Weekend Discussion: Amor Bravío – Karmageddon Awaits!

What final fate should befall the evil ones in this tale of greed, lust, romance, and toxic family dynamics?

Isadora Gonzales de Albarrán

Her Crimes:

Murder of Padre Baldomero, Alonso Lazcano, Ximeana Diaz, Eleazar Lazcano (flashback)
Attempted murder of Camila Monterde, Dionicio Ferrer (as collateral damage)
Solicitation of murder
Blackmail (Salomon Morales, Alonso, Daniel [by extension])
Arson
Insurance Fraud
Forgery with intent to defraud
Mayhem (cutting out Leoncerdo's tongue)
Kidnapping
Poisoning
Pandering

Isadora Gonzales, Mama Dragon, Black Widow Lazcano, whatever we call her, is definitely perverse. We saw her having an orgasmic reaction during the murder of Padre Baldomero and almost laughing after murdering Alonso and Ximena. Rather than handing over Don Daniel's portrait (which Camila had to take almost by force) or any of his mementos she tried to burn them. She was cold as ice when Ileana caught her spiking Cayetano's tea. As for boinking the devil under his wife's roof and possibly in her own bed, the lack of boundaries with Alonso was already creepy enough.

What should be her final fate?

I don't want her to die; I want her to suffer. I want to see her in prison for life without parole. She should be disfigured or disabled in some way, considering that she cut out Leoncerdo's tongue and caused Alonso to become quadriplegic. There should be no opportunity for her to seduce a male correctional officer or warden and she should be locked up among the most violent female criminals in the area, just like Carlota in ENDA.

Dionicio Ferrer (or whatever his real name is)

His Crimes:

Multiple Identities
Business Fraud
Murder for Hire
Accessory to murder after the fact (3 counts)
Accessory to rape after the fact (Leoncerdo prior to his arrest)
Destruction of Property (Camila's herd)
Blackmail (Iag-ho, Amanda's neighbor, and Miriam's doctor)
Domestic Abuse

El Diablo has been called a demon by his victims; I see I called it perfectly when I began blogging this series. He has smooth-talked and seduced his way through life while being intelligent enough to run a corporation, not unlike Al Capone during the Depression. Like his female accomplice he enjoys deceiving others and taking advantage of their weaknesses. He is supremely clever at keeping the blood off his hands and the dirt off his expensive shoes, but doesn't seem to recognize that he has a weakness of his own. Not even Hissadora can make him see that; I'm not sure whether she's disgusted or amused at this.

He is unusual in the sense that he isn't merely a monster of greed, but a clever manipulator of others' emotions and egos. This is not usual for a male villain with adult victims to whom he is not related (Natalia doesn't really count because he did not raise her).

What should be his final fate?

Since Mexican law does not allow for sending him back to Hell, the best we can hope for is life without parole and solitary confinement. No communications with anyone in the outside world. We can also be sure that nobody will visit him in the prison. However – based on the actor's resume – it's more likely he will end up back in Hell through some other means.

Leoncio Martinez

His Crimes:

Incestuous Rape
Attempted Murder for Hire (Padre Baldomero)
Attempted Murder (Daniel and Pablo)
Murder (Fidencio and Julio Hernandez)
Prison Escape

There's nothing ambiguous or complicated about Leoncerdo's crimes or his motives for them. He's a major sicko, but a calculating one; he waited until Luzma's eighteenth birthday so he wouldn't be guilty of statutory rape. One wonders how long he had been contemplating this crime. Hissadora offered him three million pesos to murder Padre Baldomero, which almost spooked him for superstitious reasons. Shooting Daniel and Pablo was obviously motivated by revenge. We don't like that he is still alive and escaping from prison. It's surprising that nobody in the prison hasn't already done him in for raping his own niece. However, we have to admire his determination to learn to read and write in order to nail Hissadora.

What should be his final fate?

I don't know whether Mexico deals for evidence the way we do in the U.S. I hope not because he doesn't deserve to get out any earlier than the 30 years he was sentenced to. His escape gives the authorities an excuse to shoot him dead; if he doesn't die this way he should die in some prison brawl. That might give Luzma the peace of mind she lost when he raped and impregnated her.

Yago Albarran

His Crimes so far (alas, not punishable by law)

Selfishness
Arrogance
Promiscuity
Betrayal

Although he hasn't done anything yet that merits arrest, Iagho (my latest nick for him) deserves some dastardly end to his selfish career.  For the moment I vote that Cayetano disinherit him completely and leave his share of la Buenaventura to the yet unborn baby.  Natalia --  for all her naivete -- deserves better than to be married to this jerk.

Where's Yago?
I can see Omar and Dio's other minor demons escaping notice, but Dio's latest henchboy merits karmic attention.
And it may be that, whether or not they have exactly forgiven Auggie, many feel Augustina has already suffered enough, but she was messing up our protagonista's life for a very long time. Just because Camila has a generous soul, do we? Does the ineffable ground of absolute being that doles out karma?

UA, I agree completely with what you've said, and therefore, alas, I have almost nothing to add. I'm glad that you said Dio should not only be in prison for life but should be in solitary confinement. If he were in the general prison population, I think he'd wind up being a leader, a big shot, someone who can order the other prisoners (and perhaps some of the guards) around, much the way Patricia O'Farrell did when she was imprisoned in "La Reina del Sur."

And I agree with Anonymous 2:02 that Yago should be included here. He's such a skunk. Not in the same league as Hissadora, Dio, and Leoncerdo, but definitely worthy of an anvil dropping on him (or, to quote Anonymous's great expression, Yago "merits karmic attention.")

I don't agree that Aggie needs/deserves more punishment. I'm one of those who feel she has already suffered and repented sufficiently.

Thanks for this post Urban. It will be fun to read what others think, but I think you've summed up nicely how our three main villains should be punished.

Although Yago hasn't yet committed a real crime, I eagerly await his punishment for his patan behavior.

Gussy was never a villain and has more than received enough punishment for her arrogance, stupidity, willful blindness, jealousy, and snobbery.

One amendment to Leo's crimes: He killed both Hernandez brothers- Julian and Fidencio (Luzma's dad).

OK; made those corrections.

I think Augustina has been sufficiently punished. Whatever her maternal failings during Camila's youth she didn't seem to injure Camila's self-esteem to any major degree. Camila is a woman of intelligence, passion, and courage and will be OK going forward unless these writers shock the hell out of us and give her a Tosca finale.

Terrific overview, UA. I agree with your punishments.

Based on the way you presented them (in ranking order), I have to say that Isadora is the worst of the worst. Remember that she also had her house burned down for the insurance.

Another character who sort of took care of his own rehabilitation is Abe. I don't know that he deserves more, but a couple of months in prison for abuse of position and power isn't enough for the train wreck he started.

A live Bruno would have been fun to punish.

Julian got his and I'm satisfied that a dog dug him up.

Anita, you crack me up, "Julian got his and I'm satisfied that a dog dug him up."

If Daniel was willing to forgive Abe, I think the burden of knowing that Daniel was the better man is adequate. It's possible that Abe lost his badge over this as well.

Bruno's fate was appropriate, as was Julian's.

Pobre Aggie has been overpunished for being dense. I hope she will be sprung soon.

Yago is a real jerk, selfish, greedy, but he hasn't committed a crime, at least in a legal sense, so far. We'll see what he does under Dio's guidance. He appears to care for Ana. He and Pablo seemed close in the beginning of the TN. We knew he was jealous but now it seems to be hate.

Iza , Dio, Leo, Satan is waiting with the hottest spot in hell.

One of Cesar Evora's previous villains (see the discussion on Toxic Fathers) actually ended up being sucked into hell at the end. That would be appropriate here.

Thanks for this post UA. ITA w/your punishment for the crimes particularly Isa and Dio living captured in confinement where they belong. Leo can be tormented as well b/c death also is too good for him.

Iago was really horrible to Pablo in the revelation of the latter's true father for that and his other abuses of others he needs to be cut off financially as that will hurt him the most.

And ITA that Gussy has suffered enough. Though her earlier behavior was bad, being in jail (and real TN jail) for trusting a cad even if she should have known he was playing her is harsh. I hope her new cellmate will be her friend.

Here are my votes:

Hissy: Dead, painfully. I'd say jail but no one (like Alonso) is around to savor that. Although there is his real mom whose name I can't remember. So if she has made friends in jail to help her make Hissy's life miserable, then jail. Otherwise, dead.

Dio: Def. jail. That would be fun to see.

Leo: Def. dead. Double dead. Just so Luzma can sleep again. With her husband.

Yago: Married to Iliana, who actually might deserve better at this point. Never mind. She gets someone new and he gets banished for a few years to Aron's kibbutz to clean toilets and think about what he's done.

Interesting. Personally, I think Iagho will probably end up with an STD or why did they bother writing in the blood test?

Some humiliating work wouldn't hurt, either. Good one.

I have wondered if Ramon ends up being Vivi's dead child, that she was very ill at her child's birth and Bruno just took the child to further his dominance/brutality.

Boy, I have to say that watching from online videos failed to convey how angry Natalia was. Back to TV this week.

The rest go to prison but not before Isa is dealt some painful retribution.

I think that death is an easy out for Hissadora. I hope that is not her Karmageddon.

I have to wonder if Hissadora's fate will be some form of physical maiming along the lines of what she did to Leo. Someone one with such a cruel and cold heart is going to pay dearly for what she has done, but please don't let it be death.

As for Dion, I'd like to see him exit Stage Left a la Don Giovanni along with sound effects and flashing flames!

Yago...I agree...I think the writers are going to use him as a PSA for STDs. They might even go so far as to give him AIDS. He might even become a leper, but that would be a bit far fetched...still...you never know.

I'd love something like Carlota's final for Pissadora and for Leoncerote to rape her and subsequently die so Luzma can chill. Dio's final should be brought onto him by those who he has tortured most. Agustina is the least of 5 evils and deserves redemption. I hope that these wishes should come true but we will just have to wait and see. -Charly <3

Have you ever noticed that Jose Elias Moreno is always getting the worst crap in the novelas? Like in Pasion, Bouffy suffered decapitation and here he was speechless (LITERALLY!) Something as half as bad as those should do him right since his tongue is out of the picture LOL.

My current guess is that Leoncerdo will end up dead, perhaps at the hands of the police. He probably will not get to enact revenge on Hissadora.

I have mixed feelings about that. It's always satisfying to watch the villains turn on each other, but why should he have the satisfaction of raping and/or disfiguring her?

He should end up dead so Luzma doesn't have to spend the rest of her life being afraid of him. Many rape victims become like her at least temporarily, but her trauma is all the greater because it was caused by someone she should have been able to trust.
