Qué Bonito Amor #25 (Mex 37-38.1) Friday 5/17/13 La Cucaracha’s Revenge or The Mexican Hat Dance Begins, Courtesy of Elvira
Labels: QBA
I wonder if the danger surrounding Ana has to do with Fernando's association with the battered woman and her goon husband. She could get caught in the cross fire.
Elvira has sunk to the depths but then with Lourdes as a mother it's understandable. So predictable that she would bring the sombrero to Amelia and insinuate that JAntos spent the night. Amelia knows better but from the looks of those previews I suspect she isn't going to speak up which will make me dislike her even more.
I love JAntos' dignity when Lourdes starts venting and name calling. He has that innate pride that his good upbringing instilled in him and it kind of brought her up short. I really wish he would just tell her to STFU and that he wouldn't touch her princessa with a barge pole. That he isn't interested in her silicon charms, never has been and never will. He really looked insulted when she offered him money. I can't help thinking how horrified she is going to be when she finds out he is filthy rich. I'd also hope that JAntos takes the opportunity to drop a dime on Coloso and really shock the red headed she devil.
Can't help wondering about Isa. Amelia has been passing her off as her own for years so I guess they didn't always live in that ratty little place or wouldn't the neighbors know she hadn't been pregnant? Also we've seen dozens of novelas where a plot point is that the child doesn't have papers and thus can't go to school, yet there seems to be no problem with Isa. Amelia and Maria could be in serious trouble if asnyone discovers Iss is not a memeber of the family.
One detail, at the end of 'El Colmo's' (the pit's) visit to the bar where the mariachi as a team stood up to him for Maria, what Coloso says is a generalizing comment that all the folks of that social status (the rich and 'not-so-famous but socially elevated) are the same way, that they all end up in extreme hunger-poverty, like Santos. I believe Santos gave him a smirk and took it lightly since without wanting to Coloso had described Santos' current state to the tee.
I was so glad Fernando was basically shouting to the moppy Santos 'snap out of it, hide your chivalry away and fight for Maria, you moron!'
ITA on your comment 'Wow! who knew??!' at the Aventurero and Lety scene...
Also Dona Lourdes and El Sonador scene... another surprise...
So some 'couples' are getting set up. Elvira's friend with the other guy with mustache (can't remember name), Aventurero and Lety, and maybe eventually Anita with Fernando...
one line they had in LHDM that Fernando did not say this time is when he mentioned to 'El Colmo' that they had referred to the bar as 'el antro', the corresponding character in LHDM also mentioned that they might refer to the bar as 'el antro' but for them it was their holy place of work 'sacrosanto lugar de trabajo' so he needed to respect their turf.
At first i have to admit I was reluctant to accept the fact that for this version they merged the 'Sigi' and 'Fernando' characters from LHDM into one for this one (with the Maestro Arturo Peniche in that role) but i am beginning to like the more mature and grounded 'Fernando' when it comes to giving advice to Santos.
It was so funny, in the LHDM original, his response to Elvira was even better worded, he literally giggled in her face when she mentioned that she only wanted to let him elbow around in 'higher social circles' (you can imagine his face)... hopefully when Elvira realizes this trick about the sombrero does not work either she will give up. but i am afraid she won't give up until at least one of her parents realizes/learns how far she has taken this attempt to get Santos to notice/relate to her.
It would have to be someone other than Santos himself to tell the true story to Concho or Lourdes, neither of them would believe Santos right now.
In the end, when they learn who he is, Santos will still have a debt of gratitude for at least Concho since Concho hired him without papers and that allowed Santos to survive. But I too am waiting to see their face when the truth comes out.
For Elvira nothing less than a month would do.
But working overseas to get drinking water to people who have not much more than a space of ground to live in would also open their eyes and be a very humbling experience.
Jardinera,
i forgot to say that my favorite line was...
He has to admit that he’s been a fool. (Viewerville seconds that—not putting his foot down with Elvira, preferably on her throat.)
my sentiments exactly..
and speaking of Amalia, why is she using a double standard?
she has Jorge Alfredo clarify a misunderstanding/lie that has agonized her for 9 years, she feels guilty about having believed stuff about her Pedro from third parties, and she seems a bit more comprehensive with Maria, at least advising her to either break clean with JA or accept him and live with him the way he 'is'... but when it comes to Jorge Alfredo, she still won't give him the benefit of the doubt, let alone vouch for him a little bit with Maria, who is also believing the worst of her beloved... (granted, Maria saw the photos and saw Elvira sitting on JA's lap but still, the least JA deserves is to be heard... and Amalia should know that and should remember her own experiences... listening to others who have interest in splitting them from their beloved ones is never a good idea...)
BTW, send Elvira to 'You're cut-off!!' and send Wendy and Bruno to Steve Wilkos so Bruno can take the lie detector test and Steve can announce the result to all her 'social circles' and then she can go running away and bang herself on the wall as much as she wants afterwards.
Elvira didn't actually tell any lies about the hat. She said Jorge Alfredo left it last night. If Elvira exagerates and amplifies the tale, implying JA spent the night with her, it will be interesting to see whether Amalia will call her on it or keep quiet thinking it would be better for Maria not to know the truth.
Decie Girl, you and Martaivett have covered every other detail and its interpretation with flair and excellence. Don't have much to add.
UA--Now that you mention it, Elvira does remind me of Merry Piece!
To cover my favorites--have to start with the first words...
...Sad Sack de Santos. Jar--you are the Queen of aliteration.
...Sue making love to his mop
...irresponsible de Oscar the Goof
...Guiliano and Bruno are enjoying a bit of unhappy hour
...Mama Lourdes there instead, looking like the Big Bad Wolf in drag
All the way to the end with:
... Cara de yeah-so-why-bring-it-to-my-house-instead-of-the-bar-you-stoooooopid-scheming-wench-de Amalia. Just at that moment who should appear but la pobre de Maria del Bar-y-Oh!
The car: $225,000? That would have to be a Ferrari, Bentley or Lamborghini, right? Which one was it that the coppers ripped out the trunk lining of anyway?
The trial: Did poor Mike even get a jury trial? It looked like the judge was distracted or bored to tears during the "cross-examination." He delivered his verdict in the same bored tone and immediately sentenced him. I think they tried to make that collection of people to the side look like a jury, but to me they looked like the prosecutor's cheering section.
The soaking: If they can't do the "fall into the water" scene right, they shouldn't do it at all. I was amazed at how quickly our teenage lovebirds dried out--just in time to buy some cotton candy. And, lucky for Paloma, Rodrigo's money was still in good condition.
Anita La Dama del Queso
I'm tired of stupid Maria and contemptible Amalia, not to mention idiot Jorge. JA has just lifted an incredible weight off Amalia's shoulders and given her back her adoring love for Pedro and look how she pays him back. Maria herself has been the victim of a deranged prank (the serenade to Olmos) where JA defended her, no questions asked at the incriminating video, and she still doesn't have the decency to hear him out nor to trust him. And dumb JA with his overblown "gentleman" syndrome is not smart enough to pull the leech off and toss her aside, making it clear to her and her parents, HE IS NOT INTERESTED once and for all.
All too stupid - I'm done.
I just saw a note in Wikipedia that she is scheduled to appear in Que Bonito Amor as Herself!!!!
Maybe that means we'll get some songs from this terrific performer.
Anita La Dama del Queso
I would be happy if Paloma and Rodrigo were limited to brief highlight reports only. ('Cuz I'm old and cranky like that.) Don't need to see the very young lovers.
Wendy swimming with the fishes? OK by me, except for having to hear endless lamentations from her mother.
So many misunderstandings amongst our characters here. Can't they all just get along, wear the pretty costumes and sing the pretty music?
La Paloma
Aston Martins can cost more than that.
Heads-up: Expect some strange editing this week (or a sports pre-emption) because Friday only had about 12 minutes of Episode 38.
I didn't notice any pre-emptions on Uni's own evening schedule for all of the coming week. But you never know....
There aren't many pre-emptions on Univision, which is great. However, these extended episodes do get a little tiring.
Thanks so much for this most excellent, snarky recap! I too liked your aside about JAntos putting his boot on Elvira's throat.
Maria and Jantos are all about the breakup to makeup that's all they do. I can't wait for the time they finally stand up and fight for what they want, without all the crap people throw at them to keep them apart. One can hope : )
That trial was such a joke. I agree that the "jury" looked like the prosecution's cheering section. Eight years though, I thought they would give him way more time than that. Now Jantos knows that Mike didn't sell him out.
Bruno and Wendy what a pair. Will Bruno really marry Wendy? How is Wendy going to fork over all that moola? Hmmmm.
I like the couple's set ups so far.
I too wish they would send Elvira far, far away. UA you are right Elvira is just like Merry Piece, lol.
I don't think there will be any pre-emptions by Uni. They now have a Sports Channel and they send a lot of the games to UniMas. I think the only way there will be pre-emptions on Uni is if there is major breaking news or some award show. They are trying to be more like the big three broadcast networks now. More shows, less interruptions. Just my opinion.
In any event the sentence was also marginally wrong. Money laundering can be a misdemeanor or felony depending on the amount involved. Because the laundering in this case was 10 Million it would be a felony . The sentence would be 16 months to 3 years with the option of a fine of at least 250,000 or double the amount laundered which would be hefty. In addition additional years can be added on because of the amount of money involved but the maximum add on would be 4 years so at worst Michael would have gotten 7 years
Just as an aside money laundering is also a federal crime and the while the fines are the same the prison term can be up to 20 years in a federal pen.
On the other hand while the set up of the courtroom was wrong, i.e. the cheering section at least QBA has gotten the medical scenes right. For once we didn't have evdryone decked out in masks and gowns which usually happens in novelas even when the condiditon doesn't warrent it.
I really can't stand that Elvira character. It's not just that she's a villianette and juvenile, she's not that good looking and her whole story line is cartoonish.
This TN would be so much better if everybody just acted their age. Maria is just as bipolar as her mom - wasn't it just 24 hours ago (in TN time) that she refused to promise and instead swore never to leave JAntos again? At least he's been steady. Of course, she's all he got going for him as the rest of his life is in the 'loo about now, but at least he isn't swinging back and forth like a bandera in the breeze over Garibaldi.
The plot is so illogical, it really isn't worth it to me to get worked up about it, but I agree with everyone's comments above. I can see the point of the anonymous poster who threw in the towel. I watch these things to learn Spanish, for entertainment, and because I like seeing the portrayal of the culture and the pictures of Mexico. I am still in mourning over the end of AB. But I am unexpectedly enjoying this one as well. It's giving me what I want from a TN and I like Maria and Santos and I want to see them happy in the end.
Thanks for another great recap, Jardinera. You had me laughing all through it!
They are showing working class living conditions much more accurately in this TN than is typical. Kudos to them for that.
I am finding the language to be pretty challenging because there is so much joking around, colloquialisms, and innuendo.
As much as I like JAntos and Maria, I am not seeing any chemistry between them. Neither has much of a sense of humor or playfulness, and JAntos is just plain glum most of the time. But beyond that, the two actors just don't have any sizzle when they are together.
I believe that Aventurero and Lety shared a taxi to go off somewhere together a few episodes ago, maybe last week? It was a random little scene, but it was probably meant to prepare us for their flirting in this episode.
I'm with you on the lack of sizzle between these two leads. But individually I really like them and I wish the cameras would linger a little longer on their faces.
JS has such a great dimply smile and an infectious laugh. Too bad they are not in evidence nearly enough. You're so right, he spends most of his time being glum.
Decie Girl, oh, I get it why he is so glum. It's very understandable, pobrecito. I'd just like to see him take a break from it every once in a while. I'm thinking back to AB, which I don't know if you watched, but the galan, Daniel, was in a very similar situation in the beginning. On the lam, innocent of course, cut off from all who knew and loved him, a stranger in a strange land. But when he fell in love with the protaganista and when they were together, he was one happy muchacho. Those two had great chemistry.
There was bit of dialog between Maria and JAntos I think after their first break up, when she says to him that he only said he loved her when he was drunk and he says well, you threw yourself into my arms. I thought he was teasing and she would laugh. But, no, she took it seriously and reacted a little bit defensively and he ended up saying that you have your version of events and I have mine, also a bit defensively. They could have delivered those same lines with smiles and made it a cute little teasing joke, but instead it was almost an argument. I wish they both would lighten up a bit. Or we'll have to send in Anita to straighten things out. :)
