas". (That's enough, NB, you're not worth a single tear of mine.)

And Arriaga stands outside the bedroom and curses Nelson for betraying la señora: It's not enough that he's cheating with Kendra -- now he's got a redhead in his office!

The next morning
Guzman and Nikki are on the road, heading straight to the office.  She has made a decision that will be good for both of them, she tells him cryptically.

La Comandancia, Santa Rita, Amatlán, Morelos
Lili gets that bad feeling in her gut, "el hoyo en la boca del estómago" and worries that her father is in danger. "Márcale" (Call him!) shouts Cris with her trademark lightning change of affect -- a moment ago she was mellow as a cello -- and she grabs the phone from Lili.  Fortunately Arriaga answers right away and tells her all is well.

While Cristina is talking, she bumps right into Adriana, who has just arrived.  The two women look at one another intently.  ["El llamado de la sangre", stage-whispers someone in the crowd.] Then Adriana goes to the desk and explains her business to the clerk.

Meanwhile the Comandante has just walked in.  Cristina passes the phone to him so he can talk to Arriaga.  Has JA found out what happened to the person who was responsible for burning his house down?  Unfortunately not -- when he got to the city, he found out the bastard had fled the country.

At Casa Balvanera, Nelson is still complaining but doesn't seem especially worried that Victoria hasn't answered his messages.  Aníbal snaps at Nelson for not telling him about Victoria's absence.  So Nelson snaps at Tomasina.  [I wouldn't want to be Polita right now.]

Apartment 904 -- For the love of all that is holy, get out!
Victoria can't stand the idea of going back to Nelsonville so she asks Arriaga to go to her friend Jocelyn's and pick up some things (like eye makeup remover, say)she needs.  She is reassured when Arriaga says he just talked to Cristina and she will be busy in Santa Rita for several hours more.  In the meantime, Victoria can go lie down and listen to some relaxing music. [Noooooooo!]

Beauty Tips or Vive l'amour
Over breakfast, Salsero asks Jean Marie for some advice on improving his appearance.  "Shampoo for oily hair" answers JM unflinchingly, "and an appointment with a stylist."  But who is he trying to impress?  "¿Me vas a dejar en ascuas, Salsero?" (Are you going to leave me in suspense?)
"Beatriz, her name is Beatriz", he answers dreamily.

Apartment 904 Revisited
Victoria, still looking grief-stricken, straightens the bed, turns on the music in the stereo, and lies down on the bed.  [Don't they read "Goldilocks and the Three Bears" in Mexico?]

Beatriz has spent the night in Paula's apartment.  Now she needs to get ready for work so she is heading back to the Arriaga apartment.  She presses Paula to accompany her since the plot demands that an enemy find Victoria there.

Once inside, the women are surprised to hear music playing. They know Cris and Lili are away and they figure Arriaga is at work.  Cristina must have forgotten to turn off the stereo before she left.  While Beatriz heads to her room to get dressed, Paula follows the music into the master bedroom.  Oh no! She sees Victoria.

Paula purses her lips with malicious satisfaction.  A moment later, Beatriz joins her.  Paula shrugs and gestures silently that they should leave.

Nikki arrives at Meta Imagen excited about giving her mother her news.  Since her mom isn't handy, she tries to tell her dad.  But Nelson has to run off to his meeting.  Only Francisco is left.  And he really wants to know:  What has she decided to do that will be beneficial to the two of them?  "Cheer up, Frankie," she says.  "You're finally going to get rid of me.  I'm going to live in Europe."  Francisco is silent.  Does he flinch slightly?

Overly moist and life-sucking Paula is flying high.  Now she knows exactly what kind of woman Victoria is.  Hah! Aníbal's pride and joy, "una mujer intachable, integra -- y mira con lo que sale ahora!" (a woman beyond reproach, honest -- and look at what she's pulling now!).  Beatriz tries to rein her in,  reminding her that they don't know why Victoria was there.  Besides, she does own the apartment.  But Paula is determined to tell Cristina what she saw; after all, it would be a betrayal of their friendship if she kept silent.  [B*tch, please.]  When Bea leaves for work, Paula gloats:
"Me gustaría ver la cara de Aníbal cuando se entere que su hija perfecta es una descarada sinverguenza."
(I'd like to see Anibal's face when he finds out that his perfect daughter is a shameless hussy.)

Oblivious to the hurricane that is now bearing down on them, Arriaga returns and wakens Victoria from her ill-timed doze.  He has brought the things she asked her friend for -- they're not her favorite colors but they're cheerful.  Wear them for today, Arriaga urges her. [Ay.  There'll be plenty of time for black.]

Not exactly a welcoming committee for Beatriz
Gilda is borderline snippy to Beatriz when she arrives at the office.  Victoria isn't in and Gilda was unaware Beatriz had been given permission to come in late.  Now Bea turns around and sees Francisco glaring at her.  What is she doing there?  "I work here," she answers. He wants her to go back to Cristina's place and tries to push her towards the elevator.  She resists.   Their argument is getting heated and people are starting to notice.  Suddenly Salsero, that swivel-hipped, oily-locked Lancelot, lunges toward Francisco and grabs him in an headlock from which Francisco easily breaks free.  "Touch her again and I'll kill you," growls Salsero.

Avances:  Paula spills the beans (actually la sopa) to Cristina.  Victoria throws Nelson's accusations right back at him.  Whatever she did last night was nothing compared to what he and that redhead were up to in his office.  She uses the "D" word.

Hi guys! If I got any of the plot details wrong, especially the stuff about the house in Santa Rita, please sing out, okay? ¿Captas? Gracias!

NovelaMaven, what a terrific, fantastic recap this is. I laughed myself silly. Loved your side comments and the screaming at the tv lol. I'm still laughing. Loved the Spanish you incorporated too.

Ayi, yi, yi, poor Ms Vikki, we all know that PauWhiner is so going to whine to Cris. What a b*tch as you put in the recap. PauWhiner really hates Vikki. Adri hates PauWhiner more. I feel sorry for Angel too, he tried to do a nice thing for Ms Vikki and now it will come to bite him in the butt. PauWhiner needs an anvil, like Canderlaria Corona to show up, jus' sayin'.

Frankie and Nikki, I don't know about them. She is just a chameleon. One minute all lovey dovey and the next get outta my face. I don't think her Mama is gonna let her trot off to Europe.

Loved that bumping into Adri that Cris did. They looked like they recognized each other for a sec and Lili never got to see Adri cause she turned her back, so now that begs the question why Lili was having those pains in her tummy usually reserved for her Papa and he wasn't in any danger so what was up with that? Inquiring minds want to know.

NovelaMaven- this recap was absolutely fab and welcome to our team and you got everything right.

Good Job NovelaMaven, I laughed myself silly!

PauWhiner will be a telltale chismosa for sure, I hope they can explan it to Chris before she jumps at their throats.

By the way, can someone explain it to me why PauWhiner hates Viki so much? I mean she cannot be held responsible for Anibal's deeds, did she do something to Pau?

Madelaine - I think, Lili's tummy pains suggest there must be some connection between her and Adri, can she be Lucia? If so, then she has no connection to BigEd whatsoever, so why she feels it for him as well? This just makes no sense..

Elvira, I just posted a comment on your excellent recap of yesterday.

NovelaMaven, I have to start off with my favorites (I'm still chuckling away): "Paxil Poster Child", "mello as a cello", "overly moist" and of course "oily locked Lancelot".

The recap was simply great. You captured all the action perfectly with great humor and affection.

This was a pivotal episode.

I was really starting to route for Paula. She made a terrible mistake by abandoning her children. But, she does love them and maybe she and Francisco (whose broken heart makes mine ache)...can eventually reconcile. But now that we saw her "purse her lips in malicious satisfaction" at what she believes to be Vicky's betrayal, all bets are off.

Madelaine, yes, "El llamado de la sangre" was great fun. I yelled for Lili to turn around but alas she ignored me. Irisz79, I thought Lili's pains were for Adriana, her real mother (?) but as you pointed out, she has sympanthy pains for Angel too which make no sense if he's not her bio dad.

Regarding the Francisco and Bea confrontation: first, Francisco should never have grabbed her (they are in a place of their employment for heavens sakes). He should have waited to talk with Bea rather than manhandling her and getting angry (sorry, doesn't she get enough of that at home!?). Love the way DWS came to her aid. Looks like he's in for a huge surprise finding out Bea and Frankie are sibs...If Frankie isn't happy Bea is working there, wait until he finds out Bea is DWS's salsa partner.

DWS asking Jean Marie for grooming advice was so sweet!

Angel had only the best intentions with the kindest motivations. Now instead of the focus being on Nelson and his betrayal, it will move to the non-existent relationship everyone will think he and Vicky had. Big Angel. Big heart. Big problems. Ack.

NovelaMaven, thanks again!

Diana

NovelaMaven - Great recap. Thanks! Especially because, once again, I could not understand some of the dialog in spite of rewinding a few times. LOVE your title and paragraph headers, too.

We-elll, , , , we in Viewerville all KNEW that it was not going to turn out well when Vikki spent the night at that apartment. A buen entendedor . . . indeed!

Márcale --- how would this translate?

The hand signals and body language communication between Bea & Paula, upon finding Goldilocks in the bed, was so realistic that I was giggling.

I was explaining to the hubby last night, who sat down and watched the Cris/Adri scene, who these women are and …. (dun..dun…dunnnnnn!) …. "la llamada de la sangre." ;o)

Frankie flinched on my TV screen, when Nik told him she's going to Europe. I'm not sure if that news is a blessing or a curse for the old boy.
irisz79 - I interpreted Lili's stomach pains, which have - so far - only occurred when something bad is happening to JA , as a sign regarding not physical danger but relationship. As in, that terribly poor decision to talk Viki into staying overnight at the apartment, and the compost will hit the fan when Cris finds out. JA is sooooo going to be in hot water with Cris and for once, I am with Cris. Vikki can well afford a hotel room and if I understood correctly, she wanted to go to one but JA talked her out of it. (?)

I was also starting to inch my way toward Team Paula until she got that malicious look on her face and suspects The Worst of Vikki.

NovelaMaven- Wonderful recap. We are so lucky to have you join this recap team.

I now firmly believe that Lili is Lucia-- Adri's missing daughter. I interpret her ability to sense when JA is in danger to their very close bond. Her dad is her best friend and they understand each other on a level that she and Cris don't, even though she loves her mama just as much.

I hope Nicki's life plan is more detailed than just "go to Europe." I guess we'll have to wait and see, but the drama of her parent's marriage crisis may stall whatever her plan is.

I am so ticked at Paula, her hypocritical attitude, and what she is about to do. She just HAS to tell Cris about seeing a fully dressed Vicky sleeping ALONE in her bed. But it's convenient for her to not mention that she's intercepted letters from Cris' mother to Anibal which reveal a significant tie between them. Bitch please!

Thank you so much for the refrito and vocabulary! I loved the new expressions and appreciate your adding them. It's possible I heard another, when Beatriz and Paulhorribla were bonding. Beatriz had fallen asleep on the couch and I think she said, upon awakening, "Yo dormi con pierna suelta.' I think that means in English idiom 'I slept like a log". Am I right? Thanks again. I LURRRVED your recap.

irisz79~~~~ Pau hates Vikki because Vikki and Adri have kept Anibal from bringing Pau around them. They basically forbid him from bringing her to their houses or anywhere near the family, cause Anibal had an affair with Pau while still married to Pilar, his dearly departed wife. As a matter of fact, PauWhiner was with Anibal the day his wife died and Anibal wasn't there with his family. Pau feels she could have been married to Anibal by now if Ms Vikki and Adri hadn't resented her so much, that's why Pau doesn't like them much either.

Madelaine - The Paula/Anibal/Vikki situation you described is how I understand it, too. I doubt Vikki would appreciate it if Anibal brought Paula to Vik's house, which is why Paula showing up, unannounced, at Chez Balvanera a few weeks ago was such a big deal.

Okay... word verification numbers are so tiny, I feel that I'm at the optometrist having my eyes tested. Good thing these lenses don't need an upgrade!

"Márcale" = dial him (literal), or just, 'Call him.'

What tension! We're going to have to see Frankie suffer awhile, and wait for the explosion with Vikki and Arriaga. The Bea/Salsero situation is the happiest one at the moment, seeing the start of redemption and romance. But I'm guessing it won't be smooth sailing there for long either, am I right?

TN4ever

Oh, and I wanted to mention about Frankie and Bea, how dare he? I know he said he wanted her to go back to Cris' and that HE was the one that would take care of Bea and Guillo finacially, but Frankie needs to get a grip. Bea should be able to work if she wants too, and so what she works at the same place he does? They won't be hanging out anyway, and noone needs to know if he is worried about the family finding out they are sibs. I really didn't like the way he just grabbed Bea and was trying to hustle her outta there. I really like that Dances came to Bea's rescue, Frankie so deserved that, maybe not all the fisticuffs, but a good talking to. I wonder what Frankie is gonna tell Anibal when he comes to break up that fight?

I've got a theory about Lucía that has struck me like a lightning bolt. It is NOT a spoiler because I know nothing about Amor en Custodia, and my theories are never correct, but, nonetheless. . .

WHAT IF Liliana truly is Adriana's daughter? A baby swap, indeed, following classic telenovela rules, not necessarily mandated by Anibal but facilitated by Candelaria.

One of our fellow Caray mates here posted, a few days ago, that "all roads lead to Santa Rita." I think that may be astute and correct.

Lucia is "buried" in Santa Rita, no?

What if Cristina's baby died?
Candelaria is a nurse, and may well have been in attendance to the birth.

Knowing, or not knowing, that Adriana is Anibal's daughter, perhaps Adri's baby came into her hands somehow.

This could explain why Cris so casually and assuredly believes Liliana is her daughter.

AND... IF Candelaria had any knowledge about the parentage of this swapped baby, she is assured that the blood line is the same and the baby is still Anibal's granddaughter, via Cristina, with rights to inheritance.

(am going to cross-post this to T-W also, where it is being discussed also)

Thanks...I love my NovelaMaven recaps.

I wasn't paying close attention to the telephone conversation between the comandante and JA, but the bastard who left the country was a lawyer(?) who had been handling JA's payments on his farm. Kendra of course arranged the fire but of course JA is not aware of this.

Actually I'm not sure what information that Lili and Cristina would have that would aid the investigation.

I for one was glad to see the lights go on at the hacienda. As romantic as that all was, I really don't think that they are ready to take that next step.

I seem to recall that Frankie's wife's name is Amber but I don't remember her last name. (Vivi?) Somehow I suspect that she will show up sooner or later.

Did anyone spot any Baileys last night?

Carlos

DWS---A few episodes back it was recommended that you find a good martial arts instructer and get serious about your job. Why? Well because you were taken down twice by an older man, the second time after you had thrown dust in his eyes you still ended up on the loosing end.
Last night as you were trying to protect Beatriz, within a few short seconds, your opponent, the Guzmancito, had you in a defenseless position--one more move and I will break your arm!!!
Bodyguard might not be the best job for you---dance instructor??? maybe.
the gringo

NovelaMaven - terrific recap. I too loved "Apartment 904 -- For the love of all that is holy, get out!” And this snark "...she asks Arriaga to go to her friend Jocelyn's and pick up some things (like eye makeup remover, say)..." - lol

Vivi - "I interpret her ability to sense when JA is in danger to their very close bond. Her dad is her best friend and they understand each other on a level that she and Cris don't, even though she loves her mama just as much." I believe you hit the nail on the head.

Cris has had a call of the blood moment with Anibal and with Adriana, but not with Vickie. Hmmm, maybe Cris and Vickie’s feelings for Angel blocked it.

Doris – I’m thinking there was a baby switch too. Cris said she had gotten very ill after giving birth, so her baby could've died and somebody made the switch without she and Angel knowing it. I sure hope Candelaria was not a part of this.

Angel letting Vickie sleep in the marriage bed is Strike 1. Not planning to tell Cris is Strike 2. He didn't give his wife "her place" in her own place. Even though Paula will be the one to tell, I find it hard to believe Cris wouldn’t have noticed someone had used her bathroom, changed the sheets, left a whiff of perfume, etc.

Vickie has no evidence of Nelson’s cheating at this point to get a divorce on adultery grounds.

NovelaMaven, another masterpiece... LOVED the subtitles...
overall, here are my favs...

Sleepless in Santa Rita
(by the way in this scene Francisco opened up to Nikki about his feelings way more than i would have expected, he got as far as saying that he knew she would never consider him for boyfriend, that he would have to give up being her bodyguard and get some better career to give her the standard of living she is used to. This is when she snapped/pulled the brakes on his 'moment' and said whoah there! not so fast! we just had a X-rated kiss, that's all, captas?)

Aníbal snaps at Nelson for not telling him about Victoria's absence. So Nelson snaps at Tomasina. [I wouldn't want to be Polita right now.]

Apartment 904 -- For the love of all that is holy, get out!

[Don't they read "Goldilocks and the Three Bears" in Mexico?]

Overly moist and life-sucking Paula is flying high.

Suddenly Salsero, that swivel-hipped, oily-locked Lancelot, lunges toward Francisco and grabs him in an headlock

About Candelaria I don't think she had anything to do with any "switching" of babies, cause Pau Whiner was involved with Anibal then. Candelaria was long gone, even though it seems she must have visited Cris alot, cause Lili did mention that she was close with her Grandmama. The reason I say this is cause Pau Whiner herself mentioned she knows all about Candelaria but has never met her. Candelaria was not involved with Anibal anymore when Adri gave birth, but I bet Pau Whiner knows something. Pau Whiner seemed to say "and other things" the other night when she was talking to Cris about why she never goes to the Balvanera manse to introduce herself to the family.

Carlos- Alas, I was not paying close enough attention to the marriage certificate to remember the name. I do remember that it was very "Anglo" and was issued in Nevada.

Anibal probably just paid a random nurse to switch Adri's baby with a recently deseased baby. Cris's baby was probably the perfect candidate-- and yes, she has mentioned at least twice what a difficult birth it was and how ill she was afterwards.

Madelaine - Thanks for the info on Candelaria. She seems like a good woman who's only weakness was falling for Anibal. She needs to show up soon cause her baby girl needs help.

Thank you for the wonderful recap, NovelaMaven! Welcome on board!

I loved the Spanish sentences and your little comments, too.

Gringo:
"Bodyguard might not be the best job for you---dance instructor??? maybe."

LOL! That's so true.

Thanks for the recap Novela Maven...

Let's hope that Vicki doesn't just USE the "D" word but actually makes it happen. But Arriaga, you don't put her in your own bed. Put her in Bea's bed for god sake.

Nikki thinks she's going to go to Europe and have the lifestyle she has now completely supported by mommy and daddy. Right

Salsero wants a makeover? Let's hope it really does involve less grease in the hair and ditching the shades so we can see his nice eyes

Mads, thanks so much for the enthusiastic reception! You're the one who's absolutely fab.

irisz79, I'm glad you asked about why Paula hates Victoria so much. Now, thanks to Mads, we both know!

Diana, as always, thanks for your generous and interesting comment. Do you think Francisco was so aggressive towards Beatriz because he was still reeling from Nikki's slight? But you are so right -- he was behaving like a bully.

Doris, were you really inching toward team Paula? Well I'm glad you -- along with Nikki and Guzmán -- finally saw the light.

hi Vivi, Thanks for your nice welcome yesterday and for your generous words today. I agree that Lili/Lucía is a likely match. And yeah, Nikki's dramatic announcement is probably going to get upstaged by her parents' drama. And I love this comment of your:
"She just HAS to tell Cris about seeing a fully dressed Vicky sleeping ALONE in her bed. But it's convenient for her to not mention that she's intercepted letters from Cris' mother to Anibal which reveal a significant tie between them. Bitch please!"

Anon, 8:38, I'm so glad you liked the recap. "Dormir con pierna suelta" does mean something like "to sleep like a log" but also to sleep without worries, easily, relaxed.

TN4ever, thanks for answering Doris about "márcale". Maybe I'll go back and add that to the recap. And yeah, anyone who foresees smooth sailing for Bea and Salsero has probably never seen a TN.

Carlos, Thanks for the info on the fire. So Kendra arranged it? That descarada sinverguenza!

I was also glad to see the hacienda lights go back on. I wasn't surprised, though. It wasn't the right moment -- not for the characters and not for the story.

Gringo, if Salsero reads our blog, I hope he heeds your career advice. Is there much money in teaching salsa? hmm.

Niecie in MD, I was also thinking that Cristina would notice that "someone has been sleeping in my bed" even without mean Paula's telling her. I'm glad you liked the recap.

Hi Marta, So "beso equis" means "X-rated kiss"? Ahhh, that makes sense. Thank you.
Oh yes, Francisco definitely opened up to Nikki and consequently made himself more vulnerable to her snub.

Equis and neta are Nikki's favourite words. (And "okay", too.) She uses them in every second sentence.

I have many friends who speak Spanish well, and they are familiar with the slang, too, but they have no idea what the hell these words supposed to mean.
Great?
Cool?
Whatever?
Really?
Seriously?

Aribeth, Thanks so much for the nice welcome. You know, I always like to include some Spanish phrases in my recaps so I can keep trying to fool myself into thinking that I'm studying language, not obsessing over soap operas.

Dona Gringuita, thanks for the nice words. If Salsero does use a stylist recommended by Jean Marie, he may not get the look he is going for. (Remember JM's jammies?) Still, Salsero could stand to lose the gangster look.

Thanks for the awesome recap!

The fight between the two supposed bodyguards was ridiculous. What are they supposed to be protecting their clients from, butterflies and declawed kittens? Neither of them seemed to have any skills, but Salsero in particular should definitely change careers and make use of his dancing skills.

Once again, Lunivision edited down a nookie scene for no real reason. Nikki and Frankie got a little more snoozly than what we were shown; I saw the episode online awhile back.

To my knowledge equis, aka X means boring, dull, unremarkable - but there are people who use it as a synonym to "great". So I'm utterly confused now.

But since I've been listening to Nikki's incoherent babblings for months, I start to see a pattern... Maybe equis means uncool, neta means absolutely-really-cool? Or something like that.

Aribeth,
From what my Mexican friends tell me:

neta = verdad
Es la neta? Neta? = Verdad?

equis = ordinary. It's a dismissive, scornful way of describing something or someone.

That's why I was surprised to read Marta's definition of "beso equis" as an X-rated kiss. More Spanglish, okay?
;)

Julia, thanks!

"Once again, Lunivision edited down a nookie scene for no real reason. Nikki and Frankie got a little more snoozly than what we were shown; I saw the episode online awhile back."

Neta? How funny. And yet they have no problem showing KendraPorn (of which I for one have had enough). I'd love to sneak a peek at the Lunivision play book some time ...

Thanks. :)
Sometimes I read the Spanish forums at Univision to gather informations about the ratings (whoa, it's a frightening place, to be honest), and the word X is used often there. This actress is so X (= not so special), that show was too X, et cetera.

It wasn't even equis-rated or anything. From what I recall, he smooched his way down her abdomen to around hip level. No more clothes came off.

"Going to Europe" does not sound like a life plan to me. Go to Europe and do what? Hang around clubs with Eurotrash throneless "royalty" and lowlife Saudi princes? That isn't a life plan, it's a cry for help. Maybe mama will let her go but send Guzmancito with her, ha.

Does Vicky have no sense? She really couldn't see the flashing red lights warning her against staying at that apartment? She's a rich woman; she could have checked into a hotel. Too easy, I guess.

"Does Vicky have no sense? She really couldn't see the flashing red lights warning her against staying at that apartment? She's a rich woman; she could have checked into a hotel. Too easy, I guess."

To be fair, Vicky wanted to go to a hotel but she did allow herself to be talked out of it by Arriaga (who, in an earlier version of this story, I am told, is called Candide) :)

Nikki SHOULD go to Europe. Her aesthetic of "social x-ray", as Tom Wolfe put it, would be much more at home in Italy or France than in Mexico. She couldn't find anyone worse to hang out with than the vile Nabila-ettes who now surround her.

And of course Frankie should come with. Snort.

Thank you so much for this fab recap, NovelaMaven. It was awesome! Welcome to the team! We are all fortunate and honored.

Yeah, I watch ahead on these episodes and noticed that Univision trimmed the smooching scene between our Little Gorilla and the Spoiled Bruja. So unnecessary. They do this every. time. *rolls eyes*

I too was a bit taken aback by how up front Guzmancito was in saying that he'd have to get a better job. Sounds like he's thinking serious, long-term . . . and then the little Spoiled Bruja cut him off. At least we know now that she has a reason (worry over his supposed wife).

I wonder how it was that Vicki didn't hear Viewerville's warning to STAY AWAY FROM THAT APARTMENT! We were all screaming that warning to our TVs, now weren't we? Oh well, we must wear our beanies.

NM - yes, I was sort of inching toward the Paula table on the patio, in hopes that she really was trying to make amends and be a better person. But no more.

I think 'equis' can also mean "what-ever" or "what-evs"?
That's how I interpret it when I hear my Mexican friend use it.

I thought it was a hoot that Salsero was asking JM for advice.

Guzman's wife is named Amber Luke

Oye Doris, has the gang moved out onto the Patio of Lowered Expectations? Oh yes, I see the Paula table now -- it's the one with the pile of towels, all a bit damp.

Elvira, Thank you for the kind words. Me, I was taken aback when Francisco heard a noise outside his room at the hacienda and immediately pulled out his gun. A person could get shot ...

P.S. Out on the Patio, it's ok to go beanie-free. We are protected from logical thinking by the surrounding force fields.

I wanted to weigh in on the 'equis' discussion. I've always understood it like algebra, where X is the unknown value, could be anything, and in the case of this slang it's implied that it's nuthin' much. Un beso X. And neta is like 'net value,' eliminating anything extraneous, o sea, summing up, cutting to the chase, the long and short of it. La neta es que fue un beso equis.

Why do I recall "Amber Park" as the name on Guzmi's Word-template marriage certificate?

Arriaga and Vikki have SO many things to explain away at this point, they might as well just go for it for real.

I had thought maybe Candelaria had to do with the baby switch (yes, I'm on board with the 'Lili is Lucia' theory), but the fact that she was gone by then makes sense. Just a random switch seems adequate. But will Arriaga be the bio-dad or not?

As always, thank you to all recappers and commenters. I love this blog! I was a lurker last year, but am following the lead of somebody else who said this year they would come out of lurkdom. I don't know if that was here or on Amor Bravio, which I also follow.

TN4ever.

TN4ever, I'm so glad you've come in from the cold. Welcome! And thanks for weighing in on the equis/neta thing. I looooove talking about words.

So you and Briana Benitez remember Guzman's wife was named Amber. I'm waiting to find out la neta about this marriage. Guzman is such a straight arrow so we know there's more to this than meets the eye. I'm going to follow Beatriz's example and not go all Paula until I have the facts. :)

I'm short on time today. I don't have much time to comment but I for sure wanted to say thank you NovelaMaven for a great recap filled with some great snark.
Mellow as a cello
A roll in the hay [or in this case, on the desk.]
Don't they read "Glodilocks and the Three Bears" in Mexico?-- I repeat, great snark. LOL.

No time now but will read ALL of the comments later.

NovelaMaven,

Fabulous recap.! Thank you mils
veces for the Spanish phrases. Please keep them coming if you don't mind.

I thought I heard Nikki say "osa,"
but I couldn't figure out what she was saying or what she meant.

All the best ...

Gringo and Floridia,
Thank you both for the nice words. So happy you liked the recap.

Floridia, When did Nikki say "osa"?
hacer el oso, qué oso = to make a fool of yourself, what a ridiculous thing

There's also a filler word that people sometimes use but I can't recall Nikki saying: osea. It means something like "That is to say ..." or "so..."

Osea, hiciste el oso anoche So you make an ass out of yourself last night

Floridia - I heard Nikki say that "osa" thing, too, and rewound a few times, but I couldn't make it out clearly.

NM - yep, that's Paula's table with all the damp towels and heavy foundation and eyemakeup smeared on them.

I heard her say "osa" also but couldn't pin down what she meant. It didn't sound like "osea".

I agree, Julia, it sounded like "osa" to my ears.

I just went back and listened. At about 11:30, when Nikki and Guzman are outside, she says "imagine you and me as a couple -- qué oso, no?" How ridiculous!

Aha, thanks for your dedicated research! That's what makes this site so educational.

Yes, well, the next time I talk to my Mexican yerno, I plan to work "qué oso", "neta" and "equis" into the conversation various times. He will, of course, think I have lost my mind. Ni modo.
:)

NovelaMaven- Don't forget "captas?" (got it?)

Tipo ... ¡obvio!
(snort)

Novela Maven,

Thanks for checking into that.
I meant to rewind before asking the question because I thought it was oso, and then I transposed it to osa.

Qué oso ! That's an excellent expression. The other expression you mentioned which I have read and heard often is "O sea" which in many cases means, "in other words." I found this definition in my "Spanish for Gringos" book.
These expressions are priceless, and the book says that if you know how to use them, people think you know more than you rally do.

Thanks for all the comments that helped in this search.

Floridia,
I'm so glad you brought it up. That's one of my favorite kinds of question. I noticed in tonight's show Nikki used "osea/o sea (I've seen it written as one or two words):

When Victoria tells her Adriana is in Mexico but left the hospital abruptly, Nikki says "O sea, qué raro..."

She or Victoria, can't remember which one, also use the word "oso" in another way when she says: Give me a big hug, a bear hug -- "Dame un abrazo fuerte, de oso"

I also noticed another one we can add to our glossary -- expressions derived from "latir", to beat, to pulse:

"Me late que voy a pasar muy cool con ella" -- Nikki says this to Kendra when she is describing her plans to stay with her Aunt Adriana in Paris. (I have a feeling I'm going to have a very cool time with her.)

Nikki also says "¿Te late?" (¿Te parece?) meaning something like, "Does that sound ok to you?" "You wanna?"

[Sorry. I can't help myself. I'm such a word nerd.]

Whiney immiture Nikki is a joke, she blabbers and yaps just because she has a mouth. When will she learn to use her little brain instead ? Spoiled little ninny brat.

Kindra needs to be taught a lesson on how not to use people and minipilate them. Shes nothing better than a trashy crimanal prostitute that needs more than just a good public horse whipping.

I mispelled the words Kendra, manipulate and criminal but everyone who watches Kendra's actions and intent can see that she's a real dirty peice of crap.

.....and just to add, Victoria's husband is an ugly man with little beady eyes and a filthy selfish heart to cheat on her , especially with such a peice of garbage as Kendra. Victoria should punch him in his stupid face and never speak to him at all, it's sad that she can't seem to divorce him. She needs to set him out with the garbage to be taken to the dump !

Christina has always been insecure of course she would "jump at their throats" es muy celosa jealous much

Hi, I love your recaps.
My original language is spanish so, my apologies if I make some mistakes writing.
Regarding the Francisco and Bea confrontation: He reacts too hard with Beatriz probably because he is in a very bad shape after what happened with Nikki, but it isn´t because he is against Bea getting a job. His point is that´s not safe that his family and his clients have any connection. Same reason why he is not supposed to have a relationship with Nikki.
