La Tempestad, Thursday November 14, 2013 — The Penultimate Storm

-->
Pregnant Much?? Not Really.

Damian ‘outs’ Estercita’s fake-pregnancy ruse by pulling the pregnant foam belly out from under her dress in front of the whole town. He then throws it into the crowd, a bit like it was, say, a garter from a wedding. I guess if you catch the fake belly you will be the next one in Our Lady of the Sea to show up semi-pregnant.

Damian and Marina kiss and make up. They have overcome all the obstacles to their love.  (Maybe not. This is only the penultimate episode, not the final.) The whole town claps and there are fireworks.

Claudio Loves Mercedes

In the hospital, at Mercedes’ bedside, Claudio tells Mercedes that he is in love with her and asks for a chance at a relationship. She wants to have a little time with her daughters but she will give him a chance to walk with them. They confess mutual love.

Magdalena and Valentin come hand-in-hand to Mercedes Sr.’s bedside. Mercedes gives her blessing to the relationship.

Bea Is Dying

Beatriz is dying. Father Tomas comes and takes her confession. He tells her that she has completed her mission in life by raising Marina to be the strong, courageous, noble woman she is today. After Fr Tomas confesses and blesses her, he tells Becky and Jose that Bea is preparing for God’s final call. Becky visits her beloved sister. Beatriz mentally tells Rebecca not to worry. She summons the doctor who tells her that Beatriz has little time to live. Jose is standing by during this exchange, simply bursting out of his royal blue shirt. Jose had better stop hitting the weights so hard or he is going to need an entirely new wardrobe.

In a close up we note that Beatriz’ makeup makes the actress look pretty rough—her eyebrows are completely unadorned!—so we are not surprised when Beatriz prepares to pass.

Salazar Family

Fully and Ester conspire to get Delfina to leave her entire fortune to Ester, not to be baby Michel as her will currently states.  Ester starts stalking her mother by going to her and confessing how wrong and bad she has been But Ester wants to change! She wants to get her baby back. She will change. Delfina is moved by Ester’s pitiful entreaties and says that she BELIEVES in Ester. She will go to Damian and talk to him on Ester’s behalf.

Meanwhile, we know that Ester’s interest in Michel is financial—if she can get the kid back and prove that he was Ernesto’s son, then she can attempt to get the child’s inheritance.

Courtroom

In a courtroom, somewhere in Mexico, Marina testifies that Hernan kidnapped her and baby Mercedes, and, although she is not an expert on mental matters (you can say that again) she believes that Hernan Saldaña is out of his mind. Marina is wearing metallic gold shorts and a flowered jacket for her day in court but somehow that does not seem to have hurt her credibility, for the jury finds Hernan Saldaña,’culpable’, guilty as charged. Just what those charges were will forever remain a mystery as Televisa appears to be guilty of bad editing and chopping even before Uni got their ‘scissors’ on the Capitulo.

The judge sentences Hernan to 110 years in jail to be served in a maximum security facility for the mentally disturbed. Ursula looks quite stricken but Hernan himself seems unfazed. He is in loose unfaded jeans and a plain white t-shirt and he works his jaw as he is led away.

Some Police Work and, Yawn, Lazaro

More bad editing, again, from Televisa. The music starts out mid-stanza with Christina Aguillera warbling “…ca-da mañ-an-a”. Robles and Damian discuss what will happen to the empacadora. It is in the hands of the authorities right now.

Mayor Olinto and his boys in blue catch Valdivia and Lara as they attempt to make their get away on a bus.  Toribia has the pleasure of arresting these two corrupt dirt bags and he and the good cops lead Valdivia and Lara off to jail.

Now we have another scene with that slicked-back and tedious fool Lazaro and his harpy of a mother, Rosario. She heads off to her room but overhears Laz tell Abigail that tomorrow they will leave Veracruz, forever. And good riddance I say, but Rosy looks shocked to hear of her son’s plans. Laz runs into Fully on the street and his dad gives him the low-down on his no good lying scheming Mother. Finally the boys cuts the apron strings and blames his mother for all his troubles with Lucia.

Fulgencio

Ursula asks her Unkie Fulgencio to help Hernan but he has enough problems of his own. He refuses.

Fulgencio goes to jail to pay his former henchmen, Valdivia and Lara a little visit. They try to talk tough with Fully, but calmly tells them that if they say one word to compromise him he will kill all of the members of their families. Wow.

La Guacamaya Bar

At La Guacamaya the crew of La Tempestad and their girlfriends raise a toast to the fact that all the bad guys in Rrr-Lay-Dee are now in jail. Maybe not, muchachos.
Bea Is Still Dying

Beatriz is still dying. In this scene she says goodbye to Marina. They, and we, review sweet memories of Beatriz’ and Marina’s life together.  Bea blesses Marina and dies. Marina lies down on the bed with her mother and weeps. She prays for her Mother.

Ave Maria plays. Becky and Damian come in to say goodbye to Beatriz. Poor Beatriz keeps swallowing even though she is dead.

Marina tells Magdalena and Valentin that her mother Bea is dead. Marina is glad she is no longer suffering. Mags and Damian comfort Marina with the thought that she will always have the memories of her good mother Bea.

At the hospital, Magdalena, Claudio and Valentin break the news to Mercedes that Beatriz is gone. They beg her to stay calm but she wants to leave the hospital immediately and see Marina and her friend, Beatriz. Magdalena hugs and comforts her mother.

Hernan And the Too-Tight Coat

Hernan, meanwhile, is struggling with his tight white outfit. This time we see him through a white door with a TINY window and a sign reading, ‘No Pase’. He does not seems to be the least bit comfortable in his straitjacket. Perhaps he is claustrophobic. At any rate, he is screaming and throwing himself about his padded cell. He is literally bouncing off the walls as he screams Marina’s name. The white-coated doctors stand in front of the locked door and shake their heads. They have no hope for the poor bastard.

Ester, Ursula, Laz and Abigail

Ester and Ursula take a walk on the Esplanade. Some random women yell at Ester, calling her a liar and Ester yells back. (I must also note, for the record, that Ursula looks fabulous in her one shoulder, cut-out-waist black spandex dress. What a body that woman has). Ester complains that everyone is against her. No duh, Ester.

Thou Bitch-Wolf’s Son*, we yell as we see Lazaro walking through the pueblo, dragging his little black roller bag behind him. Abigail accosts him and asks him to come to her house but Laz does not want to start gossip and he refuses her invitation.

Velorio

In front of Beatrizz’ casket and a room full of mourners, Mercedes mourns her friend, and Marina’s good-mother, Beatriz. Marina calls her , “Mama” and hugs Mercedes. Father Tomas tells the group that they are there to pray to God for the soul of Beatriz, a great woman and a great mother. Father Tomas leads the group in the “our Father”. Back at the house Marina says that the house doesn’t feel the same without her mother in the house. She tells Claudio and Mercedes that they, too, are part of her family. Caludio is delighted that Magdalena is calling him Tio Petrone. Damian says that Beatriz has left her sense of peace on the house, even if she is gone. Claudio makes another joke at Jose’s expense, once again referring to Jose needing his help to find clothes that fit. Damian smiles and says that Claudio is Tio to the entire Pueblo. But Claudio corrects him, and says that Damian is not his nephew. Damian, Capitan Fabre is his son. Awwwwww.

Hernan

Back at the Mexican Federal Hospital for the Criminally Insane, Hernan is still struggling in his straightjacket. I feel for him.

Hernan has a talk with and visit from himself. He decides he needs to calm down to be able to get Marina back. He convinces the psychiatrist to remove his straightjacket—He will play nice. He would like someone to call his girlfriend, Ursula for him…The psychiatrist calls Ursula to say that seeing her would be good for Hernan’s treatment. Huh???? Anyway, Ursula is glad to visit if it will help Hernan. OK, the girl has really lost it. Now she thought bubbles that Hernan will keep his promise to marry her. He will be hers, all hers. Where have we heard this before? Oh, I would be gloating if I was Ursula. Just think, to marry an imprisoned felon, what joy! O frabjous day!

A rapturous Ursula finds Ester drunk out of her mind, still in her robe on the sofa. What is up with you, she asks? Ester is suffering the pains of the fallen narcissist. She was Estercita Salazar, the Queen of Nuestra Señora del Mar, and now slatterns on the street laugh at her. Narcissists so she can leave the damned down. Estercita is so bad that Ursula is afraid to leave her cousin to go visit Hernan. She gets Delfina but Ester does not want to see her mother. Delfina reminds Ester that she is going to change, but a depressed and sodden Ester doesn’t want to hear it. She lies on the floor, sobbing, with an empty bottle partially obscuring her face.

Etc.

Damian and Mercedes discuss getting back the Neptune Fish Plant for Marina and Magdalena. Just then Robles interrupts them. He needs to talk to Damian. Damian agrees to help Robles one more time and he leaves on a secret assignment for Robles. He seeks and finds Zully, or what is left of her and calls Robles to let him know what he has found.

Ursula leaves Ester with Delfina and loads her suitcase in the car. Grab a big beanie, here, folks. She is going to start her life with Hernan. ¿Que que?

Marina grieves and Mercedes tries to comfort her but Marina’s loss is too great. Mercedes is holding Mercedes Jr. in her arms and she reminds Marina that she must be strong for her baby and for love.  Marina agrees to take this moment to be a family with Mercedes and Mags, as things would have been, but for the interference of that maldito, Ernesto Contreras.

Ester is stumbling around the house in PJ’s holding a bottle of tranquilizers. She looks a right mess. She downs a handful of pills with a glass of hooch.

More bad editing. Laz is in the shower (who knows WHAT shower, or just WHERE the shower is located,  when naked Abigail walks in to join him. The prude rushes out of the shower, gets a towel and tells Abi the Obsessed to give him a break.

Meanwhile, Robles visits Delfina and Fulgencio at home. Robles tells them that Ursula is a MURDERER. She killed Zully. Delfina and Fulgencio are shocked, shocked I say. How does Robles know that this is so? We have no idea. We are just the dumb audience. There was no continuity between scenes so we are left to make up our own answers. Fully makes the case that Ursula was manipulated by the eeeevil Hernan Saldaña. Yep, Robles agrees. The puppetmaster, the one pulling Ursula’s strings was Hernan.

Speaking of the devil, Ursula has come to visit Hernan in the asylum. They meet. What we have here is a failure to communicate. He keeps babbling on about his obsession with Marina and she has stars in her eyes at the idea of being Mrs. Hernan Saldaña. He tells her she must help him and she agrees.

Olinto, Robles and Damian meet at the police station. Damian can not believe that Ursula is a MURDERER. Robles says that Zully will be the last victim of Hernan’s trafficking organization. Her sister was found so her death will not be in vain.

Ursula Is Not Playing With A Full Deck Either

OK, Ursula has gone completely round the bend. As she moves in to a tacky, cheap hotel, she muses that this is the beginning of her life together with Hernan. They will be together forever. (How, Ursie? The man is in a lockdown max security psych facility. Are you going to move into a nice little cottage on the sanitarium grounds and live happily ever after as a guest of the Mexican government)? This storyline is preposterous and annoying.

Ester Makes A Bad End

Ester lets herself into Casa Beatriz. Mercedes takes a nap with a sleeping Baby Mercedes in one room while Ester kidnaps Baby Michel from another room and runs out and back to her house. Delfina is home and tries to take Baby Michel away from his drug addled and drunken mother. In the tussle, some money falls to the floor and Delfina discovers that Ester has robbed her! They struggle for control of Michel, Ester pushes her Mother and Delfina falls and hits her head. Ester hits the streets with the baby.

Becky, Magdalena and Marina have all noticed that Baby Michel has been kidnapped a second time. Wow. That kid gets around. Marina calls Damian to tell him that Michel is missing. He figures the kidnapper is Estercita and heads to Casa Salazar. He finds Delfina on the floor—she doesn’t know where Ester was going with the baby! She begs Damian to find them.

Ester is shambling across an empty lot next to one of the half-completed concrete beach-front hotel shells that you sometimes see in Mexican coastal cities. A cute little kid—whom I take to be one of Damian’s little orphans—is playing in the lot when he sees Ester with Baby Michel and runs away. The cute kid, also a smart kid, runs directly to Marina to tell her that he saw Estercita down by the beach carrying a baby. Cute kid also finds Damian and tells him the same.

Ester is stumbling around on a high floor of the incomplete building shell. No, we do not know how she got there. She is WAY too close to the unfenced edge for my comfort and she has Baby Michel in her arms. Yikes. Marina comes along, struggles with Ester and manages to get Baby Michel back. (Recapper sighs with relief). Damian arrives as Ester is teetering on the edge of the ledge.

Marina calls out to Ester to be calm while Damian tries to reason with her. But it is too late. Ester tells Damian that he is not the father of Baby Michel—the baby’s father was Ernesto Contreras. Ester jumps from the building and falls many stories to the ground. She is dead.

Damas y Caballeros:

It has been my pleasure to serve as your Thursday night recapper for La Tempestad. I was lucky enough to be on a great recapping team and I want to offer my appreciation to each of them:
Gloria
Mauricio
Cap'n Sylvia
Madelaine,
and last, but certainly not least
Novela Maven.

The commenting group here was so smart and sassy. I have enjoyed our interactions. I hope to see many of you as we move on to Robo.

Kind Regards To All,

Elna June

Elna June, thank you for your hard work making this TN sound, well, like the literature it ain't.
I will be watching Robo, so I only say thank you and not goodbye as I see you are recapping still on Thursdays, thank goodness!

Loved your descriptions of Hernan. "Perhaps he's claustrophobic" and "Hernan has a talk with and visit from himself." And your reporting of Ursula's plight, right- really redik, I grabbed my most protective titanium beanie for that.

OK, so if Michel is really Ernies then Michel and Hernan are brothers. Scary.

I don't get why Laz is even speaking to Abi,AT ALL, wasn't she outed by Candy to him as someone who extorted guys in some joint they worked together? Or that she was one of Ernie's girls? Can anyone remember that scene, or do we even care?

This capitula must have started 15 minutes early, because when I tuned in Bea was dying at that moment, glad you caught the first few minutes.

Elna June: The Penultimate Storm and the Penultimate (exceptional)Recap. I was amazed at all we missed and was utterly confused at some of the scenes that (as you noted) seemed to come out of no where. Thank you for making this montage of madness make perfect sense. What a wonderful recap you gave us. Thank you for all your diligence and hard work. This was wonderful.

"I guess if you catch the fake belly you will be the next one in Our Lady of the Sea to show up semi-pregnant", "Jose is standing by during this exchange, simply bursting out of his royal blue shirt", "Marina is wearing metallic gold shorts and a flowered jacket for her day in court but somehow that does not seem to have hurt her credibility: and "Fully, but calmly tells them that if they say one word to compromise him he will kill all of the members of their families. Wow. (did Cesar REALLY say that??) ;) were great. Many, many superb lines but ""Hernan has a talk with and visit from himself" was my fav.

I'm a tad confused now as to what I saw and didn't see last night. I gather the random scene of Dam on the phone was after he found Zully's body? Totally perplexed how the Commandante fingered Ursula and spilled the beans to Fully and Delfina.

I felt badly that Ester met such a gruesome end. She killed Ernesto but feel her life as it was, being reviled and shunned was punishment enough. She did not deserve to die so tragically.

Rest in peace Bea...Maria Sorte did an excellent job with the character. Those expressive eyes were haunting.

I can't believe tonight is the finale. So sorry that the time is likely to be spent showing Hernan's last bout of craziness and dealing with Fully and Ursula. Would have liked to have seen more of the happy endings for our beloved Dam and Marina, Jose and Bea and Mags and Valentin. Mercedes and Claudio too!

So will Dam care Ernesto is Michel's padra? Not a whit.

So, who is Zully's sister?

Elna June, thank you again!

Looking forward to tonight and hopefully a few moments of happiness!

Happy Friday all!

Diana

EJ- Fabulous job as always. You made sense of something that didn't make much sense, even before Uni's scissors got to it.

I felt sad for the way Ester ended. I was worried for the little baby during the struggle with Delfina. They had to choreograph that really well, and I'm sure Laura had an iron grip on the little guy, but it still worried me. Was glad they switched to a doll for the Ester-Marina struggle.

Ursula must be as loony as Hernan, because her motivation makes no sense. The show went long, and the last scene was of Hernan attacking the nurse/orderly assigned to him. The one who suspiciously has the same height, build, and facial stubble as Hernan. I predicted a switch the first time they showed the guy speaking with the doc.

Looks like the last episode will be lots of madness as the three remaining villains make their last stands.

Bea's passing was sad, but we have been expecting it from the first episode. I'm glad Delfina gets to live and love her grandson. She and Laz will likely be Michel's only remaining blood relatives.

Thank you, Elna June, for your incredible recap. You skillfully wove the missing threads into a wonderful synopsis.

Loved your comment: Marina says (in court) that she's not an expert in mental matters (you can say that again). Also love re: Ursula does she expect to live happily ever after as a guest of the Mexican government.

I too felt sad that Ester met such a tragic end. All credit to the actress. Laura Carmine manages to make you feel for her regardless of how much trouble she's created.

I was thinking that they should have had both babies in the same room with Mercedes while the three of them took a nap. But Mercedes probably would have had a mini breakdown had another baby been stolen from her on her watch.

dear Elna June..thank you for this last recap of LT. Every weekday morning , I look forward to a least a quick stop by here at Caraycaray to peek at the recap and see if any friends are up as early as I am ! Then, throughout my day or after a long day , I am anxious to drop in again to read the recap and comments and add my own thoughts to the community observances. Your recaps, EJ, make me feel as if you are sitting across the table from me sipping something warm and we are laughing and snarking together. See you for Robo. YAy.

P.s. My very helpful Ipad decided to change "snarking" to "snarling." Teehee. I think that I should give my Ipad a name because it likes to help me write my comments....like a friend who gives a lot of unwanted..and sometimes wrong...advice.

EJ:

Marvelous, gem of a recap, Thank you so much! You wove a wonderful recap out of the torn threads that UNI showed.

I am glad they found Zully. I thought that storyline would have ended as one of those unanswerable danglers we usually get at the end of a TN.

Bea's passing was very sad. I am glad she was able to talk at the end and that Marina got to say goodbye.

Ursully has gone around the bend. I bet her and Herny cooked something up. I don't get what she thinks is gonna happen either.

I didn't expect Pester to go that way either. I think in the end, she realized DamFab was neva gonna love her or be with her, she couldn't handle the truth. At least Marina did grab bebe Michel out of her arms. I don't think DamFab will give a fig about who Michel's bio Papa is. Michel has always been his son of the heart.

Thanks again EJ for all your hard work on this TN, and the marvelous recaps you have done and looking forward to seeing you on "Robo"

Tks EJ
Thankfully this TN is dying a quick death before we all end up in the manicomio with Hernán. Haven't been watching, what's the point since they have cut it to shreds. The great recaps tell me all I need to know.
The quick end keeps it out of the worst novelas category.

La reina del sur is fantastic.

Ahhhhh...my favorite way to spend a Friday morning, a cup of strong black tea and a recap brimming with EJ. I always enjoy your unique and astute observations. Comparing the preggy pillow to a wedding garter was pure genius. I wondered what it reminded me of!

What made me laugh the hardest? Perhaps it was "what we have here is a failure to communicate". Indeed! I also laughed at Bea's "completely unadorned eyebrows" being a harbinger of her fate. But I nearly fell of my chair at "Thou Bitch Wolf's Son", snort! Such a handy phrase to keep in one's arsenal, and so well-used here.

EJ, I admire your skill in making sense of last night's mess. I do believe the editing in this episode was the worst so far. It was epically bad.

I was somewhat put off that bebe Mercedes was snug in her crib while bebe Michel was sitting on a bed, surrounded only on three sides by pillows. I'm no mommy but is that any way to leave a child? Juarever, it made things easier for Pester, and it made Michelito look a bit of a little man-about-town as he casually rested on one elbow.

EJ, I'm so glad you will be continuing to recap Thursday nights. Yay!

Susanlynn, was it you who asked about my future plans? I plan to head back down to Mexico as soon as we get our house emptied and rented. Our boat waits for us there. It will be another month or so, but I fear I will be too busy to recap or watch much TV. But I WILL you all of you on the patio. A girl needs to rest sometime!

Pester's death was sad, but as we noted before, her existence was inconvenient in the extreme. Imagine poor Dam and Marina having to deal with that nut job their entire lives? Nope, that only happens in real life.

Ursully's plunge into insanity sure was fast. Must be some kind of TN record. The Feds had already suspected her of shooting someone because her confiscated gun had been recently shot. I don't think they ever believed her lame excuse of target practice. Maybe Marcelino helped them along? There was a little scene where Toribio offered Marcelino a job at the police, but Marcelino declined, saying he was carrying guilt that wouldn't allow him be in such a position. He had to make things right first.

The terrariums survived another night!

My dear Elna June,

"The Penultimate Storm" = The Perfect Title! Hah!

You have taken these threads of madness and disjunction and given us an entertaining narrative that actually makes sense. (Pues, dentro de lo que cabe…)

--I loved the image of the foam belly being tossed to the crowd like a garter at a wedding (though did you notice how Ursula stepped back to avoid it, as if it were radioactive?)

--That Marina's wearing gold shorts and flowered jacket did not hurt her credibility as a witness (The wardrobe has deteriorated in recent episodes, no? Poor Becky especially looks like she's been shopping at Tarts 'R Us.)

--another scene with that slicked-back and tedious fool Lazaro and his harpy of a mother

--Poor Beatriz keeps swallowing even though she is dead.

--…the pains of the fallen narcissist. She was Esthercita Salazar, The Queen…and now slatterns on the street laugh at her.

But my favorite EJ line this time was yours and Will's:

Thou Bitch-Wolf's Son, we yell
(Maybe we weren't yellling it before, but we are now!)

Thank you for bringing your wit and grace and vast intelligence to this forum. I love the way your imagination touches and influences the whole blog. (Have you noticed how everyone started talking about "tropes" around here after your famous piece?)

It has been a pleasure having this conversation with you. I look forward to continuing it on Robo.

Love,
NovelaMaven

"Imagine poor Dam and Marina having to deal with that nut job their entire lives? Nope, that only happens in real life."

Ain't that the truth, Sylvia. Maybe that's why we love telenovelas so much.

Outstanding Elna June. What a great job you did with these remaining few episodes.

The terrariums were reprieved? If so, perhaps that's the biggest crime of all. Maybe Crazy Hernán has been hearing the call of the soil mix, and has to escape for that last little bit of unfinished business.

Sylvia,

"There was a little scene where Toribio offered Marcelino a job at the police..."

Why isn't Marcelino in jail? Cleanup after murders isn't a crime?

Carlos

Cap'n, where do you go in Mex?.
I would like to spend 4 to 6 wks there, but not sure where to go. I really loved Guanajuato but I don't want to return to the same place. I don't want to go to gringo land & I want a place to do a lot of site seeing. I would like to rent a small house or apt as my base. I would value your suggestions.

Carlos, I wondered about Marcelino running around free, too. In fact, I recall him telling his primo Torbi that he saw Hernan kill those two thugs, and Torbi advising Marc to go to the police, Marc saying he was skeered 'cause he was "stuck in the wolf's mouth", so Torbi told him to watch his back. Maybe killing bad guys doesn't count? Well, I'm guessing he will either end up in jail (short term) for keeping mum about Zully, cut a deal for telling all, or just not be mentioned again.

Novela Maven reminded me, great title EJ. Wonderful twist on The Perfect Storm. Buen hecho!

Variopinta, we spent most of our time sailing in the Sea of Cortez, Baja side. We did do a stint where we sailed across from Cabo to La Cruz (north of Puerto Vallarta). This time we want to go directly from La Paz to the west coast of mainland Mexico, maybe down as far as Zihuatanejo? Not sure yet. Mr. Sharkbait likes to surf.

Cheryl New Mex loves Oaxaca, has been there several times, and that is some place I would love to visit. I have heard from many people that it is worth seeing.

If you go to the Puerto Vallarta area you might consider getting a little place in La Cruz. It's still very quaint and there are many places to visit in the surrounding area, beach towns (Sayulita), old mining towns up in the mountains, etc.

Since we travel by boat we are limited to places where we can drop anchor or go into a marina.

I have been to Guanajuato once and loved it. I would like to go back sometime.

Tks Cap'n
Oaxaca is one place I've been thinking about, also Puebla & Chiapas. I travel by myself, so have to be smart about things.

EJ -- Thanks for this wonderful recap!

I didn't want Bea to die. I was hoping she would survive. It was so sad to see her go.

Pester's end was sad too. But as mentioned it had to happen so DamFab and Marina could live happily ever after.

Was glad to see Valdivia and Lara getting locked up. Thank goodness the writers did not let them get away with all they had done.

Man, DamFab did most of Robles' job. Not only did he help capture Hernan but he also provided him with the agenda with all the names of the men involved in the organization and thus helped the organization be taken down. Then he goes and discovers where Zully's body is.

Loved seeing Hernan in that straightjacket and in a padded room. Ursula is stupid stupid stupid. I'll never understand what she sees in Hernan. She knows he nuts and yet insists on being with him.

Laz/JazLu/Abi -- I can't believe they have dragged out this storyline until the final episode. Why Mejia why?? Why must you torture us this way??

Another thread that seems to have unraveled is the fact that Herny switched B's pills. Did anyone ever discover that he did that ? Did that speed up God's call to poor B ?

Did they cut out the explanation of how Robles knew that Ursullied killed Zuly or was it never addressed ? I guess only three people knew that Urs did the deed.....Urs, Herny, and Marcelino.

Sylvia...Happy Sailing to you. are you going to record Black Sails the PIRATE miniseries on Starz? It starts in JAN.

Variopinta, I have never been to Mexico, but my older daughter went to San Miguel for a wedding and loved it. I think that it is a quaint colonial town. One of my best friends is a Spanish teacher who often goes to Mexico in the summer. Sometimes, she travels alone, and she assures me that you just have to be mindful of where you are. My Mexican student is from Jalisco , and when I asked him about safety , he told me that many places in Mexico are perfectly safe. Also, I remember that Carlos and the lovely Linda went somewhere in Mexico a little while ago and loved it...cannot remember the name.

Sylvia...I laughed at your line about living with nut jobs in real life. How very true. At the moment , the particular nut job that I have been dealing with is keeping a low profile. I pray it continues. Ojala. Dec 3 is the custody hearing. , so please keep your fingers crossed that he does not get custody every other week instead of every other weekend. It takes three of us to get one child to first grade and the other to preschool 10 miles away, so I do not know how he could handle that on his own when he has to leave for work about 6 am. And cannot afford help or daycare.

Susanlynn, I admit I was thinking of your situation when I made that comment. (Not that I don't know plenty of other examples, unfortunately.) Please let us know how things go in Dec. When it comes to the crazies, sometimes you just have to be stronger and last longer than they do. Easier said than done, I know.

As for pirates, I fear I will have no home and no TV for recording that series. Maybe when I get back I'll be able to watch it on Hulu or something. Alas, no Hulu in Mexico.

Amigos:

Thank you for your kind words regarding the recap.

A little introspection follows:

The editing and chopping of the La Tempestad story has taken all the wind out of my sails. (That metaphor is for Cap'n Sylvia and Madelaine). There is so much confusion in the show, so little continuity, that I feel a bit bewildered as to what to discuss here.

Also, the hours and hours that it has taken to keep up with double or triple capitulos have taken a bit of a toll.

I am trying to decide just what I have found most disheartening in the demise of La Tempestad. I know that I am not the only person on the Board who feels this way.

I think that the form of a telenovela is a more delicate than we might suppose. It works because we agree to accept the arc of a love story, with interesting secondary characters, and a 'happy ending' most of the time. We accept a bag of tropes, some cultural givens, such as suffering, and that the characters will act foolishly as they cope with the improbable situations into which they are placed by the writers. The Perils of Pauline serial storylines work, I think, because of the safe suspense—although secondary characters are grist for the story mill, the protagonistas are not going to die early in the show. A viewer can stay 'safely' emotionally bonded with the good guys and sometimes the anti-heroes or outright villains as well.

When the story loses continuity, when we no longer have to strain to catch the clues as to where we are being led as viewers, then I think we lose interest. The serial, with it's plot hanging devices at the end of most shows, is not interesting to us because we can longer REASONABLY anticipate and share the experiences, sorrows and joys of life with the characters in the show.

The telenovela is increasing in popularity in the United Sates. William Levy was a recognizable figure to Americans because of his exposure on 'Dancing With the Stars'. Regular television doses of a now familiar, impossibly handsome, charming and athletic actor is a recipe for viewership, I think. In addition, Levy has become a good actor, not just another pretty face.

Univision's squandering of this opportunity to build telenovela viewership in the US seems utterly unwise.. As recappers, our volunteer efforts to share the fun and learning available in the telenovela are engaging. We watch the enthusiasm grow for a show and join in a community of people to create a shared experience. We are offering our skills in writing and translation—however modest these may be—free of charge, to make the medium more accessible to a broader audience.

In analyzing my experience with the abbreviated version of La Tempestad, the dissection of the show has left me feeling a bit like chopped liver.

Tonight we can look forward to the pleasure of Novela Maven's wonderful recap of the Gran Final.

That means that despite the challenges of La Tempesatd—for recappers and viewers alike—we will finish the series on a very high note. I am looking forward to our weekend commenting as we say goodbye to La Tempestad and prepare to say hello to 'Robo' on Monday.

Elna June

Elna June - Terrific recap. My favorite line: "Marina is wearing metallic gold shorts and a flowered jacket for her day in court but somehow that does not seem to have hurt her credibility..."

Sad to see both Bea and Pester go. Mercedes seemed to speak an awful lot about herself at Bea's service, but I'll let it go. Pester wanted no parts of Michelito, so she could've just left town never to be seen again.

Did we ever get to see Jose shirtless? Maybe Claudio will buy him a bigger shirt and he'll have to change in front of us.

Ursula's willingness to stay in a dive motel and run away with a broke Hernan makes no sense. But then she knows the police are on her trail for the murder of Zully, so maybe she just figures "what the hell, might as well go out in a blaze of crazy."

Beautifully written Elna June! I had a lot of good laughs along the way..... Thanks! Gertie

Will Ursullied and Herny become the Mexican Bonnie and Clyde dying together in a rain of bullets ?

As for the manly Jose and his too tight shirt, he appears to be attempting to put 10 pounds of manly muscle into a five pound bag ?

Poor Michel! kidnapped twice. Over at CI, we have had quite enough of the dimwitted but studly dad who has kidnapped his young daughter twice in addition to not being very concerned about his missing infant son who was left in the great outdoors overnight by his wacked out mother. Ahh, the wonderful world of suspended disbelief that is the telenovela.

There have been many recent comments regarding the quality of these telenovelas, especially the drastic cutting of scenes and mixing of several episodes into one.

I am relatively new at watching these shows.

Can anyone tell me which novelas are considered of high quality and which a loyal viewer might benefit from watching again (if that were possible). For example, I totally enjoyed Amor Bravio and even Amores Verdaderos. They were both very engaging and fun to watch.

EJ:

You have this wonderful gift of putting exactly how this experience was for us all with La Tempestad. Thanks so much and I heartily concur.

Thank you for this recap, EJ!

I too am sad that Bea and Pester met their end. Pester definitely seemed a mess throughout the episode. Fully and Fina are in for a sad surprise.

Looks to me like Ursula has a dark cloud looming over her head. Obviously Hernan doesn't care about her and seems willing to get rid of her somehow so he has a better chance with Marina (or so he thinks),

Looking forward to the finale tonight. I'll miss seeing WL on my TV.

Cap'n:

I will miss you heartily, but please dew drop in when you get the chance to say Hiddy Ho on Robo.

That Ester didn't love her son was painfully obvious when she took him from Marina's house. It seemed as if she didn't care which baby she took, she just wanted one of Damian's kids. When she saw that Mercedes was in the room with the baby girl, she went looking for the boy. When she was reaching for him, she said, "Well, Bastardo (!!), looks like YOU'RE the one out of luck." What loving mother calls her own baby a bastard?

Thank you so much, EJ! So appreciated your recap last night and throughout this series. My favorites have been said but I have to highlight:

"although she is not an expert on mental matters (you can say that again)"

Classic EJ!

And Mauricio, ISTA that it is crazy Mejia has saved Jaz-Lu to the very end.

If baby Michel is old enough to be sitting up, he is for sure old enough to be NOT left unattended in a room on a bed for gosh sakes!

I have loved this novella, despite all the merciless editing. And I have loved the recaps even more!

Thank you, EJ!

Susanlynn --

Michelito was kidnapped four times:

1. As a newborn after the police raid on Ernesto.
2. When Pester and Ursula took him from Mercedes' mansion.
3. When Ursula took him to give him to Hernan who gave him to Ernesto.
4. Just now when Pester took him to get back at Damian.

Poor Michelito. It is a good thing he's still a baby and won't remember all this madness.

He most definitely should have not been left unattended. What were Marina, Becky, and Mercedes thinking???

Susanlynn, oh my, four times. I had to laugh when Marina told Becky and Mags that Michel was missing, and Becky exclaimed "Otra vez!?! Yes Becks, yet again.

Mauricio...UHoh..If there is a quiz at the end of this novela, I'd better sit next to you so I can copy. I am not paying attention. Gee, Little Lupita on CI has only been kidnapped twice ...by her dim dad. Not to be confused with Damdad here on LT.

As for Michel being left unattended on the bed...yikes. Does anyone recall the scene in Alborada in which Don Luis takes Hippolita out of her room to his room leaving their little son awake on the bed with a whole bunch of candles burning and the maid asleep on a cot...YIKES. It was a very hot scene of Amor in Don Luis's room, but I kept thinking...Hey, you left your baby in the other room with candles burning...maybe you should wake the maid up before you start getting busy.

GoBlueFan...my favs are the historical novelas..Alborada, Amor Real, and Pasion..all starring TBLMOE Fernando Colunga who is currently in the tragically unfunny comedy PEAM. I also liked Destilando Amor starring Eduardo Yanez which describes the agave industry.

So in response to Gobluefan's question, for me Alborada is up there in the tops. I also liked Cuando Me Enamoro for many reasons, but the standouts are: 1) it took place in the wine country and 2) the heroine was not a wimp. Amor Real is excellent too.

On Telemundo I very much liked Zorro, La Espada Y La Rosa, and Dona Barbara.

My favorite tns are Alborada, Amor Bravio and Cuando Me Enamore.

Anon:
I completely concur with your favs and would add these few:

Mañana Es Para Siempre -Great villains, esp Lucero, fine protagonists in Sylvia Navarro and Fernando Colunga and a bit of a mystery story.

I liked Teresa, even though I am not a Boyer fan. A dark and unusual TN.

Speaking of dark, ENDA was the darkest TN I have ever seen with Letitia Caldeon as the most eeevil woman on earth.

EJ

EJ, excellent analysis of the butchering of this telenovela and why it was frustrating at the end. I also felt exhausted after recapping the chopped episodes. But then I would feel rejuvenated the next day because of all the gracious feedback.

Great comments today! This is such an observant and humorous group. It's a joy hanging out with you on the patio.

BTW, I am heading out of town now for a friend's 80th birthday party, so will check back in with everyone tomorrow afternoon.

Have a great Friday and a great weekend!

Elna June, what is the full name of EDNA? And is Letitia Calderon the evil witch in Amor Bravio?

Thx!

Marta, ENDA = En Nombre Del Amor. And yes, LC was Isadora aka "Hissadora" in AB.

I thought AB was much darker than ENDA. With LC and then adding Cesar Evora to the mix of villains. I don't think you can get much darker than that.

LC and CE were so much fun together. They both seem to have perverse fun playing evil characters.

Elna June, thanks for another powerful recap. I especially appreciated your analysis of the post traumatic syndrome experienced by the recappers here. I applaud the effort made to give us the complete story of each episode. Thanks to all the recappers.

I watched most of this TN and enjoyed it. The cast was good and lots of fun was had with our Sweet William and his manly musculature. He was also more intelligent than some galans (Octavio, I'm looking at you).

I don't understand why Univision felt the need to cut it unless it was for venganza of some sort.

Ester's end was both satisfying and sad. I think this suicide jump was from the tallest structure, unless I missed one elsewhere. I look forward to Hernan's and Ursula's final fate.

Elna June,

Thanks so much for all of your hard work recapping this TN for us, and for making sense of all the deleted scenes. Damn you Uni! I would have been lost without all of your recaps that were descriptive, cohesive, full of thought and witty.

I saw last night's butchering of an episode, and could not believe all the loose ends left for tonight. I think Uni should have given the finale a 2-hour slot. But alas, we are left to piece together another episode after tonight.

Again, thank you for your re-caps. I would LOVE to comment more, but I am out of time.

Back to work...Hasta manana!

Thanks, TF (Anon). Always great to hear about a good TN from all of you experts!

Tks Susanlynn, I want all suggestions. One of my tours while in Guanajuato was to San Miguel Allende & Dolores Hidalgo (city of el grito). From just the short time in both places, I realized I had made the best choice. While Guanajuato is the capital of the state, same name, it much more quaint than San Miguel & seemed to me much smaller, and much more beautiful than DH.

Another thing important to me, since I am up there in years, is ease of getting there. I'm not spending 24 hrs to get there. I wanted to go to Zacatecas but there is a 3 hr bus trip & I haven't dealt with Mex buses. I have heard they are way better than Greyhound though.

There are so many wonderful historic sites in & around DF, but not sure I want the hustle, bustle, pollution, & I'm sure more expensive, but my latino friends tell me I should go there.

The people in Mex are just wonderful, so helpful. I really love the country. So sad they have the brutal narcotraficantes, that spoil the Northern part.

Keep your suggestions coming amigos.

You're welcome, Marta. And Vivi, I agree. I think CE and LC are naturally good at playing villains.

I agree too, Vivi. LC and CE are brilliant at it!

My favorite villain is Guillermo García Cantú, he and Diana Bracho are the only ones that got me through FELS. They were great in a piece of crap novela.
The villains are the meatiest roles.

Again, no time to watch or really comment. Computer/tv room open to the skies as windows replaced and frigid etc.

But zooming through the comments, saw your wonderful analysis of why chopping up this show was so wrong-headed. I hope you will send that as a letter to Televisa or Univision or to whomever it concerns, Elna June. It was a beautifully clear statement of the downside of their butchery.

EJ thanks for your recap and I look forward to seeing you on Robo. Your statement about the downside of psycho edits was great. As Judy said, you must send it to Uni/Televisa.

Sylvia enjoy your travels and look forward to you popping in.

Sorry Mr. Levy, I liked you in the Angel one in Mexico City. BUt I didn't know better then.
