Corazon Indomable #3 Wed. 5/15

An almost kiss, an almost marriage proposal, an almost end of life, and no monkey sightings

Eusebio and Octavio are still having their argument about helping Maricruz and her family. Octav warns him to leave her alone and don’t mess with her. Eusebio doesn’t like this order.

Nuevo: Back at the shack at night, while the girls are sitting by a fire, Gramps is pulling out a box that was hidden under a mattress. Inside are a bunch of letters, and he pulls out a piece of paper with the address of Maricruz’s father. Commenters here were certain Grandpa knew where Daddy resided. Gramps has a flashback to his daughter (who looks uncannily, no, exactly, like Maricruz. She could be her twin) who is on her deathbed pleading to a younger, dark colored wig wearing Gramps to not tell Maricruz where her father is. So he talks himself into keeping quiet. But he does reveal that the dad does care about his daughter and has written many times to come see them over the years.

Octav and Lucia are talking. Lucia is wearing a dress that dramatically emphasizes her chest area, not that it needs more emphasizing. Octav can’t understand why no one has  expressed interest in buying the ranch. She lies that maybe no one wants to live in the country so far away from the big city. He says he can’t imagine living here so isolated with nothing to do. She says that if he got married, he’d have plenty to do, wink wink, nudge nudge. She talks about his marriage to $imona. He says he doesn’t want to surrender himself to marriage. He asks why they don’t ask $imona to buy the ranch, but she said that she doesn’t want more land. He says he’s going to ask her anyway. She insists that her millions are very beautiful and sexy and he could learn to love her. He replies that he would sooner marry Maricruz than $imona and her $imoneda.
He leaves to go find her.

Octav runs into Churchlady, I mean Simona. I’m not sure that I understand what this conversation is about but I will take a stab. Correct me in the comments and I will fix it here. Octav asks her to buy the property but she says Miguel will not sell it and even if she wanted to buy it, which she doesn't,  it’s mortgaged up to the hilt and it would be a losing proposition.

Back at the bath, laundromat, swimming pool, future passion pit?, the girls are washing clothes on rocks. Bad editing ensues, and we jump to the ranch. Ophelia is talking to Lucia. Ophelia is worried about Lucia. Lucia will calm down after Octav is gone and that savage girl is no longer around.

Mari runs into hunky Jose Antonio and They chat it up. He's a ranch hand, I assume. She asks him if he’s ever been in love. Then she describes what she’s feeling and he guesses he hasn’t been in love before, if that’s how one feels.
Lucia is sitting poolside knitting (I’m not kidding, she’s really knitting) and Octav tells her he saw Simona. Miguel comes out and Octav informs them that he now knows that the ranch has a second mortgage and wants to know what’s going on. Miguel hems and haws and says he has projects started but they haven't made money yet. Octav says he’s leaving because he doesn’t want to stay and die of hunger and oh yeah, before he goes, he’s getting married. Lucia assumes it’s to $imona, but he says it isn’t. He tells Miguel and Lucia that he’s marrying someone else. They ask who but he ain’t tellin’.

Simona visits Lucia. Lucia starts in by asking what she talked to Octav about. Nothing in particular, she replies, but Lucia tells her that Octav said that he is getting married. Lucia and Miguel thinks he’s joking and Simona thinks it must be a joke too because neither of them know of a girlfriend and he’s not marrying Simona. (Think, Lucia, think. Who did he say he would marry before marrying Simona?)
Meanwhile, Octav rides his horse to see Mari. He tells her that he came to see her Grandpa. Why? He wants to talk to him about Mari. More tender moments and then they kiss, finally! Oh wait, no they don’t. Close, but no cigar. Maricruz thought bubbles that she hopes he’s going to ask her gramps for her hand in marriage, and Octav thought bubbles that he’s sorry for doing this to MC, but she will come out ahead, and he will childishly get back at Miguel and Lucia for what they’ve done to his part of the ranch.

Miguel tells Eusebio to bring the cow to MC and to leave her alone. If he doesn’t and it gets back to Octav, Octav will break his head.

At the shack, Mari continues that far away love look as she talks to gramps, wondering what Octav wants to talk to him about. Eusebio comes over to bring the cow that was promised them. He tells Mari that it’s on loan only. Then he creepily waves to Soledad as he leaves, and she unfortunately waves back.

By the way, where’s the monkey?

Alejandro is in his office and I must say, I prefer this version of Cesar Evora with the clean flowy hair over the greased slicked back look he was sporting for Amor Bravio. A woman named Carola comes to visit. She is shown in and we get a glimpse of some hammy gams (thanks Jardinera) before they pan up to her face. And why! it’s none other than the woman who played that psycho mother Josefina in Cuando Me Enamoro. I’m not sure if Carola is supposed to be good or bad, but this actress always looks evil to me because she has a natural sneer about her, and it always makes her look like she’s up to no good, whether she is or not.

Mari is attempting to milk the cow and eewh, close up of cow udders. I’ve never seen them this close up before. Gramps asks where it came from. She tells him and he asks why and she says because he likes her. He tells her that he wouldn’t give her the cow if he didn’t think it would also get him some free milk, or something like that.

Alejandro is talking with Carola. She asks how he is and he said the last crisis has left him weak and not feeling great. He asks how the business is going for the new casino. She says it’s going well. So I'm guessing she's a business partner or she works for him. He says she’s going to have to take it over because he’s sick and alone. She asks why he never married, he says because he never got over the love of his life. She says that that woman left him and his daughter and that he always justifies what happened with her, instead of being mad at her. He said it was her jealousy that separated them and she took the child for revenge. He wants Carola to see to it that his fortune goes to MC if or when he dies.

Lucia shows Octav his honeymoon suite where he will live with his new bride.

Gramps is on the warpath walking to the ranch to have a word with that young whippersnapper who thinks he’s going to get some free milk from Mari just because he gave them a cow. Octav insist his motives are pure and innocent. He just wants to help.

Maricruz is leaning against a tree looking like one of those velvet canvas paintings wondering why Octav never came to talk to Gramps. Along comes Miguel and Eusebio on horses and ask what she’s doing there and about the cow and calf they gave her. She then asks if he’s seen Octav. He tells her not to bother him because he’s busy planning his wedding to someone refined and rich from the city.  She’s impactada, hurt and confused. She starts to cry and talk about her woes. She wants to die. She starts running.

Still no monkey sighting.

Miguel and Octavio argue. He wants to know if Octav is playing with them. He says no, he wants to marry and leave the area. Miguel says that Lucia will be the woman of the house and for Octav to not think that his new wife will be. Octav continues that if Miguel would just give him his part of the ranch, he wouldn’t be getting married. Miguel says that he doesn’t have a buyer. Octav lets him know that he found out about the second mortgage and that he knows he’s lying about the ranch. Miguel insists that he doesn’t know what it’s been like at the ranch and he had to get it. Octav is mad for being mislead, mad that he has no money to get from the ranch, and Miguel is going to pay for what he’s done.

Alejandro is seen by his doctor. He wants a point blank answer for how long he has left to live.

At the shack, grampa wonders where Mari is and sends Solita off to go look for her. Mari is sobbing thinking about how dumb she was for thinking that Octav would be interested in her. She makes her way to the bath, laundry, passion pit?, and now suicide site, to put herself out of her misery. As she stands there working up the courage to jump to her death, Solidad looks up and sees her, and tries to flag her down to get her attention. Running out of options, Solita screams and Mari finally notices her. Just as Mari realizes the mistake she was about to make, she slips on a rock and accidentally falls into the water. We are left with Maricruz not coming up to the surface. Will she live? I think we all know the answer to that.

Avances: Octavio informs brother and wife that he married Maricruz

Hi CathyX! I'm gonna watch this just because you're funny and I like reading your posts. Yea! I can't wait!

Thanks Cynderella.
This is up everyone.

Cathyx:

Can you tag your recap? People will have trouble finding it : )

Yep. A label/tag, and perhaps a jump break/page break. Now, on to read your great recap. Still haven't had a chance to watch the show at all this week!

Could someone explain how to do the jump break and the tag?

Cathyx:

On the right side where you post, you will see a box that says "Label" Click on that and find Indomable and click on that. Then you have tagged your recap.

The point break is on the edit bar above your recap. It looks like a blue page cut in half. After your second paragraph click your mouse right under that. Then go up to the broken page and click on that. You should see a broken line right under your second paragraph. Then hit edit and when your recap is up on the front page, you will see Read More and when you click that, there will be the rest of your recap. Hope that helps : )

I'm sorry it isn't edit. The button is update when you are all done click on that, and you should be good to go.

Cathyx- You can also look at the e-mail I sent you with the instructions and a screen shot of the jump break.

Thanks Madelaine, you're a good teacher. Vivi, I didn't remember that those things were also in the email. Thank you both.

Cathyx-

Great recap! I loved your lines about the gift cow meaning getting the milk for free. LOL!

Octavio's plan to marry Mari just for revenge on bro and SIL is not only childish, but cruel. He doesn't see Mari as a person at all.

What happened with the whole marrying $imona thing? He asked her (sort of) on Monday, and then just dropped it. What happened? Was he just messing with her head for the hell of it?

I don't care what Mari's mom's dying wish was. It's just wrong to have Mari living in abject poverty when she has a rich papa who's looking for her. And it's wrong to separate a father from his child-- unless he's dangerous or a criminal. It seems like Mari's mom's only beef with him was thinking he was cheating on her. NOT enough reason to condemn her daughter to a life without her father and in poverty.

Vivi, I thought the same things, what happened to the initial proposal, I may have missed some convo explaining that, and that Mari's mom's jealousy. Maybe I missed that too. There was some very odd editing during the scene with gramps and his dying daughter, so maybe they cut out the explanation.

Well, it looks like I'm going to have to watch this. Don't know how much time I'll have to comment, but thanks to the recappers, so far. You've drawn me in. Glad I saved the last two episodes. Now I'll go back and watch them!

cathyX--Loved the phrases worth a chuckle and a LOL regarding:
Maricruz' mother
Lucia's daytime wear
$imona's beautiful and sexy millions
future passion pit
Lucia knitting by the pool
then they kiss, finally! Oh wait, no they don’t.
By the way, where’s the monkey?
Will she live? I think we all know the answer to that.

Since he bought the cow, isn't he allowed to get the milk for free? Oh, he didn't actually "buy the cow" yet. This is so confusing!

Cathyx:

Wonderful recap, I too liked the milk reference, lol.

I too feel that Octavio is kinda using Mari, but I think he thinks he is really helping her, plus he has that revenge thingy going on with Lucia and Miguel. Bad on one point good on the other. I'm waiting to see what else happens with them.

Could it be that Soledad is just deaf and not mute? That was one heck of a loud scream she let out.

I too am in agreement about Abue, but he seems to be of the very old school. He thinks he is keeping the death bed promise, but he really should do what you said Vivi. There is no reason in the world that Mari and her sister should live in the poverty they are in.

I too am liking Alejandro's "luke" much more relaxed. I have never seen him with long hair, only slicked back. I hope, if he is indeed dying, he gets to change his will before he does. I don't trust his bidness associate at all, she has the "I'll take everything you got, the hell with your kid" look about her.

As bad as Maricruz' clothing is, Lucia's is just as bad, on the other end of the spectrum. She needs to dress down some, and why the heck is she knitting, in the heat of all things?

Also I wanted to know about those paintings all over the hacienda. They have the look of Frida Kahlo or Diego Rivera.

Cathyx:

Thanks about the teaching : )

Well done, CathyX and I loved your Churchlady reference to Simona. I assume the actress can be quite attractive with the right make-up and hairdo. Hopefully she isn't always relegated to ugly duckling parts...that would be pretty tough on the ego!

Did anyone else think the huge garishly colored artwork on the honeymoone suite was just HORRIBLE? Gah, that would put me off love-making for sure. Ditto for close-ups of cow udders. Oh well.

Off-topic now. Nanette, Sara...any good recipes using quinoa? Student of mine (a guy actually) brought quinoa pancakes to class and they were good, but the recipe used 5 eggs!!!!! Need something else...not complicated but tasty (or is this any oxymoron with quinoa?)

JudyB:

I don't have to use whole eggs. You can use egg white instead or egg substitute.

JudyB:

You can also use some flax seed in the recipe as a substitute for the fat lost from the eggs.

Judy- I just cook quinoa like rice. Nothing special. But I find it has a fuller, nuttier flavor than rice does.

Great recap, Cathy!

So Octavio wants to marry Maricruz to upset his bro and SIL and he thinks Maricruz will benefit from this, too, because he will leave her his part of the land? Does that mean that he will give up the money himself? How about needing it to live in the city, what happened to that? Does he plan to get a job???
This is such a typical galan move and he will certainly have to pay for this when Maricriz gets all smart and sassy.

I think Soledad was severely traumatized/brutalized and left for dead when Don Abuelo found her. She may very well be deaf, but she has some vocal function because she was able to screech as Maricruz reached the edge of the cliff. Perhaps further along in the story, she may "recover" her voice.
Just a theory..
SFChicaBonita

Cathy this was great. I guess right now the galan is not quite the great guy he will eventually become, because no matter how you shake it, he is sort of using Mari to get back at bro. Reminds me of one of my favorite Russian novels.

Cesar almost always looks fine, but I agree, this loose, long haired look i rather fetching. As for Carola, I don't trust her, but I swear it's the actress. After watching her as Josefina, I just can't get over that sneering face. Lord she's so good at it. Always forget her good turn in Pasion, she just does bad so much better.

Judy---quinoa is great with just about anything. I sometimes replace couscous with it in recipes.I do a Moroccan chicken with chicken thighs and then make warm quinoa with a little olive oil, almonds ( or walnuts) and cranberries to go with it. I also use for work lunches and make cold salads with it. Made one last week with asparagus, the quinoa, small dices of cherry tomatoes, and Monterrey jack cheese all with a lite herb vinaigrette I make.

It wasn't proposal to Simona. He simply was thinking out loud. Conversations about Mari's mom's jealousy would be later.
Alegria

Cathyx: Thanks for the great recap.

“Bad editing ensues, and we jump to the ranch.“—what is up with the editing in this thing? It’s all over the map.

I’m confused. I thought Octavio proposed to Simona.

“By the way, where’s the monkey?”—I was thinking the same thing.

“Avances: Octavio informs brother and wife that he married Maricruz.”—not “going to marry” but “married”?!

Nanette

Gracias a ti Cathyx

In the opening credits they show Lucia giving Mari a necklace, what do you want to bet she accuses her of stealing it? Do you have a bingo square for that?

Hurry Eduardo before I give up on this.

The mono is in a very strict union &
can only work 2 days a wk.

Vivi: “I don't care what Mari's mom's dying wish was. It's just wrong to have Mari living in abject poverty when she has a rich papa who's looking for her. And it's wrong to separate a father from his child-- unless he's dangerous or a criminal. It seems like Mari's mom's only beef with him was thinking he was cheating on her. NOT enough reason to condemn her daughter to a life without her father and in poverty.”—I so agree with you. Maybe there’s more to it than what we’ve been told so far.

Madelaine: “I don't trust his bidness associate at all, she has the ‘I'll take everything you got, the hell with your kid" look about her.’- was thinking the same thing.

Judyb: Don’t like quinoa. Or I should say, don’t like to cook with quinoa. It gets all over the place. It’s Alive!!

If Soledad was born deaf, she wouldn’t be able to learn how to talk, would she—not having any experience at it?

Nanette, I would not have included that in the avances if they hadn't shown that that was what we are going to see. I recorded the program and it was at the end, so it's not a spoiler. I haven't looked ahead at all.

Nanette:
Deaf people do learn how to talk. It depends on a lot of things: family, schools available, type of deafness etc. She hasn't had any medical treatment or diagnosis to assess her true condition. There are many schools for the deaf which include speaking in their programs. A lot of deaf people prefer to use sign and not speak. Helen Keller was deaf and blind and she learned how to speak. I have a friend who has worked for years(20 plus) at the State School for the Deaf in Fremont, CA. She is fully integrated into the deaf community and signs more than speaking. Again it is totally dependent on the situation and in Soledad's case - she needs a medical diagnosis. I just suspect her learning to talk might be a plot point, but they could drop it like a lot of tn's do and leave things unresolved.
SFChicaBonita

Cathyx---Thank you. This is your first recap for me and you had me laughing right from the start---Back at the bath, laundromat, swimming pool, future passion pit?
That line should go into the Hall of Fame. When one stops to think about it, it's true but it sounded so funny at first.

I really like this novela so far. The country ranch life, colorful
characters, [grandpa and India Maria,] hidden family secerets and a beautiful Mexican goddess-Ana Brenda. What more could one ask for? It's great and will only get better. Oh yes---Octavio is a handsome hunk for the ladies.

Madelaine---Thanks, I'm going to pay attention to thoes paintings.

those--I'm sorry, I always get that one wrong.

Quinoa: Just like rice has worked for me, and managing rice was a major accomplishment.

I also find quinoa works for a simple "one pot" with broth substituted for at least part of the water and with a bit of chicken, some onion, mushroom, carrot, etc., and perhaps a green vegetable added a bit later, does well. esp. if no meat, put in a bit of some sort of oil, be it butter, olive oil or the like.
I find the q. to be very forgiving of erratic cooking times. Essential for my cooking.

Shuffle, shuffle.
This one is too early in the evening for me to watch even semi-regularly. Still haven't seen more than 1/2 an episode, so thanks much to the recappers. I can't really comment on how well you all are capturing the nuances of the show, but the prose is delightful on its own.

The female lead just doesn't cut it as an innocent waif for me. the scrabbling for potatoes (between the rows of oranges?) looked plain awkward. Perhaps when the locale takes the shift indicated in Vivi's intro she will have better success portraying Mari's country-ness against a more sophisticated milieu, but as is, she's acting like she was just let out after years of house arrest, looking at the world with overly wide-eyed amazement and wonder.

Then again, is it the actress fault that the writers have her just now discovering/being discovered by men? just how old (young) is she supposed to be? mid teens? Late teens? Gramps must've been quite formidable until very recently to have scared off all the other "peasant" boys, wayward ranch hands, and such until now.

I agree that if Octavio is our protagonist, he's already in need of redemption. He may not treat our heroine as a sub-human with gratuitous cruelty, but he is still not treating Mari as a person deserving of dignity in her own right.

thanks so much to all for the background on the India Maria character. No wonder her role seemed so odd here.

Cathyx-I'm sneaking onto Caray at work, but I wanted to tell you how awesome this is. I've only gotten as far as "Back at the bath, laundromat, swimming pool, future passion pit?," and the recap is already filled with fabulous lines. Forgive me if I repeat some since I've not looked at comments, either.

"She insists that her millions are very beautiful and sexy and he could learn to love her."

"Lucia is wearing a dress that dramatically emphasizes her chest area, not that it needs more emphasizing."

I'll finish reading your recap when I get home, but so far it's wonderful!

Sara

Cathyx: I didn't mean I thought you put in a spoiler. It was more a rhetorical question. I was stunned that he'd go ahead a marry her instead of just threatening to do it. I'm sorry if my comment came off as a criticism.

SFChicaBonita: I know that Helen Keller was not born deaf, and had actually spoken a few words before she went deaf. Of course, Solita might not have been born deaf. I'm just wondering, if she was, would she be able to learn how to speak not having had the experience of it?

JudyB--Shoot me an e-mail, I have a FABULOUS quinoa recipe. Are you ok with nutritional yeast?

PS: As a knitter, I had a hard time believing that Lucia was knitting. I watched closely and she wasn't making any of the right moves.

Sara

Thanks for the great comments everyone.

Nannette, I didn't take it as such. I hesitated to add it, but since it aired over TV, I figured it was fair game to add.
I guess the general plot is no secret, if you read the synopsis on the Univision website, it tells us that they get married. I am hoping that once we get out of this set-up phase of the story, it will get rolling and be more interesting and worth sticking with.

Yup. One more comment from me.

My favorite part of the recap is all the references to the monkey. Funny!

ITA about the udder close up. Udderly gross.

Sara

This comment has been removed by the author.

With regards to Solita making a sound, I hope they don't go down the road that if she does either learn to speak but stays deaf or gets her hearing and starts speaking, that they don't have her speaking clearly as if she has never been deaf. Because that never would happen in real life. People who are deaf never speak as one who has normal hearing. Only those who have lost their hearing late in life continue to speak normally.

And I saw the monkey. It was near Mari's jacal, when Octavio came.
Alegria

Nanette,
My understanding from my friend is they can, but in many cases choose not to. It can be a personal/cultural choice.
SFChicaBonita

Octavio phrased the question to $imona as, "Would you marry me if I asked?" But he kept pushing the question, and got offended that she hesitated in aswering him. Then, when she basically said she would, loved him since childhood, wouldn't expect much from him as a husband, and would save his family financially, he backed off a bit and said he didn't deserve her and that his bro and SIL shouldn't get their way. If I were $imona, I would cunfused as heck about whether or not we were engaged! That Octavio is into playing games with women.

Cathyx: I try not to read the introductory info--I don't read book blurbs until after I read the book, either--however, it is out there and fair game. I did read a little somewhere of what she becomes--and now that Alejandro and Carola were talking about a casino, it makes sense. Looking forward to that part. Not so into it right now, though still early days. I find the galan a bit blah--not as much as CdlF in AB.

I'm finding this time slot a little hard. It creeps up on me before I'm ready.

"Octavio's plan to marry Mari just for revenge on bro and SIL is not only childish, but cruel. He doesn't see Mari as a person at all."

This reminded me of the entrada from Marimar:

"Cuando lo quise yo
por revancha me enamoró"

That sums up this part of the story. I've never seen Marimar but I'm familiar with the story.

It looked to me like Maricruz is letting her dark roots grow out. And Cupcake would love those dresses, well, before she discovered that jeans were more practical for a hacienda.

This is going to be pretty mindless. Perfect for summer.

SFChicaBonita: Thanks for the info. I love learning new stuff.

It seems that Solita was either born deaf or went deaf as a small child. I don’t really think deaf-mute means a person has something that physically keeps them from speaking or making vocalizations. But you can’t learn to speak without ever hearing, unless you have special speech therapy, and Solita certainly did not have that. Found this on a site about the deaf learning to speak:

“Deaf people who had hearing loss before or around learning to speak have had to rely on visual and tactile methods of learning speech and have had to go through speech therapy. While the vocal cords of deaf people are perfectly intact, it's much harder to speak correctly without a feedback system. It's much like when you hear someone singing to their iPod and they're singing totally out of key and sound crazy, even if they can sing well (or relatively well) when they hear themselves. With deaf people who have never heard their own voice or the voice of others, it's much harder to self-monitor speech. It's also impossible for someone who is born deaf to know what some or all sounds sound like (depending on the extent of their hearing loss.) So for example, if someone has never heard an "s" sound, it's hard to emulate it.

Some deaf people speak in broken English cause English is not their first language. For deaf people who have grown up with American Sign Language, or whatever other local sign language, English is their second language. So much like a foreigner, they tend to apply the grammar of their own language to English. Just as a foreign speaker might create phrases like "I go to store" or "She do it at her own," someone whose first language is a signed language is speaking English as a foreign speaker as well….

The only exposure a deaf person has to spoken language is intentional exposure, such as speech therapy or being in a school that advocates speech only. Not only that, but children are taught to read much later than they are taught to speak, so if a deaf person has not had access to signed language, their first access to language is much later than a hearing person's, which can affect the brain's ability to grasp language.

Even though deaf people and hard of hearing people have full access to written language, someone born deaf/hard of hearing doesn't have the same sound associations to letters on the page that someone with hearing does. So they might know the words in written form, but they aren't sounding them out in their heads when reading the way a hearing person is. As a result, even people with hearing loss who have exposure to written language often still miss out on details that are only audible….It's also important to remember that even though some deaf people have a "deaf voice" or speak in broken English, other deaf people master speech and language quite well, so it's impossible to tell the full extent of someone's hearing loss based on their speech and language skills.”

Thanks, Vivi.

I don't need Soldad to learn to speak, but it would be wonderful if at some point she has the opportunity to actually learn sign language, and also to write if she doesn't know how already, so that she can fully articulate her thoughts. Have we been given any clues if Maricruz and Solita have been taught to read and write? Grandpa seems to know how, since he has those letters, so I hope he spent some time teaching at least Maricruz. It would have been hard to teach Solita to read without some special teaching skills, since she can't associate the individual letters with sounds.

Good comments and thanks Vivi for the info on deaf people learning speech...all we need now is for our very own CarayCaray expert Schoolmarm to check in and add her dos centavos.

Also thanks all for the quinoa recipes and advice. Nanette, I know what you mean about it going everywhere, after I rinsed it, before cooking, I was chasing little pods everywhere. I will try the broth idea, as well as some other suggestions. So far, I don't find it as tasty as jasmine rice but I sautéed some onions and garlic in a bit of olive oil to put with it today and that really helped.

Sara, yes, I'll write. I'm okay with nutritional yeast if it's for a yummy recipe.

Great recap Cathyx!

I liked the "and then they kiss, finally! Oh wa it, no they don’t."

Hee!

Octavio is definitely in need of redemption already but at least he is not purposely trying to hurt our protagonista like other galanes. That always bothers me more. He is being entitled, insensitive, short-sighted and stubborn.

I don't actually find Maricruz so out there as a character. She is supposed to have grown up in extreme poverty, isolated and without the guidance of another woman. Girls growing up in extreme poverty in rural areas tend to not attract good suitors and instead are alot of the times victims of nasty men. It's really sad. So I can see her grandpa just teaching her to avoid getting close to any men thinking that's a way to protect her.

"It looked to me like Maricruz is letting her dark roots grow out."

I think she's supposed to have her hair burned from the sun.

PS:
I always get the weirdest captchas: "What erogeno"

I did find one thing odd last night. Maricruz said Octavio was the only man who had ever treated her kindly. But the hunkalicious fella carrying the straw bale, who talked with her about what being in love felt like, sure seemed a whole-lotta-nice to me. He listened respectfully and answered kindly. And they obviously knew each other and she trusted him enough to initiate that conversation.

Vivi in DC,
Thanks for expanding upon my brief statements about deafness, speaking, etc.

SFChicaBonita

Knitting? Really? Why not leaf through a fashion magazine or file her nails as she lounges by the pool? It would fit the character better.

As wild as MariCruz supposedly is, she must also have been super-sheltered. For her to immediately want to commit suicide because the only person who's been nice to her decides to get married is really stretching the story! What if when she met him he was already engaged, just a nice person? They've never even had a 'getting to know you' conversation. He's kind to her and pow! she's in love, just like that? And not only that, but expects him to feel the same way about her? Does such innocence really exist?

Judyb: Love jasmine rice. Also love basmati rice.

I'm finding this time slot a little hard. It creeps up on me before I'm ready.

I'm sort of the same way, but I'm not keeping up with PEAM (anymore)and when AV ends, it will be a perfect time.

Jarocha-thanks for your insights. I suspect I am going to have to constantly remind myself of the culture difference. I will also have to stop trying to impose any sort of "reality" (or what I think should be "reality") on what is clearly a more old-fashioned melodrama.

Speaking of old fashioned melodrama, will they have cellphones in this one? I understand not having them at the ranch, they may not get service, but when we will be at the casino, will Maricruz come into the 21st century? Does she even know what television is?

oooo...good question, Cathyx. Marimar had none of that (er...being made in 1994 it makes sense.)

One more reason for me to tune in!

I don't think this is just cultural differences. I'm going by why I suspect but I'm also not as familiar with life in extreme poverty. My family did not have much money when I was a kid but we never endured hunger and my experiences meeting people in extreme poverty are limited to those living in slums next to the cities. My mother grew up in a small town in Oaxaca so she is more familiar with poverty in the rural environment than me and alot of what I believe comes from her tales. She, for example, knew once a young woman from the mountains that the family of a friend of her brought to work for them and she got pregnant but had no idea how, she had to be explained the she had sex with her boyfriend and she remembered that but didn't understand that she was having sex at the time.

I think we forget just how crammed with stimulation, info, sounds, images, etc our lives are. This stuff is not about intelligence, just exposure to lots of stuff (for lack of a better word). People whose lives are far simpler do get that gee whiz reaction to things that seem common place to us, and to us it comes off as a bit oafish. When I was in the Peace Corps, my neighbors just loved looking through the Newsweeks PC gave us. They would look at every single picture and ask me to tell them what each story was about. But these were folks who didn't have electricity, there for no tv's, the only reading materials were the Bible and print outs for homework for the students, and any kind of paper good was expensive. And here was this thing in full color filled with images, which was disposable! I certainly learned to look at things differently. But never thought my neighbors were bumpkins because they couldn't fathom such a luxury of waste and entertainment.

Jarocha - I'm sure I didn't express myself well. I think what I'm thinking of is over protected children. Most of my students are very worldly. I need to remember that some children are very innocent. Even into their 20s.

I think Vivi has another good point too.

Vivi and CathyX:

Could you let me know how to email one or both of you about providing back up for the Wednesday recap? Vivi, you mentioned to me earlier that CathyX might require backup occasionally. Sorry I didn't respond earlier to you. This has been a busier than usual week for me.

Oh, BTW, since several have asked about MC's age, although Ana Brenda is actually 26 years old, a few episodes down the road MC will say that she is 19 years old.

Ellie- Is that you? I sent you and Cathy an e-mail earlier today.

Hi Vivi, no, I used a "pen name" when I posted last week telling you I would be interested in recapping, and you left a post telling me to email you about providing back up for Wednesdays. But for some reason I can no longer access the email address I created for that pen name, so I need to create a new one before sending you the email. What do you think of "Latina in MD", since I am in Maryland?

That's a great name neighbor! Email me and we can see what works out. Ellie just volunteered to share Wednesdays, but there are other days.

I watched my 6-6:30 dose and I saw them (MariCruz and Octavio) kissing. Since she doesn't know what that is or what is going to do to her, why did she allowed it? Isn't she afraid she might get pregnant?

I also noticed that ''there's three Alvarez'' in TN right now:
Elizabeth
Claudia and
Karla

One is a prostitute, the other one just looks like one and the other traded to get what she wanted. Wanna guess?
