Corazón Indomable Fri 8/16 Watch Out For That First Step!

¡Que casualidad! Today is Raiza's birthday and Lucía is in town...what could possibly go wrong?

We join Raiza and Miguel at the casino bar,

"I owe you a great deal, Raiza, and although you won't believe it, you have been helping me spiritually."
Let's Get Outta Here Before My Crazy Wife Shows Up
Hold it right there, buster, she has helped you on your way to financial ruin,  addiction to gambling and alcohol dependency, as well as abandonment of your family and farm... OK, we realize that there has been some fast and loose editing, but are you going to tell us that she's also been taking you to church, AA and Gamblers Anonymous meetings and that has all been left on the cutting room floor?

Before he can enlighten us about his spiritual development she proposes a toast and although he's been sipping brandy out of a snifter, he begs off. See, his wife has a keen sense of smell (actually, crazy people do, they can smell things that aren't even there). She becomes maudlin and confesses that even though it's her birthday, she's all alone. Much like us, he doesn't want to descend into her self pity, so he decides to complete that toast and gulps down some of that brandy.

What can I say? The crazy lady, Lucía, looks great in that scarlet gown. She's impressed with the casino... lots of elegant ladies. Octavio agrees and tells her that they love the gambling (even more than the men do), and as Maricruz spies around the corner, he nervously goes to seek out his brother.
When Octavio departs, Maricruz, wearing a well-fitted black and brown gown, slinks out of hiding and approaches her cuñada, much as a lioness stalks her prey.
Welcome To My Web You Pretty Little Fly

"Buenas noches, Señora Lucia."

Lucía  trembles slightly and is that a hint of fear (recognition?) reflected in those beautiful blue eyes? Difficult to tell with all that makeup.

Raiza is in a funk. She looks kinda great in a grey gown with black straps but with an unfortunate bulge here and there. Maybe it's just one size too small or perhaps she's retaining fluid... she's looked better. She whines to Miguel about the life she has chosen. He burbles that they are both destiny's toys and that liquor is the way to deal with the pains of love. She counters that love doesn't even exist but he reassures her that it does but that hate is stronger than love.

Does anyone understand... or much less care what these two are talking about?"
"Happy birthday!"

But not for long as Octavio is poised to join them.

Maricruz connects with Lucía. lucía mentions that Miguel had requested the evening off but MA had refused permission.

"Men lie," Maricruz responds.

Lucía wants to see Miguel. María A tells her that he's celebrating the birthday of a friend, one of the casino girls, and of course they are drinking but she agrees to take her to him.

Octavio, anticipating an unhappy reunion hustles to rescue Miguel from Raiza and the bar. Miguel resists and minor scuffle ensues.

Where's security?

At her place, an admittedly jealous Doris (looking slim and sleek in a low cut lavender gown) is in a snit as she complains to Mariana that Miguel should be escorting Lucía to the casino instead of Octavio. By the way, Mariana is looking pretty good herself n a long airy camo-patterned gown (more attractive than it sounds). She tries to reassure Doris.
No, You're Not As Pretty As The Casino Lady But You Have A Wacky Charm
The scuffle persists...

Where's security?

With Raiza looking on, María A escorts lucia down those ubiquitous casino stairs.

"There you have it, Lucía. There's your flaming (flamante... my choice of available translations) husband."

Looks as though we're at Rancho Beige where Ester pleads with Lady Beige (Simona) to employ her hunk, José Antonio, and she gives her a few details of his qualifications and how their relationship developed. Simona seems dubious but not disapproving.
And Then José Antonio Did WHAT?
We are apparently going to have to accept the fact, far-fetched as it might be, that Ester has fallen hard for this uneducated country bumpkin and wants to settle down with him in this rural setting to raise a passel of barefoot kids.

Back at the casino things are getting ugly...

Where's security?

Lucía is humiliated as  MA castigates Miguel for drinking on the job and cavorting with one of the female employees. Lucía responds with a sound slap to her husband's face. Octavio complains that Miguel should have been given some time off to spend with his visiting wife and child, but a very unseemly and unsympathetic Maricruz  flat out lies that Miguel preferred to be in the casino celebrating Raiza's  birthday instead. Raiza heads for the stairs, shrugs her shoulders,
Excuse Me, It's Time To Floss The Cat
"Good night."

Lots of facial closeups.

Simona asks Ester when she and José Antonio are getting married. Ester explains that JA is afraid that she will abandon him like Octavio abandoned Maricruz. Simona explains that Octavio simply went off to work so he could provide for Maricruz.  Ester says that nevertheless, JA hasn't forgiven Octavio for going off and leaving Maricruz behind.

Back in his room Miguel quarrels with Lucía. Basically, she thinks they can work things out together. He does not. They are victims of destiny. Next!

In the governor's mansion Doris quarrels with her dad.

On the boat, Raiza collects her commission. She asks Maricruz why she hates these people. Maricruz shares only bits and pieces of her unhappy past with Raiza... in sepia flashbacks.

Back in Miguel's room Luísa is trying to come up with ways to hold their marriage and life together. She pleads to sell the ranch, move far away and assume a simple life. Nopis. He orders her to leave.

Doris has a simple request for her dad,

"Throw that woman off the island."

A simple request and a simple plan.

Lucia has reduced her pleadings to a simple request and a simple plan as well,

"Me by your side with your son."

She'll even go to work.

Well heck, Miguel is tired and needs to get some sleep.

It suddenly occurs to Lucía what she must do,

"I'm going to talk to Octavio."

Brilliant!

Ester vows that she has changed and wants a simple honest life with JA. Simona reminds her that with children comes responsibilities. Ester knows that. Simona agrees to hire JA. Did anyone doubt that she would?

Lucía thinks that somehow Octavio might save them (don't forget...this lady is crazy). It looks as though Miguel just wants her gone and tells her so.

Now she wants to die.

By all that's Holy... can she just shut up?

True to her word, the next morning she shows up at Octavio's place,

"Octavio, you've got to help me!"

Raiza and Tony puzzle over the strained relationship between la familia Narváez and María A. Raiza has learned that MA feels that Lucia was responsible for, in her own words, destroying her life.

Lucía desperately doesn't want to lose Miguel. She would like to sell the ranch but Octavio informs her that the ranch is not worth all that much these days and is almost certainly cursed because of the fire she had set which caused Ramiro's death resulting in this  punishment from heaven.

"Give up and accept it."

"No, I can't accept it, because I will fight that punishment."

"Really? You'll challenge God?"

"Yes, I challenge Him to punish me with something else, but not take Miguel away from me."

Careful there Crazy Missy. Too late. Even as she speaks little Miguel Jr. (hey, he's learned to walk) is toddling toward a flight of stairs with some lady hot on his heels...

"Careful kid!... Nooo!"

she's too slow...oops. Well now we know that the little fellow hasn't learned to fly.
Forget The Stunt Child... I've Got This
As Octavio tries to reason with Lucia there's a knock at the door, it's the pretty girl from the hotel desk,

"Is la Señora Lucía Narváez here?"

"Yes, here she is."

"What?"

"Your hotel just called with a message about your son."

"What's wrong with my son?"

"He fell down some stairs and was taken to the hospital."

Wow, doesn't word travel fast on the island?

Araceli is sad as Teo arrives and inquires,

"What's wrong, you've been pouting for two days."

"I broke up with Eduardo, Teobaldo."

He can't help it, a crooked smile blooms on that distorted face.

At the hospital Lucía is distraught as Octavio tries to console and encourage her. The Dr. comes in and announces that they're Xraying and checking him over. Lucía wants to be with him but the Dr. tells her that would just slow things down.

"Have a little patience."

Eddy awakens Miguel and gives him the news.

Teo gives Araceli a little pep talk. He'll help her out but she must do everything he says.

"We're going to make you adorable Eduardo jealous."
First We Must Convince Him That You're Boinking Me
Uh oh. This should be fun.

Well Octavio is certainly making Lucia feel better... let's listen in,

"Awhile ago you were challenging God, Remember? There in the hotel room, you requested that you be punished in any other way except losing Miguel."

Yikes! So God has even taken an interest in this TN? That should boost the ratings.

She asks God to forgive her, she was crazy (yes) and blind (not yet).

She asks Octavio to forgive her but he tells her it's Maricruz Olivares who she needs forgiveness from (well, good luck with that).

Miguel is going nuts with guilt and grief. He was supposed to be watching the kid but was drunk and conked out. Eddy tells him that it's partly Lucía's fault for going off to see Octavio. They head out to the hospital.

Octavio pops in on María A in her casino office to ask for a favor.

Miguel joins Lucía at the hospital. Their son has a broken arm and a mild concussion. The Dr. hopes that there's no internal bleeding. She tells Miguel that she promised God that she'd return to the ranch and never leave  if her son is OK. She tells him of her challenge to God, so now if her son is OK she must give up Miguel and he can get on with his life with someone else.
And That's Not The Worst Of It... I Also Broke A Nail

Octavio tells María A about Octavio's son and asks for time off for him and  for a loan to pay the medical bills. He is surprised to learn that she already has a detailed description of the ranch and all of its assets...

A 200 hectare (not quite 500 acres) ranch with cattle and horses, abundant water, several buildings, and a main house with all the utilities, etc, etc, etc.

She explains that he has been borrowing money using the ranch as collateral.

Good news from the Dr. The kid's gonna be OK.

Octavio can't believe that his brother has been borrowing against the ranch. MA assures him that he has and shows him the proof... signed IOUs.

Karim is anxious to head home but the plane isn't quite ready. He hates waiting but while he waits he muses,

"I'll return to my country and I'm going to govern. That woman has given me the biggest lesson of my life, if I don't take advantage of it  it's because I'm a cretin."

He's going to dictate beneficial laws for his people, copying the  best features of democracy without allowing it's vices to contaminate his laws.

Too late.

Mohamed advises him to seek asylum here 'cause he ain't welcome back home.

He confronts Mohamed with a puny little knife.
Ya Call That A Knife?
MA rubs it in a bit. He reminds her that he owns half the ranch. She knows,

"When your brother uses up all his part and arrives at yours, I'll let you know so you can come and back the loan with your signature." (extreme dimple alert!)
I'm Not Wearing Panties
Well, turns out that Karim's daddy'n'law has taken control of his country. Karim gives up the puny knife without a struggle. Mohamed tells him that death awaits Karim back home and that Mohamed himself will be welcomed as a hero.

MA notes that she has investigated and has discovered that the ranch isn't worth all that much and there's not a lot of value left for Miguel to borrow against. Octavio notices that MA is rather happy at the misfortune of his family. She admits that she does derive pleasure from certain people's unhappiness. She dismisses him telling him to tell his brother not to worry, he can take time off and will get the money to pay for his son's medical expenses.

She shuts the door behind him and turns to us to declare,

"You still don't know what awaits you, Octavio, you still don't know."

Yikes! No smile, no dimples, just cold hard eyes.

♫ I have a little list...♫

Vivi promised me a monkey and this is what I get? To whom do I complain about this bait and switch?

Mohamed is still explaining things to the emir. His guards will all return to there country with Mohamed... that is, all but Alí and Ramahad (and we care or need to know this?). Karim calls them traitors but Mohamad tells him that it is he who is the traitor and advises him to hurry up with gaining asylum because he as the new Minister of State will be seeking to bring him home to face charges.

He and the boys turn and leave as we see the lunacy return to the emir's blue eyes... he wails,

"I'm left alone, just now when I was going to do the right thing. It's all that western woman's fault, but I swear, swear that she'll pay for this."

Welcome back you crazy Arab, I was already beginning to miss the old Karim.

María A picks up the phone and learns that the emir was deposed. This will be a game changer but she's happy for his people.

At the hospital, Octavio wants a word in private with Miguel. They leave Lucía alone with Miguelito who has a bruised cheek but looks pretty good, considering... She smiles down at him. I'm touched.
Narváez Boys Need Their Beauty Sleep
"Miguel, that was an unhappy accident. Besides, you know perfectly well that I tried to protect her as much as I could and could not achieve my objective because of you and Lucía."

Miguel admits that he feels bad about that and is ashamed of Lucía. Octavio points out that Miguel has pretty much lost all of his half of the ranch and now will need to borrow more to pay his son's medical bill. A totally defeated Miguel tells him that he no longer cares about the ranch.

Karim is visiting the governor who is sticking by him as a friend and who is offering encouragement and support. He thinks that things will improve, the emir assures him that they will not. The guv changes the subject,

"I've been told that you're no longer going to sell your part of the casino."

"No, your excellency, all of my disgrace was caused by that casino... or better said, by a woman in that casino, a woman who sooner or later will pay."

Octavio is fed up with Miguel. He will help out with the medical bill but nothing else.

"Now go back to your wife because I need to go get some rest after all this bad stuff."

The Narváez boys do need their beauty sleep.

He leaves Miguel wringing his hands.

As things wind down on this episode we return to the governor and the emir,

"Of course you're referring to Señora Mendoza."

Yes, and now he proceeds to blame her for all his problems and announces,

"She has to pay. Already I'm preparing something that will make her bite the dust of defeat. Something to make her never forget me."

In the hospital cafeteria Octavio harangues Miguel for wasting money borrowed against their ranch. Miguel tells him that it's not much different than how Octavio has managed his own life. Octavio argues that he lived freely but didn't drag anyone down with him as Miguel is doing. Miguel reminds him of Maricruz.

Thanks Carlos. I haven't read the recap yet but I just wanted to say first that I can't stand Karim's attitude. It's the same as saying that if a woman dresses provocatively, she's just asking to be raped and deserved it? Ugh!

Fantastic recap for such a complicated and dramatic capítulo! Bravo! I love how you also commented on the fashion parade, as every gown was amazing last night.

I think MA is on thin ice with Octavio now that she has hurt his brother, knowing that she really wants in her heart to win him back. I don´t know how he will forgive her, unless he truly starts to feel guilty for what they all did to her in the past.

I feel bad that I may have disparaged René Strickler's acting yesterday concerning his ll's and y's. In fact, I think he´s wonderful, so natural, he reminds me of Marcello Mastroianni. It is just that a short version of this annoying commercial kept interrupting my viewing

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_FlgYS8SnO8

Also, it´s actually nice when all of the actors represent their home countries in a kind of pan-Latinoism. Even if they come from different parts of the Spanish speaking world, they are still brothers and sisters!

Carlos, you are the king of picture captions. I lol'd over every one.

With MA's glee over the ranch debt, you'd think Oblivio would finally catch on that MA is MC. I think the only way that guy will figure it out is when MA tells him that she's MC. And even then I have my doubts.

I loved the term Rancho Beige. That's perfect description of Simona.

Teo was looking very lumpy with his hump today. Wouldn't Ariceli notice?

Carlos,
a great rundown of the hit and run in this episodio!

A couple of my favorite bits this week:

"...you have been helping me spiritually...Hold it right there, buster, she has helped you on your way to financial ruin, addiction to gambling and alcohol dependency, as well as abandonment of your family and farm...are you going to tell us that she's also been taking you to church, AA and Gamblers Anonymous meetings...?" That went right to the top and off the snarkometer!

"Excuse Me, It's Time To Floss The Cat".... (snicker!)

MA got first blood tonight. I'm wondering how long she can keep it up.

HILARIOUS and spot on.. Carlos, I am always so happy when i see you have written the recap. I do have to comment on Teo's hump. I see it has diminished somewhat and is lumpier than ever. It would seem wardrobe was too busy to reconstruct the hump to its original configuration. Or was it the result of a less than successful surgery? Enough of the hump.

I do love the ladies clothes and look forward to the fashions as well as the story line. I hope we have seen the last of th Emir, that Carola returns and that Riaza has a new evening hair style in the near future.
I am enjoying Karma playing out it's role. Be careful MariA, don't get too caught up in revenge, I may not serve you well.

Again Carlos, muchas gracias.

CathyX, i see you also noticed the somewhat makeshift hump. I don't know why I have zeroed in on that. I started to make a comment on the intimacy between Teo and Arci and the hump, but thought better of involving the word hump in there activities.

Perhaps Teo's plan to make Ed jealous involves Angel. Didn't Teo have a thing for Areceli first?

LOL! LOL! Carlos, what can I say? The monkey was in more promos than the galan was. I was deceived! ;-)

The recap was hilarious, as usual. As were your screen cap titles.

The action really picked up last night, as we knew it would once Lucia came to the island. I couldn't take my eyes off her during her discussion with Miguel in the hotel room. She's crazy, but it's really hard to take your eyes off her. Elizabeth Alvarez is doing a great job with this role, and yes, so is Rene S.

God's punishment came down on her swifter than anything I've read in the Old Testament! Thanks goodness Miguelito will be ok (and that he has a name). Was anyone else a bit surprised by how cold Mari reacted to learning a baby was gravely ill? Wow!

I thought The Hump looked like Teo had borrowed the fake boobs from Pro Ella Soy Eva, and used them as his fake hump. Good thing none of the characters in this are observant.

Raiza IS helping Miguel spiritually. She's helping to rid his attachments to his money, ranch, family, and sobriety. Guru Raiza.

So God got even with Lucia by throwing her kid down the stairs? That's some serious smiting. MC is probably too impressed with this to be worried for the child. She's mentally taking notes.

So much for karem's enlightenment. He needs to spend time with Raiza.

Kelly

Good afternoon everyone. Well, I got to preside over the fire that took Ramiro so why not the little tyke's tumble down the stairs? Thank goodness no children were damaged in the production of this episode.

Thanks cathyx,

here I was thinking that we were done with Karim for good and now he's back big as life looking for his own brand of revenge.

Thanks daniela,

I thought that Miguel really brought it last night. He and Lucía were both very convincing with some very unconvincing lines.

Thanks Jardinera,

I'm so glad that you're still recapping this with us.

Thanks emeraldrose,

I found Teo's hump very distracting last night. I think that cathyx has it right that that Teo's plan involve Ángel getting close to Araceli so my caption was perhaps not so far off the mark.

Thanks Vivi,

I really could have used me some monkey last night.

Thanks Kelly,

yes, Karim's enlightenment was very short-lived. Perhaps Raiza could help guide him spiritually.

Carlos

I need an entire string of superlatives to say how much I enjoyed your recap, Carlos. Every caption also cracked me up, especially Lucia breaking a nail and Raiza flossing the cat.

Wow, was I fooled. I thought we were getting rid of Karim, but now he's back and more obnoxious than ever. With his casino share as his only income, his shame and his anger, he'll be a formidable enemy for MA.

It's good Miguielito only has some injuries. Lucia and Miguel were great in their scenes.

YIKES. Poor Carlos. What a hot mess of an episode you got to recap. I missed this (thank you) because Hub and I actually were enjoying a lovely dinner out at our favorite restaurant....with lovely Whiskey Sours... in a day-late anniversary celebration.

Let me get this straight...Mari is swiftly moving forward with her plan of revenge against Lucrazy and Miguel, but meanwhile Karim has declared revenge against Mari. Where is that monkey when you really need him ?

Carlos, I am amazed and impressed by your clever, funny recap of a very weird episode. I am very uncomfortable that they have dragged into this novela a vengeful God who makes deals with these crazies .

thanks for some giggles. I always appreciate your humorous take on the happenings. i especially enjoyed your repeated plea....."Where's security ?" The recappers are the only things holding me to this novela.

Carlos, thanks for a very entertaining recap especially the screen shots with the captions. I especially enjoyed the "little Miguel Jr. is toddling with some hot lady on his heels" one since I missed that scene and never saw the little legs at the top of the stairs. Very funny!

My favorite scene from last night was when Octavio goes in to ask for time off for his broher and some money to pay the medical bills of Miguel Jr. The look on Octavio's face is priceless when he realizes that Maricruz knows all about the ranch already in terms of collateral.

This was a fun week. I hope they keep up the pace this next week.

Jarifa

Thanks Paloma,

Karim could certainly be even more dangerous than before. He doesn't have the unlimited resources he had before, but now he really has nothing to lose and has two henchmen remaining who are clearly loyal to him.

Thanks Susanlynn,

your anniversary dinner sounds wonderful. A whiskey sour was my very first mixed drink and I still will order one from time to time and always enjoy it.

Yes, weird, this was a very weird episode.

Carlos

....slightly sweet and on the rocks. !!!!!! Sometimes., our favorite bartender Bill makes it yellow,.other times pink. Last night's was pink. I am taking it as a good omen for our year ahead. i've yet to try a Dark and Stormy.

My friend Genevieve prefers a pomegranate martini.

I am finding this novela very depressing...Mari has become obsessed with her revenge plan. Miguel is a drunk. Lucrazia is crazia. Karim is krazy. Oblivio is oblivious ...and pathetic. Raiza is depressed. Doris is....Doris. H.E.L.P.

Thanks Jarifa,

it looked as though little Miguelito actually stepped off those stairs. Earlier in the week a commenter was concerned about the well-being of crying babies. I hope that she (he?... nah) checks in about toddlers hurtling down stairs... yikes! Is CPS watching?

Susanlynn,

you mentioned Doris, well poor Doris looked stunning in that outfit and so did her friend Mariana in her camo gown and they ended up going nowhere. This TN must have an unlimited supply of lovely gowns.

Carlos

Thanks for your recap Carlos. Your recaps are quite fun even the TN itself is mayhem. Your captions continue to amuse me greatly!

Life got the best of me so I missed being able to praise cathyx and La Paloma for this wonderful efforts. Thank you both.

Add me to the list of those a bit vexed with Karim not being gone. Bailey Marie, I know you see him as assuming but when villains are as crazy as Karim, I'm too concerned about him hurting MC or her child to find him funny.

Why do the ads lie! No monkey, no Solita or Tobias. Please bring them back and make Karim and Doris go away.

the actress who plays Mariana looks familiar to me, but I cannot remember which novela she was on.

Thanks Karen,

as I've said, I'm also surprised that Karim is still hanging around. It's like having a party and you're relieved that an annoying guest has finally left only to look up and see that fo some reason he's returned.

At this point, I have no idea where this TN is headed. Who guessed that the emir would still be around? Certainly not I.

Ester and José Antonio? Really?

What's next, Tobias and Simona?

Will we suddenly be presented with an articulate Solita all set to enter medical school?

I still contend that Teo and Ángel are distinct individuals, but that sure doesn't seem to be the direction in which this is going.

And what of Carola?

Will we ever see the monkey again? Vivi, you promised me a monkey!

Carlos

Susanlynn- The Mariana actress played Venus/Lovely in Manana es Para Siempre. She also had a big role in Al Diablo con Los Guapos.

Carlos- I'm going to have faith in what Gringo tells us about Mari eventually remembering her friends and family, and actually spending some time with them (the monkey included). It might not happen till the last few episodes, when Mari finally regains feelings of empathy and sympathy for others, but I'm sure it will happen.

For a long, long time, the people yelled I'm bored---get on with it, get on with the vengeance! The crowd cried out for more and more is what they got Friday night. A couple of big scenes with Miguel and Lucifer--very well acted I must say, a baby falling down the stairs accompanied with a hospital scene. What looked to me like Maricruz getting ready or getting very close to starting her revenge
plan to take over the rancho and a
crazier than ever Emir Karim who looks like he isn't going to be riding off into the sunset to be the good ruler and save his own country and his people. It looks like he has some crazy hateful or revenge plan of his own that he is about to put into action. And that might come with the Governor's help. Mari just might have her hands full starting next Monday night--I
can't wait, but now on to the recap so that I can get a more acurate picture of what is going on for now.
the gringo

Vivi..Thanks for identifying Mariana for me...Lovely/Venus. She was quite an interesting character.

Carlos, thanks for another one of your delightful recaps. Your sly humor is sublime. My favorite:

"Yikes! So God has even taken an interest in this TN? That should boost the ratings."

LOL!

I found Karim amusing to start. Lately, not so much. When MA rallied Karim to return home and do right, I was cheering them both on. Corny and unlikely but very satisfying. Now, so true, it's as if "you're relieved that an annoying guest has finally left only to look up and see that for so97me reason he's returned."

Carlos, "I still contend that Teo and Ángel are distinct individuals"
I hope you're not a betting man.

After the way MA has acted with Octavio the last two times they have been together, I will be interested in seeing if he still finds her desirable. She is still gorgeous but has shown a very ugly side of herself to him. Will he react or will he be oblivious? Should I even wonder?

Re: flossing the cat. I knew a lady whose kitty would jump up on the bathroom vanity every morning. While her "mom" would hold the dental floss for her, Pumpkin would carefully clean her teeth on the floss for a minute or so. I kid you not. If we can't have Moctavio, could we a least have a cat for Raiza? Then she won't be so alone.

Barbara

Barbara- ITA. If a guy I liked reacted so coldly to hearing that my nephew was hospitalized, that would be it for me. But I'm sure Tav's "love" for Mari is so great that this will go right over his oblivious head.

I think those bills Mari is lining her pockets with will keep Raiza plenty warm at night. Maybe she'll soon be able to afford to leave Isla Dorada and the moniker "woman of the casino" behind. Men in the CI universe seem to respect "women of leisure" more than "women of the casino", so she would be able to finally find a man.

Ah, Carlos - another delicious recap to spice up my Saturday! Loved it, thanks!

Add me to the list that thinks René Strickler delivered an outstanding performance last night. His characterization of worthless weak-willed Miguel is so convincing. Kudos!

Daniel Arenas is also playing Oblivious very well - convincingly oblivious. Understated, totally, but that is clearly what the director is requiring. On Wednesday's recap - which I went back to watch since it looked like a doozy from the recap, thanks Cathyx - Oct had an hilarious expression on his face when he realized Doris had just entered the lobby. This really reminded me of Willy from Amorcito Corazón. I miss Willy!!!! Arenas was fantastic as Willy. Too bad when he has to play boring galáns.

So Karim's "come to God" moment of sanity lasted for about a second. Surprise - NOT! As much as I adore Carlos de la Mota, I'm sick of Karim.

Thanks so much to all the recappers who kept us updated while we were traveling!!!

Audrey (& John)

P.S. John really liked your caption for the dimple moment, LOL!

gringo,

it was an eventful entertaining episode. I hope the recap amuses and entertains you as well.

Thanks Barbara,

"...sublime..."? Wow, I'll take it. I rally don't have a lot of confidence in my theory about Teo/Ángel, but why go to all that trouble (not to mention pain) and then spend so much time and effort trying to maintain the old look and persona?

Thanks Audrey,

Miguel really did put it all out there last night. What a contrast there was between the apparently happy Miguel toasting Raiza's birthday and then late in the episode suffering such pain and guilt. It reminded me of the movie Days of Wine and Roses.

I'm glad that I was able to give John a smile with my naughty caption...

Carlos

Carlos---What can I say, you made it to the top of the mountain again
with another one of your super recaps. You're a star, you never disappoint.
Maricruz wearing a well-fitted black and brown gown, slinks out of hiding and approaches her cunada
much as a lioness stalks her prey.
Excuse me, it's time to floss the cat.---Rancho Biege for Simona---extreme dimple alert---And that's not the worst of it...I also broke a nail. LOL Let's hope that she doesn't smudge her overly applied lipstick. Please ladies, tone down the lipstick, Maricruz included.

So know Raiza is helping Miguel spiritually---WHAT?

Guru Raiza---LOL Kelly

So now Lucia/Lucifer is challenging
God and little Miguel falls down the stairs. That was fast, God didn't waste any time.

The hump. Yes, I noticed Teo's hump too. The makeup department needs to get it right.

Susanlynn--- Your decription of the novela as depressing--it's getting good to me. Maybe you should try Mary Poppins over at Disney.

I like Maricruz even as she is entering into the vengeance mode. Mari is a fighter, she has to be to be able to have come through all that she did early on without loosing her mind. Mari has spunk, style, sophistation and a strong will that Lucia/Lucifer and to a lesser extent, Miguel, was never able to break. Mari is going to need strength and will have to put her strong will back in fighting mode to combat what is comming her way. In fact, she may need a ally or two from this point on. I can't wait to see who will come over to the Maricruz camp. Me? I was there from day one and I'm not leaving. Fight on Mari!! You go girl.

Before i end today, I wanted to say that I enjoyed reading everyone's TN stories. Some of them were very touching---Eli, Victoria L.
the gringo

Not counting myself or any of the other CI bloggers,I was thinking more along the lines of Raiza or Teo. Raiza puzzles me though. She seems to be very close to Tony and I don't trust him. Could it be that Raiza and Tony have something going that we don't know about yet?
Just to state it one more time, with blue eyes Karim going completely off his rocker and maybe
going into a partnership with the governor, with Lucifer's rage along
with Miguel---Mari just might need help. She's Super Mari but is she invincible?
the gringo

Gringo -- I too am in MariA's camp. For some reason also really liked the Conseco sisters, perhaps because they are women who saw an opportunity and took it. I just hope Raiza doesn't turn against or has always been against MariA. Also, please excuse my spelling. i once heard someone say they had little use for someone who could only spell a word one way. I am in that camp also.

Mari needs to start learning how to be nice to people if she wants some supporters in her camp, other than men trying to get into her knickers.

Thanks gringo,

I'm glad that you weren't disappointed. I would be more enthusiastic about Maricruz if she could get her priorities straight. I think a trip back to the old community would do us all some good. She could take Solita and child (has he been named yet?), Lupita, the monkey (what's his name these days?), as well as Juanita and Tobias.

As for our Susanlynn, don't go trying to send her off to Disneyland... we're old friends and I really appreciate her company here... she'll be fine.

Carlos

Emeraldrose---I would never look down on someone because of spelling
I have a very hard time with spelling myself. I would love to learn Spanish but need to learn English first---or at least a little better.
the gringo

Vivi---Mari needs to start learning
how to be nice to people if she wants supporters in her camp. I can't remember Mari being mean, nasty, rude or unfrindly to anyone
other than the people who have hurt her. She was friendly to all back in her pueblo and I see no difference now other than the fact that she is a savey no nonsence business woman with a business to run. Other than that, she is not unfriendly to people. Doris, yes--Karim , yes, Lucifer, yes, but to others? I don't see a mean spirited
Mari.
Why doesn't she go visit Tobias and Solita, Solita's baby and the monkey? Who is going to run the casino while Mari is away on vacation---co-owner Karim? Yeah right. That's all she needs to loose it.
the gringo

Since she has no Solita or Tobias to interact with, and we hardly see the baby, Mari's interactions with people vary from:

1) Polite, but condescending-- Juanita; Aracely (who she ticked off by trying to butt into her business)
2) Cold and condescending: Tony; Raiza; Ed;
3) Conniving and condescending: Miguel; Tav; Lucia
4) Hostile and condescending: Tav (at times); Doris, Mariana; Carola; Karim
5) User (what can you do for me, but don't ask me what I can do for you): The Gov; Teo

Not a lot of warm, fuzzy feelings emanating from our girl for anyone in our story. We never see her interacting with the rest of her staff to see how they are doing and how she can improve conditions for them. Even Carola was able to gain a loyal employee in Tony. Mari hasn’t really won anyone over to her side (other than the men who want her).

In the scene where MA showed O the IOUs, did anyone notice that when O was looking over the IOUs he said, "I don't understand all this. I'm not an expert in numbers", to which MA responded "But I am!!!" I thought that dialogue was hilarious.

Vivi - totally agree about Mari. I would like her a little if she was actually nice (for no reason) to someone.

I feel bad for Miguel. I don't like him or admire him, but I feel bad for him. He's the one who hurt MariCruz the least (compared to Lucia and Oblivious) but is the one who is (up to this point) suffering the most (albeit, not all due to MariCruz).

Gringo -- I too am having a hard tie with English grammar. I was too busy being cute in high school to pay attention to classes. (Who needed to know what I thought was "stupid stuff" like grammar) Now when my Spanish teacher asks to to identify and infinitive or some other part of speech, all i can do is say. Duhhh!! If only I had known. That goes for a lot of other things as well.

Carlos, you summed up the Karim plot perfectly w/unwanted guest scenario.
It's also disturbing to me how similar Tav is to Karim in his own denial about abandoning MC.

Latina - yes I noticed MA said she was an expert. I laughed. What is Tav an expert in except for not taking responsibility for his actions?

Vivi, l like your list. She's come a long way from that sweet country girl. I hope she can be saved.

Anon at 16:00. You shouldn't forget all the nasty things he said to MC and about MC when she was at the ranch. And you must hold him accountable for not standing up against the tyranny that was hoisted on MC by his own wife.I don't feel sorry for him at all.

Emerald rose..I teach grammar, and I would be happy to explain any grammar term to you...including infinitives and gerunds.

Latina,

well, after all she did have a double major in math and walking in high heels with a minor in table manners. Too bad she didn't take a course or two in the humanities.

Thanks Karen,

I'm sure that not only we and Maricruz are chagrined that Karim is still around but also the Guv with that 20 million dollar bribe hanging out there. Maybe he ought to get busy on those schools and hospitals he mentioned.

Carlos

Thanks Carlos, fantastic job as allways, loved the screencaps!

Poor bebe, maybe it is a divine justice for Lucia, but not fair to the little guy..

Love your list Vivi, MA really got far away from that loving, trusting country girly, it'd be a releif is she'd be actually nice with someone once in a while, just for the sake of beeing nice without self interest.

HA...a minor in table manners ...that gave me my first giggle of the day...thanks ! Carlos...I am off to the first day of the fall semester. Hmmmm...fall....what happened to summer. Insert BIG SIGH right here.

Karen
Oblivio is an expert in finding the airport, so far.

This site has a good grammar review

Susanlynn -- If I lived close to you, i would surely take you up on your offer. It is surprising how many of us in my class are in the same boat. Muchas Gracias

Thanks irisz,

I'm glad that you enjoyed the recap.

Thanks Variopinta,

Octavio does seem to be a pretty good pilot but are we going to make it through a TN with a pilot as a main character and not have a crash at some point?

Susanlynn,

I think that school starts here next week... where did the summer go?

Carlos

Slightly off-topic but perhaps of interest --

Here is an article on telenovelas that some of you might enjoy:

http://chronicle.com/article/Teaching-Telenovelas/140017/

It appeared last month in The Chronicle of Higher Education and was written by scholar of Latino Culture, Ilan Stavans. Prof. Stavans happens to be the son of 50-year veteran novela actor, Abraham Stavans, so he knows a thing or two about the soft white underbelly of the genre.

I was intrigued to see the same Ilan Stavans quoted in a piece in the New York Times a few days ago in a discussion of law, religious freedom, personal names and culture.

http://tinyurl.com/lpfzzgn

[You may, perhaps, have been following the saga of the Tennessee judge who changed a baby's name from "Messiah" to "Martin" and is now being challenged by the ACLU. It turns out, by the way, that there were 762 babies named "Messiah" in this country last year, putting it between "Scott" and "Jay" in popularity.

Anyway, Prof. Stavans weighs in on all the boys named "Jesús," for example, in the Latino world.

And in the same article, I learned that in the Anglo world, it was considered sacrilegious to name your baby girl "Mary" up until the 12th century.]

Nice list Vivi but MOST all on your list were never or will ever be friends of Mari, they will not be in her camp. In this novela the writers haven't given us or Maricruz much interaction with people othet than her enemies. I usually, no most always agree with you but not this time. Most of the people on your list have their own reason for not liking Mari and in return, I would not expect Mari to throw rose pedals down in their path. You haven't convinced me that Mari is a unloving, uncareing,
cold person. As I said before, she is a no nonsense business woman that has enemies but I don't see her as the cold person that you and others are trying to make her out to be. I think that when/after her battles have been fought, and the people who have made her suffer greatly have paid the price for their actions, you will see the true sweet nature of Maricruz that we saw in the beginning---and yes, she will be surrounded with friends. Maybe even some of the Caray people.
the gringo

Gringo- I'm not against Mari. I'm not rooting against her, and I’m sure by the end she will be all sweetness and light again. But the woman is not exuding much warmth towards anyone at the moment, or going out of her way to help others (including her friends).

An example of someone on the list who was not against her, and who she should be showing more warmth to-- Ed. Yes, Ed. He made sure she got to a hospital safely to have her baby, sent her flowers, and then kept her secret because she asked him to. He is in no way her enemy, nor has he ever done anything to her. The fact that he was a single guy who liked to date lots of women was none of her business, and nothing to hold against him. And yet, all she ever shows him is cold indifference or downright hostility.

Raiza is an example of someone, who with a little bit more effort from Mari, could be turned from not just an accomplice in ruining Miguel, to a confidant and friend. We have heard her thoughts about how she admires Mari.

Aracely could have been turned into a very good friend (and most of us thought this would be the case when Mari first came to the island), but all Mari wanted was to tell her what to do with her life and be judgmental. No extension of friendship-- just scolding her like a child. Aracely clearly wanted to get to know Mari and help her out when she first arrived. Mari couldn't be bothered to learn the first thing about Aracely (other than who she was dating).

These are just examples of people who could have easily turned into friends and/or allies. Mari missed the boat (but not the casino boat).

Gringo, I am with you on your assessment of Maricruz. She is too young, inexperienced, damaged to do any soul searching or self analysis at this point. Her sister is being taken care of. She is taking care of/protecting herself and her child and is redressing the wrongs that were done to her in the only ways she knows how which is making for a great plot.

Jarifa

It's fine if this is the way Mari wants to approach things. But the fact that she doesn't have any real friends or allies is her own fault. Everyone doesn't have to be her enemy.

I agree it is her fault that she has no friends/allies but given where she came from not that long ago and what happened to her and her family, she is not taking the chance of misplacing her trust again. She is on the revenge track: "take no prisoners"pure and simple; like a horse with blinders. As I posted earlier, it will be interesting to see when she considers the debt "paid" and then what she does with her life. We have such good discussions on this board!

Jarifa

Is t the point of this TN to demonstrate how, in her single-minded and obsessive need to destroy her enemies, a beautiful young woman succeeds in destroying what is good in her as well? Isn't that what they mean when they say revenge is a dish best eaten cold? I'm confident Maricruz will find redemption in the end.

Hi Paul,

thanks for joining in on the conversation. Of course Maricruz (and we as well) is at the mercy of the writers and what they make of her, so I think that your observation is on target.

Carlos

Great points--well said Jarifa.

I guess that most of us Paul, Vivi
and others will be very happy with Maricruz in the final chapter.
the gringo

@Carlos - "Too bad she didn't take a course or two in the humanities." Ouch!!! Don't be so sure about that, my friend. Just remember that the Univision broadcast is not even at the halfway point of C.I. yet. A lot can happen in the remaining 90 or so episodes.

And as with anything in life, all I will say is, be careful what you wish for. You may not like it.

Latina,

Oh my, sounds like I'd better stock up on Tequila.

Carlos

Oh my. I guess we should all stock up on our tequila then. So, will Mari go from cold and calculating, to a ball of mush and emotion? Will she end up a crying mess in a manicomio? Will she become a professor of humanities at U-DID (Universidad de Isla Dorada)? I can hardly wait to find out!

I have not seen any of the earlier versions of this tn, nor read any of the spoilers out there for this one. So, not knowing what's coming or how (or if) Mari is going to change for the better, AT THIS POINT she is very cold, condescending and unlikable (to me). My opinion.
