Por ella soy Eva #127 1/17/13: 'Til You Come Back to Me- That's What I'm Gonna Do

Rebeca stops Helena in the halls of GI and gives her a lecture on the values of being a married woman, taking a few swipes along the way at single mothers and their shame.  Rebeca tells Helena she shouldn't pass up the opportunity to be Sadie, Sadie, married lady.  Helena is incredulous.  She tells Rebeca she'd rather be single than marry someone only for their name or status (you hearing this, catwoman?).  Rebeca is pleased to realize the piranha will not be returning to her wolf.

Eugenia is telling Juan she knows it was Claudia who switched her meds and sent her on that little caper.  Juan wants her to tell Modesto, but Eugenia protects Claudia because of the pain she is suffering at her mother's death.  Juan presses Eugenia for details of her conversation with Helena, but Eugenia admonishes him that she won't do it.

Helena is at the dinner table with Lalito.  He says something about Pluti helping him with his homework, and Helena confesses that she won't be marrying the Putz.  She asks if he's sad and no, he's happy just living with her and his abuela.  Lalo asks if she will marry someone else besides Plu-terco.

Rebeca is spying on Helena's emails, and she sees that the councilman from Playa Majagua will be at GI's anniversary party.  Renato comes in and she insults him as usual with feminine nicknames.  He gives her the program for the anniversary party and she sees that Marcela is giving a presentation.  She scowls and  bothers the Virgin to help her with her evil plans for revenge on Marcela and Helena.

At home the Conterases are bantering while setting the dinner table.  Jennifer teases Kevin about his crush on Claudia, and he gets embarrassed.  Fernando comes home, greeting the most wonderful family in the world, trying once again to fix his son's hair with some spit.  Marcela says she has wonderful news, that she will be giving a presentation on her thesis at the GI party.  The kids are excited for her, and Ferni struggles to do the same.

In a bar Pluti is whining to Onesimo about his broken engagement.  Onesimo refers to himself as Pluti's pal (cuate), and Pluti puts him down, calling him his brat, his animal.  Another anvil hovers for the Putz, because for the first time Onesimo looks genuinely hurt and insulted.

The kids have left, and Ferni admits to Marcela that he really hates his new job.  She implies he just doesn't want to work, talking about how she used to do much of his job at GI.  He acknowledges she used to help him a little, and she raises an eyebrow saying "a little?"  OK, OK a lot.  She talks about all those years she was a secretary at GI and did it because she had to.  She wasn't crazy about being a secretary.  This isn't what he wanted to hear.

Uh-oh.  Pluti shows up at Helena's late at night and drunk.  Way to score some points, dude.  *Though you don't call any more, I sit and wait in vain.  I guess I'll rap on your door, tap on your window pane*   He demands to know why she ended things with him.  Lalo is like a son to him.  Like any good narcissist, it doesn't make any sense to him.  Helena's phone rings and she goes to see who is calling but doesn't answer.  Pluti gets jealous and wants to know who is calling her at this late hour.  He tells her this isn't the first time she's not answered her phone in front of him.  "What do you want to know?  Have I been unfaithful?  No," she tells him, "I ended things with you because I don't feel the same way about you as you feel.  I don't want you bringing flowers or gifts or anything.  Now I want you to go."  He smiles eerily as she closes the door in his face.  She looks worried.

*whew*  all this before first commercial.

Lucia and Santiago are each at their computers at home as new roomies and best buds.  She's typing and asking him how would he describe her.  Santi comes to see what she's working on, and it's Kupido.com, a match-making site.  He makes gentle fun of her for her single-mindedness.  She gets up to see what he's doing, and it's a much more lurid version of the same thing; it's called Battle of the Sexes.  These people aren't looking to get married, she wryly notes.  Well, it's been a long time, he says defending himself (seriously?  it's been like a week).  He pushes her half-eaten banana back at her but she no longer wants it.

Ferni is in bed pretending to sleep.  Marcela comes in to apologize for their fight.  Sometimes one has to sacrifice for their family.  Jobs don't just fall out of the sky.  He pretends to snore, and she angrily drops into the bed with her back to him and a "no puede ser."  He looks pained.

Helena calls Juan back.  She explains that she didn't answer because she was with Plu-terco.  Ah, your betrothed, he replies.  He tells he called because he needed to hear her voice.  She smiles to herself.  She tries to get them back on the topic of clearing his name, but he tells her he loves her.  It's late and she has to go, she tells him, quickly hanging up.  She throws the phone over her shoulder in exasperation.  But she's still smiling to herself.

At the breakfast table Ferni and Marcela are talking to each other through gritted teeth.  Kevin notes that they are acting strange.  No, we're the same as always they tell the kids, slapping each other harder than necessary.  The kids look puzzled.

At the pension, Juan is explaining to Mimi in his usual perambulatory style that Eva knows about the broken engagement, but Juan doesn't know about the broken engagement, but Juan is Eva, and Eva is Juan.  He asks about Dagoberto.  Mimi tells him about the Dag's suggestion of turning the pension into an estetica (OK, I looked it up, and the dictionary says cosmetic surgery.  Is Mimi a doctor on the side?  Can singers do tummy tucks in Mexico?  I assume it's some kind of beauty salon)  Juan thinks it's a good idea, but the pension is not quite legally hers.  She explains with a complicated story about her mother that I didn't follow.  Juan will find a solution for her problem.  They leave Eva's room to discover the Dag standing right outside.  I love his shirts.  The Dag tells Mimi he heard a man's voice in Eva's room.  She tells him not to be a gossip.

Eugenia is telling Modesto that Claudia doesn't go anywhere other than to class.  She feels the girl needs some activities.  Claudia gets upset and says she still feels bad about her mother's death.  Modesto says (oh please, do I have to say it?), "Now is not the time to discuss this."  Eugenia talks about the trick played on her, feigning puzzlement at who could have done such a thing.  Claudia looks nervous.

Pluti has gone to Bastardo yet again.  He'd have made a swell son-in-law.  Basto tells him that his talk with Helena didn't go well.  Never mind that, Pluti wants to know if she's in love with somebody else.  Basto tells him he's not seen either song or smile from Helena, so obviously not.  Not even for me, Pluti realizes.  Ouch.  No one knows how men can suffer at the fault of a bad love affair.

Modesto asks Claudia if she was the one who switched Eugenia's pills, and of course she denies it, playing the victim because of her mother's death.  Where would she even find the time?  Modesto, the dullard, says that if it wasn't her, and it wasn't Chepina, it had to be Eugenia herself.  Claudia says that of course that crazy old woman did it without realizing it.  Modesto does... (you don't need me to tell you)... nothing.

Renato's hair consistently bothers Eva.  She calls him Copetes (tufts, forelocks) and drags him into her office when she discovers he found out about Claudia switching Eugenia's medicine.  Renato bitterly tells her that surely he and his sister inherited their genes from Modesto the incorruptible, who put Juan Carlos on a pedestal their whole lives, and he turned out to be a thief.  Eva is impactada, and she curses the fraud for which JC has been framed.

Helena tells Lucia of the problems with the Playa Majagua project, and begs her to be discreet.  Lucia is offended and leaves the office ranting about how she isn't trusted.  Pluti slithers in and is ashamed and apologizes for last night's faux pas.  *I'm gonna swallow my pride, gonna beg ya to please - baby, please see me (Baby, won't you see me)*  She tells him all is forgotten, but to avoid doing more damage to each other it would be best if they didn't see each other.  Pluto can't believe they were at the point of marrying and now they are going to treat each other like strangers.  Helena tells him, "The one thing that can decide if we can be friends is time."  Pluti ain't done with this yet.  He accuses her of still being in love with Juan Carlos.  Eva walks in on the middle of his rant, and Pluti accuses her of putting this idea in Helena's head.  Helena is insulted at the suggestion she can't think for herself.  She asks Pluti to leave them alone.  *I'm gonna camp by your steps until I get through to you. I got to change your view, baby ('Til you come back to me- that's what I'm gonna do)*

Eugenia's doctor suggests to her that she give acting classes to keep herself healthy and busy.

By phone Rebeca is scolding Onesimo.  He points out that this is the way she used to treat him, and she turns on a dime to become sweetness and light.  She asks if they are going to become associates or what (she wants that 3 million dollars which he implied knowing where Pluti hid it).  She looks to the sky and mutters about him being a naco a thousand times over.

The slime Mendoza shows up at GI.  Rebeca asks what he's doing there and he snubs her.  He's ready for the next stage of their scam, but Pluti wants to know how he is with the women.  Mendoza brags about his skill (yech) and Pluti smiles maliciously.  He asks Mendoza to seduce Eva Maria Leon Jaramillo viuda de Zuloaga.  Que? Que?  What?

Eva asks Helena if she has told Juan about the broken engagement to Plut-asco.  Helena says no.  She doesn't want Pluti to suffer.  Eva says that Pluti is obsessed with her, he doesn't love her.  Helena says it pains her to admit this, but she wants to return to Juan Carlos.  Eva appears confused by her attitude.

Bill thanks for this marvelous recap and all the screencaps.

Pluti still doesn't know what no means evidently. What a putz and he really thought Bastardo could help him. Eva is so right, Pluti doesn't love Helena he is obsessed with her. He can't have her and it is driving him crazy. Hated how he showed up at Helena's all drunk and accusatory. He seriously needs to back off. And how ironic he blames everyone else for his break up with Helena, but himself.

Loved the little talks Mimi and Eva/JC have. Hated Dogbert listening at the door. I don't Dogbert to find out Eva is JC.

Now didn't we all just know that Claudia would deny she messed with those pills and blame it on Eugenia. I hope Claudia slips up and gets found out. She needs a good comeuppance.

Oh, Bill in your recap you put Daniel instead of Kevin, in the scene where the Conteraras' are eating.

I hope Rebe doesn't succeed in harming Marcela. Marcela has suffered enough at Rebe's hands. I think the Virgin isn't listening to Rebe at all.

And Fern needs to grow up. He so resents how far Marcela has come with her work. He never worked at G.I. unless you count all those paper airplanes he made, lol. Even when JC was still "alive" the only ones that worked were Santi and JC. They just kinda dragged Fern along.

Bill- and thanks for the Aretha Franklin lyrics and the song "Till You Come Back To Me", that is my favorite song by her : )

thanks, Madelaine. I fixed it.

Thank you, Ithabill! I loved the quotes from the song with the rapping and tapping. It was so appopriate.

The best advice given in the episode was when Bastardo told Pluterco to forget about Helena and just move on.

Fernando is hopeless, spoiled, useless and annoying: he only cares about Fernando.

Mimi needs to get her act together and realize that Dagoberto has not changed before he finds out way too much about Eva.

With Pluterco unhinged and Mendoza involved it feels like things are going to get really creepy very quickly.

Jarifa

Bill, thanks for the great detail and screen grabs. The classic to me is Rebecca praying to the Virgincita. And the image of PLuty "slithering" into Helena's office.

I agree with Jarifa, an 'unhinged' PLuty + Mendoza + Dogbert will make for creepiness in the futures of our protagonists.

I like the independence of Helena's character. If she wasn't deeply in love with Juan, shed be content being a single mom for the rest of her life. It sometimes takes great strength to be honest with yourself and go against the grain. She doesn't know what we all know about PLuty and Juan so she is just being cautious. ( But driving us crazy in the meantime!). Rebecca is obviously the bad guy here...the devil on Helena's shoulder...and the actress playing Rebecca is doing a fantastic job of this.

I am totally pulling for Marcella to be successful in her pursuits against all odds but she is going to need some help from the good guys. Mentorship!

Gertie

Fabulous recap and pics Ithabill.

I agree with you all that the creep factor has gone WAY up lately, with Pluti on the edge, the Dog sniffing around, Daniel the Jr. Rapist messing with Jennifer's head, and now Mendoza. But the Mendoza thing actually makes me laugh. I cannot wait to see him try to seduce Eva! I'm already laughing.

I know there are some who find Fer cute. I'm sorry, but I hate him. Always have. Has there ever been one good thing that happened to Marcela that he didn't then ruin with his machismo, jealousy and pouting? Not to mention the times he purposely tried to sabotage her.

Great recap, Bill!

Yes, we have the creepies piling on. But we have another rising trend too.

Adriano loves Eva.
Mendoza will romance Eva to seduce her.
Dogbert wants Eva's money so will probably romance her to get at it.

Who says there's nothing new under the sun??? A telenovela where more men desire the galan than the Sweet Young Thing!

Thanks, Bill! Great recap and perfect screen shots -- you got all the best quotes.

I didn't really follow Mimi's homeownership story, either, but it had something to do with the fact that it wasn't her mother but her godmother who left her the house, and some crucial document doesn't have a signature. Also there seemed to be references to the real cousin Eva, who has disappeared? Or something? Can anyone throw more light on that?

I absolutely loved it when Eva threw Renato out of her office by saying, "Beat it or I'll comb your hair for you!"

Oh, and Mimi's explanation to Dogbert about the man's voice he heard in Eva's room was that Eva's (male) cousin was in town. I think things are about to get even more complicated...

Blue- I think the real Eva is off somewhere, don't remember, and that is why Mimi concocted the idea that JC become Eva. I know the real Eva is still kicking I think maybe in rehab but not sure. I thought the pension belonged to both Mimi and Eva, or just to Mimi.I do know for sure that Eva and Mimi are first cousins.

I think Original Eva smuggled herself into the States? I've been wondering ever since the beginning, what would happen to JC/Eva if Original Eva got into trouble, got deported, or needed to reclaim her Real Identity again for some other reason... I don't think we've ever seen a photo of Original Eva, but for maximum comic effect she should probably be very petite!

(Thanks for the recap, Bill - can't wait to read it, and watch the episode for that matter... it's all I can do to keep up with the comments this week.)

Thanks for the recap with embedded laughs, Bill. Loved seeing where you pointed out Modesto's consistent and annoying reactions.

Vivi in DC, I'm sitting next to you, waiting to see Mendoza seduce Eva. It should be an exercise in futility for him, and lotsa laughs for us.

Sometimes I wonder if Onesimo has some good breeding and money hidden in his background? May be wishful thinking on my part, but he may gain an upper hand one day.

La Paloma

I still like Rebecca despite all her badness and I don't want evil things to happen to her. But if she comes out on top after all this then I may have to run out and light some candles to the Virgincita myself. She should end up working for Marcela. Actually, I'd light candles for that too.

Kelly

Me too, Kelly! Amen over and out!! Gertie

I had written a beautiful post yesterday(though not as witty as Ithabill's) but it was compromised when I tried to sign onto Blogger. Damnation! The thing is lost.

Briefly: I loved how Bill nailed it on the head with Santi; Que, que what? A one-week hiatus from the sex jungle (while Lucia is eating a banana... how suggestive can it get?)depresses him? Poor man! I feel for him... NOT. Try a couple of years, Santi bebe.

As for Fer... Let's just say that his machismo is getting in the way of his gentle heart. Results? A complete lack of self-esteem, which leaves him bitter, conflicted and unfair. He needs a shrink more than Dona Eugenia!!!

The Mimi-pension thing: My understanding is that she inherited the pension from her godmother (who was perhaps her aunt as well), REAL Eva's mother. Because nomadic Eva did not show up to claim her due, the house, by default, was turned over to Mimi but may be Real Eva's bunker. Is that what you all got???

I love that my Spanish is getting back to what it was 30 years ago. And when I don't get it, I have the imagination to supply the rest of the details. Any other show you can suggest???? (Notwithstanding that I am limited to Huluvision).

Now to the next episode!

The pension: did i imagine it, or was it that the godmother didn't have time to change her will to give it to mimi, but had time to write a letter?

oh wait, was it a movie i watched? someone got the blue folded lawyer paperwork and said "he really did love me". yes! that was Cadillac Records, and Beyonce as etta fitzgerald?

never mind, but yes, how exciting that we might have some Real Eva fiascos now!
