Qué Bonito Amor #17 (Mex 25-26.1) Tuesday 5/7/13 Two Charros, a creep and a lady or Can't we all just get along?

Recap by Ellie--
Part I and II are up [Click on Read More].

[I was not home to watch the start of the episode and my DVR did not catch the first few minutes, so my apologies for anything that I might have missed.]

Part I

We start with our main man, Jorge Alfredo, who is looking delicious in pink carrying Amalia who is having a medical emergency down the stairs.  [I'm thinking he should have just called 911, but because no one on this show has any common sense I'm just going to move on.] While all this is going down in Mexico, in Los Angeles the Garza family is having a discussion about Jorge/Santos, Jorge's mother is again pleading with everyone in the room, telling them that she firmly believes her son is innocent. The evil orange lawyer Giuliano is there trying to muddy the waters and insists that Jorge/Santos is not to come back to LA.  Justo, who finally seems to be thinking is not in agreement.  His son should not have to live his life on the run!

Also in Los Angeles poor Mike Johnson is being pressured to "tell the truth" and turn on his friend, but Mike is a stand up guy and refuses to do this.  He stands his ground and tells his attorney that his friend is innocent.  He has never questioned his innocence, furthermore, he has already fired one lawyer who tried to get him to sell his friend out! Viewerville shouts "You go Mike Johnson, you go!" [Side note to the Garza family, give Wendy up for adoption and make Mike a member of your family, he is a real good guy!]

In Mexico, Maria is just getting home when Ruben "Moneybags" pulls up in his shinny black car, he is there to tell her that there's a date set for her job interview.  He does not get to finish his good news because just then Susanito’s mom comes out and informs Maria that her mom is in bad shape and that Jorge has taken her to the clinic! Maria and Paloma both freak out, especially when they realize that no one picked up Isa from school! Ruben offers to drive Maria to the hospital while Paloma picks up Isa.

Paloma (Renata Notni, the actress, is so pretty!) gets to the school where Isa has been lamenting that no one picked her up.  It's almost like she's not part of the family (kid, you have no idea!).  Paloma finally gets there and tries her best to keep calm as she informs Isa that they are not going straight home, today they have to go somewhere else.

While Maria and Jorge are in the hospital, El Coloso and his sidekick are up to no good! Coloso is trying to break into Jorge's room in la pension, when the landlady is distracted by someone’s offer of mole (goodness, I'd get distracted by mole too!).  El Coloso and company run up the stairs, jimmy the door and start looking through Jorge's personal property (for shame!).  By a stroke of good fortune, Fernando arrives just in time to keep Coloso and his minion from opening the envelopes that Jorge was hiding that contain the damning information about who he really is. Doña Prudencia, the pension landlady, walks in on Fernando and the two rats and correctly guesses that they have broken into Jorge's room and threatens to call the popo. Fernando ever the sweet talker, tells her there's no need for that. They had the keys to the room and were just picking up Jorge's outfit. I really wish he had allowed her to call the cops, maybe that would have taught Coloso to behave like a normal human being!

Part II
Maria, Paloma, Isa and Moneybags arrive in the hospital where they are met by the doctor who has nothing but bad news for them. Amelia has over extended herself, she was supposed to have complete rest but it is clear that she has continued to work, this has made her medical condition flare up and she is having a severe attack.

Maria is horrified, she tells the doctor that this is not possible, her mom has been following doctors orders and has not been working, that’s when precious Paloma speaks up and tells the truth, she and Amalia have been making and selling candy (my sister shouted out during this, ‘darn that candy!’), they did it because they wanted to help Maria pay rent (tears) and they feel like they were a burden on her, Maria tells the crying Paloma that this is crazy talk, everything she does for them is because she loves them!

Doctor Badnews then informs Maria that the treatment her mother needs is not cheap, in fact it will cost 60,000 pesos [when did you become the billing department Doctor?!], and they need payment up front because the clinic does not stock the medications.  They need to be ordered and unless they get payment, they won’t be able to do anything for poor Amalia. Moneybags Ruben then offers to pay for the treatment. Maria objects, but he insists on “helping” her.  He is going to pay for the treatment with his credit card. [Let’s hope that he gets frequent flyer points on the card and buys himself a ticket off of planet earth!]

Back at the pension, Susanito, whose feet must be tired from running around telling everyone that Amalia is ill breaks the news to Fernando, Coloso and the minion.  The four rush out to be with Maria in her time of need. [Let me just say that the guys in the band should just get a Twitter account so that when something bad happens someone can just send a tweet out and then everyone will know what’s up, thereby saving Susanito’s feet from all the running he is having to do!] The only bright side of his tour of bad news is that he got to see his potential future love! [I can’t wait to see how that story line plays out!]

In the clinic Maria finally gets to see her mom, who upon waking up realizes that she has lost her eyesight and starts to have respiratory problems. [I apologize for my lack of details here but I could not watch the whole scene, since losing my mother to cancer I can’t watch shows where a parent dies, or is in medical distress.]

Coloso and the gang arrive at the clinic where of course he and Jorge get into it, again. I wish Maria had just kicked them out.  That was neither the time nor the place for them to be acting like children and Maria should not have to worry about these two infantiles while her mom is so ill!

One of the best confrontations is when Jorge goes head-to-head and toe-to-toe with Moneybags Ruben.  Jorge tells him that the debt for Amalia's treatment is his and not Maria’s. Ruben, classy guy that he is not, says that he is not even going to ask how Jorge plans on paying back the money, and Jorge replies that he is not going to ask how Ruben is planning on having Maria pay him back. This statement does not sit well with Ruben who promises to make our hero pay for talking to him that way.

As Jorge is leaving the clinic to walk Isa home, he buys her ice cream and then tells her to make a wish on a star.  She wishes for her mom to get better because she does not want her to die like her daddy.  Later that night he also tucks her into bed, awww.

Meanwhile, back at the bar, the other guys in the band apparently can’t put on a good show without Coloso, Fernando and Jorge. Mirna and Don Concho plot ways to get the Coloso and Jorge rivalry to continue. [Man this is going to be worse than Kobe vs. Shaq!]  And somewhere in the city, Elvira and her mom discuss the fact that Jorge is broke and can’t afford to give Elvira the good life she deserves. Ummm, someone should tell harpy number 1 and little harpy number 2 that Jorge has got better taste than that (let alone more money than daddy)! Ummmm maybe not tell.

One bit of good news is that the treatment Amalia received seems to be working and if all goes well she can go home the next day.  My sister was not happy with this and shouted “she was dying a second ago and you are sending her home tomorrow? What kind of doctor are you?!”**

Join us tomorrow when Moneybag gets his revenge on poor Jorge!

{**Anita here: Ellie, honey, welcome your sister to the world of modern health care!!! BTW, I think it was determined that Amalia is suffering from Neuromyelitis Optica, this according to the doctor in a flashback a couple of weeks ago.}

Recap is coming. Our Ellie is on the West Coast and has been doing the recaps live and in person at JNTR. Anyone east of her must practice a little patience.

What we learned last night:

Maria learned Amalia can't see.

Coloso & JAntos learned Ruben is trying to keep Maria for himself.

Ruben learned both Coloso & JAntos are willing to fight for Maria.

Ruben learned JAntos does not act like a poor man, he acts as though he's a millionaire.

Michael Johnson learned if he doesn't turn on Santos, he will stay in jail. (Why is Michael Johnson speaking Spanish to his lawyer in an American jail? LOL)

Susanito learned Irasema lives at the pension.

JAntos learned Isa doesn't want Amalia to go away like Pedro did (dead?)

We learned Isa feels as though she's really not a part of the family (which we already learned she's probably not)

Lourdes learned Mirna & Concho have a thing going on.

I haven't seen that many telenovelas but is it a cliche that there be at least one scene in a hospital with the patient hooked up to a very loud beeping heart monitor?

I've seen it now in Amor Bravia and Amores Verdaderos, and now here in this TN.

GoBlueFan- Any and all hospital scenes are par for the course with tns, not even worthy of being called cliché. The beeping machines just set the mood. But what IS cliché are scenes when said loud heart monitor alerts that the patient has flat-lined, and NO ONE on the hospital staff rushes in at all/for many minutes to give medical aid, while the patient’s life slips away. I shake my head in disbelief and horror every time.

O.M.Geee. What did I miss last night? Someone is in the hospital all tubed up? How did that happen?

Anita,

Amalia was rubbing her wrists. Santos went to the Mendoza house to talk to Maria. Amalia answered the door (Maria was chaperoning Paloma on her study date with Rodrigo). Amalia hissed at Santos to go away and leave Maria alone forever. Then Amalia fell out. Santos scooped her up, told Amancia to advise Maria what happened and he and Susanito took Amalia to the hospital.

Maria & Paloma walk home. Ruben is there waiting for Maria. Amancia runs out & tells Maria that Jorge Alfredo took Amalia to the hospital. Paloma goes to get Isa from school. Maria rides with Ruben to the hospital.

I forgot how Fernando & Coloso found out about Amalia being in the hospital but they were there too.

Maria went to visit Amalia in the hospital bed (with JAntos by her side) and when Amalia came to, I don't know if she flipped out upon seeing JAntos or what but now Amalia can't see.

The doctor told Maria the treatment would cost 60 million pesos and then Ruben stepped in to be the big man and told the hospital to bill him for the treatment (to indebt Maria).

JAntos & Coloso did not like this. JAntos told Ruben that HE would be in charge of Maria's debt and Ruben scoffed at him, a poor mariachi being able to afford that kind of treatment. But later thought Jorge Alfredo does not act like a poor man but rather, acts like HE's a millionaire and wants to know what's up with that.

Loved the camaraderie scenes with Mil and JAntos. Those do seem credible. I have to double the size of my beanie battery for anything more. Like I thought, it looks more like mid-life crises than muchachos y muchachas suffering from first love or, rather, true love calling and being summarily kicked over to voice-mail.

Oscaar and one of the other guys went into Jorge Alfredo's apartment (guy didn't lock the door, as usual) and almost found the letter he had left for Maria when Fernando got there. That's how they found out.

Santos did lock the apartment; the mariachi with the mustache picked the lock.

I thought the look that passed between JAntos and Oscar when they saw Maria with slime ball Reuben was hilarious. Up to that point they had been glaring and sniping at each other then bonded to get rid of threat number 3.

Reuben is an ass but just from JAntos attitude he picked up a vibe he didn't like. He however thinks that JA is acting over his class and he is going to take him down a peg. Too bad he doesn't know that JAntos could probably buy and sell him. It did concern me when I though he said something about going to LA and checking him out but I might have misheard.

Reuben and his pal were also plotting to make a scene at the bar and get JAntos busted. All these close calls with the law are getting more and more dangerous.

Had to lave at Ms Concho telling her daughter she had to get a rich man, no low class mariachi for her. Wouldn't she be surprised if she knew what we do and that look on her face when she walked in on Concho was priceless? Guess she won't be running off to warn JA off her Elvira.

What the heck is wrong with Amelia? I can't make a diagnosis based on what we've seen. One thing for sure it isn't that trusty all cliche leukemia. Maybe diabetes?

How many ways can you spell OBLIGATION? I really pitied María last night when she herself was unable to pay for her mother's treatment. It is a good plot line just sad.

Ellie's Part II is up, folks.

Decie Girl--Amalia is suffering from Neuromyelitis Optica. The doctor in the flashback a couple of weeks ago mentioned the diagnosis. I had to look it up in Wikipedia and based on her symptons, the writers got it right.

Anita, La Dama del Queso

Anita

Checked it out and for once it does look like they got it right but there will probably be a miracle cure. Don't know how I missed it the first time around - probably thought it wouldn't matter.

Ellie- Brilliantly funny recap! You managed to somehow make some very grim events (that brought sad memories for you) amusing.

They are really upping the pressure on poor Maria, aren't they? This girl is due for something good to happen soon, and not just JAntos being her novio for more than 2 episodes.

There will be a day when Ruben and Concho realize that JA can buy and sell both of them several times over. When that happens Elvira will try even harder, but I think Ruben will be long out of the picture.

Thank you for waiting on the recap, and Anita for posting it for me :) I need to find a way to watch ahead of time so I can do my recap on the weekend, that way our east coast friends can get the recap on time!

The cost for Amalia's treatment was 60,000 pesos. Hmmmmm ... wasn't that the same amount Coloso paid for her once before? The amount that caused him to assume that Maria belongs to him? I wonder when (if) it'll hit him that he's acting like a younger version of creepy Ruben!

Ruben said he had a business trip to L.A. in a week (or for a week) and when he came back he would "take care" of Vargas. Yikes! With news reports and live streaming of the trial, he might come back with a whole arsenal to use against Jorge Alfredo!

Soyyo

Ellie--You've captured the mood, for sure. I don't think I even missed not seeing the episode (except for JAntos in pink--that I have *got* to see).

...and all of your asides just added to the fun and understanding--especially putting Wendy up for adoption!

So Lourdes learned Mirna & Concho have a thing going on, Anon207. How big a thing? Hell hath no fury as a woman two-timed by a toro de lidia no-good husband who has been keeping her and Little Harpy Numero 2 in pearls and bedroom slippers.

Thank you Anita! I really dislike Wendy and hope to see Justo an Altagracia dump her on an unsafe corner of North Hollywood, they live so close that it could so totally happen, I don't even think she's bright enough to find her way home again.

Ellie, the recap was worth witing for!

Excellent work, Ellie. I agree with you about Wendy.

I think it's time I took all the numbered cliches I identified and actually do the list. One definitely on that is that it's the hard-working child that always gets betrayed by the lazy and selfish one.

I think it's time we started a drinking game, any time Milamores says the word "justicia" or the phrase "que bonito amor" is said, or anytime Jorges mother cries while saying he is innocent, wait, never mind, this is the perfect way to get into AA,lol.

I meant to make a comment about Monday's episode. What bad form of Jorge Alfredo to wear that borrowed charro suit, a family heirloom at that, while fixing a car, and then later to sleep in. But as some of you have pointed out, he is acting like a person who doesn't have to worry about the costs of things.

The current drinking cues are:

-- Oscar using the word "ponchito" or other verbal insult aimed at Jorge Alfredo
-- Characters speaking Spanish who should be speaking English
-- Any mistakes in perception of the US justice system

Additional possibilities:

-- Fernando and the word "justicia"
-- The phrase "que bonito amor" said by anyone

urban if we did this would any of us be sober by the end of the episode?

Eli: Terrific recap! Here are some things I enjoyed and got a few chuckles and guffaws out of,

"[Side note to the Garza family, give Wendy up for adoption and make Mike a member of your family, he is a real good guy!]" ITSA!!

"It's almost like she's not part of the family (kid, you have no idea!)." Priceless aside!

Susanito's love interest is close to Mama Mancia's age and that in itself is something I wonder the writers meant to have happen, or if Karla Alvarez's hooker character is another one totally miscast by a 45-50 something actress.

I do like the idea of saludos whenever Altagracia defends Santos also. I don't always remember, tho! Hic!

If this blog had existed during the original broadcast of Abrazame Muy Fuerte we would all have been wasted if the only triggers were the title being said in the dialogue. I'm sure that was something the sketch comedy shows had fun with then.

I remember watching that when I was a kid, who was the main actor in that? And how old is Karla Martinez? I'm gonna go Google!

Jardinera, thank you for your kind words!

not that it matters, but i think the younger of the two mariachis with moustaches is Natalio. actor: mariano palacios. not sure if he has a fancy mariachi name. or is it one? like newborn?

sorry if i missed it in other discussions, but what does susanito mean? i could imagine if the others were teasing him like calling him suzy or nellie, but his mom calls him that too?

mai tai

Eli, the galan was Fernando Colunga. Pablo Montero was his younger half-brother and Cesar Evora was the male villain. The latter two won acting awards that year.

Gracias, Ellie. I'm finally getting caught up. The bad behavior in the hospital was on my nerves too. Your asides were far more entertaining than anything the numbskulls on screen were doing!
