Qué Bonito Amor #91 (Mex 129) Tuesday 8/20/13 New Season of Survivor: By the Waters of Babylon

This is Anita reporting in, a last minute substitution.  Apparently CBS and UNI have collaborated for a new season of Survivor.  Stay tuned for the first episode. This is the preview.  Meanwhile, we have a recap to cobble together from all the little snippets we saw.  Bear with me, please.  Here goes (quick and dirty and pretty much from memory).
Ayer
What you saw yesterday, I won’t dwell on mucho, so we can get to the good stuff.  Wendy and Justo have their little father-daughter talk about her fear of OJ and fear for her defenseless little unborn hijo.  Justo mans up and swears he’ll finish off OJ, no matter what the price (even though he just promised Wendy to dedicate his life to his nieto).
Next we see JAntos and Maria exiting the taxi by the side of the road in a deserted, thickly wooded area.  As soon as the taxi departs, guess who drive up, OJ and his henchmen in one car and the other full of the U.S.-Mexican Joint Task Force of Keystone Koppers.  By this time Maria and JA have taken off full speed ahead deep into the woods. (Please, just tighten your beanies for the rest of this.) OJ goes first and apparently knows exactly which way they went.  The USMJTFKK are next and they also know exactly where the two fugitive lovers have gone, but don’t see or hear OJ.
Oh, dear.  JAntos and Maria have been trapped at the edge of a cliff overlooking some angry, churning water. OJ has them in his sights, The USMJTFKK have them covered.  Give UP, we’ve got you.  Maria and Jorge Alfredo look at each other and then look down to see this rushing, swirling white water and sure death.  JA has time to expound to Maria, “Let’s go where no one can judge us.”  With only our love.  One, Two, Three, JUMP. Rats, thinks OJ, he hopes they drown.  Rats, think the Koppers, missed them by a hair.  Jorge Alfredo and Maria disappear into their watery grave.
Hoy
(Some scenes are cut & pasted together as should have been done in the editing room at Televisa and not on CarayCaray.)
At Amalia’s
She’s snuffling that her only reason to live is for her daughters.  Concho appears and gets Amalia all riled up. Concho swears he’s worried about Maria  How dare he even show his face after all the harm he has caused them. He should be ashamed. Concho tries to reason with her that it’s all in the past. Amalia hits him (just figuratively) with the information that it was Elvira that murdered her grandchild.  Concho doesn’t believe it.  Who told her that, anyway?  Amalia answers that it was Mirna.
At Lourdes’ & Elvira’s
Concho is livid.  He confronts Elvira with what he learned about Maria’s accident. Elvira is in denial.
Elivra—I didn’t push her. She fell.
Lourdes—Tell the truth now.
She wants to know who told Concho.
Concho—Mirna
Elvira stomps off blaming her parents for taking Mirna and Maria’s side and never being there for her.  Lourdes admits to being at fault for raising her to be such a spoiled beyotch, but Concho shares the blame as well.  They gave her everything she wanted, but they didn’t give her any values.  Lourdes tries to make Concho see that they have to be together in this situation and leave all the rancor behind.
At JNTR
Mirna is desperately looking for the “key” to her spoils of war.  She’s quite loud about it.  She’s sure Pinchi or Lalo hid it somewhere else.  HaHa, you don’t know it, but the two payasos are right within earshot and listening.  They want to know what she’s looking for. Maybe they ought to tell Concho and Amalia. (P.S. I’m pretty sure she found the key.)  She tries to distract them by getting all sexy up in their faces. It probably would have worked. We’ll never know.  Elvira shows up and tries to throw her out. Mirna doesn’t belong there any more.  HaHa, you don’t know it, but Maria, who owns half the bar, remember, hired her back and Mirna’s on her side now.  Elvira is livid. (I guess it runs in the family.) She takes it out on the poor barkeeps—Get back to work, idiots, she screams.

Back at Amalia’s
The place is the same, Amalia is the same, but the company has changed. Remedios and Prudencia are trying to calm Amalia with some tea. She’s been unable to sleep or rest worrying about Maria. The Comandante knocks at the door.  Amalia is all Where is Mi Hija?  Comandante is forced to tell her the bad news—they went into a river and there is no sign of them. They are probably d. e. a. d.  She faints.
When she comes to, Mancia is there to add to the confusion.  Amalia freaks out, d.e.a.d? No, not Maria. Well, says the Comandante, if she isn’t, she’s definitely a fugitive now. Amalia refuses to believe that.  She’s NOT a delinquente. Remedios and Prudencia accuse the Comandante of not understanding anything about love. Yes he does, he replies, and for love she has gotten herself in a peck of trouble.  Amalia has had enough and tells him to leave.
The ladies tell Amalia not to give up hope.  Before all the saints she asked for hope, but nobody answered.  She wails inconsolably, Ruben SAID Jorge Alfredo would turn her into a fugitive and he was right.

By the Waters of Babylon*
Jorge Alfredo and Maria have washed up on shore.  JA revives first and looks in panic for Maria.  He finds her and tenderly speaks to her and she responds. (Whew)  He thought he’d lost her.  She assures him that he will never lose her.  We are together forever.  Oh, and by the way, where are we, anyway? JA doesn’t know, but it doesn’t matter, we are together and you are now Mi Mujer. (I thought she’d been that for awhile now.) She’s worried about her mother. JA sympathizes but tries to get her to forget about it with a really nice kiss.  They pledge their love and Maria says she is his forever.  Jorge Alfredo tells her that this is a new world for both of them and no one will get in their way.
At Fernando’s
He and Susanito are pacing the apartment.  Fer swears they can’t leave things like this.  Fernando has his suspicions that del Olmo had something to do with the bomb at the bar.
Unnecessary Street Scene
Ana and 7-Mares are walking along, talking about Maria and Jorge Alfredo.  Ana has promised to help 7-Seas; 7-Seas promises not to let her down. >>FF
At Ruben’s Office
Ruben is packing up.  He wants to make himself disappear.  Before he can pull it off, Fer, Susie and now Gonzalo show up, crashing through a protesting secretary. Fer announces that he’s there to collect for what Rube did to Maria and Jorge Alfredo.
Fer—You almost killed them.  Talk, or else.
Rube—It wasn’t me. It was OJ.
Fer—Coward.
Rube—Believe me. (He’s probably peed in his pants already.)
Fer—OJ is your accomplice.
Rube—No, Yes, Well, yes, but not this time. Go after him at his hotel.
Fer—We’ll be baa-ah-ck.
At the Hotel
OJ is on the phone with the Padrino.  He’s gloats to Padrino that Santos is d.e.a.d. and there’s no other link connecting him to the money laundering business.  Whatever it is he hears on the other end of the line scares the bejeezus out of El Orange Face.  No, he screams, you can’t kill me. He hangs up and says, Damn Santos—I’ll have to leave. As he’s getting ready to leave, Fer & Co. show up. They announce that they are here to give him a beating to within an inch of his life, but don’t worry, they aren’t going to touch the face, just his body.  Then they get busy.
Unnecessary Police Office Scene
Derecho is looking at a map with push pins in it. Curtis watches.  He zeros in on the hotel (how, why). He refers to Santos as being d.e.a.d., which means that it ends their marriage obligation. Curtis can’t believe what she hears.  She insists that it is not her fault that Santos is d.e.a.d. Derecho tells her he’s sorry, but a trato is a trato. So, instead, let’s go get OJ.  >>FF
Back By the Waters of Babylon
Jorge Alfredo and Maria are walking, presumably to figure out where they are and how close they are to civilization.  Maria’s tired and they stop to rest.  JA tells her they’ll have to spend the night there.  He volunteers to go get some branches while she rests.  We see JA beginning to build a make-shift shelter. Lots of luck, fella.
Back at Amalia’s
Now it is Justo and Wendy who turn up wanting to know if there is any news. Amalia tells him their hijos are d.e.a.d.  Wendy shrieks, no, he can’t be d.e.a.d, and loses it.  (I think Amalia was skeptical of her display of emotion, but hey, didn’t we just see her go through the same breakdown?) Justo wants to know what the police told her.  She tells him, and that no bodies have been found.  Justo grasps at this for hope they are still alive.
Amalia starts up her blame game theme again to Justo, that if only Fernando had made Maria stay behind…Justo says she’s just fooling herself, Maria had made up her mind to be with him. Amalia looks a little peaked and Justo wonders if she needs a doctor.  No, Amalia is just worried that she needs to pull herself together before the children get home from school.  They don’t know the latest news and she will have to tell them, but how, what to tell them.
She snaps at Justo, she just knew that someday, Jorge Alfredo would lead her daughter to perdition. Justo says he’s not making excuses for Santos, but Maria was not obliged to go with him. She decided.  Amalia avers that it doesn’t seem that Justo is properly broken up over his son’s death. Justo claims it does hurt. She keeps going, Jorge Alfredo PROMISED nothing would happen to Maria. Justo reminds her they fell in love and no matter where one went, the other was sure to go. Amalia doesn’t think it was love. (But, but, Amalia, you even recognized this great love between them, whenever you weren’t against it.) Justo reminds her, again, that love makes us do unexpected things. Amalia has the last word, Love ended up destroying them.
Completely Unnecessary Street Scene
All the kids are in uniform and are obvio on their way home from school, including Jalisquito.  They stop to cheer up Isa by letting Jalisquito sing. After he finishes, they tell Isa not to lose faith, then are anxious to get home to see if Maria and JA are back. (Ok, UA—you got your song, one day late). >>FF
Back at the Hotel
OJ’s bad guys show up and interrupt the beat down.  Then they hear Derecho’s & Curtis’ voices somewhere out in the hall and the Banda members bolt.  OJ is revived and he and his guys duck into an empty room. (Or else it was back into his own room, I was taking notes and missed it.)  The police are approaching.  Unfortunately, Mr. Mexican policeman sadly informs them he doesn’t have a warrant to break in, but that isn’t going to stop Mr. U.S. policeman.
At the Little Grass Shack that Jorge Built
Wow! He’s good, for a car salesman! Survivalist Jorge Alfredo has built them a nice little shelter and they’re ready to move in.  But wait, one more thing. He sweeps Maria into his arms and carries her over the threshold. They’re together, just him and her in their nidito de amor.  There is nothing to separate them, ever.  No, she’s not staying out of any obligation, she loves him some, they love each other. Maria is a bit sad, she misses those she left behind, but guesses they are even now, since he also had to leave loved ones behind. She consoles herself that her mother and sisters won’t suffer from her absence financially, since at least mama has the bar.
They build a fire pit and JA rubs two sticks together and they get a flame. They get a fire going.  Then JA leaves and comes back later with a fish wrapped in a leaf, just like that! Maria finds a perfectly sound clay bowl for water, just like that! Suppertime.  They feel fine. They are sure they can live there happily, surrounded by nature.
Avances – The Garden of Eden is disrupted by snakes, one in human form and the other a venomous viper. (Oh where, oh where is José Miguel Montesinos when you need him.)
*By the Waters of Babylon—If  there’s anyone out there who hasn’t read this short story, I still recommend it, even though we read it in high school back in the late-1950s.  Think Planet of the Apes. It is a post-apocalyptic short story by Stephen Vincent Benét, first published July 31, 1937, in The Saturday Evening Post as "The Place of the Gods".  It was republished in 1943 in The Pocket Book of Science Fiction, and was adapted in 1971 into a one-act play by Brainerd Duffield. Good work, Anita.

BTW, I found By the Waters of Babylon online.

We had to expect that city dude Santos would have the smarts to figure out this level of wilderness survival. I wasn't quite expecting a snake to screw it up but we knew that Maria wouldn't be able to handle this for long (despite how appealing the idea could be to play Eve to an Adam like JA).

There needed to be something that would get them arrested.

Comandante Malo is appropriately named; he completely lacks people skills. He needs to do his homework by watching La Ley y la Orden, at least the first two versions to understand how police deliver bad news to families.

Amalia has no redeeming features anymore. She is grossly insensitive to Don Justo's pain.

Who else thinks she might try to accuse JA of kidnapping Maria? Of course, she'd never get away with that.

With 33 remaining episodes it doesn't sound like Ruben should be going down right now. Unless Giuliano escapes and heals to do even greater evil Ruben is still needed to do something more dastardly before being finished off.

Damn!! I fell asleep again! Can't imagine why! Love the title and opening to this. Will be back after I've viewed the thing. Don't like reading till I've watched it. I'll be Baaaahhhck!

Whoa. 33 more to go. Well, let's see. We still have time for Maria to be mauled by a bear, get another waitress job, sing on a few more buses and fall out of the door and get hurt, and probably leave Santos 6 more times.

Amelia. Oh lordy what a long suffering mother. Her children are going to put her back into a coma. And what the heck with these people always jumping to conclusions. If some one told Amelia that Maria and Santos had jumped into the 8th dimension she would believe it and swoon again.

Actually, I don't mind Amalia swooning; at least that shuts her up.

There is still a lot of time for a kidnapping, an attempted rape, and yet another attempt on Jorge Alfredo's life. He has to save Maria's life one more time and Amalia still won't appreciate him.

They still have to marry off all the single mariachis, too. That means Fernando, the guy who helped him last night on the beat-down, and Oscar. Somebody has to officially adopt El Jalisquito, and we still need to find out about Isabel.

Too funny title and my thoughts exactly. I kept thinking here are JAntos and Maria playing Survivor Mexico with OJ the next to be voted off the island - permanently. Just as back at the beginning we listed all the things Santos could do we can now add, build a shelter, build a fire without matches and catch a fish with no line. Truly a modern day Renaissance Man.

So Amelia has yet another hysterical scene plus one faint and one near faint. The woman is worse than Mancia. I did notice she was back to calling Justo Don and I was actually surprised when she said "Our children are dead". I had thought she would probably scream my nina is dead and it is all the fault of that rat bastard son of yours and oh yeah he's dead too. Somehow I guess she managed to restrain herself for a least a few minutes. She really is insensitive to how much pain Justo has suffered, the loss of his wife, his son, the good name of his family. She continually makes it all about her and she has lost nothing.

So Mirna and Elvirus are busy playing the female version of mine is bigger than yours. I suspect Elvirus will come out on the short end of that one. Mirna is a lot older and has been at it a lot longer.

Concho and Lourdes were really shocked that their precious princessa could stoop so low as to cause Maria to lose her baby. And at least they are partly blaming themselves.

So a real snake slithers into paradise and did I also notice an apple right by it? Maria of course will get bitten, that medal of Pedro's is certainly working overtime, and somehow JAntos gets her someplace for help and the American cop shows up. Oh puleeze in what universe is that ever going to happen. Right Novelaland and I must remember this is entertainment.

Drecho, stupidly promises to marry Curtis for what reason I will never know, but only if they catch Santos. Santos is dead and he immediately tells her no marriage. Nice guy.

It was a late night, but I enjoyed the episode and doing the recap. Today I make fig jam.

Could it have gotten any more ridiculous than two city people thinking they can survive in the wild (well, they can't be too far from a highway).

JA probably bought the fish off a peddler and Maria found the lady who was making pots from the good clay soil near the river and got her to give them one. (In my imagintion.)

I *still* say, better for them to have looked for that nice little cabana on the isla with the old lady to help them. Amalia is still Maria's weak link. At least she recognizes that Maria's income is no longer an obligation on her part to provide for that growing brood.

How did Jalisquito get into an elite grammar school, anyway--not taking anything away from him, but it was hard enough for Roddy to get in. The little rascal does clean up well. I hardly recognized him.

As Urban commented: There is still a lot of time for a kidnapping, an attempted rape, and yet another attempt on Jorge Alfredo's life. He has to save Maria's life one more time and Amalia still won't appreciate him.

Golawah, you, too: We still have time for Maria to be mauled by a bear, get another waitress job, sing on a few more buses and fall out of the door and get hurt, and probably leave Santos 6 more times.

Good one. And here's hoping the kids will put Amalia back in a coma. UA and I would appreciate that!

I don't think the street scene between Ana and 7 Seas was a waste. She had actually talked him into going to AA. He was nervous but she is still on her mission to dry him out and I kept waiting for a PSA on the subject.

Beats me how Jalisquito got into school and who paid for his uniform. And wasn't Paloma expelled for her latest fight with Vainessa. I don't recall any recent scene of Amelia going and begging like she did the first time. I guess nothing ever came of
Vainessa accusing Roddy of forcing himself on her and we haven't seen anything of her since her picture lie was exposed. Just a bunch of red herrings I guess.

There is an awful lot of ground to cover with 30 plus to go but I'm not feeling a kidnapping or rape attempt (which mercifully except for the Braulio attempt has not been a big feature of this story). I can see another attempt of JAntos life since OJ is on a rampage now trying to save his own skin and Ruben is tipping closer to the edge every day. I'm also waiting for Elvirus to get what is coming to her and not being sent for a time out by Concho and Lourdes. The body count is still low for a TN so I'm looking for at least one or two more.

Thanks for the recap. Another day, another Amalia meltdown.

Sorry but even in the TN world I don't believe that "love is all that matters so who cares if we are dirt poor and have to live in the wild". Looks like it won't last long though.

I wonder how the other crazy lovebirds (meaning Derecho and Curtis) are going to find JA and Maria and I wonder how JA is going to get Maria to a hospital after the snake bite.

How Derecho will find them is up to the Novelaland Gods because it certainly won't make sense. I've been going nuts trying to figure out 1) how they took a cab ride out to the sticks in what seem only minutes, 2) what river they jumped in. There are 70 in the DF all underground and in the sewer system. 3) where there is a wilderness area that apparently can be reached floating down some river. I know there are wilderness type areas 60 or so miles outside of the DF but how Maria and JAntos found one is beyond even my wild imagination to concoct.

VERY OT: While making my fig jam, I listened to Fresh Air on NPR. The guest for almost 45 min. was....Demien Bichir, starring most recently in The Bridge (FX at 10 pm on Wednesdays). He's been a very busy man. And he's entertaining, too. I don't know when it will show up on Fresh Air's web site, but check him out.

Anita

Been watching The Bridge and really enjoy it. He is such a pro. A really interesting and timely show.

Decie Girl: My guess is that any combo of Ruben, OJ, and Elvira will kick the bucket. Maybe even all 3. I am thinking something is going to have to happen to Concho if it is meant to be that Maria and fam. gain full ownership of JNTR. Anything is possible in Novelaland. Viewerville will have to wait and see.

Decie--Only you and Pancho (lately from PEAM) would worry about geography, distance and timing. But thank you for pointing out the impossible. Doesn't it take about 30 min. just to get to the periferico from the heart of JNTR in normal midnight traffic?
