PEAM, Tuesday 9/17/13 (#136): REDFINGER
Xochi asks: who am I to get in the way of true love?
Wait, is this a riddle? Can I answer? Xochi, you're Fernando's wife and you're truly in love with him and your true love is just as good as Díscua's if not better. Plus, there was that wedding and everything.
At the manicomio, Marta and her long-lost identical twin Marcia throw creepy looks over one another's shoulders as they embrace. (When people get too much Botox, I can't read their facial expressions. When TWINS get too much Botox, it's twice as bad!)
Rogue is soaking his finger in a glass of water. (Suddenly I have to go to the bathroom.) He tells Cantú that he's breaking up with Verónica TODAY! Careful, dude... she does NOT take rejection well. Rogue is annoyed that Nick expects him to be at his beck and call. I'm sick of looking at Rogue's cold, wet, red finger.
Vero, the virulent moron, the 100-pound malignant tumor in Chucho's life, sets up the voice recorder on her phone and pays Nick Donovan a visit at his hotel. The room is filled with smoke, making Nick look even more cartoony than ever. She says she's here on Rogue's behalf. Nick gallantly puffs cigar smoke in her face. Vero tries not to look scared.
Alma brings Chucho home for a surprise party, because if there's anything a convalescing stomach patient needs, it's excitement and fancy food. His is greeted by his entire extended family.
Actually, it's a pretty quiet get-together. Valentina tells them all about Rogue's ghostly visit with his curls sticking out at the top of the sheet. Then they all tickle Chucho? Hello, stitches?!?!
Nick asks Vero, "Rogue sent you?" "Yes, and for your information, he's my pareja." "Rogue tells you about our business?" "Oh yeah, everything." "Well, a pretty woman changes everything. You're sure he won't mind?" "No, he totally knows I'm here. [coughcough] Is that cigar necessary?" "Sorry, I'll put it out."
Rogue and Cantú show up at Nick's. These new arrivals barely have time to react to the sight of Vero when Nick crushes Rogue's wounded finger in a firm handshake. Rogue asks for a triple-whiskey. Rogue plays along with Vero, sure, she's totally in on everything. We can trust her! (If her phone is a REAL telenovela phone, it will crap out on her just when the conversation gets interesting!) Vero winks at Rogue. He clenches his fists; maybe today's not going to be the day he dumps her after all.
Marcia tells Marta she's going to come over every day. Marta says she wants to ask Valentina's forgiveness. Marcia says it's okay, she was sick, and now she's getting better. And this time, nobody died - unlike that time when their house burned down and their stepfather died. "And by the way, thanks for saving my life," Marcia adds. (Great, more backstory. Just think what this would be like if it were a drama!) Marta wants to thank Chucho for helping her. Marcia says she'll do it.
Chucho and Alma go to church to give thanks for the miracle that saved Chucho's life, as well as all the friends and other blessings that have come their way.
Eli calls Paty at Avon to invite her to breakfast early tomorrow morning before she goes to work at 8 in the morning.
Vero and Rogue are at home now, just outside the patio door, and he's hollering at her for meddling in his private business. "I'm tired of you and the girl! Pack up your things and get OUT of my house!"
Eli, Valentina, and Sansón observe all of this from the sofa. Finally, Rogue spots them. "WHAT??" he screams defiantly, and runs up the stairs like a defiant child. (Sansón does not follow.) Vale is worried. Vero assures her that Rogue is just in a bad mood, and it will pass. Eli reminds Vale not to play any more pranks; I think he's warning the wrong person this time.
Someone else is packing her bags... Xochi. Díscua came to the office to see Ferni today, Xochi says, and Xochi saw him! "You saw me what?" Fern asks, bewildered. Xochi saw his FACE when Díscua was saying that they have a bond that can never be broken. "You were victims of circumstances," Xochi says. Fern insists that he loves Xochi. "Resolve things with Díscua and then we'll talk," she says. He doesn't want to let her leave, but Alejandra helps Xochi take her bag.
Vero tells Rogue she somehow already made a backup copy of the recording from the meeting at Nick's hotel, so don't even bother trying to delete it from her phone. It appears that Nick filled her in on the entire scheme, so now she's able to blackmail Rogue out of breaking up with her. If he does, Cinthia will send the recording to Delia. Hmm... well, who am I to mock true love? Rogue bangs his wounded hand against the door by mistake as Vero slams the door in his face.
Alma and Chucho watch a movie and she gets very weepy at the end. She tries to blame it on the weather but then admits that it was the movie, something about a defenseless child, and caresses her belly. I suppose this is better than barfing or fainting like most pregnant heroines do.
A Few Days Later...
Chucho goes back to work and reminds Augusta that he belongs to Alma. Then, because people can roam the offices of any business in Monterrey unescorted and unannounced, Marcia shows up and Chucho is shocked... Marta? (Of course not. Marta may be batshit crazy, but she would never wear a thing like that on her forehead!) Marcia introduces herself and explains that there was no one at the reception desk. Augusta gets impatient with Chucho for not tending to business. (Augie, if you don't like it, why don't you take it up with the receptionist? Or, I don't know, lock the doors or something?)
Chucho seems uncharacteristically skeptical about Marcia at first - Marta never mentioned a sister before.
Chatita and Saturnino knit with pink yarn. It sounds like they're doing a 2K/2P ribbing. He admits that he's not really gay - and he's falling in love with her. He kisses her, just as Pánfilo comes through the door and sees them. Pánfilo sneaks away and doesn't see what happens next: Chatita fetches her chamberpot and scolds Saturn for playing hot-and-cold games with her. Saturnino runs away, and Chatita gloats about how irresistible she is.
Fernando goes to Díscua's office and says Xochi left him a few days ago. Díscua takes this as a sure sign that he's coming back to her, but Fernando is confused at best. Sure, he remembers what they had together - and he also remembers how he felt when it was over and when he fell in love with Xochi. He leaves.
At home, Cardenas tells his mom that things have been tense with Jessica lately, and he doesn't know why. It all started when he suggested that they become more intimate. He wonders if she has some kind of illness, or maybe something contagious. Mom urges him not to jump to conclusions. Just speak to her with love. There's nothing in the world that can't be cured by love. (Oh yeah? Ask Xochi.)
At Avon, the secretarias and Alejandra try to cheer Xochi up, but she doesn't think she can compete with the "Goliath" of Díscua. Susana reminds Xochi that David beat Goliath against all expectations.
Chucho and Marcia talk. He promises that he's not holding a grudge against Marta, but he's not sure if it's a good idea for Marcia to meet with Valentina. At any rate, he's glad Marcia's around to show some support for her sister.
Fernando tells Rogue about the breakup with Xochi.
Marisela finds Ricardo reading from the Sacred Book of the Beings of Light. He tells her not to call it a "cult" and if she doesn't mind, he is TRYING to read. She leaves in a huff, and he thought-bubbles that he's not washing his brain; he's filling the emptiness in his heart. He weeps.
Paty gobbles her breakfast in a hurry, trying not to be late for work. Eli knows she's excited to be working at the same place two days in a row, and she's also excited not to have stolen anything yet. He wants to talk about something else: taking their relationship to the next level. They'll become novios. She is VERY enthusiastic about this idea.
Xochi goes crying to Alma, who tries to cheer her up.
Rogue tells Cantú that Vero is extorting him, and he wants Díscua out of Fernando's life. Cantú says the authorities are watching their every move. Now, the captions are a little screwed up, but I think Rogelio has an idea to get Díscua thrown in jail!
At Orion, Chucho is distracted because he knows Alma's surprise is arriving just now. Augusta is annoyed with him as usual. To add to the festive atmosphere, Chatita arrives. "You ought to have better security here," Chatita scolds. She introduces herself as Chucho's mother. She's brought his special lunch. Augusta leaves in disgust. Chatita warns Chucho to watch out for that woman.
Alma's surprise is a big arrangement of red roses. Then a big arangement of pink roses. Now white roses. The cards say: "You deserve all the flowers in the world, but I'm just getting started, I haven't blown my entire paycheck yet. These red roses symbolize your great beauty and the passion of our love that grows every day. The pink ones represent the admiration and appreciation I have for you, my angel. And the white ones are the symbol of our future. My love for you is pure and will last all our lives."
Alma is very excited, but I notice Chucho still hasn't put a ring on it yet.

Following up on the mention of carrot cake decorations earlier:
So I was at the store this evening and they had a cake that was decorated like a carrot cake except the "carrots" were red. I thought maybe they were chili peppers, like this was some sort of chili cake (maybe a chocolate cake with chilis, it could happen) but it turned out to be red velvet cake. I don't know what the red things were supposed to be. Does velvet have leafy green stalks like a carrot??

Loved Alma's purple dress...a nice length too...it didn't need the huge brooches ...but was still lovely and very tasteful on her.
Nick is speaking english with a vey thick Spanish accent....he truly must be black Irish.
That was the most modern Catholic Church I have ever seen in a novella. (Surprised they didn't have a neon bingo sign on the front lawn....I can say that because my vacation church in Jersey has one!). Gertie

Yeah, I'd eat that - but the package said it was red velvet cake. And NO WAY would they put chilis in a cake around here without putting all kinds of warnings all over it and calling it chili cake and "WARNING: IT'S NOT A RED VELVET CAKE LIKE YOU THINK! IT CONTAINS CHILIS! WE'RE NOT KIDDING!! JUST TRY A PIECE IF YOU DON'T BELIEVE US, YOU'LL BE SORRY!!!"

I think Royer to Cantu that they could make it look like Discua was involved in their bidness maybe, and she could be a patsy. I'm not for sure.

Thanks for the wonderful recap! Loved the comment about twins and Botox. I am going to have to see if that mysterious chocolate cake has appeared in the groceries around here.
What a stupid idea for Marcia to talk to Valentina. Jesus better keep saying NO. So how long before Marta is on the loose again? Just wondering . . .

i loved the Paty /Rlias scene -- and it was very well acted. I liked that she joked a bit about being a ladrona and immediately realized that it was inappropriate. She was all set for the brush off because she has so many problems. So her ecstatic kiss was wonderful. Elias' face was priceless. I loved how he said that he'd take her to work & they could continue the beso I mean the topic later. All in all avery satisfying scene.

I'm glad Jesus is out of the hospital, had some days to recuperate, and now has a Zen attitude about everything. I really hope he doesn't cave to this Vale meeting Marci thing. However, Vale is so mature about this crazy stuff that she'd probably easily accept this. Of course we know this is likely just an elaborate setup for Marta to grab Vale again. I can see exactly how it will play out.

Hopefully, Cardie's mom's good advice will mean that they will straighten out this issue of Jess's secret (betting it's a tattoo), and they can get back to their cute romance.
As for Fer and Xochi...that's a mess. I think Fer was clear with Discua that what they had is over and he loves Xochi. But he can't deny that learning the truth of how they were separated unfairly has affected him. How does he close that circle when Discua doesn't want to close it?

I'm glad Jesus is out of the hospital, had some days to recuperate, and now has a Zen attitude about everything. I really hope he doesn't cave to this Vale meeting Marci thing. I can see exactly how it will play out.

Others have certainly said this and I agree, sometimes I'm confused about whether I should be laughing or crying with this one. Watched Monday night’s ep last night. It was a fun one, like you all said. Looks like I’m going to be a day behind this week.
OT: Because of our Foyle’s War discussion, something told me I’d better check and make sure there wasn’t any new eps I hadn’t seen. I thought the series had ended when the war ended. But I see there’s a new three episode season this year. I’ve been deleting them off my DVR thinking they were old repeats. Thank goodness we have four or five PBS stations. I have been watching Silk. I just love the PBS Masterpiece Mystery series. Silk is pretty good but Rupert Penry-Jones, is how shall I say this, an a**hat in this series. You would like it I think. I was appalled that Chucho's loved ones would tickle torture him when he JUST had stomach surgery. Hasn't he suffered enough? Why were they so determined to make him laugh? It HURTS to laugh when you have abdominal trauma! So rude.
I think Venom is getting in over her head with Nick. Start of her downfall? I hope so! I also hope the judge finally finds the wisdom to get Val the heck out of there.

Judy, I agree with you and Julia. Frankly, as soon as I saw all those roses I thought...wow, who died? Then thought, Chucho isn't this a bit overkill? But then I remembered these are a twosome who have been making each other paper cut-outs to impress each other, so I guess Alma would get excited about something that had more than one dimension to it.

I'm guessing Chucho will surprise Alma with a room full of candles and even more roses. Maybe an elegant meal with a serenade. Sweet as he can be, Chucho is not very original. The two of them always seem so formal together, which to me is not really very romantic, or at least not very passionate. Pati and Elias were way more on fire.
I also don't like the gross generalities being spewed, such as Doña Su's "ALL women LOVE getting flowers!!!"

Chucho and Alma are sooo dull. It’s refreshing in a way to see a tn couple that is so normal. But I enjoy the kooky chemistry between Elias and Pati more.

I think roses are too default and cliché and show a lack of paying attention or caring about what the recipient really likes (unless she just happens to LOVE roses). Roses are boring. Now if someone sent me some poppies, that would actually be cool. Or an aloe vera plant, maybe.
Julia- I guess since he's aleady sent her her favorite flowers, orange tulips, he feels like it's already been done. Although he has had roses at each of their romantic encounters. Maybe ornage tulips are hard to get hold of?
Royer already gave Alma the perfect ring - chosen by Chucho. That complicates the ring selection somewhat, probably. But he really needs to ask her to marry him soon, whether there's a ring or not. If he waits much longer, she'll announce that she's pregnant, and then it'll look like he's only asking her because of the baby. (Actually it won't look that way, but if they happen to be arguing about something stupid at the time, she'll choose to see it that way.)
One of my favorite flowers to buy myself when I was in high school were Sterling roses-- a lavender/purple rose, with a heavenly scent. I've not seen them anywhere else but that part of CA. Most roses sold commercially don't have a scent or don't smell very good. But this one has a wonderful sweet smell, like jasmine.
Maybe he'll get her a charm ring, and have the turquoise heart, a red bucket, and an origami angel hanging from it.
Vivi, when we were stationed in England there was a rose field nearby. Acres and acres of them. When the breeze blew the scent our way, it was pure heaven. Sad that not many varieties have much scent any more.
How wonerful Emilia! English roses are supposed to be the most fragrant. A whole field of them would be amazing.

The best flowers I have ever smelled were in my uncle's garden; they were just called "night-scented stalk". They only have fragrance at night, apparently.
Purple lilacs are my fav and seem to be in season for about three weeks in the spring.
I got double yellow tulips for my birthday once from some co-workers.

Daniela, BEETS you say? That is certainly different from how my friend used to make her specialty, Red Velvet Cake. She used lots of red food coloring, simply dreadful. And I always had to have a slice else I would hurt her feelings. But I could get behind beets which I love. I'm glad things have changed. Maybe I'll try a red velvet cupcake, but I will definitely ask to make sure they used beets and not red food coloring.

I think making red velvet cake with food coloring is cheating. Also, not good for you (even more than cake is already not good for you. I like it with beets and cream cheese frosting.
