Corazon Indomable Capitulo 9 Thursday, May 23, 2013 Fun and Games Down at the Ranch; Not So Much Fun in the Woods.

This episode follows two main narrative streams—the continuing “education” of Maricruz at the ranch and the sudden shift in Solita’s life in the wild.   This recap combines scenes for continuity.  If I missed a detail you liked, jump in with it.

Team Maricruz and Team Lucia square off  in a battle over their turf.

  • Gramps brings Monktavio to MC to make her happy.  Meanwhile, human Octavio muses over their future and how to make a living.  He considers leaving MC behind, with Gramps, while he finds work elsewhere.
  • MC’s peaceful time propping her injured foot comes to an end when Lucia joins her on the lawn.  Lucia shows MC the baby clothes she is creating, but their happy moment is interrupted when Monktavio flings himself at Lucia. Shrieking, she informs MC of her monkey allergy. The beast is banished to the bedroom forever!
  • Octavio attempts to sell 10 cows to a neighboring rancher. Sad to say, the poor quality cattle aren’t worth buying, so no deal, no money for our chulito.  He returns to the ranch to learn that he and MC are expected to turn out in some decent toggery for a formal lunch with the Riveras, old friends.  MC protests, but Octavio insists.  MC puts on a longer halter dress, similar to Lucia’s wardrobe.  No word on where or how she got it.

  •  MC likes this soup better than the last one—so much, in fact, that she slurps it and cleans the bowl with her finger.  She refuses the wine, saying it makes you drunk. Octavio tells her she needs to respond to the toast with at least one sip, so she tries. However, Awfelia places a plate of snails in front of her at just that moment.  Her reaction to the snails results in a spray of wine across the table and onto Sra. Rivera.  The others protest, while MC explains snails are just poor river bugs and shouldn’t be eaten.

  •  The hubbub stirs up enough adrenaline that MC flees the table at a run, with no crutch and no limp on her injured ankle. Octavio sends Awfelia to the bedroom with orders for MC to return to the table.  MC refuses, saying she knows she can’t eat properly, that God gave her ten fingers to eat with.  Awfelia snottily demands compliance and MC says “Andale!  Get out!”

  •  MC hugs Monktavio and berates herself as an idiot.  This house has nice things, but it makes her sad and angry.  Octavio returns to the bedroom, where they discuss MC’s table manners. His anger softens as they talk and he lowers himself to the floor (literally to her level.)  He gathers her in his arms (and legs), saying that he is all she has and he’ll end up loving her. Smoochies and snuggles ensue.

Another family member is added to the fun.

  •  Lucia shares a letter with Miguel:  her charming cousin, Ester, is returning to the ranch for a visit.  She doesn’t share that she intends to let Ester join the battle against MC.  As our cast members share their thoughts on Cousin Ester, we learn that she’s a meddler, bossy, flirtatious, bad luck, and pure hell. In a word: overrated.  MC, propping her foot on a stool in the kitchen and chatting with her allies, learns she needs to watch out for the new girl in town.

  •  Meanwhile, the old girl Lucia isn’t letting up.  She comes to MC’s bedroom and explains that the dresser and mirror, along with the elaborate standing cheval mirror, are going away and into Ester’s room. She makes some catty remarks implying that MC isn’t good enough for real furniture anyway.  Ester is just so special and picky (like the princess and the pea?)  MC looks sadly at the large mirror.  The dresser may not be a problem, since she only owns enough clothing for half a drawer.

  • Awfelia, always eager to turn the knife in MC’s back, comes to the kitchen to tell her the dresser and mirror have been moved.  MC keeps her cool and amiably says “Esta bien.”

  •  Octavio returns home and notices the missing furniture. MC attempts a lame explanation, but hunky husband demands details from his sis-in-law. When she blathers about how fabulous Ester needs a fabulous room, he responds in disgust.  He loudly declares that MC doesn’t need a mirror, she never changes, she’s always fresh, beautiful, young.  Ester requires a mirror to see all the makeup she plasters on.

  •  Ester arrives, wearing a skimpy sweater and the city version of Daisy Dukes. She flirts with Octavio and asks Lucia about his marriage. Lucia replies “It’s a disaster” and invites Ester to help her get rid of the bride.

  • MC asks Octavio if he regrets marrying her.  He doesn’t, but he does miss his old life

Solita’s Sorrow
[Please note:  These segments show Ewwsebio in action as a violent sexual predator.  They are painful to anyone with the milk of human kindness in their veins. Feel free to put your hands over your eyes as you read, or skip them entirely.]

  •    Solita is taking laundry from the line when Ewwsebio arrives with the food.  He stays to flirt with her, bowing and doffing his hat (to reveal his greasy locks).  He gives her a bracelet, placing it on her wrist and kissing her cheek.  Gramps arrives and calls “Que haces aqui? (salud)  Ewwsebio leaves and the innocent Solita waves goodbye.

  • Later, Solita is in the woods, gathering fruit (?), when Ewwsebio returns, bragging that Solita will know what a real man is like. He wraps his arms around her and slobbers kisses on her face. She pushes him away and tries to fight, then pokes his eye and escapes. She runs away.

  •  Ewwsebio catches Solita a little distance away.  This time, he overpowers her and pushes her to the ground, climbing on top of her. [Remainder of this scene not shown on the broadcast, but was online.] Her face is silently screaming and then we see only a closeup of his hand pinning down her wrist, while her hand opens and closes, clutching in agony over and over. (I was so hoping she could find a rock and bash his head in.)

  • Ewwsebio arises, smug in his triumph, while Solita lies crumpled on the ground.  He leaves with no acknowledgement of the tender plant he trampled.

  •  Solita stumbles to the water nearby and wades in, fully clothed.  She washes herself, over and over, in a vain effort to cleanse the pain and the shame.  She rips the bracelet from her arm and throws it as far as she can.

  •  Gramps wonders why Solita hasn’t returned.  We see her crouched against the wall of an abandoned barn, wet and shivering in her mute suffering, while images of her violation play in her head.

  • Grampa goes to search and meets Solita returning.  She is still wet, feverish and shaking. He puts her to bed at home (no change to dry clothes??), promising hot herbal tea. She lies still, tears leaking down her haunted face.

  •  Eww returns to the ranch, snickering at his adventure while Awfelia demands to know where he was. He claims that she’s his girl and thwacks his whip on his thigh in celebration.

  • Two days later, Solita continues sick and suffering, as MC discovers when she comes to visit.  MC and Gramps feel that Solita was injured or hurt somehow, and they beg her to tell them what happened.

Advance:  Ester flirts with Octavio; MC objects strongly.

Comments:
La Paloma- The lump in my throat and tears in my eyes after reading about Solita' s violation is too much right now for me to comment. So I'll just say thank you for the recap and for taking one for the team by having to do this episode.

La Paloma:

Thank you so much for this great recap. I had to look away during the rape of Solita. So sorry you had to recap that part.

Poor Maricruz. Octavio is trying something, amazingly to make some money. Too bad the cows are in such bad shape. At least Maricruz is wary of Lucia now. I don't like Ester already. She will gladly help Lucia to run Maricruz right off.

Ewww-sebio needs that anvil like now, not later.

Best scene of the evening was Moctavio being left on the bed just looking so cute!

Thank you La Paloma. My first comment on this tn. I didn't think I would like this one but I liked Anna Brenda and the actor, who plays Octavio, on my very first tn, Teresa.
I like Mc's simple and logical expression- that God gave us 10 fingers to use them for eating. Isn't that very true!!!
I don't like the Ewwsebio -Solita scene. so FF on this.
Looking forward for MC's father's rescue. For a change would Cesar Evora be nice here? I admire his good acting, deep voice and good looks.

I thought the Solita actress was great in these scenes and gave us a very strong performance.

I didn't record last night's episode but I'll be able to see it On Demand later. Now I know which parts I'll need to FF because I don't want to go through another rape storyline like in AB.

Such a painful and disturbing episode. You described Eusebio's macho nonchalance very well when you wrote "He leaves with no acknowledgement of the tender plant he trampled."

Although we talk about fast-forwarding through these awful rape scenes, the other scenes are, for the most part, simply more subtle forms of abuse and violence. The major action in dramas (and to a lesser extent in the comedies) is about people acting in cruel and hurtful ways to others. We hang in in order to enjoy a few days of happy endings after months and months of pain and anxiety. But it's a very troubling format.

Well-written and well-organized, La Paloma. Sorry you had such an ugly episode to recap.

This is such a horrendous event in the midst of others that involve so much suspension of disbelief.

Elizabeth Alvarez is in great form in her villana, like she was in Las Vias del Amor, another novela with a lot of suspension of disbelief distinguished by a few great performances. I'm still not sure about this one.

I posted this comment on yesterday's blog, but I want to repost again here: Yes the writing is a bit rough, and the editing is even rougher. But I suggest the doubters hang in there a little longer. This TN is a rollercoaster ride. It will have some so-so episodes throughout, but some brilliant ones too - not in the editing department where they often mess up, but in the acting and dialogues. Without spoiling it, the next two weeks won't be fun, but after that I assure you MC will no longer be a victim.

Octavio, who should know better, trust his brother and Lucía, and even when he never sees the results, he insist in believing that doesn't learn how to behave is because she doesn't want to.

After the ''horrible'' experience with the snails, Octavio goes up to see her and asks:

-WHY don't you learn?

Maybe is because he is always ''sooooo busy'' and never have the time to take care of the problem by himself (hands on). Noooo, instead, he has time to kissy-kissy-touchy-touchy and everything else!

If only he could spend less time kissing and more time educating his wife another rooster would sing!

La Paloma, you really handled this painful episode with great skill and finesse. Thanks for doing such a great job.

We all knew that this was coming but I was expecting Eusebio to toy with Solita (and us) for a bit longer. I suppose a rape is a required element for a successful telenovela so perhaps they are getting it out of the way early for us.

So here comes Ester? I'm guessing that she bears little resemblance to the biblical version. Let's hope that she gets seated across from Maricruz at dinner. My calculations show that she has at least one more wine spew to go.

Carlos

Pablo- Octavio is LAZY. I don't know why he's so quick to believe it's Maricruz who is either lying or too stubborn to learn, when he has seen and heard how his bro and SIL treat Mari with contempt.

Moctavio was adorable hanging out on the bed alone, and snuggling up to Maricruz. He looks like he would be happier in the shack. At least there he gets to go where he pleases, and people aren't screeching and jumping away from him when he reaches for them, like Lucia. Plus, I think Solita could use a cuddly pet right about now.

She bears more resemblance to Daisy Duke (waist down anyway) and with the same genes I am sure she will never trip over with those high heel boots walking in the grass... Lucía has perfected that technique so far...

Where is she coming from? The 80s?

La Paloma, thanks for the recap. Your format worked well on this tough episode.
JudyB, you nailed it on the degrees of cruelty and abuse. I am finding this TN pretty horrifying and hard to watch. LatinaInMD, I appreciate your encouragement and I'll stick with it a while.
Yes Pablo Villalobos! Why can't Octavio devote a few minutes to a simple table manners discussion, not to mention manners in general, like how to greet people. No, we get a second dinner disaster, and how many more? Octavio is ridiculously insenstive and a galan failure.
Clara

Next 2 weeks would be hard to watch, but then. Then sun will shine on the Maricruz side. And there will be more reasons to smile than to cry.
Alegria

Complaining and not doing anything about it is not worth the complaint.

If you want something done, do it yourself.

Octavio, the night has 8 hours you could be devoting to your husbandy chores, during the day, keep your hand off MariCruz and be more PYGMALION than just PIG...

Thank you La Paloma. I'm sorry you had to recap such an awful episode. We all knew that Solita was going to be harmed in some way by that horrible man. I wonder if anyone will figure it out.

That's all we need, another villain. And I hate it when the man just can't manage to push the aggressive female away. And of course, they are seen by the one person who will misinterpret it. THAT DRIVES ME CRAZY.(Sorry to shout, but I'm really sick of it)

La Paloma---Great recap even on a tough night. My favorite line was,
The dresser may not be a problem since she only ownes enough clothing for half a drawer. That one made me laugh.

Right Carlos---I don't think that this Ester will be like the biblical Ester.

She's a meddler, bossy, flirtatous and bad luck---maybe so but Ester hasn't come up against Maricruz yet. She will have met her match.

I don't have words for last night's
awful few minutes. I can only say that I have seen enough tn's to know that a just fate awaits the diguesting/terrible EWWsebio.

Solita/Gaby Mellado must be given credit for excellent acting in a very difficult scene.

JudyB---In dramas people are cruel and hurtful to others--yes that's
true, but if everything ran smooth and only good emotions were protrayed, we wouldn't have much of
a story.

JudyB---from yesterday. Your inlaw,
outlaw comment was spot on.

Also from yesterday. Yes, I was in it or on board from day one. I LOVE
this tn. I like the fact that it takes place in the country, on the rancho as opposed to the D.F.--I love the storyline, poor girl meets
rich [potentially] guy.--I like the old people, Gramps, India Maria
[folksy-colorful] Santina who I think will turn out to be a friend to Maricruz.--Good villians,--Evil
Eyes Lucia, Awfelia y EWWsebio--Long lost family [father] I like everything about this one.

Added comments---I agree that Maricruz is a little over the top at times, that's ok, no tn is perfect. Ana Brenda is a goddess and a very talented actress. Her smile is the prettiest in all of Mexico.---Octavio/Daniel Arnies, very handsome and a perfect match for Maricruz. Yes I agree that he is a little slow/dumb but all galan's are at first. Well these are my thoughts. I have very few if any complaints--sorry CathyX. I
loved Corazon Indomable from day one and I still love it today.
the gringo

Gringo- I love your enthusiasm. I love how you always root for the good girl, while Carlos is always rooting for at least one of our bad girls (or at least admiring her).

Nothing about this one has turned me off so far. I only hope they handle the Solita story with sensitivy and that Ewsebio is found out and punished.

I think we have to expect Mari to be over the top in her total lack of polish right now, otherwise there would be no way everyone wouldn't automatically know she is the same person when she later takes on her educated/city-girl persona.

And Octavio has to go from being an insensitive man-child, to being a man worthy of the new Mari (or even the old Mari).

We get to go on the journey with them both.

Oh, I also really like the upbeat opening credits song. Haven't yet looked up who sings it. I hope they don't do a switcheroo like they did with PEAM, and switch the upbeat song for a boring downer song.

I'm hoping once we move to the next stage of the story, the editing won't be so jumpy and choppy. Right now it feels like the writers and editors and just rushing through this humilation of Mari and her family stage.

ITA with Vivi. So far that's the only thing that I like. I could turn the tv on, listen to the ''Hey Hey Hey'' song and turn it off...

Margarita, the goddess of the cumbia is the one who sing.

Pablo...do you know the actual title of the song? I'd like to look for it on iTunes.

Vivi---Yes, I hope that octavio will be worthy of her. I'm sure he will but it might take a little while. In the intro, it shows what looks like a break up but even if that's true, I know that he will come around, wake up and come to his senses.

Pablo---Thanks for the music info.
I like the opening song also.
the gringo

Margarita la Diosa de la cumbia -
Déjalo ir.
And in Mexico it's still used for opening credits.
Alegria

I have looked it up on iTunes and it doesn't seem to be available. Of course, that was after episode 2 that I looked it up. Maybe it has since become available.

Well I guess having the rape happen this soon means we don't have to hold our breath anymore about it. I don't care if it is a TN staple, I'm sick to death of these rapes in every TN. If you have to have them, and I don't believe you do, then at least stop picking the most vulnerable victim in the show.

Another ep I can delete without bothering to watch (even if it does mean missing the little mono.

Nanette

These rape scenes are the only time I am grateful for Univision's sensitive censors. Also keep in mind that this is a 4pm show in Mexico (when kids are surely watching) and that it was more graphic, and it makes me ask questions about the hows and whys of the social acceptability of these rape storylines in Mexico. I am assuming there is a cultural reason for its constant reoccurrence that I just don't/can’t understand.

Thanks so much for this recap La Paloma and for last week's too.

Nanette - ITA w/you about these rape plots. I know they are not in every TN but they are in plenty.

Vivi - One of the things I hope to do for a future project, once I have a real grip on Spanish, is to have explained (as like you, I don't think I'll ever understand) the frequency of rape narratives. I know TNs have a broad audience but often times their largest audience is female and since Uni seems to take into account audiences opinion (our interesting discussions about changes in plots if people hate/like actors/actresses), it is hard to believe a female audience wants to see this.

Vivi - Your comments regarding the "over the top" Maricruz are spot-on because as Maria Alejandra she definitely looks like the same person, just well spoken and well dressed, and with several great hairdos, btw; but some of the things she says as MariAle sound more like things a college-educated cosmopolitan person would say, not a country girl who was just tutored for a few months, so you'll have to suspend your disbelief when it comes to that too. Oh, regarding the rape scene on a 4 pm novela. The interesting thing is that just 30 years ago no Mexican novela (not even a primetime one) would show the lead couples in bed, much less a rape scene. Back then as soon as a couple started kissing the cameras cut away, then when they returned to the happy couple they suggested (but didn't show any hint) that the deed was done.

Maybe is not so much about the rape, but how victims overcome it and keep going. In this case, since in the other versions that character didn't exist, maybe it was created with a purpose... sometimes TN try to be all teachy and preachy and this could be the case. Why is the Solita character also a deaf and mute? What is her role as the story advances? Will she have a meaningful plot twist?
There's something going on there...

PV: I get what you're saying; however, I'm disturbed by the violence against women in these TNs. Not that you don't see it elsewhere, but it seems to be prevalent in these shows.

I don't believe in violence, but I'd like to see a woman who's about to be raped kick the shit out of her attacker and walk away--but not before spitting in his face.

La Paloma,

Much has already been said about your difficult, but very thorough recap and the episode itself. I have to admit, I just couldn't watch once it was evident what we were going to see happen with Solita.

Personally, this is a TN plotline I would love to see parked permanently. It is used for too often. I know these TN's are remakes, but it doesn't help.

Latina, thanks for the words of encouragement to stay tuned.

Daisy

Vivi, I don't get it either, why is is so normal to get rape scenes in telenovelas? If I think too much about it my head hurts.

Great recap, La Paloma. Sorry you had to watch and report the rape. Once I saw Solita running through the woods in bare feet and Eewwsebio in shoes, it was a foregone conclusion. Thank you, Uni for editing--in this instance.

I don't like my scenario any better, but Solita was so sweet and innocent, liked Eewwie's attentions, that he could have had her without force by continuing to seduce her. The act, though, would probably have frightened her anyway and we'd still have a story of underage relations.

The rape will probably mess her up for a long time. I hope MC gets her professional help and puts her into a School for the Deaf and she learns sign language (after her transformation, of course).

The one thing I really like most about MC is that she is the first one to admit that she doesn't have the polite society manners expected of her and calls herself a bruta. She also has the warmth and friendship of Santita and La India Maria--I'm getting used to her and beginning to like her role.

For Octavio's sake, MC would like to learn manners, but the forces of evil are against her right now. He *doesn't* know how Lucia & Awfelia have been treating her and MC isn't telling, because she's not sure herself what is happening. The explanations all seem reasonable.

MC does need to remove herself from this poisoned environment to change. Going back to the shack won't be the solution, now that she knows there is another, different world out there--one that her beloved Octavio lives in.

Let's get her to her Dad before he conks out.

Latina--We really welcome your participation, truly we do, you add so much, but even telling us that it will get better in two weeks and about hair-dos, education and speech still leans towards spoiling it.

There's still plenty to discuss, and your comments reflect your passion and enthusiasm, about what has happened in the last few episodes. We love to speculate, so you can do that, just don't give us specifics.

And thank you for that information on how recently "no Mexican novela...would show the lead couples in bed, much less a rape scene. Back then as soon as a couple started kissing the cameras cut away, then when they returned to the happy couple they suggested (but didn't show any hint) that the deed was done." We had our own similar censorship battles on tv shows for years where married couples slept in twin beds and were never shown making love, or getting romantic in the bedroom. The only place we could get to see that was in the movies.

La Paloma, great recap of a truly horrid episode. I am with everybody on this one,we are all sick of these rape scenes. How does that add to the story?
Octavio,is a brat.Handsome and really sexy but a brat. How is MC going to learn any table manners, if he her husband doesn't teach her? Her comment about her fingers was funny. He should stop treating her like she is pretending to be crude. He could protect her better than he does. what is wrong with him? Miguel is so .....whipped he is brain dead.

Olive.

I think the only way the rape would have added to the story is if the consequences of it had CAUSED hysterical muteness and deafness in Solita. As it is, it's just wrong and serves no purpose.

I think most story tellers like to rely on a dramatic event or events to make an impact. Murder, rape, torture, kidnapping, stealing, cheating, bankrupting, children having their parents die, maybe even with them witnessing it.You name it. Is rape worse than murder? We don't seem to have as much trouble with murder. It's all bad, But that's what makes such riveting stories. I find rape very unsettling, but it's all unsettling, and it's used like many plot devices to create a dramatic story.

Thanks to all of you who made kind remarks about the coverage of the rape. Recapping is like life--sometimes you have unhappy events. You just cover them the best you can.

I hope Solita can get some help to recover and I hope that MariCruz keeps her bright spirit and loving heart as she moves through any changes.
