Off-duty bloggers phone home! Porque el amor manda needs two (or more) of you
Hello friends,
I'm behind the beat here because I've been very busy with another project and then the flu. But I can see the light at the end of the tunnel! As the anvils are whistling past our ears on Por ella we are assembling a new crew for the Colunga comedy "Porque el amor manda" - Ezra and I are stepping down and Wednesday and Thursday slots are available - unless somebody has already told me they're stepping up and I have spaced it out. Please EMAIL me at caray@mappamundi.com if you're interested in joining the team which will be head up by our redoubtable Cheryl!!

ps if you are interested in my other ridiculously arcane project, related to telenovelas only by the florid melodrama contained within - see Polish Jewish Cabaret, a blog where I am posting my own (vocal) recordings of Yiddish Theater songs from cabaret and kleynkunst between the world wars in Warsaw Poland. Here are a couple silly little samples - first, a song about poor girls ending up in brothels, set to a soppy old American tune "In the Shade of the Old Apple Tree"
and second, a free download (the rollicking more Jewish sounding 'Yosl Yosl') if you want to be on the mailing list for the project...

I'm jealous of your arcane projects! The most arcane thing I've been doing lately (besides recapping) has been laundry! Fortunately, most of my friends think recapping is arcane enough. (Some of them are even baffled by the laundry.)
If I'm not mistaken, Wednesday and Thursday have always been the hardest nights to get people to recap. I wonder why that is? I know I just get tired. Is that the case for everyone else too?

Oh Melinama, I am glad you are improving enough to get this message out. So did Julie say she is recapping on Wednesday or doing laundry??? And Julia, you are wonderful to take on Thursdays.

I'm recapping Tuesdays, actually. (I save laundry for my rip-roarin' wild weekends!) So I think we're now full up except for Wednesdays!

I caught a little bit of this novela in PR in December... and it kind of let me down.
I dont think either Fer, Blanca or Erik are strong enough actors to carry this show... they needed Susana G, Cesar E or someone strong but i will watch as much as i can so i can help out or pinch hit for someone.

Britishcomedyfan, I don't think anyone wanted to deal with all the crying in Lágrimas -- especially after the weepfest that was Abismo.

Blue is somewhat right about Abismo, but also Refugio was such a hit and it was a slog of tears too, plus it debuted right around the holidays and noone was in the mood to recap a tear fest during the holidays. I know Victoria Ruffalo is a fan favorite, but all the crying in the previews for that TN were so depressing. Plus I think the cast wasn't a big draw either. It didn't seem to interest anyone, jus' sayin'.

I don't know. Is that what you were volunteering to do? Definitely don't take on more than you want to! I thought that you wanted Thursdays all to yourself, and some Wednesdays as well. If you want to just do Thursdays, I could just be in charge of Wednesdays and either do a brief summary or ask for a substitute on the weeks I can't do it. Really I should be able to do Wednesdays most weeks.
Julia, I can alternate brief Wednesdays with you unless and until we find someone else.

hello, everyone. just to let you know, i just told Cheryl in a private FB message that i'm willing to help out with Wednesday recaps. I'll have to email her the recap and then she can post it here. unfortunately, i can't help out any other day/night but Wednesday.
Maybe TJ & Julia can share Thursdays, then, and Charly and Jody could share Wednesdays? (Can you tell that scheduling student assistants is a major part of my day job?)

Just so everyone knows, I don't have permission to open new themes on this blog. I have informed Cheryl about this, but she hasn't said if she will be able to help me by posting recaps for me. That one i really have a feeling i should not recap. La Hija del Mariachi is my favorite novela... ever!... for those who know me, let me add a disclaimer. Corazon Salvaje is still the best production dramatic novela for me, and Yo soy Betty la Fea is the best with added comedy... but LHDM added a third element I love... MUSIC!! and mariachi music is one of my favorites...
so i am afraid if i recapped this one i would constantly be comparing to the other one and my dissappointment would show in the recap...
I would rather stay as a substitute for this one... and maybe be also a substitute for QBA but it would not be fair that i recapped that one regularly.

Hope it works out, Corazon! The existing recappers in a particular time slot always get first dibs, but there are pretty much always some who don't want to continue -- and being willing to work in the 10 pm slot should make you popular! :)

yes Blue Lass, please watch it... record it and then watch and comment. it will be worth it... even though i would say it is more worth it to watch LHDM but if you like the music it will be great. in the original, the writer basically let the song lyrics dictate the storyline, or lets say she chose a song and then wrote the episode around it.

they even bought the rights to use ANY Jose Alfredo Jimenez song so she had hundreds of popular mariachi songs to choose from, along with others they bought the rights to one by one or were already public domain.
JAJ is the author or many many of the most popular mariachi songs like El Rey, Ella, Yo, Paloma querida, Si nos dejan, camino de guanajuato, pa'todo el ano, etc etc...
