Lo Que La Vida Me Robo # 3-11/20/13: More Avoidance Issues for Jose Luis, More Jewelry For Juventino, More Scheming for Graciela, and a Few Yearning Looks for Monserrat From Alejandro

RECAP BY JULIA R.

Hola! I'm Julia R and will be recapping every other Wed--sharing duties with Eli. I have something very important to confess before we begin: although I've been reading and loving Caray Caray! for a while, I'm actually a little embarrassed to admit that I'm a recapping virgin! Hope you won't mind the pun, but, yes, this is my first time ever, folks. Given the expertise on my excellent recapping team, I've got a lot to live up to, but I promise to do my best--some scenes have been combined because there was so much and to keep the flow going. I hope I didn't miss anything. Let's get started!

The old and a little new: Hacienda Mendoza. A nervous but excited Monserrat in a fetching little midriff-baring number that should be the envy of step squads across America runs to the door of her casa to let in her secret novio, José-Luis, whom she is hoping on this day will finally work up the nerve to talk to her father about their relationship. She has already told her father that Cabo Álvarez wants to speak to him and J-L was supposed to be waiting outside while she prepared Papa for the chit chat. However, poor Monserrat opens the door to find not J-L at all but actually Bachelor # 2--Guzmancito! (Sorry, I meant Alejandro Almonte, but I couldn't resist one shout out to my beloved Amores Verdaderos; I miss El Capitan Fabre and the LT crew, too, but am also very happy to see Sebastián Rulli back at the 9 PM time slot!)

Alejandro recognizes her immediately as the cute, blonde girl who threw her arms around him by accident on the beach and is muy impactado, to say the least. She seems to recognize him, too, but couldn't care less. She asks him what he wants and he introduces himself and asks for Admiral Mendoza, but she lies and says her father isn't home as she wants Papa to be free to talk to Cabo Alvarez as soon as he appears. It would be better for Ale to come back some other day, she tells him. Unluckily for her (or maybe lucky in the long run!) her father just happens to shout out and she is BUSTED for lying! Alejandro seems confused and a little hurt, but just walks on in and introduces himself to Lauro who, upon hearing his name, asks if Ale is a relative of Benjamin Almonte. Monserrat finds time to reminds her father that he is supposed to be talking to Cabo Alvarez right now and her father says sure, sure, but where is he? Coming, she insists. Then let him know when the Cabo arrives and in the meantime, Lauro will talk to El Señor Almonte in the study.

Garden of said Hacienda Mendoza Monserrat goes on a restrained tear looking for J-L. She finally spies him lurking around the back of the garden. Where were you? she wants to know. He says he hurried away because a guy came up and he thought it might be her brother. She says no way--just someone who wanted to talk to her father, though neglecting to tell him anything about the beach hugging incident. He wants to know who it was (a premonition, perhaps) but she's all, NO TENGO IDEA. He wants to back out and return another day, but she insists. Into the house they go.

Where at the same time in the study: Alejandro and Lauro have been having a friendly and gentile conversation about sordid events like the death of El Señor Almonte the first, Lauro's surprise that Alejandro is Benjamin's son since Lauro had no idea B was ever married! He wasn't of course, but that doesn't mean….. Without more explanation the very courtly Lauro gets it and doesn't press Alejandro for details….unlike a lot of other people in the episode! The conversation moves on to the the real reason for A's visit: he wants to buy a plot of land that the Mendozas own. It's next to his family's factory and seems unused and he would like to buy it to grow what I think will be a leather factory run on a very socially conscious business model. Lauro tells him the land is not his to sell. It's actually owned by his hija Monserrat! He goes to get her to see if she is interested in selling and while he's out of the room, our hero, newly aware of the name of the blond girl who was lurking in his pupil the episode before, says her name out loud to himself with considerable gusto.

Her delight for him is not as obvious--actually, at this point it doesn't exist. She wants her father to talk to J-L but Lauro says if it's not urgent, he'd prefer to wait to another time. J-L seems eager for any excuse to avoid this conversation, and goes off while Monserrat follows her father to the study. Lauro introduces them and Ale seems very pleased to be shaking her hand and gives her a very significant-sounding pleased to meet you in Spanish; she, on the other hand, gives him a stare down for having interrupted her plans for J-L. Lauro explains about Ale's desire to buy the plot of land her auntie Marta left her. She immediately says NO WAY. The father is surprised, saying the land is abandoned. Ale asks again politely, saying he'll pay whatever, but again she says forget it--She's NOT INTERESTED IN MONEY (unlike a lot of people in her family, I should add) It all seems over, so very polite Alejandro excuses himself, though not without a look of longing for heroine who at this point gives him nothing in return and seems only capable of thinking about the other side of this burgeoning love triangle.

Moving on to the foyer of Hacienda Mendoza: Graciela and Carlotta enter the house with G. insulting C. about her lack of a brain and some quarrel about some sheets/something dinner for beneficiaries (this was fast and I missed a little of this) but anyway it's not important because what's really important is that Alejandro appears at the same moment and is muy impactado for the second time that day now to see that Graciela, the wife of Lauro, is the same woman who was the lover of his father. She recognizes him, too, but they hide all this well as Lauro introduces everyone. Carlotta exclaims her surprise about Benjamin's recent death, but, hey, it didn't matter much anyway since everyone knew he was awful. Lauro admonishes Carlotta for being insensitive, but Alejandro doesn't seem to mind much since she speaketh only the truth. He finally leaves the house and afterwards, there is a lot of speculation in the family Mendoza about how no one knew Benjamin was married or had a son and how did Ale come to be his ONLY and UNIVERSAL HEIR. Lauro tells them he doesn't care to know the specific details, as it's a private matter, but thank goodness Carlotta and Graciela have more inappropriate curiosity. They are going to ask around. Carlotta then proves she does indeed have the best brain so far in the capitulo by being the only person so far to comment that Alejandro is, well, one of the most handsome men in all of Novella-land!

In the study again, Lauro now chastises Monserrat not only about her stubbornness for not selling the land but about her grosero or crude (love that work in Spanish) behavior to Alejandro. She doesn't care--she's not selling. Graciela enters in the middle of this to ask what Alejandro wanted and is angry to learn that Monserrat won't sell when they need the money. Monserrat walks out and later Graciela riffs on how much she can't stand Monserrat's attitude and that tries to convince Lauro to help her intervene and force Monserrat to marry Sebastian so the Mendoza family will be saved from ruin. Lauro once again vows that he's not going to force Monserrat to marry for interest and that his daughter is not for sale!!!! Something tells me she's not listening.

Town Square of Agua Azul: Once again, Monserrat is upset that J-L won't talk to her father. His lack of forthrightly manliness in this makes her doubt him. Once again, he suggests that it's not that he's afraid, it's just that he thinks, What's the point? Her family will never accept a no-name like him. Once again, she insists that her father will relent when he knows how much she loves J-L. It's either lots of kissing for these two or another round of this same conversation. Let's hope something more happens soon.

In other news for other characters over a couple of scenes: DIM-itrio finally gets his beat-up butt/face (which has recovered nicely) over to Bruno's to beg for more time to pay his debt and also to rip Bruno for being a lousy loan shark--he's got some nerve, that D, trashing the person he owes. Bruno says to lay off since he's been working his whole life. D says it's more like robbing from the Almonte factory his whole life. Anyway, Bruno insists that the only thing he'll accept now from Bruno if he can't pay the money back now is a promissory note for the money WITH INTEREST signed by Dim's father, Lauro. In addition, as security, Bruno also wants the deed to the Hacienda Mendoza. Dim is very upset and asks Bruno, Are you crazy? But Bruno won't back down.

A Slight Change of Pace: More Arguing but this time at the Hacienda Almonte:
The cowboys are fighting about work and having to give the cows vaccines according to Alejandro's orders. Juventino doesn't want to take orders from anyone save his beloved former patron (NOT) and basically he's told he better learn to accept that Alejandro is now boss or Juventino will regret it.

Hacienda of Bitter Recriminations (a.k.a. Hacienda Mendoza) Dim and Graciela lay into each other about how selfish each thinks the other is, though mostly Graciela is winning. She tells Dim he spends too much and does too little. He attempts to trash her for loving her luxuries, too, but she's back at him fast. For example, he shouldn't have left the Naval Academy (along with NovellaMaven, I'm glad he did so we don't have to endure any scenes there like in LT) but he insists he isn't the type of guy to take orders from anyone. Anyway, this goes on for a bit but basically what he wants is money from her to get out of the bind with Bruno. She says no way--he's on his own this time. Which leaves him no choice but to……….

Now Evening. DIMLY Lit Hacienda Mendoza within which DIM is up to no good and steals the keys to the family safe to get the deed to the family Hacienda Bruno demanded as security against the DIM one's debt. Back at chez Bruno briefly, DIM brings the documents, but busy Bruno can't stand DIM and wants to make sure the signature on the promissory note is authentic since he doesn't trust Dim (of course, it's not) Dim promises it is but Bruno vows he won't return the deed to the house until he's gotten all this money back. Bruno is is a bad mood not only because of this but because previously Alejandro had asked to see all the books for the factory to make sure all was in order.

Pretty Town Casa of Alejandro: Ale sits at a computer, no doubt running spreadsheets for his plans for his socially conscious business projects. Margarita the housekeeper comes in and says that if he plans to stay for a while then they need more employees in the house. He says he isn't used to having luxuries but do whatever makes her life easier. He then asks her what she knows about Bruno, and she confirms what Ale already suspects and worse: Bruno is not only no good, but he is probably no doubt a mafioso, too. He lends money to folks at high rates and then beats them up when they don't pay. Bad Bruno!

Hacienda Mendoza: Tia Carlotta has got the goods from some neighbors on Alejandro and yes, he is the son and UNIVERSAL HEIR of Benjamin Almonte. Carlotta and Graciela in some Jane-Austenesque chisme about how it's a truth universally acknowledge that a recently recognized illegitimate heir to a hacienda and fortune must be in want of a wife and couldn't this be a good thing for Monserrat? Graciela seems to have gotten an idea from this and gets up to go out, refusing to tell Carlotta what she's up to.

Car of Graciela: On her way to somewhere, Graciela's car stops suddenly and who should climb in the back seat with her but Juventino. (He'd gone missing earlier at Hacienda Almonte) Anyway, he proceeds to tell G. that he now knows who she is and where she lives and if she wants to maintain her image as a women of the highest principles with her family and friends then she better give him something or her secret of begin the longtime lover of Benjamin Almonte may just not rest in un-peace with him, but be spilled by Juventino. She gets angry at him for attempting blackmail and screams what does he expect since Benjamin didn't leave her a red peso! However, by the end he gets his point across, and she finally gives him one of her gold bracelets, thereby allowing him to add to his collection of nefariously gained jewelry.

In the kitchen of Hacienda Almonte Maria laments again that Alejandro has gone away and worries that things will change between them. Dominga reminds her to quit chasing after Ale since it's clear her only see her as an amiga, but Maria won't stand for that and throws a little fit. A little later, she has a glimmer of hope when Ale actually calls the house…. but only to speak to Victor, whom he needs immediately in Agua Azul.

Hacienda Mendoza: Monserrat's newly married friend Nadia has just returned from her honeymoon and come for some chat. Tia Carlotta opines that she hopes M. will take a page of Nadia's LOVE book and get married soon and not be an old maid like Tia herself. M and N talk about the honey moon--or rather, M wants N to tell her details--is she pregnant yet? No, Nadia says Pedro wants to wait and gives the slightest hint that all is not well in her married life. She seems to have grown a tad cynical and says that love as they imagined doesn't really exist. Pedro treats her well, though. She and and M were too romantic. Anyway, she does ask after Monse and J-L and M. says they're doing fine and all will be peachy as soon as J-L talks to her father, who will accept her love for a poor sailor. What about her mother? Delusional M insists the mother will play along if the father agrees.

Town Casa de Alejandro: Bruno appears and tries to pull a fast one on Alejandro by admitting that the account books of the factory are not current, but no worries, because he, Bruno, has everything in order in his mind and can tell Alejandro anything he wants to know. Alejandro says again he wants the books and if Bruno can't find them, he (Ale) will go and look for them. Luckily for Bruno, the doorbell rings and it's Graciela. Ale asks everyone to leave since it's clear he knows he's in for a doozy of a conversation. Graciela launches right in saying she wasn't sure the day before but now she knows he's the same guy who was a servant when she visited Benjamin on his death bed to troll for money (she didn't say that, but we all know) She wants to know how a servant suddenly became UNIVERSAL HEIR. He's back at her, wondering how the supposed respectable wife of Señor Mendoza was the lover of Ale's father for so many years. Nearly embarrassed, she claims it was the worst mistake of her life to hook up with Benjamin--claims she only did it because she was lonely and her husband was away at sea. A. stops her before she goes only basically telling her it's TMI for him and that her private life is her own, and he won't say a thing. She thanks him for being a confidante, but he stops that fast and says he has no interest in being her confidante, he is just being a gentleman. She then throws it back at him about being a servant, but honest guy that he is, he has nothing to hide and fully admits he is just a bastardo of Don Benjamin and the only reason he is the UNIVERSAL HEIR is because Don B. felt guilty at the final moment of life and left A everything. And his mother? She's dead, Ale says sadly. G. seems to be taking it all in for future evil doing.

Hacienda Mendoza: Tia Carlotta and Monserrat are having some quality time together, discussing Nadia and love in general. M. notes that her friend Nadia seems sad about something--in a later creepy scene we meet her marido Pedro and begin to see why. Tia says she wants M. to find love like N and not be an arrimoda like Auntie Carlotta herself--this means something like a hanger-on. M insists Tia C. is not an arrimoda, but still Tia Carlotta is on about men and then suggest to M. that she consider that hunk-o Alejandro. Me wondereth why Tia Carlotta is being so generous and not hoping for Ale for herself, but she seems to be a good character who knows her place in telenovela hierarchy, and so gives up her I LIKED HIM FIRST rights. (I'm hoping that for this sacrifice, there will be some lovin' somewhere in this show for Auntie Carlotta) Needless to say, M. in not interested and claims she doesn't like Alejandro because he is stuck up.

Mean Streets of Agua Azul: Alejandro happens to see Monserrat walking purposefully in the street and still seems smitten. She either doesn't see him or does and just ignores him and walks on about her bid-ness. Ale has other matters to attend to anyway, as he has come to have yet another exchange with Bruno about the account books for the factory only this time he has no more patience and tells Bruno the game is up and that even though he (Ale) is no accountant any idiot could see that Bruno's been robbing the factory for years--and doing all other types of mean things, too. Bruno tries to say there's been a mistake, but Ale insists that if Bruno doesn't pay up, Ale is going to the police and it's to the carcel for Bruno. Bruno claims he doesn't have any cash on hand but thinks fast and instead offers Ale the promissory note and deed (escrituras) for Hacienda Mendoza that DIM stole from his own family to give to Bruno as payment. I've been typing for four hours now trying to finish this recap, and I can't quite remember anymore, but I suspect Ale must have been muy impactado at this discovery.

Beach of Aqua Azul and MY LAST SCENE! Monse and José-Luis share some kisses. In what is increasingly looking like yet another tactic to avoid having to speak to Lauro about the relationship though it may possibly just be a genuine romantic impulse, J-L suggest instead that he and Monse just run away together. He's got some friends in Veracruz and they could get a little shack and shack up. She thinks it would be dangerous since her father still has connections in the Navy and could hunt them down, but he says it wouldn't matter since by the time they were discovered they'd already be married anyway. What do you say? he asks. She says SI! They seem really happy making preparations. Unfortunately, the anvil is perched over their heads. DIM-itrio has spotted them. I suspect it's now on to Graciela with the news in Capitulo 4, but we'll have to wait until Friday to find out.

THANKS TO ALL! I hope it was as good for you as it was for me. Looking forward to reading your comments. Forgive my typos and please don't hesitate to let me know if I made any mistakes.

This recap is fabulous, simply fabulous! Loved all the detail and from this recap, it sure doesn't seem like you are a "virgin recapper"! Are you sure you aren't like NovelaMaven and writing pot boilers on the side?

Ay, yi, yi, I fear Jose Luis is a chicken. Why is he so afraid to face the Admiral? He ought to man up, really!

I too think Tia Lottie is the smartest one in this TN so far, along with Ale. He is pretty and smart as well ; )

I really like the actress playing Nadia, Alejandra Garcia, last seen on UFCS as Lupita. And her hubby Pedro is Sergio Sendel, the wrecker of every cell phone in sight! He seems like a real A$$hat here.

Bruno does act like a Mafioso that's for sure. He has his hands in a lot of bad bidness and Juvie right along with him. I forgot to see if Juvie was still wearing that ring. Juvie is into the blackmail I see. Gracie looked a mite disgusted.

Dimi is gonna be in so much trouble! Can you imagine what Gracie is gonna do when she finds out what Dimi has done? I want her to slap him upside the head, but she seems to only reserve that for poor Montse.

Poor Montse has her head in the clouds. I wish she'd come back to Earth and take a good long look at Ale and see what a fine, fine, man he is. Jose Luis who????

Thanks again Julia, you rock!

Very nicely done Julia!

My fav line : "in some Jane-Austenesque chisme about how it's a truth universally acknowledge that a recently recognized illegitimate heir to a hacienda and fortune must be in want of a wife and couldn't this be a good thing for Monserrat"

I was LOL-ing in the office, while my collegaues giving me strange looks.. must remember not to read the the recaps there but just couldn't help it :)

IMHO J-L is a weakling, Monse should drop him like a hot potato and go for Alej. pronto!

By the way, is it just me, or this whole idea of must get permission from Papi for a relationship, and too afraid to tell him, eloping to be together and scared of telling a truth, because Papi might send brutes after them is way no XXI. century? Come on ppl what planet you live on?
the whole scenario looks like it really has been copied from a JA book - rolling eyes -

Julia,
Awesome job! Well done! Two of my favorite lines were "...not J-L at all but actually Bachelor # 2--Guzmancito!" & "Jane-Austenesque chisme".

I knew Nadia was hiding something about her marriage. Seems like her husband Pedro is living in another century, where he expects his wife to "serve" him.

I am liking that Ale is not letting Bruno pull a fast one on him. It will be interesting to see if he accepts the escrituras, and if he does, what will he do with them?

Madelaine - Juvie is still wearing the ring. He had it on in the car with Gracie.

irisz79 - ITA, J-L is weak, un cobarde. The whole thing about asking papi for permission is old school, but it is also a tradition of sorts. It is the proper thing to do because it shows that you respect not only the 'senorita', but her family as well. It's like a 'courting custom.' At least that is how I understand it.

Of course, I hope Monse wakes up and smells the damn sweetness that Ale is (not to be confused with DamSweetness).

Back to sleep...Hasta luego!

Well, you are off to a great start, Julia! Loved, "A nervous but excited Monserrat in a fetching little midriff-baring number that should be the envy of step squads across America" that was my assessment of her garb. I can see more adroit descriptions, can't wait to read the whole thing after work!

Felicidades, Julia on your maiden voyage; that was excellent work with lots of good lines.

DIM-itrio... I think you've dubbed him perfectly. He is obviously up to his unibrow in gambling debt and there will be an anvil waiting for him for trying to lose the family home. At least we now suspect that quitting the Naval academy (or washing out) is what put him out of favor with his padre.

I agree that Jose Luis is a coward. However, asking Lauro's permission is probably not so out there because of his status as a retired admiral. He would have influence. If he doesn't like the idea he could get J-L transferred far away, but if he likes him he could influence a promotion. At this stage this could go either way and it sounds like J-L is reluctant to roll the dice and come up snake eyes.

Alejandro definitely has Bruno's number and he could make very short work of him.

I thought Juventino was trying to put the moves on Graciela; he may want to. I could see her gelding him in one stroke.

Oh my! "envy of step squads across America." Score 1!

Ridiculous outfit and did not make our lead actress look any younger or more innocent.

"lurking in his pupil" was delightful as was "Jan Austenesque chisme". Wonderful juxtaposition.

"nefariously gained jewelry". Sure seems to be a lot of that in this one.

Looking forward to watching this later, but couldn't wait to get to your recap, Julia. Very well done. And trust me, you will NOT be typing for 4 hours every time. The first few recaps seem to take forever, but once you're in the groove, it will go faster.

Excellent debut. Readable, informative and witty. Thanks.

Hi again, everyone!

Thanks for all your thoughtful, kind, and funny comments on my first recap! Of course, I woke up at 6 AM to see if there were any, and was thrilled that there were. You all are generous and wonderful readers. Thanks, too, to JudyB for reassurances that the recapping process will get faster.

Thursday is my busiest teaching day, so I won't have time to comment on all the comments until this evening, but just wanted to say I realized later I forgot to elaborate more on two other interesting scenes:
1. Yes, the Pedro/Nadia "Where's my dinner, and you've got to serve me" thing was weird. Thanks to Aunty Ann for pointing this out.

2. Also, I forgot to include the scene in the Almonte Kitchen where Juventino gets all mad about not getting respect and smashes a piece of fruit--was it an orange? Mango? I couldn't see!

Julia, your hours of labor on this yielded a stellar recap. It's as though you have been recapping for years. As usual, Judy and I are on the same wavelength but I heartily endorse and will echo: "fetching little midriff-baring number that should be the envy of step squads across America", "friendly and gentile conversation about sordid events like the death of El Señor Almonte", "burgeoning love triangle" and "nefariously (one of my all time favorite words) gained jewelry" were amazing.

Madelaine, irisz, AuntyAnn and UA, ITA that JL is indeed acting very cowardly. Be a man and ask for her hand (if you really think you must in this day and age)...

Madelaine, I also like Tia Lottie - a great character.

I know I'm droning on but I Luis Gatica is on fire here. His portrayal of Bruno is riveting. Thought he would have a hard time convincing me in anything other than a good guy role, but he dominates his scenes whether bullying or fawning. I am also glad Ale effectively and quickly put an end to his reign of financial terror.

Wondering how much worse Graciela's wardrobe can be? Ticky tacky and just inexplicable. Those cream colored pants with the black lace were a hideous fashion don't.

Sergio arrived and didn't disappoint. The cold, hard steeley look is back and hopefully some good old fashioned phone throwing will be in the mix shortly.

Liking this story and the recaps and comments even more! Sorry there will be no airing tonight.

Julia, again, thank you! This was great.

Diana

Julia, I think the victim of the fist smash was a yellow pepper!

Diana

Diana, how come ther will be no episode today? I was so looking forward to it. :(

irisz: The Latin Grammys are on so we are going to have to wait until Friday!:(

I believe they start at 7 and are pre-empting all the TNs regaularly scheduled.

Diana

Yes, they do. At least I don't have to worry about catching up to them tomorrow after being out tonight.

Julia, what a great recap. You did great! Jose Luis seems like a whimp to me. Not very appealing. Can't wait for Friday! So far so good.

Thanks Diana, I was not aware of it! I do not know the program schedule for US broadcast.

Julia, you hit it out of the park, girl! Brava! And as JudyB said, don't worry about the time it takes -- it gets a lot easier as you go on. My first recap took 4 hours, too!

Diana, ITA about Gatica -- he had me from "a sus ordenes." A totally believable baddie.

Couldn't watch last night, but I'll catch up with the DVR this evening. Can't wait to see my steely Sergio again.

Juilia, this recap was simply amazing. I was all settled in to be able to drool....I mean watch Rulli and company and then the phone rang. Missed most of the episode, but your wonderful detail has me all up to date. I can literally see the scenes unfolding in my head. Brilliant!

Oops again, google let me down. Last post was mine.

Daisynjay

Wow! What a spectacular debut, Julia!

How astute to spot the Austenesque (and really, it's not just in the aunts but in the whole story).

I love your style and humor and am delighted we'll be treated to them fortnightly.

P.S. In the scene with Graciela and Juventino in her car, he reveals a very dark secret:

The two of them conspired to speed up Benjamín's death. She was counting on inheriting his money and had promised Juventino a big pay-off. She can't pay off Juventino, she says, because that son ended up with everything. That's not Juventino's problem; and Graciela is obviously a very rich woman...

So we can add to Graciela's resume (along with unfaithful wife and cruel mother) murderer!

P.P.S. Did anyone notice that Beatriz's Doña Rufi has landed on her feet and is now working in Aguazul as Alejo's housekeeper?

(I think Montse and José Luis SHOULD run away to Veracruz, maybe to Our Lady of the Sea. JL could find a job in the shipyard and the rest of us could hang out with DamFab and the gang.)

…And isn't Pedro primed to bring us the crazy!

[We should have known by his choice of optical wear.]

I'm already getting tired of José Luis, sick of his skulking around and hiding behind trees. Shape up or ship out, buster!

ok ok. I'm starting to get sucked in...

I can't take J-Lu seriously. He just looks too much like Mr. Bean.

NovelaMaven:

I loved your shape up or ship out quip for Jose Luis ; ) And the info on Gracie and Juvie.

I think we may have another SHUTUP for another character, namely Maria. Will she become another stalker? Ale has told her how many times, he isn't that into her?

AuntyAnn:

Thanks so much about the ring. Still no one notices he is wearing it? Hmmmm.....

Wouldn't the Navy get after Jose Luis if he deserts? A military deserter from any US branch could be caught decades later and sentenced to hard time at Leavenworth. Granted, there is no war going on, but as far as I know no military branch in any country is like having a civilian job. Mad Men fans are wondering if the series will end with Don Draper being found out by the military and sent up for desertion and for impersonating an officer.

Sorry, don't have time yet to read recaps.

Gotta say ... SR is F.I.N.E. - never was there doubt about that. He's the only one I was paying attention to last night.

Amazing recap Julia! Would never have known it was your first if you did not mention it.

I still have not noticed that darn ring! I guess I am as oblivious as these characters. As sleazy and lazy as he is I am really liking Juventino's character. I also like how Bruno can go from bully with DIM to playing Mr.Nice guy with Alejandro. Pedro is intriguing, even with his cold manner and outdated ideas. So far I am liking all the villians for once....minus S.R...I am falling fast :)

Urban:

If a military person deserts they don't go after them anymore. They used to do that, but stopped doing it in the seventies I think. The only way deserters are caught now is usually during traffic stops, turning themselves in, committing a crime, etc. They don't go to Leavenworth anymore either. They usually go to the local Navy Brig (Navy Jail) they have one on most big Naval Bases, and they usually only get a max of sixty days. I knew a guy that deserted and that's all the time he got. The punishment is more severe if they desert in a time of war. Depending on the circumstances it is still usually only sixty days, provided they didn't commit a crime against the military and then deserted. Then the punishment is harsher and may end up in a trip to Leavenworth.

Amazing debut, Julia! Yes, at first it takes a long time to recap an episode, but you will amaze yourself soon with how much you cut down that time.

Mads- I am also happy to see Alejandra Garcia playing Nadia. Familia was her first tn acting gig when she was 19, and now she's 22 and playing Sergio Sendel's wife! Talk about jumping into the big leagues. He looks like a tyrant. I won't be surprised if we see him slapping her around. Yep, those glasses are definitely channeling CRAZY.

Loved Alejandro outsmarting the bad guys and laying into Bruno. Bruno was cracking me up with his butt-kissing, and then switching to menacing mafioso with Dim.

JL was being wimpy. I get why he would be that way with a retired commander, considering his profession and his position. But that means he should have had enough sense to not start dating the man's daughter in the first place.

Thank you so much,Julia, for this snappy recap. It was a great job for your maiden voyage. I enjoyed your observations, and it was a very fun read.

Juvie is certainly oily with that constant evil smile . It is hard to believe that this is the same hombre so many of us adored as Cap'n Rick's pirate sidekick in Pasion. He is a good actor who can play good guys and bad.

NM..I loved Sergio's glasses. They give him such an evil owl look. I am salivating to see him in action. In Amor Real, Ingrid Marz played the part of this character's young and innocent wife. I have noticed that all the character names have been changed, but the storyline is very similar to AR. In AR, the bad guy was a moneylender who the galan discovered had been cheating his father. Bruno is a slithering snake of a villain. he and Juvie make quite a pair. In AR, the mother has no connection to the ranch guy (Juvie here). However, the brother is deep in debt and a lazy scoundrel. same scenario about the family's farm falling on hard times and their economic down slide.

Montsey's bare midriff outfit made me think of Britney Spear's naughty schoolgirl uniform (HA) in her first video...I think it was "Hit Me Baby One More Time.,

Update on my sweet Lily....although she was very excited about preschool, she would not stay yesterday or today., She is a very tiny girl and only three and the preschool is part of a local high school's child development curriculum, so there are a lot of people in a small room..a teacher, teens, 14 little ones. I think she feels a little overwhelmed. Maybe her mommy will let her wait a little while before trying preschool again. We shall see.

Julia R - Great first recap, and well done! Written like an experienced pro. Thank you.
There were so many clever lines, that it would be hard to list all of them as my favs. :-)

I read that this is a remake of the Bodas de Odio, which I never saw, but loved Amor Real. So far, this does not make me think of AR at all. Which is a good thing. The modernization of it really helps. But I am starting to see the parallels as it all is coming back to me ...

J-L has to be hesitant to ask for Montse's hand because this is the proverbial plot-propeller. Also there is a class difference.

Ay, poor Nadia. I wonder how she married that husband of hers. She didn't seem to floating on the pink cloud of honeymoon happiness, when she talked with Montse at that waterfront. Now we see why. Bless her heart...

Blue Lass - LOL ("I can't take J-Lu seriously. He just looks too much like Mr. Bean.") J-Lu sure is no Adolfo Solís, either. ~sighs~

Susanlynn - your DGD (dear grand-daughter) sounds so sweet and precious, and yes, maybe a bit overwhelmed by her pre-school. The world is so big when one is so little. I now have a DGD, she will be petite like her mama, and I look forward to watching her grow up.

Julia R: you write like a vet. Good job. Going to enjoy your recaps very much.

Fav quotes: “Carlotta then proves she does indeed have the best brain so far in the capitulo by being the only person so far to comment that Alejandro is, well, one of the most handsome men in all of Novella-land!”

This one had me laughing out loud: “Carlotta and Graciela in some Jane-Austenesque chisme about how it's a truth universally acknowledge that a recently recognized illegitimate heir to a hacienda and fortune must be in want of a wife and couldn't this be a good thing for Monserrat?” This one, too: “Me wondereth why Tia Carlotta is being so generous and not hoping for Ale for herself, but she seems to be a good character who knows her place in telenovela hierarchy, and so gives up her I LIKED HIM FIRST rights.”

“I've been typing for four hours now trying to finish this recap, and I can't quite remember anymore, but I suspect Ale must have been muy impactado at this discovery.”

I take it Alejandro changed his name when he found out he was Benjamin’s son?

If Montserrat is supposed to be 19, AB is doing a good job of showing her slight immaturity. Like when she tells her dad she doesn’t care that she was rude and flounces out.

I also hope Carlotta finds love.

And Ale is stuck-up?! Did I miss something?

J-L is very wishy-washy.

Nanette

I loved this line from Graciela..She tells Dim that "he spends too much and does too little." ....Right on, right on. Pot meet kettle , isn't it ironic that this harpy's name is Graciela ?

I miss Dam. Dim does not do anything for me. Perhaps our fun with all the Damwords will have to be replaced by Dimwords. Que lastima.

hi, Doris. I am so glad that you will be joining us for this show. I've missed you. Miss Lily is napping now. We shall see what her mommy says.

Julia, congratulations on a Dam Fab recap! It's excellent; you have a great "voice" and unique style. I'm so glad you decided to join this recapping team.

You have so many great lines, but my biggest laugh came from: "...she seems to be a good character who knows her place in telenovela hierarchy, and so gives up her I LIKED HIM FIRST rights". Just brilliant.

Thanks Julia!

Blue: cracked me up: “I can't take J-Lu seriously. He just looks too much like Mr. Bean.”

That not noticing the ring bothers me. I’m obessessed.

Vivi: “JL was being wimpy. I get why he would be that way with a retired commander, considering his profession and his position. But that means he should have had enough sense to not start dating the man's daughter in the first place.”—good point.

Nanette, nice to "see" you again! And Emarie, Doris, and Susanlynn -- it's been a while, hasn't it? I think there are going to be some wild nights on the patio...

I loved this phrase describing Graciela's reaction to Ale's comments about her affair with Old Ben..."nearly embarrassed." So perfect a description for G. who seems to be a gal who is not easily embarrassed. She could be on a Real Housewives of Blue Water series, verdad ?

Hi, Blue Lass, great to be on this new voyage with you. I am very interested to see how close this novela set in present day matches up with my beloved Amor Real. Some aspects of this story suit a historical novela.

Hi, Julia:
Wonderful first recap, simply great! congratulations.

All: Sorry to have been absent for a few days. I have been really under the weather. Hope to join in more fun and convo when I feel a little better.

Elna June

EJ: feel better soon.

Blue: glad to move to a, from all I hear, good novela. I was one of PEAM's few fans--until it imploded.

Dear (((Elna June))).... so sorry to hear that you have not been feeling well. I am sending out good vibrations to you. Feel better soon.

EJ, I hope you are feeling better soon. Is it as wet and dreary up in your neck of the woods as it is in mine? Makes me cranky.

EJ:

So sorry you are feeling under the weather. Rest, relax and sending you healing vibes ala "Eusebia" ; )

Carlota- that woman will drive me bonkers! Does she have an inside voice and does she have to say EVERYTHING that pops into her head? And Dimdim is a jerk, you don't steal from your family!

PS:Is Carlota la profesora Jimena from Carrusel?

Sylvia...not wet here but it is damp, chilly, and overcast which makes me a little cranky, too. I like the sunshine even if it is cold. Gray days make me feel...gray. However, the recaps of Robo, CI, and PEAM (Goodbye,,,finally) are cheering me up. A big thank you to all our wonderful, dedicated, hardworking recappers for giving us some sunshine even on cloudy days.

Amen to that sister! Snarking and laughing about our crazy telenovela characters always puts a smile on my face. And I'm happy to reconnect with some friends on this board.

EJ...So sorry you are under the weather. Never a good place to be. Healing thoughts, loving prayers and tranquil calm coming your way...Right Now!!!!!

Sylvia..Have you noticed that Ale's BFF is your old friend Sargent Frank from Duelo de Pasiones and Fernando from PEAM ? He was also the mariachi singer in Teresa.

P.s. one reason I have trouble proving that I am not a robot is that Ipad keeps trying to make words from the random letters. it just changed ,sarboar" to "starboard." I am getting paranoid about this constant impulse to correct. You are not the boss of me, Ipad. ...And thanks for not changing that to" I peed. "

sorry for that double post. I kept getting the notice that my comment was not accepted.

SusanLynn:

No worries, I took care of it. If you do make a double comment again, all you have to do is click on the little trash can next to the time/date stamp on the bottom of your comment and you can delete the extra comment yourself : )

Nanette:

You didn't miss anything about Ale. Monse just feels he is stuck up, cause she is looking for a way to diss him. It all had to do with him appearing at the time Jose Luis was wishing to speak to Monse's Papa, her saying he wasn't in and then her Papa's voice loud and clear. It sure didn't look like she thought he was stuck up at the time she "accidently" hugged him down on the beach ; )

Stupid Smartphones and IPads! That's why I hate writing things on them. At least Susanlynn's IPad knows the nautical terms.

I certainly am liking all the familiar faces in this one. NM, I was happy to see Dona Rufi show up here, thanks for pointing her out. That actress seems to have herself comfortably typecast.

Susanlynn, I have been a big fan of Alejandro Avila ever since Duelo. He was superb in PEAM.

thanks, Mads. Are you enjoying this new ride even though we are all missing the whole dam cast of LT ?

Julia wonderful first recap. As others have noted, you are already a pro.

EJ so sorry to hear you aren't feeling well and praying for your fast recovery.

Nanette - ITA w/Mads on Monserrat calling Ale stuck up. You missed nothing and she's mad he keeps showing up.

Vivi - your summation of JL is spot on. I'm w/Mads on the JL who 'cause SR is one of my telenovios;)

SusanLynn:

Yes, I am sooo enjoying this one. My fav SR is in this one, I've missed him too since AV finished. I really miss my telenovio Favorito EY. I hope he does another TN ; )

EJ, sending good wishes that you feel better quickly!

Karen, I like SR more with each successive TN - he is dreamy here (love the longer hair).

Madelaine, I read that EY is focusing right now on trying to procure movies here in the US. I don't know if it's true or not, but I hope he returns to TNs quickly. He is my absolute favorite.

Diana

to procure movie roles (is what I meant). Ack. Long day.

Diana

Hey Diana:

I did see him on an episode of "NCIS Los Angeles" as a Venezuelan President, like two years ago. His English was really good. It left it hanging if he was coming back, so far he hasn't. I know he does these TNs between work in the U.S. I just hope he does another TN in between again.

Julia R - Congrats on your premiere recap! My favorites lines are the step squad and nefarious jewelry. I appreciate all the detail cause I'm still sorting out what's what.

Elna June - Hope you feel better soon.

Madelaine and Diana - I'm missing EY too. Want to see him in something new, but it would be great if they repeated one of his old ones too.

Mads and Diana...I have not seen Big Ed on any American shows lately, but I remember seeing him in some shows before I discovered tns and seeing him in DA. He was in a Dr. Quinn TV movie years ago. it was a dream seeing him and Joe Lando (my honey Sully) in the same show. Hub watches NCIS, but I don't think he would recognize EY as my telenovio if he had seen him. Please let me know if you hear of any new projects for EY or FC.

Well done Julia R and welcome. This recap is excellent. It's amusing as well as informative and well-crafted. Good job.

Wow, Pedro hasn't wasted any time in staking out a position on the sanity bell curve. Good luck with that, Nadia.

I hope that Alejandro checks with don Lauro before accepting those papers from Bruno, but does anyone think that he will? Me neither.

I'm loving all the characters, but so far Carlotta, Graciela, Pedro, and Bruno are my faves.

Then there's María... sigh. But will someone please get that girl a headband?

Carlos

Hi again, everyone! It was such a delight to read everyone's comments-can't thank you enough and so happy you enjoyed the recap.

Thanks to NovelaMaven, too, for adding the important information about what was happening with Graciela and Juventino in the car. I thought I heard him say something about her paying him the money she promised him, but it was all so fast and I was trying to write down as the scene went on, and I find Juventino's accent really hard to understand anyway. I had an inkling I might have missed something there.

Also, Nanette, thanks for asking about the scene where Monserrat says that she doesn't like Alejandro because he seems stuck-up. The word I thought she used was sangrón which I'd never heard before and had to look up on Word Reference and that's what it gave me. Maybe it's not the best translation for Mexico or maybe she said something else that I didn't catch. Anybody know more or want to add more?

Thanks again to all for hilarious and insightful comments!

Mads: I didn’t think Ale acted stuck-up. I figured Mons was mad at him for being the cause of the meeting between her dad and J-L being postponed, but thought I might have overlooked it. The last few days has been a marathon of PEAM, La Reina del Sur and Robo—let alone weekly prime time shows. By the time this one comes on, I’m exhausted. I’ll be watching LRdS in PEAM’s time slot now (a day late, of course).

Julia R: Everybody is on board with your translating sangron to stuck-up. I’m sure that’s what it was and that the explanation for her saying it is that she’s a bit peeved with him.

Congratulations, Julia! You wrote it up like a pro!

--JL seems like such a wimp

--Alejandro is not going to disappoint (I'm ready to take him home!)

--Sergio Sendel. I like his eyes.

Urban, you had me DYING laughing with the "gelding" comment. That was a really, REALLY good "visual". I can picture it now. :))

Fatima

Great recap and much appreciated. I would miss too much without it. WHO DRESSES GRACIELA? Really astonishing outfits; are they accidental or on purpose? Ale is in for a lot of trouble as everyone will be trying to take his money away from him - except Monserrat I think.

Good start to the TN - but not as dramatic as LT. I am also glad that PEAM is over - surprised that FC would go for a part like that. He's much better in the more intense commanding roles.

Nanette:

If you want to read or comment on LRDS go to the side bar, see Telemundo recaps and click on it. This is my first time watching it , although I read the book like two years ago, and forgotten some of the book. We are having discussions about it on there.

Carlos...good one ...,staking out a position on the sanity bell curve." I believe that Sergio is just the guy to ruin the curve. the black rimed glasses are genius. just one look and you know that this guy is going to be....unique...nteresting....perhaps demented....definitely not the good guy.

Word I.D..."yestpub"....a newly coined term for the bar you went to yesterday. I am having trouble with posting this because Ipad changed it first to "yeast pub, ...que? ..and then to yesterday pub,

Susanlynn, you know you can turn off autocorrect, right? Although it does make life amusing. ;}

I don't care how demented Sergio is as long as he's occasionally shirtless.

Just want a feel for whether I should post a weekend topic today or hold it until next weekend, which is Thanksgiving weekend. Normally I don't post one on the weekend of a finale, but I don't recall our traffic from last Thanksgiving weekend.

Any thoughts on this?

Mads: I've actually been reading the comments on the LRDS page and think I may have commented a time or two. I'm behind on eps now, which is why I haven't visited the site lately. Hope to catch up this weekend and, now that PEAM is gone, keep caught up. Then I'll start commenting again.

Wanted to read the book, but my library doesn't have it.

Nanette, can you request your library to order the book? Some libraries will do that.

Congratulations to Julia R,

I trust that for your first time,
you received a deliciously memorable stroking experience to make it all worthwhile. Fabulous job!

Just chiming in briefly to say that I will not be commenting - no time right now. Have not watched anything since AV, but I do like most of the actors in this one, so will be watching when I can. I record it and can watch it here and there when I have some free time.
Love Sergio Sendel from DA.

As a TN watcher, I date back only to 2005. I began with La Mujer en el Espejo and La Madrastra. In no way am I an expert on all the actors and their previous performances as are most of you. It is a great hobby, and I always love reading your hilarious and informative comments. I recognize all of your names and can appreciate all of your unique contributions and translations of the Spanish. I hope you don't mind if I am, for now, a Leech and a Lush sipping Baileys way, way out on the back Patio.

Julia, although I'm late, just wanted to say what a great recap you gave us. Looking forward to more from you.

Sylvia: I thought about it, but I've been interlibrary loaning Frances Marion books for the past few months and it's $5.00 a pop, so not sure if I want to do that for this book. I was thinking of checking Amazon to see if I could buy a really cheap used copy, then trade it at the used bookstore--if I don't decide to keep it.

A pleasent read again,Julia..And i remember Carlota from Corazon Apasionado though i didnt really like that novela.
Juventino is EVIL,you will see soon how much.
Nadia and Pedro could do good buisness together,Nadia buys an Iphone,Pedro breaks it and collects assurance. No wonder Apple is running out of stock.

Just joining the party here but wanted to thank you for a wonderfully fun re-cap Julia! Great job-- I can't believe it's your first!
Many thanks!
