Qué Bonito Amor #38 (Mex 56.2-57) Wednesday 6/5/13 Jailhouse Mariachi Rock

Colosso and Jorge continue jabbing at each other in the dressing room as they get ready for tonight’s performance.  Colosso laments things aren't the same without his “chiquita”.

Meanwhile Maria and the Merry Wenches serenade a double-decker tourist bus with “Cielito Lindo”.  Who knew the Merry Wenches were so talented?  A guitar, a trumpet, a tambourine, and an accordion – and yet it sounds like a full mariachi ensemble.  Wow, such talent is wasted at JNTR!

At JNTR Elvira and Lourdes wait on tables as Colosso and Jalisco sing the JNTR theme song – “Jalisco”  Que lindo es Jalisco, palabra de honor.

Later at depa Mendoza, Paloma asks mamita for permission to work at Doña Magnolia's fonda.  She feels guilty that Maria is carrying the load for all of them.  The extra money would help to pay for Amalia's meds.

Maria and the Merry Wenches get paid, along with a hefty tip.   The wenches are try to convince Maria to try lining up some serenatas.  The doorman at a bar named Sal Si Puedes asks if they want to make some extra money.  The girls look at him suspiciously. We later see why as Maria sings Cielito Lindo to a seedy looking bunch of drunks.  Ay, ay, ay.......  One of them approaches the girls when they're done with their songs, leering and getting a bit too vulgar.  One of the Wenches slaps him, hard.  “Oh, so you like to hit, do you?  I'll show you how to hit!”  ruh-roh, this is getting ugly really fast.  He comes nearer and now it's Maria's turn.  She smashes a bottle over his head and he keels over.  She and the Merry Wenches hightail it outta there but not before one of them delivers another bottle to his Neanderthal skull - <CRASH>  Bedlam ensues as soon as they're out.  Out on the street, the girls congratulate themselves on their narrow escape but wonder if maybe Maria should re-think her decision and maybe go back to the bar “No, if there's one thing a poor person has, it's their dignity and it must be defended tooth and nail.”

At JNTR, Elvira and Lourdes aren't cutting it as barmaids and orders are starting to get mixed up.  Elvira dumps a tray full of drinks on Fabian.  He starts screaming at her and then blames Ruben for bringing him here.  Lourdes comes to her rescue.   Concho begins to make his excuses and Ruben realizes Maria no longer works there.  Ruben announces he has no reason to be here.  He starts to leave but sees Lorena standing at the top of the stairs.  “QTH are you doing here?”  She figures he's picked up such lovely manners from the gentuza he's been hanging out with.  They begin arguing.  He denies he's Maria's lover but admits he's very much in love with her.  Lorena doesn't hold back and hauls off and hits him, hard.  She's held back by Fabian while Ruben tells her to leave.  She warns him he'll get tired of his new toy but by then it may be too late. Fabian criticizes Ruben for allowing himself to be subjected to such scandal over a mujerzuela like Maria.  Ruben doesn't like this and manhandles Fabian, warning him not to talk that way about Maria!!

Later at the bar, Fabian starts picking on the bartenders.  Mil Amores steps in and tells Fabian that is no way to treat people.  Fabian throws the empty shotglass at the bartender.  Mil Amores starts to go after him but the bartender holds him back and they offer him a glass of the good stuff.

Lorena drives up to where Maria and the Merry Wenches are walking.  “Well, well, looky here.  If it isn't la robamaridos (husband stealer) and her compinches (accomplices).”  She wonders if they're out celebrating the fall of yet another husband.  Maria reminds her again she has nothing to do with her husband.  Lorena tells her that Ruben just announced to the whole bar that he's in love with Maria!  She warns her that she's gonna make it her mission to ruin Maria's and Ruben's lives.  Maria reminds her, again, that there is nothing between her and Ruben.  Her love is Jorge, and no one else.  The other girls step in and put Lorena back in her car and tell her to get going.

Holy Sombrero, Batman!
Jantos and MilAmores are off on their own, or so they think.  The MariachiMobile is close behind.  MilAmores asks if Jantos is sure he wants to get back in.  Jantos is sure, it's the only way he'll know what Bruno knows.  The MariachiMobile continues to follow unnoticed, because it's so stealthy.

Hotel Opera   Bruno the Bronzed sits in his room when MilAmores comes knocking.  With the help  of Don Rigo he conks Bruno over the head, dumps him in a waste barrel and takes off.  Bruno's “guard” suddenly wakes up and realizes what's going on.  He give chase, but Jantos, cleverly disguised as a maintenance worker, trips him with a well placed mop – but not before the guard gets off a shot heard round the hotel.  In the lobby, Colosso and the guys see Fernando being chased by D.F. version of Keystone Cops.  The mariachi rush off to get their weapons, er, instruments.

Jantos comes face to face with The Bronzed One.  Bruno apologizes for everything Jantos has gone through.  He confesses that he, Arnold, and OJ have used Jantos' business for several years to run their money laundering scheme.  He approaches Jantos, who doesn't want him anywhere near him.  “You've ruined my life and also Michael's, and my family's”  He can no longer withhold his pent up  rage and starts beating on Bruno.  Bruno continues to apologize as Jantos pummels him. Bruno mentions Wendy and this infuriates Jantos even more.  “Don't even mention her name!  You're nothing but a damn executioner (verdugo).  I can't kill you because my sister is expecting your child!”  This, apparently, is news to the Bronzed One.  “Que? Que?”  He had no idea.  He hadn't the nerve to face Wendy until he cleared things up with Jantos.  “You don't deserve Wendy's love,” says Jantos, “the three of us were like brothers and sister.  Why, Bruno, why?”  Bruno admits it was only for money.  Jantos tells him he got him into this and now wants to know how he's going to get him out of it.  Bruno says confessing his transgression to Jantos was only the first step.  Jantos jumps in and offers that the next step will be for Bruno to tell Justo everything.  Once he speaks to Justo, Jantos will turn himself in because his father is the only one he can trust to give him legal counsel.

Downstairs, the Mariachis take up a rousing rendition of  “La Negra”.  MilAmores does a quick presto chango behind the reception desk, with the help of a cute young clerk and joins the troupe as they finish the song.  When they're done, an young man eagerly asks if they're available for hire.  They haggle over price.  The young man admits he denied his love in public.  He wants to serenade his love to beg for forgiveness.  Colosso agrees to the lower price and limits the number of songs......blah, blah, blah.

Depa Mendoza
Maria returns to a very nervous Amalia.  She's very worried over all the money they owe.

El MariachiMobile rides again....
And this time Jantos joins them.

Casa Reyes
Rodrigo watches over Gloria.  He won't leave her side.  He loves his mother very much.  She asks his forgiveness for being afraid to tell him the truth about his father.  Rodrigo says he has nothing to forgive, she's been more than a mother to him.  She hugs him and tells him she loves him with all her being.  He's been the light that has illuminated her life and during her most trying times.  She thanks him and tells him again how much she loves him.  Rodrigo weeps.  He begs her not to leave him.

Mariachi
They arrive at the offended lover’s apartment.  They break into “La Negra” (not my idea of a serenata) Someone finally appears at the window.  They wonder why he denied his love.  Then they sing “Tu y Las Nubes” but still no response.  Finally someone opens the door and a young man appears.  Everyone looks at him.  He approaches our would be Romeo and they embrace.  Our Macho Mariachis are taken aback.  Colosso wants to know why they weren't told the serenata was for a man.  The Romeo didn't know he was supposed to tell them.  Colosso wants to know what happen.  “Romeo” explains again that he denied their love.  Colosso thinks he doesn't deserve his love if he doesn't have the pantalones to say who he loves.  Love has no gender or race.  Love is like what he feels for his “chiquita” except that El Pocho keeps filling her head with nonsense (babosadas). Jantos wonders if a man who calls himself “El Colosso” may be compensating for something.  “Maybe he thinks that by giving himself such a big name, he can win over my “bonita” It isn't a name that one needs, it's a big heart. But El Colosso, well God gave him a small heart.”  jajajajaja.  Jantos turns to laugh with the guys and Colosso starts the nightly Mariachi Melee. Silliness ensues and the cops finally break it up.  Thank goodness.

Irasema's Apt
Irasema gets out her stash of money and heads out to the streets.  One of the “girls” tells her it's gonna be bad for her if she doesn't meet her quota.  Irasema shoves the wad of cash into the girl's hands and tells her to give that to their pimp – it should be enough and tell him never to look for her again.  The other girl doesn't think that will ever happen.

Casa Mendoza
Maria continues to play Mama to Amalia.  Amalia worries about money and Maria knows she'll come by that money somehow, even if she has to borrow it.

The Bronzed One calls Wendy who's been frantically looking for him.  Bruno tells her he knows about Bebe Bruno.   He tells her he's made a big mistake and he had to come fix it.  He'll be back soon.  He loves her and she's the main reason he wanted to make things right.  She should never forget how much he loves her.

Mariachi Jail
The bickering continues with the men taking sides: Team Colosso and Team Jantos.  Each takes their own side of the cell.

Casa Mendoza
Maria prepares bolillos w/frijoles and queso, yum..... She looks at her textbook, “Derechos Mercantil” (commercial law/commercial rights???) looks at her photo with the mariachi and smiles.

Mariachi Jail
MilAmores scolds Jantos for screwing things up yet again.  Why did he have to go tweaking Colosso's nose again, just when everything was getting better.  Jantos doesn't think it's getting better.  They're out to kill him.  For some reason, Fernando thinks the mariachi outfit is a good disguise.  Jantos can only think that Fernando had a point.  He never should have started up with Maria again, only to hurt her yet again.

Casa Mendoza
Maria tucks everyone into bed.  She settles into her own bed and looks at a picture of her and Jantos in happier times.

Mariachi Jail
The Mariachi's are hustled out of their cell by their jailers.  There's a party going on in the front office.  Team Colosso takes center stage.  Jantos takes exception to this but Fernando holds him back, warning him not to rile things up again.

Tu y Las Nubes
~Jose Alfredo Jimenez

Ando volando bajo
mi amor esta por lo suelos
y tú tan alto, tan alto
mirando mis desconsuelos
sabiendo que soy un hombre
que está muy lejos del cielo

Ando volando bajo
nomás porque no me quieres
y estoy clavado contigo
teniendo tantos placeres
me gusta sentir tus pasos
habiendo tantas mujeres

Tú y las nubes me traen muy loco
tú y las nubes me van a matar
yo pa´ arriba volteo muy poco
tu pa´abajo no sabes mirar

Yo no nací pa´pobre

tu pa´abajo no sabes mirar.

Finally! I get a song on my night!

I was thinking the same thing as it aired!

If the Saucy Wenches want to continue as Maria's back-up band they need the appropriate uniforms. Alas, that's not likely to protect them from drunks like the ones in that dive.

Or Lorena, whose wrath should be directed at her husband. However, I know from observing a friend that many married women go into deep denial over who is responsible in these situations. While we haven't heard the backstory of their marriage or their problems, I am guessing that she has been mentally ill for some time. One can't fault Ruben for not wanting to deal with that anymore, but he is equally mental for his obsession with Maria.

I know it's par for the course, but I'm sick of hearing her called all sorts of vile names implying she is less than moral when she is probably still a virgin (That irritates me, too, but that's another story).

The last thing Maria needs now is to lose Jorge Alfredo from her life, but Ruben looks like he is hell-bent on it in the avances. Amalia will believe every word he tells her because she wants to. She seems willfully blind to Ruben's true motives and that is the greatest danger to Maria now.

thanks, Paquita!! i will read this when i get back from an errand, but had to mention the ending last night...
i was LOL when Fernando just yanked Jorgito back and said 'Tu Chitón!!' then when Jorge just put a clueless face and asked what?? he said 'Shut up you [moron!]'... that made my night... it is interesting that Coloso's reaction to the gay 'serenade' in the original was completely 180 degrees from this time... Coloso was completely offended by the situation, but surely they found a way for Coloso to provoke Jorge into a fistfight this time as well.

meant to say the OTHER Coloso was offended by the situation.

That fight was totally stupid and risky, since they did end up getting put in the drunk tank afterward.

So it looks like Susanito will end up having to defend Irasema from a pimp down the road... and I'm betting that the pimp can be traced up to Ruben.

Maria and the Merry Wenches certainly do have a whole heap of talent, especially considering they didn’t even practice or warm up!

I guess Maria’s anti-violence stance only applies to JAntos. Not only has she slapped a few people a few times and fought like an alley cat against the bad guy Lorena hired, she can wield a bottle in a barroom with the best of them. Nevertheless, JAntos is going to have some ‘splaining and perhaps some tapdancing and a whole bunch of te amo-ing to do after getting in ANOTHER scrape THE SAME DAY that she threatened to dump him if he does it again. Ay, chihuahua.

My, but that Fabian was extra charming tonight. Previously, I kinda liked him because he consistently gave Ruben good advice, not that it did any good. And I did enjoy his dressing down of Elvirus. But after throwing the glass at the bartender and his nasty names for Maria, let’s just say it’s all making sense that he is Ruben’s best bud.

“The MariachiMobile continues to follow unnoticed, because it's so stealthy.” Ohmygosh, how ridiculous was that? My dear husband, who does not watch TNs, absolutely loves the Mariachimobile. I have to say, it’s one of my favorite parts of this show, too.

Bronze Bruno needs to find some hobbies. Boinking Wendy and moping around hotel rooms is no way to live your life.

Gloria and Rod also need some hobbies. Weeping and wailing is also no way to live your lives, plus it’s really starting to annoy me.

Irasema, honey, I thought you were smarter than to hand over your life savings to someone to give to someone else. That whole situation is not going to go well, obvio.

I was glad to see the Mexican cops kicking back after hours. PAAAARTAY!!! It’s good do know that it’s not just the American cops who are a bunch of clowns.

Thank you, Paquita! I’m glad that you got a whole bunch of songs tonight and I loved your recap.

Too much slapstick fighting, but otherwise, I enjoyed the show. Thank you Paquita for doing it justice.

I wondered too, Martaivett, whether the encuentro with the gay couple had been updated for the new p.c. After all of Coloso's posturing and macho swagger, I would have expected him to be a little more pithed off and not started a PSA on changing social attitudes. Don't get me wrong, it was a good scene with good wisdom--just not out of Coloso's mouth.

The boys just can't seem to quit fighting. It's a good thing the popo's needed a little night music.

Ay Maria, as I watched her minister to mama and the girls, I was thinking the exact same thing you did (it *was* kind of in our faces, really), that there had been a bit of parental role-switching. I amgetting tired of hearing her moan about their debts and household finances--WE KNOW.

Carolina--We didn't know Ira had a pimp until the last few minutes of the show--too bad we couldn't have seen him hassling her earlier on, the scene would have been much better. I thought the same thing--Ira didn't get a receipt for her bundle of cash--and it *was* all she had. We know Susie doesn't have any. He had to break his piggie bank to buy her flowers.

A little Ocean's 3 there with the coordinated kidnapping of Bruno. Somehow, and we need UA's input, the scene was so chopped up, I wonder if there was anything left out. Tuesday night they are up on the hotel mezzanine scoping out Bruno and we see Jorge Alfredo coming down the stairs and then, whoops and he's gone. Where? I'm guessing Mil A and Riggo pulled him out of harm's way, but weren't they in harm's way, too?

Maria and the Saucy Wenches should have been singing a song a little more risque than Cielito Lindo to the bar flies. That's a sweet song you sing at birthday parties, not to guys who want to drown their sorrows and trade slutty insults.

UA, I'm having to agree with you that the Ruben-Lorena marriage has been dysfunctional since early days. Interesting we haven't seen her with her children--that would give us a little added backstory. We don't even know how old they are.

...and, you are certainly as fixated on Ruben as having his hand in the dirty dealings of prostitution and slaver as he is on Maria. I'm beginning to read that into all his outbursts and grimaces--he knows how to make threats, let's see if he is going to follow through.

Someone, please tell me who plays Fabian. I have seen him before and it's really bothering me to bits.

Anita

Fabian is played by Pietro Vannucci. He's Peruvian and has been in a lot of novelas, Fuego, Sortilego, MdF, the remake of CS to name a few. I've come to hate him almost as much as Ruben. Full of themselves and looking down on poor people.

I'm sick of the endless juvenile name calling and fights. These guys are supposed to be in their 30's and its all Animal House antics all the time. Enough all ready.

Urban you are so right Amelia will believe Ruben because she wants to. You mentioned her behavior to Maria as infantilizing and you are so right. The other day we had one of the more horrifying instances when Maria came home from the rescue Rod evening wearing JAntos shirt. Mama Dearest asks her if she slept with JAntos. I cannot think of a more inappropriate thing to ask your grown 20 something daughter. Had it been the 15 year old Paloma it would have been appropriate but to Maria, never. I've add Amelia along with Mancia to my list of the worlds worst smothers.

It was a surprise to discover that Irasema had a pimp. When she told Sue she didn't know if she could get out I wondered but know we know for sure. I'm in agreement that all dirty roads in the DF will lead back to Ruben or heaven help us the Godfather.

Lorena is pathetic. It is obvious that she had the money when the Weasel married her and she's been living in a dream world. I feel sorry for those kids of theirs. I do like how the Mariachi Girls put her down and sent her on her way. She is not used to be talked to like that by people she considers her inferiors.

JAntos has backed himself into a corner, albeit partly unknowingly by not telling Maria the truth. He has no way of knowing that Rueben has found a crook with his assumed name. If Maria or MD ask him if he is wanted by the police and he tells them no, he will be faced with the JA file whose crimes are far worse than the money laundering he is accused of. I'm thinking our boy is going to spend some time in the carcel. Actually he may be better off in a Mexican prison while OJ and & Co search the DF for him. He also has the trump card of calling Justo who has the influence to get him out of prison.

We don't know how many children Ruben and Lorena have or how old they are. It's never been mentioned and I don't recall seeing any photos either in their home or his office. When Isabel was playing with the scooter I wondered whether the other little girl was Ruben's daughter, but we would have been told that by now.

I question whether Lorena is a fit mother based on her current behavior.

The avance in which Santos was whisked offscreen is probably about tonight's episode. I don't think anything was missing from yesterday's.

If Santos phones home how much does anyone want to bet me he will get Whiny on the phone who will not tell Justo or Altagracia that he called?

Urban

In the scooter scene i doubt the other girl would have been Ruben's daughter. He is such snob as is lorena that no child of theirs would be playing with much less know a barrio child. The other little girl also knew where Isa lived and Amelia's name.

Lorena probably leaves her children to be raised by nanny's and only trots them out on special ocassions to be seen and admired.

UA--That's interesting about my missing Jorge coming down the stairs and getting whisked out of the scene because I thought it was shown as an avance on Monday night and I was looking for it during Tuesday's show. Maybe it was in those few minutes before 10 that I didn't see.

Maybe we didn't see the pimp ahead of time because we would have recognized him?

I don't think we even saw the del Olmo kids at Ruben's party--even though it was a little late in the evening. Maybe Mejia ran out of annoying kids to audition.

Actually, I think Decie Girl is right; I somehow didn't think of it because this series has broken stereotype due to lack of the usually visible servant characters who are sometimes smarter than the people who sign their paychecks.

Maria was fighting for her safety and honor against those drunks, so I'm sure she draws a line between violence with that motive and violence that is merely inspired by immature insults.

Yay! Paquita! Finally you get some tunes :D For about a second, I thought Fabian and Elvira's eyes would meet and the two of them could ride off into the sunset together and spend the rest of their lives too busy boinking each other to cause trouble for anyone else, but alas, Fabian couldn't see past the waitress uniform to the clearly expensive boob and dye job. Oh, well.
