PEAM #10, 3/22/13: What Do They Make at Avon, Anyway?
They Make Plans:
Rogue wants to throw a big ol' surprise engagement party for Alma but naturally doesn't know a thing about her, including who her friends are or her taste in rings, so he delegates it all to Doña Susana. Jesús sees her consternation and offers to help. He cops Alma's address book from her phone which she accidentally left on his desk and goes off with Doña Su and a big wad of bills. What could possibly go wrong?
They Make Trouble:
Paty tries to get info about the party by buttering up Jesús. Gosh, Almita says you're one super sexy secre, didja know? He gets all goofy-face but still doesn't tell her anything. She flounces off.
They Make Promises:
The weedy little cab driver comes back for his reward, and of course Chucho's pockets are still empty. He promises him something tomorrow. Unless tomorrow's payday, this isn't looking good.
They Make Progress:
Xochi calls Jesús and asks him out for coffee; he distractedly agrees. The poor chica is over the moon. Maricela eavesdrops snottily.
They Make Memories:
Alma sees Jesús blissing out over his CD of Valentina pix and sits down to watch with him. She reassures him that it's not his fault he missed her early years, and anyway he'll be there for her from now on. Not every family is happy, she says wistfully. She confides that she would like children herself but is afraid of repeating the mistakes her own parents made.
They Make Excuses:
Vero asks to speak with Doctora Deliciosa after Valentina's session and tells her she is concerned about her child spending time in that Big Bra environment. The Doctora says she sounds jealous. Vero protests, protests, protests too much.
They Make Command Decisions:
Jesús overrides Doña Su's philosophy of "the bigger the rock, the bigger the love" and insists on a simple ring with turquoise, Alma's birthstone. It's wicked ugly, but he's the galán, so we know it will turn out all right -- after a maximum of six months of malentendidos.
They Make Wishes:
Vero calls Jesús and demands to meet his chesty girlfriend. What's her name, anyway? "Alma..." he says dreamily. Rut-Roh.
In Other News:
- The three sillies are preparing a memorable practical joke for "la nueva secretaria." Xochi is not on board, and even Susana hesitates.
- Fer suggests to Xochi that they forget all about the incident in the photocopy room. Ya think?
- Vero almost catches Elías sneaking junk food, which he hides in a houseplant. It should be noted that he looks at it with more passion than he looks at her.
- Rogue arrives home to find a rollicking party in progress on his patio, complete with a roasting pig and a tacky little bald guy who says, "Jesús invited me!" THERE WILL BE FALLOUT.

I learned a new word last night: pechugona (big chested)(btw when I am shopping at the local market for chicken breasts, will asking for pechugonas fly?) :) So funny that Verónica can't get over the pechugona bra. Clearly her situation with JesÚs is not "dead and buried" as she claims it to be.
The best was Chatita catching Verónica spying.
Jarifa
Please don't call me Señorita Zorrilla, I feel like an 80 yo woman. Besides, I am not ''señorita'' anymore, please call me Patricia!
They make fashion statements:
Vero's shoes came directly from a KISS eBay auction. I wonder how much are they? Oh! And that neon lemon green phone she carries everywhere! C'mon!
They make ''diligencias'':
Not that they build stagecoachs, but run errands outside the office.
They make abrupt changes:
Interior/exterior make up and hair. Besides, when you go shopping with the oldest secretary, you should use more makeup than she does!!
They make close-ups in 4 stages!
Let me get this:
Vero expects Jesús to have home that looks like hes been living in for the last 10 years, just a few days after his arrival to Monterrey
but he can NOT HAVE A steady girlfriend? How so?
One more word for the vocabulary:
TIRRIA (undeserved hatred)
Life Goes On....
Good Luck to your teams, and watch out for Florida Gulf Coast, they may be the Cinderela team this year.

I loved PatiCake flouncing, yes she does, among other catchy observations.
Thanks Pablo for your insightful observations and great vocabulary additions.
Can't wait to hear about your adventures, Blue Lass. Madelaine will regale us with tales on the next two Friday nights
Pablo, love your "they make" list especially about Vero, what is up with that neon green phone receiver???
Favorite line: Vero worrying about her daughter being in a "Big Bra Environment".
Have to admit, had I ever been separated from my children's father, I might have been nonplussed by finding a humongous bra at his apartment.
Vero keeps wearing ugly shoes, but she was showing off a zippy little "trasero" in this one...Step back Jennifer Lopez! Maybe that's what Elias fell in love with.
All that hoo-hah about the ring and the one Chucho picked looked like it came out of a Cracker Jack box. Ye gods.
Lee, so sorry about that beatdown. Your coach is such a fine guy...and he looked so dejected. Broke my heart. But of course I'd love to see the Big 10 teams go as far as possible, just because Charles Barkley always disses us. Big bully!
For curious people like myself, there's some episodes floating around YT that are not censored (from Galavisión), so we can hear EVERY SINGLE WORD!
For curious people like myself who don't want to see them or don't have access, all the beeped words Fernando says, are mostly flower names and ''terminations'' with ''a'' instead of ''o'' for feminization purposes...
My main team is the FL gators, my Alma mater, they have a shot of taking the whole thing. I'm also routing for Miami & Fl gulf coast,so far so good.
And I couldn't be happier, Miami Heat 25 straight
Didn't Verónica's purse match up well with that necklace?
I'm suspecting that poor taxista is going to be showing up at the Avon offices on a daily basis.
Maricela's phone conversations with her dad remind me a bit of Alicia's (LFMB)phone conversations with her dad.
That jabali asado looked delicious but from his reaction, I'm guessing that this is not exactly what Rog had in mind.
Carlos
Actually, today is lovely. Cold but bright sunshine. Ohioans stream out of their homes on a sunny day and weep with joy, kiss the ground and grovel through a few other pathetically grateful moves.
I actually like Chulo's idea of not going with the same old, same old engagement ring style and picking something more personal and interesting...but THAT? I don't hate the turquoise ring, per se. I had a ring very similar to that, except in a star shape, when I was a little kid. I think I bought it at a craft market stall for two or three dollars. But he kept talking about how elegant and sophisticated Alma is, so...turquoise heart shaped. Then again, he does not want Alma to marry Rogue, so well played. Then again again, Rogue is going to find out he picked it, so risky move.
Rogue is a piece of work. "I have no idea who her friends are (aside from my mistress). I have no idea what she likes. I cannot be bothered with doing any ring shopping myself; it isn't like I care *that* much, sheesh. She's just told me maybe we shouldn't even be dating. So obviously we should get married, ASAP." I like how things keep not working out well for him; I hope his bad luck continues.
*chicken breast
Glad a few of our basketball teams are still in the running. Mike and I look for UK to redeem themselves next year.
About the big bra. My daughter and I were in a store about 15 years ago and we saw a huge bra. We each put one of the cups on our heads and wandered around the department. Just one more store we can't visit again, sigh.
Have fun on your trip, Blue.
JudyB, I know what you mean about winter weather and we had that climate when I was growing up in northern Kentucky. Part of why I haven't been back since I left 45 years ago.
I'm liking Chatita a lot. She reminds me of Mrs. Armstrong who lived downstairs when I went back to Lexington after I was discharged. She was 65 (incredibly old...) and a little batty and used to feed me from time to time. That was about when Emilia and I started dating, and dear Mrs. Armstrong was convinced Emilia was jealous of her. Descanse en paz, Mrs. A.
Carlos, you gonna eat that mud bug?
OMG Emilian-- your bra in the store story is hilarious. As Blue Lass said who needs to go back to that store if they are that tight A...d
Sorry about VCU, Lee. And good luck to OSU, JudyB. Is that tomorrow? I guess you've got a couple of dogs in the hunt, Variopinta. Me I'm just sitting here waiting 40 more minutes to see if SU can tame another group of bears.
Güera
The ring shopping trip--at least Jesus was able to persuade Dona Susana, but not sure I agree with the choice of ring. Looks like it says memories of a fun weekend together instead of a lifetime commitment.
I am liking Julissa more in this TN, however. She's always seemed like an uptight ol' biddy before and now she's more fun.
Valentina could wear the large bra as a cap to play with. Loved Emelia's shopping story.
La Paloma
I can't add anything to the sports report. All New Mexico is in deep mourning, just don't bring up that big re-signing bonus raise have some wishing it will be a resigning bonus. Sheesh.
Thank you, Pablo, for the word tirria. It's interesting when another language has a word for something we don't, especially a concept that is so familiar like 'undeserved hatred'.
It was not in my vocabulary but I once heard a friend say: me tiene tirria.
I asked him what was that and he said that someone just hated him without a valid reason. I know we all hate something from time to time, but being obsessed with that hate without exchanging points of view or reasoning to arguments make it become ''the tirria''
I understand that language because it is my own (only with a different accent)! I had seen the same movie in its original version and then I saw it in neutral spanish out of curiosity... I am still wondering why they do things like that!
Jarifa
For instance, I used to watch TN from Chile (some of the best alongside with the Brazilians) and I loved that accent over all in South America.
Pololo, Mote con Huesillo, palta, together with the way they speak hooked me up and I remember setting my alarm clock so I couldn't miss the TN when in Chile the time zone changed and I had to get up at 3am, 4am and so on...
PURA SANGRE is one of the few TN I have watched entirely and I can say, nothing stopped me!
Neutral spanish has supposedly been created to make a movie understandable universally avoiding words or local slang from country to country, but, isn't that what give them the most flavor? IMO.
The censuring is really estupido!
Pablo- Thanks for "tirria". Such a useful word for tns because there is always someone who just hates someone else with a passion for not much reason. In CME we learned a phrase for a love-hate relationship. One of the characters described the love between the protagonists, who were on again, off again and constantly fighting, as "amor apache". Apparently the phrase goes back to early white settlers who took (unwilling) Indian wives. Very interesting.
The ring Chucho got Alta makes sense in an odd way. Alta is such a controlled person. Everything in her universe is perfect, and classy, and sterile-- like her apartment. And now we know she didn't have much of a childhood. A large solitaire diamond ring would have fit perfectly-- but what Alta needs is a whimsical ring meant for a 13 year old girl, to release/please her inner child. I think Chucho's real accomplishment in the end will be to bring whimsy and fun into Alta's life. I bet it will not just be Valentina who gets to enjoy learning to be a kid with Chucho.
Jarifa
Jarifa: For me is like going to another countries without leaving home. I can explore other cultures, met other people and their problems, enjoy their daily life and experiment something different.
Besides being entertained, I am learning, because new words, customs, and everything out of the ordinary becomes Extra-ordinary!
Thanks so much for this rollicking recap. Love your style : ) I agree with Vivi about Alma's ring. He does want to bring out her inner child. I think it's cute, even though that ring is tacky. It's funny that Alma spends all this time with Chucho and not much with Rog, hmmmm.....
I too liked the food at his surprise engagement party. That jabali asado looked really good. I kind of like that Chucho messed up the guest list and it should be loads of fun, except for the fuming Rog, lol.
I liked Dona Suzanna and Chucho's romp thru the mall, too funny.
I want to go shopping with Emila too, it would be a tremendous hoot : )
Pablo: Thanks for all the vocab. It helps me learn : )
Jarifa and Pablo: So agree with you both about the language. They should leave it in the native tongue. It helps to learn the dialect and different slang.
And I agree with the silliness of playing with the language. It's odd to see the kind of things Univision decides to censor. Remember all the blurring & bleeping of dog pooh remarks in Tontas? It does seem that the one group it is OK to mock in all of these Televisa shows is gay characters -- even those mistakenly identified as such like Jésus. Then when Uni picks it up for US audiences they can't let all the gay bashing stand. That is they can't let the language stand but they leave in all the cruel actions and visuals.

That was not a brilliant Aaron Craft game...he's had so many where he's phenomenal...on steals, layups etc. But he really really came through at the end. Waving off our star shooter and taking a three-point shot (which is not his strong suit) was incredible. As is his 3.9 grade point in pre-med. Can you tell I'm an Aaron fan?
On gayness slang, they often let long involved slang get through..."he's batting for the other side" or "He's batting on the left" but seem to bleep the short words. I never understood why they blanked out dog poo though. Guess they figure Americans are more squeamish than Mexicans. But they never hesitate to show bloody corpses on the news. To me, that's more obscene. And very upsetting.
Our Girly-Bears play tonight against Prairie View which is a little school near here. Brittney's last season.
Our guys are doing well in the NIT...I know...who cares?
Hi Mike. I was pulling for UK against Robert Morris in the NIT but they really didn't seem to want to be there.
I know...who cares?
Maybe if Blanca had some feathers?
Crawfish are in season and are every bit as popular here as in La. Also the oysters are superb right now.
Carlos
And honestly, wouldn't you rather win the NIT than be eliminated early like no. 1 seed Gonzaga. And Indiana is in a street fight right now.
Also, Univisión could be afraid of GLAAD...
Better safe than sorry...
I think Vero's bright green handset is supposed to help protect her brain from getting irradiated by her cell phone. (I daresay it may be too late... brain damage would explain a lot.) She's mentioned cell phone radiation before...
Thanks, Pablo V, for letting us know what our virgin ears are missing. I really don't care to listen to hateful slurs all night, but neither do I like silent bleeps. What is upsetting is not the sound of the words, but the fact that they're being said - whether I can hear them or not. So I can only hope that Fernando will learn a valuable lesson, or end up in jail with Plutarco and Onesimo from PESE.
Emilia, I'd go shopping with you. There are plenty of stores I wouldn't mind being banned from, as long as it was for a good cause. Running around with half a bra on my head seems like a good cause!
Congratulation on your victories, I am now a spectator without a "dog in the hunt"....68 teams go in to dance, and 67 go home losers...
Judy B. Charles Barkley is hard on the Big 10... He comes to Richmond and has a Golf Outing that benefits VCU every year...but I was not a fan of his until then, and still wonder what makes him an expert on college basketball.
Judy B. / Guera, Here is my e-mail address, so we can make sure we are connected for next year big dance 2014.

Vero is concerned about cell phone radiation. Sure, she could get an inobtrusive little earbud or headset like any old chump, but our Vero is all about maximum inconvenience and ostentation.
Dancing in the aisles is fun. I once put on inline skates and cruised the aisles of a K-Mart. Back when I was a touch more flexible!
Pablo, we have the Federal Communications Commission that performs a similar function.
Carlos... once again, you stimulate the gastric juices. It's been too long since I had a mess of decent crawdads and eons since etouffee. I've had oysters a couple of times this winter and they've been OK, but just OK. Glad to hear you're enjoying some decent ones.
Blue, of course there are people who don't dance in store aisles. What a silly question. Some of us prefer to sing along with the inexplicable musical selections. (There are songs that I've NEVER heard outside of Stop & Shop. I really need to learn how to shop faster.)
I was a little surprised by Fernando's apology to Xochi. The night before, I had assumed that Jessica had put him up to pretending to be hot for Xochi. (I had also thought that both she and Maricela were playing jokes on Xochi, but in retrospect it appears they really were trying to help and simply overestimated her sophistication.
BTW, did I imagine it, or did Xochi shorten her skirt (sort of)? I didn't get a good look, but I thought I saw Jesus do a double-take at her hemline as she went out of his office.
I'm glad that Susana is teetering towards Team Chucho. But I wonder how the turquoise heart ring will go over. Alma's probably too sweet to dislike it; I'm more interested in Rog's reaction.
I'd like to be included in the shopping fun! I had my husband paged at Home Depot last night, even though I could see him. It's no bra-cup hat, but it was fun. For me.
Lee, that loss was a heartbreaker for Iowa State. They played a fantastic game. I'm sure the controversy over "was his foot over, or does having the heel up make it okay?" controversy made their loss all the more bitter. Evidently the coach was so devastated, he couldn't even make an opening statement after the game.
I wish "winning" didn't involve someone else "losing"...especially when you know the losing team worked just as hard, spent just as many hours practicing, hoping, dreaming, and practicing some more.
I was out Friday evening and finally caught up with this. Are birthstones different in every country? If Alma's a February birth her birthstone is amethyst, which would make beautiful side stones for a diamond. (I'm seeing an emerald-cut diamond with two amethyst hearts at side stones).
Vero has some bloody nerve demanding to meet Jesus' (fictional) novia. Sensible divorced parents do not introduce new significant others to their kids until they are truly serious.
She's a jealous bitch and completely unworthy of the nice guy she's married to.
I think Rogue just wants full control of the company; he doesn't know Alma well enough to even think of marrying her.
"Turquoise can help Aquarius temper the urge for new things and return to an appreciation of their partner and the realities of their situation. It can also help counter indifference, which is one of the negative qualities that Aquarians can display toward those nearest to them."
So maybe the ring will help Alma appreciate the REALITY OF HER SITUATION with Rogue and overcome her INDIFFERENCE to Jesús. Here's hoping...
Urban is right. I am an Aquarius and my birthstone is an amethyst. I think the writers may have made a mistake here. When Chucho was talking to the jeweler and she said the birthstone was turquoise I was like Que, Que, What??? lol.
In that article, the list by astrological sign doesn't even have turquoise, though I'm sure you'd have no trouble finding lots of other lists elsewhere that say very different things.
Frankly, I had no idea there was so little agreement in these matters. Based on what I've seen in these three minutes of Googling, I don't think I would ever get someone a birthstone based on their month or sign unless I knew what THEY considered their "birthstone" (or their favorite stone, period).
ITA! Really, my smart phone could be called my Caray Caray Phone, because that's what I do most on it.
I do have a soft spot for Vero. I imagine she was devastated when Chucho left her messy self 6 years ago, then freaked out figuring out how to take care of herself and their daughter. She is wildly overcompensating. His reappearance undermines her house of cards and she is not handling it gracefully at all. I do hope she gets some therapy and comes around by the time this is all over.
