Weekend Discussion: Novela Stars in Passion Plays

Since today is Good Friday, I thought this photo gallery would be appropriate.  This features Passion Plays by novela stars.  The first set -- from Paixão de Cristo --  is Brazilian, the second -- from Triunfo del Amor -- is Mexican.  Most CarayAmigos will recognize the actors in the Mexican photos:

Paixão de Cristo

Triunfo del Amor

Unfortunately, since I can't find a listing for the Brazilian film I can't positively identify all the actors.  However, I can tell you that Jesus is portrayed by Thiago Lacerda and others in the production include Fafá de Belém (Maria), Vanessa Lóes (Madalena) e Sidney Sampaio (Pilatos).

Happy Easter to all.

Thanks, Urban. Happy Easter to you.
Our novelas seem to treat every aspect of life and culture.

I hope that everyone enjoys the holiday weekend -- even those who are not celebrating the holiday!

I am working right now on a Jello Rainbow Cake from the early 60s cookbook and I think it will work with the sugar-free product. It's for Sunday at a friend's house.

Just in case it doesn't work, I'll also make the Grasshopper Pie.

Back on topic: Until I saw TdA I didn't get what the Passion Play really means. People do it in order to feel it and watching the characters in that series do this after knowing them for more than 100 episodes did that trick for me.

UA...I vote for the Grasshopper pie!

In all seriousness...thank you very much for all that you contribute to this site. I've learned a great deal here and quite a bit of it is thanks to you. Please know that your hard work on the weekend discussions and the recap is always very much appreciated by me!

Thank you, UA, and happy Easter to you as well. They did a similar thing, not technically a passion play, but a parade in FELS and I *think* there was one in either STuD or MEPS too but wouldn't swear to it.

I remember the one in FELS because it was the first time they had filmed that place from such an angle and distance that we could get a good look at all the telephone/utility poles, TV roof antennas, junction boxes, etc. that contradicted the "frozen in time" vibe they'd tried to preserve on the show thus far. After the parade, however, there were frequent aerial shots and they'd identify the real name of the town.

Well... I *say* I remember it vividly, but that's not entirely true. I vividly remember the telephone poles and whatnot, but I don't remember who was actually in the parade. :)

Julie, Dona Milagros (Carmen Salinas' character) was the Virgincita, Maria Desamparada (Maite Perroni) was Mary Magdalena, and Cruz Robles, Dona Milagros' nephew (Pablo Montero) was Jesus. I really enjoyed this part of the story for the following reasons:

-- It made me understand why Passion Plays are done because by this point in the series we knew these characters as though they were friends.
-- It must have had special meaning for Carmen Salinas because I have heard she is very spiritual.
-- It was also a confirmation of Carmen Salinas' status as the ultimate sorrowing mother in TN's. She had been in the Pieta pose in other novelas before and she finally got the chance to do it for real, so to speak.
-- It was well-done.
-- If I'm not mistaken it occurred during Semana Santa in the Mexican broadcast schedule.
-- In one of Pablo's early music videos there is a shot of him being crucified on a heart drawn on the ground.
