La Tempestad, cap. 4, Thursday, August 1: "Give a man a fish and he will eat for a day. Teach him how to fish, and he will sit in a boat and drink beer all day."

--George Carlin

Captain Damián Fabré is stuck in the pokey accused of raping the mayor's daughter, Esthercita.  He may be criminally hot, but everybody -- well almost  everybody -- knows he is no criminal.  It was Little E who jumped his bones .

Dam Fab and the Night Visitors
Dam Fab's first caller, Marina Reverte, offers him a perfectly good way out of his dilemma -- Just marry Esthercita, you boob!

What's Marina's interest in all this?  She needs to keep those fish coming to her packing plant.  And that means she needs Dam Fab on the job.  But hey, if Dam Fab isn't interested, he can rot in jail and she'll find another captain and crew -- somewhere.

He listens and then laughs, reminding her he saw her splashing around in the water after he threw her overboard.  And guess what?  When her wet clothing stuck to her body, she looked pretty good.  In fact, it was the only time she looked like a woman.

Well I never!  Slap!  !Estúpido!

And so the mating dance between these two crazy kids continues.

Meanwhile Hernán is doing an Eddie Haskell, sucking up to Marina's mom, Beatriz.  He shows up at her house with a lovely bouquet of flowers for her.  Poor deluded Beatriz is just happy Marina has someone in town she can call a friend.  Because Marina is a bit late in arriving, Hernán and Beatriz set out for the Procession together.

Dam Fab's face is inches from Marina's.  But he has no desire to kiss her.  Harrumph!  Like he's Mister Irresistible or something.
[Um.  Excuse me.  He kind of is.  If Michelangelo were around today, sweet William would be his David.  But we'll give you time to catch up to the rest of us, babycakes.]

Once Marina is gone, Dam Fab rubs his jaw where she slapped him and he smiles.
[M & M's are melting in hands all over the Patio.  Keep your chocolates on ice, people.]

Little E is in a bad way.  When her crappy friend Mayuya approaches her and asks if she's been drinking, Little E tells her to get lost.  "Whatever," says Mayuya.  Haz lo que te de la gana.  When Mayuya walks away, Little E mimics her: Haz lo que te de la gana.  Then she takes another swig from her bottle. [This actress is fun to watch.]

Eros Doesn't Live Here Anymore
Shy Lázaro and tragic Jazmín are in an upstairs room at La Guacamaya.  She is laboriously  unbuttoning her dress while Lázaro looks away.  Not only is it his first time, it turns out it's hers too.  When he suggests they just talk -- he'll pay her just the same -- she eagerly accepts.  What's his story?  He lives with his widowed ma and yes, he's a happy guy.  It takes a little prodding to get her to tell her story -- it would be dangerous and he might kill them both.  He?

Cande has to tell the scuzzy guy at the bar it's time to go.  She's closing early because even bar girls -- maybe especially bar girls -- need to get to the Procession.  Scuzzy is waiting for his girl.  Cande invites him to wait out on the street. [I guess we know who he is.]

Jazmín stands at the window and points out the scuzzball to the still virginal  Lázaro:  that's Nereo, the man who owns her.  Lázaro can't believe what he is hearing -- no one can own another person!  Jazmín swears him to secrecy and then tells him her grim history. She was abducted by a gang trafficking in women; then Nereo bought her.  Oy vey!  Lázaro promises he'll figure out a way to help her.

People are assembled in front of the church waiting for the Procession to begin.  Nearly everyone is in white and many carry white flowers.  The image of the Virgin has been placed on a platform and decorated with floral garlands.

One Night Visitor, Olinto, the accountant at the packing plant, is turned away when he tries to gain access to Dam Fab's cell.  It seems someone else got there first -- Mercedes Artigas.

Mercedes isn't immune to Dam Fab's charms.  She says, as she touches his cheek, that she is struck by how much he resembles his father, Michel.  [Good save, Mercedes.]  She knows all about Little E crying rape.  But unless the girl tells the truth, Dam Fab will rot in jail and the packing plant will go under.

Poor Lázaro.  His ma turns out to be an overprotective scold.  [Let's hope he gets some heroics under his belt before this is all over.]  Ma has no doubt that Dam Fab is guilty as charged.

The two crooked cops snicker about Dam Fab's fate and look forward to getting him off their backs when they dump him in the capital in the morning.

Padre Tomás shows up to lead the Procession.  Lázaro arrives at about the same time.  It is the crew of the Tempestad who are to carry the Virgin.  But they are all ready to jump ship when they hear the news about Dam Fab.  Padre holds them back, however, insisting that they wait until after the Procession.  They listen to him because, for all their macho posturing, their drinking, their whoring, their fighting, they are all good Catholic boys.

Fulgencio and Delfina are front and center in the crowd.  They don't exactly blend in. She wears mostly white but her top is dark, and her pearls seem out of place.  Ful-of-himself-io is a stand-out in his dark blue suit and his scowl.

The crowd moves slowly under the colorful paper banners.  They chant the traditional prayers.  Their voices carry to the cell where Dam Fab is confined.  He, too, prays to the Virgin for intercession.  She knows he is innocent.

Je ne regrette rien
Now it's Little E's turn to visit Dam Fab.  She blubbers drunkenly that she is sorry for getting him in trouble, but she didn't accuse him of anything.  She loves him and doesn't regret what happened last night.  Dam Fab reminds her that he's the one getting hauled off the prison.  Besides what happened between them never should have happened in the first place.  He sends her away.  As she leaves, she makes a drunken vow:  No one is going to do him harm.

The crowd outside continues its prayerful song.  Hernán has latched onto Marina and walks smugly at her side.  Ful-of-himself-io looks heavenward and rolls his eyes.  Church bells sound.  Cande hurries to catch up with the Procession.

Fulgencio is not the only fashion iconoclast.  Mercedes is in black from head to toe and wears a heavy black veil.  She prays for her daughters, especially her lost daughter, Magdalena, and steps forward to touch the garment of the Virgin.

José identifies the people she sees with Marina: Olinto, Hernán and…  "And Beatriz Reverte," says Mercedes.  She has known Beatriz for many years, ever since Marina came to live in her house.  She has monitored her treatment of the girl.  "That's the woman that Marina believes is her mother," says José.  And he adds: "They love each other as if they were mother and daughter."

Dam Fab's Madrina has a really cool and scary dream except for the part where the bird lands on her chest which is just, you know, nasty.
Dam Fab's madrina walks along the shoreline at night, her walking stick in one hand, a basket of greens in the other.  Suddenly she drops the basket, her hand flies to her heart, she loses her balance.

We see dreamlike images of Hernán and Fulgencio and we hear their voices:  "Damián Fabré is standing in our way!"  "We have to get rid of him right away!"

Madrina falls to the sand.

"I'll kill him!"  Dam Fab is running.  Another voice says: "I killed him!"  A young woman, perhaps little E, says "You raped me!" Dam Fab looks around him wildly.  An older voice, perhaps Mercedes, echoes: "You raped me."

Marina, I Just Met a Girl Named Marina
A dream-woman calls out:  I'm in the sea, I live in the sea, my name is the sea -- come to me, come to me…  Dam Fab walks into the sea until he is completely swallowed by the water.

The old woman is lying on the sand when a white sea bird* lands on her chest.
[*Hey.  I don't do birds.  That's the best I can come up with.]  She wakes up and calls out:  Damián, ¿te sientes bien? (Are you okay?)

The Lady in Black greets the Lady in White
Mercedes approaches Beatriz and introduces herself as the person who hired Marina to run the plant.  [Oh ho!  So Beatriz doesn't know Mercedes!]  Bea is gracious but expresses her doubts about the job.  Mercedes, however, is sure that Marina is up to the challenge.

The Procession has reached the water.  The Virgin and her attendants are set out on a boat and three or four smaller simple boats accompany the first.  They are all festooned with flowers.  The people in the boats hold torches.

Mercedes visits the grave of Michel Fabré.  "Here I am," she says, "as always.  I miss you so much."

The padre says a prayer for the safety of the fishermen.

We hear Fulgencio kvetching that he is tired of this circus.  A Mozart Requiem Mass sounds in the background.

Mercedes tells José that even though she didn't get to talk to Marina, she is ready to go back to Mexico City now.

Fulgencio keeps grumbling, Delfina keeps praying and the Virgin is carried back to the church where she is once again safely ensconced.

And the truth, plus a little body English, shall set you free.
The Tempestad crew spots the crooked cops and they demand an explanation for Dam Fab's arrest.  Fulgencio jumps in and screams that their captain is a scoundrel and Delfina says that he abused their daughter.  Now Miss Prissy Marina joins the fray and says it's all a lie.  Little E went to bed with Captain Fabré because that's what she decided to do.  Fulgencio gets all "How dare you…" but Marina stands her ground.  She heard the truth from Little E herself.  Her parents put Dam Fab in jail because they didn't want the real story to come out.

Surprisingly it is Delfina who speaks up and confirms what Marina has just said: Captain Fab is innocent!  Fulgencio is furious of course.  And who is going to believe Marina?  It's her word against his.  Now Hernán's chimes in, telling Fulgencio to watch how he talks to Marina.  Finally, Little E herself weighs in with a scene-stealing drunken declaration from a nearby balcony:  Dam Fab is innocent! [she leans over the railing, dangerously close to a wardrobe malfunction].  I jumped him.  He never raped me.  I made him have sex with me…

Delfina covers her mouth.  Fulgencio is ready to self-combust.

porque como dice mi padre, yo soy una cualquiera.  (Because as my father says, I'm a slut.)

Little E pulls a bottle from her bag and takes a healthy swig.  Delfina faints in Fulgencio's arms.

"I'm not the victim here.  I came on to him.  And it was the best night of my life.  And I would do it again.  Damián, I love you!"

Fulgencio roars at the gawkers to get away.  He leads Delfina home and leaves little E for the doctor and Mayuya to deal with.

Dam Fab's crew heads to the jail and demands his immediate release. Toribio is reluctant but does finally unlock the cell.  Dam Fab is free.  The guys tell him about Little E's drunken declaration.  "Ay, pobre muchacha" says Dam Fab.

Beatriz and Marina thank Hernán for all his attentions.  "What a nice boy he is!" remarks Bea.  [Oy. If only she knew.]

Little E just wants to die.  But it's okay.  The doctor is giving her an injection.  To calm her.  Mayuya has plunked a bag of ice cubes on her friend's head and seems determined to hold it there.  And the padre is trying to offer moral comfort -- she did the right thing by telling the truth, and God always forgives sinners if they are truly repentant.  God may forgive her, she says, but her father won't.

She may be right.  Fulgencio is at this very moment in full rant: he never wants to see Little E again, she is dead to him, he's going to send her away to a convent.  And Dam Fab will pay for humiliating him.  In blood!

Madrina joins Dam Fab and the crew, tells him she dreamed he was in danger and had to come to see him.  He thanks them all.  The guys think it calls for some partying but Madrina says she and Dam Fab are going to church to thank the Virgin for setting things right.

Avances:  Hernán and Fulgencio plot to destroy ship and crew.

Thank you, Novela Maven, for this very entertaining recap! I love your name for Damian, when you call him Dam Fab, I supposed you mean
DAMN FABULOUS, right?

I still think WL is ugly with that hair, but looking at his body helps a lot :)

So far my favorite character is Esthercita, the girls knows how to make a scene...

Ximena N is very pretty and she and WL make a decent pair, so far. She is really making an effort to do a good job with the part, although she still has a lot to learn.

I really don't care about Lazaro and his new lady friend, I hope this B plot doesn't take to much air time.

I started laughing at the title (inspired!) and smiled through the entire recap. NovelaMaven, you can make the finest episode shine even brighter and liven up and enhance not so stellar episodes to the point that by the time we are finished reading, we don't remember the dull, just the poignant.

"They listen to him because, for all their macho posturing, their drinking, their whoring, their fighting, they are all good Catholic boys." Perfection. "Ful-of-himself" and "overprotective scold" were just a few more of my favs.

Adriana Noel, I loved Dam Fab too, but I suspect, it might mean Damian Fab?

I'm enjoying the "mating dance". Right now neither Dam nor Marina are cutting each other slack, but a begrudging respect seems to be slowly emerging. Of course, Dam has to leave his neanderthal ideas behind and try to join the 21st century in order to truly progress.

"Ful-of-himself" is dominating his scenes with his fury (and those dulcet tones - sigh)...

Hernán has no charm (for me) whatsoever. Marina doesn't seem all that impressed either.

Now that Esthecita has drunkenly revealed (to the entire town) that Dam is innocent, she was the pursuer, and that she lied, it will be interesting to see how and if her reputation will ever be restored. Isn't one of the virtues of being a good vilain the ability to do your dirty work and sow your seeds of discontent, quietly and behind the scenes? ;)

NovelaMaven, thank you for starting my day off so well.

Diana

The title is hilarious! I liked your take on Ester. "Yeah, I did him! I loved it and I would do him again! "

Me too! And I would proudly take the walk of shame with my head held high!

Thanks for the cute recap NM.

Cynderella

Diana, I know what Dam Fab was meant to be, I just prefer my vesrion better :)

Cynderella, now THAT would be a truly good walk of shame... one can only wish...

NovelaMaven:

Thanks so much for this fab recap!

I'm surprised by Estercita. I never thought she would confess to the whole town. I feel sorry for her, with that putz of a Papa. And the Get Thee To a Nunnery, really???

I like how Marina is standing up for him, when she really doesn't like his behavior toward her. I agree he does need to wake up and smell, well the coffee and get with the times. After he dumped her in the drink she is still defending him. Hmmmmm.......

Hernan is a big brown noser. Suck up to Mummy and get in good with her. That said, I too like the way he is defending Marina to Fool Gen Cio. So who is the boss of whom here?

I wonder what the past is between Mercedes and Michel? She was rubbing that grave rather lovingly.

Looking forward to tonight see what the plan is!

Apologies Adriana Noel - and I like your version!

Madelaine, you had me chuckling with "She was rubbing that grave rather lovingly" - great line.

Diana

Fabulous recap NovelaMaven!

I really enjoyed this episode...well, what I really loved was Estercita's epic drunken confession in front of the whole town. She is very entertaining. But, if I were her, I wouldn't return home. I'd take refuge with the priest. If Foolgencio slapped her around when he privately found out she boinked Dam Fab, just think about how he'll react to her making a spectacle of herself and their family in front of the town.

Novela Maven, I got so excited last night while watching this episode because I just knew we were in for the best recap ever! Cap #4 was chock full o'nuts and action from beginning to end. LOVE your recap title and I knew I'd better set my cup of tea right down before continuing.

It's hard to choose a favorite line, but I really liked the bit about the crew's drinking and whoring but being good Catholic boys. And Dam Fab ('fraid that's a keeper folks) and Ful-of-himself-io are inspired brilliance. And comparing Hernan to Eddie Haskell...well you nailed that one.

"M&Ms are melting all over the patio", snort! Mayuya "determined to keep the ice on her friend's head" had me cracking up because that poor actress was having a heck of a time what with Estercita rolling her head all over the place.

Speaking of Estercita, can Laura Carmine chew up a scene or what? Wow! Between her wailing, Cesar Evora's epic blustering, and Monica Miguel's fainting spells I think we are in for a roller coaster ride. Can't wait!

Thanks again NM. I do love the way your mind works. Thanks for sharing it with us and taking us along for the ride.

Oh, and I also got super excited when I saw that Nereo is being played by none other than Gilberto de Anda. (Remember the odious Gasca from Alborada?) He's one of the best bad guys in the business, IMHO. I just love to hate him.

Gracias NovelaMaven

Fab Dam would be a better name for guapisímo.

Saw the Sabrito commercial, cute
So how many is that?
M&M
Samsung
Wireless TV, which I guess is also Samsung
Sabrito
Pepsi
I read about Ruffles potato chips but haven't seen it
He is delicious!

Diana, don't worry about it!
Suffice it to say that whenever I see Dam Fab written in a recap, what I think is Damn Fabulous - and that is a simple, yet effective way to describe WL.

I also love the soundtrack, when they first started airing LT in Mexico I was obsessed with it and now the obsession is back.
Today I'm cleaning the house, while listening this and Mijares on repeat - ohh, good times!

I do remember Gasca but didn't recognize him, he was odious.

Thanks NovelaMaven, this is hilarious. my favorite lines:

"Um. Excuse me. He kind of is."

and

"M&M's are melting in hands all over the Patio. Keep your chocolates on ice, people."

Excellent.

It's only the 4th episode and they already brought on the white bird. Wow. Cue the rats.

Carlos

In the Department of Announcements and Clarifications

The Storm Cellar™ is now open for business and will, of course, be offering a specialty line of Tempestad and TempeStud products. Anita has been invited to be a full partner as well as administrator of the store. Marina Reverte is studying her contract. We can expect a reply from Anita shortly.

Some of you might be interested in the entry I found in an etymological dictionary in the book department of The Storm Cellar:

Dam Fab: 1. A nickname formed by shortening the first and last names of the character, Damián Fabré. 2. A play on words based on the homophony of 'Dam' and 'damn' in English and the common use of 'damn' as an intensifier. 3. An allusion to the BBC sitcom, Absolutely Fabulous, or Ab Fab. 3. An allusion to David Zepeda's horny robot, Dam Stoopid, in The Passion Pits, beside which Levy's Dam Fab looks like Olivier.

In other words, Diana and Adriana Noel -- you are both right!

[snort]

Ah Novela Maven, I love me a recapper who can quote Shakespeare one moment and George Carlin the next. You are an equal opportunity delight.

Really liked your crisp rendition of the "mating dance" between these two pretty protagonists, and like everybody else that delicious quote "because for all their macho posturing, their drinking, their whoring, they're all good Catholic boys." Riiiight.

And a personal favorite
"Je ne regrette rien". I'll have Edith Piaf singing in my head all day, and will enjoy every minute of it.

Haven't seen this yet, had to sub for another teacher in an early morning class, but given your description of the madrina weirdness and Fulgencio's rumblings, can't wait! Thanks NM.

Thanks for the fabulous recap, NovelaMaven! Very entertaining recap of a great episode.

I'll say it again. Love Laura Carmine!

What a fabulous recap of Epi 4! Thank You!!!!

Love the new nickname - Dam Fab is perfect for the character and WL....isn't he Fab even with the bad hair? Great chemistry with Ximena in the jail cell scene....that smile after the slap...those M&M's are definitely melting!

Good episode, but the recap is totally AB FAB! Can't wait for more recaps from NovelaMaven!

Novela Maven: deeelightful recap!! Thanks so much. My fave - "Like he's Mister Irresistible or something.
[Um. Excuse me. He kind of is. If Michelangelo were around today, sweet William would be his David. But we'll give you time to catch up to the rest of us, sweetcheeks.]" it funny cuz all last night, I kept saying to myself too ...Dam Fab.. and he sure is.

I am so relieved they didn't prolong that "he raped me' storyline. that truth serum Estercita was drinking must've been potent.

NovelaMaven, now you have truly outdone yourself. Your reference was amazing, but finding a way to include Ab Fab??? Incredible.

One for the books. (I'm sure Anita has already noted this)...

Only 4 episodes in and the recaps and comments are in the stratosphere.

Diana

Wow. I LOVE this. Great recap; I love the lines everyone else mentioned and all, and I especially like the Dam Fab apodo.

I STILL haven't found time to watch this, what with trying to nail everything down so I can go on vacation, but one of these days I am going to catch up and join in the fun. I am so excited that The Storm Cellar is already open! I'm guessing there's a good stock of cork-soled shoes?

Thank you NovelaMaven for this fabulous recap!!

This episode was my favorite so far. I loved Esthercita's drunken speech to the entire town. I am glad she told the truth and that Damian was set free.

Hernan's good manners and smile are so fake!! Poor deluded Beatriz indeed. I wonder how Hernan knew where Marina lives. Did Marina tell him where she live or was he stalking her again? Hmm.

Variopinta:

William also did an Oral B Crest commercial.

http://youtu.be/B6KaRRoVprk

Estercita was awesome "Yeah, I had sex with him and what?! I'd do it again in a heartbeat!" and her mom fainting, it was just classic! Would it be way too out there to guess that she might be the other twin? She is an only child after all...

Eli - not too far out there, imo!

What is a Storm Cellar?
I want to be in on the joke.

Esthercita is to much, with her: "Yeah, I tapped that a.ss!" When she was saying how much she enjoyed it, too, the camera gave us a close up of Marina... I predict some horny dreams in her future - and possibly ours, too - btw, have any of you ever dreamed with a tn actor?

Adriana Noel - The only TN actor who ever showed up in a dream for me is Alejandro (Alex) Sirvent, "Rafael" on Amor Bravio. Guapissimo!

Adriana- As much as I've tried, CdlF has never entered my dreams. :)

@Vivi, mine neither :((
And how I tried...
But I did dream a soap actor a few years ago.
Form outside the tn world, I wouldn't mind Matt Bomer showing up in my dreams (I know he's gay, but I won't hold that against him).

Adriana Noel:

A STORM CELLAR (also called a storm shelter) is an underground space, kind of like a basement, where people go for safety during severe weather, particularly tornadoes. If you have ever seen the movie, The Wizard of Oz, you may remember Dorothy's family running to the storm cellar for safety.

Cellar (basement or underground level of a dwelling, sometimes used for storage) and seller (vendor or someone who sells something) sound alike in English.

As you know, La Tempestad can be translated as "the storm."

So there you have it -- another play on words. "El sótano de la tempestad," or "la tienda de la tormenta" -- well you get the idea, right?

Yesterday was a terrible, horrible, no good, very bad day and the last thing I felt like doing was writing this recap. But I am very glad that I did -- writing it was therapeutic and reading your comments has been a blast. Thank you everyone for your kind words.

Adriana Noel, I continue to be amazed that anyone is worrying about WL's hair. Prioritize, woman!!! :D

Diana, I'm also interested in seeing where Little E's future lies. The writers have certainly given her some of the meatiest lines so far and she has made the most of them.

Cyn, Thanks. So you're identifying with LittleE?

Mads, Keep your eye on Hernán, especially in the scenes with Ful-of-himself-io. He holds his own as an actor. Also check out the shot of him in the titles when he's leaning back, shirtless on his boat. It gives you a little hint of what La Reina del Sur fans saw in this actor.

Vivi, yeah, Fulgencio is a scary guy. No woman is safe in his house.

Sylvia, you know that a great part of the pleasure here is that mind meld thing, imagining how our CarayCaray buddies are going to see and describe what we see on the small screen. I'm thrilled that you found something to enjoy here. Now careful with that tea.

Novela Maven, sorry you're having a bad time but your recap rocks!! Loved the title, and "the mating dance" very apt view of it all.
OK; help me; I also want in on the storm cellar joke; and I know what a storm cellar is.
OK; what is the significance of the dove flying on the woman in white I guess in her dream (or trance?).
Does any one else think Jasmin might be the other twin? Or is she too young?

Variopinta, I wouldn't be surprised if WL made more money off an American commercial (with residuals and all) than he does for a whole novela. ( I think the Tide people should take advantage of his sparkling white tee shirts and buy a few spots during the show, with or without WL).

Carlos. Please no. No rats. Though we should start keeping track of magical omens and Objects Fraught With Significance. So: white bird, rag doll, what else?

JudyB, When Little E said "No me arrepiento," I thought almost simultaneously of you and Edith. [No kidding.] I was tempted to use it (Je ne regrette rien) as a title but didn't quite have the nerve.

Did I tell you I am tickled pink that you are watching and discussing this one? yay!

Marta in NY, Thanks! As I said above, I agree about Laura. (She may end up outshining the protagonista, don't you think?)

Lainda, I don't know if you've commented before but I am very glad to see you here and grateful for your nice words. Yes, hair schmair! :)

Shallowgal,
"I am so relieved they didn't prolong that "he raped me' storyline."
Amen! That could have been one dismal plot thread but instead it was a real firecracker.

Julia,
"I am so excited that The Storm Cellar is already open! I'm guessing there's a good stock of cork-soled shoes?"
Yes. I believe you will find them with the Personal Flotation Devices, Non-Surgical Division.

Mauricio, Thanks for posting the toothpaste commercial. And good question about how Hernán knew where Marina lives (though it is a small pueblo). Speaking of stalking, it turns out Mercedes is one up on him. He's been stalking Marina since high school but Mercedes has been stalking Beatriz and Marina for what? Twenty-five years? Sheesh.

Eli, Little E as Magdalena? Hah. Well the name would fit. I guess we'll have to wait and see. :)

EMarie, Thank you.

About the Storm Cellar -- check out my comment above at 4:56 and let me know if it doesn't make sense, ok?

About the white bird -- in Christianity, a white dove represents the Holy Spirit or peace. But in telenovelas and dreams -- who knows?

Jazmín as the missing twin? Could be. But I'd be surprised -- she doesn't have the 'glam' factor. Personally, I'm hoping the twins are identical since that opens the door to a horde of hokey plot devices. (A big challenge for newcomer, Ximena, though)

I think I know where this one is going, Fab Dam feels sorry for Estercita, loveless marriage to a drunken wife. Her padre has thrown her out I think.

I didn't know about the Crest comm. He sure has the smile for it.

I have no doubt he makes more on the comms than the novela. He'll get residuals every time it's shown.
Good boy, he seems to have problems with property foreclosures.

He did an AT&T comm also, I ran into that one when cking for the Crest comm. He really wants to get into the US market.

Novela Maven, so sorry to hear you had a rotten day! Sure couldn't tell from your recap. I know what you mean about writing recaps being therapeutic.

Anyhoo, I decided to give myself a treat and re-read your recap. I highly recommend this because there are so many NM gems in it.

How could I have failed to notice "[Let's hope he gets some heroics under his belt before this is all over.]"? Oh my! I totally missed that adorable double entendre.

I'm thrilled that The Storm Cellar™ is now open for business. I was going to suggest PFDs until I read the comment about the cork shoes. I would definitely approve Marina's cork shoes as a suitable substitute for any USCG approved lifejacket.

NM, your crack about "under his belt" reminded me there seems to be a dearth of manly belt buckles in this one. Hmmm...are they only for the ranch?

Mauricio, this was my favorite episode too.

I think my favorite WL commercial so far is the Pepsi Next where he's wearing an incredibly fake-looking Tom Selleck moustache (yeah yeah, I know it's called The Chevron). He just looks so '70s and smarmy.

Novela Maven...I wouldn't wish a no good very bad Judith Viorst day on anyone, but heck, if you can rip off an outrageously funny recap as therapy, then what am I to do?

But as a long-time NM fan, I know you write like gangbusters no matter what else is going on.

So listen up Universe! No more bad days for our gal NM. Just keep her computer plugged in and her wit on fire and we'll all be just fine.

Thanks, Sylvia. You are a peach.

About those belt buckles -- wouldn't you sink like a stone wearing one of those babies?

Speaking of belt buckles, am I imagining it or do I see Sergio Reynoso's name flying by in the credits? Have we ever seen him without a giant belt buckle?

Pepsi Next has its appeal but WL romancing the M&M lady cracks me up every single time I see it.

Loved the keep your chocolates on ice people line NM - thanks so much!

Bless your heart, JudyB. From your keyboard to ... well. Thank you!

Thanks Audrey. And I'm not exaggerating about the chocolates. [Well okay. I am. But just a little]
:)

yeah Adriana Noel! like NM said, "prioritize!"

this sealed the deal for me at 08:37
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CVQ--8lU9jE

Que que que?!?! Don Gagorio is in this one? How did I miss that? I don't believe I have ever seen him without a belt buckle, but admittedly I never looked closely, er, down there. Oh boy, this one is getting better and better.

So sorry you had such a bad day, NovelaMaven. Remarkable that you came up with that brilliant, witty, and absolutely thorough recap! Thank you again.

And I agree with you that Little E may indeed outshine our protaganista. Laura Carmine is so great at portraying these on-the-edge characters. I can't imagine another actress playing this role as well as she.

Thanks so much, Marta in NY.

Loved the video, Shallowgal -- gracias!

yes, Sylvia, don Gagorio! [As Sara would say -- squee!!!]

I'm gonna say that Estercita is the missing twin and here is why: Her dad is in the biz of selling women, so maybe he and the wife could not have kids (hence the reason she's an only child) and they bought Estercita as a baby. I'm going to bet .01 on this, lol

And another reason to bet is that they're both in love with the same hunkalicious man. Perfect for High Drama.

NovelaMaven: Great recap with so many lines to quote . . .I don't know Spanish so i rely on this yaaaaaay!!!!

Looking forward to next caputullo . Wow it is great to see familuar characters again i.e WL,Daniela Romo;Laura Carmine and Cesar Evora!!!!!!What a TN

Oh my goodness! Thank you for making me laugh and smile hard! One of my favorite lines: "They listen to him because, for all their macho posturing, their drinking, their whoring, their fighting, they are all good Catholic boys." I nearly dropped the laptop on that one! OK, I really don't like that Esthercita falsely accused Capt. Fabre of rape but, she really went all out on the confession. Kudos, to Marina for coming to his defense.

Someone mentioned the B plot, and I have to agree. I am not sure I am overly interested in L and J at this point, will see how that evolves. Kinda feel Laz needs to man up a lil.

I like CE but, the slapping around of wife and daughter is not working for me. Of course, he is a terrible guy that Fulg.

Thank you and a excellent recap!

How is it that I have only seen the M&M and the Pepsi commercial!?? I just saw the Pepsi one the other day. I had no idea he was in all of those. :)

Thanks for a great recap. Ya'll help so much getting me oriented at the beginnings of the various teles. I wasn't sure about the premise for this one, but I'm getting into it. GRACIAS

Shallowgal, you're maybe right and I do need to prioritize.
Long hair has never been my thing, I guess that's why I'm having such a hard time with this. Ah, well, I'll suffer through it like a big girl.

NovelaMaven - thank you for explaining the Storm Cellar bit, I knew what it was, but I didn't think about the play on words.
This tn will be a jewel!

Storm Cellar also brings resonances of a bargain basement, or Filene's Basement, a place at MetaMart where all the best Tempestad related deals can be found.

Anon 12:55:
Filene's Basement -- yes! Exactly! Well played. :)

El Green, Anon 11:25 and Ron O'Gorman -- thanks so much for the nice words.

Adriana, I agree. A jewel. A great big tacky Mejía jewel! jejeje.

Love the title......Ha...!!!!

Good morning and greetings from the patio...no not THE PATIO...my actual patio . The washer is chugging as it swirls our sandy beach togs, the sun is shining, and I am enjoying a quiet, wonderful moment savoring this fun recap. (I had to return from the beach vaca to relax....three little girls 8 months, almost three , and almost six...two dogs ( a giant, ancient golden retriever and a smallish Canadian Duck Toller)...two daughters, one son-in-law, and one hub in one beach cottage ...well, anyway, sitting on the glider on my own patio in my own backyard with my Ipad on my lap reading recaps of Tempestud and Corazon seems like heaven.

NOvelamaven, how do I love thee ?...let me count the ways... (I thought I would thrown a little Browning into the mix. ) loved the new nickname..Ful-of-himself-io is classic...Himself is the greatest villain ever. Dam Fab/Fab Dam was great. Maybe it depends on if we are happy or unhappy with his behavior. Bad Dam could be Dam Fab and good Dam could be Fab Dam.

I have only seen the first episode, so I am anxious to see all the characters I haven't seen yet. I am excited about so many Alborada alumni being together again ..Daniela Roma ( Mercedes/Dona Juana), our old nemesis the cape wearing Gasca , and Monica Miguel ( loyal Modesta in Alborada). Which character is Monica playing in this novela ?

Also loved the Eddie Haskell reference...Hello, Mrs. Cleaver, is Wally home , mam ? So many clever thoughts, Novelamaven

I also love the synergy at Caraycaray. One person has a thought ..throws it out...and six other people add their own ideas. What a think tank..such excellent brainstorming.

Drunk Ester will create lots of comments. I especially liked her mermaid dress for the festival in the first episode. can you imagine her in a convent ???

AS for seabirds, I can identify only a few : gulls, pelicans, sandpipers, albatrosses. Speaking of gulls, a flock of them bombarded my daughter's friend after they dropped a stolen sandwich on the sand and she tried to kick it away . Gulls are bold and brassy if you have so much as a morsel of food on the beach. They hover and then will land and walk right onto your beach towel to try to steal it. I am always reminded of poor Tippy Headron in Hitchcock's "The Birds." Gross and scary.

P.s. The police chief in this novela was the corrupt comandante in Alborada.

Oh, and Judyb...a little French..although I studied it for two years in high school and two semesters in college, I was never fluent or even passable. I always just smiled and nodded as Madame Coultiere dressed in her orthopedic shoes and old wool suits regaled us with stories of her student days in Paris . Once I sat grinning in the back row at 8 a.m. , as Madame told us about a sad divorce. Anyhoo, I did actually understand the " I regret nothing " quote. So satisfying. *****Susanlynn, the Indolent

Susanlynn, good morning. Sounds like you had a busy but fun beach vacation. All the better to enjoy one's private patio.

Moniga Miguel plays Dam Fab's psychic madrina. Estercita's whiny mother is played by Lucero Lander who was Sor Teresa in Alborada, and I just notice you've already tagged corrupt policeman Valdivio as Alborada's Higinio. Those are the only other Alborada alum's that I recognize.

Oh, I just remembered another actor from Alborada...the guy who attacked the maid in the first episode played the dreadful Francisco ( I think that was his name) who was Hippolita's nasty stepfather in Alborada.

Novelamaven, so sorry that you had a Judy Viorst terrible, awful day. Hope that things are better today. You brought so many smiles and laughs to us here at caray2 even though you were having an unhappy day.. Thank you, Amiga, and I am sending you good vibrations for better days ahead )))))

Ooh, ooh...I have a product that I think might be a best seller at The Storm Cellar. I always enjoy reading the tee shirts at the stores selling "crap-from-afar "(remember that one from one of the commenters of FELS ?) This year the following quote was very popular and seen on tank tops in almost all the crappy shops ..."Sun's out, guns out ." Hub told me that he heard a woman ask a clerk " What does that mean ?...Where are the guns ?"

Good morning, Cap'n. How are you doing ? I thought of you at the shore when I wandered into one shop devoted to...PIRATES. Lots of shirts and scarves with skulls and crossbones. Well, time to get off my booty and hang hub's shirts up to dry in the sun and the breeze...hopefully the last remnants of sand are gone from his duds.

Susanlynn,

Sandy beaches, babies, dogs, family intimacy in close quarters -- all wonderful things, clearly, but now you deserve a little me time on your Own Private Patio. Enjoy.

You're so right -- the synergy on this blog really is amazing.

As for playing the "Where are they now?" game -TN actor version, I keep thinking of Daniela R as Doña Bernarda in Mejía's Triunfo del Amor where SHE was the villainous baby-snatcher (and Victoria Ruffo got to clutch a rag dog and blubber for "mija"). Daniela's scene here as a young mother sobbing in the rain and dark of night for the daughter who has been taken from her is almost identical to Victoria's in TdA. Sr Mejía does like to quote himself.

WL was the "It Boy" in TdA, although admittedly something of a mama's boy and a fop (he even sported the occasional ascot). In that one, he only had a kayak. Now he gets a big, honkin' fishing boat.

And César Évora was a great and wonderful Wizard of Telenovela Medicine, not an evil meanie.

Thank you for your kind words and good wishes. I appreciate them enormously.

Oh noes...not the dreaded YawnCarlos ascot !!!! I remember the kayak !!!

My strongest memory of Daniela is her wonderfully evil Dona Juana in Alborada with her devoted Modesta by her side.

Ohh, the kayak!!!

I remember watching the first episode of TdA and at the end, when the credits started rolling, I wanted to change the channel, but then I stopped, to gaze at Levy's kayaking skills...you know, in case I ever decide to get into sports.:D

yeah..Sweet William in his kayak...too bad they do not build kayaks for two.

Susanlynn, but they DO build kayaks for two.

Cap'n...You know what....as soon as I sent that comment, I thought to myself.."I'll bet someone is going to tell me that they DO make kayaks built for two. !!!" Is it like a bicycle built for two ??? Could I just slip into the "backseat" and let William ( or Mauricio or Fernando or Big Ed) do the paddling ??? Better yet, maybe one of my telenovios has a yacht..yeah..a yacht..that's the ticket..no paddling necessary by anyone.

Hey Susanlynn, you bet your sweet bippy you could slip into the back seat and let your guapo galan do all the rowing. You can store the kayak on your power boat in case you get bored with sitting around letting him serve you lemonade and need a little exercise.
