Corazon Indomable, Episode #58, Thursday, August 1, 2013 - “The Wheels of MariAle’s Vengeance Are Finally Set In Motion…With the Help of an Unexpected Ally”

Note: As usual, some scenes are combined. This one was chopped up even more than we are
used to by now.
Doris tells her father he is so naïve and assures him MariAle
planned everything that happened at the party.
She then accuses her father of liking MariAle too. When he leaves her room, she promises herself
to get MariAle expelled from the island.
MariAle
tells herself that Octavio was very brave in defending her from Karim and she
has to be grateful to him for that, even if she doesn’t want to be. Meanwhile, Octavio lies in his bed telling
himself that MariAle’s flirtations with both Karim and the governor were quite
obvious. He says despite her physical
similarity with MC, they are both very different in soul and spirit. “Karim’s
lover. The nerve of that woman!! Maricruz wouldn’t dare behave in such a
vulgar way. I defended her because she
is a woman, but she doesn’t deserve my love.”
As
MariAle cuddles Lupita and sighs, she has flashbacks of happier times with
Octavio back on the ranch. She then
thought bubbles that she doesn’t do well to remember those good times, because
she can’t forgive his betrayal, his failure to defend her from Lucia and
others, and his abandonment. “And now of course he defended Maria
Alejandra, but not Maricruz. He surely
still feels scorn towards Maricruz. Just
as I should scorn him, because I need to be hard and inflexible to be able to
get vengeance, vengeance without pity, just as he had none towards me.”
The
next morning, MariAle informs Juanita that she wasn’t able to sleep the night
before and admits that the governor accompanied her home the previous
night. She admits to Juanita that she
had fun at the party. (Must be she’s remembering
the kiss and forgetting the attempted kidnapping.) Juanita tells her she needs a man’s affection
and kisses. MariAle says she needs no
one other than her little girl…..MariAle tells Juanita that she despises all
men because one hurt her so much, and her deep wounds will only heal once she
exacts vengeance on him and those who separated her from him. She notes that she already has him in her
hands (nice flashback to “The Kiss”!!!) and feels she should be happy about it,
but she isn’t. While she could get him
to follow her “like a dog” with a single word out of her, deep down she doesn’t
want to do it, so she says. (Must be
deep, deep down, because she’s made it quite clear on the surface that all she
wants is revenge.) Now poor Juanita
looks as confused as much of Viewerville probably is.
Doris
goes to see the police chief and demands that he throw MariAle off the
island…..Doris rants to him about all the party’s happenings. (If I may, Cathyx, I’m borrowing your “shut
up, Doris!!” – there, I feel so much better!!!)….The police chief
promises Doris he will expel MariAle from the island within a week. Doris insists he do it within a day, but he points out he has
to act within the law.
MariAle
worries about Karim’s ire. She wonders
whether to rely on the governor’s help and support, but she is concerned about
the hatred Doris feels for her.
She thinks Octavio is courting Doris and intends to
marry her because she has money. Then
she declares that she will not allow that to happen.
Carola
and Tony discuss the latest news hot off the press….El Zorrillo is at it again,
this time taking twenty thousand dollars, his biggest booty to date.
Doris calls Octavio and informs him that she just asked the
police chief to expel MariAle from the island…..Meanwhile, Miguel is hanging
out at Raiza’s place. She pours drinks
while he tells her she is a “very seductive” woman. It “fascinates” him how well she understands
him. She says she can see he is worried
about something and he needs to forget.
Sounding like he is already drunk, Miguel laughs and says that the worst
thing is that he is completely destroyed.
She promises she will try to ease his pain. He asks if she is as lonely as he is and she
says yes. He then wonders how Lucia must
be suffering.
Sure
enough, back at the ranch, Lucia is still in bed, bemoaning to Esther how sorry
she feels for herself. Esther encourages
her to try to get well and says she won’t let her go back to supervising work
in the fields. (Work, what work?) Lucia insists she must do it because she
can’t let the ranch fail when it is Miguel’s whole life. (Lucia forgets Miguel already made the ranch
a failure.)
Octavio
tells Doris she had no right to do what she did because MariAle
didn’t offend her in any way. He tells
her she is “very unjust and envious.”
She raises her voice to him and Octavio orders her to lower it. Octavio warns her she will not get away with
it. Doris
reacts by declaring that Octavio is also in love with MariAle. He assures her MariAle doesn’t interest him,
but he won’t tolerate her injustice. He
hangs up on her and tells Ed what’s going on, repeating that he will not permit
it.
Doris is fuming because Octavio dared hang up on her. Her brother Andres tries to calm her down,
but she is now breathing heavily and claiming she has never felt so humiliated
by anyone “….and Octavio is willing to argue with me….FOR HER!!!!” Andres tells her she has no good reason for
her behavior. With her eyes about to pop
out of their sockets, she accuses him of also being in love with MariAle, “like
all other men”. He asks if she is
jealous due to their daddy or Octavio.
Ed
tells Octavio his life sure has gotten complicated now. (Now?!!
Surely you jest, Ed.) He warns
“dark days” are ahead with Doris jealous of MariAle.
He also insists that Octavio is “way too interested” in MariAle and he
shouldn’t care so much; besides, what could he possibly do to help her? Octavio says if necessary he will speak with
the governor himself. Ed insists it’s
more convenient to take Doris’ side, especially since she’s trying to get a job for
Miguel. Octavio responds: “At
that price, I want nothing from her. And
I prefer to defend Alejandra Mendoza.”
He says he doesn’t know how yet, but for now he will go warn her.
Miguel
thanks Raiza for her hospitality and prepares to leave after Raiza tells him
she needs her beauty rest so she can be “fresh
and radiant at night, as always” - (Excuse me while I laugh at her self
assurance.) Miguel leaves and Raiza
bemoans what a waste of time it is to talk about silly things. (Trust me, Raiza, it’s not as big a waste of
time as sitting here watching you do it!!!!)
She adds: “But I hope to get my reward…He should sell his lands and share the
loot with the poor, especially this beautiful but poor woman.” (Excuse me while I laugh at her self
adulation.)
I’m
guessing Mrs. Mejia left on the cutting room floor a scene we should have seen
at this point – a scene where Octavio calls, visits, sends a telegram, uses any
form of communication, to inform MariAle about Doris’
scheme to have her expelled from the island.
We’ll have to imagine that scene for ourselves, as now we see MariAle visiting
the governor at his lovely mansion to demand JUSTICE.
Doris admits to Andres that she is jealous, not just about
their daddy and Octavio, but about Andresito himself too. (Sensing those incest vibes again!!!) He tells her she’s crazy to worry about
him. Adding to the incest vibe, Doris
tells him she has noticed the way he looks at MariAle, as if adoring her. (Really?
When? Another scene on the
cutting room floor, perhaps?) Andres
says he doesn’t deny MariAle is a very pretty woman. With intensified heavy breathing and psycho
eyes, Doris fumes even more and swears that MariAle will “pay
dearly” for crossing her path.
The governor
is incredulous that MariAle thinks she will get expelled from the island. He promises her that as long as he is
governor no one will offend her, not even with a mere look in their eyes. Word of honor!!! He proceeds to call the police chief in front
of her……The police chief informs the governor that Doris personally requested
MariAle’s expulsion. The governor orders
him to ignore Doris’ request and to not dare bother MariAle in any way. He adds that he will deal with Doris himself.
Teo approaches
Serafina’s pension disguised as Quasimodo, with hump and deformed face. (Huh?
Why? After all he went through to
get rid of his deformities. Color me
confused.) He sees the red car outside,
and somehow recognizes it as Ed’s car. (How?
Did someone inform him Ed had a red car?
It’s a mystery to me.) Anyway,
Teo is clearly not pleased.
MariAle
thanks the governor and tells him he is a total gentleman. The governor lays it on thick, telling her he
could do no less “for such a
distinguished and beautiful lady”.
Before leaving, MariAle tells the governor that she will be pleased to
personally receive him, at the casino of course. He asks why she resists inviting him to her
home. She says most of her time is spent
at the casino; at home she only has time to rest and care for her daughter. He tells her he is very happy to share her
secret about her daughter and swears to guard it with his own life. He says he hopes their “friendship” will last
a lifetime. She leaves and he thought
bubbles that the ideal thing would be for her to become his wife; then he
angrily wonders how Doris could dare go above his head and authority. He heads out to the seafront terrace and
calls Doris on his cell phone, ordering her to immediately come out
to the terrace. (Must be a massive
mansion to have to call her by phone, since she is clearly home. I’m surprised he didn’t send her a telegram
though!!!!!)
Quasi-Teo
knocks on Araceli’s door. Ed asks if
it’s a friend, then worries that it’s Serafina and decides to hide. A suddenly less prudish Araceli stops him;
she is not the least bit concerned; she says if it’s Serafina and she doesn’t
like seeing him there, then she will simply move and problem solved. Ed then worries that it’s Teo and Araceli
asks if he is “still afraid” of him. Ed
denies it but is clearly worried.
Quasi-Teo now knocks with greater insistence and more loudly. Araceli will not allow Ed to hide; she calls
out to just come in, since the door is unlocked. Quasi-Teo walks in and demands to know what
Ed is doing there. (Lame argument
ensues, with Quasi-Teo accusing Ed of taking advantage of Araceli by accepting
to have lunch with her in her room.
Yawn.)
The
governor tells Doris he will not let anyone go above his authority. Doris can’t believe he would defend “that woman who is not
worth anything.” He tells her MariAle is
a lady, the owner of the casino, and the daughter of an honorable man. He reminds her that the island depends
financially from the tourism, jobs and tax revenues generated by the casinos,
and no one gets expelled without him ordering it. Psycho Doris
declares: “Well, I’m your daughter and I
can give orders too.” (Tell that to the
voters!!!) He tells her she is a spoiled
brat and informs her that he revoked her senseless order; plus he apologized to
MariAle. Doris
accuses him of liking that woman. He
admits it and says he is seriously thinking of asking her to be his wife……Doris
tells her daddy that she hopes he is joking.
Daddy breaks it to her that he is damn serious. Doris warns him that if does it, then both she and Andres will
leave his side forever. (He should say, “Promise?!”,
but alas he remains silent.)
MariAle
visits Raiza in her humble abode. She
tells her she needs to speak with her about something that will interest her….Raiza
tells her she is quite surprised. (No
more than we are, trust us.) MariAle
tells her she’ll surprise her even more when she tells her the reason she is
there. Surprisingly, Raiza tells her to
consider her as her friend, as she was for her father. MariAle tells her she believes her and
proceeds to say that she is there to propose a deal to her.
The
governor asks Doris how she knows what her brother would do if he marries
MariAle. Doris
says: “Andres does what I will him to do, because he DOES love me. And if I tell him we are leaving this house,
he will go with me.” (More incest
vibes. Yuck.) Daddy reminds her Andres owes him respect,
and she reminds him that he never concerned himself about them. He threatens to send her to a girls’ boarding
school, but she reminds him that despite her childish behavior she is in fact an
adult, and so is her brother. She tells
him he has been so uninvolved that he never noticed his kids were “already a
man and a woman.” (For some reason that
comment increased the incest vibes, too.
Ewww.)
Raiza
asks what kind of deal MariAle proposes.
“A somewhat dirty deal, as are
many deals here,” replies MariAle.
Raiza asks why she thinks she would accept. “Because
you want money, and I will give it to you.
Let’s set a price.” MariAle
adds that she knows Raiza is friends with Miguel and that she has her eyes set
on him because he owns a productive ranch.
(Productive? Excuse me while I
laugh again.) MariAle then tells her
what she wants is for Raiza to figure out a way to force Miguel to sell his
lands or to mortgage them, whether to give the money to Raiza or to gamble it
at the casino. Raiza wonders what
MariAle gains from that and MariAle tells her she wants to be able to buy those
lands….MariAle tells Raiza not to bother asking her why she wants those lands,
because she is not about to tell her the reason. She promises her a 10% commission for every
IOU Miguel signs, plus an extra amount later on. She explains she wants Raiza to “incite him to gamble”, get him to sign
IOUs to the casino, and then she will demand payment when it’s most convenient
for her. Raiza wonders if Miguel can be
convinced, and MariAle tells her that’s her job. But she warns her not to try to have a
serious relationship with Miguel because he is married and adores his wife…..Raiza
asks what happens if she doesn’t accept the deal; MariAle says then Miguel will
lose his job in the casino and she will have him expelled from the island -
(looks like she stole Doris’ playbook!!!) – plus Raiza will miss out on earning
a nice sum of money. Raiza figures she
has no choice but to accept, to which MariAle responds: “Perfect. You know what? You are going to gain the love of your
life…..Money.” “You are pretty cruel, aren’t you?”
“I’m just honest,” says
MariAle.
Our
resident drunk Miguel visits Octavio in his hotel room, but doesn’t forget to bring
a few bottles along with him. Octavio is
concerned that within a year the drinking will destroy Miguel. Miguel says that won’t happen within a year
because he is already destroyed. Our
anti-hero Octavio has the nerve to tell Miguel not to be a coward and to
confront life’s adversities. (Pot, meet
kettle.)…..Octavio again suggests he sell the land and the cattle, but Miguel
says he would rather die than lose or give away his lands. Octavio tells him those lands are not worth
more than his wife and child, but Miguel confesses he is no longer sure that he
loves Lucia…..Octavio pretends to be the voice of reason and tells Miguel he is
just confused about his feelings. Miguel
gets worked up, wondering why Lucia didn’t trust him. Then Miguel lashes out at Octavio, accusing
him of having provoked everyone’s tragedy, Lucia’s, his, the little savage’s,
it’s all his fault. (Yup, pretty much
sums it up.)
Doris is still going at it with daddy on the terrace. Now she wants to know if he has already found
a job for Miguel. He reminds her it’s
not so easy. “See, you can’t please me with anything. Oh, but if she were asking for it, you would
take away someone’s job just like that,” snapping her fingers for added
effect. She demands he do it and tells
him he has no other option. (Shut up, Doris. At this point I’d like to imagine that
somewhere on the cutting room floor is a scene where daddy smacks her
senseless, to teach her some respect.)…..Daddy gives in and agrees to “look
into” what kind of job he can find for Miguel.
He then questions why she is so in love with the pilotonto and tells her
he doesn’t want her to suffer for love, to which she responds that women always
suffer for love because men are perverse.
Raiza
reminds MariAle that for Miguel to be able to gamble he can’t continue being
the casino’s porter. MariAle agrees but
suggests he can just work in the daytime so he will have the nights freed up to
gamble. “Consider it done. I will
arrange it, Raiza.”
Miguel
asks Octavio what he thinks of Raiza…..Octavio tells Miguel that Raiza is an
opportunist and he would do best to not lean on her so much. She is only interested in what a man could
give her in metal form. (Well, no, we
already know she will take the same from a woman, since she accepted MariAle’s
deal.) By now a happy, clueless drunk,
Miguel assures Octavio with a big smile that not even as a drop-dead drunk
would he sell his lands. (Not once in
their conversation did they refer to them as “their” lands – and to think this
all started because Octavio wanted his share of those lands so badly. Oblivio, indeed.)
A very
stern looking MariAle drives along the lovely coastline, as she thought
bubbles: “I will have him in my hands.
Miguel Narvaez can no longer save himself from my vengeance. I will take everything away from him.” And for added effect she declares out
loud: “I will leave him out on the street.”
Ugh –
near the end of the episode, and we are back in Araceli’s pension room, in a
most anticlimactic scene, with Ed and Quasi-Teo still going at it, exchanging
endless accusations about Ed’s alleged bad intentions and QT butting in when he
has no right to do so. Shut up, Ed and
QT. Araceli breaks in and reminds QT
that he is her friend and she appreciate him, but Ed is her boyfriend and she
is going to marry him. QT finally tells
her that he has a job lined up for her, back on the island…..He says he has a
friend who wants to set up an antique shop on the island (yes, because beach and
antique go so well together, don’t they!!!)…Araceli is excited. Ed says it sounds good, as long as it’s a
decent job; QT is offended at the mere suggestion that it isn’t.
Muhammed
is again trying to convince Karim to return home. Karim has no intention of leaving the field
wide open for Octavio, who he can tell is also attracted to MariAle, even if he
is practically the boyfriend of the governor’s daughter. Speaking of MariAle, he intends to do
whatever he can think of to put MariAle in her place, starting with showing up
at her home.
Back on
the ranch, Esther is busy putting the moves on Jose Antonio, big time!!!! She thinks he needs some help, but he doesn’t
want help that will result in a lower salary for him. She asks if he is saving to get married. He says yes, although he has no girlfriend. Hard for her to believe it. He clarifies he is in love, but with a girl
who is “far” from him. She asks if far
in distance or in class. He doesn’t
quite understand, but she offers to become his personal tutor. (Viewerville suspects she’ll be very hands-on
- wink, wink!!!)….Esther says it’s settled – no ifs, and or buts – and declares
that starting the next day, she will begin to give Jose Antonio classes. She draws closer to him and tells him he is
very handsome. He nervously asks her not
to play with him. She puts her finger to
his lips to shoosh him, telling him that it’s not a game, that he has beautiful
eyes, and lips that are very tempting.
She asks if anyone has ever kissed him and moves in for the kill….only
to be interrupted by Lucia, who yells “Esther!!!” and demands to know what she
is doing.
Previews: Octavio takes a romantic moment and again
ruins it with his idiocy, once again turning on MariAle’s fury; fate intervenes
and Octavio finally meets Lupita.

LatinaMD, this was just stellar. I am continually amazed at the great recaps our crew gives us daily on some of this nonsense. Wonderful!!
To start #SHUTUPDORIS! Oh my lord, we have to deal with MC's daily harangues on her vengenance, now we get to have a daily dose of Doris rantings. Felt a tad sorry for the governator to have to realize his lovely little daughter is not just spoiled, but a friggin' lunatic. But then again, he probably is the reason she's so spoiled to begin with.
Note to Doris: Your "room" is being prepared in the ward when we wrap the plot. What color do you prefer for your padded walls?
I was so confused about Teo.1 showing up. But I think the "friend" with the antique store is going to be Teo.2. Clever? no, kind of creepy to me. And exactly how much money has Teo stolen/hidden away all these years. That surgery had to be pricey, he's gambling and now possibly opening a business. Adjusting beanie.
I so need a Solita/Tobias sighting. I need to see a character or two that I can smile at and park the frustration. Right now all we have is Lupita, and dang, you get her mother's rantings whenever we see her.

Good job on a somewhat slow episode.
The actriz that plays Doris must find this role liberating. She played Ana Brenda's friend in La Que No Podia Amar and all she did was cry because Ana Paula was made miserable by Rog 24/7.
So, what's up with Teo? 3 personalities: Teo the monster, the pretty boy, and le zorrila.

Thanks LatinaMD. I'm glad you found 'Shut Up Doris' useful. We all know what she's saying without having to put it into words. So just writing the 3 little words is very useful and economic.
I now believe it was Teo who has been stealing. That's the only way he could have that much money for everything he's doing. I thought it was too obvious before, but with these writers, anything goes.
I also like your additions from the cutting room floor. We all know there is a flow problem here and we need to look at the floor for clues.
Big question: How could the police kick MA off the island? On what grounds? Did she break the law? Even if she did, how could they kick her off the island? Is this like survivor and she gets voted off?

BTW, have you all heard the news?! As of yesterday, "Corazon Indomable" is officially the #1 rated novela on Univision, confirmed on a tweet by Univision itself, and it has remained #1 in Mexico for over a month now. (I must confess, despite all the plot and editing issues, I still find it to be the most entertaining novela on air right now, so I'm not surprised.)

As of yesterday, "Corazon Indomable" is officially the #1 rated novela on Univision, confirmed on a tweet by Univision itself, and it has remained #1 in Mexico for over a month now. (I must confess, despite all the plot and editing issues, I still find it to be the most entertaining novela on air right now, so I'm not surprised.)

Congratulations to José Antonio on his friendship with Ester. So far I'm not really seeing a downside to this... private lessons... I'll bet they include a dimension that Maricruz's express education left out.

Well Latina, like they say, "it's a train wreck, but I can't stop wanting to see how it all gets cleaned up." This TN is classic with that and is sooooo melodramatic that it appeals to a wide range of people: people who love the drama and angst, and those, like many of us that think it's sort of a frustrating, campy hoot and keep turning in.I've even tried to talk myself out of watching one night, and darn, if my finger didn't just punch in the Univision code. And frankly, it's so much more fun to comment when the beanie is imploding.
I do agree with you cathyx whole heartedly that the down side is that Univision keeps thinking Meija, Mr and Mrs, have the midas touch. Heaven help us.
I could use another Cuando at the 7:00 EST hour.

It was interesting to see Teo turn back into a "monster." In fact, I watched it a few more times. (It's around 23 minutes into the episode, counting commercial time, if anybody wants to see it again.)
At first I didn't realize what was happening. I thought that maybe the TN was out of sequence. But Manuel Landeta did an amazing job, changing his face, posture, and gait as he walked down the sidewalk. I bet he was great in "Cats."

Great recap Latina, and I felt like you were right there in the family room watching with me and carping about the silly scenes and disturbing family dynamics in the governor's mansion. Keep wondering if Mrs. Governor committed suicide just to get out of there!

Awesome recap LatinaInMD. ITA with the editing this episode. It was horrendous and the flow was awful too. I found myself wondering many times when did this happen. Oh well...

You are right Vivi...typing error. I meant Alejandro and Oblivio. I thought that Karim was on her list too but he didn't even give her the time of day so that does not count.
@Aleta--I was trying to explain to my husband how amazing that Teo transformation scene was, but alas I had already erased the episode. I am just in awe of Mr. Landeta's abilities. He should get an award in this role, but I'm sure it's too small a part. I just can't get over all the affectations he manages to consistently keep on camera (the mouth, the walk...though he loses points for not being able to tell wardrobe where the hump should be.)

CI is a much bigger hit in Mexico than it is in the US, a bona fide phenom down there, and that ultimately is what matters most to Televisa.
CI has done well in the US. For its whole run so far, it's drawing basically what Un Refugio para el amor drew in the time slot when it went to an hour, and much better than Corona de Lagrimas. CI will no doubt go even higher in the actual revenge episodes, but I think it will drop afterwards (the show gets a whole lot worse, IMO, after around ep 100 - with a bunch more additions to the cast - the Mexican audience is still eating it up, I'm not sure US audiences will)
On Univision, CI has been the fourth most watched novela its run except for two weeks where it was the third most watched novela. That's where you would expect the timeslot to perform. CI might wind up the most watched novela this week based on a good Monday, but that is more about Porque el amor manda, La Tempestad and Que Bonito Amor all having a very bad week (and that's after last week when both PEAM & QBA had their highest single day ratings yet in the US, assisted by Amores Verdaderos final week) than CI having a particularly good week.
More interesting, broadly speaking, just to demonstrate how dominant Univision remains - Telemundo is probably going to wind up with its strongest season ever (TV season for Uni & Telemundo runs September to September, so its almost over), and Univision is having a fairly mediocre year, yet Telemundo still won't have even half the viewers Univision gets.
Prime time ratings for the 2012-13 season to date, Telemundo is averaging 1.43 million viewers in primetime (780,000 in the adults 18-49 demo). Univision is averaging 3.66 million viewers (1.8 million in adults 18-49).

This show is freaking me out! Teobaldo suddenly appearing as his old self, bug-eyed Doris with her ranting, Maricruz looking oh-so-innocent and girlish in pink bribing Raiza to intice Miguel to gamble his land away.......
