La Tempestad 30, Friday September 6, 2013 Trot Out the Tropes

A Patio of Lowered Expectations Discussion

“Dear Friends” – EJ taps on her glass to get the attention of the folks on the Patio, “We begin tonight’s recap with a quote from Sylvia’s Thursday night recap:
‘Ernesto’s pretend son loves Bea’s adopted daughter who doesn’t know she’s Merce’s real kid who loves the son of the man her real mom loved, who is hated by the man who secretly loves her mom, and a shark dines tonight’. (Wry appreciative laughter on Patio.)
“Sylvia’s hilarious summation of La Tempestad episode 28 compels me to ruminate a bit on the use of the trope in storytelling. The Oxford American Dictionary defines trope as:
“A significant or recurrent theme; a motif”. In common parlance the word is often used to describe an idea or theme that is too often recurrent, thus rendering many ‘tropes’ trite. Several years ago, recapper Julia came up with a definitive list of trite tropes that are used in telenovelas*. Julia identified dozens of such themes and created TN Bingo, which we played online for quite a while.
Tonight’s exercise will be to follow the happenings in La Nuestra Señora del Mar through the device of just a few telenovela tropes as applied to our La Tempestad characters, rather than reporting sequentially, as we frequently do.”

Telenovela Trope number 1: Confused Identities

In Ernesto’s Palace of Shame, a group of female slaves are paraded before His Evilness. He is particularly attracted to the stunning and silent woman. Macario tells Ernesto that she has not spoken since the storm and for this reason he has given her a special name, Hada, or ‘Fairy’. Of course we know Hada as Estercita, saved from the boat explosion, la tormenta, and the aftermath by the unkindness of strangers. They found her, saw she was pretty and decided she would fetch a good price on the slave market.  As Hada is introduced to Ernesto, he says, “Very well, Hada. You will have a good time with me.” And, although a loud chorus is heard from the Patio, encouraging Ester/Pester/Hada to run for her life, the little Fairy does not hear us as she allows Ernesto to kiss her hand.

Telenovela Trope number 2: High contrast in character and motivation: or Good vs. Evil

Now the view shifts and finds us at the Hospital in front of the ICU viewing window. Damian lies silent inside.  El Oso is restraining a screaming Mayuya, the female force of dank skankiness and darkness in this novela. Madre Eusebia, representing all that is bright, good, and light gets up in Mayuya’s grill. (OK, a bit of poetic license was taken there, but you know she just know Mayuya would have a scary looking gold and diamond grill if she could afford one). Madrecita Madrina Eusebia makes my day by telling May-U-Soon-be-punished, “Let me go, Stupid.’ If Mayuya could see her future, as Eusebia can, she would be very frightened! For some reason that cracks me up, as if it is the meanest thing the sainted Eusebia could think of to say. Mayuya is not moved and she bares her canines in disrespect. “Your stories do not impress me.” Well they should, MayMay, they really should St. Eusie is NEVER wrong.
Marina, who is boring but loyal and represents the height of good character, is standing behind the white and saintly figure of Madrecita Eusebia. (Yes, the trope here is obvious—light and right and reason versus hysteria and aggression). Marina tries reasoning with Mayuya, “ I know you are upset but you do not have the right to hurt me. I will not leave Damian. In fact, it is you who will be leaving!” Personally, I would want to reason with Mayuya with the open palm of my hand but Marina remains pretty cool and collected as she reminds Mayuya that Damian is sick and he does not need this. Mayuya should leave.
Mayuya screams at Marina 'You make me leave,’ and manages to look ridiculous while cool executive Marina orders Oso to grab Mayuya’s aSSets and get out of the hospital. Marina returns to Damian’s ICU room. Oso starts to obey Marina. He hefts Mayuya over his shoulder as she hurls insults at Marina through the viewing window. “One day your (Marina’s) mask will slip and everyone will see what a whore you are!” Just then, hearing the kerfuffle outside his room, Damian stirs and awakens. Oso see this through the window and unceremoniously drops Mayuya back to her feet. Whew. The powers of Darkness are held at bay for a time.
Damian says, “Marina, mi amor,” and a bit fat tear rolls down his cheek as she assures him that it is she, Marina, and she is indeed his love. At last he is awake! “What happened?” Damian asks Marina. Eusebia has come in the room and she tells him to stay calm, to not get too excited because he has to get well. “I am glad to see you getting better,” Eusebia smiles at Damian as her calls her Godmother, Madrina, and Oso interjects that soon the Capitan will be as good as new. Damian recognizes Oso and calls him by name. Marina caresses Damian’s face and tells him that the fact that he remembered everyone’s name means that the terrible blow to his head did no cause any lasting damage. Damian says he is confused, but that if he knows something it is that he loves Marina with all his strength. Wow. Marina kisses his forehead and tells him he is the love of her life. They share a very intimate and loving moment.

Telenovela Trope number 3: Corrupt Authority Figures

Fulgencio Salazar, Mayor of Nuestra Señora del Mar and Eurotrash Hernan meet and scream at one another on the patch of grass outside Hernan’s mansion. (Perhaps his maids wanted to do the floors?) They throw accusations of weakness at one another. Hernan is really worried about Comandante Robles and the Feds. He wants to take out Robles.
Fully screams at Hernan that he is crazy! If they were to kill Robles they would have the Feds all over the place! Hernan narrows his eyes and doubts that Fulgencio has what it takes to do their business. Why, just the other day Fully used the same excuse to convince his henchmen not to kill the boy Lazaro! Mayor Fulgencio is a bit impactada but he draws himself up to look insulted that Hernan implied that he, Fully, is the weak link in the business chain. Hernan tells Fully that he is just protecting his own interests. Fulgencio’s insistence of avoiding scandal is putting their business at risk. Fulgencio protests that while Lazaro is not important, he IS the nephew of the priest, Father Tomas, who is well loved in this town. Hernan points out that Lazaro’s status would not prevent him from having a fatal accident. Duh duh duh. Fully says that a fatal accident for Lazaro is a STUPID idea. If that kid Lazaro ends up dead the whole town will cry for justice. Then los Federales will investigate ALL the fatal accidents that happen in the town. “And we will not survive this, Hernan,” Fulgencio announces as he walks away.
Fulgencio tells himself that, while he will never acknowledge Lazaro as his son, he cannot allow him to be killed. He doesn’t want the curse of ‘blood killing blood’.
Deep in a secret location in la selva (the jungle) bad guys Lara and Nareo prepare a camping spot for the drop off of a new shipment of merchandise (slaves). Lara tells Lazaro that NOBODY must know where they are. Hapless Lazaro looks on as Nareo orders him to get the camp ready. “Is that my job? “asks Lazaro. Nareo snarls at him, “You are here to obey! You will work just like the rest of them. Be careful, kid. Just because we accepted you to work with us does not guarantee the safety of Jazmin and her sister. As soon as you fail us, they will pay!” Nareo holds the whip in his hand as he tells Laz the way it IS.
Laz says he is not there to expose himself. He is there to make money, and lots of it, like you guys. Nareo asks if he really thinks that the bad guy crew is making a lot of money??? No, it is the bosses that are filling their pockets with money! So, who are the bosses, asks Lazaro. Nareo says he will not tell him. He has been where Lazaro is three times and more! Laz wants to make lots of money so he can buy Jazmin! She will not come cheap, spits Nareo.
As Laz walks away, Nareo’s whip coils around his neck. Tonight the merchandize will be moved and Laz will help them with the shipment. If one of them escapes, he will pay with his life.

Telenovela Trope number 4: If You Make Mistakes, Redemption is possible but you will be punished first…

At Ernesto’s house, an underling named Blas enquires after Ernesto’s recent trip. Ernesto says it was fine. Hada/Ester comes in and again Ernesto seems enchanted by the ‘Fairy’. He tells Blas that Macario named her “Fairy” because she seems to have suffered a great shock and cannot remember anything. Nobody knows who she is or where she came from, not even her. Ernesto orders his man to take care of Hada and to make her ready for their guests. As Hada is about to be escorted out of la sala, she looks back at Ernesto as though he would take care of her. (Talk about misplaced trust!)
Sadly, now we see the Redemption trope in action. Hada/Ester yells “No!” as she is being led from the room, giving us a short memory of the now-lost Ester. But Ernesto, for now acting the part of the iron hand in the velvet glove, reminds Hada/Ester that even if she has lost her mind she must remember that she has no place to go. She will stay at Ernesto’s and live with him. If she is obedient she will be happy with Ernesto. Yikes! This could be a terrible punishment if Hada/Ester is not rescued first.

Telenovela Trope number 5: Mothers—Good and Bad, Real and Otherwise

Meanwhile, Hada/Estercita’s mama Delfina is in the hospital waiting room. Delfina is truly suffering as she misses her daughter. The good doctor comes and tells her that Damian is not well enough to be questioned regarding what happened on the boat. Just then, Mayuya clomps in wearing the super high platform shoes that surely once belonged to Estercita. Mayuya tells Delfina and Doctor that Damian is up and talking. The Doctor tells Delfina that he must check out Damian’s health before she can question him. Delfina is so worried about Estercita. Mayuya tells her that she was there when Damian woke up. If she had not been there, she is not sure if anyone would have told Delfina that he was awake. Delfina is so grateful that Mayuya is always so helpful. Mayuya has helped her in ways Estercita never did. (I should hope not! La vibora Mayuya is twisting her ways around her adopted mother’s heart when she says that she has always thought of Delfina as a ‘mama’. Poor Delfina, having lost one kid now takes a viper to her bosom. May-She-Be-Made-Into-Shoes then reminds Delfina how much suffering Marina has caused Estercita. I feel just terrible for Delfina. As an overindulgent mother, she too is being punished. And, as with her daughter, the punishment (Mayuya) does not seem to fit the crime.

In Mexico City, Mercedes is at her club discussing Doll’s failure to work out as a straight employee. She will already be back on the streets. Alicia thinks that Doll never really appreciated la Señora Mercedes. She runs into her friend on the street that is off on another ‘round’ looking for Sra. Mercedes’ daughter. (I just realized that bunions must be an occupational hazard of street-walking sex workers. That’s a lot of walking in really high heels! Sorry, I got distracted.)
Mercedes defends Doll’s behavior to her colleagues. She says that for Doll to end up on the streets she must have had a terrible childhood. Most sex workers have been abused or maltreated by their parents. Her male colleague seems unconvinced and opines that anybody can get a straight job. Mercedes says that many times us parents are responsible for the suffering of our children but most people do not want to accept that. For example, Marina turned out well because she had someone to love her and guide her in Beatrix. Magdalena, who was stolen from Mercedes by Ernesto, has not had the benefit of such love and guidance.

Now we see Magdalena talking to Doll on the street, (what a coincidence!) Doll remarks that Mags is quite dirty. She used to see Mags with her pimp daddy, at least then she was clean. Mags remarks that she has been called so many names she can’t even remember her own. Doll says she has a little money. She has always liked Mags and she offers to buy her a few shots. Mags likes that idea and walks off with Doll.

Mercedes reminds us not to judge anybody because we do not know what is in their past. Daniela Romo is so convincing as gives us this little moral pep talk.  I’m convinced, Mercedes.
Back at the Mayor’s Mansion Delfina is sobbing her heart out to Mayuya. Nothing can relieve the pain of losing her only child. What hurts her the most is that she did not even get to bury her daughter. There is no tomb for her to pray for and bring flowers to Estercita.
Fulgencio walks in and again, Delfina tells him that he got his wish; she has confirmed that Estercita is dead. He responds that just because he said he wanted Ester dead, he did not really MEAN it. Ester could still turn up somewhere. Mayuya promises each of the Mayoral family that she will be there to comfort and help them. What a sociopath.

Telenovela Trope number 6: There Will Be Significant Obstacles and Barriers To True Love

The Doctor examines Damian and tells him he is perfect, but we knew that. He says Damian must be made to endure storms and tempests but he will have to spend some time in the hospital. Eusebia tells him that she will take him home to their house and make him well. Marina says she will care for him everyday. Damian tells the Doctor that with all due respect, it is Marina’s love that will make him well. It was her love that brought him back. He kisses Marina’s hand. She tells him that her heart beats again for him.

Anvil alert. Damian predicts that there will be no distance or time that is stronger than their love.
Let all be forewarned that Significant Obstacles and Barriers To True Love are hereby foreshadowed. Damian calls Marina his lighthouse. She brought him back from the dead.

Later Delfina questions Damian about the accident. When Delfina tells him that Ester has not shown up, Damian swears by all holy objects that he looked, and looked and looked for Estercita. All he saw was the pareo. Delfina says the pareo was found on the beach. Damian offers hope that maybe, if the swim wrap made it to the beach, Ester was as lucky as he was. Perhaps someone, somewhere is caring for her. Delfina doesn’t think so, and neither do we. Damian survived by a miracle and perhaps Ester was not strong enough to fight the sea. She has to accept that her daughter is dead. That nasty skank Mayuya smiles in triumph at the camera while holding and ‘comforting’ Delfina. They walk down the hospital corridor and run into Lolo, who wants to know what is wrong. He offers to help, but Mayuya coldly pushes him aside. Now we see that Candy and the crew of La Tempestad are also there. Oso comes straight from Damian’s side to give the crew the good news! Damian is OK! All celebrate loudly.

Ernesto’s House of Shame

Hada/Ester is seen in a bikini and pareo tottering about on platform shoes serving drinks by a pool. Some creepy fat guy calls her a mermaid and tries to tip her but she shrinks at this touch. Fat guy asks Ernesto what is wrong with her, is she deaf? No but she is nearly mute, Ernesto comments.  He tells her to go play with the other girls in the pool. “No, not the POOL, “ cries Hada/cita. Fatso remarks that Hada/cita seems to be afraid of the water. Ernesto says that perhaps that is because she was found drowned and half-dead on the beach. He raises one eyebrow as he says this, causing him to look even more menacing. It is sure that she had an accident, as she does not know who she is. “Now, let’s get down to business”, says Ernesto to the two men with whom he is seated. “The documents have been revised. Tonight there will be a pool party to celebrate. You will get the girls you like to most. Let’s toast.” Hada hears all this and looks very scared. She also looks very beautiful. May I comment that she has a ‘WoW!” figure in a bikini?

Telenovela Trope number 7: Hidden Motives

At Hernan’s mansion he tells Valdivia that he wants Comandante Robles dead ASAP. Valdivia is a sadistic bastard. He enjoys telling Hernan that Damian is not dead and that folks in the town are saying that it is Marina’s love that brought him back from the dead. We know that Hernan has only two obsessions: Marina and his violin. I think might push Hernan's motives a bit more out into the open. He wants Marina. Punto.

True Love at Damian’s Bedside

Damian spends a lot of time repeating how much he loves Marina, they can face anything together and that he doesn’t want her to ever forget his love. (Why should she??? What’s up here, writers?) There were moments where Damian didn’t know if he could go on but he thought of Marina and kept on fighting. Marina cannot imagine what Dam has suffered. He says he went under the water and then looked and looked for Estercita. When he got to shore, kind people helped him He wants to go back and show his appreciation. Marina will go with him. Now we have more love talk. I am sorry but I can’t repeat it. They keep repeating the same stuff. Trust me when I say that they have declared their undying love for one another and they will be united forever.
Next, as they kiss, we see Hernan’s angry face at the ICU window. Warning!

Robles and Friends, a Force for Good

At La Guacamaya, Robles’ cop crew reminds him that Nareo’s house is bugged and they can hear every word spoken there. They seem quite pleased with themselves. They reassure him that soon they will know the names of the Big Bosses of the trafficking organizing. Robles thinks this is good because he found some other strange occurrences in this town that he wants to investigate. There have been several incidents that have only hurt Capitan Fabre and Miss Marina Reverte. Robles wants to know why!

Valdivia fiddles with Robles’ car, while rubbing his hands together in glee. Not really, but he gloats that it will be Robles’ last night in town! Later, Robles is driving when his car veers off the road and he hits a pole. His face has blood on it and he looks unconscious. Oh, no! One of the forces for Good is foiled again!

Telenovela Trope number 5: Mothers—Good and Bad, Real and Other wise, part 2

While Rebecca and Jose smile at the news that the Captain is recovering, Bea bemoans Marina’s infatuation with the Capitan. Tia Becky says that sooner or later Bea will have to deal with the Great Love that exists between the Capitan and Marina. Bea says she has tried to get her head around the idea, but it is impossible. She will never accept that he is the man for Marina.
Becky and Jose head over to the hospital to support Marina. They will go to dinner afterward. Beatriz encourages them to go but states she feel like a hypocrite if she went.

Mercedes calls Damian to congratulate him. She will see him soon. He tells her that when she returns to R-Laydee, he and Marina may have some very good news for her.

Marina wants to know the nature of the good news Damian was discussing with Mercedes. Cap'n Dam says, "We are getting married!" He knows it’s early but after all he has been through he knows he wants to spend the rest of his life with her. Marina kisses him as if to say yes and looks very happy.

Telenovela Trope number 8: A Boda and a (kinda) Happy Ending—Not so much, at least not yet

Hernan visits Bea. Hernan is the man with a plan. Hernan is sure that now that Damian is awake he will not leave Marina alone. Bea agrees that Damian is not the man for Marina but what can she do? Marina will not listen to her. Hernan says he has been thinking and…he would never do this if Marina’s welfare were not at stake. He needs Bea’s help. He wants her to pretend that her disease is worse and that she needs Marina to leave Damian in order to calm her. Oh, let not the good mother Beatriz be corrupted!

But she continues the conversation, asking if Hernan expects her to lie to her daughter. Hernan would not do this but…Bea agrees. Marina is completely taken with Damian. Hernan presses his point. They have to find a way to keep Dam and Mar away from one another. Bea says she must keep her daughter from marrying a man who is not good for her and who would condemn her to a life of unhappiness. Hernan asks if she will make a deal with the devil…and Bea agrees. She will pretend that her illness has gotten worse in order to keep Marina and Damian apart. Oh, MadreBea— say it isn’t so! And she has always been such a Good mother. Now she has moved—in just one episode—to the Dark side. Beware, Beatriz. It’s a slippery slope you tread upon…

Vamos a discutir!

I looked for Julia's list for Novela Bingo and could not locate it. If anyone knows how to find it, please post the list here in the discussion. It is hilarious.

Enjoy the discussion!

Stunning recap, EJ; you had me on the edge of my seat, and I had seen the episode. Wonderful, enjoyable reading.
I was wondering if anyone else saw all those anvil alerts. "There is no distance or time that is stronger than our love." When a couple on a TN says this you know they are in for a few months/years of torture.

How about this frequently found device: a forced marriage of inconvenience for questionable or unclear reasons. It is often followed by a second inappropriate marriage, so I wonder if Marina will actually end up married to Hernan.

EJ:

Wonderful, superb recap, it's poetry in motion! You have a very special story telling gift!

I feel so sorry for little Ester/Ada, she so didn't deserve this. Ernesto and his cronies remind me of the mob. Horrible guys all of them! Poor Ada looks terrified. I hope no one harms her, she has already been thru hell.

Marina and DamFab, sigh. As soon as he said para siempre there was the anvil! Eusebia did warn Marina about the obstacles. Too bad she didn't mention Herny by name!

Herny is beyond the pale. That man needs a huge, piecart the size of Rhode Island, well maybe not that but BIGGER! I really don't think that Marina will eva be into him!

Bea, for shame! In league with the Herny one. I guess when Becky told her Dam Delicious was the love of Marina's life, she was talking to the hand, cause the brain sure wasn't listening.

I am glad that Mercy is having doubts about the Herny one. I think Becky may be too, she is a sharp one. Maybe if they join forces, Bea will see reason, yeah when pigs fly.

Can't wait for Monday to see what happens next!

Great job EJ! Love the way you organized this.

Here is the link to Julia's Telenovela Bingo Cards: https://sites.google.com/site/telenovelasdesquiciadas/bingo

One additional thing that happened at the end of this episode-- Mecedes has her detective leave some food in one of Maggie's favorite trashcans, and she and her driver sit, wait and watch. Mercedes' mother's heart alerts her to something, and all of a sudden, BAM!, Maggie presses her drunk self against Mercedes' window and mother and daughter come face to face.

I am SO mad at Bea! I just can't believe she would go this route. I get that she disapproves of her daughter getting involved with a married, coarse fisherman. But to resort to lies and deceit is just so low. If Marina falls for this, I will be mad at her too, especially after spending this entire episode declaring her undying, unwavering love for Damian. (XN and WL must have gotten so bored filming those scenes)

Not that I think living with Ernesto is so great, but it might be better for Ester/Hada if he keeps her for himself, instead of selling her. Some of these guys look nastier than he does, and don't share his same fascination with her "magical" air. He might be more indulgent of her timidity and unwillingness to "service" because of his fascination with her. At least, this is my hope.

Hey, thanks first of all for the definition of trope. I've gotten quite hazy on literary terms, even getting muddled with 'is it a simile? is it a metaphor? is it just a dorky ol' symbol or image?....So feeling on solid ground right now, literary-wise.

Loved, among other things:

"dank skankiness..." (Wow, that image is so strong I can practically feel it and taste it.)

"bares her canines in disrespect" (Mayuya is really bringing out your best)

"May-She-Be-Made-Into-Shoes" (see above)

but my fave:

"St. Eusie"

We all need a St. Eusie in our lives, and an Elna June as well. Thanks for being in ours and blessing us with this fine recap.

There are days when the recaps give the episodes such new life, and this is one of those. Just wonderful EJ!! I caught a few of those anvils, but great credit to you for picking up on all the nuances. So enjoyed this.

So we have the set-up episode with LOTS of talking so we know where the problems for everyone will go for the next lord knows how many episodes. Blah blah blah, but necessary I guess.

Of course, no way is the road ever clear for the lovebirds and it's way too early for DamFine and Mar to sail off into the sunset, so last night may have been their ,ast night of happiness for quite awhile. But I do hope that our hero gets well fast because WL in a bed is not as much fun as WL parading around in his white pants and open shirt. Just sayin'

I have to admit, Ester is gorgeous and she is going to have a tough time fending off those leeches that hang out with Ernie-baby. I'm with Vii, her best bet at this point is becoming his personal pet, as disgusting as that even sounds. I"m rather fascinated at how long she remains an amnesiac and where that could lead for her.

I will no longer think of sitting at the Bea table. Let her want a rich dude for her daughter and not like her daughters choice in DamFine ( if she only knew the guy seems to be loaded), but to agree to manipulate said daughter and using an illness, yeah, I'm done with her. And of course, she just nudged her own anvil a little closer.

You are one funny lady and sister can you weave a tale! What a brilliant idea to use Julia's telenovela bingo as your mother of all tropes. Only got partway through your recap and will have to finish reading on the train, but just wanted to say kudos to your original idea and I am beyond flattered that you used my title.

"May-She-Be-Made-Into-Shoes"...bwahahahha!!! That is friggin' hilarious. More later...

Elna June: Your Trope theme was inspired and this was yet another incredible recap. Appreciate the nod to Julia for her creativity in this excellent theme.

Your explanation of conversations and events is unfailingly top notch and on point. This was simply marvelous.

"unkindess of strangers", "the female force of dark skankiness and darkness" and "gets up in Mayuya's grill" were a few of my favorites.

The slavery theme was especially appalling to me last night to the point I couldn't enjoy any of the Dam/Marina kissing and cooing. Poor Estercita, having no memory, being sold and put in that hideous den of iniquity, being pawed at, with nothing but a dark, dank future really gave me shivers. Gone is the spunky, fiery young woman, who is now but a shell of her former self. I see you agree Madelaine! As Vivi had pointed out yesterday, she really did not do anything terribly wrong and this crime did not fit any of her misdemeanors.

Emarie, "a second inappropriate marriage" may indeed be in the cards down the road. Two wrongs never make a right but that may well happen here now that Hernan has enlisted Bea in his futile quest. I'm not disappointed with Bea - I'm disgusted. Yes Daisynjay, she did nudge her anvil closer.

Judy said it perfectly, "We all need a St. Eusie in our lives, and an Elna June as well".

Diana

Marvelous recap, Elna June! Thank you.

Commandante Robles - I hope he'll survive. I like his character and he is actually smart for being a TN cop. It did not take him long to find out about JazLu and his idea of bugging Nereo's place was a good one.

DamFab and Marina - Loved their scenes together even if it did get a little repetitive.

Mercedes and Magdalena - Yes, they did come face to face. That was some cliffhanger. I can't wait until Monday to find out what will happen next.

Bea and Hernan - I can't believe that Bea is going to go along with the plan to pretend that her illness has worsened so she can separate DamFab and Marina. The fact that Hernan asked her to do is should be a red flag that he is not the nice guy she thinks he is. But she is so blind when it comes to Hernan. Unfortunately, Marina is the same way too when it comes to Hernan. I sure hope Marina does not fall for her emotional blackmail but this being a TN I predict that she will. Ugh!

Good Morning!

Emarie, it was so nice to hear from you. I has been awhile. Thank you for you kind words. ITA, DamFine and Marina are in big trouble. I hadn't even thought about the second inappropriate marriage device! What a good call. I think Ximena and Ivan would look sensational together, but Marina and Hernan? No, no, no.

Mads: Thank you for the very nice compliment. I always blush when I am complemented by another recapper.

Even though it was not a JUMBO episode, as Novela Maven calls the multi-epis that she Mauricio and she recapped this week, last night's episode was so filled with foreshadowing and dialogue that I could not find any place to summarize.
I love the idea of the 'piecart the size of Rhode Island' for Hernan's eventual demise. What a great turn of phrase, Madelaine!

Vivi: I was so hoping you might locate the original trite trope Bingo game that Julia crated. Thank you so much for letting us share your magnificent memory.

Good heavens, I missed that last scene of the show. Thanks so much for including it. This really was a pivotal episode in so many of the story lines.

I share your anger at Beatriz. Overnight she turned into a 'fair cow' as my grandmother would say. Lying to your adult daughter to manipulate her out of a relationship? How did she go downhill so fast? I think I can guess—she has a 'thing' for Hernan. it's not the first time we have seen that theme either.

As to your idea about Hada/Ester, I shudder to think that a life as the personal favorite slave of Ernesto is a better outcome than anything else. But, you are right. I suppose it would be better than the alternatives. Nasty, nasty.

Tricky of the director to have us engage a bit with Ester before giving her this horrible fate. It certainly serves to further engage us in the trafficking story, no?

EJ

Dearest JudyB:

I am glad you liked the edge that Mayuya brought out in me.

You are such a great recapper that any compliment from you makes me lower my eyelashes and blush.

As to your final comment,I very much missed your company in the months when I was not well and not on Caray Caray. Thanks for lending us your unfailing kindness, JudyB along with some tart perspective just when we need it.This board and its people are like a tonic for me.

EJ

Daisynjay: Oh, my we have so many of the old gang out today. Great to see you. As you say, this was the set-up episode, for certain. I thought the dialogue would never end. (Grin!)

With you 100% on Bea. I think her lung tumor may just grow a little faster because of the bad karma she is creating by joining Hernan in his schemes. I really did not see that one coming.

Sylvia: Thank YOU (with a shout out to Julia, may she always prosper)for your inspiration in the recap. May-She-Be-Made-Into-Shoes was the best fate I could think of for the viper Mayuya. I even hate her name.

Diana: I am delighted that you enjoy the recap and turn of phrase. I know what you mean about this terrible slavery/trafficking theme. It is overwhelming but I am thrilled to see popular culture making this horrific human rights crime the center of a telenovela. It really drives the point home, no?

EJ

Mauricio! Great to hear from you. After your EPIC recap this week I thought you might be exhausted. What a job you did!

On C. Robles, I really like him too. I never thought I could overcome his portrayal of the Evil One on El Tal but the actor has made me appreciate the character. I am still not sure of his motives with Jazmin. Maybe he wants to adopt her? Fingers crossed on both hands.

We have two big cliffhangers, don't we? Will Mags meet her Mom and will the Comandante meet his end in an car wreck (fatal accident, anyone?)by the side of the road.If he goes, I wonder who will be sent in to replace him???

EJ

Thanks for this amazing and extremely funny recap, Elna June. Your originality is incredible and although we never know quite what to expect, we can always rest assured that we'll be entertained and painlessly enlightened as well.

I'm one of those who looks forward to TN tropes... the more the better, I say. They are almost a source of comfort, familiarities to cling to. I look forward to seeing the old clichés tarted up and trotted out.

How about Eusebia? How many TNs have we seen her in? Remember Opalina and her snails (AV)? Luba (DdP)? Nati (HdA)? And of course Modesta (Alborada) who looked suspiciously like Eusebia. She is always mysterious and mystical and sees things that no one else can. Sometimes good and sometimes... not so much.

I feel a bit sorry for Fully. Now both of his children are ensnared in his evil business and not much he can do about it.

Carlos

It's actually amazing how little attention human trafficking gets in the media. It's the second biggest illegal money maker, just after the drug trade in profits. The bosses of one are usually tied/heavily involved in the other.

Elna June, you take my breath away. Your Tropical Theme is perfect and I love the way you develop it within the telling of the tale. I also love that you build on the witty foundations also established by Sylvia and Julia Your mind is a treasure, my dear.

Let me pause to admire your many names and descriptions of the evil one:
Mayuya, the female force of dank skankiness and darkness
May-U-Soon-be-punished
La vibora Mayuya…twisting around her adopted mother's heart
May-She-Be-Made-Into-Shoes
What a sociopath
That nasty skank Mayuya smiles in triumph at the camera while holding and 'comforting' Delfina.

But this is perhaps my favorite line in the piece:
The Doctor examines Damian and tells him he is perfect, but we knew that.

I agree completely on the importance of the motif of "light and right and reason versus hysteria and aggression (Marina vs. Mayuya)".
There is also, however, the traditional motif of cold, cruel calculation versus hot-blooded passion (Hernán vs. Damián). Maybe this explains why some on the Patio resist Marina: she is too cool. (One wonders if they will have the same complaint about Magdalena.)

Oh and thank you for clearing up the name of "Hada" (not, as I reported, "Ada"). For the life of me, I couldn't figure out what was so magical about "Ada" unless that day's writer was a Nabokov fanatic and the name was a shout-out to his literary hero. [Then "Lolo" might be an ironic allusion to…oh, er, never mind.]

This was such a joy to read and then to reread and savor. Thank you!

I think someone else has mentioned this already... Lolo seems smitten by Mayuya, but at this point, I don't see any way in the world for these two to connect.

Carlos

NM:

Hee hee hee on the 'Ada' reference. I haven't read the book in 25 years but I do remember that in addition to 'Ada', Nabokov gives us a character named 'Marina' (was she Ada's mom or auntie, I cannot remember). But her sister was named, humorously, Aqua, I think—not Magdalena. Oops there I go again, mixed up literary allusions..

Figuring out 'Hada' was deductive reasoning all the way—it was clear the name had meaning for Macario and I could not think of a Spanish word that sounded like 'Ada' and translated as 'brat'. Finally, the word 'Fairy' dawned on me, although we Irish do not think of our faeries as coming from the sea. In my warped logic, perhaps Ester's new name should be 'Sirena'.

So glad you enjoyed the recap.

Note: Today's recap was made possible by the kindness of Novela Maven, who switched nights with me.

EJ

Fantastico EJ

I'm confidant that Commandante Robles will survive. Remember the imbéciles that are doing the job. The fire is the only thing they managed to pull off.

EJ:

I'm not surprised you reasoned out the correct solution. That's some Sprachgefühl you've got on you, lady!

[Sprachgefühl: A feeling for language; an ear for the idiomatically correct or appropriate.]

Variopinta -- excellent point about the imbéciles. Let's hope they don't break their losing streak with the good Robles.

Elna June - Loved the trope theme. Thanks for reminding me what "trope" really means in the first place. My favorites:

"saved...by the unkindness of strangers"

"female force of dank skankiness and darkness"

Mauricio - ITA "should be a red flag [to Bea] that he is not the nice guy she thinks he is." Bea is failing big time here. Does she really want Marina to wind up with a man that's so lame he has to use trickery? Bea didn't think this through.

Even with amnesia, I'm guessing Estercita hasn't lost her sense of who's appealing to her. She was a pest before, but one with high standards to zoom in on DamFab. My guess is she will freak out at the first scuzz that tries to put a move on her. Agree she would be better off staying with Ernesto. She seems to view him as a father figure. It be wild if this evil one turns out to be more protective of her than Fully.

oops - "It would be wild..."

Another marvelous recap EJ. I love your nicknames for Mayuya.

I agree Estercita doesn't deserve her fate. I bet Ernesto
will teach her to be ruthless as he taught Hernan.

When the anvil alerts are up, I know everything will hit the fan pretty soon. I usually don't watch for a couple of episodes because it is pretty heartbreaking to see DamFab and Marina separated. Seriously, Bea is sooooooo annoying. She is deadweight. Everytime she is on screen, I cringe. I feel like she is worse than Fulgencio. I know, I know that sounds a bit harsh, but how could you make a deal with the devil, or in this case, the devil's son, aka Hernan. PORQUE BEA?!?!?! I cannot wait to see her face when she find out who Hernan really is.

Carlos:

"Lolo seems smitten by Mayuya, but at this point, I don't see any way in the world for these two to connect."

I don't see them ending up together in a little cottage by the sea. But I do suspect we'll see Mayuya noting and exploiting Lolo's weakness for her in order to hurt Marina or get close to Dam. Or both.

Elna June: I loved the name "Eurotrash Hernan". That fits him so well.

thanks, Elna June, for that excellent, thoughtprovoking recap.
regarding Bea, I do not agree with her determination to push Hernan on Marina, but in all fairness, she's not watching this novela like we are and seeing all the horrible things Hernan is doing. All she sees is the Mexican Eddie Haskell who went to school with Marina, Is always clean and neat, is always kissing up to her, and always hovering around Marina to "help and protect " her. Having two daughters, I know how much I wanted them to end up with good guys. However, my daughters never listened to me when I tried to promote guys I thought were good guys or when I tried to warn them about guys whom I thought were not good guys. Likewise, I was not the least bit interested in the guy whom my mother thought would be a great choice for me. Also, Bea thinks she is dying , so I think she wants to know that Marina will be with someone she thinks will take care of and protect Marina before Bea dies. Just being the devil's advocate. Bea has not observed anything that would make her think smarmy Herny is a bad guy...we've seen lots of evidence to support this, but Bea has only scene HernyHaskell. She thinks that Dam Fine is a poor, married fisherman. ..probably not the first choice of any mother for her one and only daughter. just say in'. Do not hurt me.
As for May-u-R-a-Ho....I am on board with public opinion on her.

Carlos:

Thanks so much for your comment. I love storytelling and the structure of our telenovelas are built around the familiar motifs.

Like you, I think the motifs are familiar and comforting. I find them a bit like an old friend who has an impish sense of humour; I am pleased to see them but I hope that they don't play me with a terrible practical joke.

As to Lolo and Mayuya; I fear he is chum before la tiberona. He is a total delight but like NM, I think she will use him to cause harm and eat him alive. Wow, it's a bit early to start fantasizing about how Mayuya might meet her end 100 or so episodes from now, but I find I really LIKE the shark image. sometimes I am so gruesome.

NM: You made me giggle with delight. A new word! I have a new word that I love and I have no idea how to pronounce it. It looks Germanic, but not having a word of the modern Germanic languages, I can't even guess. Could you do Hooked-on-phonics for me so that I can tell my husband my new word? I feel so....honored. Big grin.

EJ

Susanlynn:
What a great argument. You have also created a new moniker for Hernan; HernyHaskell.1 Oh, that is so good.

No I will not hurt you, but rather concede that you have a point. Why O why will we not listen to our mothers when they favor the good providers and solid kind fellows over the Cap'n Damians of this world? I love the description of DamFab as a "married fisherman". Of course, that is just what he is!! If you took away his looks, romantic soul and smokin' hot body could any of us recommend Capitan Damian Fabre as a potential partner for our daughters?

I don't think so. Great thoughts, Susanlynn

Variopinta: Thanks!I am so glad you have high hopes for C. Robles.

Niecie and Caroline: So glad you stopped by.

Mauricio: Isn't Hernan JUST Eurotrash? Of course, I ADORE, yes I am shouting here, Ivan Sanchez. I want him to be the galan to Sylvia Navarro in an upcoming TN. I think they would be great together.

EJ

A new word for you, Elna June? I didn't think I had one in me. Hahaha!

So it's one of those great German compounds and it literally means "language feeling" (sprach + gefühl).
[Think of Richard Strauss's "Also Sprach Zarathustra" /Thus Spoke Zarathustra]

In English, it sounds sort of like:

SHPRÁCH -GE - FOOL

The "ch" is the throat-clearing "ch" of "chutzpah"
The stress is on the first syllable.

EJ:

Here is a site I like for pronunciation although in this case, I don't think it's that helpful:

http://www.forvo.com/search/sprachgefühl/

Susanlynn- ITA. I actually haven't had much of an issue with Bea disagreeing with Marina's choice in men. Dam does not look like a good candidate on paper. My problem with her is deciding to lie to Marina about something as serious as her health, and using emotional blackmail to get Marina to do what she wants. She should also have some serious concerns that Hernan would suggest it. This is the first red flag she's had about him, and she should be taking it seriously. Her first instinct was to be appalled by his suggestion. She should have stuck with that gut feeling.

Or maybe:

Shpráhk-gi-fool

,,,and don't even try for the 'ch.' I wouldn't want you to hurt yourself. :)

Whewwowwie. There's nothing left to say about the recap, EJ. Magical. There's nothing trite or trope about the writing. I haven't even seen the episode yet. (Will do so sometime this evening.)

The comments have all been insightful, right on target...and funny.

Mads got it right, EJ,..."poetry in motion..." even when it was mostly prose. Somehow "prose in motion" just doesn't carry the same panache.

Could Marina herself be confused by her emotions toward both Damian and Hernan?

Damian--If Marina has never been in love before and this is her first experience, she's fallen hard, seduced by an expert. He's a damn fab kisser and says all the right things to turn her on and get her to respond. Nothing wrong with that if he's sincere.

However, from another point of view (the one Bea has), he's not good marriage material for her. I think she's aware of that. Damian even describes himself as a rough, uneducated, fisherman. He seems to be a bit of a wild child with a bad reputation with the ladies as a player, and seems to be poor.

Based on her social background, upbringing, education, career track, Dam's sort of prohibited bait. Under other circumstances, though, it would be a fling worth having.

Hernan--Marina has an image of him, developed in high school, as an adolescent. I think she's having a bit of trouble seeing him as an adult, more as a juvenile friend, even though she admires him for the successful man he has become.

Based on that image, she trusts him, and who wouldn't, he's so smooth, ever helpful and supportive, nice to Bea, and so far has only tried to kiss her a couple of times and got rebuffed. However, he never misses an opportunity to press his case for her affections and openly declares his own.

Marina lets Hernan get too close to her, invade her personal space, touch her in ways that would be inappropriate for an acquaintance or business partner--but she's letting him and he's taking advantage of it. She's sending him mixed signals for sure, especially the way she looks up and smiles when she's talking to him.

If Marina were serious about Damian, she'd tell Herny it has to stop and she should have been firm about severing the associate partnership.

Can't believe I spent all that time crafting my thoughts and Susanlynn and Vivi beat me to it.

EJ, thank you for this great recap, I loved it:-), I really think the writers overdid it with the foreshadowing when DamFab and Marina were confessing their love for each other. "alright, we get it, I know something is coming..."
Bea=Blech. Never liked her, really don't now.
Eurotrash=HA! super funny.
vivi=thanks for that bingo link, how fun! Ana

I sure have enjoyed reading the entire brilliant recap and everyone's comments today. EJ you are such a fun read. Sorry about not commenting much myself but I only had my Android phone and I hate trying to write sentences on it. Especially in the sun because I can't see diddly.

I love all the names for Mayuya, how to choose how to choose. I'm sure I will copy every single one, or at least the ones I remember.

Novela Maven, that is one heck of a word you threw out there! I don't believe I've ever heard it but it's simply marvelous. Thanks for sharing.

I have enjoyed the discussion of Hernan and how he comes across to Marina and Bea. I get why Bea likes him (up to this episode where he makes her his accomplice), but I don't get why she can't recognize that guys like Hernan, always "there", always ingratiating themselves, can become boring very quickly. (Compare to Jose who is super helpful without being a sycophant.) And Hernan doesn't get that Marina simply is not into him and I think would not be into him even if DamFab weren't in the picture. Anyway, that's my two cents on EuroTrash Hernan.

A fabulous recap, EJ, with the added bonus of seminars on literature and psychology. The combo package of humor and learning on this blog is just unbeatable. Thanks to all the comment contributors and to Vivi for always knowing where things were filed.

EJ, thank you so much your recap is a work of art.
Everyone has pretty much said what I had either thought about or wanted to comment on, so ditto to all of the above. Eusebia is one of my favorite characters and yes Judy B, we should all be so lucky to have one in our lives.

Elna June/ NovelaMaven - I'm late to the party once again (for 2episodes), and all I can add to the table is a heartfelt thank you for the incredibly stupendous, fabulous, humorous recaps! I am simply in awe of your literary skills.

I love to have a good hearty laugh, and everyday, I get that from everyone here. such fun, really!!

DamFineFab better be on his feet soon, cuz it ain't no fun when he's not swaggering around.

EJ,

We may sit on the patio of lowered expectations for our beloved TNs but recaps like yours and the others exceed the sky high expectations I have come to expect! What a bright, literary bunch you folks are! I was an English major in college yet had never heard (or have since forgot) the word trope! Is it sad to say this blog is my main source of education these days?!

And Viv, thanks so much for finding those bingo cards! HILARIOUS! I think we have covered an entire board in the past three episodes (kissing on beach, set something on fire, one of characters says name of TN, galan in hospital). Come to think of it, maybe that's how the writers write this show....with Bingo cards. "Have we used B3 yet? It's time!"

EJ this was just a treat from start to finish. I particularly liked:

Anvil alert. Damian predicts that there will be no distance or time that is stronger than their love.
Let all be forewarned that Significant Obstacles and Barriers To True Love are hereby foreshadowed.

And of course "May-U-soon-be-punished"

Thanks again to you and all the commenters!

Katy

Katy, I think you are on to something. You seem to have discovered the secret of the telenovela writers....bingo cards. BINGO. !!!!!!

It is never a good idea to involve oneself in your child(ren)'s relationships. It just isn't. Bea doesn't know Hernan is an oily creep, but that doesn't give her any right whatsoever to try to manipulate her daughter's love life. To lie and pretend her illness is worse than it is, especially knowing how much Marina loves her and worries about her, is just plain abuse. And she's always bragging about how smart, independent and totally self-sufficient her daughter is. She raised her right, for goodness sake. She should trust her to make her own decisions, no matter how much she likes Hernan. Her anvil should be that, though she thinks she's pretending, she really is dying!

EJ thanks for your wonderful recap. You were on a roll w/the tropes and commentary. And as others have noted, it seems Mayuya brings out a creative wicked side of you ;)

While I can appreciate Bea not liking Dam, what is exceeding unfortunate, as our Vivi noted, is her joining forces with Herny to manipulate her daughter. For characters that have morality, the means are just as important as the end game and her not going with her initial reaction. Unfortunately it seems an anvil will have Bea's name on it perhaps not fatal.

I am back from Alaska; what did I miss?

Off to read recaps and comments.

Telenovela interruptus is over.

Patio:

Hola. So busy today. More convo later.

Novela Maven:

“Sprachgefühl...There I said it. I have been practicing my ‘sprachgefuhl’ technique.

The WORD,
The marvelous word coming from my mouth
Starts out with a sibilant hiss,
I put my lips together and blow,
Then I cough up a hairball,
Gee!
Now I place my overbite on my lower lip and growl‘fuuul’.

My husband says all he could make out was the part where I called myself a Fool”.

EJ

The thing about Bea is, she is really worse, but doesn't know it. Remember a couple epi's ago, when Mayaya threw that note and called Marina a slut and Bea had that attack and the Doc told Tia Becky and Marina that her tumor was growing? They decided not to tell Bea again. So in fact, if that is the case, she really is getting worse, but that still doesn't excuse her from being in cahoots with Herny. And didn't Bea get a creepy feeling when Herny just waltzed into the house unannounced and wanted her to be in cahoots with him? Huge red flag! I think if Dam Delicious was at the door he would have knocked ; )

Elna June:

The WORD is now available at The Storm Cellar™ as a water-proof*, hand-lettered wall hanging. You will find it in the Department of Verbal Alchemy (where dross is routinely transformed into pure gold).

*Say it, don't spray it, sister.

I always hesitate to join discussions about what motivates our characters and whether they are worthy of our pity or our scorn. I doubt the writers have lost sleep over the moral worth of Bea's decision to ally with Hernán. It is a plot device. It keeps the story moving. And yet…I can't help myself from imagining a story behind the caricature. So here goes:

Beatriz is a "good" person who has been choking on her anger and sorrow for a very long time: knowing or suspecting that her husband loved another woman, however faithful he may have been during their marriage; knowing that the child she raised, her beloved daughter, is born of another woman, perhaps THE other woman.

And now Bea has to witness Marina's admiration, even love, for the strong women, Eusebia and Mercedes, that R-Lay-Dee has brought into their lives. Add to that her recent discovery that Marina, the doctors and even her sister, Rebeca, are treating her like a child who can't be entrusted with the truth about her own illness.

Hernán offers a way out of R-Lay-Dee and an escape from the strong women. If that means Marina has to give up Damián, well so be it. The weak and sick fight dirty or they don't fight at all.

The irony, as Mads so rightly points out, is that Bea's illness really is much worse, although, as usual, she will be the last one to know this.

NovelaMaven:

I completely agree with what you said about Bea and her motivations. Right on!

Gracias, Elna June! I always enjoy your recaps so much.

I'm doing a terrible job of keeping up with this show, but really enjoying it when I get around to it. Mostly, though, I watch it so I know what's happening around the POLE. Best hangout place EVER.

The mention of the Bingo cards reminded me that I was going to make more of them. I had collected ideas from everyone of more tropes that should go on them, but now I don't know what I did with that list. One of these days maybe I will find it and create some new cards, so our little game can cover ALL the Plot-o-Matic™ options.

I actually really like Marina, aside from her naïve trust of Hernia. I like the realism of a character who is good but more reserved, anxious, and a little higher up the autism spectrum than the normal heroine. We're an underrepresented segment of the population!

There's one thing I'm confused about; maybe I missed it somewhere: Does Candy know that the ladies in the house of ill repute are slaves and there against their will? Also, are Herny's Hoochies who are always smooching on him and frolicking in his pool part of the trafficked merchandise, or are they free-will floozies?

Julia:

" I like the realism of a character who is good but more reserved, anxious, and a little higher up the autism spectrum than the normal heroine. We're an underrepresented segment of the population!"

Hear, hear!

What does Candy know and when did she know it? Well there was a scene early on in which she confronted the slaver, Nereo, and told him she was severing ties with him. It may be that it took her a while to realize how he was getting his ladies; alternatively, it took a while for her conscience to kick in. Regardless, she is now one of the good guys.

Hernán's floozies are presumably part of the Evil Empire, just a little higher up the food chain than the girls who were ending up in La Guacamaya.

I for one am waiting breathlessly for the Bingo 2.0.

I don't think XN is doing a bad job of acting at all. I think she is doing a good job of playing an introvert.

Julia - I'm not very good at putting thoughts into writing, so i'm glad you did and am happy to concur.... I so totally agree with you re XN's portrayal of Marina; I can relate to her, which is nice.

Her expressions of emotion are more subtle and subdued than an extrovert's would be, but they are there. Shallowgal, I like that I can relate to her, too. I really get her limitations in reading other people's emotions and the way she keeps herself buttoned up.

Julia - literally buttoned up... unlike most protagonistas who dress sexy, she rarely shows cleavage lol!!!

I finally watched the whole episodio. I was especially drawn to Herny's girlie print, long, flowing scarf blowing in the breeze. Does he realize how feminine it makes him look? Nopis. Oh, I forgot he's a EuroTrashman, so it goes with the territory. That alone should have raised Bea's suspicion about his motives.

I also got right into the lovey-dovey smoochie our love is eternal scenario along with Marina and Damian. Who can resist those gorgeous man-lips anyhow. Yes, she's really into him now, no longer the demure Miss, she tosses aside her prior reservations, and is certainly fantasizing more of those Cave of Forgotten-then-Remembered Dream meetings and of future matings.

How ironic that now both of Fulgie's children have been drawn into his ruthless side-business.

Interesting juxtaposition for Mercedes and Delfina--One daughter lost to "the Trade" and the other one found. Except we will probably be made to assume Mags has never been "in the Trade" and so has avoided becoming impure (according to tn law). Are we also to believe she's still a virgin, like her twin Mar?

With an identical twin in the show, I can only anticipate a kidnapping and Trope No. 1 - Confused Identities. I will be particularly interested in how or if they film the two ever meeting, acknowledging Mercedes as Mommy and becoming besties without resorting to the back-of-the-head-back-and-forth cliche.

Julia...Ha.."a little higher up the autism spectrum." Yes, Marina is laidback and low key, but we're not dealing with Asperger's here. She doesn't have that trait of blurting out whatever happens to pop up in her brain due to lack of a thoughts editor.

I think X is doing a pretty good job , and I feel that she keeps improving as time passes. I prefer her subdued style to overacting.

Wow, portraying twins is a pretty tall order, especially for a newbie. , I am getting flashbacks of The Patty Duke Show." . " Yes, they're cousins, identical cousins..."

Amita- I had hoped that Magda had escaped Papito the Pimp before she had to become a working girl, but this episode when Muneca spoke to her and said she used to be clean when she used to see her with her pimp, made me think that Magda had actually had to service clients before she escaped. I guess we will find out soon enough.

That's Anita! Although I kind of like Amita-- a mix of amiga and Anita.

I have a feeling XN will play both twins like they are on Prozac. I don't think she's doing a bad job as Marina, but I do like a little more life in my heroines.

I like the spunky heroines the most, but if we are to have variety, I like Marina's personality. I really don't like the saccharine sweet ones or the lloronas.

I HATE the lloronas! I prefer her to a mini Victoria Ruffo too.

Julia:
So great to see you! Your take on Marina being an introvert is a good way to read the character and let's Ximena off the hook (smile) as well. A Flat affect is authentic, if she is very introverted.

So glad you will be making Bingo 2.0. I have dined out on the first version for years.

NM: ITA on Bea, especially the last point. The weak can wield the weapons of a tyrant, especially guilt and other forms of manipulation.

Of course I love to speculate on possible motives for the characters, as you well know. Hee hee.

Anita:

What a great comment on Mercedes and Delfina—daughters found and lost idea. The 'mother' theme is quite prominent in this TN, no? Rosy is another single mother who was doing her best but made mistakes with her son Laz (as all mothers do).

What does Candy know? Great question, all. She is the hooker with the heart of gold, but she also works for Nereo and seems to run a tight ship with her hooker/waitstaff crew. She has done nothing to really help Jaz/LU. I actually do not like the character.

I thought that Doll was pretty clear that she originally saw Mags when she was 'clean' when she was with her pimp. I cannot imagine that she has not been a sex worker. I imagine Mags' story will be quite tragic and that the best Mercedes will be able to do is (perhaps) create some kind of a relationship with her daughter. Mags is an alcoholic and if she has been working the street since she was a young woman she probably has AIDS. Also, a survivor of the street life will be tough, scrappy, manipulative and deceitful if they are going to give her role a 'real' vibe at all.How else would she have survived walking the streets in DF?

As the the confused identiy piece, yes, this has many possibilities, including Mags passing herself off as Marina for some unknown plot reason. NO SPOILER JUST SPECULATION. Mags having a kid with DamFab (accidentally of course, conceived when he was drunk and confused) oh, I can see so many ways for this to play out. It should be interesting.

EJ

Vivi and Julia:
Ditto on the lloronas! I want to feed them to the lions.

EJ

The last real llorona we had was Elisa in the Passion Pit.

All heroines are given plenty of reasons to cry, and do, but lloronas are that special breed who never miss an opportunity to cry "why me", and seem to sit around crying more than taking action and doing something about their situation.

Really, Vivi? I hadn't noticed that about Elisa.

hehehehe

EJ:

Why not feed the lloronas to the tiburonas? Now that's what I call poetic justice.

:D

I think Mags was almost definitely put to work in the biz. I don't think their names are a coincidence. Marina: Virgin Mary, the pure and innocent one, vs. Magdalena: Mary Magdalene, purported prostitute and fallen woman who is nonetheless on the good team and a respected character. Compared and contrasted to show that redemption is available for all. Or something like that.

LOL NovelaMaven. Thinking about Elisa makes me want to pull my hair out. I can picture her big fat tears rolling down into her ample fake boobs. Same with her BFF/Freinemy Paloma. Ugh! Two lloronas in one tn. It was just too much!

Julia- Great theory about the names of the twins!

Elisa: Just saying her name I want to cry or take a drink. OK, NM, to the tiberonas with Elisa.

Sigh, Passion Pit seems like an age ago...

Julia, Nice call on the twin names. I am glad you predict that Mags is redeemable. I imagine she is damaged beyond repair, an outcome that may reflect more on my personal worldview than on TN tropes. It would be lovely if she was made whole.

EJ

Julia..Interesting point about the names of the twins. I wonder how Mag will be portrayed. Right now , she is certainly a tragic figure....dirty, drunk, hungry, homeless. It is so sad to see the differences between the two girls and the completely different lots that fate dealt to them. A "There but for the grace of God go I" tableau.

Then, we have H(Ada) Ester being plunged into the same terrible world that Mags grew up in , and May-U-R-a-Ho taking her place in the comfy home.

I have no idea what direction her story will go, but I would like to see Mags triumph over her tragic circumstances. It's a pleasure we get to see all too rarely in the real world. Even so, it's hard to imagine that the life she's lived won't leave some scars. I'm curious to find out what sort of relationship she and Marina will have, given the immense differences in their lives.

gee, I couldn't stay with Passion Pit, and now I am glad that I fled. Any character that makes one want to cry or drink is to be avoided.

I, too, think that Mag will be redeemed, and we ill have mother Mercedes and her two lost daughters reunited as one happy family. however, all knowing Eusebia has already told us that May's future is. Not bright...no redemption for her.

I wish Mayuya had stowed away on Estercita's honeymoon boat to wreak havoc. She would now be feeding the fishes or, at the very least, also with Ernesto. Though I doubt she would be enjoying the preferred "house" status that Hada has.

LOL!! Feed the Lloronas to the sharks! I hate the shriekers too, like Licenciada Paula (Mayrín Villanueva) from Juan Querendon. I remember we called her the harpy on jet fuel. I disliked the way she dressed, too. I adore Marina's style.

cap'n...I agree. I love Matina's casual but feminine style, and it's nice to see a leading lady in cute flats instead of teetering around on sky high heels.

No..I said M-A-R-I-N-A.
