Qué Bonito Amor #33 (Mex 49-50.1) Wednesday 5/29/13 The Near-Seduction of Maria
Labels: QBA
I find it ironic that Jantos so seriously told Maria that he only wanted a pure woman and then made the attempt to change her into an impure one.
Thank you so much for this fab recap.
La Paloma:
I laughed at your comment and I agree.
I am really more interested now in Irasema and Susanito to see if she will finally quit the life and find something else to do now. She really is a hooker with a heart of gold. I love what she did to Elvira, it's about time someone did.
I was wondering what Dr. Mike was up to too! And he still fixed the guy's tooth, who knew?
I think Isa is just bored going home now and since she isn't able to do much, she is whining. I bet she'll get into more mischief once she is better.
So Rodrigo does have some musical talent. His drumming wasn't bad.
I hope Gloria continues with her treatments. She needs to stay healthy for Rodrigo.
JAntos was funny as the clown, he is also a fixer, always trying to help other people.
“The clown (and I mean it in every sense) comes to visit w/Isabel …” Eeew. That was painful to watch. Ay, Jorge, how could you?
ITA that Isa is getting tiresome. I thought JAntos and Maria were making good progress with the horizontal activities, but I love how Irasema gave Evilra (you see what I did there?) the business. I only wish she’d left her out on the street without clothes a bit longer; both Evilra and the love birds needed a bit more time.
Madeleine, you might call JA and Maria fixers, but I’d call them people with boundary issues. At least they have that in common.
I agree, Carolina, on the clown thing. When Pablo did this in FELS I was cringing then, too. This must be a Mejia obsession of some kind. Here's hoping that this is also a one-time thing.
Both Maria and Santos' boundary issues come from still living with their parents. Maria lives at too-close quarters with her mother and sisters to have developed any appropriate boundaries with them.
I think Santos was too quick to forgive his brat sister. Again, if that baby is born I hope she doesn't get to raise it. When the hell is someone going to tell him about Bruno's confession?
We had the cliche near-miss on an encounter between Oscar, Gloria, and Rodrigo. How many more of these are going to happen before Oscar has to know? I hope not many.
Gloria is being foolish delaying her treatment through all this. This situation seems to scream for a sudden shock.
Standing ovation for Irasema for sticking up for Maria. However, I don't think this is going to be enough to stop Elvira.
Paloma, impurity is of the heart, not the body. Irasema is a pure-hearted woman no matter what she's done with her body. Maria -- when she finally makes love with Santos -- will be experiencing what sex really should be. I mean that in every sense of the word. It will be nothing short of sublime.
I'm finding Irasema and Susanito's story one of my favorites right now. I so wish for a happy ending (and I assume we'll get one). Of course it's totally corny, but I don't care.
Bummer that there were no songs in this episode. I really enjoy that too.
I didn't cringe too much at the clown scene (not knowing the history of this producer) but found it a bit unexpected. But Jorge Salinas put his heart into that performance, bless him. What a trooper!
I don't know if Jantos (love that name for him!) would have followed through with the Maria seduction attempt. I think he was seeing if he could push it a little. It was a bit ironic when he was just talking about Maria's purity and then he tries to remove just a teensy bit of it! LOL.
I did think Santos smiling/leering at the clown was creepy.
Irasema should've left Evilra nekkid on the street a little bit longer. Or just thrown her purse at her minus the clothes. Let her explain to Lourdes & Concho why she's walking home in just a towel.
Also, had she done that think of the story Elvira would concoct out of it. You know from past evidence that Lourdes won't let anyone tell her the truth. Frankly, I expected better of her.
But Concho doesn't believe JA has a thing for Elvira.....he knows JA is totally into Maria to the point of singing out their relationship on the stage. I think he even told Lourdes that JA was totally in love with Maria.
Now, lets see what revenge Elvira has cooked up for Maria.
JA and Maria on the bed was soooo uncomfortable. I couldn't help thinking "Please, people, not on the clown suit with the bear watching!"
I'm glad Irasema hauled Elvira out on her skanky ass. I don't see what she was so freaked out by, either. That towel covers a lot more than some of her usual outfits.
Elvira thinks sex is fun & games, a diversion, a weapon, a manipulation, a way to alleviate boredom. She doesn't know Santos and doesn't want to know him (except in the Biblical way). She thinks he's a poor piece of crap who should be thanking her that she would even look his way.
If Santos & Maria have sex, it's because they love each other and want to share themselves with one another.
If Santos & Elvira had sex, it'd be because she wanted to piss off Daddy, get revenge on Maria, alleviate boredom, prove something to herself, have fun.....sex with Santos wouldn't be about Santos & Elvira, it would just be about Elvira.
I think that's what Santos means about Maria being pure and Elvira not being pure.
UA, in Mexican families, adult children normally live at home with their parents until they get married.
There are some exceptions, of course, but generally that is what they do, and it's just a different culture. I don't think it leads to boundary issues or Mexico would be full of such cases, and it's not. I think Maria's got a nice, close relationship with her family. Maria and Santos have boundary issues because the writers wanted to create a very sappy story with what they want us to see as heroes with huge hearts. I'm not buying it. Helping everybody who comes along is a nice impulse, but not sensible.
Mexicans generally seem to think we're the weirdos for not wanting to live with our families. It's inconceivable to them. :) BTW, lots of other cultures do this, too. And in Japan, Maria's family would be living in half that space.
I too am a fan of the Sue/Ira story line. I wonder if Mancia would still think her a nice girl if she knew what she did for a living. In any event she has a good heart, which we know from when she did the little favor for JAntos. I noticed that when Maria went to talk to her she had a dress with her. I'm hoping Ira will accept it and go to the club so all the guys can see that Sue has a real girl.
Frankly I'm getting sick of the entire whiny Mendoza clan. Amelia and her waffling about JAntos, Paloma moping although I will give her points for passing on the big fiesta because she knows about the money issues, Isa gets a small pass for being bratty in the hospital because she is probably bored with having to rest and she is young enough to want all the "stuff" her family can't buy her but she needs to lay off the nobody loves me line. And Maria what else can be said about her. She swears she loves JAntos but yet again when set up by SlutE she blames him and lashes out. I'm sorry but her immaturity is getting to me and I'm not sure she knows what real love is. She's all wrapped up in the idea of principe azul and the not the reality. I'm afraid if she and JAntos do the deed she'll spend the rest of the novela moping about and praying for forgiveness that is if she doesn't have one of those first time pregnancies TNs love so much.
JAntos is a fixer. He sees that all these people need help, he doesn't have access to his bank account so he tries to keep everybody happy any way he can. He is also going to have to learn that these people have pride and dignity and wouldn't accept charity from him if he could give it. He means well and at least he doesn't have ulterior motives like Reuben.
So we get a near miss of Gloria/Rod/Oscar. Typical but Oscar did again have an interaction with Rod which should make things easier when the truth comes out.
I did. That is the first interesting thing that this character has done.
I thought it was odd that Prudencia was immediately going to throw Irasema out on the street for causing a scene when only yesterday she told her they were all like family. She wasn't even going to wait to hear what happened. Now I really do want to see if SlutE tries to get back into the building to cause more trouble for Maria and JAntos. Love to see her go up against Prudencia.
I was just entertained at the close conjunction of Jantos loving Maria's "purity," then putting the moves on her.
He probably did mean her purity of heart. It's also good when all our parts, heart, body, spirit are in harmony.
Alegria
JAntos really is a nice guy, and I think the whole experience of seeing how hard life is for regular people has been eye opening for him. I think he wants to rush in and fix things (like a lot of men do), and the fact that he is enormously wealthy IRL and yet he can't help his new friends would be very frustrating for him. As for me, I really have to stop myself from psycho analyzing these characters and just batten down the beanie.
So why can't JAntos tell Maria that his sister is preggers? It's not like that is going to incriminate her or lead the FBI to him.
Alegria
Analyze away we often do it, should have seen us on Refugio. We should all have hung out a shingle.
I agree that JAntos is a good man at heart and the experience is an eye opener for him. He is also a very successful businessman which means he is driven to get things done. In a way this is really good for him, he's leaning lots of life lessons along the way. I'm wondering if in the end he will set up shop in Mexico and find a way to help all of his new friends with or without them knowing it, I can't see any of them being happy with him throwing his money at them. And won't Lourdes have fit to think she let all that money slip away (not that she would ever have had it for her little slutty princessa).
Carolina, I completely agree; he was not talking to Curtis. I am going to take a wild guess that Derecho is gay. That would allow for a freak-out scene with Curtis that would be another comic relief effort.
I don't like clowns at all, but was admiring Jorge Salinas for busting his butt in that scene, to do the "best" clown he could think of. I hope we don't have a recurring clown theme, I prefer Jorge Salinas without white makeup covering his puppydog eyes! LOL
Great stuff Paquita. You always deliver a corker.
I *will* stop and read the comments.
DCG, I would love to let loose with the analyzing, really I would, but I really need to protect my own sanity. QBA is all about senses and emotions, and it isn’t going to hold up to much intellectual scrutiny – make that ANY intellectual scrutiny - and I think I had better do my best to enjoy the surrealism and the music and laugh at it and leave it at that. You are so right that JAntos still will have to learn that people don’t always want to be helped or feel comfortable receiving charity. I do think he will end up in Mexico. I can’t see Maria leaving her family, for one thing. And we wouldn’t be watching him fall in love with Mexico just to have him leave it in the end, would we? It doesn’t seem like he’ll have much to go back to in LA, apart from his family anyhow.
I’m neutral on clowns; loved them as a kid but think they’re stoopid now. My problem was that I thought it was undignified and unnecessary for JAntos to literally make a fool of himself for Isa’s sake. I think hiring the clown on the street to come to the hospital would have been more than sufficient. I do agree that Jorge Salinas gave that clown scene his all, to his credit.
Where is it that Gloria is getting money to live on and buy drum sets (they can be pretty expensive)? Her apartment is a lot nicer, in a nicer building and has nice tchotchkes around.
JAntos as clown. Cringe factor, good one, UA, I was looking for that word. Sorry, it did nothing to make me feel better about this tn. You're right Elvira, kudos to JS for giving it a go. Even Maria had a roll-your-eyes look there for a minute. At least Isa got a kick out of it.
Shower scene--I don't remember Jorge Alfredo taking a big-big oversized towel you would take to the beach into the shower with him that Evilra used (good one La Paloma). I guess my beanie got wet in the shower with him.
I agree with Decie--he was talking to a "real" love. If it is a girlfriend (or boyfriend--just read your comment UA! Thinking alike?), I wonder why he hasn't just told Curtis to back off, he's taken. Are we going to get a back story? Or is this a near-adult daughter (just read your comment after typing this, Elvira) he's talking to (again, interesting discussion on when one uses amor or querer over on CI).
Ok. I'm all done now.
Anita La Dama del Queso
Love Irasema. Sometimes we see her without all that garish makeup and she actually looks younger and prettier. The first time I saw her I thought, "Oh, oh" - I had (very mistakenly) pegged her for the type of character that is actually being portrayed by Elvira. Glad to see I was so wrong.
