Qué Bonito Amor #90 (Mex 128) Monday 8/19/13 The Great Escape

JNTR:  Amalia bitchslaps Elvira over what she did to Maria.  At her pretentious reaction, Amalia tells her that what goes around comes around.   The cops head for the paso de gato. The explosion happens and a fire begins. Both Maria and Jorge Alfredo are unconscious. Amalia panics and insists on going upstairs. The Mexican cops start trying to force the door. Fernando and Susanito go upstairs. Giuliano gloats as his two accomplices ask for their pay. Rubén suggests that they all leave. The SWAT cops don't allow them to leave the area. Susanito returns to tell the other good folk that the explosion was in Maria's dressing room. Amalia freaks, Elvira gloats in the corner, Rubén looks edgy. Fernando yells through the door while trying to dislodge it with the fire extinguisher. The flames grow. Meanwhile Elvira has the gall to gloat at Amalia saying that there is always payback. Mirna is about to go after her but is prevented from doing so. Remedios tells Elvira off, however, saying that it is a pity that someone so pretty could have a soul so black. Giuliano enters, gloating quietly, not realizing that Justo and Wendy are behind him. Justo demands to know what he is doing there.  Amalia tries to comfort her younger daughters.

Meanwhile upstairs Jorge Alfredo regains consciousness as the blanket covering him catches fire. He removes it quickly and turns to Maria as Fernando shouts through the door. Jorge Alfredo starts coughing. The Mexican cop tries to get Fernando to leave and they finally pull him away from the door. Derecho shoots the lock off [Couldn't that fool smell the fire and realize this would be a huge risk?] and he and Curtis enter the room just as Jorge Alfredo and Maria are about to exit through the hole blown into the side of the building. [Momentito, but isn't the dressing room on the second floor?] Derecho manages to grab Maria's hand but is hit by a falling beam, allowing Jorge Alfredo and Maria to escape. Did no one think to call the fire department?

In the club, Justo comments that evil never dies but Giuliano is unflappable. Even when Wendy finally calls him out on his evil, realizing that he was the one who had sent the death threat.
Justo calls him a killer to his face, then releases his lapels when he hears Amalia cry out. He goes to her, pushing Wendy ahead of him. Giuliano spits after them [so much for calling himself a gentleman], then suggests to his henchmen that they leave. However, he doesn't escape from Rubén, who stops him by saying they have unfinished business. Giuliano thanks him for his help, but Rubén calls him a coward and a liar. He threatens him that he will pay for putting Maria at risk. Giuliano doesn't cringe.

Amalia tells Justo they don't know anything yet. He turns to find out only to be stopped by the Mexican cop, who tells him that the lovebirds are believed dead. Amalia begins getting hysterical again until Derecho and Curtis enter, Derecho telling Justo “Your son has more lives than a cat. They escaped.” Elvira looks disappointed as everyone else is relieved, hugging each other and cheering. Mirna gives Elvira a dirty look.

Rubén and Giuliano continue arguing, with Rubén finally saying that all he was supposed to do was to get Jorge Alfredo. This stops Derecho and Curtis in their tracks. They double back from the door, realizing that Giuliano had faked his death to fool them. Their Mexican counterparts are right behind them and they are interested, too. The Mexican detective wants to know more, also about what Rubén was doing at the bodega on the day Fabian Cervantes was murdered. However, Curtis diverts them into continuing to pursue Santos Martinez de la Garza and all the cops leave JNTR. The two killers continue to argue.  Some priorities.

Street: At the sound of a police siren, Jorge Alfredo and Maria stop and he pulls her back from going past a building. The police car leaves, but someone grabs Jorge Alfredo's jacket from behind.

JNTR [Why is nobody eavesdropping on the two killers?]: Rubén tells Giuliano that he was saved by the police this time. They continue to threaten each other. Giuliano reveals to Rubén what we already know about him, that only the $10 million matters and other lives mean nothing to him.

Street: It was Fernando who stopped Jorge Alfredo; all three breathe a sigh of relief. Jorge Alfredo is tired of running and tells Maria he doesn't want to drag her into a fugitive life away from her family and her country. She is willing, however, to do it because she doesn't want to lose him. She only wants to say goodbye to her mother. Fernando hands her his cell phone.

Elvira's Apartment: Elvira tells her parents about what happened (without, of course, admitting her guilt about the waxed floor). Concho freaks at the idea of an explosion, asking if Maria is alright. Elvira says “She's alright; she made a pact with the devil!” Concho takes his hat and as he exits issues a threat about how things are going to be from then on. Elvira cries and Lourdes falls for it. For now.

Mendoza Apartment: Justo knows that Giuliano had something to do with what happened at the bar. As we predicted earlier, Amalia is singing her old song once again. Justo is managing not to slap her flat for her hateful words. He tells her he will do everything he can if Maria is arrested and la estupida de Amalia tells him she doesn't want him to. [Paloma and Isabel should disown her immediately.] Wendy shocks us by telling Amalia that everything will be alright. Amalia's prayer to the Virgencita for a signal that Maria is alright is answered by the ringing phone that she is afraid to answer.

Street: Giuliano tells his henchmen they have to find Santos before the police do. Santos is very smart but nothing is too difficult. [He will live to regret that one.] Meanwhile in the police car there is more nonsense from Curtis about trapping Santos and the consequences of not doing so.  The Mexican cops appear amused at her unprofessional behavior.

Mendoza Apartment / Street: Paloma had the courage to answer and is relieved to hear Maria saying she is alright. She puts Amalia on the phone; Amalia tries the guilt trip again but it doesn't work this time. Maria points out that she will go to the end of the earth with Jorge Alfredo if necessary and asks for her blessing. Amalia hesitates and Maria guilts her back with “You will deny that to me?” and wins this battle. Jorge Alfredo meantime tells Fernando he will have to run without Maria so she won't be regarded as an accomplice. Fernando tells him “We're not accomplices to a wealthy criminal named Santos Martinez de la Garza; we're friends of a poor mariachi named Jorge Alfredo Vargas.” Some awkwardness, then Maria returns the cell phone. Jorge Alfredo kisses her, then tells her he must leave without her. He tells Fernando to take care of her as he starts to back away.

Amalia is true to form the same as before, yelling this time at Justo that Maria's life went to hell when she met his son, etc. She is sufficiently declassé to have this argument in front of their children. Wendy looks like she's about to revert to her true self as she listens to every nasty word.

Jorge Alfredo departs and Fernando holds Maria back. She gets on Fernando's case for this, telling him he is to let her go or forget her friendship. He finally caves.

Mirna's Apartment: She declares war on Elvira. “We'll see who has the toughest claws” or something of that nature.

Elvira's Apartment: Similar. She blames Mirna for putting her at odds with her parents.

Street: Maria catches up with Jorge Alfredo, Curtis spots them, and the police car starts catching up with them.

Mendoza Apartment: Amalia lets Justo have it, saying that Jorge Alfredo had no right making Maria love him when he was running from the police. Justo looks like he wishes he could shut her mouth permanently, finally saying “El corazón no se manda” and that Santos' love for Maria is real. Wendy tries to tell him that Amalia is right and that Santos isn't free to love. Paloma, Roddy, and Isabel each speak up in Jorge Alfredo's favor.

Street: Maria and Jorge Alfredo get into a cab but the driver suspects something and refuses to move. Finally Jorge Alfredo tells him they're eloping and he drives off.

Mendoza Apartment: Fernando arrives and tells them that Maria left with Jorge Alfredo.

Street: The cab is being followed but by Giuliano, who begins shooting at them [from the back seat, no less].

Mendoza Apartment: Amalia demands to know why Fernando allowed this. He explains what happened.

Street: The police have joined the chase.

Mendoza Apartment: Amalia demands that Fernando leave; she never wants to see him again. He exchanges a knowing look with Justo before he leaves. Amalia tells Justo and Wendy to leave her alone with her daughters. The three kneel and pray. The Virgencita must be tired of her by now.

Street: The chase continues as Derecho has the insane idea that the other car contains Santos' accomplices.

Fernando's Apartment: He gets milk and cookies for Roddy and Jalisquito, who are still confused by what's happening.  Roddy is still upset about his parents as well.

Street: The chase appears to be exiting the city proper.

Fernando's Apartment: Fernando tries explaining to them.

Street: The chase continues.

Hotel: Wendy is worried that Giuliano knows where she is; she fears for the baby. Justo tells her he will confront Giuliano whatever the cost. [I don't like the sound of that.]

Street: The cab stops; Jorge Alfredo and Maria get out and run into some woods. Unfortunately, Giuliano and his thugs are right behind them. Maria trips and falls, just enough for them to catch up, we're sure. Giuliano looks around , not knowing where he is. The police stop right behind Giuliano's car and follow. Jorge Alfredo and Maria keep going until they hit... the river. They look down and wonder what to do next. The police close in with pistols aimed. Jorge Alfredo and Maria kiss, Giuliano swears that Derecho won't capture him, pulls his gun out and aims. Jorge Alfredo and Maria jump into the river.

Avances

The Mexican cop brings Amalia the bad news, Fernando gets tough with the villains.

Another case of police ineptitude. You'd think they'd want to catch the killers first.

Thanks, Urban, for the rundown on the latest hijinks among the Keystone cops and their suspects. I liked seeing Justo confront Giuliano.
Much as I like Angélica María, she is just driving me freaking nuts. I try to blame the writers for her persistently soggy persona, but I hate to see her whining AGAIN.

Rant, rant, rant. This was the poorest excuse for a Great Escape I've ever seen. Thank goodness it was in good hands for the recap. I'll finish my rant tomorrow. Urban--my sympathies are with you tonight.

UrbanA: I fell asleep half way through the show last night and will have to watch the other half before I comment. Back after the hubby leaves for work.

La Paloma, one would think that a veteran like Angelica Maria would object to this see-saw mind of her character, saying that the inconsistency is unrealistic. And that the writers would take her seriously.

Trivia about her:

-- She is half German.
-- When barely a teen she portrayed
the title character in the Mexican version of The Bad Seed.
-- She will be 69 years old next month.

Pablo Montero's birthday is this Friday; he will be 39.

Anita, the biggest disappointment for me with last night's episode was the lack of music.

I expected Amalia to rant against Jorge Alfredo again. It really blows my mind that she prides herself on intelligence and fails to see that a man like JA can't be guilty of these crimes when her own children see what a near-perfect man he is. His only real flaw is his hair-trigger temper when someone threatens his relationship with Maria; he is completely confident in everything else.

We all know what her real objection is and last night Maria seemed to have figured it out.

UrbanA: Another great rundown of a not so great escape. Je-je-je. Some favs from you~~~

"The Mexican cops appear amused at her unprofessional behavior." (And I keep wondering why I am not!)

"Wendy looks like she's about to revert to her true self" (I kept wondering where I stopped paying attention and when she stopped complaining about barrio cooties!)

"The three kneel and pray. The Virgencita must be tired of her by now." (¡Guajela! I know I sure am! I don't see how Justo in his right mind would ever hook up with her now that he knows what she's really like.)

============
La Paloma: Lordy! An' ain' it da truth! Can't somebody find a rag, shove it in her pie howl and tell her to stuff it?

Jardinera, your point about the Mexican cops makes me wonder how many women are on the police force in Mexico. I can't believe that their police forces are only male.

Wendy should hide out in Paris so she's out of everyone's hair.

We will have to endure more hysterics from Amalia tonight. [eyeroll]

Thank you, Urban! LOVED the aside about the poor Virgen being tired of Amalia by now. Lord knows the rest of us sure are.

Interesting about Angelica Maria playing "The Bad Seed". I've seen it on TCM and found the child actor playing the lead role to be absolutely amazing.

Even more interesting that Angelica Maria is 69. She sure doesn't have the face of a 69 year old.

Fatima

One more factoid about Angelica Maria she was born in New Orleans.

To continue Justo certainly did look like he wanted to clock her with her vicious words. Her rudeness is unforgivable as was having that entire meltdown in front of the children. Such a fine example - NOT. Every one of us saw that she would flip again. I actually thought I heard Justo tell her he knew she hated his son but i might have dreamt it. I think Wendy and anyone here who worried about a possible walk into the sunset between Justo and Amelia can forget that one after last night.

Can't believe the ineptitude of the cops. There is an explosion, they finally get into the room and see there is a fire but does anyone all the fire department — of course not. That goes for the whole crowd upstairs or downstairs whatever. They had a whole SWAT squad they could have ordered to breakdown the door but that didn't happen either. Curtis is so anxious to marry Derecho that ll she cares about is getting Santos and the heck with ll the killers running around. Unprofessional is too good a word for her behavior.

Oh puleeze in the DF at night probably before midnight there is not a car on the street, just two cabs one with an idiot shooting a gun and a couple of police cars and what the hell river is that supposed to be. So we get the Butch and Sundance Kid leap of faith. The bad part of that is there will be another chance for a screaming scene with Amelia.

I've said all along Amelia only wants a world with her and her daughters. Notice how she ordered everyone out including the hapless Roddy so she and her girls could bombard the poor Virgin with more cries to save Maria while Amelia probably hopes someone offs JAntos.

Three cheers to all the kids who stood up to Amelia defending him when she was badmouthing the worthless Santos.

Instead of another rant, I just decided to pull my beanie on tighter and go to bed for a week (like Griselda in Marido).

The Great Escape--I wish they had made it back to the Field of Flowers on that island where they found the hut. The lady was nice to them and would harbor them until they decide what to do and she would get a message to Amalia and Justo.

I'm glad Maria stayed with Jorge Alfredo. Their destiny is to be together in life and for all eternity. Looking down at that rushing water, it looks to them as if it will be for all eternity. So glad we know they survive (or have to according to tn laws).

Poor Wendy. She's trying hard not to be judgmental. But it's in her nature to be so. At least she and Justo had a brief conversation when she explained that she would give her life to protect her baby, Justo said that now you know what it means and that is what your mother and I tried to do. Now that she isn't here, I'm left and will dedicate my life to my children. (I guess that's an apology for putting career infront of family, or something.)

As long as Mirna and Elvira are keeping each other busy with vengeance, they'll stay out of the Mendoza's lives (ya think?).

Isn't it about time for Coloso to come back? For him a lot has happened, but the most devastating news is that "mi chiquita" is missing and presumed dead and it's all the Pochito's fault. HoHum, rewind.

You called it Urban, or Decie or whoever or both, that Amalia was going to switch back to blaming JA for ever setting eyes on her daughter. She was especially grating last night.

So funny about the Virgen being tired of her.

The best thing about those previews for tonight is Fernando going off and knocking that annoying smirk off OJ's face. Been waiting for that almost as long as Elvirus getting whacked by Maria.

I keep trying to erase from my mind that scene in the polie car with Curtis getting all over Derecho. Sometimes there are scenes in TV shows that are absolutely cringe worthy and that one was one of them.

UA - Muchas gracias. A beautifully written recap. I tuned in midway through, saw Amalia screaming and couldn't take it. My favorite line: "Justo is managing not to slap her flat for her hateful words."

I have a question right now: Where does El Jalisquito live?

Until Santos and Maria get back and all is well Roddy will have to stay with Fernando. Maybe El Jalisquito will live with them? He needs a family and we still don't know his backstory. I want to see someone adopt him.

Roddy would be better off with Santos and Maria than with his own father unless Oscar grows up between now and the end of the story.

As for the end of the story, I dearly hope that when Maria and Santos / Jorge Alfredo marry, they don't let Amalia live with them. They'd end up in divorce court within a year.

I think, UA, Maria has seen the light. If it's up to either of them, Amalia moving in isn't going to happen unless she's had a stroke.

Paloma and Isa still need to reach majority and maybe of the three, Isa will be the one to take care of dear mommy. Paloma and her mother have already had some run ins. Isa only needs to work on her math to be perfect in her mother's eyes.

I hate the idea of any of those girls ending up like Tita.

It's anybody's guess where Jalisquito lives, somewhere on the street is my guess. We know when he was introduced some guy was making him earn money selling gum and the kid seemed to say he had no parents. My guess is that Fernando and Ana will adopt him in the end.

Correct me if I'm wrong but I would have sworn I heard Amelia trying to guilt Maria into coming back with the old you don't love your mother routine. I think Maria has made her choice as an adult and Amelia needs to get over it. We don't know Isa's whole story either and if she was legally adopted after Amelia found her. Amelia doesn't seem to have the ssme iron grip on Paloma and Isa so they might have an easier time of it than Maria who according to her smother gave up her youth to help take care of the family. She also no longer has that excuse.

Thanks for the recap. So the episode once again ended with the lives of JA and Maria hanging in the balance. I'm shocked they got out unscathed from the explosion. Totally unrealistic.

Once again Amalia has to blame JA for everything. She's getting on my last nerves. I empathized with Justo and Wendy. They had to endure the "scolding" from her.

You are correct. Amalia did try to pull the "don't you love your mother" card. Come on Amalia,
Maria's love for JA is strong through the good and the bad.

I wonder who will win the Elvira vs Mirna war. It looks to me as though the villains are turning on each other.
--TF

Amalia: "So, your (romantic) love counts more than a mother's love?" Umm - YEAH!

Thinking about that tongue lashing Amelia was dishing out to Wendy and Justo I couldn't help thinking how much fun it would have been if after she said JAntos had no business falling in love with Maria since he was a fugitive, if Wendy had spoken up and said none of this would have happened if your little girl hadn't been chasing after my brother for his money. That of course isn't true but it might have shut up the shrew.

Oh and I may have missed it but I think during her tirade Amelia called Justo, Justo and didn't include the polite Don Justo. Somehow she always remembers to do it to the snake Ruben.

There was a time when Amalia faced the same crap she is now dishing out to Maria. She is in no position to criticize Maria for her choice since she made the same one years ago.

I know I've said it before, but it bears repeating: Amalia wants Santos to be guilty. She hates the idea of Maria being happy with a man, especially one who could raise her social status. She needs a swift kick in the direction of a psychiatrist's office.

Anonymous, you are right. She never forgets to address del Olmo as "Don Ruben." That is getting on my last nerve and will have me raving mad if she continues to do it after Fernando brings any proof that he's behind any of what's going on.

URBAN I'm pretty sure Amelia left off the Don when addressing Justo during her rant last night. He was furious at what she was saying and her leaving it out was just another indication of her rudeness. He held his tongue being a diplomat and recognizing that those poor traumatized children didn't need two adult sling insults at each other.

I am in agreement with you that Amelia has to have JAntos guilty. She can't afford to admit that he is innocent. She refuses to see what everyone else does, how well he treats Maria, how kind he is to the girls, to Roddy and even Jalisquito, how much help he has given the family. She even ignores that he cleared Pedro's name. Amelia's problem is that her entire identity is tied up in being a mother. Her image of that is having her three little chicks as close as possible. JAntos represents an enormous threat to that image, he has the power to take Maria away from her spiritually, emotionally and psychically even though he specifically told her he would stay in Mexico. With Coloso she could be sure he would stay in the barrio and Maria would be close and still under her thumb, with JAntos and his money Maria might be moving into a better lifestyle and leaving her behind.

Amelia refuses to let go of the past, she is in her comfort zone with her chicks close by and all her memories. Even now that the family financial picture has changed for the better is she looking for a bigger place in a better part of town — no she is just sitting and fretting and kind of trying to put the toothpaste back in the tube.

Great point.

I hope the bar was insured. Maria deserves some serious compensation after however many years of underpaid work and Elvira's trap. Which I somehow think Concho still doesn't know about.
