Qué Bonito Amor #105 (Mex 143) Monday 9/9/13 Love Among the Ruins

Lo del Pasado

Santos thinks of Maria and the head shots, Maria and Susanito talk about his problem.   Concho talks about Susanito [fortunately he doesn't know about this problem] and his forthcoming medical problem.  Maria writes another letter.  The guard talks to the warden.  Mike goes to see Santos in his cell and they argue (see Friday's entry). He's losing his perspective in accusing Santos of caring only about Maria and not about Justo and Wendy.

Lo de Nuevo

Deserted Street: Justo pulls up in his car to suspenseful music as Giuliano lines up a shot with another hunting rifle.

Mexico City, Street: Oscar takes a walk with Angelica. They're eating ice cream as he talks and points out his Mariachera, the car, and invites her for a ride. We see that she is wearing platform wedgies [so the actress doesn't look too short next to Pablo Montero, who still needs a shave].

Federal Prison / Deserted Street: Santos calls Justo to warn him not to pay the money. Justo tells him in no uncertain terms that he will do what it takes to save his family, finally hanging up. He places the metal briefcase in the garbage can and Giuliano fires and misses somehow. Justo looks up briefly, then gets into the car and takes off as Giuliano does a slow burn.

D.F.: Oscar and Angelica are on a street bench. She is clearly impressed with him, telling him he's very handsome [So, Angelica, please tell him that ladies prefer that he shave!] so why has he had such rotten luck in love? He doesn't go into detail except to say that “uno pochito” took the heart of the lady he wanted. Angelica, however, is still seeing opportunity.

Hotel Restaurant: Rubén and Elvirus toast with mimosas and get fake-complimentary with each other when Mirna arrives. Elvirus is annoyed at the interruption, demanding to know what she thinks she's doing there. Rubén gently upbraids her for her rudeness, then tells her that Mirna will be helpful. He cautions Elvirus silently as Mirna sits next to him in the booth. When he sits Mirna begins playing footsie with him, which he cleverly does not telegraph to the less intelligent Elvirus.  [Issac Hayes has been watching this:]

Justo's Office: We don't know whom he's talking to, but he's explaining he doesn't want to leave until he gets Santos out of prison. However, he knows Wendy needs him, too.

El Padrino's Office: Giuliano gloats over the $10 million and his alleged intelligence, saying it's all his. We'll see about that.'

Mendoza Apartment: El Jalisquito begs Amalia to lift the grounding, but she's not going to. Fernando agrees with her. He tries to put El Jalisquito on the spot, asking him if he wants a mother and father. He answers “Just a dad because mothers are always scolding.” [regañandoso] Fernando gets on his case, saying that to have both parents is a great blessing. His tone becomes sad as he thinks of his own parents, saying that to have a mother is beautiful.

Federal Prison Mess Hall: Don Nando sits with Santos, wanting to know about the man he knows who resembles him. Santos thinks of his conversation with his father about MilAmores and his comment about what a good friend he is. Back to the present when Don Nando talks about a difficult childhood. A guard (the one who had the Spanglish conversation with the warden in the previous episode) hands Santos another letter from Maria and he tells him “Take it back.” After the guard leaves Don Nando asks him what's wrong and he explains.

Mendoza Apartment: Maria shows the returned letters to Wendy, who doesn't get it but thinks there has to be a big reason behind this. Fernando agrees but before they have a chance to speculate Wendy has another contraction. Maria helps her to sit down.

Federal Prison, Corridor: At prompting from Don Nando and over the sounds of his own song, Santos explains that he misses Maria and misses Mexico with its sounds, cuisine, Plaza Garibaldi, and people. Flashback to a meal Ana served him at the club, telling him she would like to open a restaurant.

Mendoza Apartment: Maria is channeling her mother at the mariachi shrine, thinking of Jorge Alfredo as she looks at the suit.

Ana's Apartment: Buffalo arrives to tell her that Siete Mares is in the hospital. It's serious and if this happens again he will have to stay there. Before Ana can say much Jenifer comes in and greets Buffalo. He tells her not to call him any version of that, that his name is Simón Rigoberto Juarez [finally a guy who doesn't like nicks!] but he doesn't guarantee to answer to that either. He tells Ana the name of the clinic in case she wants to visit, then departs.

JNTR Club Room: Fernando introduces Maria who sings “Mucho Corazón” while we get scenes of Ana visiting Siete Mares, who says he wants to die, Santos and Don Nando trying to figure out how to get out of the prison, Ana telling Fernando about her visit to the hospital. Amalia getting another one of her attacks, and Roddy at the blackboard in school. Fernando reproaching Siete Mares for taking refuge in booze, and again with Santos and Don Nando talking about the potential Great Escape. Jalisquito playing with Fernando and Ana, and Santos trying to sketch the escape route.

A few days later (we are actually told this by They Who Write On the Clouds)...

Exam Room: Maria addresses the academic committee on the subject of helping the disaffected and disenfranchised in order to move the country forward. It is the responsibility of their profession to speak for the elderly, the children, and the poor. With love and justice they can make this the country they dream of, she says. The band sits in the back row behind others whom we assume are the other classmates at Maria's grade level. All applaud and the guys start playing, but Oscar realizes they probably have overstepped. He starts to restrain himself and the others while Fernando apologises. However, the professor congratulates Maria and presents the certificates. She is now a lawyer, Felicidades! [And where does that confetti come from?]

Federal Prison: Don Nando and Santos (who are somewhere near the water or fuel pipes) talk about the danger of attempting to escape. Santos tells him he'd rather die than not escape to protect Maria. Little do they know that two guards are observing them.

Exam Room: Maria dedicates her license to her mother, her families, and to Jorge Alfredo. More confetti and Maria is hugged in succession by each of the band members.

Medical Office: A cardiologist tells Concho he needs an operation because the treatment he was under for the previous two weeks hasn't worked. Concho looks afraid and vulnerable. They will need to pay some of the money up front. Lourdes is there and being the appropriately supportive wife.

Federal Prison: “Tonight's the night” says Santos; Don Nando can't quite believe it. As he limps away on his cane, Santos becomes concerned.

JNTR: Maria enters with her documents. The place is empty and she looks around sadly while thinking of Jorge Alfredo and cries as she thinks about how much she misses him. She prays for a miracle. In her mind she's singing “De Que Manera Te Olvido” and he's there on the stage with her, clean-shaven and wearing the black traje de charro.

Federal Prison: At the same time he looks at another drawing he's done, thinking about how he doesn't want to forget her.

JNTR Club Room: Mirna sneaks in as Oscar tells Laurel and Hardy he will be driving Maria to Tijuana that night. He's not too happy about it. He would be even less so if he knew that Mirna is crouching behind the bar eavesdropping.

Rubén's Office: He answers his cell phone and it's Mirna with the update. Elvirus is standing there during the conversation.

Lourdes' Apartment: She and Concho return from the doctor's office. He's upset because he doesn't have the money for the operation. He clutches his chest and sits on the couch, but this is no Fred Sanford act.

Rubén's Office: Elvirus starts to lose it, but Rubén tells her she has to be cold and calm when attempting to hurt someone. She realizes he's right and he grins.

Mendoza Apartment: Amalia reproaches Isabel for having eaten all of something intended for the family. Before this becomes a bigger deal, Oscar arrives to get them to come with him. No explanation.

Federal Prison: Over the sound of guitar music, Santos thinks about how soon he will be with those he left behind in Mexico. We see – in his mind – Susanito sadly playing his trumpet. He talks about wanting to compose and Santos telling him not to abandon his dreams.

JNTR Club Room: Oscar leads the Mendozas and Wendy in. Everyone else is there as Maria shows her the certificates.

Street: Rubén and Elvirus are with a mechanic (?) who is told that the Mariachera must function for a few kilometers and go dead. The guy nods understanding, then opens the door. By shoving a knife or something near the lock above the handle. Elvirus gloats that Maria and Oscar will be together all night and she will never see Vargas again. However, ,it looks like there is an eyewitness across the street who might spot something from over the roof of the taxi passing through. Rubén talks about him buying the business so that it will belong to them. Elvirus loves the idea [Methinks he's just playing her]. They kiss while the guy they hired cuts some wires. There are kids playing ball in the street.

Federal Prison: To the sound of suspenseful music Santos climbs around the bowels of the prison looking for the exit he planned on. He looks behind himself every few steps either for Don Nando or to make sure he isn't being followed. Someone puts a hand on his shoulder and he turns around in shock.

JNTR Club Room: Amalia speaks of her pride and Maria tells her “It's yours.” [WTF??? Maria did the work on that.] More confetti (which is shot up like uncorking a champagne bottle). Maria then tells her family she will leave today to find Jorge Alfredo.

Avances

Amalia collapses as Santos falls into a trap.

Lyrics

Mucho Corazón”

Di si encontraste, en mi pasado
Una razón para quererme
O para olvidarme.
Pides cariño,
Pides olvido
Si te conviene
No llames corazón
Lo que tu tienes.
De mi pasado preguntas todo
Que como fue
Si antes de amar debe tenerse fé
Dar por un querer la vida misma
Sin morir, eso es cariño
No lo que hay en ti.
Yo para querer
No necesito una razón
Me sobra mucho
Pero mucho, corazón.
De mi pasado preguntas todo
Que como fue
Si antes de amar debe tenerse fé
Dar por un querer la vida misma
Sin morir, eso es cariño
No lo que hay en ti.
Yo para querer
No necesito una razón
Me sobra mucho
Pero mucho, corazón.

De Que Manera Te Olvido”

Veras que no he cambiado
que estoy enamorado,
tal vez igual que ayer.
Quizas te comentaron,
que a solas me miraron,
llorando tu querer.
Y no me da verguenza,
que aun con la experiencia
que la vida me dio.
A tu amor yo me aferro,
y aunque ya no te tengo,
no te puedo olvidar.
A tu amor yo me aferro,
y aunque ya no te tengo,
no te puedo olvidar.
De que manera te olvido?
De que manera yo entierro?
Este carino maldito,
que a diario atormenta a mi corazón
De que manera te olvido?
Si te miro en cualquier gente
y tu no quieres ni verme,
porque te conviene callar nuestro amor.
De que manera te olvido?
De que manera yo entierro?
Este carino maldito,
que a diario atormenta a mi corazón

De que manera te olvido?
Si te miro en cualquier gente
y tu no quieres ni verme,
porque te conviene callar nuestro amor.

Comments:
Ay, dios mio; this episode really tried my patience.

The most interesting thing about it is the evil triumvirate of Ruben, Elvira, and Mirna. Elvira is dumb enough to trust Ruben, Mirna thinks she can manipulate Ruben with sex, and he is just taking advantage of both of them. What does everyone think Mirna is really up to here?

BTW, the book signing I attended was for Wolf Moon Rising, written by none other than Lara Parker, the original Angelique from Dark Shadows! I gave her a note about last weekend's discussion and here's hoping she reads it when she gets home tomorrow or the day after.

OH MY GOSH, Urban! This is FANTASTIC that you met this actress from "Dark Shadows"!!! I am SO excited!! You've got to follow up on this. You simply have to follow up!

Thank you for a super dooper recap! Mirna is a piece of work, let me tell you. I have no idea what she's up to, but she is a piece of work.

Fatima

I've met Lara before and she is very gracious to her fans. She's been coming to DS events for years and will sign autographs for as long as anyone is there. I will upload a photo later; my camera is still in the bag I took with me last night.

Mirna is a piece of work and right now it's anyone's guess as to what she is really up to. She's always been out for herself but I am wondering what she has observed about Ruben over however long he's been hanging around stalking Maria.

Good work UA--you got all the facts and then some good asides. Can't believe you could concentrate on QBA knowing you were going to attend a sort-of DS thing.

I still can't believe that Santos and Old Fernando are allowed to run around inside the prison anywhere they want to, observed or not. You'd think other prisoners wouldn't mind a stroll through the tuberia in the dark. What was it that Santos fiddled with -- electric circuits? Nothing happened. Maybe he's saving it for later.

Why were the mariachis invited to Maria's presentation and degree award ceremony and NOT her family? Granted they gathered later at JNTR, but it all sounded so impromptu. Knowing Amalia, she would know exactly what her daughter was doing 24/7 and would have expected to be present at "graduation."

ITA that right now the best thing going on is what Ruben has in mind. No wonder the character has outlived all the other villains.

And OJ? Don't get me started or I'll rant on. One shot and he gives up? And he gives up when Justo gives him a clear shot getting back into the car? Well, let him disfrutar of his 10M for awhile before he gets caught.

Maria--you don't know what you are in for.

How's this for stretching the next few episodes. Maria makes it to L.A., goes to the prison and finds out Santos has escaped. Then, not knowing where to go, goes to Justo's house only to find out he has gone to D.F. to be with Wendy. Meanwhile, Santos makes it to D.F. only to find out Maria has gone to L.A. Talk about duh....well, duh.

I think what Santos fiddled with had something to do with the electrical system but who knows.

The last couple of episodes have dropped some what I think are heavy handed hints about what will happen in the end. I've always thought that Santos with his money will be in a position to help his friends with their dreams. We know now that Susanito wants to go to school to become a composer and now that Ana wants to have a restaurant. Any bets that before this is over they will have their dreams and the others theirs as well thanks to JAntos.

The mystery of Justo and his confident goes on. He wants to leave but to go where? Perhaps back into the diplomatic corps.

What is the point of sabotaging the mariachimobile? Why didn't Ruben and his gang of two twits just tip off immigration that the flashy car was going to be used to sneak someone over the border.

Good for Fernando is agreeing to discipline for Jalisquito. The kid needs it. I wonder if JAntos will be able to spring the old man, help him get some of his memory back and reunite father and son. Or will he figure it out, the old guy die and then tell Fernando about his father and how he was wrong that he had been abandoned.

It took me awhile to figure out why Maria didn't have her family there when she took her orals. She had told Wendy that she wanted to surprise her mother so I guess she waited until she had the documents in hand and then arranged to JNTR celebration.

So it looks like Spanglish guard who spoke both English and Spanish badly is working for OJ.

I just have to vent about the bad English/Spanish, you would think that with all the money Televisa has they could hire someone to speak proper English, but nope. It drives me nutty how bad the English is, if you can't do it right don't do it at ALL!

Eli, at least that's giving equal time of a sort. It always disgusts me that Televisa assumes that nobody in the US short of a CEO or genius doctor can speak Spanish correctly.

URBAN & ELI

Living near the border like I do in a city with a huge Latin population we get a lot of local commercials done in Spanish. It is awful — they get the words right but the accents are terrible and they speak unnaturally slowly so you know they learned it phonetically and really don't even know what they are saying. Then I think if I were speaking Spanish in Mexico I would probably sound as bad as that guard did and Concho with his fractured English. Actually with Concho I'm glad for the subtitles they show because I almost never understand what Pineda is saying. LOL

I dearly hope that Don Nando survives long enough to be reunited with his son. It would be criminal for him to die before Fernando (hijo) can know he wasn't abandoned.

Think Ruben would be entertained by a Mirna/Elvira catfight?

I can see Ruben really enjoying aa twit cat fight and probably provoking it.

I too hope the two Fernando's can be reunited. I always love watching how they do it with the same actor playing both parts. '-)

Thanks for the recap! A part of me figured that Justo wouldn't die, but if it had actually happened I would've had fit.

So a few episodes when Santos and Michael came face to face with a bound and gagged OJ in prison, I was wondering if it was the work of corrupt prison guards and looks like I MIGHT be right. Considering how the Spanglish speaking guard is in contact with OJ.

Ruben seemed to enjoy riling Elvira up about an alliance with Mirna.

I wonder what's going to happen with Susanito and Ira.
--TF

That guard who speaks both English and Spanish badly was a hoot. I wonder what language he DOES know and where Televisa dug him up.

I also wonder what kind of mileage the mariachi-mobile gets and if that sombrero will hold up at highway speeds. It may be my very most favorite part of this whole show (after Jorge of course), but it sure wouldn't be my choice of vehicle for a road trip. I thought the plan was for Coloso to drive Maria to TJ and drop her off, not drive or escort her across the border, but who knows. Long term planning isn't really any of these fools' strong suit.
