La Tempestad 44 – Thursday, 26 September 2013 – The Education of Damian Fabre or the Count of Mexi-Cristo
Gaol, The Classroom
Damian Fabre, who is reminding me a lot of Edmond Dantes,
has just finished his first reading assignment. Claudio is pacing the cell like
a good professor and Damian sits on the lower bunk in his cell, like a good
student. Damian tells Claudio that the book, Romeo and Juliet,
transported him back to those old times and that some things have not changed.
Couples still continue separating because of hatred and misunderstanding.
Claudio, who might be an Abbe Feria lookalike to Damian’s Edmond, hobbles over
to the bunk and sits down. Apparently he has a bad leg. He asks Damian, “Is
this your situation, Sailor?”
Damian says that the comparison between himself and Romeo is
not exact but has similarities. He thanks Claudio for having him read the book.
Claudio asks Damian if the book cause him to sail away and then, when Damian
smiles in assent Claudio waxes poetic about this being the first of many books
Damian can read. “Good wind and better seas,” Claudio pronounces the blessing
with a chuckle. He now offers to begin the Education of Damian and he will pick
the books. Claudio notes that he and Damian share a profound depression or melancholy,
and the way to treat the depression is to come to know oneself. Damian will
learn much from his studies.
The Kiss – Rebeca and
Jose
The hot kiss between Rebeca and Jose is shown again.
Whooeee. Jose parrots Rebeca’s words back to her, “A kiss is just a kiss.” They
part but Rebeca looks all shook up.
Marina is Sad
Marina is crying on the steps of the house. She wishes she
had gone after Damian and at least talked to him. Beatriz, whom I find very
hard to like, tells her that love never really goes away. She knows that after
all these years she still loves Marina’s father. But Marina has to accept that
Damian has hurt her in a very cruel way. Bea opines that Damian’s love was not
as grand as he claimed. Marina cannot understand; one minute Damian loved her
and the next he didn’t. She needs to understand and to have some peace. Only
Damian can take the thorn from her heart by telling her the truth.
Mayor’s House
Delfina and Mayuya are sitting around when in bounces
Ursula. Don’t wait dinner on her—she will be late. Mayuya explains that even
though Ursula knows no one in the village, she has been kind enough to offer to
help Candy, the owner of Club Guacamaya, with a dancing revue. Really? This is
SO random. Delfina objects and Fulgencio overrules her, telling her not to be a
snob. She is just going to help set up the show. Ursula bounces over and drapes
herself all over Fulgencio who leers at the exposed cleavage in her black
zipped bustier. OK, this character is 5 days old and already she is annoying
me. Mayuya and Rebaca will also attend. Delfina looks shocked and asks, “Are
there no more morals?” Sadly Beatriz, we are fresh out of morals and smooth
segues in this novela. It looks like the La Guacamaya Rockettes are moving into
town. Fulgencio warns that if the show isn’t good he will pull her out of it.
Delfina doesn’t want any more scandals in the family, and although Urula has
always been able to manipulate her Uncle Fulgencio, if Delfina finds that the
show is vulgar, she will send Ursula home. Hello! Earth to Delfina! Ursula is
on the shady side of 35 and I don’t think she needs your permission to do this,
WHATEVER, dance show.
Jaz/Lu Confesses
Jaz/Lu is at the church, crying real tears and she looking
very hot and uncomfortable. She confesses to Father Tomas that she and her
sister were kidnapped. They were from a poor but decent family, and when the
men kidnapped them they forced the girls to do things…” The good Father stops poor
Jaz/Lu before her confession becomes too explicit. No need to cause her more
pain. I agree. She is still a good girl and has not stained her soul.
The Gaol
Damian is reading when he is told he has a visitor.
“You (usted).” -
Damian
‘It’s me”. – Marina
“I never thought I would see you again.” – Damian
OK, it doesn’t sound moving when I type it, but Damian looks
studly and Marina incredibly beautiful as their stare longingly at each other.
The music swells. We have a moment of hope for the star-crossed duo, but no. It
is surely 100 Capitulo too early for these two to resolve their differences.
Now they mow the same dead lawn again. Marina doesn’t know
why she is there. She tried to find an excuse but she cannot get him out of her
heart. Damian’s kisses and words have doomed her to a life of despair. He is
sorry he hurt her so much. She says that falling in love with him was the
greatest mistake of her life. But she likes to be honest (unlike Damian) and to
do things face to face so she is telling him herself that she gave Hernan a
shot and he is by her side. Whatever that means.
Damian is an idiot and tells Marina he doesn’t know why
Marina came to jail to tell him that she and Horny Herny were going to begin
dating. He doesn’t care. He is not interested. Marina reminds Damian that he
was once very jealous of Hernan. But no,
The handsome dolt insists that all he wants is Marina’s
happiness and if that is with Hernan, so be it.
Marina tells Damian that she was trying to be honest with
him but now she will move on with her life. He acts like a total asshat and tells
her that when he gets out of Gaol he may not remember her anymore. What a jerk.
She reminds him of their destiny. Poor Marina is devastated, but she walks out
on him. Damian looks frustrated and trapped and hits the bars of his cell. No
wonder he is frustrated. It must be hard to be that stupid.
Hernan’s House
Fulgencio heads into Hernan’s house like a charging water
buffalo. (They are quite dangerous, you know!) Hernan is pithed and he is a
tattletale. He rags on Fully for letting Lazaro out of the business. Hernan has
already told the Big Boss about Fully’s bad behavior. It is endangering all of
them! Fully insist that Laz won’t talk. Hernan menaces with, “In this business
he who makes the wrong move pays very dearly.”
Mexico City
A tall blond, Soraya, comes to visit Doña Mercedes. She is a
hairdresser who has left the man she was with. (Why do we care??). As soon as
she heard about the situation she closed down her beauty salon. Mercedes needs
Soraya to help her find Magdalena.
OK, friends, call me lost. Call me crazy, but I think there
are an inordinate amount of stupidities in this Capitulo! Hey kids, let’s put
on a dance revue at La Guacamaya! Let’s introduce a woman with a beauty salon!
Let’s teach Damian to memorize and quote poetry. Ya, basta!
Eusebia the Shaman
Eusebia is standing in front of her alter. Some candles are
lit and she has filled this giant clamshell basin with some dark liquid. She is
looking in the liquid and she sees a dark shadow pass over her boy, Damian. She
prays for El Señor to protect Damian. Just then Delfina comes in. She doesn’t
want to disturb Eusebia, but she is waiting for news of Estercita. Eusebia
promised to tell her if she saw anything new. But all Eusebia can see is a very
black shadow looming over both Ester and Damian!
Hada/Ester Remembers
Her Name
Hada/Ester is beginning to remember things…yes, she
remembers that her name is Estercita!
Back At Mercedes’
House
Soraya agrees to help Mercy find Magdalena. She knows that
all the ‘girls’ around town know each other. She will help Mercy.
Are You Kidding Me?
La Guacamaya
So Candy and her two new BFF’s Becky and Ursus Horribilis
stand at the bar and look at a play list. They pick songs to sing and dance to.
O they are so happy they are going to produce this new dance revue at The Green
Parrot Bar. This is so stupid I am getting a headache. Ursus corners Becky and
gives her the third degree. Doesn’t her family oppose her doing the dance
revue? Ursie’s Aunt Delfina opposes her coming to Candy’s place. How did Becky
end up in RRR-Lay-Dee? What is her niece’s relationship with Hernan Saldaña?
Why so many questions queries Becky? Candy comes back and the girls drink their
cold beers and riff on the tropical theme
(feathers, great bodies, bright colors) of the new Show.
Gaol Classroom, part
two
When Damian comes back from his meeting with Marina, Rene
Casados, er, Abbe Feria, er, Claudio the King of Denmark, no. Wait, it’s
Damian’s gaol roomie, Claudio the Wise —sees Damian’s face and asks him what is
wring. Damian replies that he has just pushed the woman he loves into the arms
of another man. (Mads, isn’t there a song about that somewhere???) Why did he
do this, asks Claudio? Well, Damian replies that for love sometimes you make
the greatest sacrifices—like Romeo and Juliet. (Personally, I find that to be a
radical misinterpretation of the play and it’s meaning, but who am I to argue
with Damian’s logic?) The pain of this is tearing Damian’s heart apart. But he
knows that beyond time, distance and space he will go on loving Marina.
The Rectory
Rosy the hypocrite tells her brother, Father Tomas, that Laz
has left the house because of “That woman! That sinner! How can I let Laz be
with a prostitute?” Tomas thinks that Rosy should get to know more about
Jaz/Lu’s background before she judges her so harshly. Tomas reminds Rosy of
Mary Magdalena, that she, too, sinned, but that she repented and was forgiven.
He finally calls Rosy out on her judgments and reminds her that she “fell” (I
guess that means that she had unprotected sex with Fully and thus conceived
Laz.)
Jaz/Lu Gets a
Straight Job and Laz Has a Question
Nareo tells a delighted Jaz/Lu that she will now be working
at the Neptune Packing Plant. One of Nareo’s associates got her the job. But
Nareo will be watching her!
Laz goes to see Eusebia. He asks her if she knows the
identity of his Father. Is he alive? Eusebia says that it is true that she has
seem many things but that it would not comfort Laz to know the answer to that
question. There is some mumbo-jumbo about his shadow being low. I know. I don’t
get it either, but I replayed the DVR and there it is. That’s what she says.
Shrug? She tells him that only if he is ready (prepared) will he come to know
the truth. Or at least that’s my best interpretation of what was said.
Eusebia tells Laz that someone put this unease in his chest
and that someone (Don Fulgencio) is the only one who can restore Laz’s
tranquility. Fully’s bad intentions will come back to haunt him.
Fully’s back in his office being full of himself. He is
talking to Ernesto, assuring him that Laz is too scared to open his mouth. But
Ernesto says that things are not being done properly and that there are many
things in play. Ernesto does not look happy. I hope Hernan the tattletale is
happy now. Ernesto gives Fulgencio a big warning, “Do not betray his trust!”
Mercedes Prays
Mercedes prays for both of her girls. She has made many mistakes
but she will recover her girls, especially Mags.
Hernan Runs Into
Ursula Outside La Guacamaya
She assumes a posture only possible in super high heels and
super tight clothes—she makes her forward parts and her backwards parts stand
out at the same time. She chastises Hernan for hurting her feelings. I find her
repulsive. She is moving in on Herny like an October bear on a berry patch.
Back at home Hernan take s call from Hada/Ester. She needs
to see Hernan right away. She is having nightmares, they are getting worse and
Hernan said he would be her friend and help her. She knows her name is
Estercita but nothing else. She needs his help! Ernesto doesn’t want her
remember anything but she must. Hernan says he will help Hada/Ester but NO ONE
must know of this conversation, especially not Ernesto. Hada/Ester and Hernan
agree to meet.
Hernan thought bubbles that what is best for him is to get
Estercita back to town and to get her baby boy out of the way. I don’t know how
he knows it will be a boy.
Meanwhile, Mercy is at Soraya’s and they see Magdalena with
her pimp. Mercy decides to follow them so Mags won’t run away again. The pimp
bullies Magdalena along and into a very narrow alley. She says she does not
feel well. Mercy spies on them and sees all this.
Back at La Guacamaya
An ad was put out, dancers have been hired and Candy and
Ursie are ready to teach them some moves. Ursie puts on her own special dance
for Hernan who has wandered into the back of the bar. Ursie does some more
contortions where her front parts and back parts move in a contrived way.
Personally, I do not find her to be a good dancer.
Hernan is Everywhere
Becky runs into Hernan as he is leaving the bar. She is
surprised to see him there. Then Hernan
is at Neptune Fish, where he tells Marina that Neptune needs a secretary (we
assume that will be Jazmin) and that he has some pending business in Mexico.
She doesn’t care. She is still so sad after seeing Damian. Dam doesn’t love
her. Hernan says she should not punish herself by visiting Damian. She was just
the victim of his games. Marina deserves to be loved for the woman she is.
Mayor’s Office
Laz comes tearing into Fulgencio’s office and demands to
know the name of his father. Fully throws Laz out.
Final notes
Damian feels dead inside since he pushed Marina away from
him. Claudio warns Damian that Dragon and his gang are planning something very
bad for Damian. They are like jackals—they always attack from behind.
Ursula wows everyone with her dancing on stage at La
Guacamaya. She says she has always loved music. I think that she is dancing to
her own song. Candy has a surprise for the revue. Whatever.
Mercy has the detective lead a commando raid on the building
where her Pimp Daddy took Mags. A chase ensues. One of the body-armor clad
police gets Magdalena’s Pimp in his sights on the roof of the building. Sadly,
the Pimp Daddy is holding Mags hostage
right in front of the pointed guns. Ayi yi yi! Mags gets away. The Pimp is
arrested and Mercy catches up with Mags after a struggle. Mags passes out.
Rosy confronts Fully and tells him to stay away from Lazaro.

OMG, my recaps must make you cringe! My use of commas is not quite random, but since my head injury I find that I cannot remember any rules of punctuation. I sit at your feet.

This was an odd episode. There was all this filler about the stupid dance revue in which Ursula becomes the new major character in town but there wes also a lot of stuff pushed in at the end of the episode. I cannot tell if it was a compressed capitulo or not.
I also could not find a rhythm in the storytelling. It felt very disjointed and choppy. Oh, well. Maybe it was just me but I had a hard times getting my arms around this episode.
I do not like how Fully is toying with Laz. Of course, I don't much like how Laz's mom treats him either. Laz is truly unfortunate in his 'choice' of parents.

Marina gingerly lets Hernan hold her hand in front of the street crowd that includes Damian's loveable but motley maraneros who are as disapproving of this as a bunch of church ladies would be.
Laz learns Jaz will work at Packadero. He tells her he needs help stealing Nareo's cellular, she will get him drunk.
Then a long scene with Mercedes weeping like the Pieta with a passed-out Mag in her lap, in the car.
Hernan drops by Ernesto's casa, Estercita has a brief chance to talk to him, she wants him to tell her more about her past, "Who is Damian?"
Then the advances: More of everything. Damian has more suffering by an assault-perhaps directed somehow by Hernan, it is not clear, and Estercito remembers more, and Marina is even more miserable with Hernan.

EJ- Sorry you got such a disjointed episode, but you did well with it. I haven't watched the show all week, so I appreciate all the great recaps this week. By the way, Soraya isn't a new character. She was the one who first told Mercy where Magda was last seen and about the pimp who was keeping them both prisoner.

"the Count of Mexi-Cristo" had me smiling away at the get go. Elna June, this was a treat for the mind and heart. Deliciously written -you culled an amazing recap from very little (and quite confusing) material. Wonderful!

I thought Hernan's parents death might mean there was a tiny heartbeat of kindness somewhere within him. Having him coldly plot to kill Ester and her child proves there is most definitely not.

Good morning everybody. Man, I love me a cranky Elna June. I'm feeling quite annoyed with this show right now and I'm delighted to find a lovable, clever, fellow sufferer to carp with. (too many commas?)

Masterful recap! You took a disjointed, condensed epi and spun pure gold from it. Marvelous!
Marina has turned into a sniveling hot mess, and DamIrritating has become, well irritating. I can see why DamIrritating is continuing to lie, but Marina running into Herny's arms, what gives? I have an admission to make. When I was watching last night I thought "Whew! I'm sure glad EJ has this episode. Surely SHE will know how to spin this burlap into gold." This morning I read "The Count of Mexi-Cristo" and nearly lost it. I just knew you would figure out an original angle. Well done! Your recap was a delight from beginning to end. Even your occasional gripes about las estupideces made me laugh.

Thanks for all the supportive words yesterday. I just needed to vent to someone. my mantra is "it is what it is. focus on what is instead of what if., Luckily, hub and I had tickets to go to a Beach Boys concert with my best friend and her hub last night. It was a wonderful diversion to be with two people invented known since I was a teen (hub and Carol) listening tunes that are fun and carefree. If you ever have the opportunity, go to see this group. Only two original members ( one was lead singer Mike Love) , but the group sounded great. They gave a 2hour concert with no intermission !!!!

You need a comma after a conjunction (and, but, or, etc.) if the conjunction is followed by a complete sentence (subject and verb. ). Ex. I love him, and he loves me. I swim in the afternoon and go to the park in the evening. Sorry...I couldn't help myself. I have to explain this rule every semester.

Me, I don't mourn the morals but I could use me some nice smooth segues now and then. Ah well. We'll have to use our imagination. (Fortunately, Thursday's child abounds in imagination!)
In one passage:
Damián is "an idiot," "a handsome dolt," "a total asshat," "a jerk." And best of all: "It must be hard to be that stupid."
Well. I see you feel our hero's choice is DamDubious, not to say DamImbecilic. Or am I reading too much into your words?
"Fulgencio heads into Hernan’s house like a charging water buffalo. (They are quite dangerous, you know!)"
For some reason, this just cracked me up. It felt like we were hearing a "Just So" story told by a civilized, comforting narrator. (I guess we sort of are.)
As for Ursula's charms, I may be imagining things but I think they have been substantially exaggerated, fore and aft, since I saw her in La Fea Más Bella. I can't blame her -- now that she is swimming in the sexy villainess typecasting pool, she has to do something to, er, stand out. Ni modo. She is a great-looking broad.

I got a giggle out of the subtitle "Gaol Classroom" A few years ago, I was asked if I wanted to teach ESL at the local jail. I declined because I am a bit claustrophobic and didn't like the idea of doors being locked or having to collect all the sharpened pencils at the end of each class session. Diana: So glad you enjoyed the recap. It sure felt like a condensed episode, as you say. I love Rene Casados, sigh. He is such a fine priest or wise-man. It is funny to see him looking so ruffled an fussed. Even in jail, tho, the man shines.
JudyB: You know me so well. Cranky is a great description of my state of mind as I wrote the recap. I hope I am loveable and clever—as you certainly are—and I am honored to suffer this portion of the TN with you. I fear, my dear, that we have hit the skids.
I will also try to cheer up at the Vera Cruz Rockettes storyline. I think I am annoyed at having the Ursula character forced down our throats. I must admit that the Parrot-ettes will be more fun to watch than the endless sobbing and estupides that we can certainly expect.
Ursula's build! Wow, what a body that actress has. At her age, the tummy baring bustier was bold but I must say it worked.

On mowing the same dead lawn...I am glad you were pleased with this turn of phrase. It came to me as I watched Marina sob and Damian sob. May I suggest that all of us come up with new metaphors for boring, repetitive sobbing sequences in this TN? Why? Wait, I see with my prescient third eye (and with the help of a call from Madre Eusebia) that we are in for many more epis of crying, whinging and hand wringing. This recapper will be gnashing her teeth.

May I suggest that all of us come up with new metaphors for boring, repetitive sobbing sequences in this TN? Why? Wait, I see with my prescient third eye (and with the help of a call from Madre Eusebia) that we are in for many more epis of crying, whinging and hand wringing. This recapper will be gnashing her teeth.

I forgot to say how much I enjoy Rene Casados in general and especially in his role here. EJ, cheesy is a perfect word for him (one of many, with a nod to fortune cookie wisdom), but he's just so darn good at it. He's also very likable in his cheesiness. I had to laugh at his lame leg; was it lame before he kicked the bad guy or afterward? And if he was lame before then I guess he's not too lame for a well-placed kick or two. I can't wait to hear his back story.
EJ, I echo your congratulations to Team USA. Both teams worked incredibly hard and wow, what a comeback. I was sending as many victory vibes to Team USA as I could, although I have also been a fan of the Kiwis for a long time. I am very, very glad to have my time back. (And that's nothing compared to people I know who have been working 24/7 for about three years!) I had a fun gig pointing an antenna at a helicopter but it was an all-day commitment and it just kept going on and on and on.

To be honest, I don't really mind looking at DamStudent as often as I can. It was funny to hear him reading out loud as if he were a 3d grader (not trying to offend 3d graders everywhere).
Where has Best Dressed Eurotrash Hernan gone? He goes to see Ernesto dressed in Saturday-lie-around-the house sweats and jeans?
If Delfina is offended by the idea of a song and dance review at the Guacamaya, why isn't she offended by and speaks up about the skimpy seductive attire Ursula has on. (I've decided to refer to her Trouble with Two Tatas, although I do like Ursus Horriblis).
Speaking of inapproriate attire, why did Marina think an extra short skort & shorts were ok at the trial, post-trial, visit to Damian, office work and walking down the street with Herny in a very conservative fishing village? Where are her cute nautical togs?
If only Esthercita knew how much danger she's in confiding in Hernan. Did she remember him, too? I can't remember now--it was so many episodes ago....
I'm off to the Wash Natl Opera production of Tristan und Isolde tonight. (Please, please, DVR, work your magic tonight--don't rob me of half of Marido like Comcast did last night.) Maybe that's the next romance story DamAbbe should give our DamCount of Mexi-Cristo. (Just loved the allusion to a crackin' good story, EJ.)

Elna June, I love your theme. The Count of Monte Cristo is my very favorite book. Now if only DamFab can emerge from the hoosegow with the smarts and self-control of Edmund Dantes! That would be a treat.
