An Ill Omen Brings Nobody Good

LA TEMPESTAD # 14

“Nothing happened today. It was pretty uninteresting to me.”

An Ill Omen

Marina leaves the church after her conversation with Damian. The wind blows her hair onto her lipgloss and she looks very upset. Yep, she is in a storm of emotions when she looks over at Damian. Damian has a rare clumsy moment and the brand new engagement ring in the black velvet box falls out of his pocket onto the ground. The good Priest, Fulgencio, Delfina and Estercita are standing a little lower on the church steps and see the ring fall. Oh, my, dear friends, this is a most inauspicious omen for los novios, Damian and Estercita.

Now, just where is Madrina Eusebia when Damian needs her? If she were on the scene instead of just hanging out in her cosy beach palapa she could tell the whole lot of them that this omen—the fallen engagement ring ON THE CHURCH STEPS—betides such ill chance that it would be better if Damian and Estercita never met! Marina and Damian could run into one another’s arms, cut to their boda, and the whole romance part could be wrapped up right here. Alas, Eusebia is not there and the moment with the possibility for a quick resolution to our story passes.

With a quick cut and no segue was now find ourselves viewing…

Dirty Deeds in Hernan’s Oceanfront Casa

Fulgencio and Hernan meet. Hernan is wearing the narrow cropped ivory colored denims with a fabulous black vneck sweater. Not that I am into how Hernan dresses or anything,. Informed minds want to know.

Anyway, imagine the house with a beautiful view of the Gulf of Mexico as a kind of gilded cage. In it we see two predators, say tigers—one well-fed and wise, one sleek, hungry and ambitious—circle each other. Hernan comes out with cash in hand and gives it to Fulgencio. He is paying Fulgencio for the merchandise that escaped. (The slave women.) Hernan asks Fulgencio if they are square? Fulgencio shows his canines is a semi-smile but Fulgencio has questions for Hernan. He doesn’t understand what is going on with Hernan and Marina. Why is Hernan SO obsessed with the lovely Marina? Grr…Now we see a lightning–fast swipe from Hernan as he replies that his private life is only of concern to himself. What he and Fulgencio share is a hatred of Captain Damian. Hernan goes on the attack. Why does Fulgencio so hate Damian? Fulgencio backs down a bit and says that El Capitan has caused him many problems, but Hernan tells Fulgencio not to try to fool him. The young tiger is on the attack! But Fulgencio, says “You are right.” He backs down and agrees that their business arrangement does not give either of them the right to interfere in one another’s private lives. See you later, Fulgencio says as he leaves the room. Let’s call this cat fight a draw, but I would never turn my back on either of these tigers.

On The Good Ship La Tempestad

The fisherpersons tell Damian of a problem. Fisherman big pecs/short cut offs (I do not know his name) takes the lead in the conversation. Damian tries to dismiss their concerns but they tell him, no, they have a problem on the boat.  Damian’s shy protégé, Lazaro, grabbed first mate Lolo by the neck! “What happened?”, Damian mumbles. “We were joking with this chick at the bar, annoying her… well, it seems the boy is in love with her…” They figure out that the chica was Jasmin. Damian rolls his eyes, says he cannot have that kind of behavior on his boat and says he will deal with it.

Product Placement Alert – Fulgencio’s Black Truck

Fulgencio has another meltdown and abuses his poor Chevy. Pounding on the driver’s-side door and yelling, he abuses the Fabre’s, father and son. Senior Fabre made him give up everything he ever wanted…Mercedes! The only woman he ever loved. But he is going to get even. Uh, I know it has been asked before but how DO you get even with a dead guy?

Neptune Fish Company

Night passes and morning brings the smell fresh fish. Marina is in her office looking miserable but quite fetching in yet another French fisherman striped t-shirt a la Normandie.  Olinto brings her fresh flowers. She is not interested in the flowers and he puts them in a convenient dry vase she has lying around. She asks how this morning’s production is going. He tries to cheer her up by telling her well they are doing business wise, the folks like her, etc. She thinks it is just because of the business improvements she has made but Olinto tells her it is more than that. She faced down the pirates and saved the life of Capitan Fabre! No one will ever forget that! Marina looks sad as she remembers the KISS and says that there are things that one cannot forget.

Hernan and His Violin at the Water Feature (again)

Cue violins and stormy sky and we segue to another nighttime scene of Hernan sitting on his water feature and remembering Marina. I know he has a thing for his violin but he carries a bit like a plucked chicken. Now he starts screaming at the sky (again) that he has done all that he has done for Marina! When he couldn’t defend himself she did. He is in her debt! He will trimph! She is HIS. He won’t permit anyone to separate them. Blah, blah, blah, Hernan. Rolling thunder starts in the background. They sure have a lot of storms here in Veracruz!

At Boring Bea’s House

Marina comes in and she can’t believe it. Her Auntie Rebeca is there waiting for her. They have SO much to talk about.

The Bar La Guacamaya

Dam comes in and catches Candy at the bar.(  I don’t know guys but Candy looks like a tranny to me.) She gives him a beer on the house. Damian gets right down to business . He is looking for a girl called Jazmin. Yep she works there. She is very new to the work and it seems that her only client is Lazaro.  Damian asks Candy a favor. Could Candy give her some other kind of work, waiting tables, etc? Candy says that she knows Lazaro, Damian’s protégé is in love with Jasmin, but it is not up to her. She has to call Nareo to get permission and she doesn’t think he is going to like the idea.

Mercedes Reminisces at her Nightclub in D.F.

In her glamorous dressing room Mercedes  and Liliana continue their earlier conversation about how much Mercedes’ life has changed since they first met all those years ago. It looks like Mercedes’ friend was in charge of the acts backstage at a variety club and she give Mercedes her big break as the singer of the night. Thanks to that first contract from Liliana’s boss, her life changed and Ariel came into her life.. Sigh.

La Casa de Bea-silent (We wish)

Auntie and Marina toast to life work, each other. They offer each other fulsome compliments. But Marina cannot fool her Aunt. Marina what is wrong? Is it Beatriz’s health? She did not know anything about it until she ran into Dr. Gonzalez. Huh? (No HIPA in Mexico, I guess.) Beatriz has a tumor in her lung she is not treating. All Marina can do is make sure that Beatriz takes her medications.  Tia Rebeca understands. Although she is obviously a kinda scary dame, she seems genuinely fond of Marina. They toast to triumph!

Next Tia Rebeca moves in for the Inquisition. Who are Marina’s suitors? What about handsome Hernan? (It is clear that Beatriz has already primed this pump.) Marina explains patiently that Hernan is a friend, she has known him since high school…and whatever.

Estercita Attacks Her Wedding Dress

Back at Fulgencio’s, Estercita tussles with a very aggressive wedding dress. She threatens it with scissors, and yells and screams that she does not need it for her wedding because another woman is in love with Damian. Her Mother joins the fray, wrestling and yelling at her stupid daughter, “Do you know how many women were in love with Fulgencio when I married him?” Estercita should fight to get her man Damian to the alter!

On the Street

Dam runs into Lazaro. He talked to Candy about Jasmin, but she cannot change her “work” easily. Nareo is the boss and Lazaro is not optimistic!! Damian offers to go have a talk with Nareo, but Lazaro is worried. Nareo is armed and dangerous. Damian still thinks he can help. Lazaro thanks him for his help, now and before. Damian sighs and thinks, “We must all suffer for love.” Ahhhhh.

La Serenata

Hernan has arranged a serenade as a special surprise for Marina. Aunt Rebeca and Beatriz are the first to hear the searanade.  Turns out Tia Rebeca and Bea are much more excited about this than Marina is. How romantic! It’s been a long time since Tia has heard a serenade and her lovers cannot serenade her now because they do not know where she is. Laughter. Marina says she does not like this kind of thing. She thinks it’s silly and she does not want to give Hernan false hopes, BUT she goes out and meets Hernan anyway. The musicians, having done a yeoman-like job, are dismissed dismissively by Hernan. At this moment, Hernan takes advantage of a slightly discombobulated Marina and moves in for a mercy-kiss. But they are not alone. Just coming around the corner toward Bea’s house is Damian. Hernan kisses Marina and Damian stays just long enough to create an excellent lovers misunderstanding. As he turns and leaves, he misses Marina’s slap of Hernan’s handsome face.

Delfina and Fulgencio discuss the big boda.  Fulgencia throws a fit and says he is not going to the wedding. He is not paying for the wedding. He is not going to the church and will not participate. Delfina tries the really weak argument that Damian could become a ‘son’ to Fulgencio. Fulgencio is so shocked at this piece of nonsense that his mouth gapes open like a hungry guppy. When he regains his voice he shouts that he would rather be the father of a DEMON than Damian!

Damian Pouts to Eusebia

Damian rather rudely bursts in on Eusebia. He thinks Eusebia doesn’t know what she is talking about regarding Mar-Mar-Marina. He saw her with another man. Madrina says that Marina is not in love with the other man. Now she asks Damian a question, “Are you afraid?”

Damian snorts out a disgusted “Please!”. Eusebia nows launches into one of her reveries and reminds Damian not to be afraid. Things may seem impossible …but there are miracles.

Tia Tiberon

Tia y Bea give Marina the third degree when she comes back inside from the serenade. She must tell them every detail! I think your Tia is a tiberon, Marina. She scares me.  Marina excuses herself to go to bed. When she leaves the room, Bea whines, “See. I told you. She never tells me anything.” Tia wonders if Marina is hot for someone other than Hernan. Yes, she wonders. In bed , Marina dreams of El Capitan.

The Perils of Jasmin
Back at the hovel, Nareo hears something outside and threatens Jasmin with a hideous looking knife. Sure enough, Commandante Unibrow knocks on the door and Jasmin answers, while Nareo stands behind the door knife at the ready. In a close-up we see that the good Commandante has had a brow wax since we last saw him and now has a space of a good ½ inch between his brows. It’s an improvement, that’s all I’m gonna say. He asks a terrified looking Jasmin who lives there?—Her brother, she says. She cannot invite the Federales into the house because her brother is very strict and does not allow strange men in the house. The Commandante nows asks her about her work and she says she works in the pueblo. He tells Jasmin that he is conducting an investigation and wonders if she has seen anything strange near her home. Anything suspicious? A shaking Jasmin says no, the area is very quiet. The Commandante suspicious are raised though, and he asks if her brother is at home. Just then his guys come back and tell him they are ready to go. The Commandante hands her his card and tells if she needs anything not to hesitate to call. Jasmin says, “Yes, of course, Good Night”, and closes the door of the hovel.

Thinking of You

The singer at the nightclub, who has a very nice voice, by the bye, finishes his serenade to Mercedes, with the phrase, “Thinking of You”. Mercedes’ friend says that her eyes are lit up and it is a fine time to think of Ariel Reverte. Mercedes continues her reminiscing. Ariel was married to someone else, he was not hers. Her friend interjects, Doña Beatriz, his wife, always wanted children. Mercedes remembers that it was her bad luck to have an impossible relationship. By then she was pregnant. She had her twins, and it was the happiest day of her life. “And we know what happened next”, the friend says to Mercedes. They toast silently and drink while looking very sad.

More Nefarious Actions

Nareo visits Hernan with urgent news. Hernan tells him he should be talking to Fulgencio about details of the operation, not him. and tells him the Feds were there last night. The next thing we know, Nareo and Hernan are tailing the Commandante. Hernan asks Nareo if he is absolutely sure about what he has to do. They discuss what to do. Nareo thinks that the commandant should suffer a tragic accident. I think Nareo is Swine Flu.

On the Boat

Damian is moping. He tells Bagre that he feels terrible. He is mooning over la señorita Marina. He doesn’t know how, but he is in love with her. (C’mon Damian, I know how. She is one of the most beautiful women on the planet and she even seems nice. What’s not to love, you big dolt?) They agree that Marina  is a very special woman.

Desayuno in the House of Bea- Quiet

Bea and La Tia Tiberon demand from Marina the details of last night and the serenade. Marina looses her cool and says she doesn’t want to discuss it! Tia Tiberon sighs and says that she thinks Hernan has it all. It’s as though Marina has won the lottery. Methinks Tia takes too keen an interest in the love lives of others.

Bea looks like death warmed over at breakfast. It may be that black is not her color but I suspect that the decreasing use of blush and lipstick on the actress should tell us that she is a goner. Just a thought…Does she have to exit for Mercedes to enter the scene???

A few loose plot points:

- The Father and Lazaro’s Mom talk about Jaz/Lu. The Father thinks that Laz is a grown man and it is normal for him to have feelings for a girl. Mom thinks things with “Lucia” are a LITTLE strange. Good intuition Mami.

-Lazaro apologizes to Llolo for how he treated him . Lolo is very understanding and the two kiss and make up. Not literally, of course, but they are friends again.

Auntie Goes In Hot Pursuit.

Tia y Bea are shopping while Bea tells Tia that Marina that Damian Fabre has made quite an impression on Marina. But a simple fisherman?  Of course not! Bea says he is very good looking, has a great personality but… Auntie is having none of it…that is until El Capitan himself crosses the street in front of the nosy broads and in a moment, Tia’s dorsal fin is out of the water. She is hot for the beautiful Damian. Stand in line, Sister. There are some folks here on this blog who have been fans for years. Besides that, he only has eyes for Miss World, 2010.

At the church, Fulgencio, Estercita and Delfina are apparently stood up by Damian. Fulgencio is furious and announces that the engagement is ooooooooofffffff.

Meanwhile, Damian comes into Marina’s office to tender his resignation.

What an anemic, pathetic excuse for a serenade! And what a blech of a kiss afterward!

EJ, what a supreme joy to have you back in the recapping cat's seat. (to continue with that perfect kitty motif.) I loved your comparing Hernan and Fulgencio to two savage tigers. They sure are!

I love your title and your opening quote. They are both utterly perfect.

Your wisecracks are always such fun, but I think "La Casa de Bea-silent (We wish)" just might have gotten the biggest snort out of me tonight, err this morning.

Amiga you were up late but I thank you from the bottom of my heart because with the curse of insomnia came the complete joy of enjoying the first part of your recap. Gracias!! OK I think I will go "off watch" now and try to get some sleep.

Anon, I so totally agree with you. After all that hoo-haw of auditioning the perfect band we could barely hear them (not their fault) and Hernan's kiss...urp.

I forgot to say I adored that singer in Mercedes' club tonight. Is he the same guy who does the ending theme with Daniela Romo? His voice sounded very similar. I half hoped she would jump in there and join him.

Wow. EJ - so great to have a recap from you again!!!

EJ, there was so much to love about this but "Tia’s dorsal fin is out of the water. She is hot for the beautiful Damian. Stand in line, Sister. There are some folks here on this blog who have been fans for years".. had me laughing out loud.

This was savory, sassy and downright sensational. Enjoyed every word. "I know he has a thing for his violin but he carries a bit like a plucked chicken" and "gilded cage" were a few more of my favs.

Cringed at Delfina's "Do you know how many women were in love with Fulgencio when I married him?” Yes, and look where it's gotten you. Married to someone who loathes you, condescends to and abuses you. She should be counseling little E to marry for love - on both sides.

There have been so many notable vilains in TNs, but I have to say Nareo frightens me. Perhaps it's his weapons of choice (bow/arrow and a particularly large, sharp and menacing knife) that make me shudder. He is chilling - leaving no doubt he would easily maim and kill Jaz and/or anyone else that gets in his way with great ease..and satisfaction.

Tia is certainly a confident, secure woman. Not the norm for this storyline certainly! I like her and appreciated her running to get a closer look once she saw Dam. Can you blame her?? :)

Anon, you are right in that Hernan's kiss left much to be desired. As does he...

Diana

I'll be back later but I thought everyone would appreciate this article about TV recappers.

We're not mentioned; not sure how I feel about that.

Thanks for the breakfast recap, EJ! So enjoyed reading it early and starting my day with laughs. Loved the tia tiburon lines.

I didn't know Ximena held such a prestigious title. Should've known - she's as pretty as William is. I hope tia tiburon doesn't try to barge in. As you said, she needs to get in line!

EJ- Great to have you back in the saddle...er, at the helm!

So did anyone else catch that Ariel in flashbacks is played by Arturo Peniche? I'm sure we will be seeing more flashbacks with him.

I find it interesting that Mejia always has his actors play themselves in flashbacks from decades before. I remember in TdA, someone mentioned that he believes that each actor carries their own essence that no one else can capture. I get that in theory, but I remember how ridiculous Victoria Ruffo looked playing a teen in pigtails in TdA. And although she does look fabulous, seeing Daniela Romo playing her 20-something self in those flashbacks is working my beanie overtime.

I like how Carlos Moreno (CME, Amor Bravio) finds younger actors who are really great matches to the older actors to play the flashback roles. Look at this awesome choice for young Gonzalo (Rene C.) in CME: http://cuandomeenamoroo.blogspot.com/2011/03/gonzalo-monterrubio.html

Tia Tiburona seems to be hot for all attractive males, so I don't yet think she'll go after Damian. But I can see her enjoying Marina dangling to attractive men who are after her-- that seems Tia's style, as she did mention her lovers (plural).

One thing of note to mention-- after apologizing for threatening him with the broken broom handle, Laz asked Lolo to teach him how to shoot a gun. It's supposedly so that he can also participate in the shootouts with the pirates, but I sense a showdown eventually between young Laz and Jazmin's pimp.

That's two attractive men.

Vivi, thank you! I meant to mention the appearance of the handsome Arturo Peniche...A most welcome sight.

And yes, excellent point about actors portraying themselves in flashbacks from too long ago to be credible. VR's pigtailed portrayal was really over the top.

I don't think Tia ia a maneater. She is a manenjoyer. She just appreciates the male form and doesn't necessarily want everyone for herself.

EJ:

Wonderful, marvelous recap! I enjoyed every word.

I had to laugh when Ester was trying to cut up her wedding dress, having her hizzy fit and her Mama wrestling that dress from her and her Mama telling her that a whole lot of women wanted to marry Fully back in the day, and Ester saying ewwww, lol. Too funny.

Herny presumes a lot. I too wish DamFab had stayed around long enough to see Marina smack the crap out of Herny, that kiss was way lame.

I think Tia Rebe will be fun. She brought a breath of fresh air to Bea and once Tia knows what is going on with Marina, I think Bea will have to be silent, lol.

Diana:

I agree with everything you said about Tia and Nero. You are so on the money.

Urban:

Thanks for the link. I will check it out later.

Vivi:

You are so right about Meija. All during CS 2009 the actors, including Enrique Rocha, played their younger selves with bad wigs, lol. I wish they had used younger actors that had more of a resemblance.

I worry for Lazaro. The poor guy wants to rescue Jazmin from Nero, but I'm afraid that Lazaro will be the one that needs the rescuing.

Thanks again, EJ for this most marvelous recap and welcome back!

Madelaine: "The poor guy wants to rescue Jazmin from Nero, but I'm afraid that Lazaro will be the one that needs the rescuing".

You read my mind amiga.

Diana

Thanks, EJ. I missed last night's episode. Yesterday was our anniversary, and I wish I could say that I missed the show because Hub and I were out dining and dancing at some romantic spot, but instead he spent the day helping our daughter who just moved and I had meetings for the new semester.

Anyhoo, I am anxious to see the new character Rebecca.

I am sort of glad that I missed the kiss. evidently, He's kisses are NOT on Marina's list as the best things in life. que lastima for you, He.

I hope that I will be able to watch tonight.

Happy Anniversary Susanlynn!!!

Having a problem with Hernan's wardrobe. On the one hand, it's good to be shown something different, and somebody mentioned that this style is hot in Europe. On the other hand, I hate it! :) The skinny pants, esp. bright colored, and then last night's take in the tweed jacket with elbow patches, hmm, interesting.

Elna June's back! What fun and what a fine funny recap. I thought that donG (El Tal) has a softer sweeter look... he's had his eyebrows waxed! Thanks for clearing that up for me.

I didn't particularly like that singer (maybe it was the song) nor did I care for the serenade (bongos in a Mexican trio?).

So far, I'm really liking Aunt Becky.

I'm really looking forward to Damían's little chat with Nereo... that should be fun.

Happy Anniversary Susanlynn!

Carlos

Thanks, Vivi and Carlos. AFter yesterday's disappointing turn of events, I appreciate the wishes. Today is better. We started the day with Hub making us a nice breakfast. Now, he is on the computer trying to score Hall and Oates concert tickets. Scoring concert tickets seems to be his new raison d'être . He has already gotten tickets for The Beach Boys , Frankie Valli, and Mannheim Steamroller for our fall date nights.

Regarding He's look,,,,,,,I am getting a Mick Jagger vibe.

I very much enjoyed the Recap Part Dos, especially the bit about Tia's shark fin. How very true. I'm still not sure what to make of her, but Marina seemed truly pleased and delighted to see her.

I hope we get to see more of Ariel/Arturo. He's one of my favorite actors and his talent is quite up to par with Daniela Romo's. I look forward to more scenes of them together even though they will likely be fuzzy flashbacks.

Happy Anniversary Susanlynn!

Buenos Dias:

Thanks for all your wonderful comments. The quote at the top of the recap is from Mr. Elna June when I asked him to tell him what happened in last night's epi. He hasn't a word of Spanish and I just thought his comment was hilarious.

My dear Capitan Sylvia,I am so glad to have been able to give you a mid-night snort and a chuckle. It is just wonderful to be recapping with you again.

Hi,Audrey! Thanks for the warm welcome. I am so glad to see my old Caray pals again.

Diana! How great to "see" you. Thanks so much for the kind words. Hee hee hee. When I saw Tia Tiberon I could just hear the "Jaws" music in the background. I loved her line that her lover's cannot serenade her now because they don't know where she is!

Vivi: So nice to see you, too. Yep I saw Arturo/Ariel and had a giggle on the Shakespeare riff. Remember in 'The Tempest' that Prospero is the only one who can see Ariel and Mercedes seems to be the only one who can see Ariel. We got some good info on THAT front last night. I know YOU wouldn't have missed it, Vivi, with your eagle eye and razor sharp memory, but I did not know that Beatriz was Ariel's wife.

Mads: Thanks so much for all your help in getting this blog posted correctly. Yikes!I so agree with you and Vivi on the money saving Mejia device of using old actors to play their younger selves. They is no amount of soft focus available to make wonderful 50 something Daniela Romo look like her 25 year old self. Hate it.

Hi, Susanlynn:
Happy Anniversary!Great comment about Hernan's kisses. Hee hee hee. Is that Hall and Oates or do I have the song attribution wrong?

Thanks, Carlos, for your kind words. I am very happy to see you and many of our pals from earlier times on Caray. I just KNEW you would love aunt Becky. she is just your kind of spicy, spunky woman. So glad I could give you the important beauty tip if you need it. Only your esthetician will know for sure...

Susanlynn: Happy anniversary. Sending hugs, Diana

EJ - for a nothing/uninteresting episode (I concur), you sure managed to make it a ton of fun! Thank you!!

I think I'm gonna love Tia Becky; beautiful and vivacious. I was lol when her pants errr jaw dropped at the sight of el Capitan.

one minor detail - XN was Miss Universe 2010

Susanlynn:

Very Happy Anniversary and Hall and Oates Tickets????? I am sooo jealous, lol. I love them ; )

EJ, I had to laugh at your comment about DonG Monoceja getting a brow wax. I thought he looked a little more human in this one, but I assumed it was because he's not all beetle-browed and yelling "Es MIO!" all the time.

Gracias Elna June

Why isn't Fulgencio losing weight, this is at least the 3rd time he has stormed away from the dinner table?

Yes, Nereo is really scary, as the actor was in Alborada. Has he ever played a good guy? The bow & knife don't make noise.

Instead of tigres, I prefer hyenas for Hernán & Fulgencia, they pick the bones of their victims.

Variopinta:

OMG you made me laugh re: The Fulgencio Diet. I am going to a garage sale and buy a supply of cheap dining room chairs that I can punish before I finish my meals. That should get rid of that peasky 20 pounds I am trying to lose.

You should write a book...'The New Fulgencio Diet', How to lose weight and behave badly at the same time". Of course, as you say, we have no proof YET that it works but I'll let you know how it goes. Hee hee hee.

Urban Anthropologist:

Thanks for the article. I'll read it when I get a moment.

Elna June

Cap'n:

Alas El Tal will haunt us fovea! I was laughing too when Commandante Robles doesn't say ES MIO, but Ester has taken up the mantle with Damian Fabre ES MIO, SOLAMENTE MIO! At least we don't have EL CHEQUE ES MIO, well not yet anyways ; )

As I noted during her run in AB, the actor who plays Beatriz reminds me of Charo, Nora Salinas reminds me of Celine Dion.

Variopinta: my avatar is Athena with her companion animal. A woman at my meditation group said they she saw Athena as one of my guides protecting me.

Carlos: I don’t always understand your preferences, but I reserve your right to have them—odd as they may be ;)

UA, that was a very interesting article. I had no idea that other people were recapping TV shows. I actually think we have bit more validity in that we are actually translating from one language into another. Which begs the question, when all TVs have English CCs will we become obsolete?

To clarify, when all TV closed captions translate from Spanish to English...

I don't think we will be redundant, what if someone misses a capitulo or wants another person's take on a capitulo? I think we will always be around. Jus' sayin' ;) English CC'S are very prevalent and still people come and comment here on Caray Caray, or maybe they don't use the captions for some reason, like learning Spanish ; ) and want to find out if what they thought they heard they did. I know, I know I am such a cheerleader ; )

I neither use nor need the captions, in either Spanish or English. I come here for the great writing, comments, commenters, and discussions (that aren't always about the tn). :-)

Cap'n...Our recappers are very special people. Their wit and wisdom will keep them from becoming obsolete. The warmth of our caraycaray home will continue to draw us together. Even if the tns eventually have English captions, we will still want to gather and giggle over the wonderful madness of telenovelaville no ??? P.s. My Ipad is insisting on changing telenovelaville to telenovela vile . HAHAHA

Elna Jane----Yes, those were Hall and Oates lyrics.

Cheerleader Madelaine...,We have been to two Hall and Oates concerts . ...One in Hershey, Pa. and the other at The Borgata Hotel in Atlantic City. This will be our third. They are Pa boys. ..Levittown, I think. We are big fans.

Well good, that's what I more or less thought about becoming obsolete. We are a great community here and that just doesn't go away. Also, most of my friends don't "get" why I enjoy these crazy shows so much, so it's nice to hang out with like-minded folks.

Susanlynn, telenovela vile, bwahaha!!

I wouldn't use the subtitles if I had them unless it was a series like La Reina del Sur with accents and vernacular I'm not familiar with. However, it would be helpful for those occasions where the music or exterior noise interferes with understanding. That doesn't happen as often as it used to, gracias a dios.

Ah, impermanence.

I agree with Vivi, Syl, Mads and Susanlynn that while we may soon be rendered technically obsolete, tech cannot replace the wit and fellowship of shared experience we have on Caray. Folks put a lot of themselves into their recaps and because of that and the shared sense of wonder and enjoyment we get out of watching TNs 'together', I do not see this blog/community becoming obsolete.

Melinama created a fine platform here for us, a place of great civility, charm and humor. I am a cheerleader for Caray, Caray, too, Mads. Even when circumstances cause me to take a break from this community I always come back.

Let us raise a glass to our BlogMom and the Caray, Caray community!

Elna June

I'll drink to that! The patio is serving half-off Dark and Stormies today, in honor of National Rum Day and La Tempestad!

Well, I for one am grateful for the CCs and I'm not ashamed to use them both for the Spanish programming and for English programming (especially for shows on PBS that originate in the UK). Before discovering the CCs and during the era of often useless CCs I would waste a lot of time rewinding and straining to pick up what some of these actors are saying. If only more of the actors would enunciate their words as clearly as César Évora and Eric del Castillo.

Carlos

Carlos: I'm finding that I have to use the cc's on a lot of shows. Actors do not enunciate anymore. I guess it's to make it seem more realistic? I used to do the rewinding, watch again thing all the time too until I had a "duh" moment and realized I could use the cc's. However, it is a pain because, at least on my TV/DVR, I have to cycle through five cc options to get to "off".

Ahh,,Dark and Stormies. I think that I was first introduced to them while we were in pirate ( or for Cap'n ...PIRATE...) mode during our voyage during Pasion. I have never had one in real life, but I recall throwing back quite a few virtual brews with me mates here on the S.S. Caraycaray. YO-ho-ho.

I just so happen to be sitting here having a glass of Pinot gregio, cheers, salud, here here!

I'll drink to that!

Caray recappers becoming obsolete?? Perish the thought!!!

EJ--wow!! What a spectacular return to recapping! So clever (tigers squaring off), hilarious (Bea-quiet, we wish!) and observant (unibrow waxing and Beas fading health).

What an all star cast of recappers for this novela. Every day it's a treat to read.

Thanks again, EJ! So happy you're back!

Susanlynn, so I guess it your anniversary was a capri night with no prepsitions involved?

Cyn...Actually....I was wearing a maxi dress....in the kitchen...in the yard...on the sofa....in the car......in the pool......under the table.....

Funny!

I feel guilty that i read the cc's, but the fact that they are there doesn't stop me from coming here!

I love it when a writer can analyze a scene, be cynical about it, and put it in an organized context. it's stuff like "you should fight for your man like i did" that makes you want to talk back to the TV and say "a fat lot of good that did you, lady." when you have witty recappers such as yourself, you have a way to say it back and hear your inner thoughts validated.

you wonder if anyone else notices how absurd daniela roma is as a 25 year old. the music is so serious, you want reassurance that your fellow watchers were giggling too!

and then its to talk to other peeps who take their TV seriously (although we know its ridiculous - a guilty pleasure), but to share with them the witty little things we noticed or other ways of seeing things that make it so satisfying to see recaps. i love escaping with other people. so cheers, caray, caray!

by the way, ximena's eyebrows drive me crazy. they are too close together! it's funny that you point out that she was miss universe and therefore must be a total bombshell. but i cant help thinking every time i see captain fabre's passion for marina, that he can't be so shallow if he's going for someone who looks like her. its proof that he doesn't need someone as gorgeous as himself to be happy in life. its funny, cause even with the anemic-colored hair, william levy still looks like adonis - its the plush lips!!!

Great recap, EJ! Sorry the comment is late, just catching up on my TN watching and recap reading!

The Patio crew has already cleared away the empty bottles of rum and tequila and Thursday's brow shavings are long gone but I couldn't resist:

WELCOME BACK, ELNA JUNE!!!! You are our story-teller, our brilliant observer, the lady who takes the "in-" from "insane", making the mad, choleric Fulgencio perfectly plausible, putting us on alert for the giddily predatory Rebeca, and reminding us to appreciate the beauteous Marina {at least she can spit out more than "¿qué? ¿que qué???"}

May I add that I have noticed a startling resemblance between sweet Olinto and the newly discovered Andean mammal, the olinguito?

Elna June, what a splash on your first Thursday back! Gracias, amiga!
